Harpellales (Legeriomycetaceae, Zygomycota) or ‘trichomycetes’ are fungi that inhabit the digestive tracts of arthropods such as insects, millipedes, and crustaceans. In the current study we examined changes in 5 morphological characters of Smittium culisetae (Harpellales: Legeriomycetaceae) between the two dipteran (mosquito, black fly) hosts reared under 3 different temperatures (17, 22, 30 °C). Both host and temperature had a pervasive effect on the linear dimension of trichospores, their generative cells and hyphae width. At 30 °C the mean size of all 5 morphological characters were consistently larger in fungus taken from the mosquito host than from the black fly host. At 17 °C and 22 °C, however, there were no consistent patterns. The effect of host was so pronounced that it could be accurately determined which host S. culisetae colonised based on differences in linear morphology. Such changes in fungal morphology between hosts have important ramifications for the morphologically based taxonomy of this group. 相似文献

Proteome variation among natural populations along an environmental gradient may provide insights into how the biological functions of species are related to their local adaptation. We investigated protein expression in five stream stonefly species from four geographic regions along a latitudinal gradient in Japan with varying climatic conditions. The extracted proteins were separated by two‐dimensional gel electrophoresis and identified by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization of time‐of‐flight (MALDI TOF/TOF), yielding 446 proteins. Low interspecies variation in the proteome profiles was observed among five species within geographical regions, presumably due to the co‐occurring species sharing the environments. However, large spatial variations in protein expression were found among four geographic regions, suggesting strong regulation of protein expression in heterogeneous environments, where the spatial variations were positively correlated with water temperature. We identified 21 unique proteins expressed specifically in a geographical region and six common proteins expressed throughout all regions. In warmer regions, metabolic proteins were upregulated, whereas proteins related to cold stress, the photoperiod, and mating were downregulated. Oxygen‐related and energy‐production proteins were upregulated in colder regions with higher altitudes. Thus, our proteomic approach is useful for identifying and understanding important biological functions related to local adaptations by populations of stoneflies. 相似文献

The compilation of a DNA barcoding library of Norwegian stonefly (Plecoptera) species revealed that Leuctra fusca (Linnaeus, 1758) and Leuctra digitata Kempny, 1899 (Leuctridae) share haplotypes in northernmost Scandinavia. Phylogenetic analyses of the mitochondrial (mt) DNA barcode marker COI and the nuclear marker 28S show that the shared haplotypes must result from the introgression of a L. fusca mitochondrion into a L. digitata population on at least two occasions. Although mt introgression is widespread in animals, this represents the first documented case in Plecoptera. This study also included specimens of L. cf. fusca from the Sierra Nevada massif in Spain, a population previously known as L. carpentieri Despax, 1945. Their mt haplotypes are ca. 13% different from other European L. fusca. However, their 28S alleles are compatible with their morphological identification as L. fusca. In view of the possibility of mt introgression, the taxonomic status of this population remains undecided. 相似文献

The temporal occurrence and dispersal of stoneflies were investigated at a forest stream in the South Island, New Zealand. Although 12 species were taken in Malaise traps, only Spaniocerca zelandica and Cristaperla fimbria (Notonemouridae) were abundant. Adults of S. zelandica were present throughout the year and a wide range of different-sized nymphs, including very small individuals, was also found in all months. In contrast, the emergence period of C. fimbria was limited to about four months in summer and as nymphs are mainly hyporheic, few were taken in Surber samples. Malaise trapping on a 16 m long transect away from the stream and with more distantly located traps in forest and grassland resulted in a very high proportion of males and females of both species being caught within 1 m of the stream edge. Captured females of both species included immature, gravid, and spent individuals. Males and females of both species had almost identical diets dominated by sooty mould fungi, fungal spores, pollen and fine particulate organic matter. High proportions of them were also infected by the encysted larvae of a gordian worm (Nematomorpha) and may be important vectors in its life cycle. 相似文献

