Slow rusting is considered a crucial component of durable resistance to wheat leaf rust caused by Puccinia triticina and is often expressed in the form of a prolonged latent period. Selection for a longer latent period is considered an effective approach to developing wheat cultivars with improved durable resistance to leaf rust. A recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from CI 13227 (long latent period) × Suwon 92 (short latent period) was phenotyped for latent period in two greenhouse experiments in separate years, and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were analyzed in the same population. Among the RILs, the frequency distribution for latent period was continuous, and latent period was highly correlated between years (r=0.94, P<0.0001). A quantitative trait locus (QTL) prolonging the latent period of P. triticina, designated as QLrlp.osu-2DS, explained 42.8% and 54.5% of the phenotypic and genetic variance in the two experiments, respectively. QLrlp.osu-2DS was mapped on the distal region of chromosome 2DS. Two other QTLs for latent period, QLrlp.osu-2B and QLrlp.osu-7BL, were localized on chromosome 2B and the long arm of chromosome 7B, respectively. Multiple regression analysis showed that these three QTLs collectively explained 58.0% and 73.8% of the phenotypic and genetic variance over two experiments, respectively. Fourteen RILs that carried all three alleles for long latent period at three AFLP loci flanking QLrlp.osu-2DS, QLrlp.osu-2B, and QLrlp.osu-7BL had a mean latent period of 12.5 days, whereas 13 RILs without any long-latent-period alleles at the corresponding loci had a mean latent period of 7.4 days. Three SSR markers closely linked to these QTLs have potential to be applied in marker-assisted selection for prolonged latent period in wheat.  相似文献

Primula sieboldii E. Morren is a clonal herbaceous species with a short foliar period from spring to early summer. We have studied the temperature-dependence of the rate of respiration at the whole-ramet level throughout the phenological stages of P. sieboldii to reveal its photosynthate-utilization strategy. P. sieboldii ramets were grown in a chamber enabling simulation of seasonal changes in temperature. Rates of respiration were measured at three phenological stages—the foliar period, the before-chilling defoliated (BCD) period, and the after-chilling defoliated (ACD) period. In the foliar period the rate of respiration, on a biomass basis at 20°C (R 20), of the above-ground plant parts was 2.5 times that of the below-ground parts. The R 20 of the below-ground parts in the foliar period was 6.5 times that in the BCD period and 1.6 times that in the ACD period. Estimation of the ramet carbon balance under these growth conditions showed that ramets respired 87% of total photosynthate production during the experimental period (8.5 months). Respiratory consumption in the foliar period accounted for 70% of the yearly total, whereas 24 and 6% were consumed in the BCD and ACD periods, respectively. An extremely low rate of respiration during the long defoliated period led to a positive net annual carbon balance for P. sieboldii ramets.  相似文献

The epibiotic flagellate Colacium vesiculosum Pringsheim attaches to planktonic species of Daphnia in freshwater habitats. Previous studies found that prevalence (percentage of substrate organisms carrying attached epibionts) and intensity (number of attached epibionts on a given substrate organism) are low early in the Daphnia intermolt period and are high late in the intermolt period. We tested the hypothesis that increases of Colacium cells attached to Daphnia occur both by rapid initial and continuous colonization and by cell reproduction. Epibiont prevalence and intensities were determined at successive intermolt stages of Daphnia pulex Leydig collected from freshwater ponds in Colorado. Colonization was continuous throughout the intermolt period and was most important to epibiont population increase at the beginning of the intermolt period. Cell division was the major contributor to epibiont increase at the end of the intermolt period.  相似文献

Anabarilius grahami is a cyprinoid fish endemic to Fuxian Lake, Yunnan, China. In this study, a comprehensive staging series of A. grahami was produced. The embryonic development of A. grahami was divided into six main periods: zygote period, cleavage period, blastula period, gastrula period, segmentation period and hatching period. Its embryonic development is essentially similar to that of zebrafish Danio rerio but relatively slower. The expression patterns of A. grahami sox2, pax6a, six3a and rx2 genes were also cloned and checked during eye development. The four genes showed similar expression patterns to their D. rerio homologues, suggesting the evolutionary conservation of the regulatory network of eye development.  相似文献

