The influence of the Ob River runoff in its lower reaches on the radial growth of main forest-forming tree species-the Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.), Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour.), and larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.)-was studied in the north of Western Siberia in various test sites both at the riverside and at a distance of 3 to 80 km from the Ob River floodplain. Differences in responses of the radial growth to air temperature in October and repeated frost damage of tree annual rings are observed in the Siberian spruce and Siberian stone pine depending on the distance from the river. The correlations of the radial growth of trees and frost damage with the effect of the Ob River runoff are discussed.  相似文献

Trends in air temperature and precipitation in the forest‐steppe ecotone of the western Khentey, northern Mongolia were studied and related to stem increment and shoot water relations in Mongolia's most common tree species, Siberian larch (Larix sibirica). The area has been subject to a significant increase of summer temperature and a decrease of summer precipitation during the last 47 years. Tree‐ring width series from >400 larch trees show a strongly decreasing annual increment since the 1940s. The onset of this decrease is independent of the age of the trees and, therefore, can be attributed to the increasing aridity in the 20th century. Simultaneously to the declining annual increment, regeneration of Siberian larch decreased as well; today regeneration is virtually lacking in the larch forests on mountain slopes of the western Khentey. Measurements of shoot water potentials during the growing season exhibited daily minimum water potentials close to the point of zero turgor for extended periods. The drought stress indicated by these results is in line with the current low annual increment. Trees in the forest interior were more severely stressed and grow more slowly than trees at the forest line to steppe. This is attributable to the recent increase in aridity, as the stand density and probably also the trees themselves in the forest interior are adapted to moister conditions, whereas the trees at the forest edge have always been exposed to a more extreme microclimate. The progressing increase in aridity during the 21st century that is predicted for the western Khentey, suggests a future decline of larch forests. A widespread increase of aridity predicted for most parts of the Mongolian forest belt, suggests even a supra‐regional decline of larch.  相似文献

Measurements of water oxygen isotopic composition were conducted in the 2003 growing season for a montane larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) forest in northern Mongolia, a transitional area from the south Siberian taiga to the Asian steppe. Oxygen isotopic composition of foliar water and its daily variability were found to be sensitive to atmospheric evaporative demand. During most of the growing season, water sources used by larch trees were from the upper 30-cm surface layer of the soil when precipitation input was large, and were from the deeper layer when the water supply at the upper soil layer was limited. The Keeling plot method suggested that the forest returned soil water to the atmosphere predominantly by means of canopy transpiration during the peak growth period (in August).  相似文献

Remote sensing with time series data offers considerable potential in the trajectory of post forest fire dynamics beyond the current monitoring of structural attributes that are displayed in the post-fire area. Many studies have addressed this topic by using time series remote sensing indices; however, this approach has sometimes been demonstrated as an unrealistic and biased representation of the post-fire forest patterns due to the saturation issues of vegetation indices. These saturation issues then lead to an underestimation of the forest successional stages and an overestimation of the forest recovery rate. This paper aims to develop a framework for trajectory of the post-fire forest patterns in the Siberian boreal larch forest (Larix sibirica) with the synergistic use of different remote sensing based vegetation-cover indicators derived from the Landsat time series and the WorldView-2 images. A time-series of the forest recovery index (FRI) and fractional vegetation cover (FVC) has been analyzed to estimate the rates of forest regeneration and vegetation recovery across different burn severity levels in the Siberian larch forest. The results showed that the FRI method can be used to observe the regrowth of the larch forest from the tenth year after the fire overlapping with the period of significant increase in the sapling stem volume. The post-fire larch forest canopy can fully recover to the pre-fire condition with respect to the magnitude of the FRI values after 30–47 years where the highest regeneration rate was observed in the moderate burn severity areas followed by the low and high burn severity. On the other hand, the FVC method was positively correlated with burn severity and more sensitive for evaluating the early stages of the forest succession in which the FVC dramatically increases after 5–6 years after the fire. The significant growth of FVC was accentuated by the maximum emergence of the sapling density as well as the rapid growth of herbaceous plants, grasses, shrubs, and shade-intolerant trees immediately after the fire, which could not be evaluated using the FRI. Both time series of the FRI and the FVC are valuable tools for determining the dominant stages of the post-fire larch forest succession in order to understand the relationships between fire disturbance and natural cycles of the boreal larch forest.  相似文献