1. The life cycle of Leuctra nigra (Olivier) took 2 years in a small stream in the English Lake District and the exponential growth of the larvae was scarcely affected by variations in water temperature (range 4.2-14.0°C). Mean growth rates for three year-classes were 0.43±0.01, 0.42±0.01, 0.39±0.05% body length day?1. There were thirteen or fourteen larval instars for males and fourteen or fifteen for females. The ratio between successive instars was a constant 1.20 (conformed with Dyar's rule). 2. Larval growth and mortality were exponential at six constant temperatures (5.9, 8.2, 12.1, 15.8, 18.2, 19.8°C) in the laboratory. Mean growth rates (% body length day?1) increased directly with temperature from 0.37 (5.9°C) to 0.55 (19.8°C). Mean mortality rates (% day?1) increased directly with temperature from 0.20 (5.9°C) to 0.26 (12.1°C) and then markedly increased to 0.54-0.58 at the three higher temperatures. Only 7-10% of animals completed their life cycle at the three higher temperatures compared with 23–27% at the three lower temperatures. Egg production also decreased considerably at the higher temperatures. 3. As growth rates in the stream and laboratory were similar at similar temperatures (<14°C), the optimum conditions for growth in the laboratory were probably similar to those in the stream; therefore resources such as food and space were not restricting growth in the stream. 4. The implications of the temperature-induced changes in growth and mortality are discussed and it is concluded that although the life cycle can change from semivoltine to univoltine with increasing temperature, the costs of a univoltine life cycle are high in terms of survival and egg production, both of which decreased markedly between 12.1 and 15.8°C. Therefore the optimum habitat for this species appears to be a summer cool stream (maximum temperature <14°C) and the optimal life cycle appears to be about 2 years from egg to adult. 相似文献

The gut content composition of three species of the superfamily Perloidea, Marthamea selysii (Pictet, 1842), Dinocras cephalotes (Curtis, 1827), and Siphonoperla torrentium (Pictet, 1842), from northwestern Spain is analyzed and described. The quantity of food found in all adults of M. selysii and D. cephalotes was very low. Spores of fungi and pollen of angiosperms were the most abundant components in the diet of M. selysii. Pollen of angiosperms, followed by fungal spores, detritus, and animal matter were the most abundant components in the diet of both sexes of D. cephalotes. The adult diet of both sexes of S. torrentium consists mainly of pollen and agrees with data of the previous studies on this same species in other areas. Our results also show that the consumption of animal matter could be a way to get a nutritional complement and is more common than previously considered in adult stoneflies. The obtained data support the hypothesis that adult feeding is less important for large stoneflies (as M. selysii and D. cephalotes) than for other smaller Perloidea (as S. torrentium), but feeding habits in these large Plecoptera could not be as negligible as previously supposed. 相似文献

To comprehend the diversity and potential control of soil-dwelling fungi, Isaria and Paecilomyces, against the red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta (Hymenoptera, Formicidae), an investigation was carried out between 2004 and 2008. From 258 soil samples collected from 16 central and southern provinces and cities in China, a total of 171 isolates of the genra Isaria and Paecilomyce were isolated, and the species I. javanicus, P. marquandii and I. fumosoroseus were found more abundant than I. cateniobliquus, P. carneus, P. inflatus and P. lilacinus. Geographic differences of isolating rates were observed as well. Samples from the southern areas had higher fungal isolating rates than those from the central areas. Subsequently, 47 isolates were further tested for pathogencity against the red imported fire ant. All isolates except P115 showed certain pathogenic potential (the mean is 52.3% at 4000 conidiospores/mL) to the ant. I. javanicus was the most effective species with a mean pathogenicity of 80.6%, while pathogenicities of P. marquandii, P. gunni and I. fumosoroseus were 44, 21 and 49%, respectively. Furthermore, the more effective isolates P028 of I. javanicus and P003 of I. fumosoroseus were tested in a virulence experiment. The LD50 values of P028 and P003 against major and miner workers were determined as 412,280 and 854,451 conidiospores/cm2, respectively. Meanwhile, the LT50 values at 1000 conidiospores/cm2 were 7.1 and 6.6 d in isolate P003 and 6.8 and 6.6 d in isolate P028. 相似文献

The purpose of our study was to compare on a seasonal basis the emergence, the drift and the benthos on a short and uniform section (18.5 m)of a stream in the Laurentian Hills of Québec. Nineteen species occurred on this stretch, but only six were abundant: Leptophlebia cupida (Say), Habrophlebia vibrans Needham, Baetis pygmaeus (Hagen), Eurylophella verisimilis (McDunnough), Stenonema modestum (Banks), and Stenonema vicarium (Walker). Emergence was monitored for 5 years; densities differed from one trap to the next, as did species dominance, but total densities were similar. These data conform to Illies' rules of constancy and harmony. Nymphal densities were high (mean of 16000 m−2 ). The dominant species were univoltine, except H. vibrans (semivoltine), and B. pygmaeus (polyvoltine). Larger species contributed relatively more to the production of the reach despite their low densities than did the more abundant smaller species, especially those with long life cycles. Drift was low during most of the year, except during spring and species composition varied considerably. A comparison of the three data sets (emergence, drift and benthos) shows a general agreement for the less abundant species, but for three of the dominants, H. vibrans, L. cupida and E. verisimilis , movements of individuals to and from the reach at various times in the life cycle (adult flight, nymphal drift and migration) must be taken into account in order to correlate the data. None of the methods alone gives a satisfactory picture of the community structure, each is to some extent misleading and needs to be used in conjunction with the others; the conflicting results obtained from the data sets often reveal interesting life history traits which otherwise would not have been detected. 相似文献

