Nutrient dynamics of large grassland ecosystems possessing abundant migratory grazers are poorly understood. We examined N cycling on the northern winter range of Yellowstone National Park, home for large herds of free-roaming elk (Cervus elaphus) and bison (Bison bison). Plant and soil N, net N mineralization, and the deposition of ungulate fecal-N were measured at five sites, a ridgetop, mid-slope bench, steep slope, valley-bottom bench, and riparian area, within a watershed from May, 1991 to April, 1992.Results indicated similarities between biogeochemical properties of Yellowstone grassland and other grassland ecosystems: (1) landscape position and soil water affected nutrient dynamics, (2) annual mineralization was positively related to soil N content, and (3) the proportion of soil N mineralized during the year was negatively related to soil C/N.Grazers were a particularly important component of the N budget of this grassland. Estimated rates of N flow from ungulates to the soil ranged from 8.1 to 45.6 kg/ha/yr at the sites (average = 27.0 kg/ha/yr), approximately 4.5 times the amount of N in senescent plants. Rates of nitrogen mineralization for Yellowstone northern range grassland were higher than those measured in other temperate grassland ecosystems, possibly due to grazers promoting N cycling in Yellowstone.  相似文献

Geothermal systems in Yellowstone National Park (YNP) provide an outstanding opportunity to understand the origin and evolution of metabolic processes necessary for life in extreme environments including low pH, high temperature, low oxygen and elevated concentrations of reduced iron. Previous phylogenetic studies of acidic ferric iron mats from YNP have revealed considerable diversity of uncultivated and undescribed archaea. The goal of this study was to obtain replicate de novo genome assemblies for a dominant archaeal population inhabiting acidic iron-oxide mats in YNP. Detailed analysis of conserved ribosomal and informational processing genes indicates that the replicate assemblies represent a new candidate phylum within the domain Archaea referred to here as ‘Geoarchaeota'' or ‘novel archaeal group 1 (NAG1)''. The NAG1 organisms contain pathways necessary for the catabolism of peptides and complex carbohydrates as well as a bacterial-like Form I carbon monoxide dehydrogenase complex likely used for energy conservation. Moreover, this novel population contains genes involved in the metabolism of oxygen including a Type A heme copper oxidase, a bd-type terminal oxidase and a putative oxygen-sensing protoglobin. NAG1 has a variety of unique bacterial-like cofactor biosynthesis and transport genes and a Type3-like CRISPR system. Discovery of NAG1 is critical to our understanding of microbial community structure and function in extant thermophilic iron-oxide mats of YNP, and will provide insight regarding the evolution of Archaea in early Earth environments that may have important analogs active in YNP today.  相似文献

Using massively parallel sequencing (the Roche 454 platform) we have studied the diversity of archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequences in oxic and anoxic sediments at six sites in Lake Baikal with oil- and gas-bearing fluids discharge. Archaeal communities appeared to be represented mainly by five phyla: Euryarchaeota, Crenarchaeota, Thaumarchaeota, Bathyarchaeota (miscellaneous Crenarchaeotic group), and Woesearchaeota (deep sea hydrothermal vent group 6). Among them we detected sequences of methanogens of the orders Methanomicrobiales, Methanosarsinales, Methanococcales, as well as representatives of the following uncultured archaeal lineages: Group C3, Marine Benthic Group D, and Terrestrial Miscellaneous Group. We have also identified sequences of ammonia-oxidizing archaea of the phyla Crenarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota. Phylogenetic analysis showed the presence ANME-2d-related sequences. However, the analysis of mcrA genes libraries has not revealed typical representatives of ANME groups. Comparison of amplicon libraries 16S rRNA gene fragments from different samples proved the widespread presence of previously detected Baikal archaeal lineages, which are members of the phylum Crenarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota (formerly Group C3 of Crenarchaeota).  相似文献

从新疆南部的阿牙克库木湖采集了19个水样和15个土样,分离培养嗜盐微生物。采用PCR方法获取其中62株嗜盐古菌16S rRNA基因序列。序列分析结果表明,分离到的菌株分属6个属,占已报道嗜盐古菌属总数的27%,其中以Halorubrum和Natrinema属的菌株为优势菌株。通过Shannon多样性指数分析发现,阿牙克库木湖冬春两季嗜盐古菌多样性差异不明显。研究还发现4个嗜盐古菌新物种,表明阿牙克库木湖蕴藏着具有地域特点的嗜盐古菌资源。  相似文献

