To understand the role of sea temperature on the population biology of the crown-of-thorns sea star Acanthaster planci, the thermal window for embryonic and larval development was investigated. In two experiments, the response of embryos and larvae across 12 temperatures from 19.4 to 36.5 °C was quantified as the percentage of individuals reaching cleavage stage embryos, blastula, gastrula, early-bipinnaria, late-bipinnaria larvae or abnormal. Measurements were made at 7 times up to 72 h post-fertilisation, with the morphometrics of larvae measured in the 72-h sample. Acanthaster planci developed at temperatures between 19.4 and 33.2 °C, with a thermal window for development to the late-bipinnaria stage between 25.6 and 31.6 °C. Development rate, normal development and larval size were optimal at 28.7 °C, with development rates remaining relatively constant up to 31.6 °C. Rates of abnormality increased steadily (early embryonic stages) above 28.7 °C and was 100 % at temperatures approaching 33 °C. These experiments provide a more detailed insight into the response of A. planci developmental stages to temperature. The present day distribution of the species in eastern Australia overlap with the optimal thermal window for development to the late-bipinnaria stage (≈25–32 °C), implying a role of temperature in controlling population distributions and abundances. Despite this, short- or long-term temperature increases may not be a major modulator of the crown-of-thorns recruitment success, population dynamics and distribution in the future as no significant change in development rates, larval survival and growth occurred within this thermal window. Therefore, moderate (1–2 °C) increases in sea temperatures caused by El Niño or near-future ocean warming may not drive an increase in developmental and settlement success. Indeed, without any acclimation to warmer temperatures expected under near-future warming (+2 to 4 °C), climate change could ultimately reduce larval survival due to elevated mortality above the optimal development temperature.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that development of the Antarctic urchin Sterechinus neumayeri under future ocean conditions of warming and acidification would incur physiological costs, reducing the tolerance of a secondary stressor. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) quantify current austral spring temperature and pH near sea urchin habitat at Cape Evans in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica and (2) spawn S. neumayeri in the laboratory and raise early developmental stages (EDSs) under ambient (?0.7 °C; 400 µatm pCO2) and future (+2.6 °C; 650 and 1,000 µatm pCO2) ocean conditions and expose four EDSs (blastula, gastrula, prism, and 4-arm echinopluteus) to a one hour acute heat stress and assess survivorship. Results of field data from 2011 to 2012 show extremely stable inter-annual pH conditions ranging from 7.99 to 8.08, suggesting that future ocean acidification will drastically alter the pH-seascape for S. neumayeri. In the laboratory, S. neumayeri EDSs appear to be tolerant of temperatures and pCO2 levels above their current habitat conditions. EDSs survived acute heat exposures >20 °C above habitat temperatures of ?1.9 °C. No pCO2 effect was observed for EDSs reared at ?0.7 °C. When reared at +2.6 °C, small but significant pCO2 effects were observed at the blastula and prism stage, suggesting that multiple stressors are more detrimental than single stressors. While surprisingly tolerant overall, blastulae were the most sensitive stage to ocean warming and acidification. We conclude that S. neumayeri may be unexpectedly physiologically tolerant of future ocean conditions.  相似文献

Jatropha curcas L. is a sustainable energy plant with great potential for biodiesel production, and low temperature is an important limiting factor for its distribution and production. In this present work, chill hardening-induced chilling tolerance and involvement of antioxidant defense system were investigated in J. curcas seedlings. The results showed that chill hardening at 10 or 12 °C for 1 and 2 days greatly lowered death rate and alleviated electrolyte leakage as well as accumulation of the lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) of J. curcas seedlings under severe chilling stress at 1 °C for 1–7 days, indicating that the chill hardening significantly improved chilling tolerance of J. curcas seedlings. Measurement of activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and glutathione reductase (GR), and the levels of the antioxidants ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) showed the chill hardening at 12 °C for 2 days could obviously increase the activities of these antioxidant enzymes and AsA and GSH contents in the hardened seedlings. When the hardened and non-hardening (control) seedlings were subjected to severe chilling stress at 1 °C for 1–7 days, the chill-hardened seedlings generally maintained significantly higher activities of the antioxidant enzymes SOD, APX, CAT, POD, and GR, and content of the antioxidants AsA and GSH as well as ratio of the reduced antioxidants to total antioxidants [AsA/(AsA + DHA) and GSH/(GSH + GSSG)], when compared with the control without chill hardening. All above-mentioned results indicated that the chill hardening could enhance the chilling tolerance, and the antioxidant defense system plays an important role in the chill hardening-induced chilling tolerance in J. curcas seedlings.  相似文献

