Dual lattice model of the evolution of facultative symbiosis with continuous Prisoner's Dilemma game
Hideo Ezoe 《Journal of theoretical biology》2009,259(4):744-750
Mutualism is ubiquitous in nature and is thought to have played a key role in the history of life. However, how mutualism could evolve despite being prone to unilateral exploitation is a puzzling question in evolutionary ecology. Some theoretical studies have shown that spatial structure of habitat can facilitate the emergence and maintenance of mutualism. However, they are based on the simple assumption that the trait in question is discrete: each individual is either a mutualist or a non-mutualist. In this article I develop a simple simulation model of coevolution of facultative symbiosis using a one-shot continuous Prisoner's Dilemma game to investigate the evolutionary dynamics of mutualism between two species. In this model I assume continuous traits for both species from -1 (fully deceptive) to 1 (fully cooperative). The habitat has a dual-lattice structure, each layer is inhabited by one species. Interspecific interaction is restricted between two corresponding sites of the two layers. Without limitation on the magnitude of a single mutation, I find that mutualism can arise and persist when the intrinsic reproduction rate is low (but is above a threshold) and the benefit/cost ratio of the cooperative strategy is large, which is consistent with Yamamura et al. [2004. Evolution of mutualism through spatial effects. J. Theor. Biol. 226, 421-428]. In these cases, extreme antagonism often evolves starting from a neutral population that seems nearly stable, but once mutualism arises, the cooperative individuals quickly increase and both the populations eventually become mutualistic on average, although they are polymorphic. However, when the effect of a single mutation was limited to be small, extreme antagonism is much likely to dominate unless the intrinsic reproduction rate is low. When only one species is allowed to evolve, mutualism arises when the initial strategy of the other species is cooperative. Otherwise, excessive deception evolves in the former, and the latter often becomes driven to extinction. 相似文献

Kin selection and reciprocal cooperation provide two candidate explanations for the evolution of cooperation. Models of the evolution of cooperation have typically focussed on one or the other mechanism, despite claims that kin selection could pave the way for the evolution of reciprocal cooperation. We describe a computer simulation model that explicitly supports both kin selection and reciprocal cooperation. The model simulates a viscous population of discrete individuals with social interaction taking the form of the Prisoner's Dilemma and selection acting on performance in these interactions. We recount how the analytical and empirical study of this model led to the conclusion that kin selection may actually inhibit the evolution of effective strategies for establishing reciprocal cooperation. 相似文献

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an extensively studied human pathogen responsible for a wide variety of infections. Dictyostelium discoideum is a model host organism employed to study many facets of the complex interactions between phagocytic cells and bacteria. Historically, a non-pathogenic strain of K. pneumoniae has been used to feed Dictyostelium amoebae, and more recently to study cellular mechanisms involved in bacterial recognition, ingestion and killing. Here we provide the full genome sequence and functional characterization of this non-pathogenic KpGe strain. 相似文献

The co-evolution of individual behaviors and social institutions 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
We present agent-based simulations of a model of a deme-structured population in which group differences in social institutions are culturally transmitted and individual behaviors are genetically transmitted. We use a standard extended fitness accounting framework to identify the parameter space for which this co-evolutionary process generates high levels of group-beneficial behaviors. We show that intergroup conflicts may explain the evolutionary success of both: (a) altruistic forms of human sociality towards unrelated members of one's group; and (b) group-level institutional structures such as food sharing which have emerged and diffused repeatedly in a wide variety of ecologies during the course of human history. Group-beneficial behaviors may evolve if (a) they inflict sufficient fitness costs on outgroup individuals and (b) group-level institutions limit the individual fitness costs of these behaviors and thereby attenuate within-group selection against these behaviors. Thus, the evolutionary success of individually costly but group-beneficial behaviors in the relevant environments during the first 90,000 years of anatomically modern human existence may have been a consequence of distinctive human capacities in social institution building. 相似文献

Members of the Paracoccidioides complex are human pathogens that infect different anatomic sites in the host. The ability of Paracoccidioides spp. to infect host niches is putatively supported by a wide range of virulence factors, as well as fitness attributes that may comprise the transition from mycelia/conidia to yeast cells, response to deprivation of micronutrients in the host, expression of adhesins on the cell surface, response to oxidative and nitrosative stresses, as well as the secretion of hydrolytic enzymes in the host tissue. Our understanding of how those molecules can contribute to the infection establishment has been increasing significantly, through the utilization of several models, including in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo infection in animal models. In this review we present an update of our understanding on the strategies used by the pathogen to establish infection. Our results were obtained through a comparative proteomic analysis of Paracoccidioides spp. in models of infection. 相似文献

