Antarctic fish of the suborder Notothenioidei represent one of the most notable examples of adaptive radiation in the marine environment. The evolutionary relationships between and within the eight families of this suborder have been well established by numerous studies, whereas the microevolutionary processes of notothenioid species remain largely unexplored. In the present paper we investigated the evolutionary relationships between three closely related species of the genus Chionodraco (family Channichthyidae), namely Chionodraco hamatus, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, and Chionodraco myersi by analysing portions of the mitochondrial genome (D-loop and 16S rRNA). The taxonomic status of C. hamatus and C. rastrospinosus as separate species has been questioned because of the limited number of key morphological characters that distinguish these two taxa. Our results, based on the analysis of several specimens belonging to both morphological groups revealed a small genetic differentiation among haplotypes, however, a clear separation between the two nominal species emerged since all individuals of each of the two taxa clustered together in distinct monophyletic groups. C. myersi appeared more distantly related in the phylogenetic analysis. For one species, C. hamatus, sampling was carried out at three different geographic locations in the area of the Ross Sea and Weddell Sea. The results showed that the partition of the genetic variation within this species is not compatible with the hypothesis of panmixia as gene flow between populations was significantly reduced.  相似文献

Feeding habits of early life stages of the channichthyid Chionodraco hamatus were investigated on samples collected in the western Ross Sea in early summer of 1996 and 2004. The stomach content analysis was carried out on larval and postlarval specimens ranging from 14 to 39 mm SL. Unlike larvae and juveniles of other channichthyids, which elsewhere largely rely on early life stages of Antarctic krill or ice krill, no euphausiids were found in the stomach contents of C. hamatus, except for a single large individual of Thysanoessa macrura. In both years, dietary composition consisted almost exclusively of notothenioid fish larvae. Early larvae of Pleuragramma antarcticum overwhelmingly dominated the diet in terms of abundance, biomass and frequency of occurrence, accounting for 98.4% of the index of relative importance (IRI). Other fish larvae consumed occasionally in small amount were Trematomus lepidorhinus, T. scotti and C. hamatus itself. As a result, the feeding strategy of C. hamatus was considerably shifted toward specialization, relying on relatively few taxa of prey, each of them showing a high prey-specific abundance. Comparing both dietary composition and feeding strategy of C. hamatus in the two different sampling years, several differences were observed, probably due to different environmental conditions, mainly linked to a significant delay of ice retreat and formation of the Ross Sea polynya verified in the 2003–2004 summer season.  相似文献

Lymphomyeloid organs of two common species of Antarctic fish, Trematomus nicolai and Chionodraco hamatus, were studied with the aim of analysing some morphological aspects of these organs in relation to adaptation to low environmental temperature. The thymuses of T. nicolai and C. hamatus were flattened, incompletely lobated, with numerous Hassall-like bodies, which were mainly located in the central part of the organ in C. hamatus. In T. nicolai, thymocytes, erythroid and reticular epithelial cells filled the organ. In C. hamatus, the thymocytes intermingled with reticular epithelial cells were often close to groups of melano-macrophages. In both species, the thymus did not show distinct compartmentalisation; however, the thymocytes had significantly different sizes in the outer and inner portions of the thymus. The head kidney of both species was completely filled by haematopoietic tissue, highly vascularised and mainly lymphopoietic in T. nicolai, while both erythropoietic and lymphopoietic in C. hamatus. The spleen appeared mainly erythropoietic in T. nicolai and mainly lymphopoietic in C. hamatus. Solitary melano-macrophages in T. nicolai were close to numerous small vascular ellipsoids where erythroid and lymphoid cells were intermingled without the formation of red and white pulp areas. In C. hamatus, large lymphoid areas were organised around the capillaries. The possible adaptation of lymphoid organs to the low temperature of polar water is discussed. Metal bioaccumulation and metallothionein were investigated in different organs of the red-blooded teleost, Trematomus bernacchii and the haemoglobinless Chionodraco hamatus. Specimens of the two Antarctic fish were sampled from Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea), and their levels of Cd, Cu and Zn in homogenates and in soluble fractions of liver, muscle, gills, heart and plasma were determined. Dosages of metallothioneins (MTs) or MT-like proteins were assayed by the silver saturation method in soluble fractions of the same organs. In both T. bernacchii and C. hamatus the highest MT contents were found in liver. Hepatic MT and Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations correlated positively in T. bernacchii, whereas in C. hamatus hepatic MT showed a positive correlation only with Cd. Positive correlations were also found between Cd and MT in gills of the two species. A metal-binding protein containing a high percentage of cysteine from C. hamatus was purified and compared with the MT from T. bernacchii and mammals. Accepted: 27 November 1999  相似文献

