This article is part of a Special Issue “Parental Care”. The effects of differential maternal care received on offspring phenotype in rodents has been extensively studied between litters, but the consequences of differential mothering within litters on offspring neurobehavioral development have been rarely examined. We here investigated how variability in maternal care received among female rat siblings (measured four times daily on postnatal days 4, 6, 8, and 10) relates to the siblings' later emotional and maternal behaviors. As previously reported, we found that some female pups received up to three times more maternal licking bouts compared to their sisters; this difference was positively correlated with the pups' body weights. The number of maternal licking bouts that females received was negatively correlated with their later neophobic behaviors in an open field during periadolescence, but positively correlated with their anxiety-related behavior in an elevated plus maze during adulthood. Licking received was also positively correlated with females' later likelihood to retrieve pups in a maternal sensitization paradigm. In addition, females' neophobia during adolescence and anxiety-related behavior during adulthood predicted some aspects of both postpartum and sensitized maternal responsiveness. Medial prefrontal cortex expression of tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2; enzyme necessary for serotonin synthesis) was negatively associated with early maternal licking received. Interestingly, cortical TPH2 was positively associated with the maternal responsiveness of sensitized virgins but negatively associated with it in postpartum females. These results indicate that within-litter differences in maternal care received is an often neglected, but important, contributor to individual differences in offspring socioemotional behaviors as well as to the cortical serotonin neurochemistry that may influence these behaviors.  相似文献

Maternal behavior of Koltushi High- and Low-avoidance (KHA and KLA) rats strains was assessed over the prewealing period (days 6-21). Ten litters of each strain were observed during the light phase of the light/dark cycle. In a series of experiments, rat pups were taken from the maternal nest and placed into the opposite corner of the cage. The following parameters of the maternal behavior were recorded: the latency of the first contact with the pups, pup licking, latency of carrying/retrieval of the first pup back to the nest, time of returning to the nest of the whole litter, and mother's spontaneous behavior (grooming and locomotion time) over the course of 10 min of observation. KLA mothers stayed with their pups and took care of them more frequently than KHA mothers during the light phase of the circadian cycle. Time of self-grooming was significantly higher in KHA rats. The highest levels of self-grooming of mothers was registered on the first day of testing. The latency of the first coming to pups after their removal from the nest was lower in KHA rats, but they needed more time to returned all pups to the nest. The experimental evidence suggests that the KHA but not KLA rats with the active coping style and higher stress reactivity display disorders in maternal behavior in a novel situation.  相似文献

In altricial mammals and birds, the presence of a large number of litter or brood mates often affects the development of individual offspring by reducing the share of resources provided by the parents. However, sibling presence can also be favourable, conferring thermoregulatory benefits when ambient temperatures are low. Consequently, shifts in the relation between costs and benefits of sibling presence can be expected as a function of the thermal environment. In a study of a European rabbit population (Oryctolagus cuniculus) living in a field enclosure, we investigated the effects of litter size and soil temperature on pup growth over 7 years. Temperatures inside the subterranean nests were positively correlated with soil temperature and with litter size. Soil temperature varied strongly across the breeding season, ranging from 3 to 21°C. Under warmer soil temperature conditions (10–15°C and >15°C), pup growth decreased with increasing litter size, where litters of two pups (smallest litter size considered) showed the highest growth rates. In contrast, under colder soil temperature conditions (<10°C), the highest growth rates were found in litters of three pups. We also asked if such temperature-dependent differences in the optimal pup growth rates might be explained by differences in maternal characteristics, which might affect lactational performance. We assessed maternal performance using females’ postpartum body mass and social rank. However, we did not find consistent differences in maternal characteristics between females giving birth to different-sized litters during different soil temperature conditions, which would have provided an alternative explanation for the observed differences in litter size-dependent pup growth. We conclude that under colder soil temperature conditions, the thermal benefits of a greater number of littermates outweigh the negative consequences of competition for milk, leading to an environment-dependent shift in the optimal litter size for individual growth in this species.  相似文献