The paper presents data on individual variability of Siberian larch cones in the shelter belts in Shira steppe in Khakassia depending on the scheme of planting and design of the forest shelter belt. According to their color, three forms of cones are revealed: green, red, and transitional. The technical germinating capacity and quality of seeds from different forms of cones are determined.  相似文献

The genetic mechanisms underlying the relationship of individual heterozygosity (IndHet) with heterosis and homeostasis are not fully understood. Such an understanding, however, would have enormous value as it could be used to identify trees better adapted to environmental stress. Dendrochronology data, in particular the individual average radial increment growth of wood measured as the average tree ring width (AvTRW) and the variance of tree ring width (VarTRW) were used as proxies for heterosis (growth rate measured as AvTRW) and homeostasis (stability of the radial growth of individual trees measured as VarTRW), respectively. These traits were then used to test the hypothesis that IndHet can be used to predict heterosis and homeostasis of individual trees. Wood core and needle samples were collected from 100 trees of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) across two populations located in Eastern Siberia. DNA samples were obtained from the needles of each individual tree and genotyped for eight highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. Then mean IndHet calculated based on the genotypes of eight loci for each tree was correlated with the statistical characteristics of the measured radial growth (AvTRW and VarTRW) and the individual standardized chronologies. The analysis did not reveal significant relationships between the studied parameters. In order to account for the strong dependence of the radial growth on tree age the age curves were examined. An original approach was employed to sort trees into groups based on the distance between these age curves. No relationship was found between these groups and the groups formed based on heterozygosity. However, further work with more genetic markers and increased sample sizes is needed to test this novel approach for estimating heterosis and homeostasis.  相似文献

Androgenesis in vitro in plants is a phenomenon of developmental switching of male generative cells, microspores, from their normal gametophytic to sporophytic pathway. We obtained androgenic callus and embryoids (embryo-like structures derived from microspores) of the conifer plant, Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) in the in vitro culture. The immune-enzyme analysis of the hormonal balance of larch androgenic cultures showed a substantial increase in the content of all phytohormones, especially cytokinins and ABA, as compared with initial explants (microstrobiles). This was evidently related to active cell divisions and embryoid formation. A comparison of androgenic cultures derived from trees nonifested and infested with larch gall midges (Dasineura rozhkovi Mam. et Nik.) revealed a cytokinin content increase (by two times) and an ABA content decrease (by two times), which indicates more intense growth of cultures derived from healthy trees. Phytohormone content in the androgenic callus was compared with their accumulation in the embryos of larch seeds harvested from noninfested trees. We concluded that successful growth of androgenic cultures and embryoid formation demand an additional medium supplement with auxins (not more than 0.5 mg/l).  相似文献

While the forest-tundra zone in Siberia, Russia has been dendroclimatologically well-studied in recent decades, much less emphasis has been given to a wide belt of northern taiga larch forests located to the south. In this study, climate and local site conditions are explored to trace their influence on radial growth of Gmelin larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) trees developed on permafrost soils in the northern taiga. Three dendrochronological sites characterized by great differences in thermo-hydrological regime of soils were established along a short (ca. 100 m long) transect: on a river bank (RB), at riparian zone of a stream (RZ) and on a terrace (TER). Comparative analysis of the rate and year-to-year dynamics of tree radial growth among sites revealed considerable difference in both raw and standardized tree-ring width (TRW) chronologies obtained for the RZ site, characterized by shallow soil active layer depth and saturated soils. Results of dendroclimatic analysis indicated that tree-ring growth at all the sites is mostly defined by climatic conditions of a previous year and precipitation has stronger effect on TRW chronologies in comparison to the air temperatures. Remarkably, a great difference in the climatic response of TRW chronologies has been obtained for trees growing within a very short distance from each other. The positive relation of tree-ring growth with precipitation, and negative to temperature was observed in the dry site RB. In contrary, precipitation negatively and temperature positively influenced tree radial growth of larch at the water saturated RZ. Thus, a complicate response of northern Siberian larch forest productivity to the possible climate changes is expected due to great mosaic of site conditions and variability of environmental factors controlling tree-ring growth at different sites. Our study demonstrates the new possibilities for the future dendroclimatic research in the region, as various climatic parameters can be reconstructed from tree-ring chronologies obtained for different sites.  相似文献

