Recent salt marsh and barrier island restoration efforts in the northern Gulf of Mexico have focused on optimizing self-sustaining attributes of restored marshes to provide maximum habitat value and storm protection to vulnerable coastal communities. Salt marshes in this region are dominated by Spartina alterniflora and Avicennia germinans, two species that are valued for their ability to stabilize soils in intertidal salt marshes. We conducted a controlled greenhouse study to investigate the influences of substrate type, nutrient level, and marsh elevation on the growth and biomass allocation of S. alterniflora and A. germinans, and the consequent effects on soil development and stability. S. alterniflora exhibited optimal growth and survival at the lowest elevation (? 15 cm below the water surface) and was sensitive to high soil salinities at higher elevations (+ 15 cm above the water surface). A. germinans performed best at intermediate elevations but was negatively affected by prolonged inundation at lower elevations. We found that although there was not a strong effect of substrate type on plant growth, the development of stressful conditions due to the use of suboptimal materials would likely be exacerbated by placing the soil at extreme elevations. Soil shear strength was significantly higher in experimental units containing either S. alterniflora or A. germinans compared to unvegetated soils, suggesting that plants effectively contribute to soil strength in newly placed soils of restored marshes. As marsh vegetation plays a critical role in stabilizing shorelines, salt marsh restoration efforts in the northern Gulf of Mexico and other storm impacted coasts should be designed at optimal elevations to facilitate the establishment and growth of key marsh species.  相似文献

Environmental stress may favour facilitative interactions among plants but whether these interactions are positive for the benefactor and how this depends on stress factors, remains to be determined. We studied the effect of beneficiary cover and biomass on reproduction of the benefactor cushion plant Laretia acaulis (Apiaceae) in the central Chilean Andes during three years. Study sites were situated along an elevational gradient at 2600, 2800, 3000 and 3150 m a.s.l. This range comprises a cold‐ and a drought‐stress gradient, with moisture increasing and temperature decreasing with elevation. We studied the effect of natural gradients in beneficiary cover and of experimental cover removal on cushion flower and fruit production. Beneficiary cover had a negative effect on flower production but not on infructescence and fruit densities or fruit weights. A positive effect of beneficiaries on the fraction of flowers converted into fruits was detected for hermaphrodite cushions. The effect of beneficiary cover on flowering was independent of elevation or cushion gender, although these latter factors explained most of the variation. Removing the aboveground parts of the beneficiaries positively affected flowering at 2800 m a.s.l. but not at the other elevations. Our results suggest negative effects of facilitation on L. acaulis flowering, but these are neutralized in fruit production. Surprisingly, this conclusion holds along the entire elevational or stress gradient. This suggests that this system of facilitation is evolutionarily stable and not very sensitive to environmental change. It remains to be tested, however, whether facilitation affects fitness via growth and long‐term survival in these slow‐growing alpine cushions.  相似文献

In the southern Andes mountains (27–\(39{^{\circ }}\hbox {S}\)) Azorella madreporica and Laretia acaulis, two Apiaceae cushion plant species commonly known as yaretas, conform a well-established altitudinal vegetation belt along the lower Andean zone. These species have been considered as fundamental components of several ecological dynamics within their communities; however, high-mountain ecosystems are increasingly threatened worldwide by natural and anthropogenic pressures and the southern Andes are not the exception. Recognizing that genetic information is crucial for the success of any conservation or restoration initiative in wild populations, we developed and cross-amplified 28 specifically designed microsatellite markers (14 in A. madreporica and 14 in L. acaulis), and also tested the cross amplification of 25 markers from the related species Azorella selago. In a region which is particularly vulnerable to global change trends, this new polymorphic microsatellite loci will be useful in the study of the genetic diversity of these high-mountain cushion plants, which are pivotal in the structuring of their native ecosystems.  相似文献

Intensity and magnitude of the growth-climate relationship depends on juniper species and sites. Juniperus seravschanica at low elevations shows highest potential for April–September drought reconstruction in the Turkestan range (Pamir-Alay), Uzbekistan.