Tropical species are predicted to have limited capacity for acclimation to global warming. This study investigated the potential for developmental thermal acclimation by the tropical damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis to ocean temperatures predicted to occur over the next 50–100 years. Newly settled juveniles were reared for 4 months in four temperature treatments, consisting of the current-day summer average (28.5 °C) and up to 3 °C above the average (29.5, 30.5 and 31.5 °C). Resting metabolic rate (RMR) of fish reared at 29.5 and 31.5 °C was significantly higher than the control group reared at 28.5 °C. In contrast, RMR of fish reared at 30.5 °C was not significantly different from the control group, indicating these fish had acclimated to their rearing temperature. Furthermore, fish that developed in 30.5 and 31.5 °C exhibited an enhanced ability to deal with acute temperature increases. These findings illustrate that developmental acclimation may help coral reef fish cope with warming ocean temperatures.  相似文献

Oceans are experiencing increasing acidification in parallel to a distinct warming trend in consequence of ongoing climate change. Rising seawater temperatures are mediating a northward shift in distribution of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), into the habitat of polar cod (Boreogadus saida), that is associated with retreating cold water masses. This study investigates the competitive strength of the co-occurring gadoids under ocean acidification and warming (OAW) scenarios. Therefore, we incubated specimens of both species in individual tanks for 4 months, under different control and projected temperatures (polar cod: 0, 3, 6, 8 °C, Atlantic cod: 3, 8, 12, 16 °C) and PCO2 conditions (390 and 1170 µatm) and monitored growth, feed consumption and standard metabolic rate. Our results revealed distinct temperature effects on both species. While hypercapnia by itself had no effect, combined drivers caused nonsignificant trends. The feed conversion efficiency of normocapnic polar cod was highest at 0 °C, while optimum growth performance was attained at 6 °C; the long-term upper thermal tolerance limit was reached at 8 °C. OAW caused only slight impairments in growth performance. Under normocapnic conditions, Atlantic cod consumed progressively increasing amounts of feed than individuals under hypercapnia despite maintaining similar growth rates during warming. The low feed conversion efficiency at 3 °C may relate to the lower thermal limit of Atlantic cod. In conclusion, Atlantic cod displayed increased performance in the warming Arctic such that the competitive strength of polar cod is expected to decrease under future OAW conditions.  相似文献

In the eastern United States, winter temperature has been increasing nearly twice as fast as summer temperature, but studies of warming effects on plants have focused on species that are photosynthetically active in summer. The terrestrial orchid Tipularia discolor is leafless in summer and acquires C primarily in winter. The optimum temperature for photosynthesis in T. discolor is higher than the maximum temperature throughout most of its growing season, and therefore growth can be expected to increase with warming. Contrary to this hypothesis, experimental warming negatively affected reproductive fitness (number of flowering stalks, flowers, fruits) and growth (change in leaf area from 2010 to 2012) in T. discolor. Temperature in June–July was critical for flowering, and mean July temperature greater than 29 °C (i.e., 2.5 °C above ambient) eliminated reproduction. Warming of 1.2 °C delayed flowering by an average of 10 days and fruiting by an average of 5 days. Warming of 4.4 °C reduced relative growth rates by about 60 %, which may have been partially caused by the direct effects of temperature on photosynthesis and respiration. Warming indirectly increased vapor pressure deficit (VPD) by 0.2–0.5 kPa, and leaf-to-air VPD over 1.3 kPa restricted stomatal conductance of T. discolor to 10–40 % of maximum conductance. These results highlight the need to account for changes in VPD when estimating temperature responses of plant species under future warming scenarios. Increasing temperature in the future will likely be an important limiting factor to the distribution of T. discolor, especially along the southern edge of its range.  相似文献

