Sedimentation has often been implicated as a factor in structuring epifaunal assemblages on hard substrata yet there are few studies that empirically test this relationship. This study investigated the effects of light and sedimentation conditions on the initial recruitment and subsequent development of an encrusting community at Lough Hyne, S.W. Ireland. Slate settlement panels were subjected to four different conditions of sedimentation and light. The five replicates of each treatment were photographed at approximately 6-week intervals over 13 months. Values for Brillouin diversity (HB) and number of recruits were greatest for shaded panels sheltered from sediment. Number of species was much higher on downward facing panels relative to upward facing panels, regardless of conditions of sedimentation and light. Sedimentation resulted in reduced cover for some species, such as Lithothamnion spp., whilst others, such as Anomia ephippium, were less affected by this variable. Total space occupied was significantly higher for inverted panels, possibly indicating geotaxic behaviour of some larvae. Number of species on each panel condition was more similar for sets of panels exposed for shorter periods relative to the 13-month experiment, implying that post-settlement mortality may differ between treatments.  相似文献

This paper discusses data on the horizontal and vertical distribution of the spat ofMya arenaria andM. uzenensis on collectors for the cultivation of the scallopMizuhopecten yessoensis in Vostok Bay. The maximum settlement of the mollusks on scallop collectors occurred in the innermost part of the bay. The spat density ofM. arenaria on collectors was 2.6 times that ofM. uzenensis. M. arenaria larvae preferred settling on the upper portions of collectors, while the distribution ofM. uzenensis was random. The time of collector placement in the sea influenced spat numbers.  相似文献

The use of vibration is proposed as a means of controlling the settlement of marine fouling organisms. In this study, panels with embedded lead zirconate titanate, known as PZT, were placed in the field over 3?months. The panels were vibrated at different velocity levels at frequencies between 70 and 445?Hz. It was found that barnacles (Amphibalanus variegatus Darwin and Elminius sp.) were the only fouling organisms affected by the applied vibration, and these organisms settled in significantly lower numbers when the plates were excited at specific frequencies and amplitudes. Panels vibrating at relatively higher frequencies, greater than 260?Hz, exhibited reduced barnacle settlement, whilst lower frequencies in the 70–100?Hz range had little or no effect. The settlement of other fouling organisms such as tubeworms, bryozoans, ascidians and algae did not appear to be affected by the applied excitation. The experimental results showed that increasing the velocity amplitude of vibration was a contributing factor in inhibiting barnacle settlement.  相似文献

Seasonal distribution and community succession of macrofoulants were studied using concrete panels in the coastal waters of Kalpakkam, east coast of India, for a period of two years. The panels were suspended at 1 m, 4 m and 7 m depths and categorised into short-term and long-term exposures. A high total of 105 fouling taxa were recorded. The major fouling organisms observed were hydroids, barnacles, mussels, anthozoans and ascidians. Considerable faunistic and biomass variations were noticed both with respect to season and depth. The month of panel exposure had a significant influence on the succession of fouling communities. On the short-term panels, the maximum fouling biomass was 64 kg m–2 in 30 days at 4 m depth, whereas on the long-term panels, it was 250 kg m–2 after 216 days at 4 m depth. A comparison with the biomass values reported from elsewhere shows that biomass build-up in Kalpakkam coastal waters is one of the highest ever reported. Such a very high biomass accumulation is due to the extremely dense settlement of mussels, especially the green mussel,Perna viridis (L).  相似文献

