Population dynamics of 1482 specimens of painted comber, Serranus scriba (Linnaeus, 1758), caught in the Trogir Bay area (eastern mid‐Adriatic) from June 2001 to May 2002 were studied to provide information on age, growth, length–weight relationship, mortality and exploitation rate of the species’ stock. Annuli on otholiths indicated the presence of seven age‐classes. Obtained von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L = 30.36 cm, K = 0.192 year?1 and t0 = ?0.366.  相似文献

Age, growth, and mortality of the edible crab, Cancer pagurus, were determined for the native population in South Wales (UK). Sampling was carried out on a monthly basis between February 2001 and September 2002. Carapace width ranged between 10.4 and 163 mm. Based on the carapace width frequency distribution, the Swansea and Gower population was composed mainly of males belonging to the first and second age‐class (1 and 2), and of females belonging to the third and fourth age‐class (3 and 4). Sex ratio was 1.126 ± 0.27 in favour of males. Carapace width frequency distributions and weight‐at‐age data were used to estimate the von Bertalanffy growth equation parameters. For the population as a whole, these were: L∞ = 199 mm, W∞ = 1179.56 g, K = 0.24 year?1, t0 = ?0.1004 years. The overall carapace width–weight relationship was: W = 0.38(CW2.69). Analysis of covariance indicated a significant difference in the carapace width–weight relationship between males and females in the study area. Total mortality Z and natural mortality M rates for combined sexes were 1.245 year?1 and 0.567 year?1, respectively. The exploitation ratio E was estimated to be 54.43%.  相似文献

The present study investigated the age, growth, mortality and morphometry of the sand smelt, Atherina boyeri, in the Mala Neretva River estuary (mid‐eastern Adriatic Sea). The study of scale annuli showed that the population is up to 4 years of age. However, most sand smelt are in their first and second year; the numbers of older individuals are very low because they migrate upstream and are heavily fished. The von Bertalanffy parameters for the total sample of sand smelt were found to be L = 13.5 cm, K = 0.37 year?1 and t0 = ?0.97. Overall total mortality was estimated at 1.81 year?1, natural mortality was 0.90 year?1 and fishing mortality was 0.91 year?1.  相似文献

The growth and mortality of brushtooth lizardfish Saurida undosquamis (Richardson, 1848) in Iskenderun Bay (eastern Mediterranean Sea) were investigated based on length frequency data using the fisat software. Total length of the sampled 4711 fish ranged from 6.0 to 39.0 cm. The von Bertalanffy growth function estimates were L = 42.00 cm, k = 0.51 year‐1, t0 = −0.29 years. Total mortality rate (Z) was computed as 1.76 year‐1 and the exploitation ratio was 0.51, indicating that the brushtooth lizardfish stock is on the verge being overfished.  相似文献

In order to estimate the population dynamics of the hilsa shad, Tenualosa ilisha, fishery in Sindh, the key population parameters of growth, mortalities, recruitment pattern, exploitation and maximum sustainable yield are discussed. Length frequency data were collected from April to October 2004 from the main commercial (hilsa) landings at Thatta, Sindh. Estimated parameters of the von Bertalanffy (Hum. Biol. 10, 181–213) growth model were L = 31.5 cm, = 1.5 year?1, t0 = ?0.10 year as obtained by the electronic length frequency analysis (ELEFAN I). Estimated natural, fishing, and total mortalities were 2.21, 0.673, 2.89 year?1, respectively. The relative biomass per recruit (B′/R) was 0.95 and yield per recruit (Y′/R) was 0.06 using the knife‐edge selection. The exploitation ratio at the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was Emax = 1.0 year?1, fishing mortality at MSY was Fmax = 2.89 year?1, average target Fopt = 0.5 year?1 and Flimit = 1.47 year?1. The catch and effort data from 1981 to 2004 (MFD, Karachi) were analyzed using the catch and effort data analysis (CEDA) computer programme. Estimated biological reference point of MSY for the Fox model was 891 tonnes (t), R2 = 0.75; for the Schaefer and Pella‐Tomlinson models MSY = 744 t, R2 = 0.49, the outputs of which appeared to be more conservative than the Fox model which indicated a better fit. The overall situation of hilsa fishery is in severe stress and appears vulnerable to overexploitation. On the basis of the present findings, serious attention is required to provide appropriate access of the fish to the Indus River during the spawning period as well as to impose a ban on fishing during upstream migration and on undersized catch to prevent this traditional fishery in this area.  相似文献

