Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis (Nordstedt) Gomont was cultivated under light‐limited conditions in 5‐L open tanks by daily supplying NH4Cl as nitrogen source. Exponentially increasing feeding rates were adopted to prevent ammonia toxicity. The total feeding time (T) was varied between 12 and 20 days, and the starting (m0) and total (mT) quantities of the nitrogen source per unit reactor volume were varied in the ranges 0.19–1.7 mM and 2.3–23.1 mM, respectively. This intermittent addition of the nitrogen source prevented ammonia from reaching inhibitory levels and ensured final cell concentrations (Xm) and cell productivities (Px) comparable with those of batch runs with KNO3. Moreover, the lower nitrogen addition due to the use of NH4Cl rather than KNO3 allowed for higher nitrogen‐to‐cell conversions (Yx/n). These results were evaluated using three‐factor, five‐level, central composite experimental planning, combined with the response surface methodology, selecting T, m0, and mT as the independent variables and Xm, Px, and Yx/n as the response variables. This approach allowed us to identify, through the simultaneous optimization of the variables, T=16 days, m0=1.7 mM, and mT=21.5 mM as the best conditions for A. platensis cultivation at 72 μmol photons·m?2·s?1. Under these conditions, a maximum cell concentration of 1239 mg ·L?1 was obtained, which is a value comparable with that obtained using KNO3 as nitrogen source and nearly coincident with the theoretical one estimated by the response surface methodology.  相似文献

The effect of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) on nitrogen utilization was determined in peas (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum and treated with nutrient solutions containing no combined nitrogen, 16 mM NO3?, or 16 mM NH4+. Plants were grown under controlled conditions at three PPFD values ranging from severely limiting to nearly saturating. Carboxylation efficiencies and CO2-exchange rates were highest in the N2-fixing plants and lowest in plants supplied with NH4+, and they generally increased with increasing PPFD. Photoefficiencies increased with PPFD but did not differ appreciably with the form of nitrogen applied. Nitrogen fixation, calculated from C2H2-reduction and H2-evolution data, was inhibited more by NH4+ than by NO3?application. Inhibition was counteracted by increasing PPFD. Percentage nitrogen decreased with increasing PPFD in plants treated with combined nitrogen and increased in the plants dependent on N2 fixation. The data reveal that photosynthetic efficiency and the capacity to fix N2 in peas are functions of PPFD and the availability of combined nitrogen and that these two factors are interrelated.  相似文献

Rates of net photosynthesis (P N) and transpiration (E), and leaf temperature (TL) of maintenance leaves of tea under plucking were affected by photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) of 200–2 200 μmol m−2 s−1. P N gradually increased with the increase of PPFD from 200 to 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 and thereafter sharply declined. Maximum P N was 13.95 μmol m−2 s−1 at 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD. There was no significant variation of P N among PPFD at 1 400–1 800 μmol m−2 s−1. Significant drop of P N occurred at 2 000 μmol m−2 s−1. PPFD at 2 200 μmol m−2 s−1 reduced photosynthesis to 6.92 μmol m−2 s−1. PPFD had a strong correlation with TL and E. Both TL and E linearly increased from 200 to 2 200 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD. TL and E were highly correlated. The optimum TL for maximum P N was 26.0 °C after which P N declined significantly. E had a positive correlation with P N.  相似文献

