The effects of river flow diversion on biodiversity were assessed using Coleoptera as an indicator group in three habitats of the Kihansi Gorge (Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania), before and after commissioning of a hydropower plant. Data collected using sweep netting and pitfall traps showed that the effect of diversion of the river flow was site-specific, affecting particularly the spray habitat. Rarefaction analysis of both sweep netting and pitfall samples indicated that the expected richness of Coleoptera declined significantly in all habitats after commissioning of the power plant. Sweep netting and pitfall samples showed that the highest Shannon–Wiener diversity index value before the diversion of the river flow was in the spray zone, but the index value decreased after diversion. Changes in the other two habitats were less prominent. Analysis of variance using diversity index values from five pitfall samples in each habitat type before and after commissioning indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the diversity index between the two sampling periods or among the three habitat types. Renkonen's similarity index between habitats showed that pitfall samples had higher similarity (87%) than did samples from sweep netting (69%). It is suggested that for mitigation purposes, artificial spray systems, which have been installed in other wetlands of the Kihansi Gorge, also be installed to cover the whole Lower Wetland in which this study was undertaken. In order to maintain overall biodiversity in the Kihansi Gorge, it is suggested that the ecosystem conservation approach be prioritised.  相似文献

Abstract

Totally, 26 xerohalophytic species belonging to the associations Cakilo-Xanthietum italici and Echinophoro-Elymetum farcti were registered at the Velika pla?a beach (Montenegro); they were distributed following the spatial succession common in this type of habitat. Three transects of different terrain morphology (positioned perpendicularly to the shoreline) were surveyed to establish if there were any differences in the floristic composition and species distribution due to the configuration discrepancy. Moreover, each transect was divided into zones: The first zone from 0 to 30 m inland, the second zone from 30 m to 60 m inland, and the third zone from 60 m to the end of beach (75–115 m, depending on transect length). The floristic composition was relatively uniform in the different transects. However, the number of individuals per species differed significantly among these transects. An analysis of the qualitative composition of transects/zones showed high differences between zones within transects I and II, whereas species composition of zones within transect III was mostly similar. When analyzing the quantitative composition of species, a positive correlation between the distance from the shoreline and the number of individuals per species in transects I and II was registered for most analyzed species (Spearman correlation, p < 0.001). This indicates that terrain configuration affected the ability of present species to become established and propagate.  相似文献

Monitoring abundance of threatened species is important for conservation planning. Lilian’s Lovebird Agapornis lilianae is a near-threatened small parrot found in mopane Colophospermum mopane woodland. Its population has not been investigated in any part of its range. We investigated the abundance and density of the Lilian’s Lovebird in Liwonde National Park, Malawi. Both distance sampling (line and point transects) methods and total counts (waterhole and flyway counts) were applied. The point count method gave very low numbers and was discontinued after the first year. Line transects conducted during the wet season had the highest density estimates of 17 ± 4.8 lovebirds km?2 of mopane woodland. However, number of observations per transect in each year were low. Waterhole counts had the lowest density estimates (10 ± 3.5 lovebirds km?2). Flyway counts gave an intermediate estimate (13 ± 3.0 lovebirds km?2). The total population of Lilian’s Lovebirds in Liwonde National Park is therefore estimated to be about 4 000 individuals. The use of line transect counts at the end of the rainy season is recommended for continued monitoring of Lilian’s Lovebirds abundance in Liwonde National Park.  相似文献

