Native mussels, Diplodon chilensis, were sampled from four lakes in Nahuel Huapi National Park, Northern Patagonia, Argentina in order to evaluate heavy-metal
distribution in the region and to assess the contribution of this compartment of the trophic web to their circulation in the
food chain. The concentration of potential pollutants Ag, As, Cr, Hg, Sb, and Se, and other nine elements of interest (Ba,
Br, Ca, Co, Cs, Fe, Na, Sr, and Zn) were determined in Diplodon chilensis pooled samples. Digestive glands were analyzed separately from soft tissues. Geological tracers Sc, Ta, Th, and rare earth
elements were also determined in order to discriminate lithophile contributions. Elemental concentrations of Ba, Br, Fe, Sr,
Se, and Zn in total soft tissues samples do not show significant differences among sampling sites. Arsenic and Cr contents
in total soft tissues and digestive gland pooled samples are higher in sampling points close to zones with human settlements.
Silver contents in samples collected in Lake Nahuel Huapi were higher than in the other lakes studied, and up to 50-fold higher
than the sample collected in Lake Traful, considered as the reference. Mercury highest concentration values measured in total
soft tissues pooled samples from lakes Nahuel Huapi and Moreno were found to be similar to those observed in other reported
Hg contamination situations, and they are three to five times higher than those of the reference samples collected in Lake

Although dam removal has become an increasingly popular tool for river restoration, there is limited knowledge regarding the ecological effects of dam removal. The purpose of our study was to document feeding habits of coexisting brook charr, brown trout, and rainbow trout above and below a dam that is in the process of a staged removal. Modification of sediment transport caused by Stronach Dam since 1912 has affected stream channel configuration, fish habitat, and many other physical and biological processes. In order to document salmonine feeding habits above and below the dam, we selected zones to represent downstream conditions and areas of river upstream of the dam that encompassed the original reservoir and a stretch of river further upstream that was not hydraulically influenced by the dam. Because physical habitat largely governs aquatic community composition in streams, we expected these effects to be reflected in the fish and macroinvertebrate communities. In particular, we expected limited prey availability and salmonine feeding in the impacted upstream and downstream zones characterized by fine substrate composition and greater macroinvertebrate diversity and salmonine feeding opportunities in the non-impacted zone characterized by coarse substrate. We also expected mean percent wet stomach content weights to be higher downstream, as other studies have documented an increase in piscivory on blocked migratory prey species downstream of dams. Contrary to expectations, the downstream zone of the river contained the highest abundance of drifting invertebrate taxa and, although differences in habitat occurred among the zones, the diversity of drifting macroinvertebrates and stomach contents of salmonines were similar throughout the river. Thus, in this case, the presence of altered habitat caused by a dam did not appear to negatively affect salmonine food habits. Consequently, we expect no major changes in salmonine food habits after the dam removal is completed. 相似文献

Synopsis The longitudinal distribution ofSalmo trutta andGalaxias olidus, a small salmoniform fish, was mapped over four summers (1985–1988) in the upper reaches of the Lerderderg River, an intermittent stream in central Victoria. Over the four successive summers of the study, the distribution ofS. trutta expanded upstream. Coincident with the expansion ofS. trutta was a contraction in the distribution ofG. olidus upstream. In the summer of 1988, an extended dry spell resulted in high levels ofS. trutta mortality at the upstream limits of their distribution. This suggested that the upstream distribution ofS. trutta could ultimately be constrained by an inability to tolerate prolonged periods of low stream flow and high temperatures that tended to occur in the headwaters of the stream. A study of summer mortality was conducted over three successive summers (1989–1991) at three reaches along the river. The two downstream reaches contained onlyS. trutta, the upstream reach contained bothS. trutta andG. olidus. Salmo trutta mortality was consistently higher at the most upstream reach compared with lower reaches. High levels ofS. trutta mortality at the two downstream reaches were only observed in 1991, a particularly dry year. In contrast,G. olidus survived in scattered small pools throughout the upper reaches of the stream. The results of the study suggest a shifting pattern ofS. trutta andG. olidus distribution determined by the duration of low stream flow periods and summer high temperatures. 相似文献

The diet of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) and rainbow trout (S. gairdneri Richardson) in Rutland Water were compared during the first two fishing seasons (April–October 1977 and 1978).Fortnightly samples of approximately forty stomachs were obtained from boat and bank, rod-and-line caught trout giving a total of 1046 stomachs over the two seasons.During 1977 seasonal changes in the diet were divided into two phases; the first being a period of abundant drowned terrestrial food until June. This was followed by a period of more stable water level from July onwards when chironomid larvae and pupae were consistently the most important food items and the diversity of food also increased.In 1978 the proportion of chironomid pupae and larvae declined and they were replaced in the diet by Gammarus and Asellus. 相似文献

