Synopsis Distribution of attachment sites varies with the species of lamprey being considered. Large anadromous species (Petromyzon marinus and Lampetra tridentata) tend to attach ventrally, especially near the pectoral fins, while smaller freshwater species in shallow habitats (Ichthyomyzon castaneus and I. unicuspis) and species that feed on muscle tissue (Lampetra ayresi) tend to attach dorsally. Catostomids tend to be attacked on the head and, by the Ichthyomyzon species, on the paired fins. Distribution of attachments by P. marinus in laboratory studies may be affected by tank size. Attachments to the head and pectoral regions are probably associated with greater host mortality rates and may be underrepresented in field samples. Attachments to the pectoral region appear to combine low costs, in terms of handling time prior to feeding, with greater rates of energy intake once feeding has been initiated. Dorsal attachments by species that inhabit relatively shallow rivers and streams may be a compromise to avoid abrasion against the bottom. A consequence of dorsal attachments may be a reduced impact on host populations through prolonged attachments to individual hosts and reduced attack rates.  相似文献

The subcellular distribution and kinetic properties of carbonic anhydrase were examined in red blood cells and gills of the lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, a primitive agnathan, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, a modern teleost, in relation to the evolution of rapid Cl/HCO 3 exchange in the membrane of red blood cells. In the lamprey, which either lacks or has minimal red cell Cl/HCO 3 exchange, there has been no compensatory incorporation of carbonic anhydrase into the membrane fraction of either the red cell or the gill. Carbonic anhydrase activity in red cells is exclusively cytoplasmic, and the single isozyme displays kinetic properties typical of the type I, slow turnover, isozyme. In the red blood cells of the trout, however, which possess high amounts of the band-3 Cl/HCO 3 exchange protein, the single carbonic anhydrase isozyme appears to be kinetically similar to the type II, fast turnover, isozyme. Genetic evidence for a trimeric structure for purine nucleoside phosphorylase in the brook lamprey is presented. This enzyme is encoded by a single locus with two alleles segregating at frequencies of 0.98 and 0.02 in a Welsh population. Synopsis A quantitative energetics model of feeding and growth by parasitic lampreys was used to assess overall rates of net energy intake under alternate feeding strategies and varying host availability. Our early attempts to predict optimal feeding behavior focused on the duration of attachment to the host, but model simulations have revealed that optima over this variable may be so flat that, as in one case, a deviation of nearly 30% from the optimal attachment time results in only a 3% decrease in the rate of net energy intake. This may contribute to the great variability that appears characteristic of feeding by parasitic lampreys. Further simulations have suggested that, because host blood is to some extent a renewable resource, lampreys should extend host survival when alternate hosts are scarce by removing blood at reduced rates. In other words, maximization of instantaneous rate of net energy intake is not equivalent to maximization of long term gain. Thus, in predicting optimal lamprey feeding behavior, it is necessary to consider simultaneously both attachment time and rate of host blood removal. Behavioral or evolutionary adjustment of these variables can have important consequences with respect to lamprey growth rates, the functional response of lampreys to changing host densities, mortality rates of host populations, and the expression of other lamprey behavioral traits.  相似文献

Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) is a promising agent for successful Tetranychus urticae Koch control through conservation techniques, in strawberry crops in La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina). In prey–predator interaction, initial relative densities have an important effect on system dynamics. The economic threshold level (ETL) used for this pest in the present study was 50 active mites per leaflet. In our laboratory experiments, initial T. urticae to N. californicus ratio had a significant effect on the population abundance of T. urticae at a 7-day period. When pest/predator ratio was 5/1 (at initial pest densities from 5 to 15 females/leaflet) the final number of active T. urticae/leaflet was significantly lower than the ETL, while at 20 females/leaflet this number did not differ from the ETL. At 7.5/1 ratio, the final number of active T. urticae/leaflet, at initial pest densities from 5 to 15 females/leaflet, reached the ETL without surpassing it. At 10/1 and 15/1 ratios, pest densities exceeded the ETL only at 15 initial T. urticae/leaflet. Most greenhouse and field observations were consistent with the predictions of a graphical model based on experimental results. This predator was very effective in limiting pest densities at a 7-day period and within the range of pest–predator ratios and absolute densities used in this study. Conservation of N. californicus promoting favorable pest/predator ratios may result in early control of T. urticae.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the developmental duration ofCryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant was quantified by deriving a regression equation for each developmental stage as well as the total life cycle. While the duration of life stages was shorter during summer and longer during winter, the optimum constant temperature for maximal development was found to be 30°C. The adult longevity was extended when reared at 20°C than at 30°C and ambient temperature. The longevity of adults was longer when maintained on grape mealybugMaconellicoccus hirsutus (Green) than on honey and when maintained at 20°C. The fecundity of the predator was higher at 30°C than at 20°C. Eventhough the adults could survive at 10°C, the productive capacity was impaired.   相似文献