We characterized eight polymorphic microsatellites in the icefish Chionodraco rastrospinosus (Perciformes, Notothenioidea, Channichthyidae). Microsatellites were isolated from a partial genomic library enriched for an AC motif. Chionodraco rastrospinosus is an endemic species inhabiting southern ocean waters surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands, and the South Orkney Islands. An excess of homozygotes was observed in seven out of the eight investigated loci; however, presence of null alleles was detected only for three of them suggesting that other factors may act in reducing heterozygosity. These molecular markers will be useful to investigate icefish genetic structure, possibly providing insights on its effective population size and demographic history.  相似文献

Testis structure and spermatogenetic activity were studied in two Antarctic teleostean species, Chionodraco hamatus and Trematomus bernacchii, captured during the austral summer in the Ross Sea. The specimens of C. hamatus showed full reproductive activity but, the spermatogenetic cycle being over, only spermatogonia and Sertoli cells were present in the seminiferous tubules whereas the lumina were full of sperm. By contrast, the specimens of T. bernacchii were in the stage of spermatogenetical recrudescence, having not yet entered the reproductive period. In this species, the seminiferous tubules were devoid of lumen and full of spermatogonial cysts, showing some mitoses. Many tubules contained cysts of meiotic spermatocytes I and, in one case only, small cysts of spermatocytes II. The final stages of spermatogenesis were lacking, presumably occurring later, in autumn/winter. The immunocytochemical tests aimed at identifying bFGF and FGFR1 revealed a positive reaction both in Sertoli cells and spermatogonia in the C. hamatus specimens, indicating that this species was ready to start a new spermatogenetic cycle. The weak reaction in the specimens of T. bernacchii suggests that, in this species, the stage of cell division was over and that of meiosis and differentiation was starting. These data indicate that Antarctic fish have an opportunistic spermatogenetic cycle. Accepted: 24 October 1999  相似文献

Summary Some features of gametogenesis and sexual cycles of three species of the genus Trematomus (fam. Nototheniidae)-Trematomus centronotus Regan, T. eulepidotus Regan and T. scotti (Boulenger) and three species of icefishes (fam. Channichthyidae)-Chionodraco hamatus (Lönnberg), Ch. myersi Tyler and Neopagetopsis ionah Nybelin-were studied at Davis and Mawson Seas during austral autumn (March–April), 1983. Two peculiarities of the sexual cycles of Trematomus species may be noted: the uniform state of gonads of mature specimens of each species, and differences in time of spawning (austral summer and autumn for T. centronotus and T. eulepidotus, and, evidently, beginning of spring or the end of winter for T. scotti). Among the features of gametogenesis of icefishes are the early accumulation of yolk in oocytes, and the beginning of polarization and homogenization of yolk in oocytes, which are far from definitive sizes. Some differences in spawning time were registered in first maturing and repeatedly maturing specimens of Ch. hamatus. Repeatedly maturing specimens probably begin to spawn in December–January; those maturing for the first time evidently still spawn in March–April. Ch. myersi and N. ionah, judging by singular mature specimens, supposedly spawn during austral autumn.  相似文献

