Human–wildlife interactions are often associated with a myriad of stakeholder groups, intense political scrutiny, and limited biological data, creating complex decision-making situations for wildlife management agencies. Limited research exists on the development and testing of tools (e.g., models to predict the spatial distribution of interactions) to reduce human–black bear (Ursus americanus) interactions (HBI). Available models predicting spatial distribution of HBI are usually developed at scales too large to predict across urban areas, are rarely tested against independent data sets, and usually do not incorporate both landscape and anthropogenic variables. Our objective was to develop a predictive modeling tool that could identify areas of high conflict potential across urban landscapes. We compared locations of HBI in Missoula, MT, recorded by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks from 2003 to 2008, to random locations using logistic regression. The final model discriminated the relative spatial probability of HBI within Missoula well, and a second study area moderately. The probability of HBI in Missoula increased when residents lived close to forested patches and major rivers and streams and in intermediate housing densities (approx. 6.59 houses/ha). Our results provide a wildlife management tool and a repeatable statistical framework that predicts spatial distribution of HBI using only a small set of variables. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

In recent years, landscape liveability has become a leading objective in policy and strategic planning. In the anthropocentric view of landscape, ecosystems fulfil important societal needs similarly to urban systems. Urban systems can meet a variety of such needs through Urban Services, which are historically and typically provided within cities. In this view, Ecosystem Services (ES) and Urban Services (US) influence landscape liveability in a comparable manner, so that liveability assessments based on both ES and US can be effective for landscape planning and policy-making purposes. As liveability is strongly dependent not only on objective landscape features, but also on the subjective perception of stakeholders, their involvement becomes essential for a coherent liveability assessment. The present study aims to develop a LIveability Spatial Assessment Model (LISAM) capable of considering both the local accessibility of services and their perceived relevance as expressed by stakeholders. To this end, a conceptual framework to detangle the spatial relationships between service sources, sinks, and delivery points was developed. From this base, consistent and comparable ES and US indices were calculated using GIS spatialisation techniques and then aggregated hierarchically through a Spatial Multicriteria Decision Making Analysis approach. Results include relevant maps showing explicit spatial indices of liveability that integrate, at various hierarchical levels, the local accessibility of ES and US, along with their local perceived relevance. By calculating complex indices able to highlight both the agri-natural and urban system roles on landscape liveability and by taking subjective and objective aspects into account, the model proved to be effective for spatial decision-making. In future applications, indicator and weight uncertainties should be considered and adequately analysed to assess reliability of the final output. The integration of ecosystem and urban disservices would also be relevant for including those landscape factors that reduce the overall level of place liveability.  相似文献

Visual processing is not determined solely by retinal inputs. Attentional modulation can arise when the internal attentional state (current task) of the observer alters visual processing of the same stimuli. This can influence visual cortex, boosting neural responses to an attended stimulus. Emotional modulation can also arise, when affective properties (emotional significance) of stimuli, rather than their strictly visual properties, influence processing. This too can boost responses in visual cortex, as for fear-associated stimuli. Both attentional and emotional modulation of visual processing may reflect distant influences upon visual cortex, exerted by brain structures outside the visual system per se. Hence, these modulations may provide windows onto causal interactions between distant but interconnected brain regions. We review recent evidence, noting both similarities and differences between attentional and emotional modulation. Both can affect visual cortex, but can reflect influences from different regions, such as fronto-parietal circuits versus the amygdala. Recent work on this has developed new approaches for studying causal influences between human brain regions that may be useful in other cognitive domains. The new methods include application of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) measures in brain-damaged patients to study distant functional impacts of their focal lesions, and use of transcranial magnetic stimulation concurrently with fMRI or EEG in the normal brain. Cognitive neuroscience is now moving beyond considering the putative functions of particular brain regions, as if each operated in isolation, to consider, instead, how distinct brain regions (such as visual cortex, parietal or frontal regions, or amygdala) may mutually influence each other in a causal manner.  相似文献

