The photosynthetic thermophiles have advantage in sequestering CO2 emitted from the energy sector due to their adaptation to high temperatures, growth at high concentrations of CO2, and economically important metabolites. The characterization of such a microorganism, a cyanobacterium from Taian hot springs in Taiwan is described here. This thermophilic cyanobacterium is rod-shaped with a size of 1.2–2.5 μm × 6.0–9.0 μm. A comparison of the 16S RNA and cpcBA-IGS sequences revealed that it is closely related to Thermosynechococcus elongatus BP-1 and so named as Thermosynechococcus elongatus TA-1. This cyanobacterium has better growth at 10% and 20% CO2, at 50 °C with 6000 lx light intensity, at a starting pH of 7–9 and in a medium with 20 mM NaCl. The preferred nitrogen source is NaNO3 of which the minimal requirement is 10 mM. The purified phycocyanin (C-PC) from TA-1 is still kept native and active at a wide range of temperatures (4–60 °C) with a 65.65% activity even at 60 °C, as well as pH values from 4 to 9 and thus exhibiting a good thermal and acid–base stability. This thermophilic cyanobacterium could make integration of CO2 mitigation from industrial flue gas and production of economically important product, like C-PC, more feasible.  相似文献

Recently discovered stapes of Pleistocene South American ground sloths of the genera Lestodon and Glossotherium are studied. Available body mass estimates are larger for Lestodon (4100 kg) than for Glossotherium (1500 kg), reflecting the obvious difference in the overall size of the skull and other bones. However, as previously reported, the absolute size of incus and malleus is very similar in both genera. In a previous work, the frequency range of Glossotherium (from 44 Hz to 15,489 Hz) was estimated quantitatively from well-preserved tympanic ring dimensions. For the first time the frequency ranges of hearing in both genera are estimated by a method based on the footplate area of the stapes. The obtained frequency ranges are consistent with the previous estimation for Glossotherium and are similar in both genera, giving evidence of a frequency range of hearing independent of body size in this group of mammals. Some possible paleobiological implications of the results may include adaptation to some specific sound source, fossoriality, or long-range communication.  相似文献

Two epimers of malyngamide C, 8-O-acetyl-8-epi-malyngamide C (1) and 8-epi-malyngamide C (3) have been isolated along with known compounds 6-O-acetylmalyngamide F (5), H (6), J (7) K (8), and characterized from a Grenada field collection of the marine cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula. The structures of these compounds were deduced by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic and mass spectral data interpretation. Absolute configurations were determined by a combination of CD-spectroscopy, chemical degradation and the variable temperature Mosher’s method. Compounds 15, 7 and 8 displayed moderate cytotoxicity to NCI-H460 human lung tumor and neuro-2a cancer cell lines, with IC50 values ranging between 0.5 and 20 μg/mL.  相似文献

Cadmium is one of the most toxic substances found in aquatic ecosystems. This metal tends to accumulate in photosynthetic plants and fish and is transferred to humans causing many diseases. It has to be removed from our environment to reduce any health risks. Dry biomass of the microalga (cyanobacterium) Spirulina platensis was used as biosorbent for the removal of cadmium ions (Cd2+) from aqueous solutions. The effects of different levels of pH (3–9), biomass concentration (0.25–2 g), temperature (18–46 °C), metal concentration (40–200 mg/l) and contact time (30–120 min) were tested. Batch cultures were carried out in triplicate in an orbital shaker at 150 rpm. After centrifuging the biomass, the remaining levels of cadmium ions were measured in the supernatant by Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. Very high levels of removal, reaching up to 87.69% were obtained. The highest percentage of removal was reached at pH 8, 2 g of biosorbent, 26 °C, and 60 mg/l of cadmium concentration after 90 min of contact time. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to describe the adsorption isotherm of the metal ions by S. platensis. Langmuir model was found to be in better correlation with experimental data (R2 = 0.92). Results of this study indicated that S. platensis is a very good candidate for the removal of heavy metals from aquatic environments. The process is feasible, reliable and eco-friendly.  相似文献