We describe the age-0 brown trout (Salmo trutta) collected from a mountain stream downstream from a reservoir in June, July, and August 1990. Sample sites were 1, 12, and 20 km downstream from the reservoir at elevations of 2840, 2600, and 2230 m above mean sea level. The mean length of fish in the samples increased with downstream progression and from June through August. Zooplankton predominated the diet of fish collected in June from the most upstream sampling site, while Diptera larvae predominated the diet of fish from more downstream sampling sites in June. In July and August, the diet of fish from the upstream site was predominated by Diptera larvae, while the diet of fish from the other two sites was predominated by Ephemeroptera nymphs. Variation in diet among sampling sites and sampling months was related not only to increasing fish sizes over the summer but also to the availability of zooplankton flushed from the reservoir. 相似文献

The Japanese kelp Undaria pinnatifida was found on 7th September 2005 in Ría Deseado (Santa Cruz, Argentina). This invasive algae was registered from the lower intertidal to the upper levels of the subtidal zone. The sporophytes were fixed to slabs, gravel and rocks of variable sizes and were also present as epibionts of tunicates. The sporophytes total length ranged between 3 and 88 cm, with a mean of 28.75 cm in the intertidal and 38.3 cm in the subtidal. The density and biomass increased from the intertidal to the subtidal. The kelp population showed a higher number of small immature individuals in the intertidal than␣subtidal where the organisms were bigger and with more individual biomass. This first record of U. pinnatifida in Southern Patagonia extends its southern distribution limit in Argentina, showing progressive expansion in the southwestern Atlantic. More surveys must be conducted to understand the evolution of U. pinnatifida invasion and its impact on the native benthic community. 相似文献

The proposal that plasma ammonia accumulation might impair the swimming performance of fish was first made over a decade ago, and has now proven to be the case for a number of salmonid species. The first experimental evidence was indirect, when a negative linear relationship between plasma ammonia concentrations and maximum sustainable swimming speed (U(crit)) was found following the exposure of brown trout (Salmo trutta) to sub-lethal concentrations of copper in soft acidic water. Since then, negative linear relationships between plasma ammonia concentration and U(crit) have been demonstrated following exposure of brown trout, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) to elevated water ammonia. For brown trout, the relationships between plasma ammonia and U(crit) were remarkably similar following either exposure to elevated water ammonia or to sub-lethal copper. This indicates that the impairment of swimming performance resulting from exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of heavy metals may be attributable in large part to an accumulation of endogenous ammonia. The negative relationship between plasma ammonia concentration and U(crit) was similar in size-matched rainbow and brown trout but, under similar regimes of ammonia exposure, rainbow trout were able to maintain a significantly lower plasma ammonia concentration, revealing inter-specific differences in ammonia permeability and/or transport. One primary mechanism by which ammonia accumulation may impair exercise performance is a partial depolarisation of membrane potential in tissues such as the brain and white muscle. This may prejudice the co-ordination of swimming movements and reduce or abolish the development of muscle tension, thus, compromising swimming efficiency and performance at the top end of the range. 相似文献

Diet, habitat use and relative abundance of pampas fox Pseudalopex gymnocercus were studied in grassland, sand dune, and scrubland habitats, on the Bahía San Blas and Isla Gama Reserve, Argentina. Scat contents showed a generalist diet, where mammals, insects, and fruits were the main food items. Dietary composition differed among habitats; fruits were mainly consumed in sand dunes; insects, mammals, and fruits predominated in grassland; while insects and mammals were frequent in scrubland habitat. The European hare was the most common vertebrate prey and had the major contribution to the biomass of consumed prey. Pampas fox was the most common carnivore of the reserve and used all available habitats, frequenting more regularly scrubland and sand dune than grassland habitat.

Früchte wurden hauptsächlich in Sanddünen konsumiert, Insekten, Säugetiere und Früchte auf Grasflächen; und Insekten und Säugetiere in Strauchhabitaten. Der europäische Hase war die häufigste Beuteart unter den Wirbeltieren und stellte den Hauptanteil an der Biomasse genutzter Beute. Intermediates between two South American species ofGrindelia were found in Chubut Province, Argentina. Twenty eight individual plants with phenotypes ofG. brachystephana, G. chiloensis, or intermediates were collected and studied together with three reference specimens of each of the putative parental species. Discriminant analysis procedure and the computer program HYWIN were applied and results of the two methods are compared. Results demonstrate that most of the specimens collected are of hybrid origin, and that most of the specimens suggested as hybrids are most likely introgressants. Hybridization and introgression are likely the major causes of the high variability previously attributed toG. chiloensis by taxonomists. 相似文献