Thermal waters in the Yellowstone Park, WY, USA, ecosystem have created a diverse array of extreme microbial habitats. Microbial ecology studies have begun to show the diversity of extremophiles present. Focusing attention on use of a variety of collection sites, sampled materials, approaches to preservation immediately after collection, pretreatments and, perhaps most importantly, media components, will ensure a greater range of organisms in a culture collection. The objective here is to review methods for cultivating extremophiles from Yellowstone geothermal habitats.  相似文献

We studied how ungulates and a large variation in site conditions influenced grassland nitrogen (N) dynamics in Yellowstone National Park. In contrast to most grassland N studies that have examined one or two soil N processes, we investigated four rates, net N mineralization, nitrification, denitrification, and inorganic N leaching, at seven paired sites inside and outside long-term (33+ year) exclosures. Our focus was how N fluxes were related to one another among highly variable grasslands and how grazers influenced those relationships. In addition, we examined variation in soil δ15N among grasslands and the relationships between soil 15N abundance and N processes. Previously, ungulates were reported to facilitate net N mineralization across variable Yellowstone grasslands and denitrification at mesic sites. In this study, we found that herbivores also promoted nitrification among diverse grasslands. Furthermore, net N mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification (kg N ha–1 year–1, each variable) were postively and linearly related to one another among all grasslands (grazed and fenced), and grazers reduced the nitrification/net N mineralization and denitrification/net N mineralization ratios, indicating that ungulates inhibited the proportion of available NH4 + that was nitrified and denitrified. There was no relationship between net N mineralization or nitrification with leaching (indexed by inorganic N adsorbed to resin buried at the bottom of rooting zones) and leaching was unaffected by grazers. Soil δ15N was positively and linearly related to in situ net N mineralization and nitrification in ungrazed grasslands; however, there was no relationship between isotopic composition of N and those rates among grazed grasslands. The results suggested that grazers simultaneously increased N availability (stimulated net N mineralization and nitrification per unit area) and N conservation (reduced N loss from the soil per unit net N mineralization) in Yellowstone grasslands. Grazers promoted N retention by stimulating microbial productivity, probably caused by herbivores promoting labile soil C. Process-level evidence for N retention by grazers was supported by soil δ15N data. Grazed grassland with high rates of N cycling had substantially lower soil δ15N relative to values expected for ungrazed grassland with comparable net N mineralization and nitrification rates. These soil 15N results suggest that ungulates inhibited N loss at those sites. Such documented evidence for consumer control of N availability to plants, microbial productivity, and N retention in Yellowstone Park is further testimony for the widespread regulation of grassland processes by large herbivores. Abstract: Increases in Yellowstone National Park, USA, bison (Bison bison) numbers and shifts in seasonal distribution have resulted in more frequent movements of bison beyond park boundaries and development of an interagency management plan for the Yellowstone bison population. Implementation of the plan under the adaptive management paradigm requires an understanding of the spatial and temporal structure of the population. We used polythetic agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis of radiolocations obtained from free-ranging bison to investigate seasonal movements and aggregations. We classified radiolocations into 4 periods: annual, peak rut (15 Jul-15 Sep), extended rut (1 Jun-31 Oct), and winter (1 Nov-31 May). We documented spatial separation of Yellowstone bison into 2 segments, the northern and central herds, during all periods. The estimated year-round exchange rate (4.85-5.83%) of instrumented bison varied with the fusion strategy employed. We did not observe exchange between the 2 segments during the peak rut and it varied during the extended rut (2.15-3.23%). We estimated a winter exchange of 4.85-7.77%. The outcome and effectiveness of management actions directed at Yellowstone bison may be affected by spatial segregation and herd affinity within the population. Reductions based on total population size, but not applied to the entire population, may adversely affect one herd while having little effect on the other. Similarly, management actions targeting a segment of the population may benefit from the spatial segregation exhibited.  相似文献

