Morphological and functional characteristics of Plantago media L. leaves were compared for plants growing at different light regimes on limestone outcrops in Southern Timan (62°45′N, 55°49′E). The plants grown in open areas under exposure to full sunlight had small leaves with low pigment content and high specific leaf weight; these leaves exhibited high photosynthetic capacity and elevated water use efficiency at high irradiance. The maximum photochemical activity of photosystem II (F v/F m) in leaves of sun plants remained at the level of about 0.8 throughout the day. The photosynthetic apparatus of sun plants was resistant to excess photosynthetically active radiation, mostly due to non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (qN). This quenching was promoted by elevated deepoxiation of violaxanthin cycle pigments. Accumulation of zeaxanthin, a photoprotective pigment in sun plant leaves was observed already in the morning hours. The plant leaves grown in the shade of dense herbage were significantly larger than the sun leaves, with pigment content 1.5–2.0 times greater than in sun leaves; these leaves had low qN values and did not need extensive deepoxidation of violaxanthin cycle pigments. The data reveal the morphophysiological plasticity of plantain plants in relation to lighting regime. Environmental conditions can facilitate the formation of the ecotype with photosynthetic apparatus resistant to photoinhibition. Owing to this adjustment, hoary plantain plants are capable of surviving in ecotopes with high insolation.  相似文献

Comparative study was performed to assess the content and proportions of photosynthetic pigments and the violaxanthin cycle (VXC) activity in winter-green and summer-green leaves of bugleweed (Ajuga reptans L.) plants grown in shaded (photosynthetically active radiation, PAR 150 μmol/(m2 s)) and sunny (PAR 1200 μmol/(m2 s)) habitats in the Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland). In overwintered and newly formed leaves of shade plants, the content of green and yellow pigments was two times higher than in leaves of sun plants. The shade plants were distinguished by accumulation of β-carotene, while lutein was predominant in leaves of sun plants. Under the action of strong light (2000 μmol/(m2s)), the level of violaxanthin deepoxidation in winter-green leaves of shade and sun plants increased five- to sixfold, whereas it changed insignificantly in summer-green leaves of shade plants. It is concluded that, in a shadetolerant species A. reptans, the photosynthetic apparatus of winter-green leaves in sun and shade plants and of summer-green leaves in sun plants is protected against excess insolation by high activity of VXC. The carotenoids of summer-green leaves in shade plants are supposed to function mainly as light-harvesting pigments.  相似文献

The influence of photosynthetic activity on the light-dependent adaptation of the pool size of the violaxanthin cycle pigments (violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin) was studied in leaves of wild-type and transgenic potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants. The genetically manipulated plants expressed an antisense mRNA coding for the chloroplastic fructose-bisphosphatase. Chl fluorescence quenching analysis revealed that the transformed plants exhibited a greatly impaired electron transport capacity. Light-limited and light-saturated non-photochemical quenching was strongly enhanced in the mRNA antisense potato plants. After 7 d of adaptation at various high photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs), the violaxanthin cycle pool size increased, with a progressive elevation in PPFD. The pool size was higher for transgenic potatoes than for wild-type plants at all PPFDs. This difference vanished when pool size was correlated with the PPFD in excess of photosynthesis, as indicated by the epoxidation state of the violaxanthin cycle. Contrasting results were obtained for tobacco; in this species, photosynthetic activity did not affect the pool size. We conclude that regulatory mechanisms exist in potato, by which photosynthetic activity can influence the violaxanthin cycle pool size. Furthermore, evidence is provided that this adaptation of the pool size may contribute to an improved photoprotection of the photosynthetic apparatus under high-light conditions. However, tobacco plants seem to regulate their pool size independently of photosynthetic activity.  相似文献