The biology and fisheries of Tilapia mariae, the only tilapiine cichlid fish in the Iba Oku (Uyo, Nigeria) wetland stream was studied. There were more females than males in the population. The smallest sexually mature female fish was 11.0 cm total length (TL) while the size at 50% maturity was 17.1 cm TL. Absolute fecundity (Fe) ranged from 953 to 3200 eggs and was positively correlated with TL. The fish bred year‐round with peaks in November, March–April and July–September. The seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) was fitted to the 12 consecutive months length–frequency data (n = 2439) to obtain a VBGF with the following parameters: L∞ (asymptotic length) = 30.4 cm TL, K (growth coefficient) = 0.4 year?1, C (amplitude of growth oscillation) =0.4, and WP (winter point) = 0.9. The seasonalized length‐converted catch curve method gave Z (instantaneous total mortality coefficient) as 1.75 year?1, M (instantaneous natural mortality coefficient) was 0.99 year?1 while F (instantaneous fishing mortality coefficient) was 0.76 year?1 and E (=F/Z the current exploitation rate) was 0.43. Length at first capture (Lc) was 17.7 cm TL. The fish was recruited to the fishery year‐round with two pulses. From the Beverton and Holt relative yield per recruit analysis via the selection ogive procedure, Emax (predicted maximum exploitation rate) was 0.54. The stock was not overexploited, since E < Emax. This study also showed that the fish is an r‐selected species with a few K‐selected traits.  相似文献

The garfish Belone belone euxini (Günther, 1866) is a commercially important pelagic fish species in Sinop artisanal fishery, which is showing a decreasing trend in catch results. As a basis for fisheries management a sampling program was carried out between October 2000 and September 2001 along the Turkish coast of the Black Sea, to study the population structure, growth, and reproduction cycle of garfish in the area, and to achieve a rough estimate of exploitation. The length–weight relationship and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated as W = 0.00076 L3.137, L = 74.64 cm, K = 0.13 year?1, to = ?3.67, respectively. First sexual maturity was estimated at age 2 and at a total length of 38.8 cm for females. The spawning period was from May to September. The total fecundity–length relationship was estimated as F = 0.0041 L4.1086 (r2 = 0.92). Mortality rates were Z = 1.24 year?1, M = 0.23 year?1and F = 1.01 year?1 for total, natural, and fishing mortality, respectively. The exploitation ratio E = 0.81 indicates that the population is heavily exploited.  相似文献

The question of how tropical trees cope with infertile soils has been challenging to address, in part, because fine root dynamics must be studied in situ. We used annual fertilization with nitrogen (N as urea, 12.5 g N m?2 year?1), phosphorus (P as superphosphate, 5 g P m?2 year?1) and potassium (K as KCl, 5 g K m?2 year?1) within 38 ha of old‐growth lowland tropical moist forest in Panama and examined fine root dynamics with minirhizotron images. We expected that added P, above all, would (i) decrease fine root biomass but, (ii) have no impact on fine root turnover. Soil in the study area was moderately acidic (pH = 5.28), had moderate concentrations of exchangeable base cations (13.4 cmol kg?1), low concentrations of Bray‐extractable phosphate (PO4 = 2.2 mg kg?1), and modest concentrations of KCl‐extractable nitrate (NO3 = 5.0 mg kg?1) and KCl‐extractable ammonium (NH4 = 15.5 mg kg?1). Added N increased concentrations of KCl‐extractable NO3 and acidified the soil by one pH unit. Added P increased concentrations of Bray‐extractable PO4 and P in the labile fraction. Concentrations of exchangeable K were elevated in K addition plots but reduced by N additions. Fine root dynamics responded to added K rather than added P. After 2 years, added K decreased fine root biomass from 330 to 275 g m?2. The turnover coefficient of fine roots <1 mm diameter ranged from 2.6 to 4.4 per year, and the largest values occurred in plots with added K. This study supported the view that biomass and dynamics of fine roots respond to soil nutrient availability in species‐rich, lowland tropical moist forest. However, K rather than P elicited root responses. Fine roots smaller than 1 mm have a short lifetime (<140 days), and control of fine root production by nutrient availability in tropical forests deserves more study.  相似文献

