In the setting of an aerobiological study of confined environments and environmental prevention of nosocomial infections, aerobiological monitoring of 22 areas in Montescano Medical Rehabilitation Centre (Pavia) was performed in three different months: February, May, and August, 1994. A Lanzoni 3000 spore trap was used for the monitoring. Examination of the results showed that, in the environments monitored, the indoor presence of fungi increased progresively over the three periods considered. The behaviour of individual genera of fungi differed. In the winter periodPenicillium andAspergillus were the most commonly encountered genera,Cladosporium was the dominant genus from the spring to the summer while the yeasts had their maximum counts in the spring morning. The use of air conditioning, combined with the low air exchange between outdoors and andoors in some of the environments certainly played a part in the low concentrations of these latter aerofungi.  相似文献

Airborne fungal spores in the coastal plain of Israel: A preliminary survey   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Airborne spores were monitored during the years 1993–1995 in three cities along the coastal plain of Israel: Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv (Ramat Aviv) and Haifa. Seasonal fluctuations in the concentration of airborne spores were recorded. The following genera of fungi were identified:Alternaria, Cladosporium, Coprinus, Curvularia, Drechslera. Diplococcum, Epicoccum, Fusarium, Leptosphaeria, Pithomyces, Puccinia, Sphacelotheca, Stemphylium andUstilago. Unidentified spores were very rare and in negligible numbers. The dominant airborne fungal spores wereCladosporium andAlternaria. The monthly variations in airborne spores, observed among the three cities, seem to be rather minor. The recorded levels of airborne spores were below the concentrations that are accepted as threshold levels for provocation of clinical responses.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative studies of atmospheric fungal spores at a chloralkali factory, Jayashree Chemicals. were made during 1993 employing culture plate and rotorod methods. A total of 57 sporulating fungal types, including three sterile mycelial forms, were recorded by the culture plate method and 51 spore types, including the hyphal fragments and unidentified spores, were recorded by the rotorod method. As to the seasonal variation, winter was found to be the greatest contributor of fungal spores as compared to the summer and rainy season. Instead, when considering the hour of the day, the peak number of fungal propagules was recorded at noon (12.00 h) followed by evening and morning values, an exception being recorded in winter months, when maximum CFUs ofCladosporium were monitored in the morning. The seasonal variation in fungal concentration and composition was found to be influenced by temperature, rainfall and relative humidity, whereas diurnal incidence was the effect of varying temperature and relative humidity during day time only. Moderate temperature and relative humidity favoured the maximum fungal spore load in the atmosphere.Cladosporium, Nigrospora, Alternaria, Lasiodiplodia, Drechslera, Pestalotia, Curvularia, Epicoccum, Aspergillus, Penicillium andChaetomium were the commonest fungal spores in the factory area.  相似文献

Airborne pollen in San Carlos de Bariloche was sampled from September to March 2001–2004 with a Hirst-type volumetric spore trap placed at a height of 15 m in a city extending from the humid forests, through the mesic forests, to the steppe. The total amount of pollen recorded varied widely from year to year. The pollen index was 4,395 in the sampling period 2001/2002; 9,055 in 2002/2003 and 2,756 in 2003/2004. The main pollen period extended from October to January. In October, pollen concentration was the highest. Sixty-six pollen types were identified. Cupressaceae and Nothofagus were the major contributors. Betula, Prunus, Pinus and Populus, the most abundant ornamental taxa in the city, also contributed to the pollen record. Pollen of Maytenus and Lomatia was representative of the mesic forest, while pollen in the lower layers of the humid forest was present in trace amounts. Cupressaceae, Nothofagus and Betula prevailed during spring (September–December), and Plantago, Rumex and Poaceae during summer (December–March). The association of daily pollen concentration and meteorological variables, temperature (mean, maximum, minimum), dew point, rainfall and wind speed, was significant. Correlations showed to be negative, with the exception of that to wind speed. The total sum of fungi spores increased from 1,771 in 2001/2002; through 8,441 in 2002/2003 to 13,782 in 2003/2004. Relative concentration rose to 29%, 48% and 84% of the total number of pollen and fungal spores recorded during each sampling period.  相似文献

