Recent work suggests that foliar- and root-feeding insects can interact in a novel plus-minus fashion. However, the effects of herbivores may be different at different densities. This paper describes two laboratory experiments investigating the effect of increasing insect density on plant performance and the host-plant mediated interaction between a leaf-mining fly and root-feeding chafer larvae. Above- and below-ground insect herbivory decreased plant performance. The effects of the root feeder were, for some parameters, different between the two densities of chafer larvae. Leaf mining significantly decreased the performance of the chafer larvae, while root herbivory was found to increase the pupal weight (related to fecundity) of the leaf miner. The effects of root herbivory suggest that the relationships between herbivore density and plant performance may be curved as the greater chafer density had no significant increased effect on the plants or foliar-feeding insects.  相似文献

One effect of global warming may be an increase in night-time temperatures with daytime temperatures remaining largely unchanged. We examined this potential effect of global warming on the performance of tobacco hornworm larvae, Manduca sexta (Sphingidae), by manipulating night-time temperature and dietary rutin levels simultaneously under a 12 light:12 dark photoregime. All four thermal regimes (26:14, 26:18, 26:22, and 26:26° C) had a daytime temperature of 26° C, with the night-time temperature increased from 14 to 26° C by increments of 4° C. Dietary rutin levels (0, 10 and 20 moles g–1 fresh weight of diet) reflected those occurring naturally in the leaves of tomato, a preferred host plant of M. sexta. With low night-time temperatures (14 and 18° C), rutin had a negative linear effect on developmental rate, relative growth rate and relative consumption rate of the caterpillars. However, at a night-time temperature of 22° C, rutin had a negative non-linear effect. At a night-time temperature of 26° C, rutin had a negative linear impact but less so than at the other nightime temperatures. Likewise, the negative effect of rutin on molting duration was mitigated as night-time temperature increased. Final larval weight decreased linearly with increased dietary rutin concentrations. Total amount of food ingested was not affected by either rutin or thermal regime. As expected, the caterpillars developed faster under an alternating 26:14° C regime than a constant 20° C regime (the average temperature for the alternating regime), but the effect of rutin depended on the thermal regime. Switching daytime and night-time temperatures had no statistically significant effect on caterpillar performance. Overall, the effect of rutin on rates of larval performance was greater at some levels of warmer nights but damped at another level. These results indicate that the potential effect of warmer nights on insect performance is not a simple function of temperature because there can be interactions between night-time temperature and dietary allelochemicals.  相似文献

Abstract: The proportions of hermaphrodite to staminate flowers in inflorescences of the andromonoecious species Caesalpinb calycina vary. Analysis of fruit position along the flowering rhachis, and also of the sex of floral buds in inflorescences with fruits set in different positions, indicate that fruiting success influences the sex of flowers in distal positions along the rhachis. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Andromonoecy, as a breeding system, has generated a considerable body of theory in terms of sexual selection, but extended records comparing the performance of pollen grains from staminate versus hermaphrodite flowers are still sparse. The objective in this study was to elucidate the role of staminate flowers in the andromonoecious breeding system of olive (Olea europaea). METHODS: To determine the meaning of staminate flowers, an evaluation was made of resource allocation to, and phenology of, staminate and hermaphrodite flowers in the cultivar 'Mission', and a comparison was made of the male function between both kinds of flowers. KEY RESULTS: Dry weight of hermaphrodite flowers was 19 % greater than dry weight of staminate flowers arising in comparable positions of the panicle. This difference was mainly due to pistil and petal weight; there were no significant differences in stamen weight. There were no significant differences between staminate and hermaphrodite flowers in either amount of pollen per anther, or pollen quality as determined by pollen viability, germinability or ability to fertilize other flowers. There was no significant link between gender and time of anthesis. However, position of the flower within the panicle correlated with time of anthesis and gender. Flowers at the apex and at primary pedicels tended to be hermaphrodite and open earlier, whereas flowers arising in secondary pedicels were mainly staminate and were commonly the last to reach anthesis. CONCLUSIONS: It is proposed that the main advantage provided by production of staminate flowers in olive is to enhance male fitness by increasing pollen output at the whole plant level, although a relict function of attracting pollinators cannot be completely discarded.  相似文献

