  • ● Many angiosperms are hermaphroditic and produce bisexual flowers in which male (pollen export) and female (stigma receptivity) functions are separated temporally. This sequential hermaphroditism may be associated with variation in flower size, color, or pattern, all of which may influence pollinator attraction. In this study, we describe variation in these traits across discrete functional sex stages within and between 225 greenhouse‐grown individuals of Clarkia unguiculata (Onagraceae). In addition, to identify the effects of floral phenotype on pollinator attraction in this species, we examine the effects of these floral traits on pollen receipt in ~180 individuals in an experimental field array.
  • ● Petal area, ultraviolet (UV)‐absorbing nectar guide area, and blue and green mean petal reflectance differ significantly across the functional sex stages of C. unguiculata. Male‐ and female‐phase flowers display significantly different pollinator attraction traits. Petal and UV nectar guide area increase as flowers progress from male phase to female phase, while blue reflectance and green reflectance peak during anther maturation.
  • ● In field arrays of C. unguiculata, female‐phase flowers with large UV nectar guides receive more pollen than those with small nectar guides, and female‐phase flowers with high mean blue reflectance values are more likely to receive pollen than those with low blue reflectance. Female‐phase flowers with green mean reflectance values that differ most from background foliage also receive more pollen than those that are more similar to foliage. These findings indicate that components of flower color and pattern influence pollen receipt, independent of other plant attributes that may covary with floral traits. We discuss these results in the context of hypotheses that have been proposed to explain sex‐specific floral attraction traits, and we suggest future research that could improve our understanding of sexual dimorphism in sequentially hermaphroditic species and the evolution of features that promote outcrossing.

Little information is still available on the mechanisms underlying seed persistence in the soil in several species, and most particularly in vegetation of the rupestrian fields of the Espinhaço Range in Brazil, where ca. 90% of their species are endemic and are of interest for conservation biology. Here we aimed at examining the putative physiological and biochemical changes seeds of one of this species (Vellozia alata L.B.Sm., Velloziaceae) may experience after burial under natural conditions. Endogenous concentrations of phytohormones and oxidative stress markers were measured in seeds buried in the soil for 12 months. Buried seeds experienced a significant loss of germination capacity, which decreased from 58 to 29% during the first 6 months. This was associated with a decline in gibberellins (by 65%), abscisic acid (by 98%), cytokinins (up to 75%) and jasmonic acid (by 97%) during the first 3 months, while salicylic acid increased at 6 months of burial. Malondialdehyde and tocopherol levels also decreased dramatically to non-detectable values during this period, while all tocotrienol homologues decreased by 30%. By contrast, germination capacity remained constant around 30% between 6 and 12 months of burial. During this period, concentrations of all phytohormones examined remained unaltered, except for salicylic acid, whose levels returned to initial values. Tocotrienols decreased significantly, particularly between 9 and 12 months of burial, while the extent of lipid peroxidation remained constant. It is concluded that in V. alata, (i) seed burial causes dramatic changes in phytohormones and in the extent of lipid peroxidation, while the potential for germination decreases; (ii) after 6 months of burial, seed germination capacity remains constant, at least until one year, which is associated with absence of oxidative damage.  相似文献

Aims Pollinators are traditionally considered to be the primary agent of selection on floral traits. However, floral traits may also be under selection from abiotic agents (e.g. rain), which makes considering the relative importance of pollinators and abiotic selective agents on floral traits essential. The functional significance of floral orientation is often ascribed to pollinator attraction, but orientation can also protect reproductive structures from rain. Therefore, a study that incorporates both factors will enhance our understanding of the ecological roles of floral orientation in plant fitness.Mertensia brevistylaandM. fusiformisare herbaceous species that differ in their floral orientations. A series of field and laboratory experiments was used to investigate the adaptive function of floral orientation in these species, particularly with respect to pollinators and rain.  相似文献