The responses to irradiance of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation and photosystem 2 (PS2) electron transport were simultaneously studied by gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence measurement in two-year-old apple tree leaves (Malus pumila Mill. cv. Tengmu No.1/Malus hupehensis Rehd). Net photosynthetic rate (P N) was saturated at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) 600-1 100 (mol m-2 s-1, while the PS2 non-cyclic electron transport (P-rate) showed a maximum at PPFD 800 mol m-2 s-1. With PPFD increasing, either leaf potential photosynthetic CO2 assimilation activity (Fd/Fs) and PS2 maximal photochemical activity (Fv/Fm) decreased or the ratio of the inactive PS2 reaction centres (RC) [(Fi – Fo)/(Fm – Fo)] and the slow relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qs) increased from PPFD 1 200 mol m-2 s-1, but cyclic electron transport around photosystem 1 (RFp), irradiance induced PS2 RC closure [(Fs – Fo)/Fm – Fo)], and the fast and medium relaxing non-photochemical Chl fluorescence quenching (qf and qm) increased remarkably from PPFD 900 (mol m-2 s-1. Hence leaf photosynthesis of young apple leaves saturated at PPFD 800 mol m-2 s-1 and photoinhibition occurred above PPFD 900 mol m-2 s-1. During the photoinhibition at different irradiances, young apple tree leaves could dissipate excess photons mainly by energy quenching and state transition mechanisms at PPFD 900-1 100 mol m-2 s-1, but photosynthetic apparatus damage was unavoidable from PPFD 1 200 mol m-2 s-1. We propose that Chl fluorescence parameter P-rate is superior to the gas exchange parameter P N and the Chl fluorescence parameter Fv/Fm as a definition of saturation irradiance and photoinhibition of plant leaves.  相似文献

Growth response of cotton to CO2 enrichment in differing light environments   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experiments were conducted to examine the growth responses of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv. Coker 315) to CO2 enrichment under different light regimes. Plants were exposed to 350 or 700 μl l?1 CO2 and six light treatments differing in photosynthetic period length (8 or 16 h) and in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) for 32 days of vegetative growth. Higher PPFD (1 100 μmol m?2 s?1) was provided by a combination of high intensity discharge and incandescent lamps (HID), and lower PPFD (550 μmol m?2 s?1) was provided by fluorescent and incandescent lamps (F) or HID and incandescent lamps with shade cloth (HIDs). Growth was generally much slower with the 8-h photosynthetic periods, but the growth stimulation by CO2 enrichment was larger than with 16-h photosynthetic periods. After 28 to 32 days of treatment, the growth enhancement with CO2 enrichment was 152 and 78% for 8- and 16-h photosynthetic periods, respectively, under HID; 100 and 77% in F, and 77 and 56% in HIDs. The higher PPFD of HID positively influenced the CO2 effect only at the slower growth rate in the 8-h light period. The stimulation of leaf area expansion by CO2 enrichment was also greater with the 8-h photosynthetic period for all light sources. These results, and others on net assimilation rate, shoot to root dry weight ratios and specific leaf weights, suggest that the growth response to CO2 enrichment with the longer photosynthetic period was depressed by limiting factors, perhaps nutritional, in the growth environment. The results also show that extensive variability in CO2 response can occur under light intensities which are often used in growth chamber experiments.  相似文献

Knowledge concerning the effects of several abiotic factors on the physiology of carrageenophytes is essential both in ecological and economic standpoints, to ensure their sufficient supply for the sustainability of seaweed‐based industries. This paper presents the photosynthetic characteristics of farmed carrageenophytes, E ucheuma denticulatum and K appaphycus alvarezii [brown (BRN) and green (GRN) color morphotypes] from Sulawesi Utara (Sulawesi Island), Indonesia, as determined by examining their photosynthetic response across different temperatures and irradiances using dissolved oxygen measurements and pulse‐amplitude modulated fluorometer. Net photosynthesis–irradiance ( P E ) curves at 26°C revealed that net photosynthetic rates of the three seaweeds gradually increased until the estimated saturation irradiances ( E k ) of 58 μmol photons m? 2 s?1 (49–68 μmol photons m? 2 s?1, 95% Bayesian prediction intervals; BPI) for E . denticulatum, and 158 and 143 μmol photons m? 2 s?1 (134–185 and 99–203 μmol photons m? 2 s?1, 95% BPI) for BRN and GRN K . alvarezii, respectively; and that no photoinhibition was observed at the highest irradiance of 1000 μmol photons m? 2 s?1. All seaweed samples exhibited photosynthetic tolerance to high PAR as shown by their recovery in maximum quantum yields (Fv / Fm ) following chronic exposures; as well as tolerance over a broad range of temperature, which is from 19 to 33°C for E . denticulatum, 20–29°C for BRN K . alvarezii, and 17–32°C for GRN K . alvarezii. Temperature responses of these carrageenophytes indicated that they were well‐adapted to the annual seawater temperatures in the cultivation site; however, they are also likely close to threshold levels for thermal inhibition, given the decline in Fv / Fm above 30°C.  相似文献