Synopsis Mercury concentration in axial muscle of brown trout, Salmo trutta, whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, smelt, Osmerus eperlanus and pike, Esox lucius, were studied in Lake Tyrifjorden during 1978–1982. Our data demonstrate that older and bigger fish on an average have higher mercury concentration than smaller and younger. Further, complex life histories as in brown trout influence the pattern of mercury accumulation. During young stages accumulation in brown trout is moderate, while accumulation in older stages is highly correlated to lake residency time. Based on our data we suggest the following requirements for a test organism and the collecting procedure; (1) life history should be simple with small sexual differences, (2) ageing should be easy and reliable, and (3) large representative samples should be easily obtained during (4) a fixed biological period i.e. the spawning period. We consider smelt as an appropriate test organism based on these criteria. 相似文献

Selection of nest-site habitat by a population of wild Lesser Rheas (Rhea pennata pennata) was studied in the northwestern Patagonia steppe, Argentina, during two reproductive seasons (2004/2005 and 2005/2006). Nest spatial distribution was compared with randomly selected points in the study area. Contrary to observations in other ratite species, nest distribution showed an aggregate pattern associated with “mallín” (meadow) areas, which are habitats of higher productivity in the Patagonia steppe. Moreover, similar to observations made on the Greater Rhea (Rhea americana), vegetation cover was higher in nest sites than in randomly selected sites, probably because higher vegetation provides concealment from predators and protection from the strong westerly winds that frequent in this region. Our results reinforce the importance of “mallín” areas for the reproduction and conservation of this threatened ratite species. 相似文献

Crater Lake is a unique environment to evaluate the ecology of introduced kokanee and rainbow trout because of its otherwise
pristine state, low productivity, absence of manipulative management, and lack of lotic systems for fish spawning. Between
1986 and 2004, kokanee displayed a great deal of variation in population demographics with a pattern that reoccurred in about
10 years. We believe that the reoccurring pattern resulted from density dependent growth, and associated changes in reproduction
and abundance, driven by prey resource limitation that resulted from low lake productivity exacerbated by prey consumption
when kokanee were abundant. Kokanee fed primarily on small-bodied prey from the mid-water column; whereas rainbow trout fed
on large-bodied prey from the benthos and lake surface. Cladoceran zooplankton abundance may be regulated by kokanee. And
kokanee growth and reproductive success may be influenced by the availability of Daphnia pulicaria, which was absent in zooplankton samples collected annually from 1990 to 1995, and after 1999. Distribution and diel migration
of kokanee varied over the duration of the study and appeared to be most closely associated with prey availability, maximization
of bioenergetic efficiency, and fish density. Rainbow trout were less abundant than were kokanee and exhibited less variation
in population demographics, distribution, and food habits. There is some evidence that the population dynamics of rainbow

Implementation of the Water Framework Directive requires tools for measuring and monitoring the ecological status of aquatic
ecosystems. Several indices are in use in the Iberian Peninsula, although there has been little comparison among them. We
sampled the fish assemblage and limnological features of the Tordera stream (NE Spain) quarterly from September 2001 to May
2003 to evaluate the usefulness of several fish metrics and to compare habitat quality and biotic indices currently in use.
Data for eight biotic and abiotic indices for this and three other Catalan river basins were also compiled in order to analyse
the relationships among indices. In the Tordera stream, fish abundance and richness increased with stream order except in
the last sampling site that had the lowest fish abundance owing to the effects of drought and water abstraction. Although
most indices were positively correlated, some displayed low or null correlations particularly for the Tordera basin which
is more affected by water abstraction and less by pollution; a commonly used physico-chemical index (ISQA) was the least correlated.
In a regional fish index (IBICAT) under development, the brown trout (Salmo trutta) has been previously considered as introduced in the Tordera basin. Here, we report an old published record that demonstrates
that trout was present before 1845 and we argue that its status should be considered as uncertain given the current information
available. Whether brown trout is treated as native or introduced to this river basin has profound effects on the results
of fish metrics because of its dominance in the upper reaches. We briefly discuss the role of introduced species, particularly
in headwater streams, in the development of fish indices. Our study exemplifies the need for careful, basin-specific assessment
of native/introduced status in the development of fish metrics.

