The Alaska skate, Bathyraja parmifera, is the most abundant species of skate on the eastern Bering Sea shelf, accounting for over 90% of total skate biomass. However, little is known regarding the life history of this species despite its common occurrence as bycatch in several Bering Sea fisheries. This is the first study to focus on the age and growth of B. parmifera. From 2003 to 2005, more than one thousand specimens were collected by fisheries observers and on scientific groundfish surveys. Annual banding patterns in more than 500 thin sections of vertebral centra were examined for age determination. Caudal thorns were tested as a potentially non-lethal ageing structure. Annual band pair deposition was verified through edge and marginal increment analyses. A three-parameter von Bertalanffy growth function and a Gompertz growth function were fit to observed length-at-age data. Both models provided significant fits, although the Gompertz function best described the overall pattern of growth in both males and females, based upon statistical criteria and parameter estimates. Age and size at 50% maturity were 9 years and 92 cm TL for males and 10 years and 93 cm TL for females. The maximum observed ages for males and females were 15 years and 17 years, respectively. Estimates of natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.14 to 0.28, and were based on published relationships between M and longevity, age at maturity, and the von Bertalanffy growth coefficient. Due to these life history characteristics and a lack of long-term species-specific stock data, a conservative management approach would be appropriate for B. parmifera.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Epinephelus morio (red grouper) and Mycteroperca bonaci (black grouper) were evaluated based on 533 specimens collected from artisanal fisheries landings in the Abrolhos Bank, Brazil, between May 2005 and September 2012. Sex ratio for the black grouper was 1:14 (n = 155 females and 11 males; 26.1–147 cm TL) and 1:10 for the red grouper (n = 334 females and 33 males; 15.0–96.0 cm TL). For both species, highest values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) for females were recorded between July and October, indicating spawning during the austral winter. The length at first maturity (L50) for females was estimated at 62.0 and 47.0 cm TL for the black and red grouper, respectively. Batch fecundity based on TL and TW ranged from 2 to 15.4?106 and 1.5 to 13.7?106 for the black and red grouper, respectively. Interviews with experienced fishers revealed that spawning seasons of both groupers are largely unrecognized. Results demonstrate a positive relationship between GSI peaks, lower temperatures and stronger winds. The information provided herein may help decision-making regarding fisheries management and conservation for E. morio and M. bonaci at various levels of governance in the Abrolhos Bank, the region with the largest and richest coralline reefs in the South Atlantic.  相似文献

A total of 552 individuals of Rioraja agassizi (257 females and 295 males) were collected by bottom-trawl during research cruises. Sexual dimorphism was observed with females are heavier than males for a given total length (TL). Using logistic regression, it was determined that TL at 50% maturity of males was 475 mm TL and of females 520 mm TL. This estimation agrees with the morphological parameters measured. Although not statistically significant, a peak in reproductive activity was observed in males during late spring and summer. The monthly variation in the gonadosomatic index and oviducal gland width, together with the largest diameter of ovarian follicles, suggests that R. agassizi females have a partially defined annual reproductive cycle with two peaks, one from November (spring) to February (summer) and another in July (winter).  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Psammobatis bergi was investigated based on 92 males and 136 females skates taken from the coastal bottom trawl fishery at Puerto Quequén, Argentina. The relationship between total body mass and total length (TL) was not significantly different between sexes, but females were heavier than males. Minimum length at maturity in males was 451 mm TL with a length ratio of 74%, whereas females were 415 mm TL with a length ratio of 74%. TL at which 50% of males were mature was 457.6 mm (75.6% of the largest male) and for females was 441.6 mm (79.1% of the largest female). The results indicate a continuous reproductive cycle during the year, with a maximum number of females carrying egg cases in warmer seasons.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to determine relative age, growth rate and size at maturity of tigerfish in the Okavango Delta as a basis for the development of a fisheries management plan. A total of 206 tigerfish Hydrocynus vittatus, collected by angling in August 2005,2006 and 2007, was assessed for sexual maturity and relative ages were estimated from 135 of these, using scales and whole and sectioned otoliths. Sectioned otoliths were the most appropriate method for ageing H. vittatus of up to 20 years old. Males were present in all relative age classes, proving that they do not disappear from the population at a young age, as previously thought. Males matured at 451 mm TL and females at 522 mm TL, corresponding to an approximate relative age of four years for both sexes. Males lived for up to 20 years, females for up to 16 years.  相似文献