采用样方法以及用基径结构代替年龄结构的方法,对位于南岭大东山不同海拔的3个长柄双花木(Disanthus cercidifolius var.longipes Chang)样带(包括小洞、大洞和鸡子场样带,海拔分别为1 010、1 170和1 260 m)进行了调查,并编制了种群静态生命表和生存曲线,对其群落物种组成、种群年龄结构和生殖力现状进行了分析。结果显示:3个样带群落乔木层优势种数量及种类组成差异明显,共包含26个种类,但共有种仅3种,除长柄双花木外还有多花杜鹃(Rhododendron cavaleriei Lévl.)和两广杨桐(Adinandra glischroloma Hand.-Mazz.)2种;小洞样带长柄双花木种群的重要值(46.116%)明显高于另2个样带。根据基径可将长柄双花木种群分为68个龄级,3个样带的种群年龄结构基本一致,但小洞样带个体数量更多且基径31.0 mm以下的幼体所占比例最高;总体上长柄双花木种群中5 a以下的幼苗数量偏少,其他龄级的个体数量呈现随株龄增大波动但整体下降的趋势。种群的个体死亡率在5~10 a和10~15 a龄级较高(分别为20.30%和20.50%),并随年龄增长总体呈逐渐下降的趋势;且不同龄级个体生命期望值为4.49~0.50,总体偏低。种群生存曲线为Ⅰ型,种群净增殖率、内禀增长率、周限增长率和世代平均周期分别为0.504、-0.018、0.982和38.351 a,显示该种群在当前状态下自我更新不良,属缓慢的负增长型种群。根据研究结果,对该区域长柄双花木种群提出了相应的保护对策和建议。  相似文献

Abstract Resolving whether area per se or habitat heterogeneity has the greater influence in controlling species richness remains a controversial yet important question. Here we show that avian species richness of same-sized transects (1 ha) is independent of the remnant area (of buloke woodland) within which a transect is positioned. We also show that avi-faunal similarity of pairs of transects randomly placed within the largest remnants (≥ 48 ha) is not consistently related to either proximity (i. e. being within the same remnant) nor to physiognomic characteristics of the transects. We believe that much of the controversy over area/habitat heterogeneity effects is probably related to scalar issues and propose a protocol by which some resolution of the question might be reached. The protocol involves ‘zoom’ sampling in which successively larger transect sizes are used, and measures of faunal richness and habitat heterogeneity are made at these different grains of resolution. One of our intentions is to stimulate discussion on how heterogeneity might be measured when grains increase from typical transect sizes (ca 1 ha) up to much larger grains (ca 128 ha).  相似文献

ABSTRACT Although investigators have evaluated the efficacy of survey methods for assessing densities of breeding birds, few comparisons have been made of survey methods for wintering birds, especially in grasslands. In winter, social behavior and spatial distributions often differ from those in the breeding season. We evaluated the degree of correspondence between density estimates based on different survey methods. Surveys were conducted during two winters (2001–2002 and 2002–2003) on 16 grassland sites in southwestern Oklahoma. Line‐transect (using a detection function to account for birds present but not detected) and area‐search (where density was based on the total count within a given area) methods were employed. Observations on line transects were also analyzed as strip transects, where density was based on total count within a given strip width and no detection function was used. Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis), LeConte's Sparrows (Ammodramus leconteii), Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia), Smith's Longspurs (Calcarius pictus), Chestnut‐collared Longspurs (C. ornatus), and Eastern Meadowlarks (Sturnella magna) were sufficiently abundant to allow comparison. Area‐search density estimates tended to be higher than line‐transect estimates for Savannah Sparrows, Song Sparrows, and Eastern Meadowlarks, suggesting that some individuals initially located close to the transect line were not detected on line transects. The area‐search and line‐transect methods gave similar density estimates for Chestnut‐collared and Smith's longspurs. Area‐search estimates of Eastern Meadowlarks were significantly higher in the second year of the study only. For this species, area‐search estimates did not differ from those of strip transects covering an equal area, so the reason for the differing meadowlark estimates is not clear. Higher density estimates using the area‐search method likely resulted from: (1) birds that might escape detection by hiding were more likely detected (flushed) during area searches because of the repeated passes through the area, and (2) birds close to the line in line transects escape detection by hiding, biasing those estimates low. We also evaluated the correspondence of density rankings for the six species as determined by the different survey methods and for the same species across survey sites. Correlations among the six species of the area‐search results with those of line transects and strip transects generally were high, increasing in 2002–2003 when densities of birds were greater. All three methods provided similar density rankings among species. Density rankings within species across sites for the four non‐longspur species generally were concordant for the three methods, suggesting that any of them will adequately reflect among‐site differences, especially when densities vary greatly across sites. Further research is needed to determine the extent to which grassland birds are missed on line transects. We suggest that workers using line transects to study these species give careful consideration and make additional efforts to satisfy the distance‐sampling assumption that all birds on or near the line are detected. If density is measured as a total count in a fixed area, we recommend that observers pass within <10 m of all points in the area.  相似文献