Aim A lack of genetic structure is predicted for Antarctic fish due to the duration of pelagic larval stages and the strength of the currents in the Southern Ocean, particularly the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. In this study we explored the population structure of the ocellated icefish, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, by means of analysing a total of 394 individuals collected at four geographical areas off the Antarctic Peninsula in the period 1996–2006. Location Elephant Island, southern South Shetlands, Joinville Island and South Orkneys in the Southern Ocean. Methods The spatio‐temporal genetic structure of Chionodraco rastrospinosus was explored using seven microsatellite loci. Existence and direction of gene flow across sampling locations were investigated using the isolation‐by‐migration procedure. Results Microsatellite data showed a lack of genetic structuring in the area studied, with no differences found at both the geographical or temporal level, and an eastward unidirectional gene flow among sites. This suggested a lack of genetic barriers for this species, attributable to larval dispersal following the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, which fits well with the predicted pattern for Antarctic fish. Re‐examination of genetic data of the closely related icefish Chaenocephalus aceratus, with similar larval duration but displaying genetically structured populations, indicated a weak but significant bidirectional gene flow. Main conclusions Our results point to a relationship that is more complex than expected between potential for dispersal and realized gene flow in the marine environment. In addition to ocean circulation and larval dispersal, other major life‐history traits might be driving connectivity, particularly larval retention.  相似文献

Somatostatin 14, prolactin, atrial natriuretic peptide, galanin and urotensin II were found using immunohistochemistry in the urinary bladders of the Antarctic fishes Trematomus bernacchii (Nototheniidae) and Chionodraco hamatus (Channichthyidae) caught in the Ross Sea. The urinary bladders of the two species showed a different histology in the epithelial layer. In T. bernacchii the epithelium comprises a single type of columnar cells, while in C. hamatus the columnar cells are restricted to the ventral portion of the bladder, and the dorso-lateral region is lined by cuboidal cells. No difference in the intensity of the immunostaining was observed in the two cell types; the only variation was a different distribution of the immunoreactions, which were present in the whole cytoplasm in the cuboidal cells and restricted to the apical and/or basal portion of the columnar cells. We studied the genome of an antarctic ice fish, Chionodraco hamatus, in order to detect highly repetitive DNAs that may play a role in heterochromatinization processes and sex chromosome differentiation. We used two different experimental approaches. Hybridization of a Bkm probe to genomic DNA showed slight differences between the two sexes. Using restriction enzymes, a Bgl II satellite (pIF) was isolated. In situ hybridization revealed a preferential localization of pIF on the centromeres and the telomeres of most chromosomes, as well as an interstitial band on the long arms of the neo-Y sex chromosome, where probably the hypothetical fusion took place. Dot-blot experiments showed that pIF is still present in species belonging to different families of the same suborder. Though preliminary, our results suggest a conservative nature of this DNA which might have played a definite functional role in the genome of these polar fishes.  相似文献

Comparative chromosomal mapping of major and 5S ribosomal genes in six species of the family Channichthyidae, namely Champsocephalus gunnari, Channichthys rhinoceratus, Chionodraco hamatus, Cryodraco atkinsoni, Pagetopsis macropterus and Neopagetopsis ionah, was performed by fluorescence in-situ hybridization, and using 28S and 5S ribosomal gene (rDNA) sequences as probes. Clusters of major and 5S ribosomal genes co-localize and likely compose the entire arm of a single pair of submetacentric chromosomes in all the species. In one species, P. macropterus, a second pair of chromosomes bears an additional common locus for both the two families of ribosomal genes. In all species, except N. ionah, additional copies of 5S rDNA sequences are also present on two other chromosome pairs, including the Y-chromosome in the males of Chionodraco hamatus. The pattern of ribosomal DNAs contributes to species-specific characterization in this fish family, and to our general knowledge and understanding of the chromosomal organization and evolution of the icefish genome.  相似文献

The food of some Aantarctic fish in the western Ross Sea in summer 1979   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The food of fish in the western area of the Ross Sea was studied. Four locations were sampled using a bottom trawl. Twenty-four species of fish belonging to six families were caught. Pleuragramma antarcticum was the most important species among them and Chionodraco myersi was also abundant. The food chain, starting from small crustaceans such as Parathemisto gaudichaudii, copepods and Euphausia crystallorophias and extending through P. antarcticum to channichthyids is considered the most important chain in the food web of the fish community of the western Ross Sea in summer. The significance of the ecological role of P. antarcticum in the food web of the fish community of this area where the krill, Euphausia superba, is scarce is discussed.  相似文献