Summary Experiments were performed to determine if earlier colonists inhibited, enhanced, or were necessary for establishment of later colonists during development of an estuarine fouling community at Lewes, Delaware. We determined the significance of earlier stages on the successional process by functionally removing early colonizing species. Since settlement of sessile invertebrates onto our experimental test plates was seasonal, we were able to accomplish functional removal of early colonists by putting out clean test panels after these species had ceased settling. Comparisons between panels initially submerged at three different times in 1974 and 1975, and between panels put out at one-month intervals throughout the study (to describe seasonal settlement patterns) allowed us to determine interactions between adult populations of earlier colonists and colonizing individuals of later arriving species. The dominant sessile species in our system and their times of settlement were: a barnacle (Balanus improvisus) — April through June, a polychaete (Hydroides dianthus) — July and August, a tunicate (Molgula manhatensis) — June through October, a hydroid (Tubularia crocea) — July through October, and a mussel (Mytilus edulis) — November through April. All successional series eventually came to be dominated by M. edulis, and it persisted as the dominant for over a year.A variety of species interactions were observed. M. edulis inhibited colonization by all other dominants and B. improvisus partially inhibited settlement of M. manhattensis. The presence of adult M. manhattensis had no influence on summer settlement of T. crocea, but the hydroids enhanced settlement of tunicates in the fall. During both years of our study, larger settlements of mussels were noted on panels harboring tunicates and hydroids than on bare surfaces. H. dianthus, on the other hand, became established only on bare substrates, and colonization was almost totally inhibited by other dominants.Development in our fouling community did not conform to any single model of community development presented to date. Instead, components of several models were observed within our relatively simple (in terms of number of species) system. For example, facilitation (enhancement of later colonists by earlier ones) and inhibition (resistance of earlier colonists to invasion by later colonists) were both observed. However, we found no evidence earlier colonists were essential for establishment of the next developmental stage. In fact, inhibitory interactions appeared to be much more prevalent than facilitative interactions. The former may also have more profound effects on community development since they more often determine eventual species compositions.  相似文献

The antifouling efficacy of a series of 18 textured (0.2–1000 μm) and non-textured (0 μm) polydimethylsiloxane surfaces with the profiles of round- and square-wave linear grating was tested by recording the settlement of fouling organisms in the laboratory and in the field by monitoring the recruitment of a multi-species fouling community. In laboratory assays, the diatoms Nitzschia closterium and Amphora sp. were deterred by all surface topographies regardless of texture type. Settlement of propagules of Ulva sp. was lower on texture sizes less than the propagule size, and settlement of larvae of Saccostrea glomerata and Bugula neritina was lower on texture sizes closest to, but less than, the sizes of larvae. After a six month field trial, all textured surfaces lost their deterrent effect; however, the foul-release capabilities of textures were still present. High initial attachment was correlated with most fouling remaining after removal trials, indicating that fouling organisms recruited in higher numbers to surfaces upon which they attached most strongly.  相似文献

Zwitterionic polymers such as poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA) and poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) (polyCBMA) have demonstrated impressive fouling-resistance against proteins and mammalian cells. In this paper, the effects of these surface chemistries on the settlement and behavior of an ubiquitous fouling organism, the cypris larva of the barnacle Balanus amphitrite (=Amphibalanus amphitrite), were studied in the laboratory. Conventional settlement assays and behavioral analysis of cyprids using Noldus Ethovision 3.1 demonstrated significant differences in settlement and behavior on different surfaces. Cyprids did not settle on the polySBMA or polyCBMA surfaces over the course of the assay, whereas settlement on glass occurred within expected limits. Individual components of cyprid behavior were shown to differ significantly between glass, polySBMA and polyCBMA. Cyprids also responded differently to the two zwitterionic surfaces. On polySBMA, cyprids were unwilling or unable to settle, whereas on polyCBMA cyprids did not attempt exploration and left the surface quickly. In neither case was toxicity observed. It is concluded that a zwitterionic approach to fouling-resistant surface development has considerable potential in marine applications.  相似文献

Mild steel (MS), stainless steel (SS) and copper (Cu) test panels were immersed in the surface water of Dona Paula Bay over a period of 15 d. During the immersion period data on the hydrography, nutrients and suspended matter were also collected. The suspended matter and fouling products on the MS, SS and Cu panels were analysed for organic carbon (OC), organic nitrogen (ON), chlorophyll a (chl a), protein and carbohydrate concentration and composition, and the dry weight (DW) was recorded. Compared to suspended matter, the chemical and biochemical components of the fouling products showed strong temporal and substratum related differences. The microfouling biomass (as DW, OC, ON, chl a and protein) on all the test panels generally increased over the period of immersion. Carbohydrates were more abundant in the suspended matter whereas fouling products were enriched in proteins. The contribution of protein-carbon to the total carbon increased over the period of immersion for the microfouling products on MS and SS whilst it did not show a consistent trend on Cu. Whereas, the carbohydrate-carbon contribution to the total carbon increased for the fouling products on MS, it did not exhibit a particular pattern on SS or Cu over the period of immersion. Capillary gas chromatographic analysis showed the presence of glucose, galactose, mannose, arabinose, xylose, fucose and ribose in both the fouling products and suspended matter. However, there were differences in the relative distribution of these monosaccharides in the suspended matter and the fouling products. Glucose was the most abundant monosaccharide, which showed strong temporal variations in suspended matter. In contrast, the wt % concentrations of individual monosaccharides showed large temporal differences for the fouling products, which were strongly influenced by the period of immersion and the type of test substratum. Glucose and fucose were relatively more abundant in the fouling products on SS and Cu, whilst glucose was the most abundant monosaccharide on MS. The monosaccharide and chemical composition data suggest strong temporal changes in the composition of the fouling products.  相似文献