We determined the effects of number of prey and the area over which they were distributed on the number of prey eaten and the production efficiency ofMetasyrphus corollae (F.) (formelySyrphus corollae F.) larvae. We hypothesized that, for a given number of prey offered per day, increased plant size would reduce foraging efficiency and production efficiency. Also, increased prey number was expected to increase production efficiency. Individual larvae were offered 10, 20, 40 or 60 pea aphids each day on plants with 7.5, 35 or 73 cm2 surface area. When more aphids were offered, larvae ofM. corollae killed more of them but left larger aphid carcasses. Foraging efficiency (percentage of available aphids eaten) declined as aphid abundance and plant size increased. Foraging costs were not decreased by increasing prey density and therefore production efficiency was not increased.
Résumé Les effets du nombre de proies et de la surface sur laquelle elles ont été distribuées, sur le nombre de proies mangées et sur le rendement de la production des larves deMetasyrphus corollae (F.) ont été déterminés. Nous avons supposé que, pour un nombre donné de proies offertes par jour, le rendement de la quête alimentaire et de la production diminueraient avec l'augmentation de la taille de la plante. De même, on supposait que le nombre croissant de proies augmentait le rendement de la production. On offrait chaque jour à des larves individuelles 10, 20, 40 ou 50 aphides du pois, sur des plantes dont la surface était 7,5, 35 ou 73 cm2. Quand on offrait plus d'aphides, les larves deM. corollae les tuaient, mais elles laissaient alors de plus gros cadavres. Le rendement de la quête alimentaire (pourcentage d'aphides disponibles mangés) diminuait lorsque l'abondance des aphides et la taille de la plante augmentaient. Les couts de la quête alimentaire n'étaient pas réduits par l'augmentation du nombre de proies et ainsi le rendement de la production n'était pas augmenté.

Many solitary ground-nesting wasps in the families Pompilidae and Sphecidae excavate nests after capturing prey for provisions. These wasps generally cache their immobilized prey temporarily during nest excavation, frequently by suspending the prey in a plant (aerial caching). Here I test the hypothesis that aerial caching by Ammophila spp. wasps (Sphecidae) functions to reduce prey theft by generalist predators, Formica spp. ants. Foraging ants removed baits placed on the ground more rapidly than baits suspended in plants; mean half-lives for ground and aerial baits were 14.5 and 145.7 min, respectively (mean values for experiments 1–3). Ant foraging activity decreased during the midday. Ant interference with nesting activities of Ammophila spp. also decreased during the midday, paralleling observed fluctuations in ant foraging activity.  相似文献

Summary Root proliferation in nutrient-rich soil patches is an important mechanism facilitating nutrient capture by plants. Although the phenomenon of root proliferation is well documented, the specific timing of this proliferation has not been investigated. We studied the timing and degree of root proliferation for three perennial species common to the Great Basin region of North America: a shrub, Artemisia tridentata, a native tussock grass, Agropyron spicatum, and an introduced tussock grass, Agropyron desertorum. One day after we applied nutrient solution to small soil patches, the mean relative growth rate of Agropyron desertorum roots in these soil patches was two to four times greater than for roots of the same plants in soil patches reated with distilled water. Most of the increased root growth came from thin, laterally branching roots within the patches. This rapid and striking root proliferation by Agropyron desertorum occurred in response to N-P-K enrichment as well as to P or N enrichment alone. A less competitive bunchgrass, Agrophyron spicatum, showed no tendency to proliferate roots in enriched soil patches during these two-week experiments. The shrub Artemisia tridentata proliferated roots within one day of initial solution injection in the N-enrichment experiment, but root proliferation of this species was more gradual and less consistent in the N-P-K and P-enrichment experiments, respectively. The ability of Agropyron desertorum to proliferate roots rapidly may partly explain both its general competitive success and its superior ability to exploit soil nutrients compared to Agropyron spicatum in Great Basin rangelands of North America.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of foraging experiences on the residence time of Neoseiulus womersleyi in a currently inhabited prey (Tetranychus urticae) patch. Satiated predators that had experienced starvation stayed longer in a current patch than those that had not experienced starvation. Satiated predators that had experienced a prey-rich patch showed approximately the same residence time in the current patch irrespective of the number of prey therein. By contrast, satiated predators that had experienced a prey-poor patch stayed longer in a current patch of high prey density than in one of low prey density. N. womersleyi appears to determine residence time in the current patch based on foraging experiences together with the quantity of prey in the current patch.  相似文献