2005年6-7月在抚仙湖采集到底栖软体动物7科8属9种,其出现率为70%,分布的最大水深为118 m,平均水深为31 m,分布区内的平均密度为614 ind·m-2,平均生物量为80.64 g·m-2.软体动物主要分布在湖湾,在密度方面,长角涵螺和环棱螺占优势,在生物量方面,河蚬和环棱螺占优势.现存量分布北区大于南区,沿岸区大于湖心区,水草区大于无草区.软体动物密度分布主要受湖底理化性质影响,与表层水体营养水平相关关系不显著.  相似文献

Abstract: Understanding the relative importance of density-dependent and density-independent feedback on population growth is essential for developing management strategies to conserve wildlife. We examined a 99-year time series of annual counts and removals for 2 bison (Bison bison) herds occupying northern and central Yellowstone National Park in the western United States. Yellowstone's aggressive management intervention effectively recovered bison from 46 animals in 1902 to > 1,500 animals in 1954. Supplemental feeding of the northern herd facilitated rapid growth (r = 0.16) during 1902 to 1952. Augmentation of the central herd with 71 animals also led to rapid growth over 1936 to 1954 (r = 0.10). In 1969, manipulative management ceased in the park, and we detected evidence of density-dependent changes in population growth rates for both herds during 1970 to 2000 as numbers increased to >3,000 animals. The central herd showed evidence of a constant density-dependent response over 1970 to 2000. In contrast, density dependence had a stronger effect on the northern herd's growth rate during 1970 to 1981 than during 1982 to 2000. We found evidence to suggest that these trends resulted from pulses of emigration from the central herd to the northern range beginning in 1982 in response to resource limitation generated by an interaction between density and severe snow pack. Corroborative evidence supporting this interpretation included 1) the annual growth of the central herd was negatively correlated with snow pack but that of the northern herd was not, 2) growth rates of the central and northern herds were uncorrelated during 1970 to 1981 but significantly and negatively correlated during 1982 to 2000, and 3) the northern herd could not have sustained the high removals experienced during 1984 to 2000 without immigration. Density-related emigration from the central herd to the northern range may be fueling bison emigration onto private and public lands where large-scale removals occur, exacerbating the brucellosis controversy for natural resource managers.  相似文献

Bison (Bison bison) and elk (Cervus elaphus) of the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) are the last remaining reservoirs of bovine brucellosis (Brucella abortus) in the United States. An important factor in evaluating the risk of transmission to cattle is the persistence of bacteria and infectious birth materials shed on pastures where cattle graze. We selected 2 study areas near the northern and western boundaries of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) to determine the persistence of bacteria on fetal tissue, soil, and vegetation, and scavenging on infectious materials from birth and abortion sites. We performed 3 independent field experiments to determine: 1) persistence of Brucella abortus (RB51) purposely applied to fetal tissues, 2) scavenging of fetuses by native scavengers, and 3) natural contamination of birth or abortion sites in the GYA. Results from these field experiments established that Brucella bacteria can persist on fetal tissues and soil or vegetation for 21–81 days depending on month, temperature, and exposure to sunlight. Bacteria purposely applied to fetal tissues persisted longer in February than May and did not survive on tissues beyond 10 June regardless of when they were set out. Brucella abortus field strain persisted up to 43 days on soil and vegetation at naturally contaminated bison birth or abortion sites. Fetuses were scavenged by a variety of birds and mammals in areas near YNP and more rapidly inside YNP than outside the Park boundary. Models derived from our data determined a 0.05% chance of bacterial survival beyond 26 days (95% Credible Interval of 18–30 days) for a contamination event in May. May 15 is the final date for hazing all bison into Yellowstone National Park under the current interagency bison management plan. With these data managers can predict when it is safe to graze cattle onto pastures previously occupied by bison. © 2011 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The conservation of bison (Bison bison) from near extinction to >4,000 animals in Yellowstone National Park has led to conflict regarding overabundance and potential transmission of brucellosis (Brucella abortus) to cattle. We estimated survival and birth rates from 53 radiocollared adult female bison during 1995–2001, and we used calf:adult (C:A) ratios to estimate reproduction with the combined effects of pregnancy, fetal loss, and neonatal mortality during 1970–1997. Annual survival of adult females was high (0.92; 95% CI = 0.87-0.95) and constant. Birth rates differed by brucellosis status and age. Birth rates were 0.40 calves per female (95% CI = 0.15-0.65) for brucellosis-positive 3 year olds, 0.63 (95% CI = 0.39-0.87) for individuals testing negative, and 0.10 (95% CI = 0.00-0.24) for individuals contracting brucellosis that birth year (sero-converters). Birth rates were 0.64 (95% CI = 0.52-0.76) for brucellosis-positive individuals ≥4 years old, 0.81 (95% CI = 0.73-0.89) for brucellosis-negative individuals, and 0.22 (95% CI = 0.00-0.46) for sero-converters. Spring C:A ratios were negatively correlated with snow pack (β = −0.01 to −0.03, R2 = 0.26-0.60, P < 0.05). Growth rate was highly elastic to adult survival (0.51), and juvenile survival (0.36) was 3 times more elastic than fecundity (0.12). Simulations suggested brucellosis eradication via vaccination would result in increased birth rates and a 29% increase in population growth (γ = 1.09), possibly leading to more bison movements outside the park. Our results will help park managers evaluate bison population dynamics and explore consequences of management actions and disease control programs.  相似文献