Mechanisms of adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus at the level of pigment complex in a shade-tolerant bugle plant (Ajuga reptans L.) grown at full solar irradiation in an open plot were studied. In “sun” plants, the content of photosynthetic pigments decreased markedly as compared to “shade” plants grown under a forest canopy at 5–10% of the full solar irradiation. In leaves of sun plants, the portion of β-carotene and lutein in the carotenoid spectrum was higher than in shade plant leaves, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin were present, and de-epoxidation of violaxanthin was by an order of magnitude higher in sun plant leaves reaching 40%. The data obtained indicate the role of the violaxanthin cycle in the protection of photosynthetic apparatus in a shade-tolerant plant against destruction under excessive irradiation.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in pigment composition of sun and shade leavesof cork oak (Quercus suber) were studied under field conditionsin Portugal. Expanding leaves showed a high concentration ofxanthophyll cycle components, violaxanthin, antheraxanthin andzeaxanthin. The pool of violaxanthin plus antheraxanthin pluszeaxanthin (V+A+Z) varied greatly between the seasons, beinghigher at the end of summer and in winter when photosynthesiswas limited by water stress and cold, respectively. The sizeof V+A+Z pool was associated to synthesis of zeaxanthin in responseto an excess of light. In sun leaves, midday A+Z relative contentwas positively correlated with the V+A+Z pool, whereas in shadeleaves A+Z decreased with leaf ageing. In both leaf types A+Zwas positively correlated with the non-photochemical quenching(NPQ) of chlorophyll a fluorescence. However, in winter NPQdid not change significantly throughout the day, whereas the(A+Z)/(V+A+Z) increased following the typical daily trend observedin other seasons. The relationships between photosynthetic efficiency, non-radiative energy dissipation and carotenoid composition were studied in leaves ofLigustrum ovalifolium developed either under full sunlight or in the shade. Sun leaves contained a much greater pool of xanthophyll cycle components than shade leaves. The rate of non-radiative energy dissipation, measured as non-photochemical fluorescence quenching (NPQ), was strictly related to the deepoxidation state (DPS) of xanthophyll cycle components in both sun and shade leaves, indicating that zeaxanthin (Z) and antheraxanthin (A) are involved in the development of NPQ. Under extreme conditions of excessive energy, sun leaves showed higher maximum DPS than shade leaves. Therefore, sun leaves contained not only a greater pool of xanthophyll cycle components but also a higher proportion of violaxanthin (V) actually photoconvertible to A and Z, compared to shade leaves. Both these effects contributed to the higher NPQ in sun versus shade leaves. The amount of photoconvertible V was strongly related to chla/b ratio and inversely to leaf neoxanthin content. This evidence indicates that the amount of photoconvertible V may be dependent on the degree of thylakoid membrane appression and on the organization of chlorophyll-protein complexes, and possible explanations are discussed. Exposure to chilling temperatures caused a strong decline in the photon yield of photosynthesis and in the intrinsic efficiency of PS II photochemistry in sun leaves, but little effects in shade leaves. These effects were accompanied by increases in the pool of xanthophyll cycle components and in DPS, more pronounced in sun than in shade leaves. This corroborates the view that Z and A may play a photoprotective role under unfavorable conditions. In addition to the xanthophyll-related non-radiative energy dissipation, a slow relaxing component of NPQ, independent from A and Z concentrations, has been found in leaves exposed to low temperature and high light. This quenching component may be attributed either to other regulatory mechanism of PS II efficiency or to photoinactivation.Research supported by National Research Council of Italy, Special Project RAISA, Sub-Project 2, Paper N. 1587.  相似文献

The relationships between non‐radiative energy dissipation and the carotenoid content, especially the xanthophyll cycle components, were studied in sun and shade leaves of several plants possessing C3 ( Hedera helix and Laurus nobilis ) or C4 ( Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor ) photosynthetic pathways. Sun‐shade acclimation caused marked changes in the organisation and function of photosynthetic apparatus, including significant variation in carotenoid content and composition. The contents of zanthophyll cycle pigments were higher in sun than in shade leaves in all species, but this difference was considerably greater in C3 than in C4 plants. The proportion of photoconvertible violaxanthin, that is the amount of violaxanthin (V) which can actually be de‐epoxidised to zeaxanthin, was much greater in sun than in shade leaves. The amount of photoconvertible V was always linearly dependent on the chlorophyll a/b ratio, although the slope of the relationship varied especially between C3 and C4 species. The leaf zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin contents were correlated with non‐radiative energy dissipation in all species under different light environments. These relationships were curvilinear and variable between sun and shade leaves and between C3 and C4 species. Hence, the dissipation of excess energy does not appear to be univocally dependent on zeaxanthin content and other photoprotective mechanisms may be involved under high irradiance stress. Such mechanisms appear largely variable between C3 and C4 species according to their photosynthetic characteristics.  相似文献

