Two experiments were carried out using two different approaches to compare populations ofCrepis tectorum (Asteraceae). One was based on a comparison of means of various vegetative and reproductive characters and another was based on a comparison of response patterns of the same characters in a series of environments. Population divergence within two earlier recognized form series, one from weed habitats and one from alvar habitats on Baltic islands, resulted in a partially overlapping pattern in cluster analyses based on character means. However, the pattern revealed by a comparison of the direction and amount of plastic response suggested that populations within the two form series had more similar response patterns than other combinations of populations. It was concluded that patterns of plasticity may provide useful additional information on the overall similarity among taxa. An hypothesis that plants in weed populations should exhibit a greater phenotypic response to the environments than plants in alvar populations was rejected.  相似文献

The potential of the leaf beetle Charidotis auroguttata as a biocontrol agent for cat’s claw creeper Macfadyena unguis-cati (Bignoniaceae), an environmental weed in Australia, and risk to non-target plants was evaluated under quarantine conditions. In no-choice tests, C. auroguttata adults and larvae fed on many plant species across different families, but egg to adult development occurred only on the target weed. However, when neonate larvae from the target weed were transferred onto Myoporum boninense australe (Myoporaceae), a non-target native plant, 11.7% completed development, as compared to 95% of larvae that completed development on the target weed. Larval development on this non-target species also took twice as long as on the target weed. No larvae completed development on other test plants. In choice tests, leaf area consumption by adults and larvae was significantly more on the target weed than on other plants, and oviposition occurred only on the target weed. In the no-choice demography trials, adults laid eggs from the second week after emergence on the target weed, with an average of 0.286 eggs/female/day, resulting in an 18-fold increase in the adult population over 16 weeks. On My. boninense australe adult survival remained high, but oviposition commenced only from the 10th week after emergence with an average of 0.023 eggs/female/day, and none of the eggs developed into adults. In the choice demography trials, oviposition on the target weed was evident from the fourth week onwards, while on the non-target plant oviposition commenced only from the 14th week. Only 10% of total adults and 11.3% of total eggs were found on the non-target plant, and none of these eggs developed into adults. Although the biocontrol agent can ‘spill-over’ from the target weed to the non-target native plant and cause adult feeding damage, the non-target plant could not sustain a viable insect population on its own. This agent was not approved for field release in Australia due to perceived risk to non-target species.  相似文献

Trials were conducted to test the effects of artificial defoliation and defoliation by Macaria pallidata (Warren) (Geometridae) larvae on the invasive weed Mimosa pigra L. Herbivory is generally thought to be detrimental to plant fitness but it is well documented that many plants can increase growth rates or reproduction to compensate for damage. The compensatory ability of an invasive plant has implications for the potential success of defoliating biocontrol agents. Mimosa compensated for 25% manual defoliation, but at 50% and 100% defoliation levels plants suffered a significant reduction in growth rate, height, stem diameter, and biomass. Defoliation by one cohort of macaria larvae, at densities of eight larvae per plant, significantly reduced growth rates and plant height after 1 week. There were no differences between the effects of macaria larvae and manually simulated defoliation. These results suggest that defoliating biocontrol agents can have a valuable role in mimosa control programs.  相似文献