Summary Selection might favor group foraging and social feeding when prey are distributed in patches that do not last long enough for a solitary individual to consume more than a small fraction of them (Pulliam and Millikan 1982; Pulliam and Caraco 1984). Here we considered the foraging behavior of a social spider, Anelosimus eximius, in light of this ephemeral resource hypothesis. This species builds large webs in which members cooperate to capture a wide variety of different sizes and types of prey, many of which are very large. The capture success of this species was very high across all prey sizes, presumably due to the fact that they foraged in groups. Group consumption times in natural colonies for all prey larger than five mm were less than the time that dead insects remained on the plastic sheets that we used as artificial webs. Solitary consumption estimates, calculated from the rate at which laboratory individuals extracted insect biomass while feeding, were the same as the residence times of insects on artificial webs in the field for insects between 6 and 15 mm in length and were significantly longer than the persistence of insects on plastic sheets for all larger insects. Large prey, that contribute substantially to colony energy supplies, appeared to be ephemeral resources for these spiders that could not be consumed by a single spider in the time they were available. These factors made the food intake of one spider in a group less sensitive to scavenging by others and could act to reinforce the social system of this species.  相似文献

Among most nonhuman primates, juveniles must acquire most of their solid food independently. Information gleaned from adults results from efforts initiated by the juveniles. Donation of food or foraging information by adults to immatures is rare among apes and virtually unknown among monkeys. We report 3 observations in which wild adult golden lion tamarins appear to have directed their immature offspring to a location where a hidden prey item was located. According to the definition of Caro and Hauser (1992), the tamarins were tutoring their young.  相似文献

We studied the distribution and abundance of drifting embryonic and larval fishes and lampreys in the Smith and Van Duzen rivers of northern California, U.S.A. We collected seven fish species in four families and at least one lamprey species in the drift. All taxa drifted almost exclusively at night. Sculpins, Cottus aleuticus and C. asper, outnumbered all other taxa, comprising 63% of the catch in the Van Duzen River and 90% of the catch in the Smith River. We estimated that sculpin drift reached 3×107 individualsh–1 during the relatively high flow period from late winter through early summer. Most sculpin in these two rivers appeared to drift to the estuaries; we estimated 2.5×109 sculpin embryos and larvae reached the Smith River estuary in 1995. In contrast to the sculpins, the patterns in the drift of other taxa suggest limited transport to the estuaries. Suckers, Catostomus occidentalis in the Van Duzen River, C. rimiculus in the Smith River, threespine stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, and lamprey, Lampetra tridentata and possibly L. richardsoni, drifted at much lower rates and later in the year than sculpins. In the Van Duzen River, drift appeared to serve as a dispersal mechanism for only one of three introduced cyprinids. California roach, Lavinia symmetricus, drifted at low rates throughout the summer while we captured only seven Sacramento pikeminnow, Ptychocheilus grandis, and no speckled dace, Rhynichthys osculus. The information gathered on the drift of early life history phases is germane to both the conservation of native fishes and management of non-indigenous species in coastal rivers.  相似文献

Apparent constancy in the ratio of predator species to prey species has been offered as evidence that ecological communities are structured by interspecific interactions. If significantly different from random expectation, this effect would be one of the few sound pieces of evidence for community structure. The evidence was re-evaluated by using the data from previous studies to form species pools, and forming simulated communities by drawing species at random from these pools (with replacement). Using a correlation coefficient (number of predator species versus number of prey species), and also the statistic used by the original workers (where different), the observed predator:prey correlation was compared to that for the random communities. In five studies, the observed predator:prey ratio was not significantly different from random expectation. In the only two studies where there was significant departure from the null model, it was with more variation in the ratio than expected on a random basis. It is concluded that there is as yet no evidence for near-constant predator:prey ratios.  相似文献

Synopsis This study deals with the daily activity rhythm and its change in a loath,Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, by season and age. We set traps in an irrigation creek and ditches around the paddy fields near Nara city every month for 2 years. The fish appeared in spring, declined in early summer, and increased in mid-summer again, and disappeared in late autumn. The number of fish captured at night was greater than that during the daytime in summer. There were some differences in the daily rhythms by sex and age. Nocturnal activities of males and immatures were more prominent than those of females. Younger generation were more nocturnally active than elders in summer. Changes in the daily activity rhythms of the loath are possibly adaptive to unstable environments around paddy fields.  相似文献