Setting up effective survey strategies for biodiversity monitoring in agro-ecosystems is a major task in order to detect adverse effects on biodiversity before negative changes will manifest. Here, we studied the relative costs required for the monitoring of butterflies and selected diurnal moths (Papilionoidea et Hesperioidea; Zygaenoidea: Zygaenidae) in farmland. Analysing data from a well-established Lepidoptera monitoring system in Switzerland, we assessed the influence of inspection periods, inspection frequency and transect length on counts of diurnal Lepidoptera. Furthermore, we estimated the number of transects in relation to sampling effort necessary to detect changes of a given effect size for recorded species number (and abundance). Reducing the counting frequency from seven to four inspections per season still yielded 80–90 % of the species, as long as peak abundances in summer months were included. The variation in observed species number was mostly independent of inspection frequency, but strongly increased when transect length was reduced to less than 1 km. Sedentary Lepidoptera species are especially valuable indicators as their occurrences are directly linked to local effects on biodiversity, and the proportion of recorded sedentary species was not substantially affected by reduced inspection frequency. Transects of 1–1.5 km length were generally the most cost-efficient to detect an effect on total species number of diurnal Lepidoptera in arable landscapes, given that travelling distances between transects were short. Studying effects on rare species or selected species groups would involve higher sampling intensity and costs. Surveying schemes with reduced inspection frequency and transect lengths can detect changes in species richness and total abundance of diurnal Lepidoptera cost-effectively. Facing expected changes in agricultural policy and management, the results and recommendations presented here will help to implement and improve cost-efficient Lepidoptera schemes to monitor changes in arable landscapes.  相似文献

Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale Weber(sensu lato); Asteraceae) have been introduced to NorthandSouth America with human migration from Europe. While potential sourcepopulations have both sexually and obligate asexually (agamospermous)reproducing lineages, apparently only the latter have successfully colonizedtheAmericas. The consequences of obligate agamospermy on dandelion populationgenetic diversity in North America remain little explored. Here we use fourdifferent synthetic DNA probes that reveal genetic markers at multiplevariable-number-tandem-repeat (VNTR) loci to examine patterns of geneticvariation among plants collected along three different central North Americantransects with plants (21 to 22 individuals per transect) separated by: 1) >2 m and < 60 m (short transect); 2) > 5km and < 30 km (medium transect); and 3) > 30km and < 340 km (long transect). The mean numberofVNTR markers revealed per plant was 59.3. Co-clonal individuals (proportion ofbands shared exceeding 90%) were found in each transect, with the indexof clonality (the percent of co-clonal individuals detected in a transect)ranging from 34.12% for the short transect to 18.65% for the longtransect. Co-clonal individuals were separated by up to 200 km.With redundant examples of co-clonal individuals removed, mean similarity(proportion of band sharing) of distinct genotypes within transects was 0.426,and no statistical differences in level of similarity between transects, norindication of genetic differentiation between transects, was detected (meanFst between transect levels with all individuals included =0.05). These results indicate: 1) that dandelion genetic diversity ofcolonizinglineages in central North America is moderately high and does not reflectextreme bottleneck effects shown by some colonizing species; and 2) thatdandelion seed dispersal can be very effective in maintaining similar levels ofgenetic diversity at the different scales of sampling in this study, withcertain clones maintaining numerous, widespread individuals. Evidence that VNTRmutation is detectable within dandelion clonal lineages is presented,demonstrating that clonal families with lines increasinglydifferentiated from one another will continually evolve, and that Muller'srachet is, in all likelihood, turning for asexual lines.  相似文献