The effects of litter size on maternal care, body weight and infant development of golden hamsters were investigated from a longitudinal perspective. Litters were culled to 1,3,6 and 9 pups, and the behavior and body weight of mothers and pups were recorded from the 5th to the 25th postpartum day. We noted that the time spent by mothers in bodily interactions with pups decreased as a function of litter size; maternal pup retrievals reached their maximum around the 13-15th day, which coincided with the increased locomotor activity of pups at this time; the total number of pup retrievals by the mother increased as a function of the litter size, but mothers of larger litters were more 'efficient' (i.e. they failed less frequently in exhibiting a full sequence of retrievals) and exhibited a low litter-size proportional mean number of retrievals. All mothers gradually lost body mass throughout lactation, and decrease in body weight was significantly related to litter size. The mean body weight gain (%) by pups decreased as a function of litter size, but we also noted that single and larger litter pups exhibited a decreased body mass (grams) by the 15th day, suggesting that infant development may be impaired at both extremes of experimental conditions. We concluded that the behavior of mothers and pups was affected by the litter size, and it appeared that the litter had an optimal size-not so large as to overlap the mother's physical capacity, and not so small as to fail to compensate for the parental investment.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the potential developmental differences resulting from treating neonatal rat pups in either split-litter or whole-litter (nested) experimental designs. We directly compared rat pups dosed with triethyl lead (TEL) via both split-litter (representing all dosage groups within a single litter) and nested (all pups randomly assigned to a single litter receive the same dose) designs. The nested design was chosen to produce a uniform behavioral pattern across pups within each litter, whereas the split-litter design was chosen to promote pup competition and differential maternal care. On postpartum day 5, pups were administered either 12, 13, 14, or 15 mg/kg TEL, with each design represented by 12 litters. Although the LD50 values for the two designs were not significantly different, there were significantly more deaths in the 12 mg/kg dosage group within the split-litter design than in the nested design group. Preweaning survival times for split-litter dosed animals were also decreased. In addition, significant growth reduction (7-16%) was observed in the split-litter group, relative to the nested design animals during the preweaning period. These results suggest that neonatal toxicity is not independent from experimental design considerations, and that the factors of littermate competition and/or pup-induced maternal care deserve further study.  相似文献

The behaviour of multiparous female C3H mice rearing different sized litters was examined using an observational time-sampling procedure. The results indicate that while animals rearing smaller litters spend more time in the nest, more time licking individual pups, and during most of lactation, more time nursing the litter, animals rearing larger litters spend more time eating and drinking. It is suggested that the observed differences in behaviour may be the outcome of the differential nutritional requirements arising from feeding litters of different sizes. However, in a second experiment providing food and water inside the nest, the differences in nest-attendance and nursing behaviour persisted, suggesting that some aversive factor such as fatigue or discomfort may also be involved.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. During lactation, mothers require energy to meet bothmaternal and offspring requirements. If a mother exports toomuch energy to dependent offspring (in milk), her weight lossmay be excessive and maternal risk may increase. Conversely,too little energy allocation to offspring may reduce the growthrate or induce mortality of dependent offspring. This paradigmwas evaluated in cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) supportingsmall (3 pup) and large (6 pup) litters from early to late lactation.Several types of evidence indicate that physiological constraintslimit the ability of mothers with large litters to provide resourcesto offspring. Mothers with large litters produced a dilute,energy-poor milk and their rates of food intake, weight lossand energy export per litter appeared to approach physiologicalmaxima. Whereas the energy exported to pups in small littersincreased from early to late lactation, the energy flow perpup in large litters was consistently low; consequently, offspringin large litters had low growth rates. An increase in eithermaternal food intake or weight loss (catabolism of maternaltissue) could have provided additional energy to offset thelow growth rate of pups in large litters. However, mothers withlarge litters did not substantially increase their food intakeor weight loss compared with mothers supporting small litters.These results indicate that the maternal support of offspringin large litters is limited. The pattern of energy allocationshown by cotton rats with large litters likely reflects a compromisebetween meeting maternal and offspring energy requirements (cf.,Parker and Macnair, 1979). The energy flow is greater than optimalfor the parent but less than optimal for the offspring. Lessmaternal-offspring conflict occurs in small than large littersbecause offspring in small litters maintain a high growth rateat a relatively low maternal cost. Yet, under favorable environmentalconditions, the reduction in maternal-offspring conflict hasno apparent fitness benefit.  相似文献