Bacterial pathogens have evolved a wide range of strategies to colonize and invade human organs, despite the presence of multiple host defense mechanisms. In this review, we will describe how pathogenic bacteria can adhere and multiply at the surface of host cells, how some bacteria can enter and proliferate inside these cells, and finally how pathogens may cross epithelial or endothelial host barriers and get access to internal tissues, leading to severe diseases in humans. 相似文献

Using a new dynamical network model of society in which pairwise interactions are weighted according to mutual satisfaction, we show that cooperation is the norm in the hawks–doves game when individuals are allowed to break ties with undesirable neighbors and to make new acquaintances in their extended neighborhood. Moreover, cooperation is robust with respect to rather strong strategy perturbations. We also discuss the empirical structure of the emerging networks, and the reasons that allow cooperators to thrive in the population. Given the metaphorical importance of this game for social interaction, this is an encouraging positive result as standard theory for large mixing populations prescribes that a certain fraction of defectors must always exist at equilibrium. 相似文献

How do human groups maintain a high level of cooperation despite a low level of genetic relatedness among group members? We suggest that many humans have a predisposition to punish those who violate group-beneficial norms, even when this imposes a fitness cost on the punisher. Such altruistic punishment is widely observed to sustain high levels of cooperation in behavioral experiments and in natural settings. We offer a model of cooperation and punishment that we call STRONG RECIPROCITY: where members of a group benefit from mutual adherence to a social norm, strong reciprocators obey the norm and punish its violators, even though as a result they receive lower payoffs than other group members, such as selfish agents who violate the norm and do not punish, and pure cooperators who adhere to the norm but free-ride by never punishing. Our agent-based simulations show that, under assumptions approximating likely human environments over the 100000 years prior to the domestication of animals and plants, the proliferation of strong reciprocators when initially rare is highly likely, and that substantial frequencies of all three behavioral types can be sustained in a population. As a result, high levels of cooperation are sustained. Our results do not require that group members be related or that group extinctions occur. 相似文献

Blooms of toxic dinoflagellates can co-occur with mass mortality events associated with herpesvirus OsHV-1 μVar infection that have been decimating Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas spat and juveniles every summer since 2008 in France. This study investigated the possible effect of a harmful dinoflagellate, Alexandrium catenella, a producer of Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PSTs), upon the oyster spat–herpesvirus interaction. Oyster spat from a hatchery were challenged by cohabitation with oysters contaminated in the field with OsHV-1 μVar and possibly other pathogens. Simultaneously, the oysters were exposed to cultured A. catenella. Infection with OsHV-1 μVar and PST accumulation were measured after 4 days of experimental exposure.Exposure to Alexandrium catenella modified the host–pathogen interaction by reducing prevalence of OsHV-1 μVar infection. In addition, oysters challenged with OsHV-1 μVar and possibly other pathogens from the environment accumulated smaller amounts of PSTs than unchallenged oysters. Three possible mechanisms are suggested by these results: (i) possible direct interactions between A. catenella and herpesvirus (or associated pathogens) could reduce viral transmission and algal availability for oyster consumption; (ii) oyster feeding behavior or digestive functions may have been altered, thus decreasing both uptake of viral particles and consumption or digestion of toxic algae and consequent toxin accumulation; (iii) immuno-activation by A. catenella could enhance defense efficiency against OsHV-1 μVar infection. These findings suggest further research on relationships between OsHV-1 μVar and toxic dinoflagellates and their combined effects upon disease transmission and proliferation processes, as well as on oyster physiological and immunological involvement in this complex, tripartite interaction. 相似文献

By assuming the random intensity of selection, the emergence of cooperation on a network is studied. We constructed an evolutionary model in which an individual plays the prisoner's dilemma game, and updates both its strategy and neighbor connections in response to its relative success in the game. The constant (strong or weak) and random intensities of selection are compared. The random intensities of selection are introduced to realize complex environmental effects on the fitness of each individual. Breaking the links on the network is realized according to fixed global parameters. We found that cooperative clusters emerged when cooperators unilaterally broke the link with defectors. The emergent networks under these conditions had a high clustering coefficient and shared some properties with a scale-free network. In addition, after a cooperator with high fitness emerged circumstantially under the random intensity of selection, we observed that the cooperative linkages emerged and spread rapidly through the network. This situation frequently occurred because of the stochastic effect on the fitness of cooperators. Thus, the origin of such phenomena is qualitatively different from the Lotka-Volterra system in which deterministic processes control the system. Cooperative linkages spread more when defectors maintained many links with cooperators. 相似文献