Dynamics and possible function of the lutein epoxide (Lx) cycle, that is, the reversible conversion of Lx to lutein (L) in the light-harvesting antennae, were investigated in leaves of tropical tree species. Photosynthetic pigments were quantified in nine Inga species and species from three other genera. In Inga , Lx levels were high in shade leaves (mostly above 20 mmol mol−1 chlorophyll) and low in sun leaves. In Virola surinamensis , both sun and shade leaves exhibited very high Lx contents (about 60 mmol mol−1 chlorophyll). In Inga marginata grown under high irradiance, Lx slowly accumulated within several days upon transfer to deep shade. When shade leaves of I. marginata were briefly exposed to the sunlight, both violaxanthin and Lx were quickly de-epoxidized. Subsequently, overnight recovery occurred only for violaxanthin, not for Lx. In such leaves, containing reduced levels of Lx and increased levels of L, chlorophyll fluorescence induction showed significantly slower reduction of the photosystem II electron acceptor, Q A, and faster formation as well as a higher level of non-photochemical quenching. The results indicate that slow Lx accumulation in Inga leaves may improve light harvesting under limiting light, while quick de-epoxidation of Lx to L in response to excess light may enhance photoprotection.  相似文献

Diurnal cycle of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters was done in Colocasia esculenta L. (swamp taro) grown in marshy land under sun or under shade. The sun leaves maintained higher electron transport rate (ETR) and steady state to initial fluorescence ratio (Fs/F0) than shade leaves. In spite of lower ETR, higher photochemical quenching (PQ), and effective quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2) was evident in shade plants compared to plants exposed to higher irradiance. ETR increased linearly with increase in irradiance more under low irradiance (r 2 = 0.84) compared to higher irradiance (r 2 = 0.62). The maximum quantum yield of PS 2 (Fv/Fm) did not differ much in sun and shade leaves with the exception of midday when excess of light energy absorbed by plants under sun was thermally dissipated. Hence swamp taro plants adopted different strategies to utilize radiation under different irradiances. At higher irradiance, there was faster decline in proportion of open PS 2 centers (PQ) and excess light energy was dissipated through non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Under shade, absorbed energy was effectively utilized resulting in higher ΦPS2.  相似文献

The carotenoid composition of sun leaves of nine species of annual crop plants (some with several varieties) was compared with sun and shade leaves of several other groups of plants, among those sun and shade leaves of several species of perennial shrubs and vines and deep-shade leaves of seven rainforest species. All sun leaves contained considerably greater amounts of the components of the xanthophyll cycle violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin as well as of β-carotene than the shade leaves, as had previously been reported for a variety of other species by Thayer & Björkman (Photosynthesis Research, 1990, 23, 331–343). Therefore, high light specifically stimulated β,β-carotenoid synthesis. The sun leaves of these crop species did not contain α-carotene which was, however, present in large amounts in all shade leaves and in smaller amounts in sun leaves of three of the four species of perennial shrubs and vines. There was no difference in neoxanthin content on a chlorophyll basis between sun and shade leaves, and there was no consistent general difference in the lutein content between all sun and all shade leaves. The zeaxanthin (and antheraxanthin) content at peak irradiance and the xanthophyll cycle pool size were compared for sun leaves from the different groups of plants with different life forms and different metabolic activities. When growing in full sunlight the annual crop species and a perennial mesophyte had high rates of photosynthesis whereas the perennial shrubs and vines had relatively low photosynthesis rates. More zeaxanthin (and antheraxanthin) were accumulated at noon in full sunlight in those species with the lower photosynthesis rates. However, it was not such that those species also possessed the larger pools of violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin. Instead, the xanthophyll cycle pools of sun leaves of the annual crop species and the perennial mesophyte were not smaller, and were even possibly larger, than those of sun leaves of the perennial shrubs and vines with low photosynthesis rates. This was so in spite of the fact that the crop species experienced much lesser degrees of excessive light at full sun than the shrubs and vines. Thus, many of the crop species converted only about 30–50% of their xanthophyll cycle pool to zeaxanthin at noon, whereas the shrubs and vines typically converted more than 80% of their pool into zeaxanthin. The crop species also had larger pools of β-carotene than the shrubs and vines but smaller pools of lutein than the majority of the latter species.  相似文献

