Responses of insect populations may be related to patch size and patch edge responses, but it is not clear how to identify these rapidly. We used a random-walk model to identify three qualitative responses to edges: no edge effect (the null model), reflecting edges and absorbing edges. Interestingly, no edge effect meant that abundance was lower at edges than in the center of patches, and reflecting edges have similar abundance at edges and centers. We then characterized several insect species’ response within maize plots to patch edges and patch size, using a simple, quick, qualitative experiment. Coleomegilla maculata and Trichogramma spp. were the only organisms that responded to patch size and edges as patch theory and the null edge model would predict. Ostrinia nubilalis larvae and possibly Rhopalosiphum maidis and eggs of Chrysopa spp. responded to patch size and edges as predicted by an attracting edge model. Estimation of predation rates suggested that the spatial distribution of these species might be determined by predators. Edge effects or the lack thereof relative to patch size may be rapidly determined for arthropod species, which could lead to understanding the mechanism(s) underlying these effects. This information may be useful in reaction diffusion models through a scaling-up approach to predict population structure of species among patches in a landscape. The usefulness of a number of parameters is investigated for describing the seasonal variability in insect populations, especially in relation to sample size. It is found that Seasonal Niche Breadth (B) and its maximal value (BM) are useful only for large samples. For smaller samples one tends to find the same values for these parameters whatever the distribution they are supposed to describe. The “standardized” ratio of these two parameters (B/BM) is completely useless. The Season Length (S. L.), defined as 52 minus the longest series of weeks in which the species was absent, or not observed, was found to be quite useful, especially at smaller sample sizes. For species which occur over a large part of the year and have been observed in large numbers, the ratio Min/Max is found to be quite useful. This is the number of individuals during the four weeks at the low point of the season divided by the number observed during the four weeks in the peak of the season. It is suggested that the seasonal distribution be estimated using S. L. or, when appropriate, Min/Max in order to estimate the Seasonal Standard Deviation (SSD), which assumes a normal seasonal distribution. With this SSD the 99 per cent range (Seasonal Range) can be calculated to characterize the seasonal distribution. With this Seasonal Range different species or different areas can profitably be compared in their seasonality characteristics even if there is a large difference in sample size.  相似文献

The abundance of moths was monitored with light-traps in two sites in southern Bohemia, České Budějovice for 22 years and in Černiš for 9 years. In these sites, that are vastly different in environmental stability and predictability, stability of insect populations was studied. The amplitude of fluctuations in abundance of the insect populations, as measured by the coefficient of variation (CV), varied a great deal between species so that there was a large overlap between the two sites. Nevertheless there was a highly significant tendency for species at Černiš, the more stable site, to have smaller values of CV, i.e., to be less fluctuating. Also in species co-occurring in the two sites, the CV at Černiš tended to be smaller. Trends in abundance of individual species over time, both increases and decreases, were common in both sites and did not differ between habitats. Environmental stability begets insect population stability in terms of the amplitude of the fluctuations, but trends in time occur irrespective of stability of the habitat.  相似文献

Summary Data are presented which show that fluctuations in the numbers of many insects are determined primarily by fluctuations in the carrying capacity of their habitats. Genetic variation in insect populations is frequently structured into discrete groups, or demes, that form in response to stochastic forces or natural selection. Because host-plant populations are often highly heterogeneous, phytophagous insects may form demes that are adapted to the unique traits of individual plants. Recent field experiments indicate that selection pressures imposed by host-plants can promote rapid adaptive evolution in natural insect populations at very fine spatial scales. Adaptive deme formation may be more common among endophagous insects, which feed and reside within plant tissue, than for externally feeding insects, because internal feeders experience stronger plant-mediated selection pressures.  相似文献

A distributed-parameter population dynamics model is developed specifically for use with variational optimization techniques. The objective is to develop a modeling/ optimization technique that will permit the development of optimal control policies which minimize combined costs of pest control and economic-yield loss. The model results and optimal control policies are continuous and distributed in time and in insect age. The technique is applied to a study of control by pesticide of the southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (Linnaeus), a major pest of soybeans in the South. In this case study, the model results agree well with field-survey results, while the optimal control trajectories are reasonable and suggest several avenues for further study.  相似文献

What are the mechanisms responsible for generating the erratic fluctuations observed in natural populations? This question has been at the centre of a long debate in contemporary ecology. The irregularities in the patterns of population abundance were initially mostly attributed to environmental factors. In the mid-1970s, however, it was proposed that these fluctuations may be generated intrinsically, by the underlying nonlinearities inherent in population processes. More recently, the focus of this argument has turned increasingly towards the statistical properties of population fluctuations, with many studies showing that ecological systems tend to be dominated by low-frequency or long-term dynamics, termed ''red'' noise. Currently, the source of the ''redness'' in ecological time-series is hotly debated, with the general consensus being that environmental variables are the major driving force. Here we show that three classic laboratory populations known to display irregular fluctuations also have reddened spectra. Furthermore, the dynamics of these populations show very well-defined generic scaling properties in the form of power laws. These results imply that long-term influences in ecological systems can be the product of intrinsic dynamics.  相似文献

Subterranean insect pests cause considerable economic damage but their concealment makes detection difficult. A portable acoustic system was developed and tested for its potential to rate the likelihood that trees in citrus groves were infested with Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.) larvae. The likelihood was rated independently by a computer program and an experienced listener that distinguished insect sounds from background noises. Diaprepes abbreviatus, Phyllophaga spp., or other pest insects were excavated from all 11 sites rated at high likelihood of infestation but were absent from 20 of 25 low-rated sites. There was a significant regression between the activity rate and the number of pest organisms present at recording sites although the correlation was weaker than between activity rate and likelihood of infestation. Although the system is at an early stage of development, the success of these field tests suggests that it has considerable potential as a tool to detect and monitor hidden infestations of insects in soil.  相似文献