An investigation into the distribution of Dinophysis spp. in coastal waters off the south coast of Ireland was carried out in July 2007. Dinophysis acuta was present as a sub surface layer containing up to 55,000 cells L−1. The population had a high percentage of viable cells (mean: 89%; median: 94%; n = 24) with a high specific division rate (∼0.55 d−1). The layer, of approximately 5 m thickness, did not coincide with the fluorescence maximum and was present as a patch of horizontal dimension less than 10 km × 7 km. Both conventional and towed undulating CTD used in conjunction with high vertical resolution sampling methods showed the patch of Dinophysis to move with a similar speed and direction as the coastal flow, which ran parallel to the coast in the form of a coastal jet with speed of the order of 6.5–7 km day−1. The implications of the alongshore transport of populations of harmful species in coastal jets for monitoring programmes and predictive models are discussed.  相似文献

Taste and odor (T & O) episodes always cause strong effects on drinking water supply system. Luanhe River diversion into Tianjin City in China is an important drinking water resource. Massive growth of a benthic filamentous cyanobacterium with geosmin production in the open canal caused a strong earthy odor episode in Tianjin. On the basis of the morphological and molecular identification of this cyanobacterium as Oscillatoria limosa Agardh ex Gomont, the genetic basis for geosmin biosynthesis and factors influencing growth and geosmin production of O. limosa CHAB 7000 were studied in this work. A 2268-bp open reading frame, encoding 755 amino acids, was amplified and characterized as the geosmin synthase gene (geo), followed by a cyclic nucleotide-binding protein gene (cnb). Phylogenetic analysis implied that the evolution of the geosmin genes in O. limosa CHAB 7000 might involve a horizontal gene transfer event. Examination on the growth and geosmin production of O. limosa CHAB 7000 at different light intensities showed that the maximum geosmin production was observed at 10 μmol photons m−2 s−1, while the optimum growth was at 60 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Under three temperature conditions (15 °C, 25 °C, and 35 °C), the maximum growth and geosmin production were observed at 25 °C. Most amounts of geosmin were retained in cells during the growth phase, but high temperature and low light intensity increased the release of geosmin into the medium, implying that O. limosa CHAB 7000 had a high potential harm for the release of geosmin from its cells at these adverse conditions.  相似文献

A marine, unicellular cyanobacterium, Synechococcus elongatus strain BDU/75042 was found to sequester uranium from aqueous systems at pH 7.8. The organism could remove 72% (53.5 mg U g?1 dry weight) of uranium from test solutions containing 100 μM uranyl carbonate within 1 h. The equilibrium data fitted well in the Langmuir isotherm thus suggesting a monolayer adsorption of uranium on the cyanobacterial biomass and predicted the maximum adsorption capacity of 124 mg U g?1 dry weight. Light and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy confirmed the uranyl adsorption by this organism. Most of the bound uranium was found to be associated with the extracellular polysaccharides (EPS) suggesting its interaction with the surface active ligands. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy suggested the amide groups and the deprotonated carboxyl groups on the cyanobacterial cell surface were likely to be involved in uranyl adsorption. The cell bound uranium could be released by washing with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) or 0.1 N HCl. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed the identity of uranium deposits associated with the cell biomass as uranyl carbonate hydrate. The study revealed the potential of this cyanobacterium for harvesting uranium from natural aquatic environments.  相似文献

Background: Leukaemia is a heterogeneous disease in which haematopoietic progenitor cells acquire genetic lesions that lead to a block in differentiation, increased self-renewal, and unregulated proliferation. The enzyme 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), involved in folate metabolism, plays a crucial role in cells because folate availability is important for DNA integrity. The aim of this case–control study was to evaluate the association of the C677T MTHFR gene polymorphism with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). Materials and methods: A total of 275 leukaemia cases – including AML (n = 112), ALL (n = 81), CML (n = 43), CLL (n = 39) – and 251 age/sex-matched healthy control individuals participated in this study. MTHFR C677T polymorphisms in the cases and controls were evaluated by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The average MTHFR 677CC, 677CT, 677TT genotype frequencies of total leukaemia cases were 68.73%, 19.64%, and 11.64% in cases, and 71.71%, 24.30%, and 3.98% in healthy controls, respectively. The average frequency of the MTHFR 677T allele was 21.45% among the cases compared to 16.13% among the controls. Conclusions: In the present case–control study we have observed a higher frequency of the MTHFR 677TT genotype in cases of leukaemia (AML, ALL, CML and CLL) as compared with controls; this might be due to ethnic and geographic variation. As per our findings, although the frequency of the MTHFR 677T allele is moderately high in AML, ALL and CLL, no statistically significant association was found; on the other hand statistically significant association was found in the context of CML cases.  相似文献