Growth of kelee shad, Hilsa kelee, in the coastal waters of Pakistan was estimated from the lengthfrequency samples. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was L t = 23.10 (1 ? exp (?0.94(t + 0.18))). Estimated parameters of total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and fishing mortality (F) were 2.08 year?1, 1.78 year?1, and 0.30 year?1 respectively. The length-at-first capture was Lc = 10.88 cm. Biomass per recruitment (B/R) and yield per recruitment (Y′/R) were 0.87 and 0.031 respectively. The annual exploitation rate was U = 0.12. The exploitation ratio for maximum yield per recruit E max = 0.73 and fishing mortality for maximum yield per recruit F max = 1.52; biological reference point F opt = 0.89 year?1 and F limit = 1.18 year?1. Present estimations showed that the natural mortality was higher than fishing mortality in Hilsa kelee, indicating that the state of the stock is sustainable and the fishery of kelee shad should not be increased beyond current levels in the coastal waters of Pakistan.  相似文献

The population parameters of stargazer (Uranoscopus scaber Linnaeus, 1758) were studied regarding age composition, sex ratio, growth, survival and mortality rates, and the exploitation rate in the southeastern Black Sea near the coast of Turkey during the 2011–2012 fishing season. According to ageing analysis of the samples, age group 1 is the most abundant (47.76%), followed by age 2 (41.04%), age 3 (9.33%), age 0 (1.12%) and age 4 (0.75%). Mean totals as well as total lengths and weights for males and females were 14.5 ± 0.22 cm and 12.9 ± 0.19 g, 16.6 ± 0.24 cm and 62.1 ± 2.76 g, and 37.2 ± 1.92 cm and 87.1 ± 3.88 g, respectively. The mean condition factor was K = 0.0167, while the sex ratio was 53.98% female, 38.75% male and 7.27% immature. Length‐weight, age‐length and age‐weight equations were W = 0.014 × L3.059, L(t)=44.5*[1?e?0.148*(t +1.242)] and W(t)=1544.4*[1?e?0.148*(t + 1.242)]3.059, respectively. The computed survival rate (S), instantaneous total mortality rate (Z), annual mortality rate (A), natural mortality rate (M) and fishing mortality rate (F) were S = 28.94%, Z = 1.24 year?1, A = 71.06%, M = 0.26 year?1 and F = 0.98 year?1, respectively. The exploitation rate was 0.79, which is above the optimum exploitation levels.  相似文献

1. Surface ecosystems provide the primary source of organic matter to many cave communities. Variation in the strength of connectivity to the surface suggests that some caves may be more resource‐limited than others. To test this, we examined diet, prey availability and production of an obligate cave salamander Gyrinophilus palleucus (Plethodontidae), a top predator, in two south‐eastern U.S.A. caves with different levels of organic matter (Tony Sinks cave, 165 g AFDM m?2; Bluff River cave, 62 g AFDM m?2). 2. We quantified density, biomass, growth rate, production and diet of G. palleucus monthly for 21 months. Diet composition, differences in prey communities and seasonal patterns in prey consumption were also analysed. 3. Salamander density, biomass and secondary production were significantly greater in the high organic matter cave (0.10 m?2, 0.18 g AFDM m?2, 0.12 g AFDM m?2 year?1) than in the low organic matter cave (0.03 m?2, 0.03 g AFDM m?2, 0.01 g AFDM m?2 year?1). Although growth rates were not statistically different between the two cave salamander populations, low recaptures probably influenced this result. 4. Isopoda prey were the major contributor to salamander production in the high organic matter cave (69%). In the low organic matter cave, production was provided by isopods (41%) and oligochaetes (20%). The lower number of prey taxa contributing to salamander production in the high organic matter cave suggests the ability to forage more selectively. 5. The differences in foraging strategy, density, biomass and secondary production were probably related to differences in the strength of surface connectivity, which controls organic matter supply. Links between basal resource level and top predator performance show the importance of bottom‐up limitation in the food webs of caves and other detritus‐based ecosystems.  相似文献

