Habitat degradation affects native stream fish populations worldwide. We examined the impact of fluctuation in environmental variables on the population dynamics of the federally threatened Santa Ana sucker, Catostomus santaanae, in the Santa Ana River, California through: 1) annual quantitative surveys of C. santaanae abundance and habitat at three 100-m sites between 2001 and 2008 and 2) annual surveys of habitat composition within a 30-km stretch of the Santa Ana River between 2006 and 2008. We used Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC) to evaluate competing models that used environmental variables to explain variation in C. santaanae abundance among sites and years. The most plausible model identified a positive relationship between C. santaanae abundance and both the amount of coarse substrate (i.e., gravel and cobble) and rate of discharge among site-years. Surveys at the 30-km scale indicated that the prevalence of coarse substrate declined in a downstream direction in each year and that the total amount of this habitat type varied annually. Specifically, cobble/gravel habitat was mostly confined to the upstream 4 km, 9.6 km, and 5.1 km of the survey area in 2006, 2007, and 2008, respectively. Fine sediment comprised the bulk of downstream habitat every year. This large-scale flux in the distribution of coarse sediment likely has a large effect on the population dynamics of C. santaanae in the Santa Ana River. Our results underscore the need to maintain and enhance suitable C. santaanae habitat to ensure its long-term persistence in the Santa Ana River.  相似文献

The herbivorous fish Catostomus santaanae is a federally “threatened” freshwater fish species endemic to southern California and is the centre of legal battles over water use. Because little is known about the nutritional ecology of this species, we investigated the nutritional physiology of C. santaanae to better understand their dietary and energetic needs with the goal of generating data useful in conservation efforts. Individuals of C. santaanae were raised for six weeks on an algal diet in the laboratory. They digested approximately 45%, 55% and 80% of protein, soluble carbohydrate and lipid, respectively, from the algal diet. Their metabolic rate (~0.0024 mg O2 min?1 g?1) suggested they would need to eat more than their body mass per day of an algal diet to thrive. Digestive enzyme activities of the laboratory‐reared and wild‐caught fish showed patterns typical of a “plug‐flow reactor” gut with high intake and rapid gut transit. However, lipase activities remained elevated throughout the gut, and this result, coupled with the lipid digestibility data, and evidence of feeding selectivity on specific diatom taxa in nature, suggests that C. santaanae targets diatoms as it grazes and that diatom lipid may be crucial to their survival. Our data set provides parameters that can be used in conservation modelling efforts towards habitat restoration.  相似文献

Further evidence is presented that the epigastric pain of duodenal ulceration, situated between the rib margins and just below the xiphisternum, arises from the lower oesophagus.One-hundred patients with duodenal ulceration were divided into those with epigastric pain (61) and those with pain in the upper abdomen but not in the epigastrium (39). Perfusion of 0·1 N HCl into the lower oesophagus reproduced epigastric pain in 53 of the 61 with epigastric pain (mean 37 ml) but in none of the 39 without (mean 125 ml). All those who had been woken by epigastric pain at night in the previous four weeks had a positive test.In five the test remained positive even though the acid was neutralized by a continuous perfusion of alkali just below the gastro-oesophageal junction. In another five 200 ml 0·1 N HCl instilled into the stomach for 21 minutes did not reproduce epigastric pain, even though 30 ml perfused for three minutes into the lower oesophagus did.  相似文献

The corticospinal (CS) tract is the anatomical support of the exquisite motor ability to skillfully manipulate small objects, a prerogative mainly of primates1. In case of lesion affecting the CS projection system at its origin (lesion of motor cortical areas) or along its trajectory (cervical cord lesion), there is a dramatic loss of manual dexterity (hand paralysis), as seen in some tetraplegic or hemiplegic patients. Although there is some spontaneous functional recovery after such lesion, it remains very limited in the adult. Various therapeutic strategies are presently proposed (e.g. cell therapy, neutralization of inhibitory axonal growth molecules, application of growth factors, etc), which are mostly developed in rodents. However, before clinical application, it is often recommended to test the feasibility, efficacy, and security of the treatment in non-human primates. This is especially true when the goal is to restore manual dexterity after a lesion of the central nervous system, as the organization of the motor system of rodents is different from that of primates1,2. Macaque monkeys are illustrated here as a suitable behavioral model to quantify manual dexterity in primates, to reflect the deficits resulting from lesion of the motor cortex or cervical cord for instance, measure the extent of spontaneous functional recovery and, when a treatment is applied, evaluate how much it can enhance the functional recovery.The behavioral assessment of manual dexterity is based on four distinct, complementary, reach and grasp manual tasks (use of precision grip to grasp pellets), requiring an initial training of adult macaque monkeys. The preparation of the animals is demonstrated, as well as the positioning with respect to the behavioral set-up. The performance of a typical monkey is illustrated for each task. The collection and analysis of relevant parameters reflecting precise hand manipulation, as well as the control of force, are explained and demonstrated with representative results. These data are placed then in a broader context, showing how the behavioral data can be exploited to investigate the impact of a spinal cord lesion or of a lesion of the motor cortex and to what extent a treatment may enhance the spontaneous functional recovery, by comparing different groups of monkeys (treated versus sham treated for instance). Advantages and limitations of the behavioral tests are discussed. The present behavioral approach is in line with previous reports emphasizing the pertinence of the non-human primate model in the context of nervous system diseases2,3.  相似文献