自然生态空间是生物栖息繁衍的场所,生物和非生物成分组成的生态系统为人类提供赖以生存的生态系统服务。新时期绿色发展战略下高质量国土空间资源配置需要科学探究生态空间约束的作用机理。以泉州市为研究区,选取水源涵养、土壤保持和生物多样性等生态系统服务为生态因子,基于有序加权平均(OWA)算法构建城市扩张的生态软约束机制。以2005年土地利用现状为起始值,综合考虑自然人文等驱动力因素,基于构建的OWA-FLUS模型对泉州市2020年和2035年土地利用时空演化动态开展多情景模拟预测。结果表明:(1)策略控制因子δ=0.000001下,OWA-FLUS模型的总体精度和Kappa系数达到95.94%和0.7742,FoM和FoMurban比FLUS模型分别提高了4.95%和7.17%,基于提升潜力空间的MICE功效指数分别为0.059和0.102。(2)当δ值从0向1000变化时,OWA-FLUS模型的模拟精度逐渐下降。对比δ=1.0的赋权线性组合(WLC)生态约束,δ=0.000001下的OWA模拟的FoMurban提升了5.70%。(3)2035年基准...  相似文献

Background

Dengue infection spread in naive populations occurs in an explosive and widespread fashion primarily due to the absence of population herd immunity, the population dynamics and dispersal of Ae. aegypti, and the movement of individuals within the urban space. Knowledge on the relative contribution of such factors to the spatial dimension of dengue virus spread has been limited. In the present study we analyzed the spatio-temporal pattern of a large dengue virus-2 (DENV-2) outbreak that affected the Australian city of Cairns (north Queensland) in 2003, quantified the relationship between dengue transmission and distance to the epidemic''s index case (IC), evaluated the effects of indoor residual spraying (IRS) on the odds of dengue infection, and generated recommendations for city-wide dengue surveillance and control.

Methods and Findings

We retrospectively analyzed data from 383 DENV-2 confirmed cases and 1,163 IRS applications performed during the 25-week epidemic period. Spatial (local k-function, angular wavelets) and space-time (Knox test) analyses quantified the intensity and directionality of clustering of dengue cases, whereas a semi-parametric Bayesian space-time regression assessed the impact of IRS and spatial autocorrelation in the odds of weekly dengue infection. About 63% of the cases clustered up to 800 m around the IC''s house. Most cases were distributed in the NW-SE axis as a consequence of the spatial arrangement of blocks within the city and, possibly, the prevailing winds. Space-time analysis showed that DENV-2 infection spread rapidly, generating 18 clusters (comprising 65% of all cases), and that these clusters varied in extent as a function of their distance to the IC''s residence. IRS applications had a significant protective effect in the further occurrence of dengue cases, but only when they reached coverage of 60% or more of the neighboring premises of a house.

Conclusion

By applying sound statistical analysis to a very detailed dataset from one of the largest outbreaks that affected the city of Cairns in recent times, we not only described the spread of dengue virus with high detail but also quantified the spatio-temporal dimension of dengue virus transmission within this complex urban environment. In areas susceptible to non-periodic dengue epidemics, effective disease prevention and control would depend on the prompt response to introduced cases. We foresee that some of the results and recommendations derived from our study may also be applicable to other areas currently affected or potentially subject to dengue epidemics.  相似文献

Thresholds were measured for the detection of spatial discontinuities (notches and bumps) along luminance boundaries. At high contrasts of the boundary, thresholds expressed in terms of the spatial notch/bump height fell well inside the hyperacuity range. Expressed as luminance increment thresholds between adjacent photoreceptors, the same thresholds were similar to those previously reported by Hartridge and by Hecht and Mintz for the detection of a single line. The ability of observers to detect differences in the height of a boundary on either side of a mean luminance gap was also investigated, and the effect of the gap was found to depend upon stimulus contrast. At high contrasts the introduction of a gap increased thresholds, but at the lowest contrasts, thresholds were unaffected by a gap. The role of different spatial frequency and orientational mechanisms in vernier acuity is discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between colonic pressure waves and movement of content. In 11 healthy subjects, pressures were recorded at 10-cm intervals from cecum to rectum for 32 h. In six subjects, transit was simultaneously measured for 8 h after direct cecal instillation of 1.5 mCi of (99m)Tc sulfur colloid. Thirty-two percent of isotope movements were related to nonpropagating activity and twenty-eight percent to propagating sequences. The extent of isotope movement related to propagating sequences (25.1 +/- 2.1 cm) was greater than that due to nonpropagating activity (12.8 +/- 0.7 cm; P = 0.0001). Propagating sequences originated significantly more frequently (P = 0.004) and propagated further (P = 0.0006) in the proximal compared with the distal colon. Only 36% of propagating sequences were propulsive of content, and compared with nonpropulsive sequences, these propagated further (41 +/- 6 vs. 27 +/- 2 cm; P < 0.05) and had a higher probability of originating proximally (P = 0.0003), a higher pressure wave amplitude (50 +/- 5 vs. 34 +/- 4 mmHg; P = 0.0001), and slower velocity (2.2 +/- 0.3 vs. 3.6 +/- 0.47 cm/s; P = 0.02). We conclude that most movements of colonic content are related to pressure waves. There is marked regional variation in the prevalence, velocity, and extent of propagation of propagating pressure wave sequences, which are an important mechanism for transporting content over long distances. The effectiveness of transport by a propagating sequence is influenced by its site of origin, amplitude, and velocity.  相似文献