Hylocereus undatus (Haworth) Britton and Rose growing in controlled environment chambers at 370 and 740 μmol CO2 mol?1 air showed a Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) pattern of CO2 uptake, with 34% more total daily CO2 uptake under the doubled CO2 concentration and most of the increase occurring in the late afternoon. For both CO2 concentrations, 90% of the maximal daily CO2 uptake occurred at a total daily photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of only 10 mol m?2 day?1 and the best day/night air temperatures were 25/15°C. Enhancement of the daily net CO2 uptake by doubling the CO2 concentration was greater under the highest PPFD (30 mol m?2 day?1) and extreme day/night air temperatures (15/5 and 45/35°C). After 24 days of drought, daily CO2 uptake under 370 μmol CO2 mol?1 was 25% of that under 740 μmol CO2 mol?1. The ratio of variable to maximal chlorophyll fluorescence (Fy/Fm) decreased as the PPFD was raised above 5 mol m?2 day?1, at extreme day/night temperatures and during drought, suggesting that stress occurred under these conditions. Fv/Fm was higher under the doubled CO2 concentration, indicating that the current CO2 concentration was apparently limiting for photosynthesis. Thus net CO2 uptake by the shade-tolerant H. undatus, the photosynthetic efficiency of which was greatest at low PPFDs. showed a positive response to doubling the CO2 concentration, especially under stressful environmental conditions.  相似文献

Spirulina platensis (= Arthrospira fusiformis) was isolated from Lake Chitu, a saline, alkaline lake in Ethiopia, where it forms an almost unialgal population. Optimum growth conditions were studied in a turbidostat. Cultures grown in modified Zarrouk's medium and exposed to a range of light intensities (20–500 µmol photons m–2s–1) showed a maximum specific growth rate (µmax) of 1.78 d–1. Quantum yield for growth (µ) was 3.8% at the optimum light for growth of 330 µmol photons m–2s–1, and ranged from 2.8 to 9.4%. With increase in irradiance, the chlorophyll a concentration decreased, and the carotenoids/chlorophyll a ratio increased by a factor of 2.4. The phosphorus to carbon ratio (P/C) showed some variation, while the nitrogen to carbon ratio (N/C) remained relatively constant, thus causing fluctuations in the N:P ratio (7–11) of cells. An optimum N:P ratio of about 7 was attained in cells growing at the optimum light for growth. Results from the continuous culture experiments agreed well with maximum values of photosynthetic efficiency given in the literature for natural populations of S. platensis in the soda lakes of East Africa, Lake Arenguade (Ethiopia), and Lake Simbi (Kenya).  相似文献

Diurnal changes of photosynthesis in the leaves of grapevine (Vitis vinifera × V. labrusca) cultivars Campbell Early and Kyoho grown in the field were compared with respect to gas exchanges and actual quantum yield of photosystem 2 (ΦPS2) in late May. Net photosynthetic rate (PN) of the two cultivars rapidly increased in the morning, saturated at photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) from 1200 to 1500 μmol m−2 s−1 between 10:00 and 12:00 and slowly decreased after midday. Maximum PN was 13.7 and 12.5 μmol m−2 s−1 in Campbell Early and Kyoho, respectively. The stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate changed in parallel with PN, indicating that PN was greatly affected by gs. However, the decrease in PN after midday under saturating PPFD was also associated with the observed depression of ΦPS2 at high PPFD. The substantial increase in the leaf to air vapour pressure deficit after midday might also contribute to decline of gs and PN.  相似文献