This study investigates aspects of the life history of the polychaete Thoracophelia furcifera on a sandy beach in southern Brazil. Two fixed transects perpendicular to the shoreline in the intertidal zone were sampled fortnightly from May 2008 to April 2009 at low tide. Five T. furcifera samples were collected along each transect and sediment temperature and the salinity of interstitial water were recorded. The material was washed over 0.5- and 0.088-mm sieves, and the width of setiger 8 of each specimen was measured. A total of 5,870 organisms were examined and the estimated parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth curve were L 3.60?mm (Wd8S), K 0.63?year?1, C 0.3 and WP 0.97 (Rn 0.132). Life span was 2.6?years, instantaneous mortality rate Z was 3.8?year?1 and the growth index φ′ 0.91. Mean density ranged from 644.44?±?191.77 to 2,783.33?±?453.64 ind m?2 and mean biomass ranged from 2.52?±?0.55 to 9.52?±?1.83?g?m?2. Recruitment occurred from April to July and ovigerous females were found from June to November. Annual secondary production was 6.582?g?m?2?year?1, mean biomass was 5.638?g?m?2 and turnover rate was 1.167. The high values for density, secondary production and biomass suggest that T. furcifera constitute an important food source. These features of T. furcifera’ life strategy demonstrate the significant role this species plays in ecosystem dynamics.  相似文献

Body size, geographical distribution, and biomass make Adamussium colbecki (Smith, 1902) one of the most conspicuous bivalve species in the Antarctic. Based on samples collected in austral summer 1999/2000 in Terra Nova Bay, the annual formation of shell growth bands visible on X-ray photographs was verified by stable isotope analysis. A general von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to size-at-age data of 25 individuals (H=108.86 mm, K=0.114 year−1, t0=−0.367, D=1.284). Somatic production calculated from mass-specific growth rates was 234.6 kJ m−2 year−1. Gonadal productivity amounted to 70.92 kJ m−2 year−1. Annual somatic and gonad production-to-biomass ratios (P/B) were 0.199 and 0.052, respectively. According to its consumption and production, A. colbecki is likely to play a significant role in the trophic web of Terra Nova Bay.  相似文献

Age, growth and mortality were analysed for brown comber, Serranus hepatus, collected in the eastern Adriatic from May 2002 to June 2003. Fish aged 2–7 years were present in the samples. Growth in length including both sexes was expressed using the von Bertalanffy equation, L = 14.82, K = 0.217 and t0 = −1.672. Age class 2, ranging in length from 5.8 to 9.0 cm TL, dominated the sample (29.3%). Total and natural mortality were Z = 1.73 year−1 and M = 0.63 year−1, respectively. The exploitation rate, E = 0.64, revealed a high fishing pressure on the stock in the studied area.  相似文献

The regular sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus pallidus (G.O. Sars, 1871), is a widespread epibenthic species in high-Arctic waters. However, little is known about its distribution, standing stock, population dynamics and production. In the northern Barents Sea, S. pallidus was recorded on seabed still photographs at 10 out of 11 stations in water depths of 80–360?m. Mean abundances along photographic transects of 150–300 m length ranged between <0.1 and 14.7?ind. m?2 yielding a grand average of 3.6?ind.?m?2. The small-scale distribution along the transects was patchy, with densities varying from nil to an overall maximum of 25.5 ind. m?2, and exhibited a significant relation to the number of stones present. Sea urchin test diameters, measured on scaled photographs, extended from 7 to 90?mm. Median values at single stations varied from 14 to 46?mm, showing a significant inverse relationship to water depth. Biomass, estimated by combining photographic abundances, size frequencies and a size-mass function established with trawled specimens, ranged between <0.1 and 3.0?g ash-free dry mass m?2, averaging about 1.0?g ash free dry mass m?2. An analysis of skeletal growth bands in genital plates was carried out with 143 trawled individuals ranging in test diameter (D) from 4 to 48?mm. Assuming these bands to represent annual growth marks, the ages of the specimens analysed ranged between 3 and 42 years. A von Bertalanffy function was fitted to size-at-age data to model individual growth pattern (D?=?102.3?mm, k?=?0.011 year?1, t0?=?0.633?year). The annual mortality rate Z of the population in the northern Barents Sea was estimated from a size-converted catch curve to be 0.08 year?1. Applying the weight-specific growth rate method, the average P/B ratio and the mean annual production of this population were estimated as 0.07 year?1 and 0.076?g AFDM m?2 year?1, respectively. In conclusion, S. pallidus is characterized by slow growth, low mortality, high longevity and low productivity. Because of its relatively high biomass, it is considered to contribute significantly to total benthic standing stock and carbon flux in the study area.  相似文献

