Researchers have hypothesised that influxes of pelagic zooplankton to river channels after floods and high flows are necessary for strong recruitment of some native fish species, including Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii peelii) (Mitchell), in the Murray–Darling river system, Australia. This study investigated the composition of the diet and gut fullness of drifting Murray cod larvae weekly during two spawning seasons with contrasting flows, to determine if pelagic zooplankton comprised a greater proportion of the gut contents and guts were fuller in a high flow (2000) than in a low flow (2001) year. Gut fullness and yolk levels of 267 larvae were ranked, and prey identified to family level. Approximately 40 and 70% of individuals had been feeding in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Gut fullness increased with declining yolk reserves. Larvae in both the years had an almost exclusively benthic diet, irrespective of the flow conditions at the time. Substantial inundation of dry ground in 2000, albeit restricted to in-channel benches, anastomosing channels and oxbow lakes, did not lead to an influx of pelagic, floodplain-derived zooplankton subsequently exploited by Murray cod larvae. These results have the implications for the management of regulated temperate lowland rivers: high flows cannot automatically be assumed to be beneficial for the fish larvae of all species and their food resources, and caution should be exercised with the timing of flow releases.  相似文献

The decline of the endangered Mary River cod, Maccullochella peelii mariensis, of Queensland, Australia, has been attributed to anthropomorphic habitat alterations, however, the relationships between this subspecies and its physical environment are poorly understood. We used radiotelemetry to investigate the movements and use of habitats by nine Mary River cod (total length 420–760mm; weight 1.3–5.5kg) in the Mary River system over a 20 month period. The mean distance moved each month was positively correlated with monthly stream discharge, but the direction of movements was unpredictable. Patterns of movement varied considerably among individuals and appeared to be unrelated to size. Cod established home ranges of between 70 and 820m in length. Five of the tagged cod returned to a previous home range after moving more than 10km, whereas three did not move more than 2km from their capture location for the duration of the study. Cod used large woody debris complexes more than any other type of habitat, and rarely used areas of open water. Managers should give high priority to maintenance of fish passage and protection/rehabilitation of large woody debris habitats if cod populations are to recover.  相似文献

Otoliths of ocean-pen reared cod, Gadus morhua, provide a unique opportunity to examine the lifetime history of the fish. Here we report 18 analyses of such otoliths on seasonal (winter and summer) stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios. The calculated isotopic temperatures from otoliths of reared cod were essentially in agreement with the temperature record during rearing, suggesting that temperature is a dominant factor in the precipitation of otolith aragonite. Carbon isotope ratios increased with age and leveled off at 4 years old, presumed to correlate with sexual maturity of cod. As compared with otoliths of wild-caught cod, significant differences were found in isotope variation and the correlation between 13C and 18O. These differences were probably attributable to the different environmental constraints and food supply.  相似文献

We synthesized information on freshwater fish biodiversity in the Yangtze River basin. We documented 361 species and subspecies that had been recorded and described from the basin. Of these, 177 species are endemic. The basin is usually divided into three parts, i.e. the upper reaches, the middle reaches and the lower reaches. This study indicated that the three reaches approach was not supported by fish distribution patterns. Hydrological alterations are perhaps the largest threat to fish biodiversity in the basin. Fishes in the upper reaches will be seriously affected by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam and other dams, and action should be taken for priority conservation. The most immediate restoration need is reconnection of the Yangtze River with its lakes. The cluster of lakes in the Central Yangtze should be protected to maintain habitats for spawning, feeding and migration of migratory fishes. Our study indicates a need to identify areas of high fish biodiversity and to select nature reserves to mitigate the loss of fish biodiversity in the Yangtze River basin.  相似文献

Germination was readily induced in recalcitrant microspore-derived embryos of Brassica napus Topas when they were exposed to a period of chilling (9–12 days at 4°C) or partial desiccation (rapid or slow air drying) prior to germination. In general, embryos thirty-five days old had the highest germination rates as compared to younger or older ones. Populations of embryos were induced to germinate at a rate of over 90% under specific temperature, desiccation and age conditions. Synopsis Small numbers of mitochondria-rich (chloride) cells were found in the yolksac epithelium of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) embryos just before hatching and in eleuthero-embryos up to 14 days after hatching. This suggests that the yolksac epithelium may play a limited ionoregulatory role in this species.Mitochondria-rich cells were also present in small numbers in the branchial epithelium of embryos just before hatching and in increasing numbers in eleutheroembryos during the first two weeks after hatching. The cells in the branchial epithelium showed marked variations in appearance, particularly in the fine structure of the tubular (smooth) endoplasmic reticulum. Few of the mitochondria-rich cells examined here had the pitted apex which is characteristic of homologous cells in other species.There appeared to be no differences in the numbers or appearance of mitochondria-rich cells in embryos and eleutheroembryos reared in different ambient salinities (distilled water, 110/00 and 130/00 sea water), possibly indicating that the genesis of the ionoregulatory function of the gills has not occurred at that interval of development.  相似文献