Delayed outcrossed pollination of female spinach plants (Spinacea oleracea L.) resulted in increased stigma length and a male-biased progeny sex ratio. One group of females was outcrossed 10–14 d after anthesis, a second group was never outcrossed, and a third group, the control, consisted of females that were outcrossed as soon as stigmas appeared. Stigma length was significantly greater for plants in the delayed and never outcrossed groups compared to the control. Furthermore, stigmas of virgin flowers grew until they were either pollinated or the plants produced anthers. Plants that were never outcrossed produced their own anthers and self pollinated. The resulting progeny were all female. The sons of the delayed outcrossed group produced more stamens, on average, than sons of the control group. The observed male-biased sex ratio among the progeny of delayed outcrossed plants could be due to gametic selection. To test for this, plants were held virgin until their stigmas reached a length of at least 3 mm. These stigmas were then pollinated either distally or proximally. No significant difference was found between the progeny sex ratios of these two treatments. However, both sex ratios were more male biased than progeny of plants pollinated the day of anthesis (control group of the first experiment). We conclude that maternal factors, rather than gametophytic selection, may be responsible for the male-biased sex ratio observed in the first experiment.  相似文献

The effects of sex and age of a dioecious tree, Forchhammeria pallida, on the survival and development of a Mexican harlequin bug, Murgantia varicolor, were examined. In the laboratory, bugs reared on fruits or fruits and leaves developed rapidly and had a high rate of survivorship, whereas bugs reared on leaves alone developed slowly after the second instar and died by the fifth instar. Murgantia varicolor showed a preference for leaves from juvenile plants over leaves from mature plants, and bugs reared on leaves from juvenile plants survived significantly longer than those reared on leaves from mature plants. Murgantia varicolor showed no preference for feeding on leaves of mature male versus mature female plants. In the field, M.varicolor occurred on male, female and juvenile plants. Although nymphs were less common on male than female F.pallida, their presence in substantial numbers shows that M.varicolor oviposits on both male and female plants. However, adult M.varicolor were rare on male plants. This result is supported by the inability of nymphs to complete their development on vegetative parts of F.pallida in the laboratory. These observations suggest that dioecy in F.pallida may be disruptive to populations of M.varicolor.  相似文献

The structural organization of several antagonistic networks has been demonstrated to be largely conserved through time and space even when species beta-diversity is high. This might occur either because species are replaced by others that fulfill similar network roles or because interaction probabilities are given by species relative abundances rather than by their functional traits. Alternatively, if species-specific traits are important drivers of realized interactions, any change in species composition should promote a certain degree of network structural dissimilarity. Here, we used a spatial-temporal system comprising asteraceous plants and flower head herbivores from remnants of Brazilian Cerrado to investigate whether the relationship between spatial beta-diversity of species and network structural dissimilarity changes over time. We measured species beta-diversity using Sørensen's dissimilarity index (βsor) and its components of species replacement (β-3) and richness differences (βrich). Network structural dissimilarity was estimated using three different metrics: connectance, modularity, and web asymmetry. We show that, in general, the effect of species beta-diversity on network structure was time-dependent: While some periods presented a positive relationship between spatial beta-diversity and network structural dissimilarity, others presented no significant relationship. This indicates that functionally similar species may present different turnover rates at distinct periods, and different non-exclusive processes affect plant–herbivore network organization across time.  相似文献

We studied the volatile composition and sexual morphs of Nephelium lappaceum flowers from two orchards, and investigated the choice behavior of the honey bee, Apis mellifera toward the floral extracts from both locations. Our results showed significant differences in chemical composition and sexual morphs; only the hermaphrodite flowers from the Herradero orchard produced limonene and α-pinene and had longer peduncle and sepal than flowers from the Metapa orchard; on the other hand, the hermaphrodite flowers from the Metapa orchard had longer gynoecium. In the behavioral experiment the extracts from the Herradero orchard seemed to give A. mellifera foragers better cues for orientation to food sources, perhaps due to the presence of limonene and α-pinene, which are absent in the samples from Metapa. Such differences in both orchards could affect pollinator attraction and ultimately seed set and productivity.  相似文献

The moss Syntrichia caninervis is the dominant soil bryophyte in a blackbrush (Coleogyne ramosissima) community in the southern Nevada Mojave Desert, with a mean cover of 6.3%. A survey of the 10-ha study site revealed an expressed ramet sex ratio of 14♀ : 1♂ (N = 890), with 85% of ramets not expressing sex over their life span, and an expressed population sex ratio of 40♀ : 2♂ : 1♀♂ (female : male : mixed-sex, N = 89), with 52% of populations not expressing sex. A greater incidence of sex expression was associated with shaded microsites, higher soil moisture content, and taller ramets. Shaded microsites had higher surface soil moisture levels than exposed microsites. In the exposed microhabitat, surface soil moisture was positively correlated with ramet height but not with sex expression. Male ramets and populations were restricted to shaded microhabitats, whereas female ramets and populations were found in both shaded and exposed microhabitats, suggesting gender specialization. The rarity of mature sporophytes, found in 0% of the ramets sampled and in only 3% of the populations, is probably due to the rarity of mixed-sex populations. We hypothesize that mixed-sex populations are rare because of factors relating to male rarity and that the differential cost of sex expression reduces the clonal growth capacity of male individuals.  相似文献

