We examined patterns of variation and the extent of local adaptation in the interaction between the highly selfing annual weed Arabidopsis thaliana and its foliar bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas viridiflava by cross-infecting 23 bacterial isolates with 35 plant lines collected from six fallow or cultivated fields in the Midwest, USA. We used two measures of resistance and virulence: bacterial count in the leaf and symptom development four days after infection. We found variation in resistance in A. thaliana and virulence in P. viridiflava, as well as a significant difference in symptoms between two distinct genetic clades within P. viridiflava. We also observed that both resistance and plant development rate varied with field type of origin (cultivated or fallow), possibly through age-related resistance, a developmentally regulated general form of resistance. Finally, we did not observe local adaptation by host or pathogen, rather we found patterns of variation across populations that depended in part on P. viridiflava clade. These data suggest that the interaction between A. thaliana and P. viridiflava varies across space and is mediated by the selection regime of the host populations and differential performance of the P. viridiflava clades. This is one of a very limited number of studies examining a bacterial pathogen of wild plant populations and one of a few studies to examine patterns of variation in a plant-pathogen association that is not a highly specialized gene-for-gene interaction.  相似文献

近年来,大量的植物抗病基因和病原菌无毒基因被克隆,抗病基因和无毒基因的结构、功能及其互作关系的研究也取得重大进展。在植物中,由病原菌模式分子(pathogen-associated molecular patterns, PAMPs)引发的免疫反应(PAMP-triggered immunity, PTI)和由效应因子引发的免疫反应(effector-triggered immunity, ETI)是植物在长期进化过程中形成的两类抵抗病原物的机制。PTI反应主要通过细胞表面受体(patternrecognition receptors, PRRs)识别并结合PAMPs从而激活下游免疫反应,而在ETI反应中,则通过植物R基因(resistance gene,R)与病原菌无毒基因(avirulence gene, Avr)产物间的直接或间接相互作用来完成免疫反应。本文对植物PTI反应和ETI反应分别进行了概述,重点探讨了植物R基因与病原菌Avr基因之间的互作遗传机理,并对目前植物抗性分子遗传机制研究和抗病育种中的问题进行了探讨和展望。  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the antifungal activity of mycelia of Pleurotus ostreatus (white oyster mushroom) and licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) root extract against three undesirable fungi. They are Trichoderma spp., Trichoderma harzianum I and Trichoderma harzianum II which was tested on PSA (potato sucrose agar) medium enriched with licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) root extract (PSA-G media) using three concentrations (0.05, 0.10 and 0.20 g/L) in alone and dual cultures. Trichoderma spp. showed less mycelial growth of 8.75, 9.17 and 9.50 mm/day on PSA-G0.05, PSA-G0.1 and PSA-G0.2 respectively compared with 10.25 mm/day on fresh PSA (control) in dual culture. The best mycelial growth inhibition was recorded on PSA-G0.2 (14.97%) by T. harzianum II in alone culture opposite 63.72% in dual ones. The lower mycelial growth rate of T. harzianum I was 17.75 mm/day on PSA-G0.1 (0.10 g/L). In dual culture, overgrowth time of T. harzianum I had 5 days compared as approx. 6 days in alone culture. Generally, when the concentration of licorice extract increased, the mycelial growth rate of the undesirable fungi decreased. Also, all PSA-G media, especially PSA-G0.2, indicated low growth averages compared with the control (fresh PSA) against the pathogen while this concentration encourages growth of oyster mushroom. Also, this concentration reduced the density of sporulation of green molds; therefore, this concentration can be applied to reduce influence this pathogen in cultivation farm.  相似文献

Surface glycoproteins of influenza virus [haemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA)] are vital target proteins in current rational drug designs. Here, the molecular recognitions between juglone and A/H5N1 influenza virus membrane glycoproteins were studied through flexible docking and molecular dynamic simulations. The results revealed that juglone has the binding specificity to HA (H5) and NA (N1), especially the spatial match of 2-cyclohexene-1,4-dione ring. N1 rather than H5 protein is responsible for the binding, with the interaction energies of ? 72.48 and ? 41.91 kcal mol? 1, respectively. The residues Arg152, Arg156, Glu276, Glu277 and Arg292 of N1 protein had important roles during the binding process. Compared with other NA inhibitors, juglone is a potential source of anti-influenza ingredients, with better interaction energy and relatively smaller size. In addition, this work also pointed out how to effectively modify the functional groups of juglone. We hope that the results will aid our understanding of recognitions involving influenza surface glycoproteins with the phenolic compounds and warrant the experimental aspects to design novel anti-influenza drugs.  相似文献