Many experiments utilize static immersion tests to evaluate the performance of ship hull coatings. These provide valuable data; however, they do not accurately represent the conditions both the hull and fouling organisms encounter while a ship is underway. This study investigated the effect of static and dynamic immersion on the adhesion and settlement of diatoms to one antifouling coating (BRA 640), four fouling-release coatings (Intersleek® 700, Intersleek® 900, Hempasil X3, and Dow Corning 3140) and one standard surface (Intergard® 240 Epoxy). Differences in community composition were observed between the static and dynamic treatments. Achnanthes longipes was present on all coatings under static immersion, but was not present under dynamic immersion. This was also found for diatoms in the genera Bacillaria and Gyrosigma. Melosira moniformis was the only diatom present under dynamic conditions, but not static conditions. Several common fouling diatom genera were present on panels regardless of treatment: Amphora, Cocconeis, Entomoneis Cylindrotheca, Licmophora, Navicula, Nitzschia, Plagiotropis, and Synedra. Biofilm adhesion, diatom abundance and diatom diversity were found to be significantly different between static and dynamic treatments; however, the difference was dependent on coating and sampling date. Several coatings (Epoxy, DC 3140 and IS 700) had significantly higher biofilm adhesion on dynamically treated panels on at least one of the four sampling dates, while all coatings had significantly higher diatom abundance on at least one sampling date. Diversity was significantly greater on static panels than dynamic panels for Epoxy, IS 700 and HX3 at least once during the sampling period. The results demonstrate how hydrodynamic stress will significantly influence the microfouling community. Dynamic immersion testing is required to fully understand how antifouling surfaces will respond to biofilm formation when subjected to the stresses experienced by a ship underway.  相似文献

Abstract

The role of surface topography as a defence against fouling in tropical sea stars was investigated. The sea stars Linckia laevigata, Fromia indica, Cryptasterina pentagona and Archaster typicus are not fouled and have paxillae (modified ossicles with a median vertical pillar) on their aboral surfaces, which varied in diameter, height and distance depending on species and position on the aboral surface, providing unique and complex surface microtopographies for each species. The surfaces of the sea stars L. laevigata, F. indica and A. typicus were moderately wettable, with their mean seawater contact angles, calculated from captive bubble measurements, being 60.1°, 70.3° and 57.3°, respectively. The seawater contact angle of C. pentagona could not be measured. To evaluate the effectiveness of the surface microtopographies in deterring the settlement of fouling organisms, field experiments with resin replicas of the four sea star species were conducted at three sites around Townsville, Australia, for 8 weeks during the dry and wet seasons. The fouling community and total fouling cover did not differ significantly between replicas of L. laevigata, F. indica, C. pentagona, A. typicus and control surfaces at any site during the dry season. Significant differences between fouling communities on the replicas of the sea stars and control surfaces were detected at two sites during the wet season. However, these differences were transitory, and the total fouling cover did not differ significantly between replicas of sea stars and control surfaces at two of the three sites. In contrast to recent literature on the effects of biofouling control by natural surfaces in the marine environment, the surface microtopographies of tropical sea stars alone were not effective in deterring the settlement and growth of fouling organisms.  相似文献

The epibenthic encrusting fauna of 2 creeks of the Caeté mangrove estuary, northern Brazil, was studied over a 13 month period using collectors fixed at 2.5 and 3.5 m above the creek bottom and in which upper and lower sides of ceramic and wooden panels were used as settlement substrates. The number of individuals of the most abundant organisms (barnacles, oysters and mussels) settling per panel was determined each month, for each substrate type, panel orientation and height above creek bottom. The barnacle, Fistulobalanus citerosum has a peak settlement period during the wet season whereas both peaks in the numbers of settlers of the oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae were recorded during the dry season and such discrete temporal patterns in settlement have also been observed for barnacles and oysters in other mangroves and estuaries. In contrast to other studies, settlement of the mussel Mytella falcata was generally low during the study period and may be related to over-exploitation of stocks in the region. Overall, settler density was usually greater on the underside of ceramic panels close to the creek bottom, similar to results of other studies of epibenthic settlement in diverse habitats.  相似文献