In the Maujahn peat bog the Slavic period is recorded with a high-resolution pollen diagram in 150 cm of the peat profile. In the upper part of the pollen diagram the time resolution is 3.2 years in the middle and lower part 5.2 years. The Slavic period can be divided into four stages according to different kind of land use and intensity of human influence. The main crop was Secale; less important was the cultivation of Triticum, Panicum, Hordeum, Avena and Pisum. The Slavic period lasted from about a.d. 800–1200. In the southern Gulf of Mexico, the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, is one of the most frequently captured species in landings of small-scale fisheries. Based on the analysis of two fishery-dependent sampling periods (1993–1994 and 2007–2014), this study aimed to determine reproductive parameters and identify temporal differences between the two time periods. In the first sampling period, 776 males and 352 females with a size range of 28.0–120.0 cm total stretched length (LT) were analysed, and in the second sampling period, 387 males and 432 females with a size range of 28.0–122.0 cm LT were analysed. The size at 50% maturity in the second sampling period was significantly different between sexes, 82.6 cm LT for females and 73.8 cm LT for males (no estimation was possible for the first sampling period). The size at 50% maternity was not different between sampling periods, 97.3 cm LT for the first sampling period and 99.0 cm LT for the second sampling period. Litter size varied from 3 to 19 embryos and the average was not statistically different in both periods, 10.1 (S.D. = 3.8) for the first sampling period and 11.3 (S.D. = 3.5) for the second sampling period. The female reproductive cycle is asynchronous, and it seems to be annual, with a gestation period of 5–6 months, and a consecutive ovarian cycle and gestation period. Temporal (between sampling periods) and latitudinal (southern Gulf versus northern regions) variations occur in the synchronicity of the reproductive cycle, temporal variation in the relationship between maternal length and litter size, and latitudinal variation in average size of mature sharks.  相似文献

Summary The microspectrophotometric study of the amount of DNA in the course of the interphase of synchronous binucleate cells, experimentally induced in the roots of the onion (Allium cepa), at 30° C, showed that the rate of DNA synthesis does not appear to be constant throughout the interphase, being greater at the beginning and end of the S period and slower during the middle part of the period.We found that the G 1 period occupies from 0% at 10% of the cell cycle, the S period about 81% and G 2 period plus mitosis about 14%.Contrary to our expectations, highly significant differences were found in the DNA content of the two nuclei of more than 1% of the binucleate cells, which suggests that DNA synthesis may be asynchronous in the two nuclei within a common cytoplasm.  相似文献

Microfouling biomass generally increased on aluminium panels immersed in the surface waters of a tropical estuary over a period of 30 d. A hundred bacterial colonies were randomly isolated, purified and morphologically, physiologically and biochemically characterised. There was an obvious difference in colony morphology during the period of immersion. Most of the colonies were motile, catalase and oxidase positive Gram negative rods. Pseudomonas was the most abundant initial colonizer during the first 24 h following immersion, and Flavobacterium and Alkaligenes were common throughout the immersion period. Representatives of the Enterobacteriaceae were present only during the first 7 d after immersion. Vibrio was the most predominant organism and its abundance generally increased over the period of immersion. Alkaligenes exhibited a decreasing trend over the 22 d immersion period followed by an increase in abundance at day 30 after immersion. However, no particular trend was observed for Flavobacteria.

The isolates were screened for their cell surface hydrophobicity using the BATH method. Most of the isolates were hydrophilic. However, as the period of immersion increased there was a relative increase in cell surface hydrophobicity of the isolates.  相似文献

Pollen ontogeny and sporoderm development in Aristolochia manshuriensis were studied for elaboration of the inaperturete pollen ontogeny in Aristolochia. Despite the formation of apertures in the tetrad period, the sporoderm in A. manshuriensis becomes inaperturate at the end of the free microspore period. A similar immature exine is also detected in A. macrophylla. Variants of aperture formation in the tetrad period in A. manshuriensis or formation of a polar aperture in the free microspore period in A. clematitis are associated with types of microsporogenesis. The ectexine and endexine in A. manshuriensis are formed over a longer time and reached much greater thickness than those in A. clematitis. The endexine and intine in A. manshuriensis do not reach a mature state, similar to A. clematitis. The exine of A. manshuriensis cracks, releasing a pollen tube enveloped by the intine. This fact does not hinder the functioning of the male gametophyte of A. manshuriensis.  相似文献

An optical remote assay for biological production of crops in the field during the vegetation period is proposed. Our calculations demonstrate a good correlation between the S(t) value and crop yield (in the range from 0.85 to 0.90); the higher is S(t) for the vegetation period, the higher is the crop yield. S(t) value can be used to calculate the increase in dry and wet biomass for various crops during the whole vegetation period with an error of less than 10–12%. The absolute error of crop yield for 110 cultivars of wheat, oats, and barley during the experimental period was ±3–3.5 quintal/ha with the mean crop yield of 14–38 quintal/ha.  相似文献