In species with broad distribution, geographic variation could be associated to particular environmental factors that may affect plant reproduction. In dimorphic species, environmental factors may influence evolutionary processes governing sex ratio variation and floral traits evolution. Kallstroemia grandiflora is an annual insect‐pollinated gynodioecious herb with broad distribution from the Sonoran desert to the semiarid west coast of Mexico. In this study, we explored if female frequency increases in harsh environments and the associated changes in floral morphology in female and hermaphrodite plants. We selected 23 populations along the pacific coast of Mexico where we estimated female frequency and in eight of them we also measured flower size in hermaphrodite and female plants. The average decrease in precipitation was correlated with the increase in female frequency, and a reduction in the flower size of hermaphrodite plants. Our results support the idea that harsh environments may influence female frequency, but also flower size and possibly breeding system evolution.  相似文献

Tomato crop productivity under salinity can be improved by grafting cultivars onto salt-tolerant wild relatives, thus mediating the supply of root-derived ionic and hormonal factors that regulate leaf area and senescence. A tomato cultivar was grafted onto rootstocks from a population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a Solanum lycopersicum  ×  Solanum cheesmaniae cross and cultivated under moderate salinity (75 m m NaCl). Concentrations of Na+, K+ and several phytohormones [abscisic acid (ABA); the cytokinins (CKs) zeatin, Z; zeatin riboside, ZR; and the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC)] were analysed in leaf xylem sap in graft combinations of contrasting vigour. Scion leaf area correlated with photosystem II (PSII) efficiency ( F v/ F m) and determined fruit productivity. Xylem K+ (but not Na+), K+/Na+, the active CK Z, the ratio with its storage form Z/ZR and especially the ratio between CKs and ACC (Z/ACC and Z + ZR/ACC) were positively loaded into the first principal component (PC) determining both leaf growth and PSII efficiency. In contrast, the ratio ACC/ABA was negatively correlated with leaf biomass. Although the underlying physiological mechanisms by which rootstocks mediate leaf area or chlorophyll fluorescence (and thus influence tomato salt tolerance) seem complex, a putative potassium–CK interaction involved in regulating both processes merits further attention.  相似文献

Smoking during pregnancy is associated with deleterious physiological and cognitive effects on the offspring, which are likely due to nicotine‐induced alteration in the development of neurotransmitter systems. Prenatal nicotine exposure (PNE) in rodents is associated with changes in behaviors controlled in part by the pontine laterodorsal tegmentum (LDT), and LDT excitatory signaling is altered in a sex and age‐dependent manner by PNE. As effects on GABAergic LDT signaling are unknown, we used calcium imaging to evaluate GABAA receptor‐ (GABAAR as well as GABAAρR) and GABAB receptor (GABABR)‐mediated calcium responses in LDT brain slices from female and male PNE mice in two different age groups. Overall, in older PNE females, changes in calcium induced by stimulation of GABAAR and GABABR, including GABAAρR were shifted toward calcium rises. In both young and old males, PNE was associated with alterations in calcium mediated by all three receptors; however, the GABAAR was the most affected. These results show for the first time that PNE is associated with alterations in GABAergic transmission in the LDT in a sex‐ and age‐dependent manner, and these data are the first to show PNE‐associated alterations in functionality of GABA receptors in any nucleus. PNE‐associated alterations in LDT GABAergic transmission within the LDT would be expected to alter output to target regions and could play a role in LDT‐implicated, negative behavioral outcomes following gestational exposure to smoking. Accordingly, our data provide further supportive evidence of the importance of eliminating the consumption of nicotine during pregnancy.  相似文献

Sexual selection may contribute to the evolution of plant sexual dimorphism by favoring architectural traits in males that improve pollen dispersal to mates. In both sexes, larger individuals may be favored by allowing the allocation of more resources to gamete production (a “budget” effect of size). In wind‐pollinated plants, large size may also benefit males by allowing the liberation of pollen from a greater height, fostering its dispersal (a “direct” effect of size). To assess these effects and their implications for trait selection, we measured selection on plant morphology in both males and females of the wind‐pollinated dioecious herb Mercurialis annua in two separate experimental common gardens at contrasting density. In both gardens, selection strongly favored males that disperse their pollen further. Selection for pollen production was observed in the high‐density garden only, and was weak. In addition, male morphologies associated with increased mean pollen dispersal differed between the two gardens, as elongated branches were favored in the high‐density garden, whereas shorter plants with longer inflorescence stalks were favored in the low‐density garden. Larger females were selected in both gardens. Our results point to the importance of both a direct effect of selection on male traits that affect pollen dispersal, and, to a lesser extent, a budget effect of selection on pollen production.  相似文献