Co-occurrence of bacterial infections with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global problem. Melioidosis caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei is 10 times more likely to occur in patients with T2D, than in normoglycemic individuals. Using an experimental model of T2D, we observed that greater susceptibility in T2D was due to differences in proportions of infiltrating leucocytes and reduced levels of MCP-1, IFN-γ and IL-12 at sites of infection within 24 h post-infection. However, by 72 h the levels of inflammatory cytokines and bacteria were markedly higher in visceral tissue and blood in T2D mice. In T2D, dysregulated early immune responses are responsible for the greater predisposition to B. pseudomallei infection. 相似文献

The evolution of cooperation is possible with a simple model of a population of agents that can move between groups. The agents play public good games within their group. The relative fitness of individuals within the whole population affects their number of offspring. Groups of cooperators evolve but over time are invaded by defectors which eventually results in the group's extinction. However, for small levels of migration and mutation, high levels of cooperation evolve at the population level. Thus, evolution of cooperation based on individual fitness without kin selection, indirect or direct reciprocity is possible. We provide an analysis of the parameters that affect cooperation, and describe the dynamics and distribution of population sizes over time. 相似文献

The mucosal lining forms the physical and chemical barrier that protects against pathogens and hostile particles and harbors its own population of bacteria, fungi and archea, known as the microbiota. The immune system controls tolerance of this population of microorganisms that have proven to be beneficial for its host. Keeping its physical integrity and a correct balance with the microbiota, the mucosa preserves its homeostasis and its protective function and maintains host’s health. However, in some conditions, pathogens may succeed in breaching mucosal homeostasis and successfully infecting the host. In this review we will discuss the role the mucosa plays in the defense against bacterial pathogens by considering the gap junction protein connexins. We will detail their implication in mucosal homeostasis and upon infection with bacteria in the respiratory and the gastrointestinal tracts. 相似文献

Nutritional immunity is one of the strategies employed by the host to combat invading pathogens. It consists of actively controlling micronutrient bioavailability in the site of infection to hinder microbial growth. The role of manganese in cell biology and nutritional immunity for bacterial pathogens is well understood, but data regarding fungi are still limited. Fungi have evolved complex regulatory systems to acquire, distribute, and utilize manganese. Therefore, the disruption of manganese homeostasis in pathogenic fungi may lead to severe phenotypes and impact virulence. Because the host presents tools for manganese sequestration, and this condition can reduce the growth of important fungal pathogens such as Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Cryptococcus neoformans, it is feasible to suppose that manganese nutritional immunity could play an important role in fungal infections. However, direct evidence is still lacking, and little is known about manganese homeostasis, nutritional immunity, and specific adaptations in individual species of fungal pathogens. In this opinion, we present the current body of knowledge about these subjects, arguing about manganese importance in host–pathogen interactions. 相似文献

Adaptation to the host environment is crucial for fungal pathogenesis. Calcium (Ca2+) signals are essential for fungal cells to respond rapidly to stress stimuli. In eukaryotic cells, Ca2+ is the main intracellular secondary messenger and regulates a myriad of processes, including the cellular fitness of the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. In this minireview, we highlight the main cryptococcal processes regulated by Ca2+. Moreover, we underline all the characterized proteins responsible for intracellular calcium homeostasis in this yeast, such as Ca2+ transporters and binding proteins. These elements, in general, are essential for C. neoformans’ growth and adaptation to the host environment, as well as to virulence mechanisms. We also revisit the specific traits of the calcineurin signaling pathway in C. neoformans, which is the major pathway regulated by calcium and is crucial for yeast pathogenesis, adaptation, and growth at 37 °C. Notably, several Ca2+-related functions are highly conserved throughout fungal cells. Moreover, C. neoformans exhibits exclusive, significant features that are required for disease progression, thus attracting attention as feasible targets for antifungal drug development. Collectively, all the available data related to Ca2+ processes clarify the complex role that Ca2+ plays within cryptococcal cells, participating in host adaptation, transmigration, antifungal resistance, cell growth, and more. 相似文献

We include spatial extension into a model for the maintenance of sexual reproduction introduced recently. The model is based on a broad spectrum of resources, which regrow slowly. Other key features of the model are that sexual reproduction sets in when resources become scarce and that only a few genotypes can coexist locally. The extension of the model to several patches in space is done in two different ways. Model A is based on central egg deposition and allows migration of juveniles into all patches. Model B has a one-dimensional array of patches with migration only between neighboring patches. The main findings are that wide dispersal favors asexuals, while for slower migration there is a wide range of parameter values for which sexually reproducing species always win against asexuals. These results are conform with major patterns for the distribution of parthenogenesis in animals and plants, i.e. the prevalence of parthenogenetic reproduction in minute species, which are easily dispersed by physical forces, such as protists and small metazoans including e.g. bdelloid rotifers, tardigrades and nematodes. 相似文献