A graphical model of the population dynamics of macroparasites and their hosts is developed. Three principal means by which the parasites can be regulated are considered: reduction in host density as a result of parasite-induced host mortality, reduction in host density as a result of parasite-induced host sterility, and competition among parasites within multiply-infected hosts. The means by which parasites are regulated has a major effect on the degree to which they can depress host population densities. In particular, a parasite that sterilizes its host is expected to reduce host density more than one that causes an equivalent decline in host fitness through increased mortality. A special case of the model is developed for herbivorous insects that, in the absence of parasites, are limited by larval food resources. Parasites that are regulated via parasite-induced host sterility will control the insect populations below the level set by larval resources if the threshold host density for the parasites (N(T)) is less than the ratio of carrying capacity to net reproductive rate of the insects (K/R). Data are presented showing that all three means of parasite regulation, but especially parasite-induced host sterility, can operate in Howardula aoronymphium, a nematode parasite of mycophagous Drosophila flies. Data from a field cage experiment show that, if these nematodes are regulated primarily via reductions in host density due to this sterility, the parameters N(T), K, and R are such that Howardula is likely to play an important role in controlling Drosophila populations. However, this conclusion must be tempered by the fact that these nematodes also cause increased host mortality and experience within-host competition, making the conditions for parasite control of the flies more stringent.  相似文献

Different population categories of apterous green peach aphid, adult sweet potato weevils, mature Caribbean fruit fly larvae and tobacco budworm larvae were permitted to move on dispersion ranges in the laboratory. Determination of distances dispersed by the larvae were made to show the effects of population sizes. In general, longer distances were dispersed by more individuals when larger numbers were released as compared with smaller ones.  相似文献

Persistence of insect viruses in field populations of alfalfa insects   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The persistence of viruses of five insects was observed in alfalfa fields. The insects were Autographa californica, Colias eurytheme, Pseudaletia unipuncta, Spodoptera exigua, and Trichoplusia ni. The isolated viruses were the granulosis (GV), the cytoplasmic-polyhedrosis (CPV), and the nuclear-polyhedrosis (NPV) viruses. The viruses persisted in the soil, on the alfalfa foliage, and in alternate hosts. In the soil, the viruses persisted even during the winter months when no foliage remained on the plants. Alfalfa sprouts harboring virus-infected larvae of C. eurytheme and S. exigua produced virus infections in larvae of these insects, but those with larvae of A. californica and P. unipuncta did not cause virus infection. The GVs and CPVs isolated from these insects were transmitted to nearly all of the other four species, but the NPVs appeared to be host specific.  相似文献

The role of bats or any generalist predator in suppressing prey populations depends on the predator's ability to track and exploit available prey. Using a qPCR fecal DNA assay, we document significant association between numbers of Brazilian free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) consuming corn earworm (CEW) moths (Helicoverpa zea) and seasonal fluctuations in CEW populations. This result is consistent with earlier research linking the bats' diet to patterns of migration, abundance, and crop infestation by important insect pests. Here we confirm opportunistic feeding on one of the world's most destructive insects and support model estimates of the bats' ecosystem services. Regression analysis of CEW consumption versus the moth's abundance at four insect trapping sites further indicates that bats track local abundance of CEW within the regional landscape. Estimates of CEW gene copies in the feces of bats are not associated with seasonal or local patterns of CEW abundance, and results of captive feeding experiments indicate that our qPCR assay does not provide a direct measure of numbers or biomass of prey consumed. Our results support growing evidence for the role of generalist predators, and bats specifically, as agents for biological control and speak to the value of conserving indigenous generalist predators.  相似文献

1. Estimates of the Lyapunov exponent, a statistic that measures the sensitive dependence of the dynamic behaviour of a system on its initial conditions, are used to characterize several sets of insect time series.
2. A new method is described to overcome the difficulty of defining the dynamics of an observed, noisy, short ecological time series. This method provides two test statistics for the estimated Lyapunov exponent.
3. This method is applied to forty-six time series comprising six aphid species from five sites and four moth species from six sites. There are few positive Lyapunov exponents and none is sufficiently large to characterize its time series as chaotic.
4. Two methods to estimate the Lyapunov exponent are compared; that based on logarithmically transformed counts yields less variable estimates for highly variable insect data than that based on untransformed counts.  相似文献

Wolbachia is an inherited intracellular bacterium found in many insects of medical and economic importance. The ability of many strains to spread through populations using cytoplasmic incompatibility, involving sperm modification and rescue, provides a powerful mechanism for driving beneficial transgenes through insect populations, if such transgenes could be inserted into and expressed by Wolbachia. However, manipulating Wolbachia in this way has not yet been achieved. Here, we demonstrate theoretically an alternative mechanism whereby nuclear rather than cytoplasmic transgenes could be driven through populations, by linkage to a nuclear gene able to rescue modified sperm. The spread of a 'nuclear rescue construct' occurs as long as the Wolbachia show imperfect maternal transmission under natural conditions and/or imperfect rescue of modified sperm. The mechanism is most efficient when the target population is already infected with Wolbachia at high frequency, whether naturally or by the sequential release of Wolbachia-infected individuals and subsequently the nuclear rescue construct. The results provide a potentially powerful addition to the few insect transgene drive mechanisms that are available.  相似文献
