Understanding Plant Development and Stress Responses through Integrative Approaches

As the name reflects, integrative plant biology is the core topic of JIPB. In the past few years JIPB has been pursuing the development of this area, to assist the scientific community to bring together all possible research tools to understand plant growth, development and stress responses in micro- and macro-scales. As part of these efforts, JIPB and Yantai University organized the 1st International Symposium on Integrative Plant Biology in the seaside town of Yantai during August 10-12,2009 (Figure 1). The symposium was co-sponsored by Botanical Society of China, Chinese Society for Cell Biology, Genetics Society of China, and Chinese Society for Plant Physiology.     

A bold step toward 2012: JIPB's 2011 Editorial Board Meeting report

The 2011 JIPB Editorial Board Meeting,which coincided with the 2011 International Symposium on Integrative Plant Biology,was held at Lanzhou University,China,on August 26,2011.Over thirty editors were in attendance for this extremely productive event (Figure 1).The symposium,jointly organized by JIPB,Lanzhou University and four Chinese societies involved in plant science research,the Chinese Society for Cell Biology,Botanical Society of China,Genetics Society of China,and Chinese Society for Plant Physiology,drew nearly 400 participants from all over China and abroad.     

Future Prospects: Scientific Quality Relies on the Critical Reviews from Our Peers

From Executive Editor to Editor-in-Chief is a big jump for me, and means many more responsibilities.I could feel the pressure on my shoulders;from the hopes of my predecessors,my colleagues, and the board members. As a journal with a 57-year history,JIPB has built its credit over the years,publishing many original works in both Chinese and English.However,in the international scientific community,JIPB is still a minor player, especially under the current not-so-healthy impact factor-driven publishing environment.

Zhengli Li （Cheng-Lee Lee） 1918-2009

Professor Zhengli Li (Cheng-Lee Lee), a well-known botanist in China, former deputy Editor-in-Chief (1979-1987) of Acta Botanica Sinica (predecessor of JIPB) and Professor of Peking University, passed away at the age of 91 in Beijing on 22 SeDtember 2009.     

In Remembrance: Professor Qian Ying-Qian(1932-2010)

Professor Qian Ying-Qian,a renowned Chinese plant biologist and a member of the editorial board of Acta Botanica Sinica(predecessor of JIPB)1989-1993,passed away in Beijing on April 20,2010 at the age of 78.Professor Qian was a former Secretary-General(1978-1988),and Vice President of the Chinese Botanical Society(1988-1999).

Celebrating Plant Cells： A Special Issue on Plant Cell Biology

A special issue on plant cell biology is long overdue for JIPB! In the last two decades or so, the plant biology community has been thrilled by explosive discoveries regarding the molecular and genetic basis of plant growth, development, and responses to the environment, largely owing to recent maturation of model systems like Arabidopsis thaliana and the rice Oryza sativa, as well as the rapid development of high throughput technologies associated with qenomics and proteomics.     

QTL pyramiding for producing nutritious and safe rice grains

正Breeding of rice varieties that are enriched with essential micronutrients and simultaneously have reduced levels of toxic elements in grains is largely unexplored in rice breeding practice. In this issue of JIPB, Liu et al.(2020)developed two rice lines with a low level of cadmium and simultaneously high levels of zinc or selenium accumulation in the grains, thus providing elite genetic materials for breeding rice varieties that are important for addressing mineral malnutrition and ensuring food safety.m entary

Barrels XXVIII take the Windy City by storm

The 28th annual Barrels meeting was held prior to the Society for Neuroscience meeting in October 2015 at the Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago, Illinois. The meeting brought together researchers focused on the rodent sensorimotor system. The meeting focused on modern techniques to decipher cortical circuits, social interactions among rodents, and decision-making. The meeting allowed investigators to share their work via short talks, poster presentations, and a data blitz.     

Interventional cardiology and general cardiology: divided by a common speciality? From George Bernard Shaw. America and England are two countries divided by a common language.

For a couple of years now, the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) consists of two separate meetings: the conventional ACC meeting and the SCAI-ACCi2 (Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions) meeting. The SCAI-ACCi2 meeting is specifically intended for interventional cardiologists and in order to attend the meeting one has to pay either a special entrance fee for this meeting or an additional fee to attend both meetings. Even Fellows of the ACC are not allowed into this dedicated interventional meeting (unless they pay the additional entrance fee). At the ACC.08 meeting in Chicago this year, the general cardiologist (ACC.08) could be recognised by a blue badge and the interventional cardiologist by a yellow badge (SCAI.ACCi2).     

Barrels XXX meeting report: Barrels in Baltimore

The Barrels meeting annually brings together researchers focused on the rodent whisker to cortical barrel system prior to the Society for Neuroscience meeting. The 2017 meeting focused on the classification of cortical interneurons, the role interneurons have in shaping brain dynamics, and finally on the circuitry underlying oral sensations. The meeting highlighted the latest advancements in this rapidly advancing field.

Plasmodium post-genomics: an update

The concept behind the first Molecular Approaches to Malaria meeting, held 1-5 February 2000 in Lorne, Australia, was ahead of its time; to convene a meeting of malaria researchers, database developers and genomics scientists, and to discuss how genomic sciences and their relevant disciplines could be applied to solve important problems in malaria research. The success of the second Molecular Approaches to Malaria meeting, held 1-5 February 2004 in the same place, together with the influence of genomics on malaria research, is testament to the vision that the organizers had at the first meeting. This review attempts to capture some of the current efforts in the post-genomics era of malaria research and highlights the approaches discussed at the Molecular Approaches to Malaria 2004 meeting.