d-Mannitol (hereafter denoted mannitol) is used in the medical and food industry and is currently produced commercially by chemical hydrogenation of fructose or by extraction from seaweed. Here, the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 was genetically modified to photosynthetically produce mannitol from CO2 as the sole carbon source. Two codon-optimized genes, mannitol-1-phosphate dehydrogenase (mtlD) from Escherichia coli and mannitol-1-phosphatase (mlp) from the protozoan chicken parasite Eimeria tenella, in combination encoding a biosynthetic pathway from fructose-6-phosphate to mannitol, were expressed in the cyanobacterium resulting in accumulation of mannitol in the cells and in the culture medium. The mannitol biosynthetic genes were expressed from a single synthetic operon inserted into the cyanobacterial chromosome by homologous recombination. The mannitol biosynthesis operon was constructed using a novel uracil-specific excision reagent (USER)-based polycistronic expression system characterized by ligase-independent, directional cloning of the protein-encoding genes such that the insertion site was regenerated after each cloning step. Genetic inactivation of glycogen biosynthesis increased the yield of mannitol presumably by redirecting the metabolic flux to mannitol under conditions where glycogen normally accumulates. A total mannitol yield equivalent to 10% of cell dry weight was obtained in cell cultures synthesizing glycogen while the yield increased to 32% of cell dry weight in cell cultures deficient in glycogen synthesis; in both cases about 75% of the mannitol was released from the cells into the culture medium by an unknown mechanism. The highest productivity was obtained in a glycogen synthase deficient culture that after 12 days showed a mannitol concentration of 1.1 g mannitol L−1 and a production rate of 0.15 g mannitol L−1 day−1. This system may be useful for biosynthesis of valuable sugars and sugar derivatives from CO2 in cyanobacteria.  相似文献

Anabaena doliolum subjected to 43, 48, 53 and 58 °C temperature for 1, 2, 3 and 4 h, showed temperature and time-dependent increase in H2O2 production and MDA contents. All the measured enzymes of the antioxidative defense system (SOD, CAT, APX and GR) showed increase in their activities at 43 °C after 1 h of treatment, but at higher temperature their activity declined. The content of antioxidants (ASC, GSH, and α-TOC) increased significantly with rise in temperature as well as duration of treatment. This study clearly demonstrates that when enzymatic defense system becomes inactive, the antioxidants (GSH, and α-TOC) are induced to protect the cyanobacterium from heat stress. One of the major roles of these antioxidants appears to be the protection of PSII as reflected by an effect on O2 evolution up to 53 °C.  相似文献

BackgroundPelvic organs morbidity after irradiation of cancer patients remains a major problem although new technologies have been developed and implemented. A relatively simple and suitable method for routine clinical practice is needed for preliminary assessment of normal tissue intrinsic radiosensitivity. The micronucleus test (MNT) determines the frequency of the radiation induced micronuclei (MN) in peripheral blood lymphocytes, which could serve as an indicator of intrinsic cell radiosensitivity.AimTo investigate a possible use of the micronucleus test (MNT) for acute radiation morbidity prediction in gynecological cancer patients.Materials and methodsForty gynecological cancer patients received 50 Gy conventional external pelvic irradiation after radical surgery. A four-field “box” technique was applied with 2D planning. The control group included 10 healthy females.Acute normal tissue reactions were graded according to NCI CTCAE v.3.0. From all reaction scores, the highest score named “summarized clinical radiosensitivity” was selected for a statistical analysis.MNT was performed before and after in vitro irradiation with 1.5 Gy. The mean radiation induced frequency of micronuclei per 1000 binucleated cells (MN/1000) and lymphocytes containing micronuclei per 1000 binucleated cells (cells with MN/1000) were evaluated for both patients and controls.An arbitrary cut off value was created to pick up a radiosensitive individual: the mean value of spontaneous frequency of cells with MN/1000 ± 2SD, found in the control group.ResultsBoth mean spontaneous frequency of cells with MN/1000 and MN/1000 were registered to be significantly higher in cancer patients compared to the control group (t = 2.46, p = 0.02 and t = 2.51, p = 0.02). No statistical difference was registered when comparing radiation induced MN frequencies between those groups.Eighty percent (32) of patients developed grade 2 summarized clinical radiosensitivity, with great variations in MNT parameters. Only three patients with grade 2 “summarized clinical radiosensitivity” had values of cells with MN/1000 above the chosen radiosensitivity threshold.ConclusionThe present study was not able to confirm in vitro MNT applicability for radiosensitivity prediction in pelvic irradiation.  相似文献

