Activity of neurons of the globus pallidus was recorded extracellularly during stimulation of the caudate nucleus. It is demonstrated that background activity (BA) of most neurons of the globus pallidus is depressed under these conditions, which is regarded as a manifestation of inhibition of the investigated neurons. The period of BA depression varied in different cells from 60 to 500 msec. In some cases this period was preceded by emergence of an action potential with a latent period of 10–20 msec. In addition to inhibition of the activity of globus pallidus neurons during stimulation of the caudate nucleus, it was possible to record evoked responses of the given neurons in the form of group discharges with a latent period of 18–40 msec and single action potentials with a latent period of 50–100 msec. The neurons that reacted with a shorter latent period were localized at the lateral limit of the globus pallidus, whereas neurons with other kinds of responses were distributed in the globus pallidus comparatively evenly.A. Stimulation of the head of the caudate nucleus in cats anesthetized with chloralose and pentobarbital evoked spike responses of the Purkinje cells and other cerebellar cortical neurons in the paramedian lobes, lobulus simplex, and the tuber of the vermis. Phasic responses in the form of simple discharges (on account of activation of the neurons through mossy fibers) appeared mainly after a latent period of 5–12 and 14–20 msec; the latent period of responses consisting of complex discharges (on account of activation of Purkinje cells through climbing fibers) was 5–6, 9–22 msec, or more. Depending on the latent period, the spike responses differed in their rhythm of generation. In response to stimulation of the caudate nucleus with a frequency of 4–6/sec recruiting responses were found. An inhibitory pause was an invariable component of the tonic responses. During stimulation of the globus pallidus responses of the same types (phasic and tonic) appeared as during stimulation of the caudate nucleus, but they differed in the distribution of the neurons by latent period of spike responses. The minimal latent period was 4 msec. Recruiting also was observed during repetitive stimulation of the globus pallidus. During stimulation of the substantia nigra Pukinje cells activated by climbing fibers responded. Evoked complex discharges appeared after a stable latent period of 8.5±0.3 msec. Arguments are put forward regarding the role of the substantia nigra, the globus pallidus, nuclei of the inferior olive, and also the thalamic nuclei in the mechanism of caudato-cerebellar oligosynaptic and polysynaptic connections.N. Electrically induced afterdischarge (ADs) were evoked in the cats' dorsal hippocampus. The action of the conditioning prestimulation of the pallidus nucleus on AD duration was studied. A significant facilitatory influence was observed when pallidal conditioning stimulation immediately preceded hippocampal test stimulation. The time course of the phenomenon showed a decrease of the conditioning action when the interval between the two stimulations increased : complete disappearance of the effect occurred after about 800 ms. Results are discussed as far as functional relationships between basal ganglia and rhinencephalic system are concerned.  相似文献

The action of the pallidum on electrically induced afterdischarge of the hippocampus (HAD) was studied. Significant facilitatory influences on HAD duration were observed when pallidal conditional stimulation immediately preceded hippocampal test stimulation. The phenomenon appeared to be into correlation with the interval between conditioning and test stimulation. Experimental data are discussed as strongly presumptive of a functional interrelationship between the inhibitory role played by the caudate on both pallidum and hippocampus; facilitatory influence of the pallidum on HAD duration is discussed too.  相似文献

Synaptic processes in red nucleus neurons produced by stimulating the entoped-uncular nucleus and the globus pallidus were investigated during acute experiments on cats using intracellular recording techniques. It was found that stimulating these structures produces mono- and polysynaptic excitation of rubrospinal neurons. Analysis of the time parameters of the EPSP recordings obtained suggested that they were produced by activation of the axosomatic and axodendritic synapses of rubrospinal neurons. Mechanisms of basal ganglia involvement in the integrating of red nucleus activity are examined.L. A. Orbeli Institute of Physiology, Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, Erevan. Neuronal response in the caudate nucleus to presentation of a wide variety of visual and other sensory stimuli was investigated in waking cats. Pronounced discrepancies in background activity of unknown origin as well as differing neuronal activity level were noted in adjacent sections of the nucleus. Of the neurons from which readings of response to sensory stimulation could be made, some reacted to presentation of exclusively visual and others to tactile stimuli; a third group responded to a combination of visual and somatic stimulation only. Response could only be produced in cells of all types by a high level of activity in the animal. Visual stimuli attracting the animal's interest proved to be the most effective form of stimulation. Ipsi- and contralateral sides of the animal's body were both represented in the caudate nucleus of each hemisphere. Neuronal response in the caudate nucleus may be compared with that produced by application of similar stimuli in cells belonging to different cortical areas.Institute for Research on Information Transmission, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. In chronic free-moving cats unilateral, low frequency, long duration stimulation of the caudate nucleus causes a significant reduction of food intake. The effects are greatest at the beginning of the stimulation. On cessation of stimulation the animals take enough food to compensate for that lost during the time of stimulation. Results are discussed either considering interrelationships between striatum and lateral hypothalamus, either regarding recent viewpoints distinguishing two striatal compartments: dorsal or "non limbic" striatal region and ventral or "limbic" striatal region.  相似文献

