Plesiadapids are extinct relatives of extant euarchontans (primates, dermopterans, and scandentians), which lived in North America and Europe during the Paleocene and Early Eocene. The only genus of plesiadapid whose species are absent from Paleocene strata is Platychoerops. Further, Platychoerops is the only group found in sediments post‐dating the Paleocene‐Eocene boundary (PEB) by a substantial period of time based on large samples. It is also substantially different from other plesiadapids in dental features thought to reflect ecology. Its evolution has been linked to the rapid global climate change and faunal turnover marking the PEB. Platychoerops and Plesiadapis tricuspidens have been reconstructed as members of a single lineage by some authors. We describe a specimen (right p3‐m3) that we attribute to a new species, Platychoeropsantiquus, from the unequivocally Paleocene (MP6) Mouras Quarry of Mont de Berru, France. It has strong morphological affinities to Platychoerops daubrei yet co‐occurs with many specimens of Plesiadapis tricuspidens, as well as the plesiadapid Chiromyoides campanicus. The existence of a species of Platychoerops prior to the PEB decouples the evolution of Platychoerops from the climate change and faunal turnover event associated with the PEB. Furthermore, the co‐occurrence of Platychoerops with P. tricuspidens refutes the idea of a single lineage for these taxa. Instead, Platychoerops may be more closely related to North American Plesiadapis cookei (a previous alternate hypothesis). We suggest character displacement in a Paleocene immigrant population of P. cookei resulting from competition with sympatric P. tricuspidens, as a likely scenario for the evolution of Platychoerops. Although interspecific differences in the relative development of molar occlusal features have been documented for most primate species, wear-related changes in these features are only beginning to be understood. In the present study, the notch between the metaconid and entoconid of M2 was examined in a skeletal sample of Macaca fascicularis, Presbytis cristatus, and Presbytis rubicunda from the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. Photogrammetric analyses yielded X, Y, and Z coordinates that were used to compute three angular measurements and two length measurements at the lingual notch. Statistical analyses of measurements from unworn dentitions indicated that the mesial slope of the entoconid is steeper than the distal slope of the metaconid in all three species. In addition, interspecific comparisons demonstrated that P. cristatus has the steepest lingual notch bordered by the largest molar shearing crests, while P. rubicunda and M. fascicularis have molar shearing crests of similar size, with P. rubicunda merely having higher cusps that are closer together than those of M. fascicularis. Fanally, P. cristatus shows a smaller decrease in lingual cusp relief with wear than M. fascicularis, while P. cristatus and P. rubicunda probably show similar decreases in lingual cusp relief with wear. The differences in wear-related changes in lingual cusp relief between M. fascicularis and P. cristatus may well be related to the frugivorous/folivorous dietary differences between these species.  相似文献

Dental topographic analysis allows comparisons of variably worn teeth within and between species to infer relationships between dental form and diet in living primates, with implications for reconstructing feeding adaptations of fossil forms. Although analyses to date have been limited mainly to the M2s of a few primate taxa, these suggest that dental topographic analysis holds considerable promise. Still, larger samples including a greater range of species and different tooth types are needed to determine the potential of this approach. Here we examine dental topography of molar teeth of Cercocebus torquatus (n=48), Cercopithecus campbelli (n=50), Colobus polykomos (n=50), and Procolobus badius (n=50). This is the first such study of large samples of Old World monkeys, and the first to include analyses of both M1s and M2s. Average slope, relief, and surface angularity were computed and compared among tooth types, wear stages, and species. Results suggest that (1) data for M1s and M2s cannot be compared directly; (2) slope and relief decline with wear on M2s of all taxa, and M1s of the colobines, whereas angularity does not generally change except in the most worn specimens; and (3) folivorous colobines tend to have more sloping surfaces and more relief than do frugivorous cercopithecines, though angularity does not clearly separate taxa by diet. The presence of phospholipase A activity was detected in three dermatophytes:Microsporum cookei, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, andEpidermophyton floccosum. The activity was always higher inT. mentagrophytes than inM. cookei andE. floccosum. All exhibited phospholipase A1 and A2 activities, but the activity was largely A2 inM. cookei and A1 inE. floccosum. T. mentagrophytes possessed almost equal activities of phospholipase A1 and A2.  相似文献