The potential application of dry biomass of a cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans as a supplement in SSF for the production of laccase from Pleurotus ostreatus was evaluated. Experiments were carried out in solid culture using groundnut shell as a basic substrate supplemented with four independent nitrogen sources (ammonium sulphate, urea, yeast extract and dry powder of cyanobacteria). All the four supplements enhanced the enzyme yield, and yeast extract showed precedence over inorganic nitrogenous sources. However, when dry biomass of A. nidulans was used as an additive to groundnut shell (agricultural residues), it supported maximum cell growth (56.83 ± 5.56 mg/g dry substrate) and laccase production (49.21 ± 4.89 U/g dry substrate). Addition of 1 mM copper salt in the medium containing groundnut shell supplemented with yeast extract gave laccase activity of 32.64 ± 3.4 U/g dry substrate. When dry powder of cyanobacterial biomass was used as N-supplement, laccase production enhanced to 65.42 ± 6.48 U/g dry substrate. In addition to the enhancement to enzyme production inhibitory effects of high concentrations of copper was also diminished in the medium having dry cyanobacterial biomass. This study, forms the first report on the potential application of cyanobacterial biomass as an additive for production of laccase by Pleurotus ostraetus MTCC 1804 in solid state fermentation and has relevance in scale-up production of this fungal enzyme of commercial significance.  相似文献

This study aimed at analysing the effects of age, horn and places on biting and butting as intra-species aggressive activities. Seventy-two Turkish Saanen goats were used as animal material and 22,686 aggressive behaviours were recorded in different places from a total of 118 h direct observation. Of the observations of aggressive behaviours, 32.7% was biting behaviour and the rest was butting behaviour. The frequency of biting behaviour in 3 or more years old goats was significantly higher than that of biting behaviour in 1 and 2 years old animals (P  0.01). The observations revealed that horned or hornless goats exhibited biting behaviour; however the frequency of biting behaviour in hornless goats was 2.38 times higher than in horned goats (P  0.01). Biting and butting behaviours were found to be well correlated with the area of places (P  0.01). As the area of places got narrowed, the frequency of biting increased. However, such a trend was not observed in butting behaviour. The frequency of butting behaviour again increased with the increase in social hierarchy (P  0.01), whereas the frequency of biting behaviour was not affected by social hierarchy (P = 0.30). In conclusion, intra-species biting behaviour, which is thought to have developed as a result of horn absence, should be questioned whether this is unique to the herd or to the genotype.  相似文献