Population outbreaks of the corallivorous crown-of-thorns starfish, Acanthaster planci, are a major contributor to the decline in coral reef across the Indo-Pacific. The success of A. planci and other reef species in a changing ocean will be influenced by juvenile performance because the naturally high mortality experienced at this sensitive life history stage maybe exacerbated by ocean warming and acidification. We investigated the effects of increased temperature and acidification on growth of newly metamorphosed juvenile A. planci and their feeding rates on crustose coralline algae (CCA) during the initial herbivorous phase of their life history. The juveniles were exposed to three temperature (26, 28, 30 °C) and three pH (NIST scale: 8.1, 7.8, 7.6) levels in a flow-through cross-factorial experiment. There were positive but independent effects of warming and acidification on juvenile growth and feeding. Early juveniles were highly tolerant to moderate increases in temperature (+2 °C above ambient) with the highest growth at 30 °C. Growth and feeding rates of A. planci on CCA were highest at pH 7.6. Thus, ocean warming and acidification may enhance the success of A. planci juveniles. In contrast to its coral prey, at this vulnerable developmental stage, A. planci appears to be highly resilient to future ocean change. Success of juveniles in a future ocean may have carry-over effects into the coral-eating life stage, increasing the threat to coral reef systems.  相似文献

With ocean warming predicted globally, one of the mechanisms driving distributional shifts and changes in the abundance of resident fishes is reproductive output. The relationship between sea surface temperature and the reproductive activity of a eurythermic, resident coastal species, blacktail seabream Diplodus sargus capensis, was examined in the “ocean warming” hotspot of the northern Benguela. Reproductive activity was found to be restricted to periods when the water temperature dropped below 20 °C. A metadata analysis conducted on the D. sargus sub-species complex similarly showed that reproductive activity was restricted to temperatures between 15 and 20 °C, regardless of the range in ambient water temperature. Based on these findings and using satellite derived SST information, we examined D. s. capensis’s total and seasonal “reproductive scope” that is defined as either the area suitable for spawning each year or the duration of its potential spawning season at a fixed geographical locality, respectively. Trends were examined over the last three decades. Reproductive scope by area was found to be shrinking at a rate of 7 % per decade in southern Angola and expanding at a rate of 6 % per decade in northern Namibia. Reproductive scope by season decreased by 1.05 months per decade in Namibe, southern Angola and increased by 0.76 months per decade in Hentiesbaai, northern Namibia. Changes in reproductive scope may be a driving mechanism of distributional shifts in resident fishes, although the rate of the shifts is likely to be slow. More importantly, changes in reproductive scope will not be uniform throughout fish distributions and will most likely result in heterogeneous variations in fish abundance.  相似文献

Approximately 75% or more of the L2 and L3 juvenile stages of the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae survived freezing and thawing without loss of fertility. Optimum survival depended upon a combination of conditions: (1) pretreatment with 5% DMSO at 0 °C for 10 min, (2) 0.2 °C per minute cooling rate from 0 to ?100 °C prior to immersion into liquid nitrogen, and (3) a 27.6 °C per minute warming rate from ?196 °C to ?10 °C. Storage at ?196 °C for more than 100 days was without effect on viability or fertility. Some of the L4 (about 50%) and adult (about 3%) stages survive the routine freeze-thaw treatment. However, there was no recovery of either embryonic stages or embryonated eggs from ?196 °C under these standard conditions. Either very fast cooling (about 545 °C/min) or fast warming (about 858 °C/min) rates diminished survival of the L2 and L3 stages drastically.Scanning electron microscopy revealed that freeze-thaw survivors with aberrant swimming behavior had cuticular defects. In juvenile forms, the altered swimming motion was lost after a molt whereas as abnormal adults grew, sinusoidal movement resumed. In the L4 and adult forms the cuticular abnormalities lowered viability and fertility. It is concluded that survival of nematodes from a freeze-thaw cycle is contingent upon establishing specific cryobiological conditions by varying aspects of the procedure that gave high recoveries of L2 and L3 stages.  相似文献