The rapid development of human activities has caused serious eutrophication of coastal waters in China in the recent decades. The study of the biofiltration capacity of Laminaria japonica under laboratory conditions showed a significant nutrient uptake. After 36 h of incubation, around 42%, 46%, 44% of N and 45%, 42%, 35% of P were removed from three gradients of medium concentrations, respectively. In the conditions of different ratios of N/P and NO3–N/NH4–N, the optimum N/P ratio for nutrient uptake was 7.4 and L. japonica prefered NO3–N rather than NH4–N as nitrogen source. Temperature and irradiance affected uptake rates significantly. The maximal N uptake rate appeared at 10 °C and 18 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and the maximal P uptake rate was found at 15 °C and 144 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Moreover, further studies were needed to investigate the bioremediation potential of L. japonica in the open sea.  相似文献

Net photosynthetic rate (P N) of Valeriana jatamansi plants, grown under nylon net shade or under different tree canopies, was saturated with photons at 1 000 mol m–2 s–1 photosynthetic photon-flux-density (PPFD), whereas open-grown plants were able to photosynthesise even at higher PPFD, e.g. of 2 000 mol m–2 s–1. Plants grown under net shade had higher total chlorophyll (Chl) content per unit area of leaf surface. However, Chl a/b ratio was maximal in open-grown plants, but remained unchanged in plants grown in nylon net shade and under different tree canopies. Sun-grown plants had thicker leaves (higher leaf mass per leaf area unit), higher wax content, and higher P N than shade grown plants. Thus V. jatamansi is able to acclimate to high PPFD and therefore this Himalayan species may be cultivated in open habitat to meet the ever-increasing industrial demand.  相似文献

Green nectaries have been frequently mentioned in the literature, leading to the assumption that photosynthesis of nectaries can supply the carbohydrates secreted in the nectar, especially when storage of starch is seen in the plastids in nectaries and this starch disappears during secretion. Photosynthesis in nectaries can also provide reduction equivalents for the nectar–redox cycle and energy for secretion. However, quantitative data on the photosynthetic capacity of nectaries are largely missing. Therefore, in the present study, the photosynthetic capacity of green nectaries from a range of plants was screened; 20 floral nectaries (including six septal nectaries) and six extrafloral nectaries were studied. For the screening, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured as depending on photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Parameters measured were basic ground fluorescence (F) and quantum yield (Y0) of the dark adapted sample at 0 PPFD. From the light saturation curves saturating PPFD (PPFDsat), quantum yield at saturation (Ysat) and maximum apparent photosynthetic electron transport rates (ETRmax) were obtained. For comparison, leaves of the plants were also measured. In most cases, the performance of the nectaries was lower than that of the leaves. F was lower in 14 floral and four extrafloral nectaries (69% of total), ETRmax was lower in 18 floral and four extrafloral nectaries (85%), Ysat was lower in 15 floral and three extrafloral nectaries (69%). In 18 floral and two extrafloral nectaries (77%) Y0 was well below 0.8, indicating photoinhibition. In contrast, the range of ETRmax for green nectaries was 25–140 μmol m?2 s?1 and overlaps well with that of green tissues in general. The lower end of the range of rates of photosynthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake of sun leaves in the literature is 10 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1. Taking this value for sun‐adapted green nectaries, i.e. having a PPFDsat > 1000 μmol m?2 s?1, with an area of nectar tissue measured as 3–50 mm2 per flower, sugar secretion related to photosynthetic CO2 fixation in the green nectaries is estimated at approximately 0.2–3.0 μmol hexose units flower?1 day?1. This is compares well in order of magnitude with the range of secretion given in the literature and clearly suggests that photosynthetic activity of green nectaries can explain a significant part, if not all, of the sugar secreted. In some nectaries ETR did not saturate with PPFD. This could be attributable to spillover from photosystem II to photosystem I and cyclic photosynthetic electron transport. It is in agreement with observations in the literature and my preliminary findings that nectary plastids often lack grana thylakoids where photosytem II is located. Cyclic photophosphorylation could provide adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy for the nectaries. This needs further investigation. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 173 , 1–11.  相似文献