Eight castrated male lambs (35 ± 4 kg live weight), fed a basal diet of kikuyu grass hay, were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin Square experiment with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate the effect of supplemental feeding frequency and source of rumen degradable N on intake, digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and microbial protein yield. Treatments were supplementation with cassava meal plus calcium caseinate or cassava meal plus urea offered at a rate of 7 g/kg live weight daily in one or two meals per day. Lambs were fed twice daily in such manner to allow ad libitum comsumption of forage. There was significant feeding frequency by N source interaction on variables of intake. In general, intake of feed components was higher (P  0.05) by lambs offered the caseinate-supplement twice daily over intake observed in lambs given the others diet treatments. Digestibility of feed components was neither affected by supplemental N source (DM, P = 0.541; OM, P = 0.585; NDF, P = 0.828) nor by feeding frequency (DM, P = 0.122; OM, P = 0.175; NDF, P = 0.591). Urinary excretion of N increased (P  0.05) in lambs supplemented twice daily whereas N retention was similar for all treatments (N source, P = 0.748; feeding frequency, P = 0.418). Microbial protein entering into the small intestine was affected by the interaction between feeding frequency and N source such as an increasing (P < 0.10) in this variable was observed when lambs received the caseinate but not the urea supplement twice daily. Efficiency of microbial protein synthesis, however, was not affected by treatments (N source, P = 0.588; feeding frequency, P = 0.334). Rumen pH averaged 6.70 and it was neither affected by N source (P = 0.827) nor by feeding frequency (P = 0.740). Ruminal concentration of ammonia N was not affected by feeding frequency (P = 0.144) while it increased (P < 0.05) when urea rather than caseinate was the supplemental N source (mean of 7.61 mg/dl vs. 6.00 mg/dl). Concentration of sugars in rumen fluid was higher (P  0.05) in lambs supplemented once a day compared to twice daily (mean of 49.4 mg/dl vs. 34.4 mg/dl) for both N sources. A significant (P  0.05) N source by feeding frequency interaction effect was observed for ruminal concentrations of α-amino N compounds. In urea treatment α-amino N concentration increased (P  0.05) in lambs receiving the supplement twice daily compared to once a day (mean of 4.59 mg/dl vs. 3.70 mg/dl) while in caseinate treatment it was higher (P  0.05) in lambs offered the supplement in one meal per day compared to twice daily (mean of 5.29 mg/dl vs. 4.07 mg/dl). In conclusion, for ruminants fed a tropical grass-based diet, starch-rich supplement containing non-protein N as N source may be offered only once a day whereas the supply of nutrients may be improved if degradable true protein is included as N source and supplement is offered in two meals per day.  相似文献

DNA and chromosome damages in peripheral blood lymphocytes were evaluated in 151 workers occupationally exposed to formaldehyde (FA) and 112 non-FA exposed controls. The effects of polymorphisms in three glutathione-S-transferase (GSTs) genes on the DNA and chromosome damages were assessed as well. Alkaline comet assay and cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay were used to determine DNA and chromosome damages, respectively. The genotypes of GSTP1 (Ile105Val), GSTT1, and GSTM1 were assayed. The mean 8-h time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations of FA in two plywood factories were 0.83 ppm (range: 0.08–6.30 ppm). FA-exposed workers had higher olive tail moment (TM) and CBMN frequency compared with controls (Olive TM, 3.54, 95%CI = 3.19–3.93 vs. 0.93, 95%CI = 0.78–1.10, P < 0.01; CBMN frequency, 5.51 ± 3.37 vs. 2.67 ± 1.32, P < 0.01). Olive TM and the CBMN frequency also had a dose-dependent relation with the personal FA exposure. Significant association between FA exposure history and olive TM and CBMN frequency were also identified. The level of olive TM was slightly higher in FA-exposed workers with GSTM1 null genotype than those with non-null genotype (3.86, 95%CI = 3.31–4.50 vs. 3.27, 95%CI = 2.83–3.78, P = 0.07) with adjustment of covariates. We also found that FA-exposed workers carrying GSTP1 Val allele had a slightly higher CBMN frequency compared with workers carrying only the wild-type allele (6.32 ± 3.78 vs. 5.01 ± 2.98, P = 0.05). Our results suggest that the FA exposure in this occupational population increased DNA and chromosome damages and polymorphisms in GSTs genes may modulate the genotoxic effects of FA exposure.  相似文献