Moroccan white seabream Diplodus sargus cadenati (n = 603) were caught off the Canary Islands from April 2000 to March 2001. Total length ranged from 46 to 404 mm. The subspecies was characterized as being dygynous with partial protandry. Overall ratio of males to females was 1 : 2.9. The reproductive season extended from December to May, with a peak in spawning activity in January–February. Fifty per cent maturity was reached at 201 mm total length in males and 216 mm in females. The length–weight relationship for all individuals was described by the following parameters: a = 0.000023, and b = 2.96, when length is given in millimeters and weight in grams. Fish of 0–12 years in age were found. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the entire population were: L = 467 mm, k = 0.143 year?1 and t0 = ?2.14 year. Growth parameters differed between males and females. For all fish, instantaneous rates of mortality were Z = 0.68 year?1, M = 0.31 ± 0.6 year?1 and F = 0.37 ± 0.6 year?1; the exploitation ratio was E = 0.54 ± 0.9. Length at first capture for all individuals was 173 mm. The stock exploited above is an assumed optimum.  相似文献

Significant increases in remotely sensed vegetation indices in the northern latitudes since the 1980s have been detected and attributed at annual and growing season scales. However, we presently lack a systematic understanding of how vegetation responds to asymmetric seasonal environmental changes. In this study, we first investigated trends in the seasonal mean leaf area index (LAI) at northern latitudes (north of 30°N) between 1982 and 2009 using three remotely sensed long‐term LAI data sets. The most significant LAI increases occurred in summer (0.009 m2 m?2 year?1, p < .01), followed by autumn (0.005 m2 m?2 year?1, p < .01) and spring (0.003 m2 m?2 year?1, p < .01). We then quantified the contribution of elevating atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2), climate change, nitrogen deposition, and land cover change to seasonal LAI increases based on factorial simulations from 10 state‐of‐the‐art ecosystem models. Unlike previous studies that used multimodel ensemble mean (MME), we used the Bayesian model averaging (BMA) to optimize the integration of model ensemble. The optimally integrated ensemble LAI changes are significantly closer to the observed seasonal LAI changes than the traditional MME results. The BMA factorial simulations suggest that eCO2 provides the greatest contribution to increasing LAI trends in all seasons (0.003–0.007 m2 m?2 year?1), and is the main factor driving asymmetric seasonal LAI trends. Climate change controls the spatial pattern of seasonal LAI trends and dominates the increase in seasonal LAI in the northern high latitudes. The effects of nitrogen deposition and land use change are relatively small in all seasons (around 0.0002 m2 m?2 year?1 and 0.0001–0.001 m2 m?2 year?1, respectively). Our analysis of the seasonal LAI responses to the interactions between seasonal changes in environmental factors offers a new perspective on the response of global vegetation to environmental changes.  相似文献

Present study evaluated the population status of the Bluemouth (Helicolenus dactylopterus) population distributed in the Antalya Bay for the first time, within the scope of two different surveys carried out in monthly basis, between September 2009 and June 2011 (200–900 m). In accordance with the major availability of the food, 80.9% of the total catch (in number) of the species at the upper slope (200–499 m). The 80.8% of all recruits’ specimens inhabits between 200 and 399 m while 72% of the total spawner specimens (TL ≥ 20 cm) inhabits at depths of between 600 and 799 m. Highest average abundance of the species was estimated 1,060 n/km2 (400 m), while the highest average biomass was 93 kg/km2 (600 m). Lengths of individuals ranged from 4 to 36 cm, and estimated ages from 0 to 27 years. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth curves were L   = 34.14 cm, K = 0.09 year?1, and t0 = ?1.28 years. Margin band analysis confirmed the formation of a single growth annulus per year. In the central part of the otolith, close to the nucleus, a strongly marked check ring is formed which presenting first time for this species in the literature. The duration of the spawning stage for the females was observed between December and February. Selectivity rate of the commercially used 44 mm diamond codend mesh, with a 7.4 cm catch size, found to be very low for the species (a first spawning size of 17–20 cm). The stock of Bluemouth in the Antalya Bay was considered in above reference levels and in high abundance status due to estimated low fishing mortality (0.067?1), exploitation rate status below reference level (0.207?1) and Fcurr is very low than reference point (0.219?1).  相似文献