Abstract

We present a detailed dendroclimatological study of three juniper species, Juniperus seravschanica Kom., Juniperus semiglobosa Regel and Juniperus turkistanica Kom., sampled at six sites of different elevation (2100–2700 m a.s.l.), exposition (west and south) and steepness (10°–30°) in the Zaamin National Park, Turkestan range, Pamir-Alay mountain system in eastern Uzbekistan. Simple correlation statistics and redundancy analyses were applied to detect species- and site-specific climate responses during the twentieth century, which were additionally investigated in the high-frequency domain by identifying extreme growth years. Our results show that tree-ring formation of J. seravschanica at our low-elevation site is strongly limited by April to September drought conditions, while J. semiglobosa inherits a weak and variable climate response with respect to elevation. J. turkistanica growth at high altitudes is positively associated with warm spring and summer temperatures. Species-specific growth extremes are triggered by incoming air masses from the Atlantic and Arctic, highlighting the connection of synoptic climate regimes across Eurasia. From a dendroclimatic perspective, J. seravschanica exhibits a high potential for reconstructing past drought and pluvials, but under sustained temperature rise also J. semiglobosa will likely increase its sensitivity to drought. Moreover, J. turkistanica at its distribution limit at the tree line is a suitable proxy of summer temperature. Our findings clearly demonstrate that a careful selection of the site, overall topography and elevation as well as the different juniper species are important for successfully reconstructing past climate in Uzbekistan.

We investigated flowering phenology, pollinator visitation and visitor community composition in communities of self-incompatible sympatric Primula species in a high-elevation Himalayan ecosystem. Within the tight constraints imposed by short growing seasons in such ecosystems, interactions among co-occurring plants for pollinators may vary from competition to facilitation, depending on the specifics of the system. We found that pollinator community composition changed with elevation in this system: lepidopterans were the dominant visitors at lower elevations (2200–3000 masl), bees (other than bumblebees) dominated at mid-elevations (3000–3800 masl) and bumblebees dominated at higher elevations (3800–4600 masl). However, within an elevation zone, there were no significant differences in pollinators amongst co-occurring Primula species. At a focal study site where multiple Primula species co-occurred, our results showed that even while the overall flowering periods of these species broadly overlapped, the peak flowering periods of different Primula species were temporally segregated. Upon further inferring the nature of interaction amongst co-flowering Primula species, we found that plots with higher Primula diversity (≥?2 species) and density (80–100 individuals) experienced significantly higher pollinator visitation, compared with plots with single species and low flower densities (40–50 individuals). Our results suggest that in this community of sympatric, self-incompatible Primula species, a broadly aggregated, synchronous floral display of multiple species results in pollinator facilitation by attracting a greater number of pollinator visitors. Within this broadly synchronous display, the temporal segregation of peak flowering period of individual species may reduce competition for pollinators and limit heterospecific pollen transfer.  相似文献

Freshwater calanoid copepods develop abundant populations in lentic water bodies such as lakes, reservoirs and lagoons. In this study, we examined the potential habitat value of edges in lotic systems such as creeks and rivers where waters tend to stagnate, providing lentic-like environments. We examined a total of 353 edge samples collected from 321 sites across the state of New South Wales, Australia, with latitudes in the range 28.3–37.4°S and elevations in the range 2–1834 m above sea level. Of the total samples examined, calanoid copepods were found in 94 samples, with the frequency of occurrences of species decreasing in the order: Boeckella fluvialis Henry, B. triarticulata (Thomson), Gladioferens spinosus Henry, G. pectinatus (Brady), B. major Searle, B. minuta Sars, and Calamoecia lucasi Brady. The probability of occurrence of the calanoid copepods was related negatively to both latitude (as absolute values) and elevation, based on logistic regression models. We conclude that the edges of many lotic systems provide additional habitats for some species of freshwater calanoid copepods, with constraints on their distributions along latitudinal and elevational gradients.  相似文献