Background

Dengue is a growing problem both in its geographical spread and in its intensity, and yet current global distribution remains highly uncertain. Challenges in diagnosis and diagnostic methods as well as highly variable national health systems mean no single data source can reliably estimate the distribution of this disease. As such, there is a lack of agreement on national dengue status among international health organisations. Here we bring together all available information on dengue occurrence using a novel approach to produce an evidence consensus map of the disease range that highlights nations with an uncertain dengue status.

Methods/Principal Findings

A baseline methodology was used to assess a range of evidence for each country. In regions where dengue status was uncertain, additional evidence types were included to either clarify dengue status or confirm that it is unknown at this time. An algorithm was developed that assesses evidence quality and consistency, giving each country an evidence consensus score. Using this approach, we were able to generate a contemporary global map of national-level dengue status that assigns a relative measure of certainty and identifies gaps in the available evidence.

Conclusion

The map produced here provides a list of 128 countries for which there is good evidence of dengue occurrence, including 36 countries that have previously been classified as dengue-free by the World Health Organization and/or the US Centers for Disease Control. It also identifies disease surveillance needs, which we list in full. The disease extents and limits determined here using evidence consensus, marks the beginning of a five-year study to advance the mapping of dengue virus transmission and disease risk. Completion of this first step has allowed us to produce a preliminary estimate of population at risk with an upper bound of 3.97 billion people. This figure will be refined in future work.  相似文献

Viral replicases of many positive-strand RNA viruses are membrane-bound complexes of cellular and viral proteins that include viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP). The in vitro RdRP assay system that utilizes cytoplasmic extracts from dengue viral-infected cells and exogenous RNA templates was developed to understand the mechanism of viral replication in vivo. Our results indicated that in vitro RNA synthesis at the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) required the presence of the 5'-terminal region (TR) and the two cyclization (CYC) motifs suggesting a functional interaction between the TRs. In this study, using a psoralen-UV cross-linking method and an in vitro RdRP assay, we analyzed structural determinants for physical and functional interactions. Exogenous RNA templates that were used in the assays contained deletion mutations in the 5'-TR and substitution mutations in the 3'-stem-loop structure including those that would disrupt the predicted pseudoknot structure. Our results indicate that there is physical interaction between the 5'-TR and 3'-UTR that requires only the CYC motifs. RNA synthesis at the 3'-UTR, however, requires long range interactions involving the 5'-UTR, CYC motifs, and the 3'-stem-loop region that includes the tertiary pseudoknot structure.  相似文献

The invasion of a secondary forest within the city of Rio de Janeiro by Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus was evaluated from July 1997 to June 1998 through collections of immature stages in ovitraps set at 1 m, 10 m, 100 m, 500 m, and 1,000 m into the forest from houses on the periphery. Both mosquito species were much more abundant close to houses (1-10 m). Aedes aegypti was not collected beyond 100 m, while Ae. albopictus was the most abundant species overall and in ovitraps at all distances from houses. Abundances of Ae. albopictus were significantly correlated with time-lagged rainfall and with abundances of Ae. aegypti. Co-occurrences of Ae. albopictus in traps with Ae. aegypti and Limatus durhami, but not with Culex dolosus, were more likely close to houses. The results suggest that the urban forest is a refuge for both Aedes species, but especially for Ae. albopictus, whose abundance both near houses and in the forest raises concern that this invader may transmit arboviruses to humans that are presently restricted to the sylvan environment.  相似文献