In queenless ants, gamergates (mated egg‐laying workers) fulfil the reproductive task normally reserved for the queen. Every worker is a potential gamergate, thus we expect pronounced conflicts over sexual reproduction within their colonies. In the queenless ant genus Diacamma, gamergates inhibit nest mates from mating by aggressively removing (‘mutilating’) a pair of small appendages on the thorax, termed gemmae, shortly after eclosion. Dissection and serial sectioning of the reproductive tracts of both mutilated and unmutilated individuals of Diacamma sp. from Japan at different ages revealed that mutilation inhibits the development of the bursa copulatrix and the spermatheca, two structures fundamental for sexual reproduction. The precursor of the bursa copulatrix develops into a fully functional structure in unmutilated individuals, whereas it degenerates irreversibly in mutilated callows. Experimental manipulations showed that the removal of the gemmae is not the sole factor regulating this development. The spermathecal epithelium and accessory spermathecal gland of unmutilated individuals are thicker than that of mutilated individuals, indicating a higher degree of activity in the former. Mutilated females are therefore left incapable of copulating and less competent for long‐time sperm storage.  相似文献

The oral cancer gene database has been compiled to enable fast retrieval of updated information and role of the genes implicated in oral cancer. The first version of the database with 242 genes was published in Online Journal of Bioinformatics 8(1), 41-44, 2007. In the second version, the database has been enlarged to include 374 genes by adding 132 gene entries. The architecture and format of the database is similar to the earlier version, and includes updated information and external hyperlinks for all the genes. The functional gene interaction network for important biological processes and molecular functions has been rebuilt based on 374 genes using 'String 8.3'. The database is freely available at http://www.actrec.gov.in/OCDB/index.htm and provides the scientist information and external links for the genes involved in oral cancer, interactions between them, and their role in the biology of oral cancer along with clinical relevance.  相似文献

A backcross population, derived from the cross (S. tuberosumxS. spegazzinii)xS. tuberosum was used to map QTLs involved in nematode resistance, tuber yield and root development. Complete linkage maps were available for the interspecific hybrid parent as well as the S. tuberosum parent, and interval mapping for all traits was performed for both. Additionally, the intra- and inter-locus interactions of the QTLs were examined. The Gro1.2 locus, involved in resistance to G. rostochiensis pathotype Ro1, that was previously mapped in the S. tuberosumxS. spegazzinii F1 population, was located more precisely on chromosome 10. A new resistance locus, Gro1.4, also conferring resistance to G. rostochiensis pathotype Ro1, was found on chromosome 3. Different alleles of this locus originating from both parents contributed to the resistant phenotype, indicating multiallelism at this locus. No interlocus interactions were observed between these two resistance loci. For resistance to G. pallida no QTLs were detected. One minor QTL involved in tuber yield was located on chromosome 4. Two QTLs involved in root development and having large effects were mapped on chromosomes 2 and 6 and an epistatic interaction was found between these two loci.  相似文献

The Langmuir model fitted well the adsorption isotherms of lipase on the hydrophobic resin. The model parameters, Q m and k d, were affected by NaCl concentration: Q m increased from 31 to 80 U g–1 resin, and k d changed from 9.4 to 3 U ml–1. Column modelling and the simulation data were compared with the experimental data with good agreement. The highest achieved column efficiency was 71%.  相似文献

Maintenance of cell and tissue homeostasis is dependent upon the dynamic balance of cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis through interactions between cells and their microenvironment. The unique prostatic cellular phenotypes are induced and maintained by interaction between epithelium and adjacent stroma through intimate intercellular signaling pathways. In this article, we summarize current advances in the tumor-stroma interaction and its biologic and therapeutic implications. We specifically emphasize current studies of the possible factors driving the "vicious cycle" between stroma and emerging prostate tumor epithelial cells that may be responsible for carcinogenesis and metastasis to bone. Stroma responds both genotypically and phenotypically to tumor epithelium upon co-culture under 3-D conditions. Likewise, the emerging carcinoma responds to stromal signals that drive progression to malignancy. A vicious cycle mediated by soluble and insoluble molecules secreted by tumor cells and stroma appear be the critical factors supporting and sustaining tumor colonization in bone. Co-targeting tumor and stroma with therapeutic agents has yielded promising results both in pre-clinical models of prostate cancer and bony metastasis and in clinical trials of patients treated with a dual tumor and stroma targeting strategies. In conclusion, understanding and targeting the interaction of the tumor and its stromal microenvironmant may improve the prognosis, reduce the suffering and increase the survival of patients with advanced cancer metastasis.  相似文献