Libraries and archives are keepers of expressions of human thought, from the most ancient documents written on papyrus, parchement, etc., to the new photographic and electronic supports. These materials of vegetal, animal or synthetic origin are subject to deterioration by physical agents (light, heat, humidity), chemical agents (atmospheric pollution),and biological agents (bacteria, microfungi and insects). Micro-organisms, agents of biodeterioration, as it is known, can be carried by airborne particles which can eventually settle in the dust. This paper shows the results of a preliminary quantitative and qualitative study made on potentially deteriogenic airborne fungal spores present in the dust deposited on shelves and documents of an archive's repository. The hygrothermometric parameters and the water content of the materials were also measured. The dust samples were collected with Swab Millipore samplers, using electrostatic attraction. This kind of sampler, originally destined for the microbiological analysis of water and, in extension, used to isolate bacteria from the book-material, was successfully also used in this case of dust sampling. Compared with the data resulting from the bibliography on dust, the use of Swabs allowed the spores present in the dust on books and shelves to be isolated. Abstract. Adult female mosquito populations were monitored at weekly intervals during spring-autumn (November-March) for 4 years (1991-95) using dry-ice-baited light traps at forty sites in the Murray Valley of Victoria, Australia. Among twenty species of mosquitoes collected, Culex annulirostriswas the most abundant (66.6 ± 9.3%) followed by Cx australicus(15.3 ± 7.7%). From a total of 476, 682 mosquitoes collected, nearly all were females and only 1295 (0.27%) were males. Mosquito population densities were generally higher in 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons than in 1991-92 and 1994-95 seasons. Greatest densities of Cx annulirostrisand Cx australicusoccurred in 1992-93, coinciding with outbreaks of Ross River (RR) and Barman Forest (BF) arboviruses causing human polyarthritis. In the majority of shires, Cx australicuswas the predominant species from spring to early summer (November and December), then was replaced by Cx annulirostrisfrom mid-summer to autumn (January-April). In three shires, Aedes bancroftianusand Ae.sagaxpredominated during the early part of the season. Densities of both Cx annulirostrisand Cx australicuswere related to temperature. Cx australicusadults were found to be trapped when the mean ambient temperature exceeded 6d?C, with peak population recorded at 20d?C. Cx annulirostrisadult density increased when the mean temperature rose above 12d?C, reaching a peak during February and March when temperature exceeded 25d?C. Cx annulirostrisdeclined rapidly from April onwards, with no adult activity evident from May to November. Population densities of Aedesspp. were generally less than reported from earlier studies, possibly due to lower rainfall in spring and summer as well as reduced flood irrigation practices. In each year, a significant correlation was detected between Cx annulirostrisdensity and RR virus incidence in humans. As Cx annulirostrisis the predominant local mosquito species and feeds on a wide spectrum of hosts including man, it seems likely that Cx annulirostrisis the major vector of RR in the inland Murray Valley region.  相似文献

Because fungal spore emission intensity varies throughout the year and even throughout the day, study of the hourly distribution is an important aspect of aerobiological monitoring. The objective of this work was to determine seasonal and intradiurnal variation of allergenic airborne fungal spores in urban and rural areas. The aerobiological study was performed from 2005 to 2007 using Hirst-type volumetric spore traps. Fungal spore types (Cladosporium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus/Penicillium) were selected according to their allergenic capacity and their frequency in the atmosphere. Cladosporium was the most frequent fungal spore in both locations, together with Alternaria; its concentration was higher during summer whereas Aspergillus/Penicillium was more abundant during autumn. Alternaria and Cladosporium maximum daily spore concentration was reached from 16.00 to 20.00 h. Aspergillus/Penicillium spore distribution differed in the two locations, and although it was difficult to establish a distribution pattern the highest concentration were found during the night. Determination of periods of high concentration may help allergic patients to avoid the daily periods when the allergen concentration is highest.  相似文献