We conducted a study on nest mortality of an individually marked population of European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus L., 1758) living in a field enclosure. Over 4 years, we determined maternities and quantified pup mortality during the nest period of 703 pups born in subterranean breeding burrows. Overall, pup mortality occurred in 42.7% of the litters, whereas 32.4% of all born pups were affected. Mortality was highest during the first few postnatal days. In about 50% of the cases, we managed to quantify different causes of mortality such as malnutrition, flooding, cooling of the pups, infanticide, or predation. The pups’ body mass on postnatal day 1, the thermal environment and the number of litter mates were the most important predictors of nest mortality. Litter mortality risk decreased with increasing soil temperature around the subterranean nests. A comparatively higher average pup body mass lowered the nest mortality risk of a litter, whereas this effect was more pronounced when soil temperatures were low. Furthermore, mortality was lowest in medium-sized litters, most probably due to the balance between the thermal benefits of huddling with litter siblings and the costs of having them due to the lower share of milk obtained by the individual pups in larger litters. In addition, nest mortality depended on characteristics of the mother; mortality was increased in litters of low-ranking females and of mothers with lower body mass. In conclusion, our study highlights multiple causes and the effects of different environmental and social factors on nest mortality of this small mammal.  相似文献

Pituitary-adrenal and behavioral responsiveness to rat pups which had been handled or shocked was assessed in mothers at Days 2, 9, and 16 postpartum. Mothers were exposed to these pups either directly where mother-infant contact was permitted or indirectly (pups placed in a wire mesh basket) where mother-infant contact was prevented. Handled and shocked pups elicited differential pituitary-adrenal responsiveness when mother-infant contact was prevented following pup treatment. Mothers responded more to shocked than to handled pups. While pup treatments elicited different patterns of maternal behavior, direct mother-infant contact subsequent to pup treatment eliminated the differential pattern of pituitary-adrenal responsiveness. These findings were discussed in terms of a parallel between behavioral and pituitary-adrenal indices of maternal responsiveness and the proposed role of maternal mediation in early experience effects.  相似文献

This study describes the first systematic observations of maternal behavior and pup development of captive Key Largo woodrats (Neotoma floridana smalli) during the first 30 days of life. Data were collected on six litters of pups born to four dams between December 2006 and July 2007. Gestations for the six litters averaged 38 days and all dams exhibited adequate maternal care postpartum. Key Largo woodrat maternal and pup behavior was generally consistent with behavior observed in other woodrat species. We observed greater pup independence from the dam and a marked change in social interactions between days 13–22. No sex differences in pup development or maternal care were observed. Activity budgets were consistent across dams and across days within the observation period. Although dams spent much of their time inactive with pups attached to their teats, the average percent of intervals with at least one pup observed attached decreased steadily during the 30‐day observation period. Attachment of pups to the dams' teats did not interfere with dams' ability to forage. Feeding with pups attached and feeding following active detachment of pups were both common. Dams were observed to actively detach pups by performing a circular turning motion. This information has application for the future management of this endangered species in captivity and in the wild. Consistent individual differences (CIDs) in behaviour, indicative of behavioural types or personalities, have been shown in taxa ranging from Cnidaria to Mammalia. However, despite numerous theoretical explanations there remains limited empirical evidence for selective mechanisms that maintain such variation within natural populations. We examined behavioural types and fitness proxies in wild female grey seals at the North Rona breeding colony. Experiments in 2009 and 2010 employed a remotely-controlled vehicle to deliver a novel auditory stimulus to females to elicit changes in pup-checking behaviour. Mothers tested twice during lactation exhibited highly repeatable individual pup-checking rates within and across breeding seasons. Observations of undisturbed mothers (i.e. experiencing no disturbance from conspecifics or experimental test) also revealed CIDs in pup-checking behaviour. However, there was no correlation between an individuals’ pup-checking rate during undisturbed observations with the rate in response to the auditory test, indicating plasticity across situations. The extent to which individuals changed rates of pup-checking from undisturbed to disturbed conditions revealed a continuum of behavioural types from proactive females, who maintained a similar rate throughout, to reactive females, who increased pup-checking markedly in response to the test. Variation in maternal expenditure (daily mass loss rate) was greater among more reactive mothers than proactive mothers. Consequently pups of more reactive mothers had more varied growth rates centred around the long-term population mean. These patterns could not be accounted for by other measured covariates as behavioural type was unrelated to a mother’s prior experience, degree of inter-annual site fidelity, physical characteristics of their pupping habitat, pup sex or pup activity. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that variation in behavioural types is maintained by spatial and temporal environmental variation combined with limits to phenotype-environment matching.  相似文献

