Young (i.e. 5-mm long) leaves of the window-plant Frithia pulchra(Mesembryanthemaceae) allocate approx, 21 % of their volumeto epidermis, 49 % to chlorenchyma, and 29 % to window tissue.By the time leaves are 25 mm long, the relative volumes of epidermisand chlorenchyma decrease to approx, 7 and 27 % respectively.During the same period, the relative volume of window tissueincreases from 29 to 66 %. The relative volumes of epidermis,window, and chlorenchyma tissues do not change as leaf lengthincreases from 25 to 57 mm. These results indicate that earlystages of leaf development in F. pulchra involve preferentialreallocations of volume to different tissues, whereas laterstages of leaf development involve uniform expansion of allof the leaf's tissues (i.e. the relative volumes of tissuesdo not change). The relative volumes of epidermis and windoware always largest in the lower third of a leaf. The relativevolume of chlorenchyma is largest in the upper third of youngleaves but becomes constant in the upper two thirds of leavesduring later stages of development. These results, indicatingthat leaves and tissues of F. pulchra are asymmetric and developpolarly, are discussed relative to corresponding studies ofcellular size and leaf structure. The complex floral structure in the southern African genusConophytum (Mesembryanthemaceae; 77 spp.) is described in detail and assigned to three basic floral types, two of which can be divided into two subtypes. Syracosphaera pulchra, the type species of the genus was isolated into unialgal culture and studied with both the light and electron microscope. A conspicuous coiling haptonema is present containing seven microtubules in the shaft and eight in the basal region; features shared with many taxa in the order Prymnesiales. The proximal and distal coccoliths differ in shape but resemble each other structurally: the outer elements alternate to make the rim. The proximal coccoliths possess an organic base-plate scale which is absent in the distal coccoliths. The uncalcified organic scales are ornamented by a radial, more or less concentric, fibrillar pattern and are arranged in several layers between the proximal coccoliths and the plasmalemma. The ultrastructure of the cell is typical of prymnesiophycean algae. The flagellar apparatus is characterized by the absence of secondary microtubular bundles which are usually well developed in other coccolithophorids with two microtubular roots. This feature is also rather similar to that found in members of the Prymnesiales.

This investigation has indicated that S. pulchra has, in some respects, a closer affinity with members of the Prymnesiales than with the coccolithophorids.  相似文献

Photosynthetic activity, the content of various photosynthetic pigments, and the chloroplast ultrastructure were examined in the leaves of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants of different ages grown under red light (600–700 nm, 100 W/m2). In pea leaves tolerant to red-light irradiation, chloroplast ultrastructure did not essentially change. In the first true leaves of cucumber plants susceptible to red-light irradiation, we observed a considerable increase in the number and size of plastoglobules, the appearance of chloroplasts lacking grana or containing only infrequent grana, and stromal thylakoids. In the upper leaves of 22-day-old cucumber plants, the chloroplast structure was essentially similar to that of the control chloroplasts in white light, and we therefore suppose that these plants have acclimated to red light.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown germination to be stimulated by fire-related cues such as heat and charate extract and, more recently, plant-derived smoke extract. However, smoke extract has not been tested on non-fire-prone species. We hypothesized that smoke-induced germination would be restricted to fire-prone species and investigated responses of members of the family Mesembryanthemaceae which has genera confined to fire-prone and to non-fire-prone habitats as well as genera with species across both habitats. Results of germination trials of smoke effects did not support the hypothesis. Plant-derived smoke extract stimulated germination in both fire-prone and non-fire-prone species. These results cast some doubt on the ecological significance of smoke as a fire-related cue and we suggest that investigation of effects of fire-related cues on non-fire prone species may throw light on general mechanisms of germination.  相似文献

The setal armature of Eurydice pulchra Leach is described using an ordinary optical microscope. On the basis of size, setae are divided into macrotrichs and microtrichs. Macrotrichs are further classified according to structural similarities into four groups. Only two types of microtrichs have been recognized. The distribution of the different setae on both adults and juveniles is described and where possible an attempt is made to relate morphology and distribution to function.  