We have investigated the immunoglobulin molecule and the genes encoding it in teleosts living in the Antarctic seas at the constant temperature of −1.86 °C. The majority of Antarctic teleosts belong to the suborder Notothenioidei (Perciformes), which includes only a few non-Antarctic species. Twenty-one Antarctic and two non-Antarctic Notothenioid species were included in our studies. We sequenced immunoglobulin light chains in two species and μ heavy chains, partially or totally, in twenty species. In the case of heavy chain, genomic DNA and the cDNA encoding the secreted and the membrane form were analyzed. From one species, Trematomus bernacchii, a spleen cDNA library was constructed to evaluate the diversity of VH gene segments. T. bernacchii IgM, purified from the serum and bile, was characterized. Homology Modelling and Molecular Dynamics were used to determine the molecular structure of T. bernacchii and Chionodraco hamatus immunoglobulin domains. This paper sums up the previous results and broadens them with the addition of unpublished data.  相似文献

Growth and age validation in high-Antarctic fish   总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
The growth of three demersal species dominant in biomass and abundance in the Weddell Sea, Chionodraco myersi (channichthyid), Trematomus eulepidotus (nototheniid) and Dolloidraco longedorsalis (artedidraconid), was studied on specimens caught in summer. Ages were determined using ground and polished otolith sections and an image analysis system to measure the otolith radius and distances of each growth increment to the otolith core. Ageing precision and accuracy have been estimated. Indirect validation methods, based on the increment growth pattern, were applied to support the annual periodicity of the increments. Due to the lack of some age classes, back-calculated age-length keys were determined and used to fit the von Bertalanffy growth parameters by sex and species. The determined values showed sexual dimorphism, with females having faster growth rates, except in D. longedorsalis. The growth performance index was between 1 and 2, as in other high-Antarctic fish. For T. eulepidotus, age and growth data were available, but this is the first report for C. myersi and D. longedorsalis. Moreover, this is the first time that accuracy and precision have been estimated for high-Antarctic fish age determination. Accepted: 20 March 2000  相似文献

Allozyme variation was examined inCarex sect.Phyllostachys (Cyperaceae) to provide insight into phylogenetic relationships hypothesized in an earlier study and to determine the degree of genetic differentiation within and between taxa. Genetic identity values are concordant with the morphological differences found between species. The lowest values are found between species with the greatest morphological dissimilarity. Conversely, the highest values are associated with species pairs distinguished by relatively few morphological differences. Conspecific populations possess high genetic identities, although interpopulation differentiation has characterized the evolutionary history of some species. Geographic patterning is also evident within species, with geographically proximate populations often having the highest identity values. Phylogenetic trees produced using different cladistic methods were poorly supported and varied in their depiction of relationships among species. One cladogram produced using presence/absence allelic data is more or less congruent with a topology recovered from an earlier analysis utilizing molecular and morphological data. The wide- and narrow-scaled clades are maintained as are the sister species pairsC. backii/C. saximontana, C. basiantha/C. superata, andC. jamesii/C. juniperorum. Contrary to the finding of our previous study, however,C. willdenowii is aligned withC. jamesii/C. juniperorum.  相似文献

The white-blooded Antarctic icefish is the only known vertebrate lacking oxygen-transporting haemoglobins. Fish skin mucus, as the first line of defence against pathogens, can reflect fish welfare. In this study, we analysed the skin mucus proteome profiles of the two Antarctic fish species, the white-blooded Antarctic icefish, Chionodraco hamatus, and the red-blooded Antarctic fish, Notothenia coriiceps, unfolding the different proteins by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) technology. Of the 4444 totally identified proteins, 227 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were found in the comparison between C. hamatus and N. coriiceps, of which 121 were upregulated and 106 were downregulated in the icefish. In the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway annotation, we found two pathways “Legionellosis” and “Complement and coagulation cascades” were significantly enriched, among of which innate immune candidate proteins such as C3, CASP1, ASC, F3 and C9 were significantly upregulated, suggesting their important roles in C. hamatus immune system. Additionally, the DEP protein–protein interaction network analysis and “Response to stress” GO category provided candidate biomarkers for deep understanding of the distinct immune response of the two Antarctic fish underlying the cold adaptation.  相似文献