The reproductive biology including insemination frequency, ovarian maturation, gonadosomatic index (GSI), size at first maturity, and fecundity of Melicertus kerathurus were investigated using monthly samples from Thermaikos Gulf. Insemination was recorded by the presence of a spermatophore in the thelycum, and ovarian development was based on macroscopic ovarian staging (ST1–ST5). Inseminated females were found throughout the year with high percentages recorded from April to July. Although all ovarian stages were represented in mated females, insemination increased with size and ovarian maturation. High percentages of vitellogenic or mature ovarian stages were observed from May to July, while immature and developing ovaries were predominant mainly in winter. Spawned ovaries occurred from May to October. Carapace length at first maturity based on the presence of a spermatophore (CL50sp) was estimated at 39.20 mm, while that based on the presence of vitellogenic and mature ovaries (CL50ov) at 40.70 mm. The seasonal peak in the proportion of mature females (ST4) varied with size. Inseminated females at ST4 and GSI peaked in June–July. GSI varied in relation to insemination status and ovarian stage. In large females (>50 mm CL), the decline in mature ovaries and GSI increment with size indicates a relative reduction in the reproductive output. The number of oocytes ranged from 62,742 to 602,947 (mean ± SD: 268,000 ± 113,000). As the prawns are targeted during the spawning season, mainly by the artisanal fishery, and female size at first maturity is selected by artisanal net size, managerial measures toward artisanal fishery should be implemented.  相似文献

Age, growth, and reproductive characteristics of blacktail snapper, Lutjanus fulvus, which is a commercial fish species, were investigated using 322 specimens (40–332 mm in fork length) caught around the Yaeyama Islands, Okinawa, Japan. Spawning season was estimated to be from April to October, and spawning was confirmed around the full moon and the last quarter moon. Age determination using sectioned otoliths revealed that ages ranged from 0 to 34 years and the majority was ≥ 3 years. Parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function were estimated to be L  = 270 mm, k = 0.40, and t 0  = ?0.48 years for females, and 257 mm, 0.44, and ?0.42 years for males. Initial growth was rapid during the first 3 years, attaining over 200 mm for both sexes, and then females grew larger than males. Sizes (ages) at the first sexual maturity were 225 mm (4 years) for females and 207 mm (3 years) for males. The wide range of age composition in catch with majority of ≥3 years old implied that the current fishing effort to harvest was not sufficiently large enough to collapse the stock immediately.  相似文献

This study provides information on the seasonal occurrence, length‐width relationship, sexual development and size at first maturity of the critically endangered Brazilian guitarfish Pseudobatos horkelii in southeastern Brazil. Samples were obtained from September 2007 to August 2009 from commercial fisheries off São Paulo State coast at depths of 10–50 m, with net mesh sizes of 150 mm in the main net and 100 mm in the cod end. A total of 143 specimens (71 males, 72 females) were analyzed. Total length (TL), disc width (DW), sex and reproductive variables were recorded for each individual. Pseudobatos horkelii presents sexual dimorphism in length‐width relationships, with females attaining larger TL and DW. Females also mature at a larger TL, at 81.1% of the maximum TL, while males mature at 67.8% of the maximum TL. No specimens were captured in winter, and only a small sample size was observed in autumn. Males captured in spring and summer presented semen in the seminal vesicle, indicating that this species may reproduce in the warmer months, as already observed for other Rhinobatidae as well as for P. horkelii in southern Brazil.  相似文献

