Cystacanths of the acanthocephalan Bolbosoma balaenae (Gmelin, 1790) were found encapsulated in the cephalothorax of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes couchii (Bell, 1853) from temperate waters in the NE Atlantic Ocean. Euphausiids were caught in locations outside the Ría de Vigo in Galicia, NW Spain, and prevalence of infection was up to 0.1%. The parasite was identified by morphological characters. Cystacanths were 8.09 ± 2.25 mm total length (mean ± SD) and had proboscises that consisted of 22 to 24 longitudinal rows of hooks, each of which had 8 or 9 hooks per row including 2 or 3 rootless ones in the proboscis base and 1 field of small hooks in the prebulbar part. Phylogenetic analyses of 18S rDNA and cytocrome c oxidase subunit I revealed a close relationship with other taxa of the family Polymorphidae (Meyer, 1931). The results extend northwards ot the known distribution of B. balaenae. Taxonomic affiliation of parasites and trophic ecology in the sampling area suggest that N. couchii is the intermediate host for B. balenae, and we suggest that the whales Balaenoptera physalus (Linnaeus, 1758) and B. acutorostrata (Lacepède, 1804) are its definitive hosts. This life cycle is probably completed with or without paratenic hosts.  相似文献

Cystacanths of Hexaglandula corynosoma were discovered in the fiddler crabs Uca spinicarpa and Uca rapax collected in Mississippi and Florida. Adults were present in yellow-crowned night herons, Nyctanassa violacea, collected in Florida. Cystacanths are very similar to adults, varying only in size and state of development. This is the first record of H. corynosoma from the United States and the first record of an intermediate host for any species of the genus. Cystacanths of Arhythmorhynchus frassoni were present in U. rapax from Florida. The proboscis size, shape, and armature of the cystacanths are identical to those of adults from clapper rails (Rallus longirostris) collected in several southeastern states. This is the first report of an intermediate host for A. frassoni. Profilicollis altmani cystacanths were collected from mole crabs (Emerita talpoida) at Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. These specimens, together with adults obtained from shore birds in Louisiana and Mississippi, are consistent with the view that P. altmani, Profilicollis kenti, and Profilicollis texensis are synonyms, with P. altmani having nomenclatural priority.  相似文献

Various processes can generate associations between the larvae of different helminth species in their fish intermediate or paratenic host. We investigated the pairwise associations among larval helminth species in eight different fish populations, using two different coefficients of associations, in order to determine in what situations they are strongest. All helminth species included use the fish studied as either their second intermediate host or their paratenic host, and are acquired by the fish when it ingests an infected first intermediate host. The intensity of infection correlated positively with fish length for most helminth species. Pairs of species which both exhibited positive correlations with fish length tended to be more strongly associated with one another, although this tendency was not pronounced. Similarity in life cycle had a more important influence on pairwise associations. Among the 62 pairwise associations that could be computed, pairs of helminth species that shared both first intermediate hosts and definitive hosts were the most strongly associated, followed by pairs that shared only one other host, and finally by pairs that did not share other hosts. The results suggest that assemblages of larval helminth parasites in fish are not random collections of locally available species, but rather structured packets of larval parasites that travel together along common transmission routes.  相似文献

The transmission of nematode parasites of vertebrates is reviewed with special reference to the phenomena of monoxeny, heteroxeny, paratenesis, and precocity. Monoxeny is divided into 2 types. Primary monoxeny assumes that there was never an intermediate host in the transmission. Secondary monoxeny assumes the loss of an intermediate host during the course of evolution and its replacement by a tissue phase in the final host. Heteroxeny, or the use of intermediate hosts, is a common feature of many nematode groups. The Spirurida utilize arthropods, the Metastrongyloidea molluscs, and Ascaridida arthropods and vertebrates. Paratenesis, or the use of transport hosts, is a common feature of the transmission of nematode parasites of carnivores. It is postulated that in some instances paratenic hosts have become intermediate hosts and replaced the original intermediate host. Precocity in the development of nematodes in intermediate hosts (including what may have been paratenic hosts) is defined as growth and/or development beyond the expected. Its occurrence among the nematode parasites of vertebrates is reviewed. It is regarded as a transmission strategy which accelerates gamete production in the final host. Precocity could also provide the mechanism for the transfer of a parasite from a predator final host to a prey final host.  相似文献