The past and present regeneration of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) was studied in the forest-steppe of the Mongolian Altai, an area which has experienced an increase in annual mean temperature by 2.1 °C since 1940 and is subjected to grazing by mixed herds of livestock owned by pastoral nomads. Past regeneration was reconstructed from tree rings and present regeneration was analyzed by surveying seedlings, sapling-sized trees and the occurrence of viable larch seeds in the soil seed bank. Forest regeneration occurred throughout the twentieth and the early twenty-first centuries in the forest interiors, but ceased after the late 1970s at forest edges. The density of sapling-sized larch trees decreased with livestock density linearly in the interior and exponentially at the edge. Most sapling-sized trees had visible damage from livestock browsing, which also manifested in wood-anatomical anomalies. By contrast, the densities of 1- and 2-year old seedlings increased with livestock density at the forest edge, suggesting that seedlings in this habitat benefitted from the reduction in competition intensity due to livestock grazing. This relationship also suggests that larch seedlings, in contrast to sapling-sized trees, were avoided by the livestock, as otherwise removal by the herbivores should have counteracted the promotion due to reduced competition. Near-consistency of the correlations of total livestock and goat densities with sapling and seedling densities suggests that the control of larch regeneration is primarily a function of goat density, which have tripled in the Mongolian livestock during the past 20 years for economic reasons.  相似文献

Aims The Mongolian Altai is an old settlement area, which is populated by pastoral nomads since 2000–3000 years. Forests in this region (at ca. 2300 m a.s.l.) are highly fragmented and border on steppe and alpine grasslands, which are used for mobile livestock husbandry. The climate in Central Asia is warming to levels clearly above the global average, which affects the vegetation. Furthermore, the transition from planned to market economy and the decollectivization of livestock 20 years ago has strongly changed land use practices in Mongolia, especially resulting in an increase in recent logging activities. We were interested in the question how climate warming and selective logging influence the annual stem growth and the stand structure. Methods The impact of climate and land use by the pastoral nomads on the annual stem increment of more than 1800 trees of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) was analyzed. Different groups of trees with divergent growth trends depending on the social position and stand history were identified by non-metric multidimensional scaling and analysis of similarities. Long-term trends in the annual stem increment were analyzed by establishing separate regional growth curves for trees of different age classes.Important findings Instrumental climate data substantiate an increase of temperature by 2.1°C since 1940 at constant precipitation. Trees benefit from the increased temperatures. Climate–response analysis revealed that radial stem increment was promoted by the temperature in early summer, but also high precipitation in spring and in the year before tree-ring formation. Forest dynamics is also strongly influenced by anthropogenic activities. In addition to the natural forest dynamics, logging resulted in divergent growth trends within given age classes and habitats (forest interior and forest edge); overall, 22 groups of trees with different characteristics in the annual radial stem increment were identified. A tree-ring series-based reconstruction of logging intensity since 1935 suggests that moderate selective logging occurred throughout the study period. However, selective logging was strongly intensified after 1990 as the result of the breakdown of the Communist regime in Mongolia and the transition from centrally planned to market economy. Because tree stump densities showed that the ratio of felled to live trees was 2:1 in the interior or even 0.9:1 at the edges of the forests and most logging occurred during the past 20 years, it must be concluded that the forests of the Mongolian Altai are presently exploited far beyond the level of sustainability. A close correlation of the ratio of felled to live trees with the density of summer camps of pastoral nomads in the vicinity suggests that trees are primarily felled by the local population.  相似文献