National scale projections of bioenergy crop yields and their environmental impacts are essential to identify appropriate locations to place bioenergy crops and ensure sustainable land use strategies. In this study, we used the process‐based Daily Century (DAYCENT) model with site‐specific environmental data to simulate sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) biomass yield, soil organic carbon (SOC) change, and nitrous oxide emissions across cultivated lands in the continental United States. The simulated rainfed dry biomass productivity ranged from 0.8 to 19.2 Mg ha?1 year?1, with a spatiotemporal average of  Mg ha?1 year?1, and a coefficient of variation of 35%. The average SOC sequestration and direct nitrous oxide emission rates were simulated as  Mg CO2e ha?1 year?1 and  Mg CO2e ha?1 year?1, respectively. Compared to field‐observed biomass yield data at multiple locations, model predictions of biomass productivity showed a root mean square error (RMSE) of 5.6 Mg ha?1 year?1. In comparison to the multi State (n = 21) NASS database, our results showed RMSE of 5.5 Mg ha?1 year?1. Model projections of baseline SOC showed RMSE of 1.9 kg/m2 in comparison to a recently available continental SOC stock dataset. The model‐predicted N2O emissions are close to 1.25% of N input. Our results suggest 10.2 million ha of cultivated lands in the Southern and Lower Midwestern United States will produce >10 Mg ha?1 year?1 with net carbon sequestration under rainfed conditions. Cultivated lands in Upper Midwestern states including Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Michigan, and North Dakota showed lower sorghum biomass productivity (average: 6.9 Mg ha?1 year?1) with net sequestration (average: 0.13 Mg CO2e ha?1 year?1). Our national‐scale spatially explicit results are critical inputs for robust life cycle assessment of bioenergy production systems and land use‐based climate change mitigation strategies.  相似文献

1. Macrobrachium hainanense is a predatory palaemonid shrimp (total length >7 cm) that can be abundant [density 3–5 m?2; biomass 484–606 mg ash‐free dry mass (AFDM) m?2] in forest streams in Hong Kong, China. This study investigated the growth and production of M. hainanense during 2001 and 2002 in pools of two forested streams (one third‐ and one fourth‐order). 2. The growth of tagged individuals was recorded in situ and compared with that of tagged and untagged shrimps in laboratory tanks. Field and laboratory estimates yielded similar growth rates of 0.7 mm carapace length (CL) per month, and instantaneous growth rate was 0.004 g AFDM g?1 day?1. Tagging did not affect growth in the laboratory. Cohort analysis of field populations produced similar estimates of growth to that of tagged individuals, and the growth of M. hainanense was generally slower than has been reported for other Macrobrachium species. Mass‐specific growth rate of M. hainanense in the field varied with size and was two to five times higher in small individuals (<10 mm CL). In addition, growth rate varied with season and was 40% lower in the dry season when temperature was at the annual minimum. 3. Males grew bigger than females (36 versus 25 mm CL). The minimum lifespan of M. hainanense in the field, calculated from size‐specific growth rates, ranged from 29.3 months (females) to 47.6 months (males). Male lifespan derived from cohort analysis was estimated as 48 and 46 months in the two streams. Females reached maturity in 17–18 months (at 15–17 mm CL) while males matured at 24–26 months (at 18–22 mm CL). Females bred twice (at 2 and 3 years of age) while males probably bred three times (at 2, 3 and 4 years) in both streams. 4. Macrobrachium hainanense production in the fourth‐order stream, calculated by the size‐frequency method, was 900 and 1096 mg AFDM m?2 year?1 (for 2001 and 2002, respectively) with a production/biomass (P/B) of 2.1–2.3 year?1. In the third‐order stream, production was 987 and 1304 mg AFDM m?2 year?1 (for 2001 and 2002, respectively) with a P/B of 1.7–2.1 year?1. Production estimates based on the instantaneous growth method were half of those obtained by the size‐frequency method. 5. Although M. hainanense production at the third‐order stream exceeded that in the fourth‐order, growth rates showed the opposite pattern and were 0.31–0.43 mm CL month?1 and 0.56–0.65 mm CL month?1 in the third‐ and fourth‐order streams, respectively. Greater mortality in the latter may account for low production at a site where growth rate was high. 6. Production of M. hainanense in both streams was lower during 2001 when rainfall was higher. This may reflect the influence of spates associated with monsoonal rains, which could have reduced M. hainanense production through spate‐induced mortality or by reducing the abundance of prey. This study provides the first in situ estimate of secondary production by a non‐commercial Macrobrachium species in Asia or elsewhere. It involved a whole‐pool approach to sampling that allowed the estimation of production and population parameters on a realistic scale.  相似文献