In terrestrial ecosystems, atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has greatly increased N availability relative to other elements, particularly phosphorus (P). Alterations in the availability of N relative to P can affect plant growth rate and functional traits, as well as resource allocation to above‐ versus belowground biomass (MA and MB). Biomass allocation among individual plants is broadly size‐dependent, and this can often be described as an allometric relationship between MA and MB, as represented by the equation , or log MA = logα + βlog MB. Here, we investigated whether the scaling exponent or regression slope may be affected by the N:P supply ratio. We hypothesized that the regression slope between MA and MB should be steeper under a high N:P supply ratio due to P limitation, and shallower under a low N:P supply ratio due to N limitation. To test these hypotheses, we experimentally altered the levels of N, P, and the N:P supply ratio (from 1.7:1 to 135:1) provided to five alpine species representing two functional groups (grasses and composite forbs) under greenhouse conditions; we then measured the effects of these treatments on plant morphology and tissue content (SLA, leaf area, and leaf and root N/P concentrations) and on the scaling relationship between MA and MB. Unbalanced N:P supply ratios generally negatively affected plant biomass, leaf area, and tissue nutrient concentration in both grasses and composite forbs. High N:P ratios increased tissue N:P ratios in both functional groups, but more in the two composite forbs than in the grasses. The positive regression slopes between log MA and log MB exhibited by plants raised under a N:P supply ratio of 135:1 were significantly steeper than those observed under the N:P ratio of 1.7:1 and 15:1. Synthesis: Plant biomass allocation is highly plastic in response to variation in the N:P supply ratio. Studies of resource allocation of individual plants should focus on the effects of nutrient ratios as well as the availability of individual elements. The two forb species were more sensitive than grasses to unbalanced N:P supplies. To evaluate the adaptive significance of this plasticity, the effects of unbalanced N:P supply ratio on individual lifetime fitness must be measured.  相似文献

Melanopsidae are an important component of the freshwater fauna of the subtropical to temperate regions of the Western Palaearctic and also are reported from Zealandia, representing an unparalleled disjunction among a group of freshwater animals. We sequenced markers for species of all constituent genera covering the entire range of the group. Our phylogenetic analyses indicate that Melanopsidae are only monophyletic when excluding Holandriana from the Balkans, which was found to be more closely related to Pleuroceridae (eastern North America) and Semisuclospiridae (western North America and eastern Asia) than to the remaining melanopsids. It is, therefore, placed in the previously proposed family Amphimelaniidae. Zemelanopsis from New Zealand and Caledomelanella gen.n. from New Caledonia were recovered as a deeply divergent clade, here suggested to represent Zemelanopsidae fam.n. as the sister group of Melanopsidae s.s. The genus Microcolpia, including Mdaudebartii and the extinct Mparreyssii, was recovered as a moderately well-supported sister group of Melanopsis s.s., which comprises three distinct lineages: one from the western Mediterranean region, a second from the eastern Mediterranean region and the Near to Middle East, and a third from thermal springs in Tuscany. Although the Italian populations show little variability, both the eastern and western Melanopsis clades exhibit a high degree of variation in shell form and/or sculpture. Whether this is indicative of more than a species pair each (Mpraemorsa/cariosa and Mbuccinoidea/costata) within the eastern and western clade, respectively, or the result of parallel evolution currently cannot be answered with certainty. Distinct populations were not recovered as monophyletic clades in some cases, which may indicate incomplete reproductive isolation. We compare the timeframe for the evolution of major “melanopsid” lineages with geological events, and elucidate scenarios that may have shaped the distribution patterns observed today.  相似文献

Under glasshouse conditions Cajanus cajan plants grown in a dark red latosol were fertilized with soluble simple superphosphate and hardly soluble rock phosphate and inoculated with three VA mycorrhizal fungi (M1, Gigaspora margarita; M2, Scutellospora verrucosa; M3, Acaulospora rehmii) from the Cerrado ecosystem, Brazil. Only with rock phosphate plant growth was significantly increased by all fungi. Enhanced P uptake corresponded with higher yields and proved to be a characteristic of the VA myccorhizae. A definite relationship between infection intensity and efficiency of VA mycorrhizae was not detected. Spore production was generally more pronounced in the treatment with rock phosphate, especially with M1 and M2. Nodulation of Cajanus cajan was greatly improved by all fungi in the treatment with rock phosphate. It is suggested that the increased plant development and nodulation was due to improved uptake of P by mycorrhiza.  相似文献

Irrigation of agricultural land with saline waters can lead to soil degradation. In this paper the effect of the irrigation with water containing different concentrations of NaCl or Na2SO4 (0.1 M, 0.3 M, 0.6 M, 0.8 M, 1 M, and 1.3 M) on the biological and biochemical characteristics of a calciorthid soil was studied. In general, the increase of scil electrical conductivity caused by the addition of saline solutions had a negative effect on soil's biological and biochemical fertility, (that related directly with the soil's microbiological activity) this effect being more noticeable with NaCl than with Na2SO4. Soil microbial respiration was inhibited as much as 57% by a 1.3 M solution of NaCl. The activity of hydrolases such as protease, -glucosidase and phosphatase was more negatively affected by salinity than that of oxidoreductases (dehydrogenase and catalase). Soil NO3 - content decreased with salinity while NH4 + content increased. Carbohydrate content, which is closely connected with soil aggregate stability, was also negatively affected by salinity.  相似文献

