Rostral pores are epidermal invaginations which occur on the internarial region of most chelonians. Representatives of all Recent chelonian families and 67 of the 74 extant genera were examined grossly and/or histologically. Pores are absent only in the families Carettochelyidae, Cheloniidae, and Dermochelyidae. The number and microscopic structure of pores vary markedly within and between taxa. Morphological data suggest that rostral pores could function in mechanoreception. The possible origin and evolution of rostral pores are discussed in the context of other chelonian integumentary speializations.  相似文献

Endothecial cell thickenings were examined in anther macerations of representative species from 210 genera of the Orchidaceae. Nearly all species examined possessed the characteristic thickened walls which, in several tested species, gave a positive reaction to phloroglucinol, indicating the presence of lignin. Four basic thickening types were identified; distribution of the types was found to be largely in agreement with previously recognized suprageneric groups. Type I thickenings are tightly packed channels of loops or helices and were found in the “neottioid” genera, the Apostasioideae, and putatively basal genera in the remaining subfamilies. Because of its occurrence in the Apostasioideae, which is believed to be the most basal subfamily, Type I is hypothesized to be the plesiomorphic thickening type for the remainder of the Orchidaceae. Type II thickenings appear as scattered loops and may be a synapomorphy for the Orchidoideae, as they were found in all genera sampled from the subfamily except Disperis. Type III thickenings are circular in appearance and were found in the Cypripedioideae and in some members of the Spiranthoideae and Epidendroideae. Type IV thickenings show little regular arrangement, appearing to be scattered bars, and were observed primarily in the Epidendroideae and also in some Spiranthoideae. Three subtypes were recognized in Type III and Type IV. Some genera, such as Triphora, Goodyera, and Elythranthera, had thickenings that appeared intermediate between the recognized types. In general, terrestrial genera were found to have regularly arranged, well-developed thickenings, while many epiphytic groups showed congested, irregular, thinner thickenings.  相似文献

Due to contradicting relationships obtained from various morphological and genetic studies, phylogenetic relationships among New World monkey genera are highly disputed. In the present study, we analyzed the presence/absence pattern of 128 SINE integrations in all New World monkey genera. Among them, 70 were specific for only a single genus, whereas another 18 were present in all New World monkey genera. The 40 remaining insertions were informative to elucidate phylogenetic relationships among genera. Several of them confirmed the monophyly of the three families Cebidae, Atelidae and Pitheciidae as well as of the subfamily Callithrichinae. Further markers provided evidence for a sister grouping of Cebidae and Atelidae to the exclusion of Pitheciidae as well as for relationships among genera belonging to Callithrichinae and Atelidae. Although a close affiliation of Saimiri, Aotus and Cebus to Callithrichinae was shown, the relationships among the three genera remained unresolved due to three contradicting insertions.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among the NBS-LRR (nucleotide binding site–leucine-rich repeat) resistance gene homologues (RGHs) from 30 genera and nine families were evaluated relative to phylogenies for these taxa. More than 800 NBS-LRR RGHs were analyzed, primarily from Fabaceae, Brassicaceae, Poaceae, and Solanaceae species, but also from representatives of other angiosperm and gymnosperm families. Parsimony, maximum likelihood, and distance methods were used to classify these RGHs relative to previously observed gene subfamilies as well as within more closely related sequence clades. Grouping sequences using a distance cutoff of 250 PAM units (point accepted mutations per 100 residues) identified at least five ancient sequence clades with representatives from several plant families: the previously observed TIR gene subfamily and a minimum of four deep splits within the non-TIR gene subfamily. The deep splits in the non-TIR subfamily are also reflected in comparisons of amino acid substitution rates in various species and in ratios of nonsynonymous-to-synonymous nucleotide substitution rates (K A/K S values) in Arabidopsis thaliana. Lower K A/K S values in the TIR than the non-TIR sequences suggest greater functional constraints in the TIR subfamily. At least three of the five identified ancient clades appear to predate the angiosperm–gymnosperm radiation. Monocot sequences are absent from the TIR subfamily, as observed in previous studies. In both subfamilies, clades with sequences separated by approximately 150 PAM units are family but not genus specific, providing a rough measure of minimum dates for the first diversification event within these clades. Within any one clade, particular taxa may be dramatically over- or underrepresented, suggesting preferential expansions or losses of certain RGH types within particular taxa and suggesting that no one species will provide models for all major sequence types in other taxa. Among cockroaches in the subfamily of Oxyhaloinae, the adult males produce two essential and successively active chemical signals: the sex pheromone attracting females from a distance secreted by the sternal glands, and the aphrodisiac required for mating which is secreted by the tergal glands. The adult males of the seven species studied, Nauphoeta cinerea, Henschoutedenia flexivitta, Leucophaea maderae, Jagrehnia madecassa, Gromphadorhina portentosa, G. laevigata, and G. chopardi, possess well-developed sternal and tergal glands whose number varies according to the species and methods of mating (three to six sternal glands and four to seven tergal glands). These glands are basically composed of type three glandular units (glandular cell + duct cell) and type 2 cells (modified oenocytes) which exhibit no significant external cuticular modification except for tergite 2 of L. maderae. The extreme variance in development of these glands can be linked to sexual behavior. The hypothesis put forward here is that of a regressive evolution of the tergal glands, related to a modification of the role played by the aphrodisiacs which they secrete.  相似文献

