In some parts of East Africa, spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) live in large groups and at high population densities, and scramble competition among clan members during feeding at large carcasses is reported. By contrast, spotted hyaenas in the Namib Desert of southwestern Africa live in small groups and at low densities. When assembled at carcasses, Namib Desert spotted hyaenas show linear dominance hierarchies. Adult females outrank adult males and usually feed one at a time or with their dependent offspring. Feeding rates at small carcasses in the Namib Desert are approximately equal to those reported in East Africa, but at large carcasses Namib Desert spotted hyaenas show linear dominance hierarchies. Adult females outrank adult males and usually feed one at a time or with their dependent offspring. Feeding rates at small carcasses in the Namib Desert are approximately equal to those reported in East Africa, but at large carcasses Namib Desert spotted hyaenas feed significantly more slowly. Differences in plasma testosterone and androstenedione concentrations in male spotted hyaenas belonging to various reproductive and social categories 4 clans resident in South Africa and Botswana suggest that central-immigrant males have the highest concentrations of androgens, reflecting their roles as mating males. Social inhibition of reproductive function may occur in other males. A reversal in the ratio of testosterone: androstenedione occurs at puberty in most individuals, testosterone becoming the dominant hormone, especially in males that have procured mating rites. Cubs of either sex had low testosterone concentrations, except for a 4-day-old male that displayed adult concentrations, which were accompanied by a temporary testicular descent. Plasma testosterone concentrations in females largely reflected ovarian activity and showed no correlation with androstenedione concentrations. Female cubs had androstenedione concentrations significantly higher than those in all other social categories except for the central-immigrant males. The androgen profiles presented here suggest that the key to the behavioural dominance of female spotted hyaenas over males may lie with the neonatal developmental stages, rather than with the androgen patterns of adult animals.  相似文献

Africa's large predator guild competes for a limited food resource base. To minimize the degree of competition, we hypothesized that the two largest members of this guild and its fiercest competitors, the lion and the spotted hyaena, would partition their activity patterns to avoid interacting. We used 96‐h continuous follows of focal animal(s) to determine when the six radio‐collared lions and eight radio‐collared spotted hyaenas, reintroduced into Addo Elephant National Park in 2003/2004, were active using a binomial measure of activity which was defined as movements >100 m during each hourly period. Contrary to our predictions, lions and hyaenas did not partition their activity times, probably because of their current low population densities. Both species exhibited a crepuscular activity pattern although hyaenas were far less active during daylight. A sub‐adult lioness minimized competitive interactions by becoming diurnal. This is likely to be a common strategy for lions that have been expelled from their natal pride to become nomadic, as it allows them to minimize kleptoparasitic and agonistic interactions from competitively dominant conspecifics and competitors. The increase in testosterone that occurs in males upon reaching sexual maturity, darkens their pelage and causes them to be more directly impacted by the heat, and thereby affords females an opportunity to escape from males during hot temperatures. Similarly, the longer pelage of young hyaenas restricts their activity to the cooler night‐time.  相似文献

A heterologous double-antibody radioimmunoassay has been validated for prolactin in plasma and pituitary preparations of T. vulpecula. Serial dilutions of crude pituitary homogenates and plasmas from several marsupials and purified prolactin from the tammar, Macropus eugenii, showed parallel dose response curves. In both male and female possums plasma prolactin concentrations increased in response to a single intravenous injection of thyrotrophin releasing hormone. Plasma prolactin concentrations were measured in six lactating females (June-November) and in four non-lactating females (July-October). In the following year prolactin levels were also measured in 11 possums with young less than 50 days old and in 24 possums with young aged between 100 and 145 days. In early lactation prolactin concentrations were low (less than 8 ng/ml) but increased to high levels (greater than 30 ng/ml) by 120 days and remained high until about 160 days of lactation. Thereafter concentrations declined although the young continued to take milk from the mother for a further 30-50 days. The changes in plasma prolactin concentrations throughout lactation are very similar to those described for the tammar, and this unusual pattern appears to be common to marsupials. Non-lactating possums showed no consistent changes in plasma prolactin concentrations between July and October.  相似文献