An invasive weed can occupy a variety of environments and ecological niches and generally no single control method can be used across all areas the weed is found. Biological control agents integrated with other methods can increase and/or improve site-specific weed control, but such combinatorial approaches have not been widely utilized. The successful leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) control program provides examples for future integrated weed programs that utilize biological control agents with traditional methods. Weed control methods can be used separately, such as when the leafy spurge gall midge (Spurgia esulae Gagné) reduced seed production in wooded areas while herbicides prevented further spread outside the tree line. Traditional methods also can be used directly with biological control agents. Incorporation of Aphthona spp. with herbicides has resulted in more rapid and complete leafy spurge control than either method used alone. Also, the insect population often increased rapidly following herbicide treatment, especially in areas where Aphthona spp. were established for several years but had been ineffective. Incorporation of Aphthona spp. with sheep or goat grazing has resulted in a larger decline in leafy spurge production than insects alone and in weed density than grazing alone. Controlled burns can aid establishment of biological control agents in marginally suitable environments, but timing of the fire must be coordinated to the insect’s life-cycle to ensure survival. Integration of biological control agents with revegetation programs required the agent to be the last method introduced because the cultivation and herbicide treatments necessary to establish desirable grasses and forbs were destructive to the insect. In a practical application, herbicides were combined with Aphthona spp. to help the insect establish and control leafy spurge in the habitat of the western prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera praeclara Sheviak and Bowles), an endangered species. Several experimental designs can be used to evaluate biological control agents with cultural, mechanical, and chemical control methods or with additional biological agents.  相似文献

The extent of self-fertility was examined in 16 populations ofCrepis tectorum. A hypothesis that a weedy habit favours autogamy was only partly supported. Low levels of self-fertility characterized non-weedy populations from calcareous grasslands (alvars) on the Baltic island in Öland. By contrast, plants in nearly all weed populations studied were more or less self-fertile. However, the trend towards autogamy may have occurred independently of the trend towards a weedy habit, as shown by moderately to high levels of self-fertility in alvar populations from two other Baltic islands. In the weed group, there was a tendency for plants from two field populations to be more autogamous than plants from more ruderal habitats. There was an association between self-fertility and small, inconspicious heads in the alvar group but the association was weaker when weed populations were also considered. The relatively wide heads characterizing the ruderal weed populations may, at least partly, be an indirect effect of increases in overall plant size and/or in the size of the fruit associated with each flower.  相似文献

Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus)is a fast growing annual with tremendous potential as a source of fiber for ropes, textiles and paper. Kenaf is an environmentally friendly crop; however, commercial production of kenaf is hindered by weed competition at the seedling stage. Herbicide resistant kenaf cultivars would reduce seedling weed competion and make growing kenaf more profitable. Factors that are important in establishing a transformation system for kenaf were examined. The influence of Agrobacterium strain, temperature, host tissue wounding, acetosyringone, virG/virE genes and host cell division on T-DNA expression in the kenaf shoot apex were investigated. Three Agrobacterium strains were tested, and A. tumefaciens LBA4404 significantly (α=0.05) yielded a high number of shoots surviving on selection medium; no shoots survived with EHA101S or Z707S. There was no significant difference (α=0.05) in transient T-DNA expression between 28 °C and 25 °C; however, shoots did not survive 16 °C or 19 °C co-cultivation temperatures. Shoot apex survival was increased significantly (α=0.05) when virulence genes and a cytokinin, TDZ, were combined. Sonicated shoots showed an increase in transient expression and shoot survival. Optimal conditions for shoot apex T-DNA transfer and expression were sonication for 5 s, co-cultivation with LBA4404 containingvirG/virEat room temperature, and 200 μmol/L acetosyringone.  相似文献

The expected outcome of weed control in natural systems is that the decline of a dominant weed will result in an increase in diversity of the plant community but this has seldom been tested. Here we evaluate the response of the plant community following the decline of diffuse knapweed (Centaurea diffusa) in six different pastures at White Lake, BC, Canada over five years. This period followed the establishment, spread and high levels of attack by the introduced European weevil, Larinus minutus, as part of a biological control program. Knapweed declined immediately before and during the study period, but, contrary to expectations, the species richness and diversity of the rangeland plant community did not increase. The absolute cover of native and introduced forbs and grasses increased following knapweed decline, but only the introduced grasses showed a consistent increase in cover relative to the other life-forms. However, unlike in other studies, the native plants dominated the study site. We conclude that the changes in plant communities following successful biological control are variable among programs and that the impact of replacement species must be evaluated in assessing the success of ecological restoration programs that use biological control to manage an undesirable weed.  相似文献