The toxigenic diatom Pseudo‐nitzschia cuspidata, isolated from the U.S. Pacific Northwest, was examined in unialgal batch cultures to evaluate domoic acid (DA) toxicity and growth as a function of light, N substrate, and growth phase. Experiments conducted at saturating (120 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1) and subsaturating (40 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1) photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), demonstrate that P. cuspidata grows significantly faster at the higher PPFD on all three N substrates tested [nitrate (NO3?), ammonium (NH4+), and urea], but neither cellular toxicity nor exponential growth rates were strongly associated with one N source over the other at high PPFD. However, at the lower PPFD, the exponential growth rates were approximately halved, and the cells were significantly more toxic regardless of N substrate. Urea supported significantly faster growth rates, and cellular toxicity varied as a function of N substrate with NO3?‐supported cells being significantly more toxic than both NH4+‐ and urea‐supported cells at the low PPFD. Kinetic uptake parameters were determined for another member of the P. pseudodelicatissima complex, P. fryxelliana. After growth of these cells on NO3? they exhibited maximum specific uptake rates (Vmax) of 22.7, 29.9, 8.98 × 10?3 · h?1, half‐saturation constants (Ks) of 1.34, 2.14, 0.28 μg‐at N · L?1, and affinity values (α) of 17.0, 14.7, 32.5 × 10?3 · h?1/(μg‐at N · L?1) for NO3?, NH4+ and urea, respectively. These labo‐ratory results demonstrate the capability of P. cuspidata to grow and produce DA on both oxidized and reduced N substrates during both exponential and stationary growth phases, and the uptake kinetic results for the pseudo‐cryptic species, P. fryxelliana suggest that reduced N sources from coastal runoff could be important for maintenance of these small pennate diatoms in U.S. west coast blooms, especially during times of low ambient N concentrations.  相似文献

Although sea‐ice represents a harsh physicochemical environment with steep gradients in temperature, light, and salinity, diverse microbial communities are present within the ice matrix. We describe here the photosynthetic responses of sea‐ice microalgae to varying irradiances. Rapid light curves (RLCs) were generated using pulse amplitude fluorometry and used to derive photosynthetic yield (ΦPSII), photosynthetic efficiency (α), and the irradiance (Ek) at which relative electron transport rate (rETR) saturates. Surface brine algae from near the surface and bottom‐ice algae were exposed to a range of irradiances from 7 to 262 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1. In surface brine algae, ΦPSII and α remained constant at all irradiances, and rETRmax peaked at 151 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1, indicating these algae are well acclimated to the irradiances to which they are normally exposed. In contrast, ΦPSII, α, and rETRmax in bottom‐ice algae reduced when exposed to irradiances >26 μmol photons · m?2 · s?1, indicating a high degree of shade acclimation. In addition, the previous light history had no significant effect on the photosynthetic capacity of bottom‐ice algae whether cells were gradually exposed to target irradiances over a 12 h period or were exposed immediately (light shocked). These findings indicate that bottom‐ice algae are photoinhibited in a dose‐dependent manner, while surface brine algae tolerate higher irradiances. Our study shows that sea‐ice algae are able to adjust to changes in irradiance rapidly, and this ability to acclimate may facilitate survival and subsequent long‐term acclimation to the postmelt light regime of the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Amaranthus hypochondriacus plants were grown under three photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD). Mature plants grown at full sunlight (38.8 mol m–2 d–1) had higher maximum net photosynthetic rate (PN) and significantly higher leaf trypsin inhibitor activity than plants that developed under lower PPFD (19.4 and 12.8 mol m–2 d–1). In contrast, seeds collected from plants fully exposed to sunlight showed the lowest activity of trypsin inhibitor, higher rate of germination and susceptibility to infection by Aspergillus niger.  相似文献