We investigated a new method of urine collection in the common marmoset. We entered the cage as soon as the light cycle started in the breeding room and collected urine from the animal directly without any restraint. We were able to take separate samples from completely different individuals housed together for behavioral studies in the same cage. Urine and blood samples were taken from individuals from late pregnancy through postpartum nursing period. Cortisol and prolactin concentrations measured in urine were compared to those measured in blood to evaluate this collection method. LH/CG level in the urine samples was also measured. Urine data in females indicated a tendency toward high cortisol values during late pregnancy, a sharp drop before parturition, and increase after delivery. In females cortisol levels measured in blood closely resembled concentrations measured in urine. Urine cortisol in males clearly indicated an increase postpartum, but the increase was not indicated in plasma. Plasma and urine prolactin concentrations in females made a similar increase during lactation. Male's plasma prolactin clearly indicated an increase directly proportional to strong behavioral contact with the infant. We also confirmed hormonal changes during pregnancy, and postpartum ovulation and subsequent pregnancies, from urine LH/CG data. We found this method extremely useful because of the high correlation between cortisol, prolactin and LH/CG data from blood and urine. Blood samples from male hamsters (Phodopus) during their mate's gestation and early lactation show that key hormones important in maternal behavior are also changing in males and differ for two closely related species with different levels of paternal care. Results of study 1 were consistent with a relationship between higher prolactin, lower testosterone and paternal behavior during early lactation in P. campbelli and provided no evidence for similar hormonal changes in P. sungorus. Study 2 sampled males before or after the birth. Prolactin did not increase until at least one day after the birth in P. campbelli but was high at the end of the pregnancy in P. sungorus. Increasing testosterone concentrations in P. campbelli as the birth approached were consistent with mate guarding, high testosterone concentrations on L5 were consistent with paternal aggression in defense of the litter, and the drop in testosterone after the birth was consistent with reduced aggression toward the new pups. Results confirmed that cortisol concentrations were reduced following the establishment of a pair-bond and found that P. campbelli males had elevated cortisol before the birth. Results support the hypothesis that mammalian paternal behavior has a hormonal basis which is analogous to maternal behavior.  相似文献

Female Spotted hyaenas mimic the male in the possession of a peniform and highly erectile clitoris and false scrotum. Sex hormones have been assayed in the blood plasma, gonads and adrenal glands of male and female Spotted hyaenas and in the blood plasma of Striped and Brown hyaenas. Although the testicular concentration of testosterone greatly exceeds that of the ovaries in Spotted hyaenas, there is no significant difference between the sexes in the mean plasma levels of this hormone, or of the other androgen assayed, andro-stenedione. In contrast, male Brown and Striped hyaenas have far higher plasma concentrations of testosterone than females.
Testosterone levels in twin female Spotted hyaena foetuses were similar to the mean for adult females and it is suggested that high foetal androgen levels are responsible for the appearance of the male sexual facies in adult female Spotted hyaenas. The high plasma androgen levels recorded in adult females may also be associated with their aggression and dominance of males.  相似文献

Spotted hyaenas Crocuta crocuta were once considered mere scavengers; however, detailed research revealed that they are very efficient predators. Information on what spotted hyaenas actually prefer to prey on and what they avoid is lacking, as well as the factors that influence prey selection. Data from 14 published and one unpublished study from six countries throughout the distribution of the spotted hyaena were used to determine which prey species were preferred and which were avoided using Jacobs' index. The mean of these values for each species was used as the dependent variable in multiple regression, with prey abundance and prey body mass as predictive variables. In stark contrast to the rest of Africa's large predator guild, spotted hyaenas do not preferentially prey on any species. Also surprisingly, only buffalo, giraffe and plains zebra are significantly avoided. Spotted hyaena most prefer prey within a body mass range of 56–182 kg, with a mode of 102 kg. The dietary niche breadth of the spotted hyaena is similar to that of the lion Panthera leo , and the two species have a 58.6% actual prey species overlap and a 68.8% preferred prey species overlap. These results highlight the flexible and unselective nature of spotted hyaena predation and are probably a reason for the species' success throughout its range, despite a large degree of dietary overlap with lions.  相似文献

Histological evidence suggests that the spotted hyaena ( Crocuta crocuta ) is polyoestrous, and that corpora lutea are persistent and are not visible after one birth interval. Multiple generations of corpora lutea therefore represent recurring 'infertile' oestrous cycles. Plasma oestradiol-17β and progesterone concentrations fluctuate concurrently, with the highest concentrations occurring during pregnancy. The reduced mean oestradiol-17β concentrations observed during lactation suggest reduced ovarian steroid secretion during this reproductive phase. However, signs of follicular activity in some lactating females indicate that endocrine activity may still occur during lactation. The presence of multiple 'infertile' cycles and some degree of follicular development during lactation explains the ability of this species to fall pregnant soon after the loss of a litter, and provides a mechanism for overcoming the low recruitment rate so characteristic of this species.  相似文献