Abstract. Details of the life cycle of freshwater nematomorphs (gordiids) remain unclear. Free-living aquatic larval gordiids must make a critical transition from an epibenthic aquatic environment to terrestrial hosts. In order to identify potential hosts capable of bridging this ecological gap, the specificity of paratenic hosts of three common species of North American gordiids was investigated. All three species were characterized by an identical infection pattern: low host specificity. Gordiids were able to encyst within annelids, mollusks, crustaceans, insects and a vertebrate. Three species of putative host (a turbellarian, a water mite, and a mosquito larva) were not infected with any of the gordiid species. Internal defense reactions (IDR) and feeding behaviors are implicated as preventing infection in these species. Several of the other host species produced either an IDR or an immune reaction to the cysts, although reactions to the cysts were highly variable between species. In most species, IDR did not cause noticeable harm to the encysted larvae. It is proposed that although many species are easily infected with gordiid cysts, most do not act as natural paratenic hosts. For some of these host groups, especially snails, a role as reservoir host is suggested. Of all hosts included in this study, aquatic insects were identified as the hosts likely responsible for spanning the ecological gap and acting as true hosts for gordiids.  相似文献

The relationship of fish age class to parasitism by Paulisentis missouriensis was determined by sampling at least 29 creek chubs, Semotilus atromaculatus, from Easly Creek, Richardson County, Nebraska, every month from February 1996 to March 1997. In general, mean abundance and prevalence of the acanthocephalans increased with the age or length of chubs. It is unlikely that this distribution is explained by increased consumption of intermediate hosts by older, larger fish or by predatory fish acquiring parasites from paratenic hosts. The intermediate host for P. missouriensis is the cyclopoid copepod Acanthocyclops robustus, and creek chubs do not consume more microscopic crustaceans as they age or grow. Instead, the percentage of fish in the diet of creek chubs increases. Furthermore, P. missouriensis apparently does not use paratenic hosts. In laboratory infections, P. missouriensis survived predation of its original definitive host and transferred to the predator. Postcyclically transmitted P. missouriensis survived at least 14 days in the intestine of creek chubs, where they localized around the first flexure beyond the stomach. All stages of development of both sexes were transferred successfully. Postcyclic transmission is a plausible explanation, in some cases, for the greater worm burden frequently observed in older, larger hosts and for the occurrence in top carnivores of parasites not known to have paratenic hosts. This method of transmission appears to result in distribution of acanthocephalans to groups of animals that otherwise would be inaccessible.  相似文献

Transmammary infection with Alaria marcianae mesocercariae was demonstrated using mice as model, paratenic hosts. Prenatal transmission was ruled out because neonates removed immediately postpartum from infected dams were never infected. Mesocercarial distribution in virgin females and in females examined immediately postpartum showed no marked preference for the mammary glands. In contrast, infection of neonates that were allowed to suckle on infected dams was absolute, and the number of mesocercariae in the mammary glands of postparturient dams that suckled their young was increased significantly. These experimental observations were coupled with other observations on paratenic hosts to outline the pathways open to mesocercariae in gravid hosts. The term amphiparatenic host is coined for those host species that are paratenic hosts as adults, but as juveniles can serve as definitive hosts.  相似文献

In Lake Mascardi (Patagonia), 2 acanthocephalan species, Acanthocephalus tumescens and Pseudocorynosoma sp., share an amphipod intermediate host but have different definitive hosts. Because both acanthocephalan species are potentially capable of manipulating amphipod behavior, one of the parasites may, therefore, have no opportunity to complete its life cycle; accordingly, negative interactions between them can be expected. The purpose of the present work was to examine the possibility of competition in the intermediate host through a comparison of A. tumescens and Pseudocorynosoma sp. cystacanth volume. Specimens of the amphipod Hyalella patagonica were collected monthly over almost 2 yr. Amphipods were measured (total length), necropsied, and cystacanths collected. Cystacanths were also measured, and their volume was calculated. Size of both acanthocepalan species was positively associated with amphipod total length. Competition, during 3 different infection periods, was assessed: high level of Pseudocorynosoma sp. infection (HP), high level of A. tumescens infection (HA), and high level of mixed infection (HM). In Pseudocorynosoma sp., intra-specific competition in HM was the only interaction found. In contrast, in A. tumescens, inter-specific competition in HP, intra-specific competion in HA, and intra- and inter-specific competition in HM were found. We suggest that Pseudocorynosoma sp. is a non-plastic species mostly found in single infections, while A. tumescens is a more variable species occurring more frequently in co-infections.  相似文献