As part of a larger study on the effects of juvenile fish predation on meiobenthic copepods, we collected meiofauna every two hours for 24 hours at three muddy sites along a transect through vegetated marsh, to unvegetated intertidal to unvegetated subtidal habitats. The vegetated marsh (Spartina alterniflora) site harbored significantly more copepods over the combined sampling period than the other two sites. Some species were distributed along the entire transect, but several species were much more abundant at one site than the others. For example, Microarthridion littorale was most abundant at the intertidal site, and Enhydrosoma propinquum was most abundant at the unvegetated sites. The most abundant subtidal species included Pseudobradya pulchella and Paronychocamptus wilsoni. Three species were most abundant in the vegetated marsh (Stenhelia (D.) bifidia, Nannopus palustris, and Diarthrodes aegidius). Maximum total copepod abundance occurred during the daytime low tide at all three sites. Of the four species more abundant in the light than at night, three were subtidal. Most of the time there were no detectable differences between high and low tide abundances, suggesting that there was little exchange of individuals between habitats as tidal levels changed. Without samples from additional transects or the ability to obtain samples for all possible combinations of light and tide levels, we could not detect significant interactions between these two environmental factors. Based upon the species composition of copepods in the gut contents of motile fish predators, the existence of distinct copepod species assemblages at sites along the transect may allow inferences about where fish had fed.Contribution No. 695 from the Bell W. Abstract Termites are major decomposers in tropical ecosystems. To characterize their assemblages in terms of taxonomical and functional composition, Jones and Eggleton (2000, Journal of Applied Ecology 37, 191–203) recently proposed a standardized sampling protocol based on belt transects of 100 m × 2 m. We evaluated the representativeness of samples obtained by this protocol, and its suitability to calculate diversity statistics, by replicating it in an area of naturally fragmented subtropical forest. We sampled six 100 m transects in separate small forest islets, and one transect extended to 500 m in a large islet, recording presence/absence data (occurrences) of termite species in successive quadrats of 5 m × 2 m. In the large islet, strips of 100 m within the 500 m transect produced extremely variable species richness figures. This variability was primarily due to heterogeneity in the spatial distribution of soil‐dwelling termites. Combining non‐contiguous quadrats allowed us to span a broader diversity of microhabitats for an equal effort, providing less variable results and faster species accumulation. Individual transects of 100 m in small forest islets yielded too few samples to allow reliable estimations of total species richness, although these transects when pooled constituted a useful data set for comparison with other sites. In the focal habitat, a single 100 m transect appeared therefore inadequate to allow a reliable characterization of the termite assemblage, even at the level of a single forest islet. To improve the rate of species accumulation and to obtain diversity statistics allowing intersite comparisons, we suggest the use of smaller, non‐contiguous quadrats, and that sampling be continued until stable diversity estimates are obtained. In the habitat studied, such an alternative protocol could be adequately combined with a standardized protocol for collecting ground‐dwelling ants.  相似文献

Many butterfly populations are monitored by counting the number of butterflies observed while walking transects during the butterfly’s flight season. Methods for estimating population abundance from these transect counts are appealing because they allow rare populations to be monitored without capture–recapture studies that could harm fragile individuals. An increasingly popular method for estimating abundance from transect counts relies on strong assumptions about the counting process and the processes that govern butterfly population dynamics. Here, we study the statistical performance of this method when underlying model assumptions are violated. We find that estimates of population size are robust to departures from underlying model assumptions, but that the uncertainty in these estimates (i.e., confidence intervals) is substantially underestimated. Alternative bootstrap and Bayesian methods provide better measures of the uncertainty in estimated population size, but are conditional upon knowledge of butterfly detectability. Because of these requirements, a mixed approach that combines data from small capture–recapture studies with transect counts strikes the best balance between accurate monitoring and minimal injury to individuals. Our study is motivated by monitoring studies for St. Francis satyr (Neonympha mitchelli francisci), a rare and relatively immobile butterfly occurring only in the sandhills region of south-central North Carolina, USA.  相似文献