Intrapopulation and interpopulation variations in floral sex ratio in hermaphrodites of gynodioeciousChionographis japonica var.kurohimensis (Liliaceae) were examined. The relative ratio of male flowers to total flowers (male and perfect flowers) decreased with plant size, suggesting size-dependent gender modification. The relative ratio of male flowers per population-basis is negatively correlated with the mean number of perfect flowers. Since the number of perfect flowers proportionally increased with plant size, populations showing low maleness consist of relatively bigger plants and are considered to be in high-quality environment. On the other hand, the relative ratio of male flowers per population basis is independent of female frequency in the population. Plasticity in gender expression probably plays an important role of maintenance of gynodioecy inC. japonica var.kurohimensis.  相似文献

The effect of feeding frequency on the mechanisms of digestion in the mucosa and contents of the gastrointestinal tract of the luderick, Girella tricuspidata (Quoy and Gaimard), was determined. Use was made of the variation in utilization frequency of Enteromorpha intestinalis by C. tricuspidata fed according to two different regimes to determine the importance of these digestive mechanisms in algal digestion.
The contents of the oesophagus and stomach of fish fed ad libitum were consistently acidic whilst those from fish deprived of food were highly variable and more alkaline. The contents of the pyloric caeca. intestine and rectum were slightly alkaline in both groups.
The number of microorganisms found in the digestive tract increased with a reduction in food availability. There was no significant cellulase activity in any of the animals tested.
Amylase and lipase were found in the pyloric caeca, intestine and rectum, but were not present in the oesophagus or stomach. Lipase activities were highly variable. Although some protease was found in the posterior portion of the gut, the majority of the activity occurred in the oesophagus and stomach.
Generally, amylase, lipase, and protease activities were unaffected by a change in the feeding regime of the fish from being fed ud libitum to being fed for a period of 24 h every 5 days. It is concluded that a reduced activity of enzymes that hydrolyse algal cell contents is not the reason for the lower utilization efficiency of food-deprived fish.
It is clear that the only difference in digestive mechanisms between fish fed ad libitum and fish fed infrequently is the variation in pH of the foregut. It is considered likely that the increased acidity of the foregut of animals fed ad Iibilum facilitates hydrolysis of the algal cell walls and allows greater utilization of algae by these fish.  相似文献

In this study, interactive effects of plant competition and herbivory on plant quality and herbivore development were examined in a greenhouse experiment where cabbage plants [Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata (Brassicaceae)] were intercropped with red clover [Trifolium pratense L. (Fabaceae)]. Cabbages were grown with two red clover densities and attack rates by the root feeding herbivore the turnip root fly, Delia floralis Fall. (Diptera: Anthomyiidae). Above ground and below ground cabbage biomass was reduced through intercropping and larval damage. Intercropping also resulted in lower nitrogen and higher carbon root levels compared with levels in the roots of monocultured cabbage. Furthermore, both root nitrogen and carbon levels increased with herbivory. Root neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and lignin content increased in response to both increased plant competition and higher egg densities. For lignin, an interaction effect was observed in the form of elevated levels in intercropped plants subjected to larval damage, while levels in roots of monocultured cabbage remained unchanged. The quality changes brought about by clover competition affected D. floralis development negatively, which resulted in reduced pupal weight. In addition, increased egg density also decreased larval growth. The effects on the development of D. floralis in relation to host plant quality are discussed. Handling editor: Gimme Walter  相似文献

1 Field studies were conducted in central Sweden to establish whether two host plants with high and low suitability for pollen beetles (Meligethes aeneus Fabr. [Coleoptera: Nitidulidae] and Meligethes viridescens Fabr.) affected the parasitoid Diospilus capito Nees [Hymenoptera: Braconidae]. 2 Samples of larvae were taken from fields with plots of white mustard, Sinapis alba L. and spring rape, Brassica napus L. in 1997 and 1998. Levels of parasitism and the survival and size of D. capito were measured to determine any influence of the host plant species. Survival and weights of pollen beetles from S. alba and B. napus were also measured. 3 Levels of parasitism between 8% and 29% were recorded. There was a significantly higher likelihood of being parasitized by D. capito for beetle larvae developing on S. alba than on B. napus. We argue that semiochemical or morphological properties of plant species could be responsible for differential parasitism by D. capito. 4 Neither survival of D. capito nor parasitoid size differed from hosts developing on S. alba or B. napus. Pollen beetle emergence was the same for both plant species, but beetles that developed on S. alba weighed less than those from B. napus. Results suggest that the partial resistance of S. alba to the pollen beetle will have no negative effects on the parasitoid D. capito.  相似文献