Prior studies of crop/weed gene flow in Cucurbita pepo have demonstrated that pollinators can deposit mixed pollen loads. The fate of microgametophytes emerging from these pollen mixtures is unknown. In an effort to define the relationship between pollen mixture composition and progeny composition, experimental plants representing a zucchini cultivar and a cross-compatible free-living type were genotyped with an isozyme marker and grown under greenhouse conditions. Weighed mixtures of weed/crop pollen were applied to stigmas of both types in differing ratios. Subsequent fertilizations were tracked by an electrophoretic screen of over 1,600 progeny from 39 fruits. Equal mixtures of weed/crop pollen do not produce a corresponding suite of progeny. Pollen of the pistillate parent is favored, and this advantage increases as the proportion of pollen from the pistillate parent increases. However, increasing the proportion of zucchini pollen does not produce a corresponding increase in fertilization success when the free-living type is used as pistillate parent. These results indicate that microgametophyte competition in both domesticated and free-living Cucurbita gynoecia could be a significant component of gene flow dynamics. The nature of this competition can only be defined by experiments that control numerous variables, both paternal and maternal, that might be involved. The tendency for crop/weed hybrids to occur at different portions of the ovary suggests that interactions involving two factors—microgametophyte growth rate and gynoecium structure—might play a significant role.  相似文献

Morphometric analyses of populations ofCrepis tectorum raised under uniform conditions support the earlier finding based on herbarium studies that extensive divergence has taken place in western Europe with a centre of diversity in the Baltic lowland area. A crossing experiment showed that subsp.pumila on the island of Öland has acquired a wide range of derived characters without the establishment of strong reproductive barriers, the only exception being a weak tendency for crosses with other populations on Öland to yield more fertile F1 offspring than crosses with weedy and non-weedy populations in adjacent regions. Canadian weed populations showed a more uniform response in crosses with subsp.pumila than did morphologically similar weed populations scattered throughout Central Europe. While F2 data suggest a monogenic basis of differences in the extent of leaf dissection, other distinctive traits appear to be governed by multiple genetic factors with individually slight effects.  相似文献

Seed proteins of individual plants from 14 populations ofStriga hermonthica growing on sorghum, millet, maize and wild grasses in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger were studied using gel electrophoresis in order to assess the population structure and genetic diversity of the parasitic weed. The relative intensity of the different bands within a pattern was used to depict the genotypic constitution of each sample. Genotypic frequencies conformed to Hardy-Weinberg expectations in 13 populations out of 14 for the two loci that were interpreted. Heterozygote deficiencies could be the result of the Wahlund effect. The genetic divergence between populations appears to be low for bothAdh andGot loci. Thus, the physiological specialization for a particular host could be a recent phenomenon. A low host specificity ofS. hermonthica populations could affect the efficiency of introducing new resistant cultivars as a control measure against the parasitic weed.  相似文献

Genetic diversity of alligator weed in China by RAPD analysis   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20  
Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was applied to analyze geneticdiversity of an invasive weedy species, alligator weed (Alternantheraphiloxeroides (Martius) Grisebach), collected from eight differentsites in southern China. Amplified by 108 RAPD primers, 391 bands wereidentified from samples collected from three of the eight sites withconsiderably large spatial intervals, but no genetic variation was detectedamong the samples. A total number of 196 RAPD fragments were amplified from allsamples collected in the eight sites by 31 primers that produced the mostconsistent results, but no genetic variation was detected within or betweenpopulations. The molecular data indicated extremely low genetic diversity in thealligator weed. Given the fact that the alligator weed is a serious invasiveweed, and widely found in China, we consider that the low genetic diversity ofthe alligator weed does not affect the success of its expansion in China, andlow genetic diversity does not necessarily lead to endangered status of a plantspecies. In addition, molecular evidence from this study suggests that thealligator weed in southern China might originate from a very few clones or evenonly from a single clone. Therefore, the rapid range expansion of the alligatorweed is most likely the result of a massive vegetative propagation since it wasintroduced in China.  相似文献