The interaction between predation and competition: a review and synthesis   总被引:6,自引:3,他引:6  
This review discusses the interface between two of the most important types of interactions between species, interspecific competition and predation. Predation has been claimed to increase, decrease, or have little effect on, the strength, impact or importance of interspecific competition. There is confusion about both the meaning of these terms and the likelihood of, and conditions required for, each of these outcomes. In this article we distinguish among three measures of the influence of predation on competitive outcomes: short‐term per capita consumption or growth rates, long‐term changes in density, and the probability of competitive coexistence. We then outline various theoretical mechanisms that can lead to qualitatively distinct effects of predators. The qualitative effect of predators can depend both on the mechanism of competition and on the definition of competitive strength/impact. In assessing the empirical literature, we ask: (1) What definitions of competitive strength/impact have been assumed? (2) Does strong evidence exist to support one or more of the possible mechanisms that can produce a given outcome? (3) Do biases in the choice of organism or manipulation exist, and are they likely to have influenced the conclusions reached? We conclude by discussing several unanswered questions, and espouse a stronger interchange between empirical and theoretical approaches to this important question.  相似文献

The pace and trajectory of coevolutionary arms races between parasites and their hosts are strongly influenced by the number of interacting species. In environments where a parasite has access to more than one host species, the parasite population may become divided in preference for a particular host. In the present study, we show that individual colonies of the pirate ant Polyergus breviceps differ in host preference during raiding, with each colony specializing on only one of two available Formica host species. Moreover, through genetic analyses, we show that the two hosts differ in their colony genetic structure. Formica occulta colonies were monogynous, whereas Formica  sp. cf. argentea colonies were polygynous and polydomous (colonies occupy multiple nest sites). This difference has important implications for coevolutionary dynamics in this system because raids against individual nests of polydomous colonies have less impact on overall host colony fitness than do attacks on intact colonies. We also used primers that we designed for four microsatellite loci isolated from P. breviceps to verify that colonies of this species, like other pirate ants, are comprised of simple families headed by one singly mated queen.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 565–572.  相似文献

The role of selenium exposure in preventing chronic disease is controversial, especially in selenium-repleted populations. At high concentrations, selenium exposure may increase oxidative stress. Studies evaluating the interaction of genetic variation in genes involved in oxidative stress pathways and selenium are scarce. We evaluated the cross-sectional association of plasma selenium concentrations with oxidative stress levels, measured as oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio (GSSG/GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxo-dG) in urine, and the interacting role of genetic variation in oxidative stress candidate genes, in a representative sample of 1445 men and women aged 18–85 years from Spain. The geometric mean of plasma selenium levels in the study sample was 84.76 µg/L. In fully adjusted models the geometric mean ratios for oxidative stress biomarker levels comparing the highest to the lowest quintiles of plasma selenium levels were 0.61 (0.50–0.76) for GSSG/GSH, 0.89 (0.79–1.00) for MDA, and 1.06 (0.96–1.18) for 8-oxo-dG. We observed nonlinear dose–responses of selenium exposure and oxidative stress biomarkers, with plasma selenium concentrations above ~110 μg/L being positively associated with 8-oxo-dG, but inversely associated with GSSG/GSH and MDA. In addition, we identified potential risk genotypes associated with increased levels of oxidative stress markers with high selenium levels. Our findings support that high selenium levels increase oxidative stress in some biological processes. More studies are needed to disentangle the complexity of selenium biology and the relevance of potential gene–selenium interactions in relation to health outcomes in human populations.  相似文献

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the unicellular parasite Plasmodium sp. Currently, the malaria parasite is becoming resistant to the traditional pharmacological alternatives, which are ineffective. Artemisinin is the most recent advance in the chemotherapy of malaria. Since it has been proven that artemisinin may act on intracellular heme, we have undertaken a systematic study of several interactions and arrangements between artemisinin and heme. Density Functional Theory calculations were employed to calculate interaction energies, electronic states, and geometrical arrangements for the complex between the heme group and artemisinin. The results show that the interaction between the heme group and artemisinin at long distances occurs through a complex where the iron atom of the heme group retains its electronic features, leading to a quintet state as the most stable one. However, for interaction at short distances, due to artemisinin reduction by the heme group, the most stable complex has a septet spin state. These results suggest that a thermodynamically favorable interaction between artemisinin and heme may happen.  相似文献

The emergence of a unified cognitive behaviour relies on the coordination of specialized components that distribute across a ‘brain’, body and environment. Although a general dynamical mechanism involved in agent-environment integration is still largely unknown for behavioural robustness, discussions here are focussed on one of the most plausible candidate: the formation of distributed mechanisms working in transient during agent-environment coupling. This article provides discussions on this sort of coordination based on a mobile object-tracking task with situated, embodied and minimal agents, and tests for robust yet adaptive behaviour. The proposed scenario provides examples of behavioural mechanisms that counterbalance the functional organization of internal control activity and agents’ situatedness to enable the evolution of a two-agent interaction task. Discussions in this article suggest that future studies of distributed cognition should take into account that there are at least two possible modes of interpreting distributed mechanisms and that these have a qualitatively different effect on behavioural robustness.  相似文献
