The current study intends to evaluate the many hazards affecting the spread of the significant fodder grass Lygeum spartum Loefl. ex. L. and its associated species in Egypt's Western Mediterranean Desert over the past 60 years (from 1958 to 2020); depending on the data of the previous literature and the current situation evaluation by recent field trips. It also aims to assess its ecosystem services. Sixty-nine stands were collected from previous studies and unpublished data, in addition to 30 stands (10 m2) were added including 5 field trips during the period from spring 2019 to spring 2020. Measurements were taken to create a classification of this vegetation and to determine the main threats that affect its distribution composition. There are 142 species associated with the distribution of the studied plant in 6 habitats. While only 107 species were recorded in the recent stands in 7 habitats. Vegetation groups (G1- G8) obtained from TWINSPAN classification indicating that G1 (wadis) is the most diverse group with a species richness 34.7 species per stand, while G6 (dune) has the highest species turnover (4.57) during the period of 1958 to 2014. But in recent stands; G5 (saline and non-saline depression) is the most diverse group (30.875), while G2 (dunes) has the highest species turnover (4.819). Medicinal plants are the most represented (79.86%), followed by grazing plants (72.9%). The most common service is sand stabilization (92% of total services), followed by windbreak (natural) (40%). Threatened species represent 92.4%; habitat loss is the most affected threat (95 species), followed by over-collecting and over-cutting (82 species). Twenty out of 99 stands (20.2% of the total stands) have been destroyed due to human activity. Continuous monitoring of remaining patches of Egypt’s northwestern Mediterranean coast was required to save its natural flora from extinction.  相似文献

BackgroundMammary tumors are one of the major malignancies seen in cats. Researchers have indicated the similarity between the epidemiological and clinicopathological patterns of feline mammary tumors and human breast cancer (HBC). In recent years, the investigation of trace elements in cancer tissues becomes prevalent in HBC due to the role of these elements in biochemical and physiological processes. This study, it is aimed to evaluate some trace elements in feline mammary tumors according to clinical and pathological findings.MethodsA total of 60 tumoral masses from 16 female cats with mammary tumors were included in the study. The study groups were formed according to histopathology as malignant epithelial tumor (MET; n = 39) and hyperplasia and dysplasia (H&D; n = 21). Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Magnesium (Mg), Manganese (Mn), Selenium (Se) and Zinc (Zn) trace elements in mammary tissues were analyzed by using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer.ResultsThe mean age and weight of the cats were 11.75 ± 0.75 years and 3.35 ± 0.21 kg; respectively. Eleven of 16 cats were intact whereas the rest of them had been spayed. Metastases were observed in 10 cats. Tissue Mg level in group MET was significantly higher than in group H&D (P < 0.01) while the other elements had not significant differences between the groups. In group MET, analyzed elements were not statistically significant related to the inflammation, ulceration and invasion to the peripheral muscle (P > 0.05). However, tissue Fe level was significantly higher in T2 than in T3 (P < 0.05). The mean levels of tissue Fe, Mg and Mn had significant differences related to histological grading as P < 0.01, P < 0.05 and P < 0.001; respectively. A mild to severe correlation was found between tissue Zn and Se, Cu, Fe, Mg, and Mn levels.ConclusionTissue Mg and some trace elements were evaluated in feline mammary tumours in regard to various clinicopathological parameters. Tissue Mg level was sufficient to differentiate the malignant epithelial tumors from hyperplasia and dysplasia. However, Mn and Se tended to distinguish different tumor types. Tissue Fe, Mg and Mn had significant differences related to histological grading. Also, the Fe level was significantly higher in T2 than in T3 and Zn level tended to be higher in T3 than in T1. It was concluded that Mg, Se, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn provided useful information on the pathogenesis of feline mammary tumors. Further research is needed on the tissue and serum concentrations of trace elements which may provide valuable information for the disease prognosis.  相似文献

An in vitro gut model was used to investigate the bioavailability of calcium, magnesium, cadmium, chromium, iron, manganese, and lead in the Mexican (maize) tortilla. The samples (4 g) were digested in quartz tubes using concentrated nitric acid (12 mL) at 65‡C (2 h) and then at 120‡C (4 h). Total element concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Enzymatic hydrolysis was carried out in two steps: first, with pepsin in a hydrochloric acid medium (pH 1.8) and then after neutralization with sodium bicarbonate (pH 6.0), with the mixture of pancreatine, amylase, and bile salts extract. Elements under study were determined in the supernatant by atomic absorption spectrometry. The bioavailable fraction of each element in tortilla was evaluated as the percentage of total element content found in the solution after enzymolysis. The obtained results showed relatively low bioavailability of the selected elements (from 2% to 32%), which possibly may be ascribed to the presence of dietary fiber in tortilla.  相似文献