The photosynthetic characteristics ofCycas micronesica K.D. Hill were studied from August 1998 until February 1999 using chlorophyll fluorescence and gas-exchange techniques to determine the responses to long-term shade of 35% ambient light transmission, followed by the transfer of shade-grown leaves into full-sun conditions. The shade-grown leaves exhibited increased photosynthetic light use efficiency and effective quantum efficiency of photosystem II (PS II) and decreased photosynthetic light saturation point and dark respiration when compared with leaves grown in full sun. Shade was removed from shade-grownC. micronesica leaves during midday on December 14, 1998, when effective quantum efficiency of shaded leaves was 45% greater than that of sun leaves. Following one hour in full sun, effective quantum efficiency of the shade-grown leaves declined to below that of the sun-grown leaves. After receiving full sunlight for the rest of the photoperiod, maximum quantum efficiency of PS II photochemistry for shade-grown leaves was below that of sun-grown leaves throughout the night. The damage caused by excessive light to shade-grown leaves progressed for the first three days after shade removal. On day 3, effective quantum efficiency during midday was 30%, net photosynthesis was 47%, apparent quantum yield was 65%, and light compensation point was 136% of that for sun-grown leaves. After day 3, the relationship between full-sun leaves and the previously shaded leaves for these response variables was relatively stable. Two months following removal of shade, the previously shaded leaves continued to exhibit damage from high light. These results have application to transplanting cycad plants from a shaded nursery to a field site or, after tropical cyclones, where protective forest canopy cover has been destroyed and cycad plants in the forest subcanopy are abruptly exposed to full-sun conditions.

Thirty days old rice plants grown under low and moderate light conditions were transferred to full sunlight to observe the extent of photoinhibitory damage and protective mechanism, and the relationship between xanthophyll cycle and nonphotochemical quenching (qN) under changing light environment. Control plants (low, moderate and sun grown) exhibited similar Fv/Fm ratio, indicating similar photosynthetic efficiency prior to light stress. On exposure to the high light treatment, low light grown plants exhibited faster and higher degree of photoinhibition compared to moderate and high light grown plants. Moderate and high light grown plants showed relatively less photoinhibition and also showed higher qN, indicating better capacity of energy dissipation. Increase in qN in moderate light and sun grown plants was accompanied by conversion of violaxanthin (V) to antheraxanthin (A) and zeaxanthin (Z) indicating operation of Z-dependent thermal dissipation. Rice plants fed with ascorbate (AsA), a stimulator of the de-epoxidation state of V to Z, showed higher Fv/Fm ratio and qN than the plants fed with dithiothreitol (DTT) an inhibitor of xanthophyll cycle. This indicated that an increased amount of energy reached PS II reaction centre, due to absence of A and Z formation, thereby causing greater damage to photosynthesis in DTT fed rice plants. The present data confirmed the relationship between qN and Z in dissipating the excess light energy, thereby protecting plants against photodamage.  相似文献

Photosynthesis, photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry, photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle in the senescent flag leaves of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants grown in the field were investigated. Compared to the non-senescent leaves, photosynthetic capacity was significantly reduced in senescent flag leaves. The light intensity at which photosynthesis was saturated also declined significantly. The light response curves of PSII photochemistry indicate that a down-regulation of PSII photochemistry occurred in senescent leaves in particular at high light. The maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry in senescent flag leaves decreased slightly when measured at predawn but substantially at midday, suggesting that PSII function was largely maintained and photoinhibition occurred in senescent leaves when exposed to high light. At midday, PSII efficiency, photochemical quenching and the efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII centers decreased considerably, while non-photochemical quenching increased significantly. Moreover, compared with the values at early morning, a greater decrease in CO2 assimilation rate was observed at midday in senescent leaves than in control leaves. The levels of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin via the de-epoxidation of violaxanthin increased in senescent flag leaves from predawn to midday. An increase in the xanthophyll cycle pigments relative to chlorophyll was observed in senescent flag leaves. The results suggest that the xanthophyll cycle was activated in senescent leaves due to the decrease in CO2 assimilation capacity and the light intensity for saturation of photosynthesis and that the enhanced formation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin at high light may play an important role in the dissipation of excess light energy and help to protect photosynthetic apparatus from photodamage. Our results suggest that the well-known function of the xanthophyll cycle to safely dissipate excess excitation energy is also important for maintaining photosynthetic function during leaf senescence.  相似文献