Bird vocalizations are likely shaped both by natural and sexual selection. Here we test the sensory-drive hypothesis, which states that communication signals diverge as a direct adaptation to the signaling environment and can evolve to minimize degradation and maximize transmission. We examined the effects of elevation and other habitat variables on variation in vocalizations of Chiroxiphia boliviana (Aves, Pipridae) along an elevational gradient (1300–2500 m) in cloud and humid montane forests in the Andes of Bolivia. We also conducted sound transmission experiments to determine if reverberation and attenuation changed along the gradient. Reverberation increased at higher elevations, and attenuation decreased at higher elevations and increased for higher frequencies. We recorded vocalizations from ~?50 individuals throughout the elevational gradient and examined variation in duration and bandwidth of short calls (used as contact calls between males), 2 display calls (advertisement for females) and 2 types of male–male duets (including interval times between males). Duration of short calls, display 1 and duet 1 increased with elevation. Bandwidth of short calls increased at mid-elevation categories and decreased at high elevations, whereas bandwidth of display 1 and duet 1 decreased with elevation. We also directly related the transmission properties to vocalizations and found that bandwidth of short calls decreased with reverberation and attenuation, bandwidth of display 2 decreased with reverberation, and duration of duet 1 both increased and decreased with attenuation (at 3 and 4 kHz, respectively). This study suggests that vocalizations by C. boliviana may be adapted to the habitat transmission properties along the elevational gradient; and perhaps that increasing song length and concentrating energy within a narrow bandwidth may lead to an increase in amplitude and improvement in transmission. Overall, our results support the sensory-drive hypothesis and suggest that this form of selection is likely common along tropical elevational gradients.  相似文献

The N2-fixing shrub Alnus viridis is currently encroaching on montane grasslands in the Alps as a result of reduced land management and complete abandonment. Alnus introduces large amounts of nitrogen (N) into these formerly N-poor grasslands and restricts the succession to montane forests. We studied pools and fluxes of N and the associated C pools in pastures (controls) and adjacent Alnus shrublands at two elevations (1650 versus 1950 m a.s.l.) in three valleys in the Swiss central Alps. The total N and C pools stored in 50-year-old Alnus shrubland did not exceed those in adjacent pastures with a total of approximately 610 g N m?2 in phytomass plus soil (down to 30 cm) at both elevations. In Alnus stands, reduced soil N pools balanced the gain in phytomass N pools, a likely result of a faster turnover of soil N. The soil solution under Alnus was continuously enriched with nitrate, with a total N leaching of 0.79 g N m?2 season?1 (June–October) under 50-year-old stands at both elevations and the highest flux of 1.76 g N m?2 season?1 in 25-year-old shrubland at low elevation, clearly indicating an excess of available N in Alnus shrubland. In contrast, N leaching across all pastures was close to zero (0.08 g N m?2) throughout the season. At the catchment scale, streamlet water showed increased nitrate concentrations with typical flushing peaks in spring and autumn, provided more than one fifth of the catchment area was covered by Alnus shrubs. We conclude that the expansion of Alnus rapidly converts centuries-old, N-poor grassland into N saturated shrubland, irrespective of elevation, and it reduces the C storage potential of the landscape because the Alnus dominance constrains re-establishment of a natural montane forest.  相似文献

Cellobiose lipids of yeast fungi Cryptococcus huminola and Pseudozyma fusiformata have similar fungicidal activities against different yeast, including pathogenic Cryptococcus and Candida species. Basidiomycetic yeast reveals maximum sensitivity to these preparations; e.g., cells of cryptococcus Filobasidiella neoformans almost completely die after 30-min incubation in a glycolipid solution at a concentration of 0.02 mg/ml. The same effect toward ascomycetous yeast, including pathogenic Candida species, is achieved only at five to eight times higher concentrations of glycolipids. The cellobiose lipid from P. fusiformata, which, unlike glycolipid from Cr. humicola, has hydroxycaproic acid residue as O-subtituent of cellobiose and additional 15-hydroxy group in aglycone, inhibits the growth of the studied mycelial fungi more efficiently than the cellobiose lipid from Cr. humicola.  相似文献