In September 2014, a pod of seven sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) was stranded along the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy. Concentrations of 20 essential and non-essential trace elements were quantified in the brain, muscle, liver and kidneys of three female sperm whales, which died in this event.The essential elements copper, iron, manganese and zinc showed low ranges of variability, suggesting a homeostatic physiological control, while selenium concentrations were associated with age. Molybdenum, nickel and chromium showed low ranges of concentrations and no evidence of preferential accumulation in selected organs. Very low concentrations of the non-essential elements cadmium, lead, tin and vanadium were detected in all tissues, suggesting a minor impact of these pollutants on the sperm whale populations of the Mediterranean Sea. Aluminum was revealed to have relatively high concentrations, together with a high variability between tissues and individuals, reaching the highest values in the kidneys and muscle of the oldest female, which was pregnant; the rare earth elements – lanthanum and cerium – were also detected in the kidneys of this female, indicating that pregnancy probably influenced metal concentrations in body tissues.  相似文献

绿原酸是金银花(Lonicera japonica Thunb.)入药的主要化学成分,如何稳定和提高绿原酸的含量是近年来金银花研究的热点。本研究通过对金银花分别根施Fe、B和Mo3种微量元素,比较处理前、后金银花中微量元素与绿原酸含量的变化,并定量分析3种微量元素对金银花绿原酸合成关键酶基因LjHCT和LjC3H1表达的影响。研究结果显示,高浓度的Fe处理对LjHCT基因的表达有明显的抑制作用,而中、低浓度的Fe处理可以促进LjHCT基因的表达;随着B和Mo元素浓度的提高,LjHCT基因的表达量也逐渐增加。低浓度的Fe处理可以促进LjC3H1基因的表达,而高浓度的Fe处理对LjC3H1基因的表达具有抑制作用;B元素对LjC3H1基因表达无显著影响,而高浓度的Mo处理可以促进LjC3H1基因的表达。根施中、低浓度的Fe元素,中、高浓度的Mo和B元素后金银花绿原酸含量显著增加;而根施高浓度的Fe元素后金银花中绿原酸含量显著减少。研究结果表明微量元素Fe、B和Mo可通过调节绿原酸生物合成关键酶基因的表达从而有效促进绿原酸的形成和积累。本研究为人工定向调控金银花绿原酸含量、开发人工栽培金银花专用微量元素肥料提供了理论依据。  相似文献

The endogenous concentrations of the essential elements Ca, Cl, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, N, P and Zn, and of the nonessential elements Al, As, Ba, Br, Co, Cr, Cs, Hg, I, La, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Si and Sr were determined in 5 successive needle age classes. 40 mature spruce trees from 6 different sites were investigated individually. A given element usually shows smooth changes with the needle age class t. Trees on a given site usually have a similar dynamic behaviour. The same holds for the different site means. The concentrations can be approximated by functions c=f(t). Three different types of functions are required to describe the dynamic behaviour of 3 groups of elements that increase with t, and one for the elements that decrease with t. A given element usually can be described by the same type of function at all sites, even if its concentration differs widely. Exceptions are Mn, Co and Zn, which change from a decreasing function at low concentrations to an increasing function at high concentrations. Further irregulatities are found at some sites with Ca, Sr and Ba. These findings are corroborated by a multivariate statistical analysis.  相似文献