In insects and other arthropods the formation of eumelanin (melanization) is a broad spectrum and potent immune response that is used to encapsulate and kill invading pathogens. This immune response is regulated by the activation of prophenoxidase (proPO), which is controlled by proteinase cascades and its serpin inhibitors, together forming the proPO activation system. While the molecular composition of these protease cascades are well understood in insect model systems, major knowledge gaps remain in mosquitoes. Recently, a regulatory unit of melanization in Anopheles gambiae was documented, comprised of the inhibitory serpin-clip-serine proteinase, CLIPB9 and its inhibitor serpin-2 (SRPN2). Partial reversion of SRPN2 phenotypes in melanotic tumor formation and adult survival by SRPN2/CLIPB9 double knockdown suggested other target proteinases of SRPN2 in regulating melanization. Here we report that CLIPB8 supplements the SRPN2/CLIPB9 regulatory unit in controlling melanization in An. gambiae. As with CLIPB9, knockdown of CLIPB8 partially reversed the pleiotropic phenotype induced by SRPN2 silencing with regards to adult survival and melanotic tumor formation. Recombinant SRPN2 protein formed an SDS-stable protein complex with activated recombinant CLIPB8, however did not efficiently inhibit CLIPB8 activity in vitro. CLIPB8 did not directly activate proPO in vitro nor was it able to cleave and activate proCLIPB9. Nevertheless, epistasis analysis using RNAi placed CLIPB8 and CLIPB9 in the same pathway leading to melanization, suggesting that CLIPB8 either acts further upstream of CLIPB9 or is required for activation of a yet to be identified serine proteinase homolog. Taken together, this study identifies CLIPB8 as an additional player in proPO activation cascade and highlights the complexity of the proteinase network that regulates melanization in An. gambiae. 相似文献

Ever since image-based models for indirect reciprocity were introduced, the relative merits of scoring vs. standing have been discussed to find out how important it is to differentiate between justified and non-justified defections. This is analogous to the question whether punishment can sustain cooperation even when it is costly. We show that an answer to this question can depend on details of the model, for instance concerning the probability distribution of the number of interactions experienced per player. We use extensive individual-based simulations to compare scoring, standing and other forms of assessing defections, and show that several forms of indirect reciprocation can robustly sustain cooperation. By most standards, standing is better than scoring, but nevertheless scoring is able to sustain cooperation in the presence of errors. The model presented here is based on three specifications: each player has a personal list of images of all co-players, a specific way of judging an observed situation, and a specific strategy to decide whether to cooperate or not. 相似文献

Summary In the present paper we distinguish between two aspects of sexual reproduction. Genetic recombination is a universal features of the sexual process. It is a primitive condition found in simple, single-celled organisms, as well as in higher plants and animals. Its function is primarily to repair genetic damage and eliminate deleterious mutations. Recombination also produces new variation, however, and this can provide the basis for adaptive evolutionary change in spatially and temporally variable environments. The other feature usually associated with sexual reproduction, differentiated male and female roles, is a derived condition, largely restricted to complex, diploid, multicellular organisms. The evolution of anisogamous gametes (small, mobile male gametes containing only genetic material, and large, relatively immobile female gametes containing both genetic material and resources for the developing offspring) not only established the fundamental basis for maleness and femaleness, it also led to an asymmetry between the sexes in the allocation of resources to mating and offspring. Whereas females allocate their resources primarily to offspring, the existence of many male gametes for each female one results in sexual selection on males to allocate their resources to traits that enhance success in competition for fertilizations. A consequence of this reproductive competition, higher variance in male than female reproductive success, results in more intense selection on males. The greater response of males to both stabilizing and directional selection constitutes an evolutionary advantage of males that partially compensates for the cost of producing them. The increased fitness contributed by sexual selection on males will complement the advantages of genetic recombination for DNA repair and elimination of deleterious mutations in any outcrossing breeding system in which males contribute only genetic material to their offspring. Higher plants and animals tend to maintain sexual reproduction in part because of the enhanced fitness of offspring resulting from sexual selection at the level of individual organisms, and in part because of the superiority of sexual populations in competition with asexual clones. 相似文献