By using a specific homologous double-antibody RIA, physiological and pharmacological variation in prolactin plasma levels were studied in the rabbit. The study of plasma levels during 24 h period demonstrated the presence of a rhythmic secretion of prolactin with higher values between 15.00 and 19.00 h. Prolactin plasma levels were low in neonatal rabbits and increased gradually with the age of the animals. In adult rabbits a significant higher prolactin plasma concentration was found in female animals. Blood levels fluctuate during the first half of pregnancy but the mean levels were higher than those found during the second half of gestation. A remarkable increase of plasma levels was observed 24 h before parturition and during lactation. Plasma prolactin concentrations increased after injection of both chlorpromazine and sulpiride. The hyperprolactinaemic effect of sulpiride was abolished by bromocriptine.  相似文献

Single venous blood samples were collected from 52 hyaenas and serial samples via indwelling jugular catheters from 8 hyaenas. Social status of the hyaenas was unknown. Radioimmunoassay estimations were specific for testosterone, androstenedione, cortisol and LH. No significant differences could be found between the sexes for concentrations of testosterone (adult males 2.9 +/- 1.3 nmol/l; adult females (non-pregnant) 1.6 +/- 0.3 nmol/l). Androstenedione concentrations in sub-adult males were significantly lower than those in females (2.3 +/- 0.05 and 5.5 +/- 1.2 nmol/l). Testosterone and androstenedione concentrations were significantly higher in parous pregnant than in parous non-pregnant females (4.3 +/- 1.4 and 1.6 +/- 0.3; and 23.7 +/- 11.6 and 6.7 +/- 0.9 nmol/l respectively). Both LHRH and hCG elicited elevated androgen concentrations in females in different reproductive categories. Androgens are produced by the ovary in the absence of follicular or luteal structures, indicating androgen production by the interstitial tissue of the ovarian stroma.  相似文献

Progesterone in Antarctic fur seals was undetectable from 1-2 days before parturition to 4-6 days after parturition. There was a rapid increase in progesterone to 20 ng/ml between 6 and 10 days post partum and this increase coincided with peak concentrations of oestradiol-17 beta at the time normally associated with oestrus and mating in this species. Newly formed corpora lutea were present in the ovaries by Day 9 post partum even though the seals had been isolated in an enclosure and not mated. Thereafter, progesterone remained detectable, but at a low concentration (5 ng/ml) throughout embryonic diapause. A similar pattern was observed in unmated females which suggests they enter a period of pseudopregnancy. Progesterone increased to 35 ng/ml between late February and mid-March, indicating activation of the corpus luteum at the end of diapause, and then declined slowly through the remainder of gestation. Plasma prolactin, measured against a human prolactin standard, was elevated from 1-2 days before parturition and peaked at 0-3 days post partum. It then declined slowly throughout the post-partum period and remained at a low level throughout embryonic diapause. Prolactin concentration declined to undetectable at the end of diapause and before the end of lactation. Reduction of prolactin secretion by injections of bromocriptine from Days 3 to 5 post-partum terminated lactation. Mothers, which normally leave their pups to feed at sea on about Day 7 post partum, did not continue to lactate beyond Day 7 although this did not appear to be associated with reduced prolactin secretion. Bromocriptine treatment appeared to prevent the post-ovulatory surge of progesterone although there was no long-term effect of bromocriptine on progesterone secretion during the early stages of embryonic diapause/pseudopregnancy. This study has shown that prolactin is an important hormone for maintaining early lactation in the fur seal and it probably also has a role in the control of ovulation and luteal development. Prolactin does not appear to be implicated in the control of lactation cycles in fur seals. Changes in plasma progesterone during the annual cycle show that the pattern in fur seals resembles that of some carnivores with embryonic diapause.  相似文献

Reproductive seasonality was examined in an equatorial population of free-living spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) in Kenya. The study population was observed continuously for 10 years, during which time the dates of all births, conceptions, weanings, and cub deaths were recorded. Local prey abundance was estimated two to four times per month, and rainfall was recorded daily throughout the study period. Births occurred during every month of the year, but a distinct trough in births occurred from February to May. This trough occurred approximately one gestation period after the phase of the annual cycle during which prey animals were least abundant in the home range of the hyaenas, and conceptions occurred most frequently when food abundance was greatest. Neither rainfall nor cub mortality were correlated with births or conceptions. Thus, although spotted hyaenas are capable of breeding throughout the year, they exhibit a moderate degree of seasonality that most likely reflects responses to seasonal variation in energy availability.  相似文献

Observations are presented on food, foraging behaviour, ranging and some social behaviour patterns of the striped hyaena; these observations are compared with similar ones on spotted hyaenas. Striped hyaenas are more omnivorous than spotted ones, scavenging a great deal and eating insects, fruits and small vertebrate prey. However, the diets of the two species have several food species in common, and there is competition in the relatively small area where the geographical ranges and habitats of the two hyaenas overlap. Striped hyaenas are solitary, and they show several behavioural adaptations to this. The relationship between the hyaenas' social organization and resource exploitation is discussed.  相似文献