马缨丹原产于热带美洲,现已扩散至世界热带和亚热带地区,并严重威胁入侵地本地植物的生长。马缨丹因具有观赏价值而被我国大量引进,但由于疏于管理,发展成为入侵杂草,对我国农业、畜牧业及生态环境造成严重危害。目前对马缨丹的入侵机制还没有全面系统的认识。本文从马缨丹的生物学特性、入侵机制、生态学效应、防治与应用等方面进行综述,总结其研究进展,以期为马缨丹的防治工作提供依据。研究结果显示:马缨丹成功入侵的关键因素源于其独特的生物学性征;对农林业造成的危害的原因主要为它的化感作用;马缨丹的防治方法主要包括物理、化学和生物防治;马缨丹在防虫除虫、污染修复、药用价值等方面有所应用。此外,分析当前研究中的不足后发现,今后应加强马缨丹在自然环境中的适应机制、应用潜力、防治方法等的研究。  相似文献

外来入侵植物小子虉草(Phalaris minor Retz.)是世界公认的冬季农田恶性杂草,掌握农作物对其替代控制作用具有重要的研究价值。前期研究表明,油菜是替代控制小子虉草的优良农作物,然而,目前尚不清楚油菜类型与品种对其控制能力的影响。为此选取与小子虉草同域发生的不同类型(白菜型油菜、芥菜型油菜和甘蓝型油菜)油菜品种各3种,通过田间小区实验和室内化感作用测定,对比研究其对小子虉草的生长、繁殖、表型以及化感作用的影响。田间实验显示:竞争方式(种内或种间竞争)和油菜类型对小子虉草的地上生物量、种子数、株高、分枝数、叶面积和比叶面积存在极显著(P=0.0001)影响;而油菜品种对小子虉草的地上生物量(P=0.6064)、种子数(P=0.3577)、株高(P=0.4279)、分枝数(P=0.6357)、叶面积(P=0.8839)和比叶面积(P=0.3424)均无显著影响。3种类型油菜对小子虉草生长、繁殖以及表型的影响存在明显差异,其中芥菜型油菜对小子虉草的上述指标的影响最强,而白菜型油菜的影响最弱。室内生物测定显示,油菜对小子虉草具有化感抑制作用,当供试油菜叶片水提液浓度为0.1 g/mL时,小子虉草种子的萌发和幼苗的株高、根长、生物量均被显著抑制;研究也表明不同类型油菜对小子虉草的化感作用显著不同,同等条件下,芥菜型油菜对小子虉草的化感抑制作用最强。综上所述,油菜类型对外来入侵小子虉草的控制作用存在显著差异,其中芥菜型油菜对植物小子虉草的替代控制作用明显优于白菜型油菜和甘蓝型油菜,而其强的化感抑草特性或许是其强控草能力的原因之一。另外,本研究也为进一步利用油菜替代控制入侵植物小子虉草提供了参考。  相似文献

Canonical variate analysis of plants raised in a uniform environment was used to study the pattern of geographical variation in leaf shape ofCrepis tectorum (Asteraceae). The diversity in leaf shape was much greater among populations confined to areas with exposed bedrock in the Baltic region than among weed populations scattered throughout Europe and Canada. A Ward's clustering linked outcrop populations from the archipelago of SW. Finland and the islands of Öland (Sweden) and Saaremaa (Estonia) due to the deeply lobed leaves characterizing these populations, while outcrop populations along the coast of E. Sweden were grouped due to their weakly lobed, narrow and dentate leaves. Most of the weed populations were grouped together but there was no tendency for the variation in this group to be related to habitat or geographical location. A mosaic of variation reflected in sharp (random) differentiation among local populations was superimposed on the large-scale ecogeographical pattern.—Crossing data indicated that most of the variation in degree of leaf dissection is governed by one major gene with deeply lobed leaves dominant over weakly lobed leaves. I suggest that the simple pattern of inheritance may have favoured rapid evolutionary changes in leaf shape, particularly in the Baltic area which emerged relatively late from the sea. Genetic correlations may have constrained the pattern of variation at higher taxonomic levels, since some of the trait associations detected in a segregating F2 generation were also found at the among-population level.  相似文献