A cytogenetic analysis of plants and tissue cultures of Gentiana lutea, G. punctata, and G. acaulis is performed. It is discovered that in vitro culturing leads to changes in the chromosome number in the calli of the species. The species specificity of the variability of the genomes of the cultured cells is demonstrated. It is established that the cytogenetic structure of a tissue culture depends on the genotype of the initial plants. It is explained that in callus tissue of Gentiana (other than an in vitro culture of G. punctata, derived from a plant of the Breskul population), diploid cells and cells with near-diploid chromosome complements constitute the modal class.  相似文献

Thermal preference is one of the most crucial components of behavioral thermoregulation in ectotherms, and documenting the adaptation of thermal preference carries great importance for studying the evolution of thermal biology. However there are not many studies focusing on the adaptation of thermal preference in elevational and latitudinal gradients. Isophya rizeensis is a color polymorphic bush cricket species endemic to the mountainous region of northeastern Turkey. Populations of this species are distributed in a wide elevational range between 350 and 2300 m. In this study, we hypothesized that the thermal preference of Isophya rizeensis might follow a countergradient variation where crickets from higher altitudes have higher temperature preferences compared to crickets from lower altitudes. To test this hypothesis, thermal preference values (T pref ) of crickets from three altitudes groups (low, middle and high) were measured with a thermal gradient experiment. Additionally, body temperatures (T b ) and environmental temperatures (T a ) were measured in field. Deviation values of T b and T a from T pref were calculated to investigate the extent of thermoregulation. As Isophya rizeensis is color polymorphic species where morphology pattern changes from lighter to darker types with increasing altitude we also tested whether coloration has any effect on temperature excess (T ex ) and thermoregulation. Thermal preference values did not differ significantly between three groups and also colouration does not influence the extent of thermoregulation in this species. These results indicate that there is not sufficient evidence for the existence of a countergradient selection related with thermal behavior. However, the deviation of body (D b ) and environmental (D a ) temperatures suggest that at higher altitudes thermoregulation might be more efficient than lower altitudes.  相似文献

Nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) concentration in plant organs is an indicator of a balance between carbon sources (i.e., photosynthesis) and sinks (i.e., growth). Understanding how NSC concentrations change with altitude would help determine altitudinal changes in plant growth. This study compared shoot growth and seasonal changes in NSC concentrations of current-year and 1-year-old needles and branch woods between the upper and lower distribution limits of subalpine conifers Abies veitchii (1600–2000 m a.s.l.), A. mariesii (2000–2400 m a.s.l.), and Pinus pumila (2400–2800 m a.s.l.) in Japan. The lengths of 1-year-old shoots were shorter at the upper distribution limits for the three species, and concentrations and branch woods were all high in spring but decreased toward summer, increasing from summer to autumn. No clear difference was found for either parameter between upper and lower distribution limits for each species. Therefore, this study suggests that growth reduction at the upper distribution limits is due to reduction of both sink and source activities, with similar degrees for each species. However, further studies of sink and source activities, such as temperature-dependent photosynthesis and growth traits, are necessary to reveal clearly the cause of this growth reduction in high altitudes.  相似文献

The most important center of speciation in the genus Gagea is thought to be in Central Asia. Here, we focus on species diversity in southeastern Kazakhstan (around Almaty, Ili-Alatau range of the Western Tian-Shan mountains). We studied an elevational transect, reaching from lowland steppes to the alpine zone (500–2750 m a. s. l.), and carried out detailed morphological and molecular investigations for populations of Gagea spp. Nine species were identified in different altitudinal zones; one of these (Gagea almaatensis) is described as new to science. We could detect two altitudinal contact zones between closely related species: G. filiformis and G. granulosa (sect. Minimae), and G. almaatensis and G. kuraminica (sect. Gagea). Morphological and molecular investigations (ITS data and cpDNA networks) indicate ongoing hybridization of co-occurring G. filiformis into G. granulosa and putative bidirectional hybridization events between G. almaatensis and G. kuraminica.  相似文献