Background

Exposure to future ocean acidification scenarios may alter the behaviour of marine teleosts through interference with neuroreceptor functioning. So far, most studies investigated effects of ocean acidification on the behaviour of fish, either isolated or in combination with environmental temperature. However, only few physiological studies on this issue were conducted despite the putative neurophysiological origin of the CO2-induced behavioural changes. Here, we present the metabolic consequences of long-term exposure to projected ocean acidification (396–548 μatm PCO2 under control and 915–1272 μatm under treatment conditions) and parallel warming in the brain of two related fish species, polar cod (Boreogadus saida, exposed to 0 °C, 3 °C, 6 °C and 8 °C) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua, exposed to 3 °C, 8 °C, 12 °C and 16 °C). It has been shown that B. saida is behaviourally vulnerable to future ocean acidification scenarios, while G. morhua demonstrates behavioural resilience.

Results

We found that temperature alters brain osmolyte, amino acid, choline and neurotransmitter concentrations in both species indicating thermal responses particularly in osmoregulation and membrane structure. In B. saida, changes in amino acid and osmolyte metabolism at the highest temperature tested were also affected by CO2, possibly emphasizing energetic limitations. We did not observe changes in neurotransmitters, energy metabolites, membrane components or osmolytes that might serve as a compensatory mechanism against CO2 induced behavioural impairments. In contrast to B. saida, such temperature limitation was not detected in G. morhua; however, at 8 °C, CO2 induced an increase in the levels of metabolites of the glutamate/GABA-glutamine cycle potentially indicating greater GABAergic activity in G.morhua. Further, increased availability of energy-rich substrates was detected under these conditions.

Conclusions

Our results indicate a change of GABAergic metabolism in the nervous system of Gadus morhua close to the optimum of the temperature range. Since a former study showed that juvenile G. morhua might be slightly more behaviourally resilient to CO2 at this respective temperature, we conclude that the observed change of GABAergic metabolism could be involved in counteracting OA induced behavioural changes. This may serve as a fitness advantage of this respective species compared to B. saida in a future warmer, more acidified polar ocean.

The effects of concurrent ocean warming and acidification on Antarctic marine benthos warrant investigation as little is known about potential synergies between these climate change stressors. We examined the interactive effects of warming and acidification on fertilization and embryonic development of the ecologically important sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri reared from fertilization in elevated temperature (+1.5°C and 3°C) and decreased pH (?0.3 and ?0.5 pH units) treatments. Fertilization using gametes from multiple males and females, to represent populations of spawners, was resilient to acidification at ambient temperature (0°C). At elevated temperatures, there was a negative interactive effect of temperature and pH on percentage of fertilization (11% reduction at 3°C). For cleavage stage embryos, there was a significant, but small reduction (6%) in the percentage of normal embryos at pH 7.5. For blastulae, a 10–11% decrease in normal development occurred in the +3°C treatments across all pH levels. Our results highlight the importance of considering the impacts of both temperature and pH in assessing the life history response of S. neumayeri in a changing polar ocean. While fertilization and development to the blastula stage were robust to levels of temperature and pH change predicted over coming decades, deleterious interactive effects were evident between these stressors at levels projected to occur by 2100 and beyond.  相似文献