A specially designed mental task was performed by 16 subjects for frequency domain analysis of skin conductance (SC) to evaluate mental workload. The task was to memorize target letters, detect them within a 4 x 4 alphabet arrangement, and answer whether the number of targets contained in the arrangement corresponded to a randomly displayed number. As the number of target letters increased, the score for the card-sort NASA Task Load Index (CSTLX) and task performance increased significantly. The traditional parameter for the number of transient wave forms of SC response (SCR) and the height of its wave did not show any significant effect of task difficulty. In addition, SCRs were subjected to Fourier transformation and integration of the spectrum from 0.03 to 0.5 Hz. This frequency domain analysis enabled detection of small differences in mental workload that could not be detected by traditional amplitude domain analysis. Frequency-based analysis enables easy processing of physiological signals and is very effective in evaluating mental stress using SC recorded under actual environmental conditions such as the driving of a vehicle.  相似文献

A group of 60 fisherwomen, aged 20 to 50 yrs., were studied to evaluate their occupational workloads. Of the eight activities involved in fish handling, only four, viz., sorting, washing, drying, and selling, which are most frequently carried out by the fisherwomen, were selected. The heart rate responses and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were used as measures of occupational workload. Based on the findings, the occupational workload could be classified as "moderately heavy". A significant influence of age and body weight on the physiological workload was observed, being negatively correlated with age and positively with weight.  相似文献

Healthy humans are able to place light and heavy objects in small and large target locations with remarkable accuracy. Here we examine how dexterity demand and physical demand affect flexibility in joint coordination and end-effector kinematics when healthy young adults perform an upper extremity reaching task. We manipulated dexterity demand by changing target size and physical demand by increasing external resistance to reaching. Uncontrolled manifold analysis was used to decompose variability in joint coordination patterns into variability stabilizing the end-effector and variability de-stabilizing the end-effector during reaching. Our results demonstrate a proportional increase in stabilizing and de-stabilizing variability without a change in the ratio of the two variability components as physical demands increase. We interpret this finding in the context of previous studies showing that sensorimotor noise increases with increasing physical demands. We propose that the larger de-stabilizing variability as a function of physical demand originated from larger sensorimotor noise in the neuromuscular system. The larger stabilizing variability with larger physical demands is a strategy employed by the neuromuscular system to counter the de-stabilizing variability so that performance stability is maintained. Our findings have practical implications for improving the effectiveness of movement therapy in a wide range of patient groups, maintaining upper extremity function in old adults, and for maximizing athletic performance.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate maximal torque of the knee flexors and extensors, flexor/extensor ratios, and maximal torque differences between the 2 lower extremities in young track and field athletes. Forty male track and field athletes 13-17 years old and 20 male nonathletes of the same age participated in the study. Athletes were divided into 4 groups according to their age and event (12 runners and 10 jumpers 13-15 years old, 12 runners and 6 jumpers 16-17 years old) and nonathletes into 2 groups of the same age. Maximal torque evaluation of knee flexors and extensors was performed on an isokinetic dynamometer at 60°·s(-1). At the age of 16-17 years, jumpers exhibited higher strength values at extension than did runners and nonathletes, whereas at the age of 13-15 years, no significant differences were found between events. Younger athletes were weaker than older athletes at flexion. Runners and jumpers were stronger than nonathletes in all relative peak torque parameters. Nonathletes exhibited a higher flexor/extensor ratio compared with runners and jumpers. Strength imbalance in athletes was found between the 2 lower extremities in knee flexors and extensors and also at flexor/extensor ratio of the same extremity. Young track and field athletes exhibit strength imbalances that could reduce their athletic performance, and specific strength training for the weak extremity may be needed.  相似文献

Given growing computational resources, radiofrequency electromagnetic field dosimetry is becoming more vital in the study of biological effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. The study analyzes numerical methods which are used in theoretical dosimetry to assess the exposure level and specific absorption rate distribution. The advances of theoretical dosimetry are shown. Advantages and disadvantages of different methods are analyzed in respect to electromagnetic field biological effects. The finite-difference time-domain method was implemented in detail; also evaluated were possible uncertainties of complex biological structure simulation for bioelectromagnetic investigations.  相似文献