1. Parasites can affect the communities of their hosts; and hosts, in turn, shape communities of parasites and other symbionts. This makes host–symbiont relationships a key but often overlooked aspect of community ecology. 2. Mites associated with bees have a range of lifestyles; however, little is known about mites associated with wild bees or about factors influencing the make‐up of bee‐associated mite communities. This study investigated how mite communities associated with bumble bees (Bombus spp.) are shaped by the Bombus community and geographic proximity. 3. Bees were collected from 15 sites in Ontario, Canada, and examined for mites. Mite abundance and species richness increased with local bee abundance. Several bee species also differed in mite abundance, species richness, prevalence, and diversity. Locally uncommon species tended to have more mites than other bees. Queen bees had the most mites, and males had more mites than workers. 4. Spatial proximity was not a predictor of mite community composition, despite a strong effect of proximity on bee community similarity. 5. On the 11 Bombus spp. examined, 33 mite species were found. Whereas nearly half of these mite species are obligate associates of bumble bees, none was restricted to particular Bombus species. 6. The best predictor of mite community composition was bee identity. Although many parasite communities show strong geographic patterns, the communities of primarily commensalistic bee‐mites in this study did not. These findings have implications for bumble bee conservation, given that pollen‐feeding commensals might become harmful at high densities or act as disease vectors. 相似文献

Studies on the life cycle and growth ofIsoperia grammatica andI. difformis from eight southern Swedish streams demonstrated that the former species shows greater between-stream differences than the latter species.I. grammatica larvae had typically two periods of rapid growth, autumn and spring, whileI. difformis larvae grew mainly in autumn-winter. In one of the streams, however,I grammatica grew rapidly throughout all winter. Maximum larval size differed between streams, and so did the timing of the first appearance of nymphs and nymphal maturation. Temperature was probably the most influential factor explaining all these differences. While sexual dimorphism inI. grammatica is slight but significant, it is very prominent inI. difformis. The sizes of larvae overlapped little between species as well as sexes suggesting that intra- and interspecific competition was, or had been, important. InI. grammatica this reduced overlap was expressed in several size-classes of males and females successively replacing each other, resulting in a meandering pattern of the size distribution charts. There were additional indications of possible interactions, such as a significant negative correlation between the densities of the two species. 相似文献

Ohio is an eastern USA state that historically was >70% covered in upland and mixed coniferous forest; about 60% of it glaciated by the Wisconsinan glacial episode. Its stonefly fauna has been studied in piecemeal fashion until now. The assemblage of Ohio stoneflies was assessed from over 4,000 records accumulated from 18 institutions, new collections, and trusted literature sources. Species richness totaled 102 with estimators Chao2 and ICE Mean predicting 105.6 and 106.4, respectively. Singletons and doubletons totaled 18 species. All North American families were represented with Perlidae accounted for the highest number of species at 34. The family Peltoperlidae contributed a single species. Most species had univoltine-fast life cycles with the vast majority emerging in summer, although there was a significant component of winter stoneflies. Nine United States Geological Survey hierarchical drainage units level 6 (HUC6) were used to stratify specimen data. Species richness was significantly related to the number of unique HUC6 locations, but there was no relationship with HUC6 drainage area. A nonparametric multidimensional scaling analysis found that larger HUC6s in the western part of the state had similar assemblages with lower species richness that were found to align with more savanna and wetland habitat. Other drainages having richer assemblages were aligned with upland deciduous and mixed coniferous forests of the east and south where slopes were higher. The Ohio assemblage was most similar to the well-studied fauna of Indiana (88 spp.) and Kentucky (108 spp.), two neighboring states. Many rare species and several high quality stream reaches should be considered for greater protection. 相似文献