Spontaneous unit activity recorded extracellularly from the caudate nucleus in acute experiments on cats was analyzed. A graph of the sliding mean frequency, an interspike interval histogram, correlogram, intensity function, and histogram of correlation between adjacent intervals were plotted for the spontaneous activity of each neuron. The spontaneous activity of neurons of the caudate nucleus showed considerable variability in time and its mean frequency varied for different neurons from 0.5 to 20 spikes/sec. Depending on the temporal pattern of the spikes and also on the statistical indices, spontaneous unit activity in the caudate nucleus was conventionally divided into two types: single and grouped. A switch from one type of activity to the other was observed for the same neuron. On the basis of the data as a whole it is impossible to regard the spontaneous unit activity of the caudate nucleus as a simple random (Poissonian) spike train.A. A. Activity of neuron pairs in the caudate nucleus, derived simultaneously by a single microelectrode, was investigated in experiments on lightly anesthetized, immobilized cats. Strong temporal correlation was shown to be characteristic of the spontaneous activity of a neuron pair if grouped discharges were present in that activity. If, however, spontaneous activity was characterized by impulses randomly distributed in time, temporal correlation was observed in only 50% of cases, it was weaker, and it reflected excitatory and inhibitory interactions equally. In many cases negative correlation was observed in discharges of neurons within the time interval of 0–4 msec. Electrical stimulation of the various afferent inputs of the caudate nucleus not only did not cause correlation to appear in the discharges of the neurons but, on the contrary, it abolished correlation which existed for that same pair of neurons discharging spontaneously. Comparison of the results with data in the literature indicates that, by the character of interaction of its neurons, the caudate nucleus is one of the group of associative nuclei of the brain.A. A. Electrical stimulation of the globus pallidus of cats produces a stereotype behaviour like that following the injection of high doses of d,1-amphetamine. This drug enhances pallidal response. On the other hand, pallidal stimulation facilitates formation of amphetamine-induced stereotypy which weakens after bilateral destruction of the globus pallidus. Neuroleptic haloperidol in very low doses abolishes pallidal as well as amphetamine-induced stereotypy. As supposed pallidal stereotypy may be connected with the disturbance of nigro-strio-pallidal relations.  相似文献

A study was made of the functional significance of GABA-ergic structures of the substantia nigra (SN) and the caudate nucleus (CN) and their role in food-procuring behaviour of cats. Analysis was made of behavioral and EEG-effects of local GABA and the GABA antagonist, picrotoxin, microinjections into the studied brain structures. Stimulation of the GABA-ergic structures of the SN produced a sedative effect and depression of the cat food-procuring behaviour. Effects of stimulation of the CN GABA-ergic structures were to a great degree reverse. The conclusion has been made that GABA-ergic structures of the SN and the CN play different roles in controlling the CN inhibitory influence upon food-procuring behaviour.  相似文献

It is known that the lesion of the nigrostriatal and pallidofugal systems causes an experimental condition comparable to the hypothalamic sindrome, with severe aphagia and adipsia. It was considered of interest to study the effects of the low frequency long-duration stimulation of the substantia nigra and the globus pallidus on feeding behaviour. Experiments were performed on eight chronic cats with electrodes implanted in SN (pars compacta) and in the GP (pars externa). In the 2 hours of observation the food intake and the number of food-taking acts were calculated. The stimulation was induced continuously in the former hour. The modification in food intake, also on the basis of somatic behavioural observations may be ascribed to motor impairment rather than to involvement of a motivational state.  相似文献