  1. Water stress and increasing temperatures are two main constraints faced by plants in the context of climate change. These constraints affect plant physiology and morphology, including phenology, floral traits, and nectar rewards, thus altering plant–pollinator interactions.
  2. We compared the abiotic stress responses of two bee‐pollinated Boraginaceae species, Echium plantagineum, an annual, and Echium vulgare, a biennial. Plants were grown for 5 weeks during their flowering period under two watering regimes (well‐watered and water‐stressed) and three temperature regimes (21, 24, 27°C).
  3. We measured physiological traits linked to photosynthesis (chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency), and vegetative (leaf number and growth rate) and floral (e.g., flower number, phenology, floral morphology, and nectar production) traits.
  4. The physiological and morphological traits of both species were affected by the water and temperature stresses, although the effects were greater for the annual species. Both stresses negatively affected floral traits, accelerating flower phenology, decreasing flower size, and, for the annual species, decreasing nectar rewards. In both species, the number of flowers was reduced by 22%–45% under water stress, limiting the total amount of floral rewards.
  5. Under water stress and increasing temperatures, which mimic the effects of climate change, floral traits and resources of bee‐pollinated species are affected and can lead to disruptions of pollination and reproductive success.

Enantiostyly is a form of reciprocal herkogamy, in which floral morphs present reciprocal differences in the position of sexual elements, and occurs in monomorphic and dimorphic forms. This polymorphism maximises cross‐pollination and reduces self‐pollination, being very common within the subtribe Cassiinae (Fabaceae). Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the functionality of enantiostyly, particularly in this plant group. The present study aimed to investigate enantiostyly and its functionality in Chamaecrista ramosa, a monomorphic enantiostylous shrub, in an area of coastal vegetation in northeast Brazil. Pollen deposition and capture on the body of floral visitors, the relationship of these data with floral biology and breeding system, and morph ratio were evaluated. Pollen deposition and capture occurred in specific sites of the floral visitor body, showing the functionality of enantiostyly. The floral architecture, associated with the floral visitor behaviour, resulted in indirect pollen deposition on the floral visitor body. This occurred through a loop made by the pollen upon the inner petal surface, similar that generally reported for other Cassiinae. Chamaecrista ramosa is self‐compatible, although no fruit set was observed through spontaneous self‐pollination. The occurrence and number of floral morphs was similar within clumps. Enantiostyly seems to be advantageous for this species, as it results in efficient pollen capture and deposition, reduces the chances of autogamy and maximises intermorph pollen flow.  相似文献