簇花芹(Soranthus meyeri)是古尔班通古特沙漠中常见的、具雄全同株性系统的伞形科多年生早春短命植物。该文对簇花芹花期性比(两性花数/总花数)与植株大小的关系及其开花式样进行了研究, 重点对花期大小依赖的性别资源分配进行了讨论。结果表明: 2006-2008年簇花芹群体水平的性比分别为0.69 ± 0.03、0.62 ± 0.03和0.69 ± 0.02, 彼此间无显著差异( p > 0.05), 表明其性比是相对稳定的, 可能受遗传因素的控制。雄花生物量与花粉量均比两性花的小, 说明产生雄花比产生两性花所需资源少。一级复伞形花序比二级复伞形花序具有较多的两性花, 说明前者易从植株上获得资源用于增加雌性适合度; 而后者产生较多的雄花以避免在雌性功能上资源投入的浪费, 增大花展示以吸引更多传粉者来增加花粉输出总量, 提高其整体适合度。植株水平的性比与地上营养器官的生物量间呈正相关关系, 说明较大个体对雌性功能的投资较大, 雌性繁殖成功受资源限制。复伞形花序内各伞形花序几乎同时向心开放, 且所有两性花及花序均为雄性先熟, 雌雄阶段完全分离, 但一级复伞形花序比二级复伞形花序早开放约5天, 彼此开花重叠期约为1天。这些特征对于一级复伞形花序进行异株异花授粉以及植株内不同级别花序间的同株异花传粉、避免雌雄功能间的干扰具有重要意义。  相似文献

利用扫描电镜(SEM)和光镜(LM)对臭椿花序及花器官的分化和发育进行了初步研究,表明:1)臭椿花器官分化于当年的4月初,为圆锥花序;2)分化顺序为花萼原基、花冠原基、雄蕊原基和雌蕊原基。5个萼片原基的发生不同步,并且呈螺旋状发生;5个花瓣原基几乎同步发生且其生长要比雄蕊原基缓慢;雄蕊10枚,两轮排列,每轮5个原基的分化基本是同步的;雌蕊5,其分化速度较快;3)在两性花植株中,5个心皮顶端粘合形成柱头和花柱,而在雄株中,5个心皮退化,只有雄蕊原基分化出花药和花丝。本研究着重观察了臭椿中雄花及两性花发育的过程中两性花向单性花的转变。结果表明,臭椿两性花及单性花的形成在花器官的各原基上是一致的(尽管时间上有差异),雌雄蕊原基同时出现在每一个花器官分化过程中,但是,可育性结构部分的形成取决于其原基是否分化成所应有的结构:雄蕊原基分化形成花药与花丝,雌蕊原基分化形成花柱、柱头和子房。臭椿单性花的形成是由于两性花中雌蕊原基的退化所造成,其机理有待于进一步研究。  相似文献

Abstract. The endemic Hawaiian gastropod Smaragdia bryanae is a specialized marine herbivore that uses the endemic seagrass Halophila hawaiiana as both food and habitat. These small neritids, their grazing scars, and their egg capsules are found year‐round on seagrass leaves, where they feed on protoplast contents released as the sharp outer‐lateral teeth of the snail's radula puncture leaf epidermal cells; the contents of these cells are likely swept into the mouth by the long, wispy cusps of the marginal teeth. Structural differences from the typical neritid radula include elongated outer‐lateral teeth with two sharply pointed cusps, delicate marginal teeth reduced in both size and number, and a compressed central section. Snails grazed on leaves of H. hawaiiana steadily in laboratory culture, and grew and reproduced on this diet. In laboratory choice experiments, snails did not graze the thalli of any of six macroalgal species growing near seagrass where snails were collected, and strongly preferred occupying seagrass. Seagrass samples from five field sites on Oahu and one on Maui showed from 30% to 94% of leaves damaged, with 11% of the total leaf standing area grazed. Snails are smaller (mean length 2.74±0.32 mm, mean width 2.15±0.17 mm, n=217) than the width of the leaves of H. hawaiiana (mean 3.24±1.26 mm, n=790). The snails associate constantly with their host, despite the scattered distribution, small patch size, and variability of the seagrass resource, demonstrated by a sevenfold range in the leaf area index (mean 1.11±0.61 cm2 blade surface cm?2, n=31) among samples. Damage on grazed leaves (mean 8.21±7.05 mm2 per leaf, or 16.5% of leaf surface, n=511) is concentrated in the apical and central epithelia between the midrib and the marginal veins, where snails may access cells with thinner walls and few fibers. Details of the grazing interaction between these extant species in Hawai'i shed light on the ecological specialization of members of the genus Smaragdia to seagrasses over geological time.  相似文献