Understanding the factors driving the diet breadth of phytophagous insects remains one of the main questions in ecological research. In this study we explored the diet breadth and plant-insect associations in the plume moth Lioptilodes friasi Vargas & Parra (Lepidoptera: Pterophoridae). This phytophagous insect was originally described in association with a single host species, Haplopappus foliosus (Asteraceae), a native shrub of the Chilean Mediterranean matorral. In order to address the breadth of host plant choice, we surveyed other Haplopappus species growing along the elevation gradient of central Chile from sea level to 2600 m. We were able to obtain L. friasi adults from five additional Haplopappus species: Haplopappus chrysantemifolius and Haplopappus decurrens from the coastal zone, Haplopappus multifolius and Haplopappus schumanii from the mid-elevation zone, and Haplopappus scrobiculatus at high elevation. Our results demonstrate that the genus-specialized endophagous herbivore L. friasi has a wider distribution and climatic tolerance than previously described. Its biogeographical range extends from the lowland coastal habitats up to the Andean subnival level. We propose that shared flower phenotypic traits such as morphology and chemical composition may have allowed the colonization of closely related Haplopappus species in central Chile, the expansion of which is limited by the harsh high elevation conditions.  相似文献

Larval host plants can be the main resource underlying the distribution (including altitudinal ranges) of specialized phytophagous insects such as butterflies. Strymon flavaria (Ureta) (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae: Theclinae: Eumaeini) is a little-known hairstreak endemic to the arid belt at about 3000–3500 m elevation on the western slopes of the Andes of northern Chile. The hemiparasitic shrub Krameria lappacea (Dombey) Burdet and Simpson is here recorded as the first host plant known for S. flavaria, representing also the first record of the association of a species of Strymon Hübner with the plant family Krameriaceae. Females of S. flavaria lay eggs on flower buds and unripe fruits of K. lappacea; the larva eats mostly these plant organs. Field observations revealed that S. flavaria is a host-specialist hairstreak, since females lay eggs only on K. lappacea. These findings suggest that the altitudinal range of S. flavaria could be the result of its specialized association with K. lappacea, as this shrub is also mostly restricted to elevations above 3000 m in the Andes of northern Chile. The implications of this finding for the ecology and conservation of S. flavaria are discussed.  相似文献

Andean orogeny and the ecological changes that followed promoted diversification in plant and animal lineages since the Early Miocene. The angiosperm genus Caiophora (Loasaceae, subfam. Loasoideae) comprises around 50 species that are endemic to South America. These are distributed from southern Ecuador to Central Chile and Argentina. Bee pollination and distribution at low-intermediate elevations probably represent the ancestral condition in the lineage that includes Caiophora and its allied genera. The majority of Caiophora species grow at high elevations in the Andes, where some depend on vertebrate pollination. Previous studies did not resolve phylogenetic relationships within Caiophora, which precluded the dating of the origin and divergence of this group. We used markers of one nuclear (ITS) and one plastid region (trnS GCU -trnG UUC ) to solve phylogenetic relationships among 19 Caiophora species (including different accessions). We also included 10 species of the allied genera Blumenbachia and Loasa. Aosa rostrata and Xylopodia klaprothioides were used as outgroups. Phylogenetic reconstruction strongly supports the monophyly of Caiophora, and although several clades within this genus are poorly supported, our study yielded a better infra-generic resolution than previous studies. The origin of Caiophora is dated to the Early-Middle Miocene and can be related to the uplift of the Cordilleras Frontal and Principal and to Pacific marine transgressions. According to our estimations, Caiophora began to diversify during the Middle-Late Miocene and this unfolding proceeded eastwards during the Pliocene and the Pleistocene, in parallel to the uplift of different Andean mountain ranges.  相似文献