The chemical 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) regulates plant growth and development and mimics auxins in exhibiting a biphasic mode of action. Although gene regulation in response to the natural auxin indole acetic acid (IAA) has been examined, the molecular mode of action of 2,4-D is poorly understood. Data from biochemical studies, (Grossmann (2000) Mode of action of auxin herbicides: a new ending to a long, drawn out story. Trends Plant Sci 5:506–508) proposed that at high concentrations, auxins and auxinic herbicides induced the plant hormones ethylene and abscisic acid (ABA), leading to inhibited plant growth and senescence. Further, in a recent gene expression study (Raghavan et al. (2005) Effect of herbicidal application of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in Arabidopsis. Funct Integr Genomics 5:4–17), we have confirmed that at high concentrations, 2,4-D induced the expression of the gene NCED1, which encodes 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase, a key regulatory enzyme of ABA biosynthesis. To understand the concentration-dependent mode of action of 2,4-D, we further examined the regulation of whole genome of Arabidopsis in response to a range of 2,4-D concentrations from 0.001 to 1.0 mM, using the ATH1-121501 Arabidopsis whole genome microarray developed by Affymetrix. Results of this study indicated that 2,4-D induced the expression of auxin-response genes (IAA1, IAA13, IAA19) at both auxinic and herbicidal levels of application, whereas the TIR1 and ASK1 genes, which are associated with ubiquitin-mediated auxin signalling, were down-regulated in response to low concentrations of 2,4-D application. It was also observed that in response to low concentrations of 2,4-D, ethylene biosynthesis was induced, as suggested by the up-regulation of genes encoding 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) synthase and ACC oxidase. Although genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis were not regulated in response to 0.1 and 1.0 mM 2,4-D, ethylene signalling was induced as indicated by the down-regulation of CTR1 and ERS, both of which play a key role in the ethylene signalling pathway. In response to 1.0 mM 2,4-D, both ABA biosynthesis and signalling were induced, in contrast to the response to lower concentrations of 2,4-D where ABA biosynthesis was suppressed. We present a comprehensive model indicating a molecular mode of action for 2,4-D in Arabidopsis and the effects of this growth regulator on the auxin, ethylene and abscisic acid pathways. Documenting the morph-specific variation of floral traits associated with reciprocal herkogamy is of special importance for revealing the functional significance of traits in the evolution and maintenance of the heterostylous syndrome. In order to describe the extent and specificity of variation, stigma height, anther height, stigma-anther separation and corolla tube length were measured on 800 flowers collected in two natural populations of Primula vulgaris and P. veris. Beside the almost complete separation of stigma heights between the two morphs, we found appreciable intermorph overlap in anther height and relatively broad range of stigma-anther separation so far reported for heterostylous species. The corolla tube length–stigma-anther separation relationship showed striking difference between the two floral morphs, which supports the hypothesis that length of the corolla tube plays a more important role in positioning the sex-organs in the appropriate distance in the short-styled than in the long-styled morph.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that F‐box proteins constitute a large family in eukaryotes, and play pivotal roles in regulating various developmental processes in plants. However, their functions in monocots are still obscure. In this study, we characterized a recessive mutant dwarf and deformed flower 1‐1 (ddf1‐1) in Oryza sativa (rice). The mutant is abnormal in both vegetative and reproductive development, with significant size reduction in all organs except the spikelet. DDF1 controls organ size by regulating both cell division and cell expansion. In the ddf1‐1 spikelet, the specification of floral organs in whorls 2 and 3 is altered, with most lodicules and stamens being transformed into glume‐like organs and pistil‐like organs, respectively, but the specification of lemma/palea and pistil in whorls 1 and 4 is not affected. DDF1 encodes an F‐box protein anchored in the nucleolus, and is expressed in almost all vegetative and reproductive tissues. Consistent with the mutant floral phenotype, DDF1 positively regulates B‐class genes OsMADS4 and OsMADS16, and negatively regulates pistil specification gene DL. In addition, DDF1 also negatively regulates the Arabidopsis LFY ortholog APO2, implying a functional connection between DDF1 and APO2. Collectively, these results revealed that DDF1, as a newly identified F‐box gene, is a crucial genetic factor with pleiotropic functions for both vegetative growth and floral organ specification in rice. These findings provide additional insights into the molecular mechanism controlling monocot vegetative and reproductive development.  相似文献

The leaves of 30-d-old plants of Brassica juncea Czern & Coss cv. Varuna were sprayed with 10–6 M aqueous solutions of indole-3-yl-acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA3), kinetin (KIN), and abscisic acid (ABA) or 10–8 M of 28-homobrassinolide (HBR). All the phytohormones, except ABA, improved the vegetative growth and seed yield at harvest, compared with those sprayed with deionised water (control). HBR was most prominent in its effect, generating 32, 30, 36, 70, 25, and 29 % higher values for dry mass, chlorophyll content, carbonic anhydrase (E.C. 4.2.1.1) activity, and net photosynthetic rate in 60-d-old plants, pods per plant, and seed yield at harvest, over the control, respectively. The order of response to various hormones was HBR > GA3 > IAA > KIN > control > ABA.  相似文献