Summary:


The setal armature of E. pulchra has been divided into macrotrichs, varying in length from 0·025 to 0·4 mm, and microtrichs varying in length from 2 to 10 μm. The macrotrichs have been classified into groups based on structural similarities and 17 distinct types have been recognized. Each differ in length, degree of chitinization and modification of the shaft wall. The distribution of the macrotrichs has been described and particular types have been shown to occur in distinct positions on the body. Many of the macrotrichs are peculiar to one position on the body.
Two types of microtrichs have been described, a single type approximately 10 μm in length and a smaller type 2 μm in length. The latter occurs in short crescentic rows principally on the pleopods and oostegites. All setal types occurring in the adult have been shown to be present in the newly emerged juvenile although the number developed is very much less. Similar setal types are present in males and females. An attempt has been made to relate the morphology and distribution of both macrotrichs and microtrichs to possible functions.  相似文献

We studied the embryonic development of body-wall musculature in the acoel turbellarian Convoluta pulchra by fluorescence microscopy using phalloidin-bound stains for F-actin. During stage 1, which we define as development prior to 50% of the time between egg-laying and hatching, actin was visible only in zonulae adhaerentes of epidermal cells. Subsequent development of muscle occurred in two distinct phases: first, formation of an orthogonal grid of early muscles and, second, differentiation of other myoblasts upon this grid. The first elements of the primary orthogonal muscle grid appeared as short, isolated, circular muscle fibers (stage 2; 50% developmental time), which eventually elongated to completely encircle the embryo (stage 3; at 60% of total developmental time). The first primary longitudinal fibers appeared later, along with some new primary circular fibers, by 60-63% of total developmental time (stage 4). From 65 to 100% of total developmental time (stages 5 to 7), secondary fibers, using primary fibers as templates, arose; the number of circular and longitudinal muscles thus increased, and at the same time parenchymal muscles began appearing. Hatchlings (stage 8) possessed about 25 circular and 30 longitudinal muscles as well as strong parenchymal muscles. The remarkable feature of the body wall of many adult acoel flatworms is that longitudinal muscles bend medially and cross each other behind the level of the mouth. We found that this development starts shortly after the appearance of the ventral mouth opening within the body wall muscle grid. The adult organization of the body-wall musculature consists of a grid of several hundred longitudinal and circular fibers and a few diagonal muscles. Musculature of the reproductive organs developed after hatching. Thus, extensive myogenesis must occur also during postembryonic development. Comparison between the turbellarians and the annelids suggests that formation of a primary orthogonal muscle grid and its subsequent use as a template for myoblast differentiation are the two basic developmental phases in vermiform Spiralia if not in the Bilateria as a whole. Finally, our new data suggest that for the Acoela the orthogonal primary patterning of longitudinal and circular muscles in the body wall is achieved without using originally positional information of the nervous system.  相似文献

Using an open and a closed system of gas analysis, it was found that CO2 evolution in light and in darkness from plant leaves (sunflower, soybean, watermelon, eggplant, and jackbean) have a different response to temperature. While the rate of CO2 evolution in light increased with increasing temperature from 17 to 35° and then declined, the rate of CO2 evolution in darkness increased continuously up to 40°. The rate of CO2 evolution in light was affected by light intensity. At 1800 ft-c and below 35° the rate of CO2 evolution in light was greater than in darkness, but above 35° it became lower than in darkness. The Q10 for CO2 evolution in light was consistently lower than that in darkness.  相似文献