Past studies of the effects of varying levels of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) on the morphology and physiology of the epiphytic Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant Tillandsia usneoides L. (Bromeliaceae) have resulted in two important findings: (1) CAM, measured as integrated nocturnal CO2 uptake or as nocturnal increases in tissue acidity, saturates at relatively low PPFD, and (2) this plant does not acclimate to different PPFD levels, these findings require substantiation using photosynthetic responses immediately attributable to different PPFD levels, e.g., O2 evolution, as opposed to the delayed, nocturnal responses (CO2 uptake and acid accumulation). In the present study, instantaneous responses of O2 evolution to PPFD level were measured using plants grown eight weeks at three PPFD (20–45, 200–350, and 750–800 mol m-2s-1) in a growth chamber, and using shoots taken from the exposed upper portions (maximum PPFD of 800 mol m-2s-1) and shaded lower portions (maximum PPFD of 140 mol m-2s-1) of plants grown ten years in a greenhouse. In addition, nocturnal increases in acidity were measured in the growth chamber plants. Regardless of the PPFD levels during growth, O2 evolution rates saturated around 500 mol m-2s-1. Furthermore, nocturnal increases in tissue acidity saturated at much lower PPFD. Thus, previous results were confirmed: photosynthesis saturated at low PPFD, and this epiphyte does not acclimate to different levels of PPFD.Abbreviations ANOVA analysis of variance - CAM Crassulacean acid metabolism - DW dry weight - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - SNK Student-Newman-Keuls (to whom all correspondence should be sent-present address and reprint requests);  相似文献

Gas exchange and dry-weight production in Opuntia ficus-indica, a CAM species cultivated worldwide for its fruit and cladodes, were studied in 370 and 750 μmol mol−1 CO2 at three photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD: 5, 13 and 20 mol m−2 d−1). Elevated CO2 and PPFD enhanced the growth of basal cladodes and roots during the 12-week study. A rise in the PPFD increased the growth of daughter cladodes; elevated CO2 enhanced the growth of first-daughter cladodes but decreased the growth of the second-daughter cladodes produced on them. CO2 enrichment enhanced daily net CO2 uptake during the initial 8 weeks after planting for both basal and first-daughter cladodes. Water vapour conductance was 9 to 15% lower in 750 than in 370 μmol mol−1 CO2. Cladode chlorophyll content was lower in elevated CO2 and at higher PPFD. Soluble sugar and starch contents increased with time and were higher in elevated CO2 and at higher PPFD. The total plant nitrogen content was lower in elevated CO2. The effect of elevated CO2 on net CO2 uptake disappeared at 12 weeks after planting, possibly due to acclimation or feedback inhibition, which in turn could reflect decreases in the sink strength of roots. Despite this decreased effect on net CO2 uptake, the total plant dry weight at 12 weeks averaged 32% higher in 750 than in 370 μmol mol−1 CO2. Averaged for the two CO2 treatments, the total plant dry weight increased by 66% from low to medium PPFD and by 37% from medium to high PPFD.  相似文献

Abstract: Parameters associated with the photosynthetic performance of eight common epiphytic ferns in a Mexican cloud forest were investigated in relation to the distribution of these species within the canopy. If the substantial microclimatic gradients within tropical forest canopies provide microhabitats exploited by different epiphytic species, we would expect to find correlations between distribution and physiological traits. Maximum rates of CO2 uptake (Amax) and photon flux densities at light compensation points (LCP) were in the range of shade plants (Amax = 0.6 ‐ 5.2 μmol m‐2 s‐1; LCP = 4 ‐ 6.5 μmol m‐2 s‐1), but saturation light intensities were more typical for sun plants (270 ‐ 550 μmol m‐2 s‐1). Amax and nitrogen content per unit dry weight were correlated with the distribution of the species within the canopy, but LCP, apparent quantum yield and dark respiration were not. When leaves were left to desiccate, the fluorescence yield of dark‐adapted leaves (Y0) remained high until the relative water content (RWC) had dropped below 30 to 20 %. Fluorescence after short illumination with 200 μmol m‐2 s‐1 declined when RWC dropped below 70 to 40 %. After exposure to full sunlight for 1 h, Y0 of species growing in the outer canopy (Pleopeltis mexicana and Polypodium plebeium) and a plant characteristic of the mid‐canopy (Elaphoglossum petiolatum) recovered better than in species from shadier locations (Trichomanes bucinatum, Asplenium cuspidatum, Phlebodium areolatum). With the exception of Ph. areolatum and a species growing at both exposed and shaded sites (Polypodium puberulum), Y0 recovered at least partially after a loss of 80 ‐ 96 % of saturation water, with the humidity‐loving filmy fern (T. bucinatum) showing no signs of permanent damage at all. The results suggest that tolerance or avoidance of desiccation and high light may be at least as important in controlling the distribution of the species studied as photosynthetic performance without stress.  相似文献