Stable auxotrophic mutants were isolated by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine treatment of Mycobacterium fortuitum NIHJ 1615, M. smegmatis NIHJ 1628 and M. vaccae NIHJ 1637. The number of stable mutants obtained were 0.17, 0.46 and 0.02% of the surviving mutagenized cells screened for the three species, respectively. Mutants differed from their parents in a single nutritional requirement except in the case of SM29, a mutant of M. fortuitum , and SM33, a mutant of M. smegmatis , which differed from their parents in two auxotrophic traits.  相似文献

PurposeThe aim of the study was a multicenter evaluation of MLC&jaws-defined small field output factors (OF) for different linear accelerator manufacturers and for different beam energies using the latest synthetic single crystal diamond detector commercially available. The feasibility of providing an experimental OF data set, useful for on-site measurements validation, was also evaluated.MethodsThis work was performed in the framework of the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM) SBRT working group. The project was subdivided in two phases: in the first phase each center measured OFs using their own routine detector for nominal field sizes ranging from 10 × 10 cm2 to 0.6 × 0.6 cm2. In the second phase, the measurements were repeated in all centers using the PTW 60019 microDiamond detector.ResultsThe project enrolled 30 Italian centers. Micro-ion chambers and silicon diodes were used for OF measurements in 24 and 6 centers respectively. Gafchromic films and TLDs were used for very small field OFs in 3 and 1 centers. Regarding the measurements performed with the user’s detectors, OF standard deviations (SD) for field sizes down to 2 × 2 cm2 were in all cases <2.7%. In the second phase, a reduction of around 50% of the SD was obtained using the microDiamond detector.ConclusionsThe measured values presented in this multicenter study provide a consistent dataset for OFs that could be a useful tool for improving dosimetric procedures in centers. The microDiamond data present a small variation among the centers confirming that this detector can contribute to improve overall accuracy in radiotherapy.  相似文献

Micropropagation and field evaluation of micropropagated plants of turmeric   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A protocol was developed for in vitro propagation of turmeric cv `elite' using young vegetative buds from sprouting rhizomes. The shoot buds produced multiple shoots when cultured on MS solid medium supplemented with benzyladenine and 1-naphthalene acetic acid. The effect of various cytokinins on shoot multiplication was studied by culturing the shoot tips on MS liquid medium supplemented with benzyladenine, benzyladenine riboside, kinetin, kinetin riboside, zeatin, 6-,-dimethylallylaminopurine, adenine, adenine sulfate or metatopolin each at 10 M in combination with 1-naphthalene acetic acid (1 M). Significant differences were observed between the treatments. Liquid medium was more favourable than agar medium for shoot multiplication. Among the various concentrations of agar tested, 0.4% and 0.6% were the best and produced the highest number of shoots per explant. Among the different carbohydrates tested, sucrose, fructose, glucose, sugar cubes, maltose, levulose and market sugar were found to be equally effective for shoot multiplication and xylose, rhamnose, lactose and soluble starch were inhibitory. Ninety five percent of the micropropagated plants survived in sterilized soil in paper cups and all of them survived in the field. Among 48 plants, two plants showed variegated leaves on the tillers. The micropropagated plants showed a significant increase in shoot length, number of tillers, number and length of leaves, number of fingers and total fresh rhizome weight per plant when compared with conventionally propagated plants. RAPD analysis of 11 regenerated plants using sixteen 10-mer primers did not show any polymorphism.  相似文献

Passive integrated transponder (PIT)-tagging is commonly used in behavioural studies of fish, although long-term evaluations of effects from tagging under natural conditions are scarce. We PIT-tagged common bream Abramis brama, European perch Perca fluviatilis, pike Esox lucius and roach Rutilus rutilus, released them in their lakes of origin and recaptured them after 103–3269 days. Overall, tagged fish did not differ in condition from non-tagged fish, except for small R. rutilus that had a lower length-specific body mass in one lake in 1 year. We conclude that PIT-tagging in general has negligible long-term effects on fish condition.  相似文献

Indonesians commonly perform activities on the floor that require squatting postures. It has been identified that adopting squatting postures without any proper support would gradually cause postural stress. This study examines the influence of different squatting heights to the body kinematics and subjective discomfort rating. The subjects were divided into two different body types: overweight subjects with BMI > 24.9 and normal weight subjects with BMI 18-24.9. The subjects adopted a squatting posture at no-stool condition and at the stool height of 10, 15, and 20 cm. The task was to simulate the work close to the ground level with the hip joint deeply flexed. Body segmental angular flexion (SAF) and the visual analog scale (VAS) method were selected for parameter analyses. Significant differences were found in both parameters SAF (trunk, hip, knee, and ankle) and VAS. The interaction effect was found by squatting height and the body type for SAF of the trunk (p < 0.05). However, the increasing BMI index was also found significantly affected associated with the anthropometrical characteristics for buttock height and lower limbs depth. It is suggested that normal weight subjects sit comfortably at 15 cm stool height, whereas overweight subjects preferred 20 cm stool height as a better acceptability condition in terms of overall parameter analyses.  相似文献