Summary Typosyllis pulchra reproduces by the production of three to four gamete-bearing stolons (schizogamy) during consecutive 30-day periods. Although gonads are found in a large number of segments, only those in the posterior-most segments produce gametes and become incorporated into the developing stolon. The more anterior gonads remain undifferentiated and probably sexually undetermined until they are needed in future stolonizations. Gonial cells, which will eventually become either male or female, are ultrastructurally identical at the onset of each stolonization period. Spermatogenesis is marked by a short proliferative period followed by differentiation and spermiogenesis. The first ultrastructural signs of spermatogenesis were found in coelomic spermatogonia on day 10 of stolon formation. Spermatogonia are joined by intercellular bridges, which are maintained until the early spermatid stage. Synaptonemal complexes mark the onset of meiosis, which is apparently synchronized in the syncytial clusters of primary spermatocytes. Spermiogenesis occurs during the final 10 days of stolonization and a variety of stages is present within a single animal. All sperm mature by the time the stolon detaches. Acrosome formation and nuclear condensation are described in addition to the ultrastructure of mature sperm.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the interrenal (adrenocortical) cells of trout (Salmo fario L.) was studied after dexamethasone treatment. A procedure for identifying and isolating interrenal tissue fragments from the surrounding head kidney tissue prior to their preparation for electron microscopy is described. The peripheral plasma cortisol concentrations were measured in order to evaluate the steroidogenic activity of this tissue.The interrenal cells of control animals contain numerous mitochondria with tubular cristae, and a well developed and highly organized smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER). The scarcity, or absence, of lipid droplets contrasts markedly with the abundance of SER.Treatment with dexamethasone results in a decrease steroidogenic activity of the interrenal cells, as indicated by the fall in plasma cortisol concentrations. The interrenal cells are small, but still contain numerous mitochondria. The SER is poorly developed, but masses of densely intermeshed smooth cisternae subsist. Lipid droplets do not accumulate in these cells; this peculiarity is discussed in connection with the virtual absence of liposomes in teleost interrenal cells.  相似文献

Abstract. The embedding of Lithops plants into the soil could be an adaptation to protect the plants from critical low or high temperatures. Thermoelectric measurements on Lithops lesliei N.E. Br and L. turbiniformis (Haw.) N.E. Br. were made to determine whether the temperatures of the plant tissues at various depths differ from those in the soil close to the plant. The environmental conditions of their habitat were simulated in a growth chamber equipped with a cold sky to simulate the net radiation loss during a cool and clear night. The effects of microclimatic conditions resulting in dew or hoar-frost formation on the plant were investigated, as well as the temperature range where freezing occurs.
The results provide no evidence that the embedding of a Lithops plant into the soil yields advantages to the plants in respect of critical low or high temperatures. Plant temperatures are always very close to the soil temperatures at the same depth, but heat fluxes from the bottom or the plant and its surrounding soil to the top of the plant can occur if the plant freezes. No positive effect on the temperature relations could be detected when dew or hoar-frost is formed on the top of the plant. Lithops is frost hard to at least –3°C.  相似文献

Spermatogenesis and the structure of the testes were studied ultrastructurally in Isodiametra pulchra (Smith and Bush, Transactions of the American Microscopical Society 1991; 110: 12; Hooge and Tyler, Journal of zoological systematics and evolutionary research 2005; 43: 100). The testes are paired, compact, non‐follicular and lie dorsally and dorso‐laterally to the paired ovaries, partially enfolding them. All stages of spermatogenesis, including spermiogenesis, are described at the ultrastructural level and their spatial organization within the testes is discussed. The cells at the early stages of spermatogenesis (spermatogonia and spermatocytes) are located on the dorsal and dorso‐lateral sides of the testes, while the late stages (spermatids and filiform spermatozoa with 9+2 axonemes) lie at the ventral and inner periphery of the testes, adjacent to ovaries. All the cell types can be found both at the anterior and the posterior end of the testes. The value of the structure of the testes as a phylogenetic marker is addressed.  相似文献