Studying patterns of species invasions over time at multiple spatial scales may help us to elucidate important factors driving those patterns and how they change according to temporal or spatial resolution. Here we provide a large, long‐term, landscape‐scale study of the invasion of three Hieracium species using a dataset that encompasses vegetation change on 124 transects over 25 years across the lower eastern South Island of New Zealand. We investigated the relationships between key environmental and ecological factors and the invasion trajectories of H. lepidulum, H. pilosella and H. praealtum, at two spatial scales: (i) among‐transect colonization and (ii) within‐transect changes in frequency and per cent cover. Our results show that the colonization and spread of Hieracium species among and within transects reflect (i) the importance of initial environmental and biological conditions, (ii) that our sampling captured different periods of the invasion trajectories of each of the three species, and (iii) the effects of differences in life histories of the three species.  相似文献

Monitoring programs designed to assess changes in population size over time need to account for imperfect detection and provide estimates of precision around annual abundance estimates. Especially for species dependent on conservation management, robust monitoring is essential to evaluate the effectiveness of management. Many bird species of temperate grasslands depend on specific conservation management to maintain suitable breeding habitat. One such species is the Aquatic Warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola), which breeds in open fen mires in Central Europe. Aquatic Warbler populations have so far been assessed using a complete survey that aims to enumerate all singing males over a large area. Because this approach provides no estimate of precision and does not account for observation error, detecting moderate population changes is challenging. From 2011 to 2013 we trialled a new line transect sampling monitoring design in the Biebrza valley, Poland, to estimate abundance of singing male Aquatic Warblers. We surveyed Aquatic Warblers repeatedly along 50 randomly placed 1-km transects, and used binomial mixture models to estimate abundances per transect. The repeated line transect sampling required 150 observer days, and thus less effort than the traditional ‘full count’ approach (175 observer days). Aquatic Warbler abundance was highest at intermediate water levels, and detection probability varied between years and was influenced by vegetation height. A power analysis indicated that our line transect sampling design had a power of 68% to detect a 20% population change over 10 years, whereas raw count data had a 9% power to detect the same trend. Thus, by accounting for imperfect detection we increased the power to detect population changes. We recommend to adopt the repeated line transect sampling approach for monitoring Aquatic Warblers in Poland and in other important breeding areas to monitor changes in population size and the effects of habitat management.  相似文献

Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain diversity patterns of galling insects. However, there are contradictory evidences on the evolutionary and ecological factors responsible for the trends. Furthermore, questions such as arthropod seasonality, sampling sufficiency and sampling team experience have been almost ignored. This study records galling arthropod diversity while paying attention to these questions. Seasonal sampling of galling arthropods and host plants were conducted in a humid subtropical forest of southern Brazil. Four transects were sampled twice per season, with two persons searching the vegetation for galls during 1h30min. After 96h.persons of sampling, 130 gall morphotypes on 84 species of host plants were recorded. An analysis of the numbers of galls and gall morphotypes found per transect along time showed that sampling team experience influences galler richness results and the interpretation of galler seasonality patterns. Different species had distinct seasonal patterns. Galling arthropod richness was bound to plant richness. Our results suggest that sampling team experience is an important factor that must be explicitly considered, as well as seasonality patterns of different galling species, at least for tropical/subtropical areas. Although sampling sufficiency was not reached, fauna heterogeneity at small spatial scales seems substantial: despite the proximity of the sampled transects (500 m), they harboured significantly specific faunas. This work adds to the literature records suggesting that both plant richness and specific composition of the vegetation have a strong influence on galler richness at least for local scales.  相似文献