Yellowstone National Park poses critical issues in biology and philosophy. Among these are (1) how to value nature, especially at the ecosystem level, and whether to let nature take its course or employ hands-on scientific management; (2) the meaning of natural as this operates in park policy; (3) establishing biological claims on th scale of regional systems; (4) the interplay of natural and cultural history, involving both native and European Americans; (5) and sociopolitical forces as determinants in biological discovery. Alston Chase's strident Playing God in Yellowstone is critized and used as a test of David Hull's naturalistic philosophy of biology. This study documents for the first time both vertical and horizontal distribution patterns of the zooplankton community in Lake Kinneret during the period of thermal stratification. The zooplankton distribution patterns were explored in relation to abiotic (temperature, oxygen) and biotic (picocyanobacteria, ciliates, flagellates, phytoplankton, fish) environmental gradients. Sampling was carried out on 6–7 July 1992 at five stations and six depths from nearshore to offshore. Zooplankton abundance and biomass varied from 5 to 267 ind. l–1(mean: 95 ind. l–1), and from 0.1 to 65 d.w. mg m–3(mean: 24 d.w. mg m–3). Zooplankton taxonomic groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, Cyclopoida, Calanoida) and size classes (micro-, meso- and macrozooplankton) showed peaks of maximal density and biomass in the epilimnetic and metalimnetic strata (5 and 14 m). Depth, accounting for 31–39% of total spatial variation, reflected the vertical distribution of zooplankton in relation to temperature and oxygen declines, and the higher concentration of food resources (protists and phytoplankton) in the epilimnion and metalimnion. Onshore–offshore distance, accounting for 17–22% of the total spatial variance, reflected different distribution patterns shown among zooplankton groups and size classes. The macrozooplankton (Copepoda, Cladocera) was more abundant offshore, whereas microzooplankton (Rotifera and nauplii) predominated nearshore. These horizontal distribution patterns were related to small increases in temperature and phytoplankton biomass, and higher concentrations of fish in the littoral zone. Although limited to a short temporal scale, our study indicated that zooplankton spatial distribution in Lake Kinneret during the period of thermal stratification was related to physicochemical, food and predation factors, manifested differently along the vertical and nearshore–offshore gradients.  相似文献

以青海省三角城种羊场地区典型的芨芨草草原为研究对象,采用相邻格子样方法取样,应用方差/均值比率法、负二项参数(K);扩散系数(C);C ass ie指标(CA);丛生指标(I)和聚块性指标(m*/m)等指标,比较了青海湖地区围栏内、外芨芨草群落主要种群的空间分布格局。结果表明,围栏内芨芨草群落优势种群的空间格局除多裂蒲公英为随机分布外,其余均为聚集分布;围栏外除西伯利亚蓼外,其余种群也全部为聚集分布,而且围栏外种群的聚集强度大于围栏内。物种的这种分布格局主要与物种本身的生态和生物学特性有关。  相似文献