The requirements for activation of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) were investigated in leaves of Arabidopsis wild-type and a mutant incapable of light activating rubisco in vivo. Upon illumination with saturating light intensities, the activation state of rubisco increased 2-fold in the wild-type and decreased in the mutant. Activation of fructose 1,6-bisphosphate phosphatase was unaffected by the mutation. Under low light, rubisco deactivated in both the wild-type and the mutant. Deactivation of rubisco in the mutant under high and low light led to the accumulation of high concentrations of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate. Inhibiting photosynthesis with methyl viologen prevented ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate accumulation but was ineffective in restoring rubisco activation to the mutant. Net photosynthesis and the rubisco activation level were closely correlated and saturated at a lower light intensity in the mutant than in wild-type. At CO2 concentrations between 100 and 2000 microliters per liter, the activation state was a function of the CO2 concentration in the dark but was independent of CO2 concentration in the light. High CO2 concentration (1%) suppressed activation in the wild-type and deactivation in the mutant. These results support the concept that rubisco activation in vivo is not a spontaneous process but is catalyzed by a specific protein. The absence of this protein, rubisco activase, is responsible for the altered characteristics of rubisco activation in the mutant.  相似文献

Convoluta pulchra is a small worm living in the surface sediment of mud flats where it feeds on diatoms. It is roughly teardrop in shape with a ventral groove in which the mouth sits, and it can move in a variety of ways, readily distorting its body in bending, twisting, and turning motions. Fluorescently labeled probes for filamentous actin revealed the musculature in whole mounts of the worm. In the body wall, the musculature consisted of a grid of circular, longitudinal crossover (that is, with a longitudinal orientation in the anterior half of the body but arcing medially to cross over to the contralateral side of the body behind the level of the mouth), and a few diagonal fibers. Inside the body was a strong, irregular brush of muscles originating at the rostral tip of the body and anchoring laterally and posteriorly along the body wall, and strong dorsoventral muscles flanked the ventral groove. Two fans of muscles in the ventral and dorsal body wall reached posteriorly and laterally; that on the dorsal side originated at junctures of the dorsoventral muscles with the body wall and that on the ventral body wall originated from the mouth. By their positions, certain groups of muscles could be correlated with given movements: the crossover muscles with some turning motions and feeding, and the inner muscles with probing and retraction motions of the rostrum and with a tuck-and-turn motion the worm used to turn itself around. Electron microscopy showed numerous maculae adherentes junctions linking all muscle types and special junctions linking the musculature with the epidermis. The latter myoepidermal junctions were of dimensions larger than those of maculae adherentes and contained an interlaminar material which we believe represents islands of basal matrix comparable to basement membrane. The ability of photosynthesis and CAM to acclimate to low (220 µmol m?2 s?1; LL) and relatively high (550 µmol m?2 s?1; HL) photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) was investigated in the CAM-cycling species Delosperma tradescantioides by means of CO2 gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence analysis. Furthermore, the influence of short-term drought on malic acid accumulation and the activity of photosystem II (PSII) was studied to assess the possible interactions between drought and the prevailing PPFD in this species. HL plants showed features of sun versus shade acclimation relative to LL plants. Nocturnal malic acid accumulation (Δ-malate) and leaf water content also tended to be higher in HL plants. Irrespective of the PPFD during growth, the weak Δ-malate doubled within 3 days of drought. Despite largely restricted CO2 uptake, photosynthetic activity as estimated from fluorescence analysis declined only ca 5%. After 7 days of drought, when plants showed CAM-idling and Δ-malate had decreased again, potential carbon assimilation was still ca 84% of that in well-watered plants and remained relatively constant throughout the day. Decarboxylation of malic acid accounted for ca 23% of potential assimilation assuming total oxidation of a maximum portion of this organic acid. Drought did not affect predawn maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm). Nonphotochemical quenching (qN) increased (24%) in response to desiccation and resulted in a more or less constant reduction state of PSII. This increase in qN resulted mainly from the change in its fast-relaxing component (qNF), while the slow component (qNS) was significant only at or above saturating PPFD in both HL and LL plants. The photon response characteristics of PSII, which differed between LL and HL plants, were unaffected by short-term drought. Photon harvesting and photon use were always adjusted to guarantee a low reduction state of PSII. Results suggest that in both LL and HL plants CAM-cycling may help to stabilize photosynthesis but to a large extent by other means than simply providing internally derived CO2.  相似文献