Five pony mares were blood sampled during late pregnancy, foaling and early lactation. An homologous assay for horse prolactin was used to measure plasma prolactin concentrations in these samples. Regular estimates of cyclic activity were also made. Plasma prolactin concentrations rose markedly in the last week of pregnancy and remained high although variable in early lactation, before declining to basal levels by 1-2 months post partum. All mares showed a post-partum oestrus 7.0 +/- 0.9 days after parturition. One mare whose foal died shortly after birth showed a rapid decline in plasma prolactin values after death of the foal and an early oestrous period (4 days after parturition). The pattern of prolactin changes reported for the mare are in agreement with those reported for other mammalian species.  相似文献

A 4-year study of the social organization of spotted hyaenas in a clan of 60–80 individuals showed that there is a separate dominance hierarchy within each sex. One female and her descendants dominated all others; matrilineal rankings were stable over time because maternal rank is inherited. Cubs of higher ranking females were able to feed at kills in competition with adults more successfully than other cubs, and male offspring of the alpha female were the only males able to dominate adult females. The mating system is highly polygynous: only the behaviourally dominant male was seen to mate, though all other resident males regularly courted females. Among females, there was no correlation between reproductive success and age, size, or social rank. It is postulated that the unusually aggressive sons of the alpha female would probably be highly successful competitors in the context of a polygynous mating system. A primary consequence of female dominance over males is that females and their young have priority of access to food in a highly competitive feeding situation. This competition may have been the selective force that produced female dominance and the associated syndrome of female virilization that is characteristic of the species. Cooperation among related females may be the basis for the matrilineal system, as has been suggested for certain primate species.  相似文献

This paper presents preliminary evidence that kleptoparasitism by spotted hyaenas may influence optimal hunting group size of lions. In the absence of adult male lions, hyaenas can drive female and subadult lions off their kills provided they outnumber the lions by a factor of four. Hence the larger the group of lions on the kill, the greater their chance of defending their food against invading hyaenas. At Savuti, where there was a shortage of adult male lions, the groups of female and subadult lions lost almost 20% of their food to hyaenas. Losses were most frequent for those living in small groups. These lions were often satiated by the time the hyaenas acquired the kill, so the hyaenas did not cause immediate need, yet constituted a constant energy drain on lions by forcing them to hunt more frequently. The implications of these observations for modelling optimal hunting group size of lions are discussed.  相似文献

Unlike biparental bird and rodent species, mating and parenting occur simultaneously in cotton-top tamarins, Saguinus oedipus, providing a unique model for examining endocrine interactions. This study was designed to determine the relationship of prolactin to testicular androgens during parenting and mating. Specifically we examined (1) the patterns of postpartum prolactin excretion in male and female tamarins with and without infant survival; (2) the relationship between androgen and prolactin levels during the periparturitional period in male tamarins; and (3) male hormonal response to the postpartum mating that occurs simultaneously with paternal care. All females showed an elevation in prolactin during the first week postpartum and when infants died, female prolactin levels decreased significantly. Infant survival during the first 15 days did not influence male levels of prolactin, cortisol, or the testicular androgens testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Prolactin did not show an inverse relationship with any of the androgens (testosterone, DHT) studied during the postpartum period. No significant differences in hormones were found between prepartum levels and the first, second, and third 5-day blocks postpartum for all 10 males. Males who had infant-care experience showed an increase in testosterone during the first 5 days postpartum and prolactin levels correlated with the number of previous births a male had experienced. However, the most significant changes in testosterone occurred in males whose mates ovulated during the first 15 days following birth in contrast to males whose mates ovulated later than 15 days. These results indicate that unlike females, male tamarins are not showing hormonal changes in response to infants. Urinary androgens did not show an inverse relationship to prolactin in male tamarins, but were elevated concurrent with the female's fertile period.  相似文献

During a long-term field study of a free-living population of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), blood samples were drawn at regular intervals from marked females via femoral venipuncture, and plasma progesterone (P) and prolactin (PRL) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Marked fluctuations with season and reproductive condition occurred in circulating levels of both hormones, with peak levels occurring during the spring breeding season. Two peaks in P concentrations were observed each spring, the first occurring during pregnancy, and the second during lactation. Peak PRL levels in females were also reached during the lactation interval, midway between the two P peaks. Analysis of repeated measures from individual females showed a marked decline in circulating P around the time of parturition. Juveniles had lower mean P levels than adults, and yearlings had lower peak levels during their initial reproductive episodes than older females did. The observed pattern of P secretion in S. beecheyi differs from that known for most mammals, but resembles those reported for other ground-dwelling sciurid rodents.  相似文献