Evidence of an atmospheric CO2‐fertilization effect on radial growth rates was uncovered for open‐grown white spruce in a mixed‐grass prairie of southwestern Manitoba, Canada. Consistent upward trends of the residuals from dendroclimatic models indicated a decreased ability for climatic parameters to predict radial growth. Despite that a similar amount (61%) of the total variation in radial growth index was explained by climate for both young and old trees, residuals from young trees for the period of 1955–1999 demonstrated a stronger upward trend (R2=0.551, P<0.0001) than old trees for the period of 1900–1996 (R2=0.020, P=0.167). Similar to young trees, the residuals from the early growth period (1900–1929) of old trees also demonstrated a stronger upward trend (R2=0.480, P<0.0001) than the period of 1900–1996. Likewise, a comparable period (1970–1999) of young trees also demonstrated a stronger upward trend (R2=0.619, P<0.0001) than the early growth period (1900–1929) of old trees. In addition, postdrought growth response was much stronger for young trees (1970–1999) compared with old trees at the same development stage (1900–1929) (P=0.011) or within the same time period (1970–1999) (P=0.014). There was no difference (P=0.221) in drought recovery between the early (1900–1929) period and the late (1970–1999) period within old trees. Together, our results suggest that (1) open‐grown white spruce trees improved their growth with time at the early developmental stage, and (2) at the same developmental stage, a greater growth response occurred in the late period when atmospheric CO2 concentration, and the rate of atmospheric CO2 increase were both relatively high. While it is impossible to rule out other factors, these results are consistent with expectations for CO2‐fertilization effects.  相似文献

The density (fresh weight/volume) of the detached thalli of four sargassacean species (Myagropsis myagroides, Sargassum horneri, S. patens, S. siliquastrum) was measured weekly to determine their floating period. Thalli of the four species were collected with respect to the difference in their reproductive stage, and their floating abilities at different stages were determined. Floating thallus was ballasted with pre-weighed leads until the final addition of a weight caused sinking. The density and floating period of sargassacean thalli were dependent on the species and the specimens’ reproductive stage. The floating period of thalli detached before maturation was estimated to be between 4 and 14 weeks. However, thalli detached during maturation had a floating period of between 1 and 8 weeks, and those detached after maturation sank within 2 weeks. Sargassum horneri had the lowest density and the longest floating period among the four species investigated and this may explain the high abundance of S. horneri in floating seaweeds observed in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

A nitrogen source was needed for the flowering of Lemna gibba L., a long-day plant, and L. perpusilla Torr., a shortday plant. The level of endogenous amino acids analyzed by an Amino Acid Analyzer, rose during the first few inductive cycles, but was reduced during later stages of the flowering process. Serine and threonine levels increased during the light period and decreased during the dark period in L. perpusilla. Exogenous serine and threonine added to the culture medium at 10?6M increased the rate of flowering by more than 35% over the controls. Cysteine inhibited flowering, while other amino acids had little or no promotive effect on flowering. Serine and threonine increased flowering rate in L. perpusilla only when added during a dark period of the inductive cycle. The addition of amino acids during a light period not followed by a dark period had no effect on flowering.  相似文献

Building on the Weibull distribution, we develop a modeled time-varying density function of the incubation time between exposure to HIV infection and full-blown AIDS. This approach leads to a series of cohort-specific density functions that take into account the increasing impact of new therapies such as zidovudine (AZT). The resulting modeled density functions are studied in detail, particularly with regard to their modes and medians. The mode is sensitive to changes in the period incubation time distribution, with even a possibility of a bimodal distribution for certain combinations of the parameters that determine the rate at which the period median incubation time changes. An important substantive result is that when a period median incubation period slowly increases to some leveling off value, say m(x c ), then it is surprisingly early on that cohorts of infected individuals have a median incubation period very close to that ultimate value m(x c ).  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess juvenile fish communities in terms of species composition, fish diversity and density in the littoral zone of the Kaunas reservoir before (in 1989–1990, period I) and after (in 1999–2000, period II, and in 2006–2007, period III) launching the Kruonis hydroelectric pumped plant (Kruonis HPP). During the whole research period, 20 fish species were caught. According to the frequency of occurrence, the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, European perch Perca fluviatilis and roach Rutilus rutilus were regarded as constant species in all investigated periods. Significant differences were established in juvenile fish community density between period I and periods II and III, whereas species richness (S) and species diversity indices (H′, J′) did not change significantly. The density of the shoreline community in period III was more than two times lower than in period I, probably due to higher fluctuations in water level of the reservoir, resulting from the Kruonis HPP operation.  相似文献