Fluorescein isothiocyanate derivatization of the human lactotransferrin on Lys-264 inhibits the binding of the protein of human PHA-activated lymphocytes [Legrand, D., Mazurier, J., Maes, P., Rochard, E., Montreuil, J., & Spik, G. (1991) Biochem. J. 276, 733-738], indicating that part of the receptor-binding site is located in the N-terminal domain I of lactotransferrin. In the present study, a 6-kDa peptide (residues 4-52) was isolated from the N-terminal lobe of human lactotransferrin which inhibited the binding of the protein to its cell receptor. In addition, lactotransferrin was derivatized using sulfosuccinimidyl 2-(p-azidosalicylamido)ethyl-1,3'-dithiopropionate (SASD) and sulfosuccinimidyl 6-((4'-azido-2'-nitrophenyl)amino)hexanoate (sulfo-SANPAH), two heterobifunctional reagents generally used for receptor-ligand cross-linking. The azide group of these two reagents was inactivated by photolysis, and only the succinimidyl ester group was allowed to react with lysine residues of the protein. The binding of the derivatized lactotransferrins to the human lymphocyte receptor was assayed. SASD, which binds to Lys-74, was able to inhibit the binding of lactotransferrin to the cell receptor, in contrast to Lys-281-binding sulfo-SANPAH. Molecular modeling showed the position of SASD, sulfo-SANPAH, and fluorescein molecules at the surface of the protein and suggested that SASD and fluorescein could mask residues 4-6 and two loop-containing regions of human lactotransferrin (residues 28-34 and 38-45). The comparison of the primary and tertiary structures of human lactotransferrin and serotransferrin, which bind to specific cell receptors, shows that the above-mentioned regions, which are likely involved in protein-receptor interactions, possess specific structural features.  相似文献

Most studies of the effects of urbanization on avian diversity are carried out in a single urban area. However, urban areas vary in characteristics, such as human population size and biophysical context, that likely influence within-urban area ecological structure and functioning. In this paper, we describe the first direct test of the effect of urban area human population size on bird diversity. We applied simultaneous autoregressive modeling and multi-model inference to North American Breeding Bird Survey and US Census data from 48 urban areas in the conterminous United States to determine the effect of urban area human population size on total breeding bird species richness and abundance in surrounding urban regions, controlling for variation in elevation, air temperature, precipitation, urban area age, human population density, and original habitat type. We hypothesized that increasing urban area human population size is a driver of increasing regional habitat loss and fragmentation and disturbance and therefore would have a negative effect on breeding bird species richness and abundance in regions. We found strong evidence for a negative effect of urban area human population size on species richness and show that urban area human population size is positively correlated with impervious surface cover and air pollutant emissions in urban regions, lending provisional support to our hypothesis. Our results imply that we prioritize urban regions surrounding urban areas with large human population sizes for conservation activities that will benefit birds, such as preserving green spaces. In future, greater emphasis should be placed on the acquisition of high-quality ecological data in multiple urban areas in order to increase our understanding of the structure and functioning of complex urban systems, a frontier in urban ecology.  相似文献

To expand our understanding of the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying human fatherhood, including its cross-cultural expression, we investigated the hormonal correlates of fatherhood in the greater Kingston, Jamaica area. We recruited 43 men, aged 18-38, to participate: 15 single men; 16 "coresidential" fathers (men who live with their adult female partner and youngest child); and 12 "visiting" fathers (men who live apart from their adult female partner and youngest child). The research protocol entailed biological sampling before and after a 20-min behavioral session during which single men sat alone and fathers interacted with their partner and youngest child. Hormone measures relied upon minimally invasive techniques (salivary testosterone and cortisol, finger prick blood spot prolactin, urinary oxytocin and vasopressin). Results revealed significant group differences in average male testosterone levels (p=0.006), with post hoc contrasts indicating that visiting fathers had significantly (p<0.05) lower testosterone levels than single men. Prolactin profiles also differed significantly across groups (p=0.010) whereby post hoc contrasts showed that prolactin levels of single men declined significantly compared with the flat levels of visiting fathers (p<0.05). No group differences in cortisol, oxytocin or vasopressin levels were observed. However, among fathers, vasopressin levels were significantly and negatively (r=-.431, p=0.022) correlated with the age of a man's youngest child. These results thus implicate lower testosterone levels as well as prolactin and vasopressin in human fatherhood. These findings also highlight the importance of sociocultural context in human fatherhood while exhibiting parallels with existing data on the non-human vertebrate hormonal bases of paternal care.  相似文献

It is known that in mice the centromeric heterochromatin remains compact during the whole cell cycle and at interphase is referred to as "chromocentres". In the current study, by the use of antibodies against prekinetochores and DNA polymerase (a PCNA antigen), we showed that in murine L929 cells chromocentres remain spatially associated with prekinetochores during the entire interphase, including the late S-period, when DNA chromocentres replicate. Augmentation of prekinetochore fluorescence increases concomitantly with the heterochromation replication, but the prekinetochore duplication occurs only in G2 period. A conclusion has been made that murine interphase cells can be used for biochemical fractionation of chromocentres associated with prekinetochore proteins.  相似文献