In mammals, the duration of lactation varies much more than other life history parameters in relation to body mass, both within and between species. The causes of this variation are poorly understood and seem to result from varying conditions of mothers and young. We studied the effect of long-term maternal food restriction on litter mass at birth, duration of lactation and offspring development in the precocial guinea pig. Mild experimental food restriction during reproduction resulted in prolonged nursing behaviour of mothers. Evidence for a threshold mass at weaning was, however, equivocal. In the guinea pig, benefits of prolonged lactation prove hard to understand, because nutritional benefits are minor. Independently of maternal food regime, pups terminated suckling attempts several days after mothers ceased nursing behaviour. The time between the last nursing behaviour and the last suckling attempts was not longer in litters with higher need, that is, in litters of food-restricted females, than in litters of females fed ad libitum. Under food restriction, mothers maintained their own body mass, leading in pups to lower mass at birth, reduced postnatal growth and lower body mass at maturity. Guinea pig mothers appear to be selected to value their own condition more than that of a litter. We suggest that lengthening of the nursing period under poor conditions is a life history response primarily of precocial mammals.  相似文献

Female mice are said to be unable to distinguish own from alien offspring and will indiscriminately nurse each other's young in communal nests. Here, we present results of a split‐litter experiment that tested whether offspring growth was affected depending on whether they were nursed by their own or unrelated foster mothers. Pups of reciprocal crosses between C57/B6 and CBA/Ca strains were fostered in mixed litters that consisted half of their natural siblings and half of unrelated littermates of the reciprocal genotype. Analysing the relative growth of the two pup types showed that offspring gained proportionally more weight when nursed by their own mothers than their cross‐fostered litter mates during the period from day 15 until weaning, during which maternal provisioning effort contributes to pup weight gain. Before day 15 of the pups’ life, however, we found no advantage of being nursed by biological mothers, and we suggest that this may be due to the effects of paternally expressed genes in young that mask their maternal identity, thus favouring indiscriminate nursing of all young in a communal nest.  相似文献

It has been commonly argued that, in house mice, female post-partum fighting against a male intruder functions to protect the offspring from infanticide. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that maternal aggression is actually related to pup defence and, specifically, according to parental investment theory, that its intensity should increase with litter size. 60 nulliparous albino female mice were mated and randomly assigned to four experimental groups in which litters were culled at birth to 0, 4, 8, or 12 pups, respectively. On day 8 after delivery all females were tested for maternal aggression against a stranger adult male conspecific (5-min exposure). No aggression occurred in the group in which all pups had been removed. In the other groups, the proportion of females displaying overt aggression increased with litter size. Several scores of female agonistic behaviour (proportion of females displaying overt aggression, total attacking time, frequency of tail rattling) were significantly higher for the females rearing 8 and 12 pups than for the females rearing 4 pups. Aggressive behaviour of females rearing 12 pups was not significantly higher than that of females rearing 8 pups. No male committed infanticide. These results support the hypothesis that rodent maternal aggression is strictly related to offspring defence and are consistent with the theoretical prediction that, the costs of the defence being equal and the gain in fitness increasing with litter size, the intensity of maternal defence of the young should increase with their number.  相似文献