Synopsis Social and reproductive behavior of three paternal mouthbrooding cardinalfishes (Apogonidae) were investigated in the shallow marine waters of Shirahama, Japan. The solitary species Apogon doederleini and A. niger bred in transient pairs, in which a male and female associated for only a few hours of each afternoon on less than 5 successive days. The prespawning behavior was the same as the courtship display on days prior to spawning. After spawning, egg-incubating males were usually left alone. The gregarious species Apogon notatus formed territorial lasting pairs, which resided at given sites from dawn to dusk on each day during a period of a month or more. After spawning, the egg-incubating male either continued to stay with his mate in the territory, or left it to enter into an aggregation. In the latter case, the female continued to reside in the territory, pairing with a new male whom she brought from an aggregation. It is suggested that in paternal apogonids the prolonged pair bond and territoriality should have developed only in gregarious species as secondary adaptation for reproductive success: to avoid conspecific interference during spawning.  相似文献

Synopsis The spawning and nesting behavior ofEtheostoma (Boleosoma) perlongum was investigated in the field and laboratory. Sexual dimorphism is highly developed in such features as genital papillae, first dorsal and paired fins, and nuptial coloration. A reproductive migration from mid-lake to shore occurs in the spring: males precede females to select nest sites under submerged sticks and other debris. The male excavates a depression beneath the submerged object. Gonad analysis indicates a single spawning season extending from March through June. Nests were found from late April to mid-June and were guarded by a single male for periods of 13 to 36 days. Males initiate courtship by lateral display, lead the female to the nest site and show the nest by inverting. The female responds by tail up, tail wag and circle; males also tail wag and circle. Spawning pairs invert, usually in unison, and orient head to head or, less often, head to tail. The female deposits eggs while holding her body in a weak S or J shape with the caudal peduncle held away from the spawning substrate while vibrating.  相似文献

Densities of silver perch Bidyanus bidyanus eggs drifting in the Murray River, Australia, suggested a peak spawning time between 2100 and 0100 hours, and a propensity to drift in higher densities near shore and at the bottom of the water column. The results highlight the need to consider such spatial and temporal patterns when estimating species-specific drift abundances.  相似文献

Zygotic embryo explants of Cercis canadensis L. cultured in vitro responded to 1 and 5 M 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) or 50 M -naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) by initiating somatic embryos and adventitious roots. Somatic embryos and adventitous roots were formed from developing zygotic embryos, while fully developed embryos collected from mature seed initiated only adventitious roots. Following 2,4-D application, the number of somatic embryos decreased while adventitious roots increased with increasing developmental age of the explant. The greatest number of somatic embryos were initiated with a 5 to 20 day exposure to 5 M 2,4-D from zygotic embryos collected between 75 and 82 days post-anthesis in 1987. Somatic embryos formed directly from epidermal and subepidermal cells, while adventitious roots developed from interior cortex cells. Normal somatic embryos were recovered after a 20 day exposure to 5 M 2,4-D and acclimated to greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

The larval development and food habits of the marbled parrotfish, Leptoscarus vaigiensis (Scaridae) associated with drifting algae were studied. In this study, 628 L. vaigiensis of various developmental stages ranging from postflexion larvae (9.4mm in standard length, SL) to adults (192.0mmSL) were sampled from drifting algae at two fishing ports in Nakagusuku Bay of Okinawa Island. In 3969 fish comprising 65 taxa in 34 families of Teleostei collected with drifting algae, L. vaigiensis occupied 15.8% of samples and occurred generally throughout the whole year. A large number of L. vaigiensis were collected from July to October accompanied by an occurrence of drifting algae composed of Sargassum spp. Larvae and early juveniles ranging from 11.1 to 14.9mmSL appeared sporadically throughout the year, and postflexion larvae 11mmSL occurred from July to November. Their food shifted from planktonic copepods in postflexion larvae and juveniles ranging from 10.0 to 14.9mmSL to seaweed in the juveniles ranging from 15.0 to 24.9mmSL. Furthermore, adults and young over 25mmSL fed almost exclusively on seaweed, with Sargassum spp. constituting the drifting algae. These facts indicate that drifting algae may have a role concerning food and habitat, and may act as a nursery for L. vaigiensis.  相似文献