A Burkard spore trap was used to monitor daily fungal spore counts in the atmosphere of Melbourne (Australia) between October 1991 and December 1994. Annual total spore counts varied widely (range 345 770 in 1994 to 1 106 037 in 1992), of which approximately half were identified asCladosporium sp. and only about 1%Alternaria sp. Highest daily total spore counts were recorded late-summer through to mid-winter, probably corresponding to senescence of annual grasses and leaf fall. Spore counts were negatively correlated with rainfall (P<0.05), significantly correlated with average temperature (P<0.001), and showed a highly significant linear relationship with cumulative temperature throughout the year.  相似文献

Pathogens and other symbiotic fungi that infect above‐ground plant parts commonly disperse as airborne spores. Here we present diel patterns of the density of airborne fungal spores in the canopy and understory of a tropical rain forest. Spores were 52‐fold more abundant in the understory than in the canopy. Additionally, spores were 5‐ to 35‐fold more abundant at night than during the day, associated with environmental conditions conducive to germination and plant infection.  相似文献

Summary The herds and weeds pollen (NAP) and spores of Buenos Aires city were collected using a Tauber trap from July 1989 to June 1990. A high NAP pollen production period was found from October to March, reaching an annual peak in October. The NAP fraction is dominated by Compositae, Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthoideae. Spores are scarce along the year and they are mainly represented by Bryophytes. From the comparison of trees and shrubs pollen content (AP), NAP and Spores fractions, three aeropalynological seasons could be described: An AP Season with dominance of trees and shrubs, from July to October; a NAP Season with dominance of herbs and weeds, from November to April, and a Spore Season from May to June.  相似文献

Little research has been carried out in London concerning fungal spore prevalence yet this information may help to elucidate geographical patterns of asthma and hay fever. Although many types of spore reach peak concentrations outdoors in late-summer, the incidences in the indoor environment may be more important through the winter because of heating and poor ventilation. Daily average concentrations of fungal spores in the ambient atmosphere were monitored with a Burkard volumetric spore trap on an exposed roof in North London from autumn 1991 until the summer of 1992. Indoor spore measurements were taken in 19 homes in the vicinity through the winter months, both by direct air sampling using a portable Burkard sampler and by dust culture. Trends in the occurrence and concentrations of fungal spores indoors and outdoors were examined. Relationships between the abundance of selected allergenic fungi and features of the houses were analysed including age of dwelling, dampness, cleanliness and presence of pets.Aspergillus andPenicillium were the most frequently occurring spore types in the homes. Overall, high spore incidence was associated with dampness and dust accumulation. The outdoor spore samples revealed generally low concentrations through the winter until March when concentrations of many types includingCladosporium, Epicoccum andAlternaria increased in abundance in response to the warmer weather. Even during the late-spring and early-summer, concentrations of most fungal spores were notably below those reported for rural sites.  相似文献

Humans remove considerable amounts of water from rivers in Australia's Murray-Darling Basin. As a result, many wetlands no longer flood for as long or as frequently as they used to. Even though the extent of ecological damage is becoming better understood, the policies which contributed to increased water use are not well known. The Border Rivers Region of Australia provides an opportunity to more closely examine these issues. Water use rose by more than 2,700% between 1969 and 1991, mostly to irrigate cotton crops. Between 1969 and 1984, only about 5% of the water, measured at Goondiwindi on the main river channel of the Macintyre River, was used for irrigation. Water use to irrigate cotton increased to 60–69% of this measure in the period 1992–1995, which included two extremely dry years. This development was driven primarily by Governments through building dams. The ecological and economic costs of such changes were never adequately measured or forecasted. The key question for the future is whether Government should insist on proponents paying these costs or continue to promote and build infrastructure for water resource developments. Whatever the verdict, there must be better recognition of the economic and ecological costs through transparent processes of environmental assessment. This includes the economic benefits of riverine and wetland conservation. In addition, governmental environment protection and conservation agencies should participate more fully in decisions of water resource management if there is to be balance between resource exploitation and protection.  相似文献