In aquatic ecosystems, fish play a key role in parasite accumulation and transmission to predacious animals. In the present study, realized on seven populations of a small cyprinid fish species, the European bitterling Rhodeus amarus, we investigated (1) the role of the European bitterling as a potential intermediate or paratenic host, (2) the ability of the fish to accumulate parasites with similar final host group, and (3) its significance as a potential source of parasite infection in the ecosystem in respect to habitat characteristics. A total of 36 parasite species were recorded; 31 species (90% of all parasite specimens) were classified as endoparasites. Most of the endoparasites were found in the larval life stage, using bitterling as an intermediate or paratenic host. In particular, parasite community structure showed significantly higher proportions of allogenic parasites in comparison with autogenic. The supposed co-occurrence of parasite species with identical final host groups showed only a weak association. The adjacent reservoir areas were a significant determinant of both the total and infracommunity parasite species richness and for the mean parasite abundance. No relationship between the distance of sampling site from the adjacent reservoir and parasite community characteristics was found. As a small-sized fish with a wide distribution range and high local abundances, the European bitterling can represent a natural prey for a wide range of piscivorous predators. Due to its susceptibility to the number of larval endoparasites, this fish species may therefore fulfill the role as important transmitter of parasites to their final hosts.  相似文献

Two species of Mothocya Costa, in Hope, 1851 are reported from the Virgin Islands. Mothocya xenobranchia Bruce, 1986 was collected from St. John Island from the gills of the Atlantic needlefish, Strongylura marina, which is a new locality record and also confirms a previously uncertain host identity. Mothocya bertlucy sp. n. is described from St. Thomas, St John and Guana Islands, from the gills of the redlip blenny, Ophioblennius macclurei, the first record of a blenny as host for any Mothocya. The distinguishing characters of Mothocya bertlucy sp. n. include its small size (< 9 mm) and eyes, the slender pleotelson with a narrowly rounded caudomedial point, extended uropod peduncle and uropods which do not extend past the pleotelson posterior margin, and the narrow pleon which is only slightly overlapped by pereonite 7.  相似文献

The fine and ultrafine structure of the capsules surrounding the acanthocephalan Corynosoma strumosum in natural paratenic hosts of three species—the whitespotted greenling Hexagrammos stelleri, Steller’s sculpin Myoxocephalus stelleri, and the saffron cod Eleginus gracilis—was studied. The results of this study, together with earlier data, support the hypothesis that the structure of the capsule depends on the paratenic host species. Three types of capsules differing in the ratio of fibroblasts and inflammatory cells have been identified: fibroblastic (in Japanese smelt, rainbow smelt, and saffron cod), intermediate (in whitespotted greenling), and leukocytic (in Steller’s sculpin and the yellowfin sole). It was assumed that the structure of the capsule is determined by the degree of mutual adaptation of organisms in a given host-parasite system.  相似文献

Larval helminths in intermediate hosts often stop growing long before their growth is limited by host resources, and do not grow at all in paratenic hosts. We develop our model [Ball, M.A., Parker, G.A., Chubb, J.C., 2008. The evolution of complex life cycles when parasite mortality is size- or time-dependent. J. Theor. Biol. 253, 202-214] for optimal growth arrest at larval maturity (GALM) in trophically transmitted helminths. This model assumes that on entering an intermediate host, larval death rate initially has both time- (or size-) dependent and time-constant components, the former increasing as the larva grows. At GALM, mortality changes to a new and constant rate in which the size-dependent component is proportional to that immediately before GALM. Mortality then remains constant until death or transmission to the definitive host. We analyse linear increasing and accelerating forms for time-dependent mortality to deduce why there is sometimes growth (intermediate hosts) and sometimes no growth (paratenic hosts). Calling i the intermediate or paratenic host, and j the definitive host, conditions favouring paratenicity are: (i) high values in host i for size at establishment, size-related mortality, expected intensity, (ii) low values in host i for size-independent mortality rate, potential growth rate, transmission rate to j, and ratio of death rate in j/growth rate in j. Opposite conditions favour growth in the (intermediate) host, either to GALM or until death without GALM. We offer circumstantial evidence from the literature supporting some of these predictions. In certain conditions, two of the three possible growth strategies (no growth; growth to an optimal size then growth arrest (GALM); unlimited growth until larval death) can exist as local optima. The effect of the discontinuity in death rate after GALM is complex and depends on mortality and growth parameters in the two hosts, and on the mortality functions before and after GALM.  相似文献