Microevolutionary trends in the dentition of the Red fox (Vulpes vulpes)   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Microevolutionary trends in dental traits were studied in a Polish population of the Red fox, Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758). Changes in qualitative and quantitative traits over a 70‐year interval were analysed in 1453 museum specimens collected between 1927 and 1996. Over that period, there were qualitative trends towards increasing complication of occlusal crown surface in posterior premolars (i.e. P4, P3, P4) and I3. Other cheek teeth did not undergo directional change. Changes in trait correlations were assessed using samples from the 1960s and 1990s. The correlations between C1–C1 and M1–M2 increased, while correlation values in the incisor region (I1–I2, I1–I1, I1–I2, I3–I2), carnassial region (P4–M1, P4–M1 and M1–M1) and in P2–P1 decreased. These changes may be related to increasing dietary opportunism of the Red fox during the 20th century.  相似文献

The taxonomic status of three small [probably less than ca. 600 mm in the largest total length (TL)] and poorly known species, Trichiurus brevis Wang and You, 1992 and T. minor Li, 1992, both from South China Sea, and T. russelli Dutt and Thankam, 1966, from Bengal Bay, was reexamined. Trichiurus brevis and T. russelli, being valid species, are redescribed and a neotype is designated for the latter. Trichiurus brevis is considered to be a senior synonym of T. minor, there being no significant differences in their type specimens. Both valid species, i.e., T. brevis and T. russelli, are similar to T. lepturus Linnaeus, 1758 (larger than ca. 1000 mm TL) in general appearance, but clearly differ from the latter in having the top of the supraoccipital crest situated directly above the posterior margin of eye (vs. well behind posterior margin), lower number of total vertebrae (147–155 and 149–153, respectively, in the former two species vs. 168–173 in T. lepturus), longer dorsal fin base (mean 87% and mean 84% vs. mean 76% of TL), and shorter caudal peduncle length (6% and 8% vs. 13% of TL). Furthermore, the former two species are characterized by having the anal fin origin situated below about the 32nd–35th dorsal fin ray base, whereas in T. lepturus it is situated below the 37th–41st dorsal fin ray base. We recognize that T. brevis and T. russelli together comprise a species group, defined as the “T. russelli complex,” in the genus Trichiurus, the two species differing in snout shape (strongly pointed in T. brevis vs. moderately pointed in T. russelli), snout length [mean 35% vs. mean 30% of head length (HL)], preopercle length (22% vs. 19% HL), predorsal length (70% vs. 63% HL), and dermal eye opening (16% vs. 18% HL). We examined foraging behaviors of four insectivorous bird species (Great Tit Parus major, Varied Tit P. varius, Long-tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus and Japanese White-eye Zosterops japonica) on the two oak species (Q. serrata and Q. variabilis) in relation to fine-scale foliage structures, abundance, and distribution of folivorous insects and physical and chemical characteristics of leaves. There was no difference in the mean number of insects for each oak species, but there was a significant difference in the mean biomass. The distance from twigs or branches to leaf tips or blade-petiole junctions showed that leaves of Q. variabilis were more dispersed than those of Q. serrata. The different size distribution of insects influenced insect sizes selected and foraging maneuvers used by each bird species. Parus major and P. varius fed on beetles (low energy gain) with perch-gleaning (the most energy-saving maneuver) from the upper side of leaves on Q. variabilis, whereas they fed on large lepidopteran larvae (high energy gain) from the lower side of leaves on Q. serrata using a variety of maneuvers (including energy-consuming ones). Both A. caudatus and Z. japonica fed on insects from the lower side of leaves by hang-gleaning and reach-gleaning, respectively. These species appeared to be morphologically adapted to the energy-consuming but more effective maneuvers used to take preys from the undersides of leaves. We hypothesize that differences in foliage structures between closely related species of trees have evolved as a balance between defense against folivorous insects and attraction of insectivorous birds.  相似文献

