The growing potential of biomedical technologies has increasingly been associated with discussions surrounding the ethical aspects of the new technologies in different societies. Advances in genetics, stem cell research and organ transplantation are some of the medical issues that have raised important ethical and social issues. Special attention has been paid towards moral ethics in Islam and medical and religious professions in Iran have voiced the requirement for an emphasis on ethics. In the last decade, great strides have been made in biomedical ethics, especially in the field of education, research and legislation. In this article, contemporary medical ethics in Iran, and the related moral philosophy, have been reviewed in brief and we have discussed some of the activities in the field of medical ethics that have been carried out in our country within recent years. These activities have included the establishment of the National and Regional Committees for Medical Research Ethics and the production of national codes of ethics in biomedical research in the 1990s and the introduction of a comprehensive strategic plan for medical ethics at the national level in 2002. This paper will discuss these issues, along with the production, in 2005, of the Specific National Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research.  相似文献

Raman spectroscopy in chemical bioanalysis   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Advances in instrumentation are making Raman spectroscopy the tool of choice for an increasing number of (bio)chemical applications. Raman is an interesting option for several reasons, including the sensitivity to small structural changes, non-invasive sampling capability, minimal sample preparation, and high spatial resolution in the case of Raman micro-spectroscopy. Herein we discuss the most recent technical approaches employed, from the well-known surface enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy to non-linear Raman techniques such as coherent anti-stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) and related techniques. Relevant applications of Raman spectroscopy in the fields of clinical pathology, in vivo and ex vivo imaging, classification and detection of microorganisms and chemical analysis in the past three years are also included.  相似文献

With an advancement in biomedical applications, many images are communicated over the public networks. Therefore, these medical images are prone to various security threats. Development of end to end secure communication protocol for these medical images is found to be a challenging task. Therefore, many researchers have proposed various image medica image encryption techniques to provide end to end security of medical images. However, the existing approaches of block-based recovery of the secret through progressive sharing paradigm have support for limited threshold value of the chosen blocks out of the total number of the blocks during the communication of the image. Most of the suggested scheme has fixed threshold value for the blocks during recovery of secret; works good for a limited threshold (k) value out of number of blocks (n) in which secret has been divided for security. A novel threshold based (any value of k and n) blockwide recovery of secret in progressive secret sharing has been introduced and analyzed for distributed environment. The proposed threshold block wise splitting using progressive visual secret sharing (T-BPVSS) achieves any general higher value of threshold for recovery of secret medical images. Proposed scheme is tested based on various parameters such as varying values of threshold for recovery of secret during enhanced security scenario, as well as changing dimensions of the images and introducing noise in the images. A detailed distributed computing recovery solution is also suggested for the original secret by using distribution technique of shares across the networks of computers. The scheme satisfies for perfect security condition in distributed environment using at least minimum decided threshold numbers of participants (k) before revealing any of the blocks of secret medical image.  相似文献

Digital microfluidics (DMF) has emerged as a promising liquid handling technology for a variety of applications, demonstrating great potential both in terms of miniaturization and automation. DMF is based on the manipulation of discrete, independently controllable liquid droplets, which makes it highly reconfigurable and reprogrammable. One of its most exclusive advantages, compared to microchannel-based microfluidics, is its ability to precisely handle solid nano- and microsized objects, such as magnetic particles. Magnetic particles have become very popular in the last decade, since their high surface-to-volume ratio and the possibility to magnetically separate them from the matrix make them perfect suitable as a solid support for bio-assay development. The potential of magnetic particles in DMF-based bio-assays has been demonstrated for various applications. In this review we discuss the latest developments of magnetic particle-based DMF bio-assays with the aim to present, identify and analyze the trends in the field. We also discuss the state-of-the art of device integration, current status of commercialization and issues that still need to be addressed. With this paper we intend to stimulate researchers to exploit and unveil the potential of these exciting tools, which will shape the future of modern biochemistry, microbiology and biomedical diagnostics.  相似文献

This mini-review has investigated the recent progress regarding gold nanostructures capacities of energy absorption for thermal therapy applications. Unselective thermal therapy of malignant and normal tissues could lead to irreversible damage to healthy tissues without effective treatment on target malignant tissues. In recent years, there has been a considerable progress in the field of cancer thermal therapy for treating target malignant tissues using nanostructures. Due to the remarkable physical properties of the gold nanoparticle, it has been considered as an exceptional element for thermal therapy techniques. Different types of gold nanoparticles have been used as energy absorbent for thermal therapy applications under several types of energy exposures. Electromagnetic, ultrasound, electric and magnetic field are examples for these energy sources. Well-known plasmonic photothermal therapy which applies electromagnetic radiation is under clinical investigation for the treatment of various medical conditions. However, there are many other techniques in this regard which should be explored.  相似文献