The trematode Curtuteria australis uses the whelk Cominella glandiformis as first intermediate host and the cockle Austrovenus stutchburyi as second intermediate host before maturing in shorebirds. The whelk also happen to be an important predator of cockles on intertidal mudflats. In this study we show that whelks can act as temporary paratenic hosts for the trematode. A single whelk feeding on 1 cockle can ingest large numbers of metacercariae, which remain within the whelk for 1-3 days before passing out in feces. The viability of these metacercariae assessed as the percentage capable of successfully excysting under conditions simulating those inside a bird's digestive tract, is lower after passage through a whelk (48%) than before (59%). Still, given that shorebird definitive hosts prey on whelks as well as cockles, survival inside the whelk allows C. australis to complete its life cycle: overall, though, whelk predation is likely to be an important sink for the trematode population. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a trematode using a snail as both first intermediate host and paratenic host, offering an alternative transmission route for the parasite as a result of the unusual trophic relationships of its hosts.  相似文献

The metazoan parasite fauna of two species of freshwater fishes Aplocheilus panchax and A. melastigma collected from a stream at Waltair is compared; 17 parasite species were found. Aplocheilus panchax served as a host to 13 parasite species and A. melastigma to 10 parasite species. Of the 17 parasites collected, 12 were larval helminths to which the fishes act as intermediate and paratenic hosts. This has been attributed to the interaction between terrestrial birds, mammals and fishes in determining the parasite fauna in the biocoenosis. The parasite fauna of these fishes is divided into typical and less typical according to their frequencies. Among less typical there are peripheral division parasites which are abundant in other fishes in the stream. Only six parasite species occurred in both A. panchax and A. melastigma and both fish shared most of their parasite fauna with other fishes. Differences in the parasite fauna of these fishes are attributed to the morphological, behavioural or ecological features of these fishes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Cross-transmission experiments were performed in order to determine the host specificity in the intermediate and definitive hosts of the four described dihomoxenous Sarcocystis species, S. gallotiae, S. stehlinii, S. simonyi , and S. dugesii from lacertid lizards of the genera Gallotia and Podarcis from the Macaronesian Islands. Sarcocysts of either species from experimentally infected lizards were fed to a variety of laboratory-bred lizard species of the genera Gallotia, Lacerta , and Podarcis . These sarcocysts proved to be infectious to all examined animals, showing no definitive host specificity in the tested genera. Lizards of the genera Chalcides and Tarentola , however, were not susceptible definitive hosts for S. gallotiae . The inoculation of experimentally obtained sporocysts of each of the four Sarcocystis species to various lacertid lizard species revealed varying degrees of intermediate host specificity, generally demonstrating each native host to be the most susceptible.  相似文献

Common sculpins Cottus gobio L. (Pisces: Cottidae), from the Mlynsky Brook near Ceské Zleby in the Sumava National Park, southwestern Bohemia, Czech Republic, were found to harbour in their intestines juvenile cestodes Proteocephalus longicollis (Zeder, 1800), a common parasite of holarctic salmonids, with a prevalence of 60% and intensity of 1 to 11 (mean 5) parasites per fish; undoubtedly, these prey fish serve as paratenic hosts. In this locality, the definitive host of P. longicollis is the brown trout Salmo trutta m. fario L., large specimens of which apparently acquire infection of this parasite by feeding on infected sculpins. C. gobio is the first known natural paratenic host of P. longicollis in Europe.  相似文献