Cover of geniculate coralline algae is significantly greater on subtidal platforms than on vertical walls in a central California kelp forest. To determine the cause(s) of this pattern, settlement and growth of Calliarthron were compared on horizontal and vertical substrata attached to platforms or walls. Recruitment on horizontal substrata attached to reef walls indicated that spores were abundant along the walls. Densities of recruits were significantly smaller on vertical substrata attached to walls than on horizontal substrata attached to platforms, indicating that Calliarthron settlement is reduced on vertical substrata. Growth of basal crusts and the densities of fronds were also significantly greater on horizontal substrata attached to platforms than on vertical substrata attached to walls. Irradiance reaching wall surfaces was less than irradiance reaching platform surfaces. We suggest that light reaching wall surface is low enough to affect Calliarthron growth. These results indicate that the low abundance of Calliarthron on subtidal walls is a result of poor recruitment and slow growth.  相似文献

A fully automatic computer-controlled video analysis system has been used to study the movement of the green unicellular flagellate, Euglena gracilis in a horizontal or vertical cuvette. In darkness, in the absence of gaseous gradients, most cells swim straight upwards. While in a horizontal cuvette the transition between positive and negative phototaxis is found at about 1.5 W m-2, an excess of 30 W m-2 is required to reverse the upward swimming (due to the combined stimulus of negative gravitaxis and positive phototaxis) in a vertical cuvette. By studying the swimming direction in horizontal and vertical cuvettes in polarized light irradiated from above or from the side, respectively, the dichroic orientation of the photoreceptor molecules can be determined in three dimensions with respect to the axes of the cell: In a horizontal cuvette, in a linearly polarized beam from above, the cells orient predominantly at an angle of about 30° clockwise off the electric dipole transition moment as seen from above. The behavior in a vertical cuvette with polarized light entering from above indicates that the photoreceptor pigments are dichroically oriented 60° counterclockwise from the flagellar plane (seen from the front end of the cell). Experiments with horizontal polarized light indicate that the photoreceptor transition moment deviates 25° clockwise off the long axis of the cell.Abbreviation PFB paraflagellar body Dedicated to Prof. Dr. W. Attachment of eight groups of estuarine benthic species was recorded on a 4000 ft. intertidal-subtidal transect on Delaware Bay, Cape May, New Jersey. Asbestos-board panels were spaced at 3-foot vertical intervals and harvested at weekly intervals for two seasons. Intraspecies attachment patterns were very regular both spatially, and temporally indicating specific setting behavior interacting with a relatively stable environmental influence. Intertidal, on-bottom patterns were associated with Crepidula sp. and Balanus sp. whereas Sabellaria vulgaris preferred subtidal, on-bottom panels. Subtidal, off-bottom panels were colonized by Tubularia crocea, Conopeum tenuissimum, Caprellidae and Gammaridae. Crassostrea virginica showed a variable pattern, predominantly on-bottom and subtidal, but occasionally on-bottom intertidal, inshore. Factors producing concentration of larvae and release of the setting response are important in the inshore recruitment of oysters. All information indicates that the mechanism of selective settlement is a dominant factor in producing benthic assemblages.  相似文献

The early post-settlement stage is the most sensitive during the life history of reef building corals. However, few studies have examined the factors that influence coral mortality during this period. Here, the impact of fouling on the survival of newly settled coral spat of Acropora millepora was investigated by manipulating the extent of fouling cover on settlement tiles using non-toxic, wax antifouling coatings. Survival of spat on coated tiles was double that on control tiles. Moreover, there was a significant negative correlation between percentage cover of fouling and spat survival across all tiles types, suggesting that fouling in direct proximity to settled corals has detrimental effects on early post-settlement survival. While previous studies have shown that increased fouling negatively affects coral larval settlement and health of juvenile and adult corals, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show a direct relationship between fouling and early post-settlement survival for a broadcast spawning scleractinian coral. The negative effects of fouling on this sensitive life history stage may become more pronounced in the future as coastal eutrophication increases. Our results further suggest that targeted seeding of coral spat on artificial surfaces in combination with fouling control could prove useful to improve the efficiency of sexual reproduction-based coral propagation for reef rehabilitation.  相似文献