Recent applications of starch derivatives in nanodrug delivery   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Starch has found use in industries as diverse as food, textiles, cosmetics, plastics, adhesives, paper, and pharmaceuticals. From a pharmaceutical standpoint, starch finds its value in solid-oral dosage forms, where it has been used as a binder, diluent, and disintegrant. However, only recently has the use of starch in nanotechnology started to make significant advances in biomedical applications, including newer drug delivery techniques. There has been a considerable effort to develop biodegradable nanoparticles as effective drug delivery systems. Being cheap, non-toxic, renewable, biodegradable and compatible with many other materials for industrial applications, starch is attracting the interest of drug delivery scientists. We have put together in a short and concise format, recent applications of starch derivatives in the emerging field of nanodrug delivery with the conclusion that a lot still needs to be done.  相似文献

The Amendments to the National Cancer Act of 1974 included a provision for a comprehensive review of the Federal policies and programs for medical research. This would appear to be a particularly timely review since many of the fundamental issues concerning the Government's role in biomedical research are presently in question. These issues include the rationale for public support for basic medical research, public expectations for returns on these investments, establishment of priorities among various research avenues, and a number of derivative as well as ethical questions. Since the professional and scientific communities have been historically successful in gaining public funds for research, a periodic opportunity for public review and consideration would appear to be highly desirable.  相似文献

Ocean acidification poses a serious threat to marine calcifying organisms, yet experimental and field studies have found highly diverse responses among species and environments. Our understanding of the underlying drivers of differential responses to ocean acidification is currently limited by difficulties in directly observing and quantifying the mechanisms of bio‐calcification. Here, we present Raman spectroscopy techniques for characterizing the skeletal mineralogy and calcifying fluid chemistry of marine calcifying organisms such as corals, coralline algae, foraminifera, and fish (carbonate otoliths). First, our in vivo Raman technique is the ideal tool for investigating non‐classical mineralization pathways. This includes calcification by amorphous particle attachment, which has recently been controversially suggested as a mechanism by which corals resist the negative effects of ocean acidification. Second, high‐resolution ex vivo Raman mapping reveals complex banding structures in the mineralogy of marine calcifiers, and provides a tool to quantify calcification responses to environmental variability on various timescales from days to years. We describe the new insights into marine bio‐calcification that our techniques have already uncovered, and we consider the wide range of questions regarding calcifier responses to global change that can now be proposed and addressed with these new Raman spectroscopy tools.  相似文献

Advances in biological and medical technologies have been providing us explosive volumes of biological and physiological data, such as medical images, electroencephalography, genomic and protein sequences. Learning from these data facilitates the understanding of human health and disease. Developed from artificial neural networks, deep learning-based algorithms show great promise in extracting features and learning patterns from complex data. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of deep learning techniques and some of the state-of-the-art applications in the biomedical field. We first introduce the development of artificial neural network and deep learning. We then describe two main components of deep learning, i.e., deep learning architectures and model optimization. Subsequently, some examples are demonstrated for deep learning applications, including medical image classification, genomic sequence analysis, as well as protein structure classification and prediction. Finally, we offer our perspectives for the future directions in the field of deep learning.  相似文献

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has received substantial interest owing to its unique structural features and impressive physico-mechanical properties. BC has a variety of applications in biomedical fields, including use as biomaterial for artificial skin, artificial blood vessels, vascular grafts, scaffolds for tissue engineering, and wound dressing. However, pristine BC lacks certain properties, which limits its applications in various fields; therefore, synthesis of BC composites has been conducted to address these limitations. A variety of BC composite synthetic strategies have been developed based on the nature and relevant applications of the combined materials. BC composites are primarily synthesized through in situ addition of reinforcement materials to BC synthetic media or the ex situ penetration of such materials into BC microfibrils. Polymer blending and solution mixing are less frequently used synthetic approaches. BC composites have been synthesized using numerous materials ranging from organic polymers to inorganic nanoparticles. In medical fields, these composites are used for tissue regeneration, healing of deep wounds, enzyme immobilization, and synthesis of medical devices that could replace cardiovascular and other connective tissues. Various electrical products, including biosensors, biocatalysts, E-papers, display devices, electrical instruments, and optoelectronic devices, are prepared from BC composites with conductive materials. In this review, we compiled various synthetic approaches for BC composite synthesis, classes of BC composites, and applications of BC composites. This study will increase interest in BC composites and the development of new ideas in this field.  相似文献