Abstract. This study includes 24 transects on slopes of the Velebit, Biokovo and Orjen mountains, the tallest coastal mountains along the Adriatic Sea, with a very high species richness according to European standards and having the largest regional concentrations of endemics. Within each transect the presence or absence of phytosociological alliances, according to the Zürich-Montpellier School, was interpreted from local studies. The alliance composition of the transects was compared with methods used in numerical syntaxonomy. Three types of vegetation complexes (N. Dinaric inland, transitional and S. Dinaric coastal) were derived from a numerical classification of the transects; they were defined on the basis of their characteristic alliances. The maritime impact affecting the mountains through the river canyons reduces the contrast in vegetation between inland and coastal slopes. The existence of a climatic macrogradient is indicated by seriation of the basic alliance/transect data matrix leading to a diagonal structure, by a gradual shift of the alliance composition within the same vegetational type, and by the distribution of the transects and alliances along the first axis of a Correspondence Analysis ordination. Transect scores on the second ordination axis are negatively correlated with transect vegetational diversity (number of alliances per transect); this axis may reflect a decrease in humidity and temperature range. This interpretation is supported by the result of a comparison of the total mountain vegetational diversity (Mann-Whitney test), which showed that Orjen is the most diverse mountain ridge. The expected correlation between plant community diversity and altitude of the transects is blurred, probably due to the impact of the cold Bora wind and subsequent compression of vegetational zones.  相似文献

Numerous check dams have been constructed in many countries, but there continues to be very limited scientific evidence of their effect on biotic community. Since amphibians are highly sensitive to moisture changes, amphibian assemblages were used as a monitoring parameter to evaluate the effects of check dams on biotic components in this study. Comparison of amphibian assemblages between check dam and non-check dam areas was conducted along ephemeral streams in a tropical deciduous forest of the Chulalongkorn University Forest and Research Station in Nan Province, Thailand from April 2009 to March 2010. Five transects, including the stream transect, and 5, 10, 25, and 50 m terrestrial transects, were used for amphibian surveys between the two areas. Physical factors related to moisture were also compared between these areas. It was found that hydroperiod in the check dam stream was significantly higher than that in the non-check dam stream. Soil moisture content at most terrestrial transects in the check dam area was significantly higher than that in the non-check dam area, while similarity in leaf litter moisture content was found in most transects. Simpson's index of diversity indicated that amphibian diversities in all transects were equally diverse between the two areas in both wet and dry seasons. Cluster analysis of similarity in species composition indicated that amphibian composition in the check dam stream was distinct from that in the non-check dam stream in the wet season or the functional period of the check dam. However, the amphibian compositions in both check dam and non-check dam streams were similar to each other in the dry season. No significant check dam effect was found on species composition in the terrestrial habitats in both seasons. Overall, using a highly moisture-sensitive vertebrate as a bio-indicator, the results showed that the check dams and the changes in moisture-related physical factors appear to have little short-term effect on amphibian assemblages.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that nonlinear transects, such as the L‐, V‐ and W‐shaped transect, which are widely used in soil sampling but rarely in ecology, may perform better in capturing habitat heterogeneity potentially resulting in more accurate small game species estimates, than straight‐line transects. To test this, we computed and compared the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) captured by the straight‐line, L‐shaped, V‐shaped and W‐shaped transects for Kyle Game Reserve (Zimbabwe), inside the home ranges of two small game species, namely species A and species B. These transects differed in geometry but had the same length. We also performed simulations in a geographic information system environment to compare the detection ability of the different transect geometry. One‐way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's honest significant difference test was used to test for significant differences in the mean number of detections and NDVI variance captured by each transect geometry. Simulations results indicate that for both home ranges, the V‐shaped transect resulted in significantly higher detections than the widely used straight‐line transect. Nonlinear transects also yielded higher NDVI variances than the straight‐line transect in both home ranges.  相似文献