Control of the invasive wasp, Sirex noctilio Fabricius using the parasitic nematode Deladenus siricidicola Bedding is a well known example of a successful classical biological control program. Despite its wide-scale success, this control method has recently had poor success in the summer rainfall areas of South Africa. Data from previous studies showed variation in nematode parasitism from inoculated trees (inoculation success) between different tree sections and among inoculation times. They also pointed to moisture content of the wood or virulence of the nematode as the most likely underlying factors influencing variations in inoculation success. The results from our study showed that the highest levels of parasitism was obtained from early inoculations and from the bottom sections of trees, where moisture content of the wood was highest, supporting the hypothesis that moisture content influences parasitism. However, even when moisture content was adequate, average inoculation success remained below 25% and was often 0%, suggesting that there are other barriers to inoculation success. Different sources from which the nematodes were produced did not influence inoculation success, indicating that nematode virulence is most likely not the cause of the low success. Another interesting finding was that parasitized wasps were larger than unparasitized wasps. Background parasitism was present despite the poor success with past inoculations, but the data also suggest that the natural build-up of this population could be constrained by the same factors that influence inoculations.  相似文献

Mile-a-minute weed, Persicaria perfoliata (L.) H. Gross, is an invasive annual vine of Asian origin that has developed extensive monocultures, especially in disturbed open areas in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. A host-specific Asian weevil, Rhinoncomimus latipes Korotyaev, was approved for release in North America in 2004, and weevils have been reared at the New Jersey Department of Agriculture Beneficial Insect Laboratory since then. By the end of 2007 more than 53,000 weevils had been reared and released, mostly in New Jersey, but also in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The beetles established at 63 out of 65 sites (96.9%) where they were released between 2004 and 2007, with successful releases consisting of as few as 200 weevils. Weevils were recorded at 30 additional non-release sites in New Jersey, where they had dispersed at an average rate of 4.3 km/year. Standardized monitoring of fixed quadrats was conducted in paired release and control sites at eight locations. Significant differences in mile-a-minute weed populations in the presence and absence of weevils were found at three locations, with reduction in spring densities to 25% or less of what they had been at the start within 2–3 years at release sites, while weed densities at control sites were largely unchanged. Mile-a-minute weed populations at a fourth site were similarly reduced at the release site, but without control data for comparison due to rapid colonization of the paired control site. At the other four locations, all on islands, mile-a-minute weed populations were reduced at both release and control sites without large weevil populations developing, apparently due to environmental conditions such as late frost and extreme drought.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Mirabilis nyctaginea (Michx.) MacM. contributes to the plant's success as a weed and invader of disturbed habitats whereas that of M. Jalapa L. reflects its success as a cultivar. Plants of M. nyctaginea flowering in early summer produce chasmogamous flowers whereas plants flowering in late summer produce cleistogamous flowers. Plants of both species are self-compatible and flower behavior contributes to self-pollination. The flowers open late in the afternoon and close late the following morning. In M. nyctaginea flowers are effectively pollinated by bees both in the afternoon and morning, and during the night moths are effective pollinators. Mirabilis Jalapa is self-pollinating. Anther closure during rain showers, a result of water droplets falling into open anthers, minimizes pollen loss and is highly adaptive. The reproductive biology of M. nyctaginea and M. Jalapa is contrasted with that of the obligate outcrossing species M. multiflora (Torr.) Gray and M. froebelii (Behr) Greene.  相似文献