Age and growth of ocellated icefish, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, were investigated using counts of annual growth increments from sagittal otoliths. Samples were collected during research surveys by benthic trawl carried out around Elephant and South Shetland Islands in January–February 2002 and December 2006–January 2007. A total of 290 specimens were selected for the study, consisting of 120 females and 170 males. The age of fish was estimated by counting annuli on transverse sections obtained by grinding and polishing whole otoliths embedded in epoxy resin. The precision-of-age estimates within and between readers were tested applying both the average percent error (APE) and the coefficient of variation (CV). The estimated age-range was 1–12 for both sexes of C. rastrospinosus. Applying the von Bertalanffy growth function to the age–length data, a growth curve was obtained for each sex. The estimated values of VB growth parameters L and k were, respectively, 47.9 cm and 0.28 for females and 42.9 cm and 0.36 for males. Compared to other congeneric species, the growth performance of C. rastrospinosus was relatively high, being 2.82 and 2.81 in males and females, respectively. Age at sexual maturity was estimated to be about 4 years in both sexes. C. rastrospinosus captured in the studied area consisted mainly of adult specimens between 3 and 8 years, with few older fish.  相似文献

Sponges are among the most species‐rich and ecologically important taxa on coral reefs, yet documenting their diversity is difficult due to the simplicity and plasticity of their morphological characters. Genetic attempts to identify species are hampered by the slow rate of mitochondrial sequence evolution characteristic of sponges and some other basal metazoans. Here we determine species boundaries of the Caribbean coral reef sponge genus Callyspongia using a multilocus, model‐based approach. Based on sequence data from one mitochondrial (COI), one ribosomal (28S), and two single‐copy nuclear protein‐coding genes, we found evolutionarily distinct lineages were not concordant with current species designations in Callyspongia. While C. fallax, C. tenerrima, and C. plicifera were reciprocally monophyletic, four taxa with different morphologies (C. armigera, C. longissima, C. eschrichtii, and C. vaginalis) formed a monophyletic group and genetic distances among these taxa overlapped distances within them. A model‐based method of species delimitation supported collapsing these four into a single evolutionary lineage. Variation in spicule size among these four taxa was partitioned geographically, not by current species designations, indicating that in Callyspongia, these key taxonomic characters are poor indicators of genetic differentiation. Taken together, our results suggest a complex relationship between morphology and species boundaries in sponges.  相似文献

Mitochondria-rich cells in Antarctic fish gills   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
We used transmission and scanning electron microscopy and an antibody to the inner mitochondrial membrane to study the presence and localisation of mitochondria-rich cells in the gills of two Antarctic fishes, Chionodraco hamatus (Channichthyidae) and Trematomus bernacchii (Nototheniidae). The general morphology of the gills in the two species was slightly different: in T. bernacchii the filament and secondary lamellae were short and thicker, and mitochondria-rich cells were less numerous than in C. hamatus. In the two species the mitochondria-rich cells, distributed in the secondary and primary epithelium, were of the same morphological type, similar to the α-chloride cells of temperate seawater teleosts. The study was carried out to compare the mitochondria-rich cells of Antarctic fishes to the chloride cells of temperate marine teleosts. Immunolocalisation, using a specific antibody to the α-subunit of Na+/K+-ATPase, was observed in numerous epithelial cells in the interlamellar epithelium and on the secondary lamellae, suggesting an active sodium chloride secretion. Summary The aim of this study was to investigate the detoxicant Mixed Function Oxidase system in two species of Antarctic fish, C. hamatus and P. bernacchii, collected during the Antarctic summer of 1989–1990 at the Italian Scientific Station at Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea). Several specimens were induced by injection of phenobarbital (PB), 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) and PCBs in the caudal vein. The results show significant differences between the two species. In C. hamatus, basal activity of benzo(a)pyrene monooxygenase (BPMO) was among the lowest measured even in fish of temperate seas, and in P. bernacchii it was 20 times lower. The values of regenerating activities (NADPH-cytochrome c reductase (NADPH-CYTCRED), NADH-cytochrome c reductase (NADH-CYTCRED) and NADH-ferricyanide reductase (NADH-FERRIRED) suggest that the two species use different electron donor molecules. Injection of chemicals in the caudal vein did not provoke induction of MFO activity in P. bernacchii. In C. hamatus, phenobarbital and PB-type inducers did not cause induction but there was a statistically significant response to 3-MC.  相似文献