The rock cod Patagonotothen ramsayi (Regan 1913) is the most abundant species of the genus Patagonotothen, occurring along the Patagonian shelf. It plays an important role in the demersal food web both as prey and predator, showing an increasing importance for the local finfish and squid trawl fisheries. Age structure and the reproductive traits were investigated from the population inhabiting the eastern shelf of Burdwood Bank, which represents the southernmost area of its geographical distribution. Adult specimens of P. ramsayi were collected during bottom trawling carried out in the austral summer. The specimens were aged by otolith readings, and their reproductive characteristics were assessed by macroscopical and histological analyses. Age was similar between sexes, ranging from 4 to 7 and from 4 to 8 years in males and females of comparable size, respectively. GSI was relatively low in females (<1.5 %), as fish were sampled far from the reported spawning season (June–August). Females were all in the early developing stage (III) on the macroscopic maturity scale, with the most advanced oocytes being in early vitellogenesis. The oocyte size distribution was bi-modal, with two partially overlapping modes consisting of oocytes of a maximum size of 0.66 mm. A few large atretic oocytes (diameter > 1 mm) were found in three females. Absolute fecundity ranged from approximately 30 to 120 thousands of eggs. No relationship was found between female size and fecundity, probably due to the relatively narrow range of the investigated fish sizes. Males were in the spent (VII) or resting (II) stages.  相似文献

Of the 70 specimens of the lantern shark,Etmopterus unicolor, collected in Suruga Bay and adjacent waters 22.9% were abnormal hermaphrodites, 30.0% normal males, and 47.1% normal females. Fifteen hermaphrodites had female reproductive organs composed of normal ovaries, oviducts, nidamentai glands and uteri as well as claspers. The clasper lengths of these hermaphrodites increased rapidly after the sharks reached 510 mm TL, the length about equal to the size at maturity for normal females. The ovary and uterus of abnormal females became mature at a total length greater than 500 mm, whereas the size at maturity was about 500 mm TL for normal females compared to 460 mm TL for normal males. In one specimen, the left gonad contained both ovarian and testicular tissues, the bulk of which was testicular.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Odontostilbe pequira was studied aiming to determining differences in population structure, reproductive tactics and correlating the reproductive period with rainfall, temperature and level of the Paraguay River, in the southern Pantanal, Brazil. Data were obtained for 623 individuals (366 females and 257 males), and of these, 253 females and 126 males were dissected for reproductive analysis. No significant variation was observed in the distribution of standard length and total weight between the sexes. The sex ratio was 1.42:1 (female: male), but the ratio did not differ over most months and between most length classes. The reproductive period was long (10 months). No correlation was found between the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of both sexes with water temperature and rainfall over the months analyzed. Males showed no significant association between the GSI and river level, but a marginally significant correlation was observed for females. Moreover, an effect of the mean historical river level on GSI was observed in both sexes, indicating that the flooding regime drive the reproductive activity, which proportions spawnings even when rainfall and temperature levels are low. Length at first maturity of the females was 24.2 mm and of the males 22.2 mm, with a significant difference between the sexes. The mean absolute fecundity was 181.4 oocytes/female, while mean relative fecundity was 0.544 oocytes/mg. Absolute fecundity was positively related to total weight, gonad weight and standard length. The mean diameter of the mature oocytes was 0.46 mm and the frequency distribution of the diameters showed various modes, indicating a multiple spawning. Thus, the reproductive tactics of O. pequira was characterized as “opportunistic strategist”, with reproductive activity strongly associated with the flood pulse.  相似文献

Specimens of Raja clavata were monthly collected at the coast of Havaalan? (Trabzon/Turkey) from January 2009 to December 2009 at depths between 20 and 40?m. A total of 230 individuals of thornback ray (131 females and 99 males) were collected by bottom trawls during research cruises. Using logistic regression, it was determined that TL at 50% maturity of males was 718?mm TL and of females 746?mm TL. The ovarian fecundity ranged from 27 to 60 yellow follicles in both ovaries. Females carrying egg cases were found in July and October. Variations in the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices indicated a continuous reproductive cycle during the year.  相似文献