During static conditions the nociceptive reflex is known to vary as a function of, for example, the stimulus position, stimulus intensity, and muscle contraction. The aim of the present human study was to investigate whether the reflex and the corresponding perception of pain are modulated by cyclic movements of the limb involved. Reflexes, evoked by nociceptive electric stimulation of the sural nerve, were recorded from the biceps femoris and the rectus femoris muscles in eight volunteers. Four different experiments were performed to compare the nociceptive reflex and pain score elicited during active isometric/dynamic flexion/extension of the knee joint. The amplitudes of the reflexes were largest for the dynamic conditions. The reflexes, evoked during dynamic extension and isometric contraction of the rectus femoris muscle, had the shortest latencies but the recordings from the biceps femoris muscle were larger than from the rectus femoris muscle. Knee joint angle recordings showed that the largest angle variations occurred for the dynamic conditions and were only marginally disturbed for the isometric conditions. A given stimulus intensity evoked the highest pain intensity during isometric contractions. This indicates that there would seem to be no causal relationship between the size of the nociceptive reflex and the pain intensity.  相似文献

1. The effect of spatial scale on the interactions between three hymenopteran parasitoids and their weevil hosts was investigated. The parasitoid Mesopolobus incultus (Walker) parasitised Gymnetron pascuorum Gyll.; the parasitoids Entodon sparetus (Walker) and Bracon sp. parasitised Mecinus pyraster Herbst. Both of these weevils develop inside the seedhead of Plantago lanceolata L. but occupy different niches. Seedheads were sampled annually from 162 plants at each of two experimental sites consisting of a series of habitat patches of two distinct sizes. Data were analysed from three site‐years. 2. Parasitoid densities at each site‐year were closely related to the abundance of their respective weevil hosts. The overall proportion of hosts parasitised was more variable for M. incultus than for E. sparetus and Bracon sp. 3. Changes in spatial scale affected the variability of parasitoid densities. For M. incultus, there was generally a greater degree of additional heterogeneity for all increases of scale; for E. sparetus, this was true only at the largest scales; for Bracon sp., all components of variance were negative. 4. The rate of parasitism was related to host density in different ways at different spatial scales. Mesopolobus incultus exhibited inverse density dependence at the finest (seedhead) scale, direct density dependence at the intermediate (plant) scale, and density independence at the large (habitat area 729 m2) scale. Entodon sparetus showed no response to variation in host density at any spatial scale. Bracon sp. showed direct density dependence only at the intermediate and largest scales. 5. Parasitoids E. sparetus and Bracon sp. seemed able to detect more than one M. pyraster individual in seedheads with multiple host occupancy; a greater incidence of conspecific parasitoids than expected emerged from such seedheads.  相似文献

The genomic RNAs of flaviviruses such as dengue virus (DEN) have a 5' m7GpppN cap like those of cellular mRNAs but lack a 3' poly(A) tail. We have studied the contributions to translational expression of 5'- and 3'-terminal regions of the DEN serotype 2 genome by using luciferase reporter mRNAs transfected into Vero cells. DCLD RNA contained the entire DEN 5' and 3' untranslated regions (UTRs), as well as the first 36 codons of the capsid coding region fused to the luciferase reporter gene. Capped DCLD RNA was as efficiently translated in Vero cells as capped GLGpA RNA, a reporter with UTRs from the highly expressed alpha-globin mRNA and a 72-residue poly(A) tail. Analogous reporter RNAs with regulatory sequences from West Nile and Sindbis viruses were also strongly expressed. Although capped DCLD RNA was expressed much more efficiently than its uncapped form, uncapped DCLD RNA was translated 6 to 12 times more efficiently than uncapped RNAs with UTRs from globin mRNA. The 5' cap and DEN 3' UTR were the main sources of the translational efficiency of DCLD RNA, and they acted synergistically in enhancing translation. The DEN 3' UTR increased mRNA stability, although this effect was considerably weaker than the enhancement of translational efficiency. The DEN 3' UTR thus has translational regulatory properties similar to those of a poly(A) tail. Its translation-enhancing effect was observed for RNAs with globin or DEN 5' sequences, indicating no codependency between viral 5' and 3' sequences. Deletion studies showed that translational enhancement provided by the DEN 3' UTR is attributable to the cumulative contributions of several conserved elements, as well as a nonconserved domain adjacent to the stop codon. One of the conserved elements was the conserved sequence (CS) CS1 that is complementary to cCS1 present in the 5' end of the DEN polyprotein open reading frame. Complementarity between CS1 and cCS1 was not required for efficient translation.  相似文献