中国科学院西双版纳热带植物园(简称“版纳植物园”)保存着上万种植物,且生境多样,具有较高的蝴蝶多样性。本研究选择三类代表性生境:片段化雨林、次生林和专类园,聚焦于环境指示物种蝴蝶这一类群,通过样线法系统调查一年内蝴蝶多样性及其变化。观测结果显示:蝴蝶在版纳植物园内全年发生,共调查到其成虫5科126属218种6 015头,其中蛱蝶科多样性最高。蝴蝶种类及数量随月动态变化,生境间有差异,7-8月种类和数量达到最高峰;1月种类最少,而5-6月数量最低;每月均出现的种类仅有12种,绝大部分种类分散发生于不同月份。影响蝴蝶群落多样性的气候因子中,月最高温显著影响蝴蝶群落的物种丰富度和数量,月最低温显著影响物种丰富度、香农多样性和辛普森多样性,月平均温仅显著影响香农多样性。在版纳的三个典型季节中蝴蝶多样性存在差异,雨季物种丰富度最高,干热季香农和辛普森指数最高;雨季和雾凉季蝴蝶群落组成差异大,仅雾凉季与干热季的蝴蝶群落呈现中等程度相似。此外,在片段化雨林、次生林和专类园这3种不同生境中,蝴蝶群落组成也存在差异,蝴蝶物种丰富度和香农指数在次生林中最高,而辛普森指数则是片段化雨林最高;仅次生林与片段化雨林的蝴蝶群落呈现出中等程度相似。本研究揭示了版纳植物园蝴蝶群落的种类组成与月动态变化规律,并明确了不同季节和生境中蝴蝶群落的多样性变化,可为区域蝴蝶多样性观测及保护提供参考依据。  相似文献

The spatial distribution of species is affected by dispersal barriers, local environmental conditions and climate. However, the effect of species dispersal and their adaptation to the environment across geographic scales is poorly understood. To investigate the distribution of species from local to broad geographic scales, we sampled termites in 198 transects distributed in 13 sampling grids in the Brazilian Amazonian forest. The sampling grids encompassed an area of 271 500 km2 and included the five major biogeographic regions delimited by Amazonian rivers. Environmental data for each transect were obtained from local measurements and remote sensing. Similar to previous studies, termite species composition at the local scale was mostly associated with measures of soil texture and chemistry. In contrast, termite species composition at broad geographic scales was associated with soil nutrients, and the geographic position of the transects. Between 17 and 30% of the variance in termite species composition could be attributed exclusively to the geographic position of the transects, but could not be attributed to measured environmental variables or the presence of major rivers. Isolation by distance may have strong effects on termite species composition due to historic processes and the spatially structured environments along distinct geological formations of Amazonia. However, in contrast to many taxa in Amazonia, there is no evidence that major rivers are important barriers to termite dispersal.  相似文献

Abstract: Distance sampling has been identified as a reliable and well-suited method for estimating northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) density. However, distance sampling using walked transects requires intense sampling to obtain precise estimates, thus making the technique impractical for large acreages. Researchers have addressed this limitation by either resorting to the use of indices (e.g., morning covey-call surveys) or incorporating the use of aerial surveys with distance sampling. Both approaches remain relatively untested. Our objectives were to 1) compare density estimates among morning covey-call surveys, helicopter transects, and walked transects; 2) test a critical assumption of distance sampling pertinent to helicopter surveys (i.e., all objects on line are detected); and 3) evaluate the underlying premise of morning covey-call surveys (i.e., that the no. of calling coveys correlates with bobwhite density). Our study was conducted on 3 study sites in Brooks County, Texas, USA, during October to December, 2001 to 2005. Comparisons between walked transects and morning covey-call surveys involved the entire 5-year data set, whereas helicopter transects involved only the latter 2 years. Density estimates obtained from helicopter transects were similar to walked transect estimates for both years. We documented a detection probability on the helicopter transect line of 70 ± 10.2% (% ± SE; n = 20 coveys). Morning covey-call surveys yielded similar density estimates to walked transect estimates during only 2 of 5 years, when walked transect estimates were the least accurate and precise. We detected a positive relationship (R2 = 0.51; 95% CI for slope: 29.5–53.1; n = 63 observations) between covey density and number of coveys heard calling. We conclude that helicopter transects appear to be a viable alternative to walked transects for estimating density of bobwhites. Morning covey-call surveys appear to be a poor method to estimate absolute abundance and to depict general population trajectories.  相似文献