Global warming was believed to accelerate the expansion of cyanobacterial blooms. However, the impact of changes due to the allelopathic effects of cyanobacterial blooms with or without algal toxin production on the ecophysiology of its coexisting phytoplankton species arising from global warming were unknown until recently. In this study, the allelopathic effects of toxic and non-toxic Microcystis aeruginosa strains on the growth of green alga Chlorella vulgaris and photosynthesis of the co-cultivations of C. vulgaris and toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-905 or non-toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-469 were investigated at different temperatures. The growth of C. vulgaris, co-cultured with the toxic or non-toxic M. aeruginosa strains, was promoted at 20 °C but inhibited at temperatures ≥25 °C. The inhibitory effects of the toxic and non-toxic M. aeruginosa strains on of the co-cultivations (C. vulgaris and non-toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-469 or toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-905) also linearly increased with elevated temperatures. Furthermore, toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-905 induced more inhibition toward growth of C. vulgaris or Pmax and Rd of the mixtures than non-toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-469. C. vulgaris dominated over non-toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-469 but toxic M. aeruginosa FACHB-905 overcame C. vulgaris when they were co-cultured in mesocosms in water temperatures from 20 to 25 °C. The results indicate that allelopathic effects of M. aeruginosa strains on C. vulgaris are both temperature- and species-dependent: it was stimulative for C. vulgaris at low temperatures such as 20 °C, but inhibitory at high temperatures (≥25 °C); the toxic strain was determined to be more harmful to C. vulgaris than the non-toxic one. This suggests that global warming may aggravate the ecological risk of cyanobacteria blooms, especially those with toxic species as the main contributors.  相似文献

The global temperature increase has significant implications on the survival of microalgae which form the basis of all aquatic food webs. The aim of this study was to compare the response of similar taxa of microalgae from the Antarctic (Chlamydomonas UMACC 229, Chlorella UMACC 237, and Navicula glaciei UMACC 231), temperate (Chlamydomonas augustae UMACC 247, Chlorella vulgaris UMACC 248, and Navicula incerta UMACC 249), and tropical (C. augustae UMACC 246, C. vulgaris UMACC 001, and Amphiprora UMACC 239) regions to changing temperature. The Antarctic, temperate, and tropical strains were grown over specific temperature ranges of 4 °C to 30 °C, 4 °C to 32 °C, and 13 °C to 38 °C, respectively. The three Antarctic strains survived at temperatures much higher than their ambient regime. In comparison, the tropical strains are already growing at their upper temperature limits. The three Chlorella strains from different regions are eurythermal, with a large overlap on tolerance ranging from 4 °C to 38 °C. The specific growth rate (μ) of the Antarctic Navicula decreased (<0.34 day?1) at temperatures above 4 °C, showing it to be sensitive to temperature increase. If further warming of Earth occurs, N. glaciei UMACC 231 is likely to have the most deleterious consequences than the other two Antarctic microalgae studied. The percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) decreased with increasing temperature in the Antarctic Navicula. As temperature increases, the growth and nutritional value of this commonly occurring diatom in the Antarctic may decrease, with consequences for the aquatic food web. Of the three Chlamydomonas strains, only the Antarctic strain produced predominantly PUFA, especially 16:3 (48.4–57.2 % total fatty acids).  相似文献

Life table and predation of the predatory mite Neoseiulus longispinosus (Evans) on the red spider mite (RSM), Oligonychus coffeae (Nietner), a major pest of tea in India, were studied in the laboratory. Developmental time from egg to adult varied from 4 to 14 days at 30 to 15 °C, respectively; at 35 °C no larva survived. Survival of immature stages was more than 94 % at all temperatures. Threshold temperature for development of immature stages of females and males was 10 and 9.9 °C, respectively, and thermal constant was 84.03 degree-days for females and 80 for males. Sex ratio was female biased and temperature (20–30 °C) had no clear effect on sex determination. Egg hatchability was 73 % at 35 °C and >97 % at lower temperatures. Average number of eggs laid per female/day was higher at 30 °C than at 20 or 25 °C. The highest net reproductive rate (R 0) was 40.7, at 20 °C. Mean generation time (T) decreased from 28 to 13 days with temperature increasing from 20 to 30 °C. Weekly multiplication (6.5) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m ) (0.268) were highest at 30 °C. Males lived longer than females at every temperature tested. Longevity was highest at 20 °C (50 days for females and 55 for males). Survival and longevity were adversely affected by temperature above 30 °C. Daily consumption of prey increased with the advancement of predator’s life stages; adult females consumed the highest numbers of prey items, preferably larvae and nymphs.  相似文献