Hybridisation is an important evolutionary process. The investigation of hybridisation along elevational gradients, with their steep abiotic and biotic clines, provides insight into the adaptation and maintenance of species in adjacent habitats. The rare Senecio hercynicus and its spreading congener S. ovatus are vertically vicariant species that show hybridisation in their range overlaps. In the present study, we used AFLP fingerprinting of 689 individuals from 38 populations to analyse population structure and introgression patterns along four elevational transects (650–1350 m) in the Bavarian Forest National Park, Gemany. Subsequently, we searched for loci putatively under divergent selection that may maintain ‘pure’ species despite hybrid formation by identifying taxon-specific alleles. A maximum-likelihood based hybrid index shows that the overall genetic differentiation among all populations was very low with a vanishingly small number of pure parental individuals. Almost 75% of the investigated individuals were classified as backcrosses towards S. ovatus. The highest S. hercynicus ancestry was found in the uppermost populations of two transects. Further, we found seven taxon-specific alleles being under divergent selection that correlated with climatic variables and deviating from neutral introgression. According to our results, hybridisation of S. ovatus and S. hercynicus has reached an advanced state of genetic swamping and there seems to be no driving force that is strong enough to keep both species as different lineages. Rather, S. ovatus appears to benefit through putatively adaptive introgression.  相似文献

Subtropical forests in montane ecosystems grow under a wide range of environmental conditions. However, little is known about the growth responses of subtropical trees to climate along ecological gradients. To assess how, and to what extent climate controls tree growth, we analyzed tree responses to climate for 15 chronologies from 4 different species (Schinopsis lorentzii, Juglans australis, Cedrela lilloi, Alnus acuminata) across a variety of environments in subtropical forests from northwestern Argentina (22–28°S, 64–66°W). Using correlation and principal component analysis, site and species differences in tree-growth responses to precipitation and temperature were determined along the elevation gradient from the dry-warm Chaco lowlands to the wet-cool montane Yungas. Our results show that species responses differ according to the severity in climate conditions along the elevation gradient. At sites with unfavorable conditions, mainly located at the extremes of the environmental gradient, responses of different species to climate variations are similar; in contrast, at sites with relatively mild conditions, tree growth displays a large variety of responses reflecting differences in both local environmental conditions and species physiology. Our research suggests that individualistic responses to environmental variability would determine differences in the type and timing of the responses of dominant trees to climate, which ultimately may shift species’ assemblages in montane subtropical regions of South America under future climate changes.  相似文献

In the present experiment a pteridophytic species Azolla and an angiospermic species Vernonia were evaluated on the basis of cellular reactivity for herbicidal action through ongoing concentrations. Initially, both the species recorded a significant activity of IAA-oxidase as mark of IAA metabolism with herbicidal sensitivity. Still, Vernonia species were more affected on 2,4-D mediated auxin catabolism. The loss of auxin concentrations on the tissues by 2,4-D reaction was also reflected on growth parameters including relative growth rate and chlorophyll biosynthesis. In a dose dependent manner Vernonia plants were more affected with loss of chlorophyll content and decline in relative growth rate. On the other hand, both those parameters were adjusted significantly with 2,4-D accumulation in Azolla. The stability of cellular metabolism was documented by significant down regulation of protein and lipid peroxidation with concomitant moderation to superoxide and hydrogen peroxide accumulation. The later two were more vulnerable to damage in the Vernonia plant with profuse accumulation of protein and lipid peroxidation products. Similarly, tissue specific reaction to superoxide and hydrogen peroxide accumulation were distinctly demarcated in two species significantly. As a whole, the cellular responses and metabolite distribution to 2,4-D sensitization are the features to describe bio-indices for aquatic fern species Azolla with comparison to angiospermic species Vernonia.  相似文献