Eight samples (total N = 298) of female meadow brown butterflies Maniola jurtina were scored independently by P. M. Brakefield and W. H. Dowdeswell for hindwing spot-number and spot-combination. Spot-size was measured by P.M.B. W.H.D scored 37% few spots overall than P.M.B. ( N = 554). This resulted in some marked differences in spot-frequency distributions. There was a rather narrow threshold of spot-size above which nearly all spots were scored by both of us and below which most spots were only scored by P.M.B. When the data of P.M.B. are transformed by excluding all spots below a threshold a close correspondence of spot-frequencies is found. Relative differences between samples tend to be maintained in the untransformed data. The consequences of the differences in scoring techniques are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Normally quiescent cortical tissue of pea roots can be induced, by severing the adjacent vascular cylinder of the root, to undergo redifferentiation to form new files of tracheary and sieve elements which bridge the wound. The development of vascular transfer cells is also induced. Redifferentiation is normally accompanied by division of the original cortical cells. The planes of cell division, especially those preceding sieve element formation, are aligned very precisely in adjacent cells, to produce smooth files of cells. In roots wounded 3–4 mm from the apex, bands of microtubules in the periphery of the cells (pre-prophase bands) form at sites which correspond to the expected planes of cell division.  相似文献

Summary Interference with the normal progression of the cell cycle by the drugs caffeine and colchicine does not prevent parenchyma cells in the cortex of pea roots from being reprogrammed to become tracheary and sieve elements following severance of the vascular cylinder of the root. The pattern of secondary wall deposition of the newly differentiated tracheary elements is highly aberrant in the presence of colchicine but is of normal appearance in the caffeinetreated roots. In each case, the new sieve elements have sieve plates and lateral sieve areas with callose deposits. Induction and redifferentiation are achieved in the absence of cell division and microtubules in colchicine-treated roots.Bi- and multi-nucleate cells are produced by both drugs. Microtubules are still present in the caffeine-treated roots but cell plate formation is inhibited. The partitioning of the multinucleate cortical cells by the interdigitation of free-growing walls between the nuclei occurs in the presence of caffeine but not colchicine.  相似文献

Summary An efficient procedure is outlined forin vitro regeneration of an epiphytic orchid,Cymbidium aloifolium (L.) Sw. using rhizomes developed from seeds. Murashige and Skoog's (1962) medium (MS) containing indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), or 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) stimulated growth and proliferation of rhizomes with NAA being most effective at 5.0 mg.l−1 (27.0 μM). Shoot bud differentiation was induced in the apical portions of the rhizomes on MS medium containing kinetin (Kn) or N6-benzyladenine (BA). The highest frequency of shoot regeneration (91.5%) and the maximum number of shoot buds formed (3.5 shoots/rhizome) were recorded with BA at 1.0 mg.l−1 (4.4 μM). NAA (0.1 mg.l−1, 0.54 μM), whenever added to the medium in conjunction with BA (1.0 mg.l−1, 4.4 μM), slightly enhanced the frequency of shoot bud regeneration (92.6%) and the number of shoot buds formed (5.2 shoots/rhizome). Moreover, an NAA-BA combination induced rooting in regenerated shoots thereby producing complete plantlets in one step. Shoots developed on cytokinin-supplemented medium were rooted on MS containing NAA at 1.0 mg.l−1 (5.4 μM). Regenerated plantlets were acclimated and eventually established in a garden.  相似文献

In the present study, effects of salinity stress were evaluated in the leaves and roots of two pistachio cultivars (Badami-Rize-Zarand (BZ) and Badami-e-Sefid (BS)). In overall, salinity negatively affects growth of both cultivars with more pronounced effects on BS. The physiological reason of the reduction could be attributed to some extent to more depletion of photosynthetic pigment in BS. In both cultivars, salinity increased proline content. Moderate and high salinities increased the soluble sugar contents in BZ. In both cultivars, Na+ content increased in plant organs with increasing Na+ in the media. Salinity treatment decreased the Fe and Pi contents in BS cultivar, while they remained unchanged in BZ. These results show that BZ cultivar exhibits more tolerance to salinity stress than BS cultivar possibly by better growth performance, accumulating more osmolytes, lesser accumulation of toxic sodium ion and lower Na+/K+ in the shoots as well as maintaining nutrient contents.  相似文献

Norway spruce and red oak trees were planted directly into the soil and enclosed in open-top chambers. For 2 years the trees were exposed to both ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations (700 mol mol-1) and during this time variations in nutrient concentrations were studied. CO2-treated plants had decreases in global leaf concentrations of nitrogen, potassium, calcium and manganese for both species. When different areas of the foliage were analysed however, the response showed much variability between the respective sites and between species. Furthermore the nutrient concentrations changed differently as the plant material aged and this change showed inter-treatment differences. These results show how it may be important to analyse plant material of different ages and at different cell sites when studying nutrient levels.  相似文献