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of temperature on morphometric features of the egg during the embryonic development of the prawn Macrobrachium americanum and the relationship with hatching and the survival of the larvae. Berried females were grouped (n = 3) and reared at three different temperatures, 26, 29, and 33 °C, for which seven developmental stages were recognized. At each stage, the apical and sagittal diameters of the eggs were measured, the volume was calculated, and the weights were recorded. Additionally, the duration of embryonic development, hatching percentage, and larval survival were determined. At 29 and 33 °C, the eggs’ volume increased by 50%, but at 26 °C, the increase was 25%. Larvae from eggs incubated at 33 °C died one day after hatching. At 29 °C, larvae survived until Zoea VII. Larvae from eggs incubated at 26 °C died at the end of Zoea I. The number of days of embryonic development was 20.5 ± 1.5 (26 °C), 15 ± 1 (29 °C), and 12 ± 1 (33 °C). A temperature of 29 °C was the most favorable for embryonic development in M. americanum.  相似文献

Environmental conditions play a major role in shaping reptilian embryonic development, but studies addressing the impact of interactions between chronic and acute environmental stressors on embryonic systems are lacking. In the present study, we investigated thermal dependence of cholinergic and adrenergic cardiovascular tone in embryonic American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) and assessed possible phenotypic plasticity in a chronic hypoxic incubation treatment. We compared changes in heart rate (f H) and mean arterial blood pressure (P M) for chronically hypoxic and normoxic-incubated embryos after cholinergic and adrenergic blockade following three different acute temperature treatments: (1) 30 °C (control incubation temperature), (2) acute, progressive decrease 30–24 °C then held at 24 °C, and (3) acute, progressive increase 30–36 °C then held at 36 °C. f H progressively fell in response to decreasing temperature and rose in response to increasing temperature. P M did not significantly change with decreasing temperature, but was lowered significantly with increasing acute temperature in the normoxic group at 90 % of development only. Propranolol administration (β adrenergic antagonist) produced a significant f H decrease at 24, 30, and 36 °C that was similar at all temperatures for all groups. For normoxic-incubated embryos at 90 % of development, atropine administration (cholinergic antagonist) significantly increased f H in both 24 and 36 °C treatments, but not in the 30 °C control treatment. This atropine response at 24 and 36 °C demonstrated acute thermally dependent cholinergic tone on f H late in development for normoxic-incubated, but not chronically hypoxic-incubated embryos. Collectively, data indicated that cardiovascular control mechanisms in embryonic alligators may be activated by thermal extremes, and the maturation of control mechanisms was delayed by chronic hypoxia.  相似文献

Leaf out time is a widely used indicator of climate change and represents a critical transition point of annual seasonality in most temperate ecosystems. We compared three sources of data to determine the effect of spring temperature on tree leaf out: field observations, remotely sensed satellite data, and experimental warming. All three methods recorded earlier leaf out with warmer spring temperatures. However, leaf out timing was more than twice as sensitive to temperature in the field study (advancing at a rate of 6.1 days/°C), as under experimental warming (2.1 days/°C), with remote sensing intermediate (3.7 days/°C). Researchers need to be aware of the currently unexplained differences among methodologies when using phenological data to parameterize or benchmark models that represent ecosystem processes. The mechanisms behind these discrepancies must be better understood if we are to confidently predict responses of leaf out timing to future climates.  相似文献

Although larvae of the Antarctic midge, Belgica antarctica, live for more than 2 years, the adult and embryonic stages are brief and are less well known than the larvae. In this report, we provide additional details of these understudied life stages with laboratory observation on adult emergence, longevity, preoviposition period and embryonic development. Male adults emerged slightly earlier than females, and they also lived longer. More than a half (57 %) of the adults that emerged in the laboratory were males. Females produced only a single egg mass and died within a day after oviposition. Embryonic development required 16 days at 4 °C, and prior to hatching, the pharate larvae perform a distinct sequence of behaviors that include drinking and peristaltic movement. We also discuss points that need to be resolved for laboratory propagation of this species.  相似文献