This paper explores the role of recreational sport as a means and marker of social integration by analysing the lived experiences of Somali people from refugee backgrounds with sport. Drawing on a three-year multi-sided ethnography, the paper examines the extent to and ways in which participation in sport contributes to Somali Australians' bonding, bridging, and linking social capital. It is shown how social bonds and bridges developed in the sports context assist in the (re)building of community networks that have been eroded by war and displacement. Sport's contribution to social capital should however be neither overstated nor over-generalized. Bridging social capital in sport is relatively weak and few bridges are established between Somalis and the host community. Negative social encounters such as discrimination and aggression can highlight and reinforce group boundaries. Access to and use of linking social capital is also unequally distributed across gender, age, ethnic, and socio-economic lines.  相似文献

Over the past decade, umbilical cord blood (UCB) has routinely been used as a source of haematopoietic stem cells for allogeneic stem cell transplants in the treatment of a range of malignant and non-malignant conditions affecting children and adults. UCB banks are a necessary part of the UCB transplant program, but their establishment has raised a number of important scientific, ethical and political issues. This paper examines the scientific and clinical evidence that has provided the basis for the establishment of UCB banks. We also discuss the major ethical issues that UCB banks raise, including ownership of cord blood, processes for obtaining consent for its collection and storage, and confidentiality. Finally, we review other concerns about commercial non-altruistic banking, including concerns about social justice, equity of access and equity of care.  相似文献

Stream restoration has become a multibillion dollar industry worldwide, yet there are few clear success stories and the scientific basis for effective stream restoration remains uncertain. We compiled data on completed river restoration projects from four management authorities in Victoria, Australia, to examine how the available data could inform the science of restoration ecology in rivers, and thus improve future restoration efforts. We found that existing data sources are limited and much historical information has been lost through industry restructuring and poor data archiving. Examining records for 2,247 restoration projects, we found that riparian management projects were the most common, followed by bank stabilization and in‐stream habitat improvement. Only 14% of the project records indicated that some form of monitoring was carried out. It is evident that overall there is little scientific guidance and little or no monitoring and evaluation of the projects for which we had information. However, recent advances with mandatory, statewide reporting and an increased emphasis on project design and monitoring strongly suggest that the design, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of stream restoration projects have improved in recent years and will continue to do so.  相似文献

Abstract  Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera: non-biting midges) were surveyed at five shallow riffle stations along the estuarine gradient of the Clyde River, southern New South Wales (35°45'S, 150°15'E). Benthic populations were sampled seasonally between April 2001 and January 2002, between an uppermost fully fresh station and 7 km south of the tidal limit at Shallow Crossing, encompassing a 23 km stretch. Biological structure and integrity of chironomid assemblages, which are essentially unknown in eastern Australia's estuarine environments, were elucidated. Assemblages were diverse: from 5732 chironomid larvae, 45 species belonging to four subfamilies were identified from riffles. All chironomid assemblages were strongly structured and non-random with respect to spatial position along the salinity gradient although relatively random with respect to temporal shifts between the five seasonal samples. Generally, the salinity gradient had strong effects on assemblage composition but no discrete brackish fauna was identifiable, and the abundance of many species declined gradually with distance from the freshest station. Dominant taxa in the brackish zone were Parakiefferiella ' variegatus ' and two species of Cladotanytarsus . Notably, the little-known Semiocladius crassipennis Skuse (Orthocladiinae) was abundant at the most marine-influenced station. Taxa present exclusively in freshwaters included several Tanypodinae notably absent from sites below Shallow Crossing at salinities normally tolerated in athalassic waters. Other species restricted to freshwaters included Nanocladius sp., Demicryptochironomus (Irmakia) sp., Polypedilum vespertinus (Skuse), Zavrelliella fuscoguttata (Kieffer), Riethia stictoptera (Kieffer) and Podonomopsis sp.  相似文献

A high incidence of ligula (mouthpart) deformities is reported for the larvae of Procladius paludicola Skuse (Diptera: Chironomidae) collected from sites on the Murray and Darling Rivers, Australia. This is the first report of deformities in Australian freshwater insects, and is discussed in relation to known toxic pollutants within the catchment.  相似文献