Abstract

Part I deals briefly with the application of the Code rules to family and subfamily names.

In Part II full references are given for all family and subfamily names of Hepaticopsida, some with nomenclatural or taxonomic notes added. There are three lists, each in alphabetical order: A. legitimate names (78 f., 62 subf.), B. illegitimate names (21 f., 10 subf.), and C. invalid names (only those derived from generic names; 17 f., 11 subf.); in total 116 family and 83 subfamily names. Five family names (Choneoleaceae Schust., Conocephalaceae K. Müll., Exormothecaceae K. Müll., Oxymitraceae K. Müll., Perssoniellaceae Schust.) and three subfamily names (Allisonioideae Schust., Cololejeuneoideae Herz., Odontosehismatoideae Buch) are validated by Latin diagnosis. Five subfamily names (Hygrobielloideae (Joerg.) Schust., Isotaehidoideae (Hatch.) Grolle, Makinooideae (Nakai) Grolle, Mastigophoroideae (Nees) Grolle, Pallavicinioideae (Migula) (Grolle) are proposed by change of rank, whereas five other subfamily names (Acromastigoideae Grolle, Blepharostomatoideae Grolle, Cyathodioideae Grolle, Lethocoleoideae Grolle, Notothyladoideae Grolle) are newly proposed.

Part III is a taxonomic arrangement of the hepatic families and subfamilies. For each of the five orders of Hepaticopsida the accepted families (sixty-two in total) are listed alphabetically with full synonymy : Anthocerotales (1), Marchantiales (16), Metzgeriales (8), Calobryales (2), Jungermanniales (35). The accepted subfamilies with their synonyms are added to each family.  相似文献

RNA-OUT, the 69-nucleotide antisense RNA that regulates Tn 10/IS 10 transposition folds into a simple stem-loop structure. The unusually high metabolic stability of RNA-OUT is dependent, in part, on the integrity of its stem-domain: mutations that disrupt stem-domain structure (Class II mutations) render RNA-OUT unstable, and restoration of structure restores stability. Indeed, there is a strong correlation between the thermodynamic and metabolic stabilities of RNA-OUT. We show here that stem-domain integrity determines RNA-OUT's resistance to 3’exoribonucleolytic attack: Class II mutations are almost completely suppressed in Escherichia coli cells lacking its principal 3′ exoribonucleases, ribonuclease II (RNase II) and polynucleotide phosphorylase (PNPase). RNase II and PNPase are individually able to degrade various RNA-OUT species, albeit with different efficiencies: RNA-OUT secondary structure provides greater resistance to RNase II than to PNPase. Surprisingly, RNA-OUT is threefold more stable in wild-type cells than in cells deficient for RNase II activity, suggesting that RNase II somehow lessens RNPase attack on RNA-OUT. We discuss how this might occur. We also show that wild-type RNA-OUT stability changes only twofold across the normal range of physiological growth temperatures (30–44°C) in wild-type cells, which has important implications for IS 10 biology.  相似文献