Significant differences in somatic embryogenesis from melon seeds were observed among 18 cultivars; especially, cultivars Earl's Favorite and Barnett which produced a large number of somatic embryos. F1 seeds were obtained by reciprocal crosses between cultivars. Some lines produced a large number of somatic embryos whereas others showed no or poor embryogenic response. Most of the F1 seeds formed somatic embryos. The frequency of somatic embryogenesis decreased as compared to the parents with the highest potential. Transfer of the frequency of somatic embryogenesis from superior responding cultivars to inferior cultivars was proved. Data on catching humpback salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha at the age of 0+ and chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta at the age of 1+ in the Ilyushina River (Kunashir Island) in the period of spawning migration are given. A number of factors influencing embryogenesis from isolated microspores of radish (Raphanus sativus) were examined. Of 11 genotypes evaluated, six produced embryos ranging from 8.3 embryos per 105 microspores for Chugoku-ao to 0.2 for Tenshun, but five genotypes were not responsive. An initial culture period at elevated temperature before incubation at 25°C was essential for induction of microspore embryogenesis. However, the optimum period of the treatment varied among genotypes and/or experiments. Bud size also influenced microspore embryogenesis. Though optimum bud size was different between genotypes, the microspore populations represented in these buds contained uninucleate and binucleate microspores. Selection of embryogenic microspores using percoll density gradient resulted in up to 1.3-fold increase of embryo yield. Though almost all embryos failed to develop directly into plantlets, plants were obtained by multiple subcultures. The regenerated plants had hyperploid chromosome numbers.  相似文献

We studied age, growth and reproduction of an introduced poeciliid, Gambusia holbrooki (Agassiz, 1859), in the Ebro delta marshes. Maximum ages observed were 2+ in females and 0+ in males. Growth commenced in March and continued until September. Females reached greater sizes, had a higher rate of growth and lived longer than males. The largest sizes found were 63 mm versus 32 mm . Multiple spawning occurred throughout the reproductive cycle (from May to September). The average brood size per female reached its maximum in July in the parental cohort (86 embryos/) and in August in the offspring cohort (29 embryos/). After reproduction the parental cohort decreased drastically. The relationship between fecundity (F) and total length (mm) was calculated for each month of the reproductive period. Sex-ratio deviated significantly from unity.Viviparity, several broods and large larvae provide G. holbrooki with several advantages over oviparous species. The capacity to adjust its life history to a particular environment could explain the life history differences between those in the Ebro delta and other populations.  相似文献

Water samples were collected from the Amazon River system during a high flood period, in June 1989, and lipids associated with particles retained on GF/F filters were examined. Particles showed a highly variable organic carbon content (1.8–29.0%). Corresponding organic carbon concentrations varied from 0.36 to 1.13 mg/l. The flood conditions encountered during the sampling period may feed exceptional inputs of soil organic matter into the tributaries and the Amazon River. Composition and concentration of sterols, fatty acids and pigments were determined to estimate the relative portion of terrigenous and autochthonous fraction of this complex organic matter. Sterol distribution patterns were similar to other equatorial rivers, in the Orinoco (Venezuela) and Solo (Indonesia). In comparison with the dominant profile of the Amazon system, distinct patterns were found in the Trombetas River (295,22 275 295 285, 285,22) and in the Tapajos River (275,22 > 275 295, 285, 285,22). These fingerprints reflect different vegetation types of drainage basins and distinct planktonic pools. The distribution of even-carbon numbered saturated fatty acids in the carbon range of 24–36 revealed low inputs of constituents associated with cuticular waxes of vascular plants in Black waters and in the Tapajos River (200 ng/l), higher in White waters (328–483 ng/l) and highest in the Trombetas River (704 ng/l) and in stagnant waters of a small lake close to the Amazon (1088 ng/l). Pigment concentrations showed that in the main river and most tributaries vegetal carbon did not represent more than 2%, except for the Tapajos River (6.2%) and in relatively stagnant waters sampled along the main river (9.2%). Based on relative abundance of Chl b, Chl c, fucoxanthin, peridinin, alloxanthin, and zeaxanthin, various phytoplanktonic assemblages were evidenced in the Amazon River system. Branched fatty acids in the carbon range of 15–17 gave insight into bacterial signatures. They showed low microbial contribution to the fatty acid pool, with slightest higher contribution in a swamp of stagnant waters and in the White waters of the Solimoes River.  相似文献