The development of dendrochronological time series in order to analyze climate-growth relationships usually involves first a rigorous selection of trees and then the computation of the mean tree-growth measurement series. This study suggests a change in the perspective, passing from an analysis of climate-growth relationships that typically focuses on the mean response of a species to investigating the whole range of individual responses among sample trees. Results highlight that this new approach, tested on a larch and stone pine tree-ring dataset, outperforms, in terms of information obtained, the classical one, with significant improvements regarding the strength, distribution and time-variability of the individual tree-ring growth response to climate. Moreover, a significant change over time of the tree sensitivity to climatic variability has been detected. Accordingly, the best-responder trees at any one time may not always have been the best-responders and may not continue to be so. With minor adjustments to current dendroecological protocol and adopting an individualistic approach, we can improve the quality and reliability of the ecological inferences derived from the climate-growth relationships.  相似文献

Peculiarities of forming and growth of post-fire larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) forests at the southern range of their distribution in the Northern Mongolia were studied. Regularities of the stand structure and dynamics of biological productivity are analyzed and discussed in the paper. It has been proved that the structure of the organic mass of the post-fire herb-carex type larch tree stands at the southern border of forest vegetation distribution is closely related to their biometric indices as-age, density, and productivity. In comparison with tree stands from the other areas of forest vegetation, the total phytomass stock of larch phytocenoses appropriately increases by zonal gradient from forest-tundra border to the Transbaikalian southern taiga and northern regions of Mongolia. Regeneration of forest cover by edificator and formation of the original larch coenopopulation is a positive trend from an environmental point of view, because the Siberian larch in young and middle-age period in the area has a sufficiently high growth energy and rate of phytomass production, with more than twice exceeding mature forests in fixed carbon of the atmosphere and has positive values of carbon balance and total destruction of organic matter by the “input-output” parameters.  相似文献

The larch forests at the southern limit of the Siberian boreal forest in Central Asia have repeatedly experienced strong recent growth declines attributed to decreasing summer precipitation in the course of climate warming. Here, we present evidence from the southernmost Larix sibirica forests in eastern Kazakhstan that these declines are primarily caused by a decrease in effective moisture due to increasing summer temperatures, despite constant annual, and summer precipitation. Tree-ring chronologies (>800 trees) showed a reduction by 50–80% in mean ring width and an increase in the frequency of missing rings since the 1970s. Climate-response analysis revealed a stronger (negative) effect of summer temperature (in particular of the previous year’s June and July temperature) on radial growth than summer precipitation (positive effect). It is assumed that a rise in the atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, which typically increases with temperature, is negatively affecting tree water status and radial growth, either directly or indirectly through reduced soil moisture. Larch rejuvenation ceased in the 1950s, which is partly explained by increasing topsoil desiccation in a warmer climate and a high drought susceptibility of larch germination, as was demonstrated by a germination experiment with variable soil moisture levels. The lack of regeneration and the reduced annual stem increment suggest that sustainable forest management aiming at timber harvesting is no longer feasible in these southern boreal forests. Progressive climate warming is likely to cause a future northward shift of the southern limit of the boreal forest.  相似文献

Growth within tree populations varies among individuals due to changes in biotic and abiotic factors. The degree of such variation, defined as growth inequality, serves as a useful indicator of the uniformity of growth within a population in response to the prevalent environmental conditions. By application of the Gini coefficient (G), an index for inequality, we characterized the early growth inequality of ninety crosses of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.) and their open-pollinated parental lines. Tree cumulative height was measured annually for 8 consecutive years. Both the crosses and parental lines exhibited temporal changes in growth inequality. The inequality of total height among the crosses decreased logarithmically with age by nearly 3-fold after 13 growing seasons, suggesting that tree height became less variable among the crosses as trees grew larger. Interestingly, the Lorenz asymmetry, an index reflecting the shape of the Lorenze curve from which G is derived, revealed that the inequality of annual height increment among the crosses resulted from an alternate contribution of the fast-growing and slow-growing trees. Among parental lines, two provenances with the smallest and the largest overall inequality in total height showed a similar pattern of changes in annual growth inequality, and the provenance differences were consistent over time. Compared to the other provinces, a local provenance exhibited less variation in total height among individual trees as reflected by a smaller value of inequality, and was better adapted to the field conditions. Our results demonstrated the sensitivity and usefulness of the Gini coefficient and Lorenz asymmetry for the analysis of growth inequality in non-natural populations. Growth inequality is a potentially useful evaluation criterion for early selection. Given comparable initial growth, provenances/families with lower growth inequality values would likely outperform those with higher growth inequality, and eventually tree size of the latter would be more variable due to greater variations among individual trees. Assessment of growth inequality at early ages will advance our understanding of variability of tree growth within a population, facilitate forest genetics improvement programs, and enhance the efficiency of tree breeding.  相似文献