1. Excretion of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is a direct and potentially important role for aquatic consumers in nutrient cycling that has recently garnered increased attention. The ecosystem‐level significance of excreted nutrients depends on a suite of abiotic and biotic factors, however, and few studies have coupled measurements of excretion with consideration of its likely importance for whole‐system nutrient fluxes. 2. We measured rates and ratios of N and P excretion by shrimps (Xiphocaris elongata and Atya spp.) in two tropical streams that differed strongly in shrimp biomass because a waterfall excluded predatory fish from one site. We also made measurements of shrimp and basal resource carbon (C), N and P content and estimated shrimp densities and ecosystem‐level N and P excretion and uptake. Finally, we used a 3‐year record of discharge and NH4‐N concentration in the high‐biomass stream to estimate temporal variation in the distance required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool. 3. Per cent C, N, and P body content of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. Only per cent P body content showed significant negative relationships with body mass. C:N of Atya increased significantly with body mass and was higher than that of Xiphocaris. N : P of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. 4. Excretion rates ranged from 0.16–3.80 μmol NH4‐N shrimp?1 h?1, 0.23–5.76 μmol total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) shrimp?1 h?1 and 0.002–0.186 μmol total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) shrimp?1 h?1. Body size was generally a strong predictor of excretion rates in both taxa, differing between Xiphocaris and Atya for TDP but not NH4‐N and TDN. Excretion rates showed statistically significant but weak relationships with body content stoichiometry. 5. Large between‐stream differences in shrimp biomass drove differences in total excretion by the two shrimp communities (22.3 versus 0.20 μmol NH4‐N m?2 h?1, 37.5 versus 0.26 μmol TDN m?2 h?1 and 1.1 versus 0.015 μmol TDP m?2 h?1), equivalent to 21% and 0.5% of NH4‐N uptake and 5% and <0.1% of P uptake measured in the high‐ and low‐biomass stream, respectively. Distances required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool varied more than a hundredfold over the 3‐year record in the high‐shrimp stream, driven by variability in discharge and NH4‐N concentration. 6. Our results underscore the importance of both biotic and abiotic factors in controlling consumer excretion and its significance for nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Differences in community‐level excretion rates were related to spatial patterns in shrimp biomass dictated by geomorphology and the presence of predators. Abiotic factors also had important effects through temporal patterns in discharge and nutrient concentrations. Future excretion studies that focus on nutrient cycling should consider both biotic and abiotic factors in assessing the significance of consumer excretion in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha H. Wendl) is one of the most easily and commonly tissue-cultured ornamental plants. Despite this, there are limited reports on photosynthetic capacity and its impact on the plant quality during acclimatization. Various growth, photosynthetic and biochemical parameters and activities of antioxidant enzymes and dehydrins of micropropagated plants were assessed under three light intensities (35, 70, and 100 µmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetic photon flux density – PPFD). Fresh and dry plant biomass, plant height, and leaf area were optimal with high irradiance (70–100 µmol m?2 s?1 PPFD). Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents and net photosynthesis were optimal in plants grown under 70 µmol m?2 s?1 PPFD. Stomatal resistance, malondialdehyde content, and Fv/Fm values were highest at low light irradiance (35 µmol m?2 s?1 PPFD). The activities of three antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, increased as light irradiance increased, signaling that high light irradiance was an abiotic stress. The accumulation of 55, 33, and 25 kDa dehydrins was observed with all light treatments although the expression levels were highest at 35 µmol m?2 s?1 PPFD. Irradiance at 70 µmol m?2 s?1 PPFD was suitable for the acclimatization of African violet plants. Both low and high irradiance levels (35 and 100 µmol m?2 s?1 PPFD) induced the accumulation of antioxidants and dehydrins in plants which reveals enhanced stress levels and measures to counter it.  相似文献