The Late Miocene hominoids recovered from Lufeng (Lufengpithecus) and Yuanmou of Yunnan Province, China, are among the most numerous hominoid fossils in Eurasia. They have yielded critical evidence for the evolutionary history, biogeography and paleobiology of Miocene hominoids. We examined and compared the wear pattern and differences of 804 molars of the Yuanmou hominoid and Lufengpithecus. Our results indicate that both the upper and lower molars of the Yuanmou hominoids were more heavily worn than those of Lufengpithecus. The wear patterns of the individual molars between the Yuanmou hominoid and Lufengpithecus also are different. The heaviest wear of lower molars of the Yuanmou hominoid occur in M2, followed by M1 and M3. In Lufengpithecus, M1 and M3 were more heavily worn than M2. There are differences in wear between the upper and lower molars for the two hominoids. Among the various factors related to tooth wear, we suggest that the main reason for the tooth wear differences between the Yuanmou hominoid and Lufengpithecus may be that they had different diets. More soft dietary items like leaves and berries were probably consumed by Lufengpithecus, and the Yuanmou hominoid may mainly have feed on harder or frugivorous diets. This result complements findings from previous studies of tooth size proportion, and the development of lower molar shearing crests in the 2 samples. Enamel thickness, living environment, behavior patterns, and population structure also might account for dental wear differences between the Yuanmou hominoid and Lufengpithecus.  相似文献

Although tropical estuaries are important juvenile habitats for the snapper, Lutjanus russelli, the extent of this utilisation, and relationships to physical variation are unknown. We used fish trapsto investigate spatial and temporal patterns of distribution, abundance and size of L. russelli within and between three tropical estuaries (Cattle, Barramundi and Alligator Creeks) over a two year period. L. russelli showed no indication of spatial segregation by size along the lengths of the estauries. The probability of capturing L. russelli was similar throughout Barramundi Creek and the seaward parts of Cattle Creek. However, the probability of capture fell markedly in upstream regions of Cattle Creek. These areas where characterised by depressed salinity levels due to seasonal flooding. High probabilities of capture of L. russelli during the wet and post-wet seasons in the whole of Barramundi Creek correlated with the time of smallest modal sizes. Thisreflected the entry of large numbers of small recruits into the trappable population. Temporal patterns in mean length were consistent for both years. The major feature of the size data was a clear pattern of seasonal change in the mean fork length of L. russelli, with largest mean sizes occurring in the pre-wet and the smallest mean sizes in the wet and post-wet seasons. This pattern probably reflected the interaction of four processes; the entry of new recruits into the trappable population, growth and mortality during residence in the estuarine nursery habitats, and migration of large fish away from the estuaries. The three creeks studied provided L. russelli with a harsh and extremely variable environment. Over the three creeks, salinities ranged from extremely hyposaline (0) to very hypersaline (55.5) and varied up to 39 within a location. However, despite the substantial physical differences and the spatial separation of the three estuaries, the patterns of temporal change were clear and consistent. Overall, the annual pattern of change insize seemed to relate more to biological processes of recruitment, mortality and migration than to responses to physical variability.  相似文献

Geographic range shifts can cause secondary contact and hybridization between closely related species, revealing mechanisms of species formation and integrity. These dynamics typically play out in restricted geographic regions, but highly vagile species may experience major distributional changes resulting in broad areas of contact. The Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a dispersive waterbird of the Old World and Australia that colonized eastern North America in the early 19th century and came into contact with the native White‐faced Ibis (P. chihi). Putative hybrids between the two species have been observed across North America. To examine the population genomic consequences of this natural invasion, we sequenced 4,616 ultraconserved elements from 66 individuals sampled across the distributions of falcinellus, chihi, and the Puna Ibis (P. ridgwayi) of South America. We found genomic differentiation among the three species. Loci with high sequence divergence were often shared across all pairwise species comparisons, were associated with regions of high nucleotide diversity, and were concentrated on the Z chromosome. We detected signals of genetic admixture between chihi and falcinellus in individuals both near and far from their core area of sympatry. Genomic cline analyses revealed evidence of greater introgression into falcinellus from chihi, but we found little evidence for selection against hybrids. We also found signals of admixture between ridgwayi and South American populations of chihi. Our results indicate vagile species can experience pervasive introgression upon secondary contact, although we suggest these dynamics may be more ephemeral than the stable hybrid zones often observed in less dispersive organisms.  相似文献