Soil solution, xylem sap and needles of mature trees were sampled in three spruce stands over one vegetation period and analysed for major cations. Investigations of nutrient distribution between these three pools and evaluations of seasonal dynamics give the following results: The highest nutrient concentrations in the xylem sap occur at the time of bud break and become gradually lower during the vegetation period. The trees show similar trends of xylem sap concentrations with time for potassium, calcium and magnesium regardless of the nutritional status of the plots. No coupling of xylem sap to soil solution composition can be observed in spite of a high variability of soil solution chemistry in time. The major cations in the current needles exhibit a significantly different trend with time. No time-based correlations for nutrient contents could be found for the needles from the previous year.Despite mobilisation of storage pools in the deficient stand, trees are not able to increase the Ca and Mg contents in the needles up to the level of the other stands. Potassium could be retranslocated in sufficient extent for nutrition of current needles. Due to seasonal variability and dependence upon internal processes, such as retranslocation and mobilisation of nutrients, xylem sap does not seem to be a good tool for the estimation of the nutritional status of forest sites.It was concluded that only minor transport into new foliage via xylem sap will proceed after nutrient flush during the bud break and the nutrient content in the new biomass will be governed by dilution due to biomass growth or by nutrient transport by other means than xylem sap.  相似文献

Seasonal changes of antioxidant activity, total phenolic and anthocyanin constituent of Morus nigra L. and Morus alba L. stems were investigated. Stems tissues of these species exhibited different antioxidant activity. Antioxidant action as well as anthocyanin constituents of these species reached the highest value in October whereas the lowest in February. Summary A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of manganese on accumulation of Zn, Fe, Cu, and B by different soybean genotypes under varying soil pH conditions, in view of determining tolerance towards extremes in soil pH and mineral toxicities. Enon sandy loam soil was used for the investigation in a greenhouse. Manganese rates were 0, 10, and 20 kg/ha. The pH levels were 5.3, 6.3, and 7.0. The soybean genotypes tested were PI 159319, PI 324924, PI 960895, and L-76-0132. Results indicate that Zn concentration in the genotypes leaf and seed was not affected by Mn application whereas the Cu concentration in the leaf was affected. In general, there was an increase in concentration of Fe in the genotypes seed with Mn application. Boron concentration in the genotypes leaf and seed was unaffected by Mn application. The effect of soil pH on Zn, Fe, Cu, and B in the genotypes tissue was significant. Seasonal changes in endogenous IAA and ABA were measured by gas chromatography/mass-spectrometry. Highest concentrations of ABA occurred in leaves. There was a major ABA peak in early spring (up to 1360 ng g–1 dw). Levels were low in summer (90 ng g–1 dw). There was a minor ABA peak in autumn. Endogenous IAA in leaves was highest in winter/spring (up to 76 ng g–1 dw). Applied ABA promoted abscission of leaves and shoots while applied NAA delayed abscission. The main peak in leaf-ABA content was followed by extensive shoot abscission. The involvement of ABA and IAA in regulation of flush growth was not clear.This paper is dedicated to Michael G. Large planktonic Cladocera are typically the most important components of the diet of underyearling roach. Selection for large species and individuals by fish can result in a shift in the species composition of the cladoceran community as well as a reduction in the mean size of the individuals of large species and in the assemblage as a whole. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that underyearlings feeding on Daphnia hyalina smaller than 1 mm in length has a significantly lower intake of prey volume per unit time than when feeding on prey greater than 1.5 mm. A decrease in the nutritional quality of zooplankton prey, brought about by increasing predation pressure is suggested as the mechanism for density-dependent reductions in the growth of underyearling roach in eutrophic water bodies.  相似文献

Ecological life history and reproductive traits of two threatened aquatic macrophytes, Blyxa aubertii L.C. Richard and B. echinosperma (Clarke) Hooker, were studied in irrigation ponds in south-western Japan. The size of plants varied greatly in both species but reproductive allocation was nearly constant irrespective of plant size at reproductive stage, amounting to 31.8% and 45.9% at maximum in B. aubertii and B. echinosperma, respectively. The number of flowers and total number of seeds produced per individual were associated significantly with plant size. Seeds were produced by self-pollination both in emerged and submerged cleistogamous flowers and seed set rate of the two species was very high. These traits are considered to be adaptive to unstable environments that are liable to water level fluctuations, such as rice-fields and irrigation ponds.  相似文献