The photochemical reflectance index (PRI), derived from narrow-band reflectance at 531 and 570 nm, was explored as an indicator of photosynthetic radiation use efficiency for 20 species representing three functional types: annual, deciduous perennial, and evergreen perennial. Across species, top-canopy leaves in full sun at midday exhibited a strong correlation between PRI and ΔF/Fm′, a fluorescence-based index of photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency. PRI was also significantly correlated with both net CO2 uptake and radiation use efficiency measured by gas exchange. When species were examined by functional type, evergreens exhibited significantly reduced midday photosynthetic rates relative to annual and deciduous species. This midday reduction was associated with reduced radiation use efficiency, detectable as reduced net CO2 uptake, PRI, and ΔF/Fm′ values, and increased levels of the photoprotective xanthophyll cycle pigment zeaxanthin. For each functional type, nutrient deficiency led to reductions in both PRI and ΔF/Fm′ relative to fertilized controls. Laboratory experiments exposing leaves to diurnal courses of radiation and simulated midday stomatal closure demonstrated that PRI changed rapidly with both irradiance and leaf physiological state. In these studies, PRI was closely correlated with both ΔF/Fm' and radiation use efficiency determined from gas exchange at all but the lowest light levels. Examination of the difference spectra upon exposure to increasing light levels revealed that the 531 nm Δ reflectance signal was composed of two spectral components. At low irradiance, this signal was dominated by a 545-nm component, which was not closely related to radiation use efficiency. At progressively higher light levels above 100 μmol m−2 s−1, the 531-nm signal was increasingly dominated by a 526-nm component, which was correlated with light use efficiency and with the conversion of the xanthophyll pigment violaxanthin to antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin. Further consideration of the two components composing the 531-nm signal could lead to an index of photosynthetic function applicable over a wide range of illumination. The results of this study support the use of PRI as an interspecific index of photosynthetic radiation use efficiency for leaves and canopies in full sun, but not across wide ranges in illumination from deep shade to full sun. The discovery of a consistent relationship between PRI and photosynthetic radiation use efficiency for top-canopy leaves across species, functional types, and nutrient treatments suggests that relative photosynthetic rates could be derived with the “view from above” provided by remote reflectance measurements if issues of canopy and stand structure can be resolved. The state of the pigment apparatus and potential photosynthesis (PP) was compared in the leaves of plants falling into two ecological groups, ephemeroids (three species) and summer plants (two species). For the first time, the organization of the plastid pigment apparatus was investigated in ephemeroids using the data on chlorophyll and carotenoid distribution between the major photosynthetic pools. The molar ratio between xanthophylls and chlorophyll in the light-harvesting complex of plastids in the ephemeroids (0.5 to 0.6) considerably exceeded that in the summer plants (0.3–0.4). By using salicylaldoxime, an inhibitor of the reverse reaction of the violaxanthin cycle, we were able to calculate the active pool of violaxanthin on its way to zeaxanthin. This pool was shown to amount to 85% of the sum total of xanthophylls of the violaxanthin cycle in the ephemeroid leaf plastids as compared to 60% in the summer species. Thus, potentially, the photosynthetic apparatus in the ephemeroid leaves is better provided with the pigments essential for photoprotective function and for maintaining a high photosynthetic rate under early spring conditions. Under chilling temperatures of 5–10°C and full insolation, PP in ephemeroids was as high as in the summer plants at 20°C.  相似文献