Abstract The spatial characteristics of larval galleries and mining behaviour of the coffee stem‐borer, Acalolepta cervinus (Hope), were studied on their host plant, Coffea arabica L. Results showed that entry holes were centrally located on stems of 4 cm diameter. Older larvae than third instar preferred tunnelling upward on the stems when diameter at the entry hole is larger than 4 cm, but downward on less than 4 cm. The vertical distribution of entry holes skewed toward lower position of stems. The larvae preferred drilling holes beside protrusions, especially beside the bases of adjacent branches. More entry holes were located on the south‐facing side of stems. Larvae boring hole on stem exhibited a strong location preference. This study helps us to understand larval tunnelling behaviour and to develop the control methods against the target pest.  相似文献

Submerged marine surfaces are rapidly colonized by fouling organisms. Current research is aimed at finding new, non-toxic, or at least environmentally benign, solutions to this problem. Barnacles are a major target organism for such control as they constitute a key component of the hard fouling community. A range of standard settlement assays is available for screening test compounds against barnacle cypris larvae, but they generally provide little information on mechanism(s) of action. Towards this end, a quick and reliable video-tracking protocol has been developed to study the behaviour of the cypris larvae of the barnacle, Balanus amphitrite, at settlement. EthoVision 3.0 was used to track individual cyprids in 30-mm Petri dishes. Experiments were run to determine the optimal conditions vis-à-vis acclimation time, tracking duration, number of replicates, temperature and lighting. A protocol was arrived at involving a two Petri dish system with backlighting, and tracking over a 5-min period after first acclimating the cyprids to test conditions for 2 min. A minimum of twenty replicates was required to account for individual variability in cyprid behaviour from the same batch of larvae. This methodology should be widely applicable to both fundamental and applied studies of larval settlement and with further refinements, to that of smaller fouling organisms such as microalgae and bacteria.  相似文献

Camponotus pennsylvanicus(DeGeer) and Tapinoma sessile(Say) exploit structural elements as guide-lines in their topographic orientation. This research documents the response of T. sessileand C. pennsylvanicusto a series of thigmotactic, gravitational, chemotactic, and phototactic cues while utilizing structural guidelines. Adherence to these guidelines is more pronounced on vertical than on horizontal surfaces and more pronounced in darkness than in daylight. Orientation switches from a crestline on the horizontal to a groove on the vertical. Light and odor trails serve an important role as distance cues in structural guideline orientation. The hierarchy of orientation cues and the adaptive significance of these ant's exploitation of structural guidelines are discussed.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to analyse the ability of generalist ants to climb waxy stems and to understand whether the avoidance of such stems is solely based on their reduced ability to adhere to these surfaces. We performed observations of the locomotory behaviour and recorded the traversed distances of Lasius niger ants on flower stems of three plant species covered with epicuticular wax crystals: Anethum graveolens, Dahlia pinnata, and Tagetes patula. Using conventional and cryo-scanning electron microscopy, the surface micromorphology of plant stems and structure of ant attachment organs were examined. The present study demonstrates that the reason ants do not climb wax-covered stems is not because they are incapable of walking on such vertical surfaces, as previously assumed, but rather because they have a choice of other substrates. Presumably, additional locomotory efforts are needed to master climbing on “greasy” stems, and ants need a certain time to adapt to a new quality of the stem surface, and after this period, they can walk on these waxy stems.  相似文献

Dreissena polymorpha recruitment on artificial substrates was studied in the Włocławek Dam Reservoir (the Vistula River, Poland). Densities on downstream and upstream vertical surfaces of plastic plates differed significantly from each other, with the former settled by more individuals. Vertical and horizontal plates, as well as upper and lower horizontal surfaces were settled similarly. In another experiment mussels settled on flat, convex and concave glass surfaces, directed upstream or downstream. Among the upstream surfaces, the concave ones were the most densely settled. No significant differences in mussel recruitment on various downstream surfaces were found. Thus, substrate shape influenced mussels only when they were exposed to water flow. Mussels were aggregated (Lloyd index > 1) along all the edges of the horizontal plates and along the upper edge of the vertical ones. Such distribution was probably caused by the post‐settlement movement of metamorphosed individuals. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献