Summary During the pollen season, a daily account of airborne pollen is reported by radio and newpapers in Denmark as «Today's pollen count». The Aerobiological Group under the Danish Asthma and Allergy association is responsible for the daily identification and counting of pollen. In 1984 the Group set up a trial to investigate the reproducibility of the pollen count.Three trained pollen counters independently examined the same specimens from two Burkard pollen traps. The traps were located on the roof of the Meterological Institute in Copenhagen 15 meters above ground level in the northern outskirts of central Copenhagen. This is the usual sampling site. Specimens from each trap from 20 days during the grass pollen season were selected. Four species groups were identified in sufficient numbers for statistical analysis. These were, in order of occurrence, spruce/pine (Picea/Pinus), grass (Poaceae), nettle (Urtica) and mugwort (Artemisia).Identification of sources of variation and assessment of their relative importance were carried out using variance components models. A detailed account of the method is given.Qualitatively equivalent conclusions were reached for each group: i) The expected seasonal variation was identified; ii) The counters contributed significantly to the variation of pollen counts; iii) The traps did not contribute to the variance, but a day-trap interaction was identified. This interaction was interpreted. as a problem of instrumental variation over time of traps of variation in meteorological conditions; iv) The total variance was larger than originally expected. The relative uncertainty was greater than 50 per cent.The variance of the daily pollen count cannot be reduced much by reducing counter variation or day-trap interaction. The variation among pollen counters is small, and the day-trap interaction is difficult to fully comprehend. The basic measurement error can be reduced by examining a larger area of each specimen. Although this implies a greater cost, it is probably the most effective method of reducing the uncertainty of «Today's pollen count».  相似文献

Semiarid areas in the US have realized extensive and persistent exotic plant invasions. Exotics may succeed in arid regions by extracting soil water at different times or from different depths than native plants, but little data is available to test this hypothesis. Using estimates of root mass, gravimetric soil water, soil-water potential, and stable isotope ratios in soil and plant tissues, we determined water-use patterns of exotic and native plant species in exotic- and native-dominated communities in Washington State, USA. Exotic and native communities both extracted 12 ± 2 cm of water from the top 120 cm of soil during the growing season. Exotic communities, however, shifted the timing of water use by extracting surface (0–15 cm) soil water early in the growing season (i.e., April to May) before native plants were active, and by extracting deep (0–120 cm) soil water late in the growing season (i.e., June to July) after natives had undergone seasonal senescence. We found that δ 18O values of water in exotic annuals (e.g., −11.8 ± 0.4 ‰ for Bromus tectorum L.) were similar to δ 18O values of surface soil water (e.g., −13.3 ± 1.4 ‰ at −15 cm) suggesting that transpiration by these species explained early season, surface water use in exotic communities. We also found that δ 18O values of water in taprooted exotics (e.g., −17.4 ± 0.3 ‰ for Centaurea diffusa Lam.) were similar to δ 18O values of deep soil water (e.g., −18.4 ± 0.1 ‰ at −120 cm) suggesting that transpiration by these species explained late season, deep water use. The combination of early-season, shallow water-use by exotic winter-actives and late-season, deep water-use by taprooted perennials potentially explains how exotic communities resist establishment of native species that largely extracted soil water only in the middle of the growing season (i.e., May to June). Early season irrigation or the planting of natives with established root systems may allow native plant restoration.  相似文献

动物对夜栖地选择的灵活程度是其分布和扩散的重要因素之一。钳嘴鹳(Anastomus oscitans)为中国新分布种,要了解其扩散趋势,掌握其夜栖地需求至关重要。2015年11月至2018年7月在云南蒙自坝区,使用卫星跟踪技术对6只钳嘴鹳进行了夜栖地利用和夜栖树选择研究,结果表明:(1)钳嘴鹳可以在多种生境中夜栖,包括林地、沼泽、岛屿等。从群体水平上分析,钳嘴鹳主要夜栖于沼泽中,利用率为(51.19±12.34)%,其次为林地(31.55±11.34)%和岛屿(17.26±5.70)%;从个体水平上来看,不同钳嘴鹳的夜栖地利用方式差异较大,其中4只主要利用沼泽,而另外2只主要利用林地;(2)随机森林分析表明:影响钳嘴鹳夜栖树选择的首要因子为距觅食地距离,其次为树高、地径和最低枝高度,而人为干扰因子的影响较弱。综合来看,钳嘴鹳对夜栖地类型以及夜栖树均表现出了极强的适应性和可塑性,这可能是其能够快速扩散的重要原因之一。同时也表明夜栖树并不能成为一个有力的限制因子,钳嘴鹳有可能继续向国内的南方湿地区扩散。  相似文献

The responses of hagfish (Myxine glutinosa) and lamprey (Lampetra fluviatilis and Petromyzon marinus) erythrocytes to osmotic swelling in hypoosmotic medium and to acid-base disturbances induced by ammonium chloride prepulse were studied. The erythrocytes of hagfish regulated neither cell volume after osmotic swelling nor intracellular pH after acidification. In contrast, the erythrocytes of lamprey lost potassium and chloride after osmotic swelling, whereby their volume recovered. Furthermore, the red cell pH of lamprey recovered from experimental acidification in a nominally bicarbonate-free medium in the presence of sodium, confirming that the pathway involved is sodium/proton exchange.Abbreviation DMO 5,5-dimethyloxazolidine-2,4-dione  相似文献