Background aimsThe aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between infused lymphocyte populations and lymphocyte subsets at engraftment, and the early clinical implications of lymphocyte subset recovery after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in multiple myeloma (MM).MethodsWe examined the lymphocyte populations of infused autografts and the lymphocyte subsets of peripheral blood at engraftment from 50 patients using flow cytometry. Each subset was grouped as low (below median) and high (above median) to examine the correlation with mucositis of grade 3 or more and the occurrence of infections and cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation.ResultsUsing Spearman correlation coefficients, we found that cell doses of infused CD8+ (P = 0.042) and CD19+ cells (P = 0.044) were significantly associated with the absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) at engraftment. The dose of infused CD34+ cells was not associated with the change of lymphocyte subsets except for an inverse correlation with CD4+ cells (P = 0.006). After adjusting for potential variables in univariate analysis, multivariate analyzes revealed that the lower ratio of infused CD4+ to CD8+ cells (P = 0.030) was an independent factor for severe mucositis. Of lymphocyte subsets at engraftment, a higher frequency of CD3+ (P = 0.024) and a lower frequency of CD56+ (P = 0.020) were independent predictors for infections after engraftment. A higher frequency of CD8+ cells (P = 0.041) and a lower ratio of CD4+ to CD8+ (P = 0.021) were independent predictors for CMV reactivation.ConclusionsOur data suggest that lymphocyte subset analysis of infused autograft and peripheral blood at engraftment may provide new predictors for early complications after ASCT in patient with MM.  相似文献

Succinate fermentation was investigated in Escherichia coli strains overexpressing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. 7120 ecaA gene encoding carbonic anhydrase (CA). In strain BL21 (DE3) bearing ecaA, the activity of CA was 21.8 U mg−1 protein, whereas non-detectable CA activity was observed in the control strain. Meanwhile, the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) increased from 0.2 U mg−1 protein to 1.13 U mg−1 protein. The recombinant bearing ecaA reached a succinate yield of 0.39 mol mol−1 glucose at the end of the fermentation. It was 2.1-fold higher than that of control strain which was just 0.19 mol mol−1 glucose. EcaA gene was also introduced into E. coli DC1515, which was deficient in glucose phosphotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase and pyruvate:formate lyase. Succinate yield can be further increased to 1.26 mol mol−1 glucose. It could be concluded that the enhancement of the supply of HCO3 in vivo by ecaA overexpression is an effective strategy for the improvement of succinate production in E. coli.  相似文献

Response surface methodology (RSM) has been used to optimize the critical parameters responsible for higher Cd2+ removal by a unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocystis pevalekii. A three-level Box–Behnken factorial design was used to optimize pH, biomass and metal concentration for Cd2+ removal. A coefficient of determination (R2) value (0.99), model F-value (86.40) and its low p-value (F < 0.0001) along with lower value of coefficient of variation (5.61%) indicated the fitness of response surface quadratic model during the present study. At optimum pH (6.48), biomass concentration (0.25 mg protein ml?1) and metal concentration (5 μg ml?1) the model predicted 4.29 μg ml?1 Cd2+ removal and experimentally, 4.27 μg ml?1 Cd2+ removal was obtained.  相似文献

Two anabaenopeptin-type peptides, lyngbyaureidamides A and B, together with two previously reported peptides lyngbyazothrins C and D, were isolated from the cultured freshwater cyanobacterium Lyngbya sp. (SAG 36.91). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic and chemical methods. Background: There is no agreement on the usefulness of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test for prostate cancer screening in young men in Japan. We believe that medical check-up departments in hospitals conduct prostate cancer screening in subjects under 40 years of age undergoing intensive health check-up for commercial reasons, and speculate that some medical doctors provide tacit consent for this action. To understand the prevalence of PSA testing in young men, the authors examined the age distribution of workers who underwent the PSA test. Methods: The authors used the 2009 intensive health check-up data of male workers aged 30–65 years (n = 298) in a car-manufacturing company to investigate the status of prostate-cancer screening in young men. Multiple comparison was conducted by Tukey's method when the analysis of variance revealed significant difference. Results: According to the frequency distribution of age, 15.8% of the subjects were under 40 years of age. The mean PSA value increased with age, ranging from 1.0 ng/mL in subjects in their 30s’, to 2.0 ng/mL in subjects in their 60s’. The mean PSA level in subjects in their 60s’ was significantly higher than that in subjects in their 30s’ and 40s’. The percentage of subjects with serum PSA levels of 4 ng/mL or higher in subjects in their 30s’, 40s’, 50s’ and 60s’ were 2.1% (1/47), 1.6% (2/125), 4.4% (5/114) and 8.3% (1/12), respectively. Conclusions: One-sixth of male workers attending the health check-up program were under 40 years of age. According to the criteria of the Japanese Urological Association, this examination program included younger subjects who were not candidates for PSA screening.  相似文献