Summary Isolated, electrically paced ventricular tissue of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, was examined at 20 and 10°C for the effects of different metabolic inhibitions on isometric force development and cellular content of phosphocreatine, creatine, ATP, ADP and AMP. At 20 relative to 10°C, twitch force was the same, but both twitch development and relaxation occurred over a shorter time and at a considerably higher maximal rate. Inhibition of cellular respiration caused twitch force and phosphocreatine to decrease, both about twice as fast at 20 as at 10°C. This doubling of energy degradation, i.e. in decrease of phosphocreatine, ATP, and loss of twitch force also occurred in preparations in which the energy liberation was totally blocked by iodoacetate in combination with N2 and cyanide; both anaerobic energy degradation and anaerobic energy liberation expressed as lactate production were doubled. The similar effect of temperature on degradation and liberation of energy might explain why loss of twitch force during a 1-h period of anoxia was the same at both temperatures. The latter result was also found in the myocardium of eel Anguilla anguilla. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) display longitudinal and developmental shifts in muscle relaxation rate. This study aimed to determine the role of variations in parvalbumin content in modulating muscle relaxation. Parvalbumin is a low molecular weight protein that buffers myoplasmic Ca2+ and enhances muscle relaxation. In some fish, longitudinal variations in muscle relaxation have been linked to variations in the total amount of parvalbumin present in muscle and in the relative expression of two parvalbumin isoforms. We have demonstrated previously that anterior slow-twitch or red myotomal muscle relaxes more rapidly than that from the posterior for both rainbow and brook trout. Further, younger rainbow trout parr have faster red muscle relaxation rates than older smolts. Here we report similar results for fast-twitch or white muscle. We quantified the parvalbumin expression in red and white muscle from different body positions of rainbow trout parr and smolts and for brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) adults. There was a significant shift in total parvalbumin content of muscle: the faster muscle from the anterior myotome contained greater amounts of parvalbumin. For brook trout, longitudinal variation in relaxation rate was also associated with shifts in the relative expression of the two parvalbumin isoforms. The faster muscle of parr contained more parvalbumin. Lastly, trout white muscle tended to have higher levels of parvalbumin and greater levels of the Parv2 (relative to Parv1) isoform as compared to red muscle. Parvalbumin expression correlated with muscle relaxation rate in trout, although there were species-specific differences in the importance of altering total parvalbumin content versus shifts in relative parvalbumin isoform expression. 相似文献

The identification of pure indigenous fish from hybridised populations represents a key issue in fisheries management and conservation biology. In the present study an approach for selection of purebred marble trout (Salmo trutta marmoratus C.) individuals out of admixed populations was set up and assessed. In a first step, baseline data sets of pure marble trout and pure brown trout specimens based on twelve microsatellite loci were used to simulate five consecutive generations of admixture. The baseline and the resulting simulation data sets were then combined with data of a ‘real’ hybridised marble trout population to perform a single individual assignment test as implemented in STRUCTURE. By this procedure the assignment approach was calibrated and it was possible to compare admixture coefficients obtained for individuals from different populations. The ranking of individual admixture coefficients on a plot and comparison with simulated data revealed that the test population was composed of pure marble trout individuals, first generation hybrids between marble trout and brown trout, and hybrid backcross specimens between both groups. However, by defining a critical q-value of 0.1 and additionally integrating individual sequence data of the mtDNA control region, it was possible to indicate individuals, which could be selected for the establishment of a pure marble trout strain. 相似文献

An analysis of Robertsonian polymorphism and variation in the number of active NORs has been carried out in several populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta) from Northwestern Spain. The karyotype of this species appears to be soundly established, and essentially no variation has been found in chromosome number. Interindividual and interpopulation variation in arm number was detected, with figures ranging between 100 and 102 among individuals, and between 100.10 and 100.80 among populations. This variation in arm number is solely attributable to the polymorphism of the short arm of the main NOR-bearing pair 11, which can appear from acrocentric to metacentric in different individuals. Most populations analyzed showed the standard distribution of active NORs previously observed in this species. The Miño drainage basin, and specially the Chamoso population, showed a multi-chromosomal distribution of active NORs, with several new locations, always telomeric. In most cases no concordance was observed between previously detected rDNA sites in S. trutta and the new Ag-NOR locations. This fact suggests a transposition mechanism rather than an activation of silent rDNA sites to explain this multichromosomal NOR pattern. 相似文献

Summary The release of substance P-like immunoreactive material (SPLI) from the vascularly perfused stomach of the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, was studied. In most cases, SPLI was detected in the collected vascular perfusate during experimental resting conditions. Distensions of the stomach, accomplished by a water-filled intragastric balloon, produced an initial rapid relaxation of the stomach, followed by a slow further relaxation and a stimulation of contractile activity. The amount of SPLI in the vascular perfusate was significantly elevated during the distension period. Tetrodotoxin had no effect on the response to distension or on the release of SPLI during distension, indicating release from tetrodotoxin-insensitive neurons or endocrine cells. The results suggest that a substance P-like peptide may be involved in the contractile response and/or in the maintenance of muscular tone during gastric distensions in the rainbow trout. Infusion of capsaicin had no effect on the release of SPLI. However, capsaicin caused an increase in vascular flow, an effect that could be repeated on a second infusion of capsaicin, indicating that the action may not be specific to sensory neurons.Abbreviations 5-HT