Magnetically-responsive nano/micro-engineered biomaterials that enable a tightly controlled, on-demand drug delivery have been developed as new types of smart soft devices for biomedical applications. Although a number of magnetically-responsive drug delivery systems have demonstrated efficacies through either in vitro proof of concept studies or in vivo preclinical applications, their use in clinical settings is still limited by their insufficient biocompatibility or biodegradability. Additionally, many of the existing platforms rely on sophisticated techniques for their fabrications. We recently demonstrated the fabrication of biodegradable, gelatin-based thermo-responsive microgel by physically entrapping poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) chains as a minor component within a three-dimensional gelatin network. In this study, we present a facile method to fabricate a biodegradable drug release platform that enables a magneto-thermally triggered drug release. This was achieved by incorporating superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and thermo-responsive polymers within gelatin-based colloidal microgels, in conjunction with an alternating magnetic field application system.  相似文献

Rapid prototyping (RP), also known as additive manufacturing (AM), has been well received and adopted in the biomedical field. The capacity of this family of techniques to fabricate customized 3D structures with complex geometries and excellent reproducibility has revolutionized implantology and regenerative medicine. In particular, nozzle-based systems allow the fabrication of high-resolution polylactic acid (PLA) structures that are of interest in regenerative medicine. These 3D structures find interesting applications in the regenerative medicine field where promising applications including biodegradable templates for tissue regeneration purposes, 3D in vitro platforms for studying cell response to different scaffolds conditions and for drug screening are considered among others. Scaffolds functionality depends not only on the fabrication technique, but also on the material used to build the 3D structure, the geometry and inner architecture of the structure, and the final surface properties. All being crucial parameters affecting scaffolds success. This Commentary emphasizes the importance of these parameters in scaffolds’ fabrication and also draws the attention toward the versatility of these PLA scaffolds as a potential tool in regenerative medicine and other medical fields.  相似文献

Among a plethora of nano-sized therapeutics, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been some of the most investigated novel materials for, predominantly, cancer drug delivery applications. Due to their large drug uptake capacities and slow-release mechanisms, MOFs are desirable drug delivery vehicles that protect and transport sensitive drug molecules to target sites. The inclusion of other guest materials into MOFs to make MOF-composite materials has added further functionality, from externally triggered drug release to improved pharmacokinetics and diagnostic aids. MOF-composites are synthetically versatile and can include examples such as magnetic nanoparticles in MOFs for MRI image contrast and polymer coatings that improve the blood-circulation time. From synthesis to applications, this review will consider the main developments in MOF-composite chemistry for biomedical applications and demonstrate the potential of these novel agents in nanomedicine. It is concluded that, although vast synthetic progress has been made in the field, it requires now to develop more biomedical expertise with a focus on rational model selection, a major comparative toxicity study, and advanced targeting techniques.  相似文献

This review presents an introduction to Raman scattering and describes the various Raman spectroscopy, Raman microscopy, and chemical imaging techniques that have demonstrated utility in biocolloidal self-assemblies, pharmaceutical drug delivery systems, and pulmonary research applications. Recent Raman applications to pharmaceutical aerosols in the context of pulmonary inhalation aerosol delivery are discussed. The "molecular fingerprint" insight that Raman applications provide includes molecular structure, drug-carrier/excipient interactions, intramolecular and intermolecular bonding, surface structure, surface and interfacial interactions, and the functional groups involved therein. The molecular, surface, and interfacial properties that Raman characterization can provide are particularly important in respirable pharmaceutical powders, as these particles possess a higher surface-area-to-volume ratio; hence, understanding the nature of these solid surfaces can enable their manipulation and tailoring for functionality at the nanometer level for targeted pulmonary delivery and deposition. Moreover, Raman mapping of aerosols at the micro- and nanometer level of resolution is achievable with new, sophisticated, commercially available Raman microspectroscopy techniques. This noninvasive, highly versatile analytical and imaging technique exhibits vast potential for in vitro and in vivo molecular investigations of pulmonary aerosol delivery, lung deposition, and pulmonary cellular drug uptake and disposition in unfixed living pulmonary cells.  相似文献

OUTLINING ETHICAL ISSUES IN NANOTECHNOLOGIES   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Nanotechnologies are an expression of the human ability to control and manipulate matter on a very small scale. Their use will enable an even and constant monitoring of human organisms, in a new and perhaps less invasive way. Debates at all levels – national, European and international – have pointed out the common difficulty of giving a complete, clear definition of nanotechnologies. This is primarily due to the variety of their components, to the fact that there is not just one technology but several.
The most significant medical applications of nanotechnologies are in the diagnostic and the therapeutic fields, eg biosensors and molecular imaging, providing diagnosis and drug delivery with no invasive methods involved.
Like any other emerging field, such technologies imply new possibilities for improving health but, on the other hand, they are still at an experimental stage and therefore should be implemented under rigorous safety testing before going on general release. For this purpose, the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of nanotechnologies have been elaborated by study groups, in order to develop solutions before the results of the tests are diffused into medical practice.
The aim of this paper is to define some of the ethical issues concerning biomedical applications and to evaluate whether there is a need for new or additional guidelines and regulations.  相似文献