Male generative buds of the Siberian larch have no organic quiescence during the autumn-winter period and are capable of completing the development of male generative structures under favorable conditions. When microsporophylls of the Siberian larch were cultivated on medium MS with 0.2 mg/1 2.4-D, embryoids of two types were obtained: directly from the microspore body and via formation of organogenic callus. This means that in the Siberian larch, direct and indirect androgenesis in vitro is possible. The Siberian larch pollen was first germinated in vitro, which was enhanced by pretreatment with hydrogen peroxide.  相似文献

1. The monophagous larch sawfly, Pristiphora erichsonii, requires larch, Larix spp., shoots for oviposition and foliage for larval development. The hypothesis that chronic defoliation reduces shoot availability for adult females, causing shifts in host use within plantations of L. decidua and L. leptolepis , was evaluated over a 3-year period.
2. Larch productivity and sawfly abundance varied six- to 10-fold among individual trees within each plantation. Sawflies concentrated oviposition on the most rapidly growing trees, and had a marginal impact on shoot production. Consequently, sawfly herbivory on individual trees remained relatively constant for 3 years, failing to support the hypothesis that P. erichsonii defoliation causes shifts in host use.
3. Pristiphora erichsonii larval performance varied 20–30% among individual host trees. The oviposition event did not significantly affect larval performance or foliar nutrient content.
4. The relationship between cocoon survival and natural enemy abundance was evaluated among fifteen L. leptolepis trees. Parasites and predators killed over 65% of the 18 315 cocoons sampled. The proportion of cocoons killed by parasitoids declined significantly with P. erichsonii density, while predation rates increased under heavily infested trees. Overall, the proportion of cocoons killed by parasitoids and predators did not vary with sawfly density.
5. Results indicate that components of host vigour, herbivore performance and natural enemy guilds exhibit substantial spatial heterogeneity among trees within plantations of exotic Larix trees. Moreover, individual larch can tolerate repeated oviposition and herbivory without a rapid loss in shoot production. The potential for host plant physiological tolerance to herbivory to interact with natural enemy population dynamics and behaviour so as to stabilize herbivore population patterns is discussed.  相似文献

Aims Boreal forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Compared with the boreal forests in North America and Europe, relatively few research studies have been conducted in Siberian boreal forests. Knowledge related to the role of Siberian forests in the global carbon balance is thus essential for a full understanding of global carbon cycle. Methods This study investigated the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) during growing season (May–September) in an eastern Siberian boreal larch forest for a 3-year period in 2004–2006 with contrasting meteorological conditions.Important findings The study found that the forest served as a carbon sink during all of the 3 studied years; in addition, the meteorological conditions essentially influenced the specific annual value of the strength of the carbon sinks in each year. Although 2005 was the warmest year and much wetter than 2004, 2005 also featured the greatest amount of ecosystem respiration, which resulted in a minimum value of NEE. The study also found that the phenological changes observed during the three study years had a relatively small effect on annual NEE. Leaf expansion was 26 days earlier in 2005 than in the other 2 years, which resulted in a longer growing season in 2005. However, the NEE in 2005 was counterbalanced by the large rate of ecosystem respiration that was caused by the higher temperatures in the year. This study showed that meteorological variables had larger influences on the interannual variations in NEE for a Siberian boreal larch forest, as compared with phenological changes. The overall results of this study will improve our understanding of the carbon balance of Siberian boreal larch forests and thus can help to forecast the response of these forests to future climate change.  相似文献