Apristurus brunneus, A. kampae, and Parmaturus xaniurus were caught by trawl and longline between Washington and southern California (48°N to 32°N latitude) from June 2001 through October 2004. In females, oviducal gland width increased with TL in all three species but remained within 4 to 6% of TL. Oocyte diameter increased with TL during reproductive development in all species, and continued to increase with size after reproductive maturity was reached. The weight-length relationships differed significantly among species but not between sexes of any species from the eastern North Pacific combined. Using logistic regression, it was determined that total length at 50% maturity (TL50) of A. brunneus males was 514 mm TL and all A. brunneus males were mature at 547 mm TL. Female A. brunneus reached TL50 at 501 mm TL and all female A. brunneus were mature at 581 mm TL. Apristurus kampae males and females reached TL50 at approximately 485 mm TL and 490 mm TL, respectively. Parmaturus xaniurus males reached TL50 at 444 mm TL and females at 501 mm TL. Gravid female A. brunneus were found in all months of the year, but gravid P. xaniurus were found primarily June through September. Adult A. kampae females were found only in July through November and there were gravid females in all these months. Based upon gonadosomatic indices, I G, these species may mate within a defined period of time (April through June); however, A. brunneus appear to reproduce throughout the year and P. xaniurus reproduce within a defined season (approximately July through September).  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the fanray, Platyrhina sinensis, was examined in Ariake Bay, Japan, from May 2002 until December 2006. Females reached sexual maturity at a larger size than males [total length (TL) at 50% sexual maturity: male, 393 mm; female, 421 mm]. The present data support a distinct annual reproductive cycle for P. sinensis. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) for mature males showed a clear seasonal trend, declining from August to November. Histological observations showed that mature sperm in the testes occurred from August to November when monthly GSI declined. Concomitantly, pre-ovulatory ova were observed in females collected from August to November. These data indicate that mating, ovulation and fertilization occurred from August to November. Near-term embryos, neonates and recent post-partum females also occurred from August to November. Additionally, all post-partum females possessed large pre-ovulatory ova. Parturition occurred from August to November followed immediately by mating, ovulation and fertilization. Mature females become pregnant every year, and the gestation period is almost 1 year. Fertilized uterine eggs without macroscopic embryonic development were present throughout the annual reproductive cycle, indicating that P. sinensis utilizes embryonic diapause as its reproductive strategy. Both reproductive tracts of females were functional, and fecundity ranged from 1 to 12 with a mean of 6.0, increasing with TL.  相似文献

Initial studies on the reproductive parameters and spawning behaviour of racer goby Neogobius gymnotrachelus, one of three Ponto‐Caspian gobiid species recently invading Polish waters, were carried out in W?oc?awski Reservoir (lower River Vistula, Poland), where spawning lasted from April to August. Males were on average about 23.3% longer and 53.8% heavier than females. The smallest female with mature gonads was 58 mm TL (estimated age 2+ years), and males were sexually mature at 59 mm TL (age of 1+ years). Gonado‐somatic index at the beginning of spawning was seven times larger in females (mean = 8.4) than that in males (mean = 1.2). Mean absolute fecundity was 952 eggs per female (361–2236). Egg diameter ranged from 0.140 to 1.558 mm, being of bi‐modal distribution, which suggests two or three spawning bouts. Length–frequency analysis of juveniles revealed a multimodal distribution. Specialized reproductive behaviour (nest construction and parental care of eggs) and an extended spawning period increase the probability that racer goby can successfully establish self‐sustaining populations in novel environments.  相似文献

The Mediterranean tooth carp Aphanius fasciatus, a strongly eurythermic and euryhaline species, is an important component of the ichthyofauna in the valley of Oued Righ, situated in Algerian low Sahara. This study aims to understand the life history of this species in arid environment. A total of 1868 individuals (16.7–60.2 mm TL, 0.04–26.8 g TW) were collected between November 2010 and November 2011 from Ayata Lake (Algerian low Sahara). Individual age was determined by scalimetry. Some aspects of the sexual cycle are studied. The population was composed of 6 age classes in both sexes. Back-calculations of total length-at-age were suitably adjusted to von Bertalanffy growth model with: Lt?=?80.00 [1?e?0.172 (t + 1.377)] for females and Lt?=?77.58 [1?e?0.138 (t + 2.236)] for males. The fitted total length-total weight relationship was W?=?0.013 L2.848 for females, W?=?0.013 L2.809 for males. Spawning occurs once a year between February and July with peak activity in May for Females and in April for Males. Gonado-somatic index reaches a maximum of 4.16% in males and 15.73% in females. The length at the first sexual maturity is 45 mm for both sexes.  相似文献