Adult caddisflies were collected at 12 sites along a 5 km stretch of a forested headwater stream in southeastern Ghana in March and November 1993 and the catches are related to environmental variables. Some 34,000 specimens, belonging to 178 morphospecies in 43 genera and 11 families, were caught with Malaise traps and light traps. Many species demonstrate differences between sampling method, seasonal occurrence, and sex-ratios, with the light trap in the second wet sunny season (November) being most efficient with respect to the diversity of the catches. A Moran index analysis for global structures indicates a major transition in the fauna from the ravine with waterfalls to the forest, and secondly, a gradient through the forest. A Geary index analysis for local structures indicates further faunal turnovers in the lower reaches of the stream. Species-environment relationships were analyzed through correspondence analysis and co-inertia analysis, allowing ordination of both species and the environment into three zones. The first co-inertia axis reveals a transition between the waterfalls in the open ravine (sites 1–3), and the stream through the riverine forest (sites 4–12), while the second co-inertia axis reveals a gradient from the lotic stream in the moist semi-deciduous forest (sites 4–8) to more lentic stretches of the stream in a gradually more depleted forest (sites 9–12). The most important environmental factors related to the species transition are: riparian moss growth (r=0.94), leaves in the stream substratum (r=0.91), forest type (r=0.90), hygropetric surfaces (r=0.88), bedrock (r=0.87), lotic [riffle] (r=0.85) and lentic [pool] (r=0.85) stretches. The most important environmental factors related to the species gradient are: lotic [riffle] stretches (r=0.92), gravel (r=0.88) and leaves (r=0.85) in the stream substratum, forest type (r=0.81), and agricultural use (r=0.76). Three clusters representing three major environmental zones (zone I, II and III) along the stream are identified by projecting the average species positions on the co-inertia plane. By analyzing the Malaise trap samples significant indicator values are found for 29 species in zone I, 16 species in zone II, and 18 species in zone III. By analyzing the light trap samples significant indicator values are found for 17 species in zone I, 57 species in zone II, and 38 species in zone III. The high diversity of caddisflies in the sanctuary might be reflected both in the geological and climatological history of West Africa, as well as in the recognition of three major environmental zones, and the clean water with high diversity of stream microhabitats favorable for Trichoptera larvae. The closed forest seems to play an important role for the Trichoptera community, and the study demonstrates the importance of protecting forested headwater streams in order to maintain a sustainable aquatic biodiversity in tropical Africa. 相似文献

Taxonomic review of Mycetophagidae Leach (Coleoptera: Tenebrionoidea) in Korea with their host fungi
A taxonomic review of the fungivorous Korean Mycetophagidae is presented. Nine species in four genera belonging to two tribes are presented in Korea. Four species, Eulagius ussuriensis Nikitsky, Litargus japonicus Reitter, Mycetophagus irroratus (Reitter), and Mycetophagus pustulosus (Reitter), are newly recorded in Korea. Most species are associated with the fruiting bodies of higher fungi, fungus‐grown bark, and mold contaminated materials. The Nearctic genus Prostoia (Plecoptera: Nemouridae) is reviewed. Prostoia ozarkensissp. n. is described from the male and female adult stages mainly from the Interior Highland region encompassing portions of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Prostoia ozarkensissp. n. appears most closely related to two species, one distributed broadly across the western Nearctic region, P. besametsa (Ricker), and one found widely throughout the central and eastern Nearctic regions, P. completa (Walker). A surprising range extension is noted for P. hallasi Kondratieff & Kirchner, a species once known only from the Great Dismal Swamp, from small upland streams in southern Illinois. Additional new state records are documented for P. besametsa, P. completa, P. hallasi and P. similis (Hagen). Taxonomic keys to Prostoia males and females are provided, and scanning electron micrographs of adult genitalia of all species are given. 相似文献

Twenty years of research on community composition and species distribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in China: a review 总被引:1,自引:2,他引:1
The biodiversity and distribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in different ecosystems and plant communities in China has received increasing interest over the past decades. This has led to a steady increase in the number of scientific papers published on this topic. Studies have surveyed AMF-colonizing rhizospheres of most families of angiosperms, bryophytes, pteridophytes, and gymnosperms. China has about 30,000 plant species (one eighth of the plant species worldwide). A total of 104 AMF species within nine genera, including 12 new species, have been reported in environments such as croplands, grasslands, forests, and numerous disturbed environments. In this paper, we review data published over the past 20 years on AMF community composition and species distribution, the mycorrhizal status of plants, AMF spore communities in different habitats, and germplasm collections in China. Possible future trends in the study of the biodiversity of AMF are also briefly discussed. In particular, the aim of our review is to make some of the recent work published in the Chinese literature accessible to a wider international audience. 相似文献

Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana sensu lato were isolated, from 7 and 41 % of soil samples from a commercial banana field, with average fungal density of 4.3 × 103 and 8.2 × 103 CFU g?1 soil, respectively. Twenty-one morphologically distinct B. bassiana and four M. anisopliae sensu lato isolates from different plots within the field were further characterized. ISSR fingerprinting revealed six different clusters for B. bassiana, whereas gene sequencing revealed three M. anisopliae sensu stricto and one unclassified Metarhizium sp. Bioassays with one or more representative isolates from each Metarhizium species and B. bassiana cluster showed that all indigenous isolates had lower virulence and significantly greater ST50s than reference (exotic) isolates. The data suggest that the low virulence of most indigenous isolates toward Cosmopolites sordidus adults and their relatively low density in soil samples, may help explain the low occurrence of epizootics caused by entomopathogenic fungi in populations of this pest, also known to burrow under the soil surface in banana plantations. 相似文献