The responses of photosynthetic gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, activities of antioxidant enzymes and lipid membrane peroxidation of two contrasting Picea asperata Mast. populations to 30% of full sunlight (shade) and full sunlight (sun) were investigated under well-watered and drought conditions. Two contrasting populations were from the wet and dry climate regions in China, respectively. For both populations tested, drought resulted in lower needle relative water content (RWC), CO2 assimilation rate ( A ), stomatal conductance ( gs ) and effective PSII quantum yield ( Y ), and higher non-photochemical quenching ( qN ), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and electrolyte leakage in sun plants, whereas these changes were not significant in shade plants. For the wet climate population, shade plants showed higher chlorophyll contents (Chl a , Chl b and Chl a + b ) than sun plants under both well-watered and drought conditions. Our study results implied that shade, applied together with drought, ameliorated the detrimental effects of drought. On the other hand, compared with the wet climate population, the dry climate population was more tolerant to drought in the sun treatment, as indicated by less decreases in A and mass-based leaf nitrogen content ( N mass), more responsive stomata, greater capacity for non-radiative dissipation of excitation energy as heat (analysed by qN ), and higher level of antioxidant enzyme activities as well as lower MDA content and electrolyte leakage. These results demonstrated that the different physiological strategies were employed by the P. asperata populations from contrasting climate regions when the plants were exposed to drought and shade.  相似文献

In the French Alps, Soldanella alpina (S. alpina) grow under shade and sun conditions during the vegetation period. This species was investigated as a model for the dynamic acclimation of shade leaves to the sun under natural alpine conditions, in terms of photosynthesis and leaf anatomy. Photosynthetic activity in sun leaves was only slightly higher than in shade leaves. The leaf thickness, the stomatal density and the epidermal flavonoid content were markedly higher, and the chlorophyll/flavonoid ratio was significantly lower in sun than in shade leaves. Sun leaves also had a more oxidised plastoquinone pool, their PSII efficiency in light was higher and their non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) capacity was higher than that of shade leaves. Shade-sun transferred leaves increased their leaf thickness, stomatal density and epidermal flavonoid content, while their photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll/flavonoid ratio declined compared to shade leaves. Parameters indicating protection against high light and oxidative stress, such as NPQ and ascorbate peroxidase, increased in shade-sun transferred leaves and leaf mortality increased. We conclude that the dynamic acclimation of S. alpina leaves to high light under alpine conditions mainly concerns anatomical features and epidermal flavonoid acclimation, as well as an increase in antioxidative protection. However, this increase is not large enough to prevent damage under stress conditions and to replace damaged leaves.  相似文献

Half a century of research into the physiology and biochemistry of sun–shade acclimation in diverse plants has provided reality checks for contemporary understanding of thylakoid membrane dynamics. This paper reviews recent insights into photosynthetic efficiency and photoprotection from studies of two xanthophyll cycles in old shade leaves from the inner canopy of the tropical trees Inga sapindoides and Persea americana (avocado). It then presents new physiological data from avocado on the time frames of the slow coordinated photosynthetic development of sink leaves in sunlight and on the slow renovation of photosynthetic properties in old leaves during sun to shade and shade to sun acclimation. In so doing, it grapples with issues in vivo that seem relevant to our increasingly sophisticated understanding of ΔpH-dependent, xanthophyll-pigment-stabilized non-photochemical quenching in the antenna of PSII in thylakoid membranes in vitro.  相似文献

Some processes of excess radiation dissipation have been associated with changes in leaf reflectance near 531 nm. We aimed to study the relations between the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) derived from this signal, and photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency (defined as net CO2 assimilation rate/incident photon flux density) in a cereal canopy. Measurements of reflectance, fluorescence, gas exchange and xanthophyll cycle pigments were made in the morning, midday and afternoon in barley canopies with two levels of nitrogen fertilization. The photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency decreased at midday, mainly in the third leaf, in both treatments, with lower values for the nitrogen deficient leaves. The zeaxanthin content showed the inverse pattern, increasing at midday and in the nitrogen deficient treatment. The photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency was well correlated with the epoxidation state, EPS (violaxanthin + 0.5 antheraxanthin)/(violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin). The PRI [here defined as (R539 - R570)/(R539+ R570)] was significantly correlated with epoxidation state and zeaxanthin and with photosynthetic radiation-use efficiency. These results validate the utility of PRI in the assessment of radiation-use efficiency at canopy level.  相似文献