Female grey seals allocated more resources to individual sons than to individual daughters. Mothers of male pups spent significantly larger proportions of their time defending and feeding their young than did mothers of female pups. The amount of time females spent ashore and the proportion of time spent in various behavioural states was influenced by the habitat of the birth site and the age of the pup.
Grey seal neonates spent the majority of their time prone and immobile, perhaps to allow maximum energy retention (maximum mass gain) and to facilitate mothers relocating their pups. The proportion of time pups spent in the various behavioural states was influenced by the whelping habitat. Pups became increasingly active with age. Males were significantly more aggressive than females and, at one site they performed nosing behaviour with their mothers significantly more often than did female neonates.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effects of isolation rearing, through the artificial rearing paradigm (AR), on the hormonal induction of maternal behavior (MB) in female Sprague-Dawley rats. Between postnatal days (PND) 4 and 18, rat pups were raised either with their mothers (MR) or artificially, without their mothers (AR). As well, some of the AR pups were provided with additional maternal-like licking stimulation (AR-MAX) while the others were not given any additional stimulation (AR-MIN). At PND 60-100, AR (n = 28) and MR (n = 25) animals were ovariectomized (OVX). One week after the surgery, rats were either treated with a 2-week estrogen (E2) and progesterone (P) hormonal regimen or not treated with the hormone replacement. Maternal behavior testing with foster pups commenced 24 h following the removal of P treatment. Results demonstrated that MR animals showed increased pup licking and hover-crouching in comparison to AR animals and that hormonally primed groups became maternal more quickly than non-primed groups, regardless of the rearing history. There was also a significant interaction between the rearing condition (MR vs. AR) and hormonal treatment on the quality of maternal behavior exhibited. The highest level of licking and crouching was shown by the hormone-treated MR group. Mechanisms for these effects are discussed.  相似文献

Lactating Long-Evans rats (Rattus norvegicus) were presented with three-day-old male and female pups that were either untreated, coated with collodion in the anogenital region or on the neck, or perfumed; or with female pups odorized with either male or female pup urine. As measured by related t-tests of maternal anogenital licking, male and female pups were discriminated in the untreated condition, but not when masking stimuli were present. Female pups treated with male urine elicited more licking than female pups treated with female urine. Overall, maternal licking was decreased by olfactory masking agents and increased by pup urine. It was concluded that olfactory stimuli from pups both stimulate maternal licking and serve as a basis for discriminating male and female offspring.  相似文献

Grey seals breed colonially on substrates ranging from ice to rocky or sandy beaches. Clear differences in seal behaviour patterns exist among such broad classes of breeding habitat. However, finer scale topographical variation is likely to influence individual behaviour with consequences for pupping success. We examined topographical influences on the behaviour of breeding female grey seals by quantifying topography at a subseal size resolution. Using submetre resolution digital terrain models of two sites within a rocky breeding colony, we compared site topography in relation to observed differences in female behaviour at these sites. Females at both sites preferred breeding close to water (standing pools or sea) and frequently commuted between their pups and water. Topographical models indicated that one site was more costly for seals in terms of their locations and movements within the site. This was due to a lack of low-elevation land adjacent to the main access points from the sea and the reduced availability of pools. Females at this site showed reduced pup attendance and an increase in energetically costly behaviours, whilst females at the lower-cost site spent more time interacting with their pups and resting. These topographically induced behavioural differences are likely to affect the quantity and quality of pup provisioning by mothers and influence individual pupping site selection. Less costly sites are likely to be colonized preferentially and by larger, older and more dominant females, potentially generating finescale spatial heterogeneity in female quality within the breeding colony. Parasites can cause a broad range of sublethal fitness effects across a wide variety of host taxa. However, a host’s efforts to compensate for possible parasite-induced fitness effects are less well-known. Parental effects may beneficially alter the offspring phenotype if parental environments sufficiently predict the offspring environment. Parasitism is a common stressor across generations; therefore, parental infestation could reliably predict the likelihood of infestation for offspring. However, little is known about relationships between parasitism and transgenerational phenotypic plasticity. Thus, we investigated how maternal and grandmaternal infestation with fleas (Xenopsylla ramesis) affected offspring quality and quantity in a desert rodent (Meriones crassus). We used a fully-crossed design with control and infested treatments to examine litter size, pup body mass at birth, and pup mass gain before weaning for combinations of maternal and grandmaternal infestation status. No effect of treatment on litter size or pup body mass at birth was found. However, maternal and grandmaternal infestation status significantly affected pre-weaning body mass gain, a proxy for the rate of maturation, in male pups. Pups gained significantly more weight before weaning if maternal and grandmaternal infestation statuses matched, regardless of the treatment. Thus, pups whose mothers and grandmothers experienced similar risks of parasitism, either both non-parasitized or both infested, would reach sexual maturity more quickly than those pups whose mothers’ infestation status did not match that of their grandmothers. These results support the contention that parents can receive external cues such as the risk of parasitism, that prompt them to alter offspring provisioning. Therefore, parasites could be a mediator of environmentally-induced maternal effects and could affect host reproductive fitness across multiple generations.  相似文献