The average age at sexual maturity (ASM) is an important parameter for evaluating the reproductive potential or status of a population. South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens in Patagonia (Argentina) were exploited and reduced to less than 10% of pre-exploitation numbers. At present, the population is recovering at a rate of 6%. In this paper, we studied growth and age at sexual maturity of South American sea lions in the south-western south Atlantic by examining 219 individuals (females and males) collected between 1989-2008. Individuals were aged by counting growth layer groups in tooth sections, standard body length was measured and male and female reproductive organs were examined macroscopically and histologically to establish individual sexual maturity. Maximum recorded length for males and females was 264 cm and 200 cm, respectively, and maximum ages 19 and 21 yrs. ASM defined as the age where 50% of females are mature, was estimated at 4.8±0.5 years old, corresponding to a mean SL of 147 cm, about 81% of their asymptotic length. First observed ovulation occurred during the 4th year, first birth may occur between 4 and 5 years old. Males physiologically mature between 4-6 years, but the size of the testes shows that all males became sexually mature by the age of 9 years when they reach a mean SL of 212 cm, about 86% of their asymptotic body length. The present information on ASM and growth of O. flavescens will improve the development of population dynamics models, to investigate the impact of recovering sea lions populations on its marine environment, as well as its trophic interactions with commercial fisheries.  相似文献

The reproductive features of Spondyliosoma cantharus were studied in the Gulf of Tunis to contribute to better fisheries management on a regional scale and to broaden knowledge on whether there are actual performance differences compared to others areas. A total of 369 fish were caught by trammel and gill nets in the Gulf of Tunis from January 2005 to June 2006. Sex‐ratio, gonad maturation, size and age at maturity, sexual cycle, condition and reproductive strategy were determined. The male : female ratio was initially skewed in favour of females, with males predominating in larger sizes. Length of females at first maturity was 17.8 cm TL (n = 141), which corresponds to 4 years of age. A recommendation is made to increase the length at capture. Spawning season extends from January to May, with a peak in March–April correlated to the lowest sea surface temperatures (14.8–15.6°C); during this period, a dichromatism arises between males and females. The hepatosomatic index and the condition factor present significant monthly changes in relation to the breeding activity. The bimodal size frequency distribution, the biased sex ratio, and the presence of bisexual gonads outline a protogynous hermaphroditism; diandry should be confirmed.  相似文献

Age and growth estimates for the smooth skate, Malacoraja senta, were derived from 306 vertebral centra from skates caught in the North Atlantic off the coast of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, USA. Males and females were aged to 15 and 14 years, respectively. Male and female growth diverged at both ends of the data range and the sexes required different growth functions to describe them. Males followed a traditional growth scenario and were best described by a von Bertalanffy curve with a set L o (11 cm TL) where L inf  = 75.4 cm TL, K = 0.12. Females required the use of back-calculated values to account for a lack of small individuals, using these data they were best described by a von Bertalanffy curve where growth parameters derived from vertebral length-at-age data are L inf  = 69.6 cm TL, K = 0.12, and L o  = 10.  相似文献

Weakfish Cynoscion regalis were collected from commercial fisheries in the Chesapeake Bay and the Middle Atlantic Bight (n=4380) during 1989–1992 and their reproductive biology assessed using the gonadosomatic index, macroscopic gonad stages, oocyte diameter distributions, microscopic whole oocyte analysis and histology. Sex ratios were approximately 3:1, females to males, in 1990–1992. Most fish (90%) attained sexual maturity by age 1 and at a small size. Estimated mean length at first maturity was: 164mm total length (TL) for males, and 170 mm TL for females. Weakfish spawn within the Chesapeake Bay, as far north as the Virginia/ Maryland border. Although spawning occurred during May–August and gonad development and initiation of spawning was synchronous, cessation of spawning was asynchronous. There was no indication that older fish exhibited a more extended spawning season than younger fish. Weakfish are multiple spawners with indeterminate fecundity. Oocyte development is asynchronous with oocytes of all stages being present in developed ovaries. Because of the complex and dynamic weakfish ovarian cycle, typical methods of assessing reproduction, such as the GSI and macroscopic gonad stages, are inadequate for this species if not used in conjunction with more detailed methods such as histology.  相似文献