A colony ofAmblyomma parvum was started with engorged females collected from cattle in the Province of Salta (25°01 S, 63°56 W), Argentina. The progeny of those ticks were fed on rabbits and the non-parasitic stages maintained at 27±1°C, 83–86% RH in darkness. The life cycle (prefeeding period not evaluated) had a mean duration of 99.6 days. The mean time (days) for the different phases of the cycle were as follows: feeding period of females, 8.0; pre-oviposition period, 5.7; oviposition period, 17.5; minimum incubation period of the eggs, 31.8; feeding period of larvae, 3.2; premoult period to nymphs, 10.9; feeding period of nymphs, 4.7; premoult period to adults, 17.8. The oviposition pattern was typical of an ixodid tick, including a linear relationship between weights of engorged females and the number of eggs laid (r=0.8659). The males increased 18% in weight after feeding on hosts (P<0.01). The mean recovery rates of larvae, nymphs and females were 28.2%, 95.3% and 90.7%, respectively. The nymphs moulting to females were heavier (6.8±0.69 mg) than those moulting to males (3.2±0.29 mg) (P<0.01). The population dynamics of Rhipicephalus microplus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) in northwest Argentina was analysed to support the design of strategic methods for its control. Both parasitic and non‐parasitic phases were studied. The seasonal activity of R. microplus in its parasitic phase was characterized by three peaks in abundance: the first in mid–late spring; the second in summer, and the third in autumn. The non‐parasitic phase of R. microplus was characterized by a long total non‐parasitic period observed after exposures of females from mid‐summer to early autumn, a short total non‐parasitic period observed after exposures of females from late winter to late spring, a short period of larval longevity in early and mid‐summer, and no hatch of the eggs produced by females exposed in mid‐ and late autumn and winter. Treatments of cattle administered during the period from late winter to late spring will act on small cohorts of R. microplus, preventing the emergence of larger generations in summer and autumn. A 17‐week spelling period starting in late spring and early summer will be necessary to achieve optimal control of R. microplus free‐living larvae. If spelling begins in mid‐ or late summer or in autumn, the required period will be 26–27 weeks.  相似文献

The period length of the circadian conidiation rhythm was examined in a mutant strain of Neurospora crassa, un-18, that is temperature sensitive for mycelial growth. The un-18 mutant showed a temperature-sensitive phenotype with respect to both mycelial growth and the period length of the conidiation rhythm. Below 22° C, the un-18 mutation did not affect the period length, but at temperatures between 22° C and 32° C, the period length of the un-18 mutant was ∼2 h longer than that of the wild-type strain. The un-18 + gene was cloned and was found to encode the second-largest subunit of RNA polymerase I, which is involved in the synthesis of rRNA. These results indicate that a defect in ribosome synthesis, which must result in a lower rate of protein synthesis, lengthens the period of the circadian conidiation rhythm in Neurospora. Evidence is provided showing that in two species of Phaeocystis (P. globosa and P. pouchetii) the colonial cells possess a much higher growth rate than the single cells when grown under identical conditions. Based on the DNA-cell-cycle method gross growth rate of colony cells exceeded those of co-occurring single cells by a factor 1.5 up to 3.8. The dominance of colonies in blooms of Phaeocystis can therefore be primarily due to their significantly high growth rate allowing a rapid bloom formation.Both Phaeocystis species showed ultradian growth but differed in timing of the initiation of the second DNA replication phase. In both species the first DNA-replication period started at the end of the (local) light period and was completed in the early dark period. In P. globosa this was immediately followed by the second DNA-replication period (first half of the dark period). In P. pouchetii this process was delayed by ca. 12 h until the middle of the light period (local noon).Flow cytometric analysis of the cell size and chlorophyll fluorescence showed little variation in colony and single cells of P. pouchetii. In contrast, colonies of P. globosa showed often the presence of two cell morphs, co-occurring in the same colony. The size of both morphs was identical but they differed in chlorophyll fluorescence up to a factor 4. In general the high chlorophyll cell morph dominated (>70% of the total colony cells). Both colony cell morphs were observed in cultures, mesocosms differing in N/P ratio but also in the field.  相似文献