Human and domestic animal activities and visits to an impacted site in the Njoro River, Kenya, were recorded from 1994 to 1995. The activities of people in the humid and wet zones of the stream included linen washing, water abstraction, excretion, bathing and swimming. Human and animal visits and activities along the Njoro River were on a daily basis and were patterned according to the time of the day, weather and seasons. Women formed the first group to visit the stream at dawn, followed by men and lastly, children. The diurnal pattern of visits was bimodal, with major peaks between 0600 and 1100 h and from 1600 h until dusk. The intensity of all major activities peaked at around midday and donkeys and cattle formed the largest proportion of the domestic animals that visited the stream. Much of the small-scale water abstraction occurred between 0700 and 1100 h, coinciding with the time when most people visited the stream. Water abstraction was most intense during the dry season. A mean discharge of 1.7 litres per second was measured whilst 0.3 litre of water per second was abstracted at the impacted site, implying that about 20% of the flow volume of the Njoro River was abstracted at a single site in one day.The effects of the human and animal activities on the structure of macrozoobenthos in the wet zone of the Njoro River were studied on the impacted site in relation to an upstream reference site and a downstream reference site. Oligochaetes and chironomids dominated the fauna in all three sites. The impacted site had low patchiness and mean crowding, with the taxa distribution tending toward a randomly dispersed spatial pattern. The mean turnover (±SD) of the macroinvertebrates was 47±18, 48±26 and 36±22 in the impacted, downstream and upstream sites, respectively. The trampling of the streambed by humans and livestock could, therefore, alter the benthos structure through redistribution and reduction of faunal patchiness. The cumulative effect of small-scale, but widespread and frequent disturbances might have large impacts on whole river systems. This study demonstrated that, in the tropics, quantification of the daily activities of people and domestic animals is important for future management of the Njoro River and consequently, Lake Nakuru.  相似文献

Synopsis Age composition, growth and body condition of the Sarotherodon mossambicus (Peters) stock in the Plover Cove Reservoir were investigated. The fish in this reservoir have a relatively short life cycle; the stock consisted of mainly two to three age groups. Influx of recruits in September and October maintained a high proportion of O-age group fish in the stock. This percentage remained high until the following March or April when the I-age group attained dominance. Length-weight analyses indicated that S. mossembicus conform to the allometric formula W = aLn with a and n exhibiting marked seasonal variations. Growth was most rapid during the first 20 months of life and decreased noticeably after 30 months. In general growth was limited to those months when the water temperature was above 20° C. Both body condition and visceral fat content exhibited seasonal variations which were not correlated with each other or with variations in temperature. However, body condition appears to be directly related to feeding intensity. Mean body condition decreased with increasing age and also decreased progressively during this study. This progressive decrease was probably related to the progressive decrease in salinity of the water and also the carrying capacity of the reservoir rather than to the nutrient content of the water. Mean values for the body condition of females were in general higher than for males, suggesting that females are more robust than males.Maximum accumulations of fat occurred in June and July, corresponding to the breeding period. Such accumulations are thought to be a prerequisite before spawning.  相似文献

Summary Somatic embryos of the cut rose cultivars Domingo and Vickey Brown were obtained from callus derived from leaf explants on half strength Murashige and Skoog medium with low concentrations of kinetin and 1-naphthyl acetic acid or 2-naphthyloxyacetic acid. Somatic embryos were first observed after 6 to 12 weeks of culture on callus formed at the basis or midrib of the leaf. A data set on community composition of the phytoplankton of the River Moselle (France) has been used for testing the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH). After a short presentation of the ecology of the river and of its phytoplankton, the main changes in composition and diversity of the suspended algal assemblage are described. It is emphasized that discharge fluctuations, related to weather changes, play a key role, but that biotic factors such as grazing and parasitism may also influence diversity in stable summer conditions.  相似文献