The effects of a novel nonpeptide NK1 tachy-kinin receptor antagonist, SR 140333, on the functional consequences of NK1 receptor activation in a human astrocytoma cell line, U373MG, were investigated. Radioligand binding conducted with 125l-Bolton-Hunter substance P revealed a competitive inhibition by SR 140333 and its R enantiomer SR 140603 with Ki values of 0.74 and 7.40 nM, respectively. The NK1-selective agonist, [Sar9,Met(O2)11]-substance P, stimulated the formation of inositol phosphates with an EC50 of 3.8 × 10?9M. SR 140333 blocked the stimulatory effect of this agonist (10?7M) with an IC50 of 1.6 × 10?9M,whereas the effect of another NK1 agonist, septide (EC50= 1.5 × 10?8M)was antagonized with an IC50 of 2.1 × 10?10M.Enhancement of [3H]taurine release by [Sar9,Met(O2)11]-substance P (EC50= 7.4 × 10?9M) was also inhibited by SR 140333 with an IC50 of 1.8 × 10?9 M. SR 140603 was 10-fold less potent than SR 140333 in inhibiting inositol monophosphate formation and [3H]taurine release. The calcium mobilization induced by [Sar9,Met(O2)11]-substance P (10?8M) was totally prevented by 10?8MSR 140333. Patchclamp experiments showed that SR 140333 depressed the outward current evoked by 5 × 10?8M [Sar9, Met(O2)11]-substance P with an IC50 of 1.3 × 10?9M. The expression of c-fos was stimulated by [Sar9,Met(O2)11]-substance P with an EC50 of 2.5 × 10?10M, an effect that was also inhibited by SR 140333 with an IC50 of 1.1 × 10?9M. The present results illustrate the sequential events of the response elicited by NK1 agonists, which were antagonized by SR 140333, demonstrating its powerful NK1 antagonist activity on a functional basis.  相似文献

Like Bythotrephes, Bosmina (Eubosmina) coregoni coregoni Baird appears to have invaded North America from Eurasia, since there are no records from before 1965. All previously known North American populations have a well-rounded ventrocaudal corner of the carapace, suggesting that the founding race is one of the rotunda type, the most common eubosminid in European lakes. In Lake Muskoka, immediately to the east of Georgian Bay, Ontario, eubosminids were found that shared features of B. (E.) longicornis kessleri Ulianine. In contrast to other North America populations of B.(E. )c. coregoni, these specimens have a short, broadly based mucro. Morphological features suggest that these are interspecific F1-hybrids between B. (E.) longispina Leydig and B. (E.) coregoni, without any signs of introgression. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Dr. John C.H. Carter.  相似文献

Agastache sect. Agastache consists of seven species in North America and one disjunct in eastern Asia. Starch-gel electrophoresis of enzymatic proteins was employed to assess genetic relationships among these species and to estimate the amount of genetic divergence between the North American and Asian populations. Species of the western United States appear to be better adapted for outcrossing than are the others and are much more genetically variable, with higher levels of heterozygosity per individual, more alleles per species, and higher percentages of polymorphic loci per population. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling of Nei's genetic distances among 32 populations partitioned the section into four discrete groups: 1) A. nepetoides (eastern North America), 2) A. scrophulariifolia and A. foeniculum (eastern and central North America), 3) the four species of the western United States (A. urticifolia, A. occidentalis, A. parvifolia and A. cusickii) and 4) A. rugosa (eastern Asia). Asian Agastache, separated from its American congeners for over twelve million years, differed from American populations at two of fifteen loci surveyed. Nei's genetic distances between Asian and North American populations ranged from 0.2877 to 0.6734.  相似文献

Mesophyll cells of leaf slices of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) absorb six to ten times more K+ than Rb+ from 0.1 mM single chlorides of these cations. Absorption of 42K+ from 0.1 mM42KCl is much more inhibited by low concentrations of Rb2SO4 than by K2SO4. The isotherm for K+ absorption is biphasic in the range 0.1–1.1 mM, and K+ is more effective than Rb+ in causing transition from phase 1 to phase 2.  相似文献

Synthetic myosin filaments of rabbit were prepared. Electron microscopy showed that the number-average length (Ln = 470 nm) and sharpness in length distribution (Lw/Ln = 1.036) were independent of ionic strengths of 134, 74, and 44 mM, whereas the number ratio of M-filaments (about 15 nm in diameter at the bare zone) to m-filaments (about 10 nm) strongly depended on ionic strength (IS); the major filaments were M-filaments at IS = 134 mM, m-filaments at IS = 74 mM, and almost exclusively m-filaments at IS = 44 mM. Dynamic light scattering showed that the change in diameter with the change in ionic strength by 2-h dialysis was reversible. Combination of dynamic light scattering and sedimentation studies suggested a dynamic equilibrium between M- and m-filaments. Dynamic light-scattering spectra at IS = 134 and 74 mM could be analyzed by a theory for rigid rods, whereas those at IS = 44 mM only by introducing semiflexibility of filaments; m-filaments are more flexible at IS = 44 than at 74 mM.  相似文献