鄱阳湖湖泊细菌群落组成及结构——以松门山为例   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
于2011年5月在鄱阳湖——松门山湖区采集底泥与表层水样,分别提取了表层水体浮游和底泥微生物基因组DNA,利用454高通量测序技术对细菌的16S rRNA基因进行了序列测定,分析了湖泊底泥细菌、水体浮游细菌群落结构特征。结果显示:底泥细菌OTUs(Operational Taxonomic Units)为1454,表层水体浮游细菌OTUs为269;底泥细菌群落比表层水体更加多样化,底泥细菌的物种数大大多于表层水体。同时,底泥细菌群落与表层浮游细菌群落结构存在显著差异。物种分类显示鄱阳湖底泥细菌种类隶属于20门,228属,其中优势种群为δ-变形菌纲(Deltaproteobacteria)、β-变形菌纲(Betaproteobacteria)和疣微菌门(Verrucomicrobia);表层水体浮游细菌隶属于13门116属,优势种群为β-变形菌纲、拟杆菌门(Bacteroidetes)和放线菌门(Actinobacteria)。结果进一步揭示,无论是浮游细菌群落还是沉积物细菌群落,优势细菌种群的基因型多样性更高。  相似文献

2005年6—7月在抚仙湖共采集到摇蚊科幼虫5属6种,其中花纹前突摇蚊和羽摇蚊为优势种,两者的相对密度之和达94.9%,相对生物量之和达97.5%,其现存量基本代表了抚仙湖中摇蚊幼虫的现存量.全湖摇蚊幼虫平均密度为(275±333) ind·m-2,平均生物量为(0.642±0.763) g·m-2.花纹前突摇蚊为全湖性分布,羽摇蚊主要分布在明星鱼洞以南湖区,其他种类为局部性分布.小突摇蚊为典型的深水贫营养型种类,其分布的平均水深达107.2 m.抚仙湖摇蚊幼虫密度分布与水深呈极显著正相关(P<0.001),与底质和水草的关系为沙砾石底<沙泥底<细泥底;水草区<非水草区.与1980年前后的调查资料相比,摇蚊幼虫的出现率和现存量显著增加,并出现了典型富营养型的指示种羽摇蚊,表明抚仙湖水体的营养水平在提高.  相似文献

鄱阳湖是中国第一大淡水湖,具有"丰水为湖,枯水为河"的独特特点。为探讨鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物群落结构及其时空分布的特征,于2009年全年采集其不同季节、不同水位期的浮游甲壳动物样品进行定量分析。结果显示,鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物群落结构总体与河流浮游甲壳群落具有相似性。无节幼体、象鼻溞、剑水蚤等河流优势类群在鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物中占优势;而哲水蚤和溞属仅在低水位季节占优势,枝角类丰度仅在高温、高水位、流速缓的季节高过桡足类。丰水期浮游甲壳动物平均丰度和生物量远远高于枯水期,可达枯水期的50倍,差异极其显著(P0.01)。温度和水位变化引起的环境因子改变是导致鄱阳湖浮游甲壳动物发生季节演替的主要原因;而营养盐对浮游甲壳动物的影响并不显著。空间上浮游甲壳动物群落构成明显不同,年均丰度最高和最低的点均出现在河口地区。因此:对于换水周期短,水交换速率快的水体,应该充分考虑水文条件对生物的影响。  相似文献

为了解滆湖大型底栖动物群落结构特征及其与环境因子的关系,于2013—2014年对滆湖20个采样点的大型底栖动物按季节进行了8次调查,同时对14项水环境指标进行了逐月监测.结果表明: 共采集到大型底栖动物25种,其中软体动物3种,占12%,摇蚊幼虫12种,占48%,寡毛类4种,占16%,甲壳类4种,占16%.优势种为霍甫水丝蚓、苏氏尾鳃蚓、中国长足摇蚊和太湖裸须摇蚊.摇蚊幼虫和寡毛类存在显著的空间和季节变化.氮、磷营养元素和水温对滆湖水域环境状况有较大影响,且总氮(TN)、硝态氮(NO3--N)和溶解氧(DO)均表现出显著的空间和季节变化.相关性分析表明,TN和NO3--N是影响滆湖大型底栖动物群落结构的主要水环境因子,环境变量可以较好地解释主要类群的变化.  相似文献