Ariid monophyly and intrafamilial relationships are investigated based on cladistic analysis of 230 morphological characters. Terminal taxa examined include whenever possible type‐species, or the most morphologically similar species to the type‐species of the nominal genera, and the largest possible number of species, including cleared and stained specimens, available in zoological collections. Previous hypotheses about monophyly of the Ariidae are strongly corroborated by new synapomorphies discovered in the present study. The subfamily Galeichthyinae and the remaining ariids are strongly supported by new morphological characters. The monotypic subfamily Bagreinae is recognized as the sister group to all nongaleichthyin ariids, supported by a large series of exclusive synapomorphies. A new concept of Ariinae is presented: the subfamily is found to be unequivocally monophyletic and includes all ariid genera, except Galeichthys and Bagre. New data supporting the monophyly of the genera included in the Ariinae are introduced and previous hypotheses of monophyly, species composition, morphological definition, and relationships are reviewed and discussed.  相似文献

The coding region of the matK gene was sequenced to infer the phylogeny of the family Magnoliaceae. Phylogenetic analyses of 21 matK sequences representing ten genera of Magnoliaceae and three outgroups suggest relationships among both subfamilies and genera. Monophyly of the subfamily Liriodendroideae (the genus Liriodendron) and the subfamily Magnolioideae is strongly supported, respectively. Within the subfamily Magnolioideae, three clades are formed: (1) the genus Magnlietia, (2) the subgenus Magnolia, and (3) the subgenus Yulania, with the genera Michelia, Paramichelia, Tsoongiodendron, Alcimandra, Kmeria, Parakmeria and Manglietiastrum. However, the genus Magnolia is shown to be a polyphyletic group, and the genus Michelia a paraphyletic group. Relatively low sequence divergences are detected among genera of the the subfamily Magnolioideae, ranging from 0.14% to 1.70%, especially in the tribe Micheliinae (0.14–0.98%). Molecular evidence from matK sequence data suggests that the phylogenetic positions and the delimitation of the eight genera Magnolia, Michelia, Tsoongiodendron, Paramichelia, Alcimandra, Kmeria, Parakmeria and Manglietiastrum need to be reconsidered. Abstract. The antennal morphology of Psylliodes chrysocephala L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), an important pest of oilseed rape ( Brassica napus ), was studied. Two types of tricellular, integumentary glands were found. The common antennal glands are distributed under all sensilla-bearing parts of male and female antennae. The male-specific antennal glands are only located under a glabrous area found on antennomeres 6–10 of male beetles. The common antennal glands are synthetically active in both pre- and post-diapause adults, but the male specific antennal glands are only active in post-diapause (reproductively active) males. During studies of mating behaviour, the antennae of the males were highly active at the beginning and end of copulation, and in response to increased female activity. The male specific antennal glands may secrete a sex pheromone, and the glabrous area on the male antennae could be the release site for such a pheromone.  相似文献

Scanning electron microscopy of intergenicula in members of the subfamily Corallinoideae reveals two distinctive surface morphologies: a Corallina-type (C-type) with round to irregular cell outlines and round trichocyte bases, and a Jania-type (J-type) with elongate, polygonal cell outlines and elongate trichocyte bases with excentric pores. The surface results from the calcified lateral walls of the epithallial cells projecting up from around collapsed protoplasts. Since J-type surfaces and trichocytes only occur in unequivocal members of the tribe Janieae—especially the genera Jania and Haliptilon, the presence of J-type surfaces in questionable members of Corallina reveals that they in fact belong to Haliptilon. Thus the two surface types clarify previously difficult taxonomic distinctions between Haliptilon and Corallina and allow identification to genus from purely vegetative material. Seventeen new combinations in Haliptilon are proposed. These results have considerable biogeographic implications with tropical species found to belong to Haliptilon, and Corallina sensu stricto being recognized primarily as a temperate and cold water genus.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of wax glands (integumentary, stigmatic, and peristigmatic glands) was investigated in larvae, cysts, and adult females and males of species belonging to the genera Porphyrophora, Sphaeraspis, and Eurhizococcus. The general organization and cytological characteristics are similar for all glands studied. Each gland is composed of a single layer of 8 to 40 cells. The glandular cells are characterized by a very large quantity of smooth endoplasmic reticulum which forms dense zones throughout the cytoplasm, but is always placed near the collecting canals in the presence of mitochondria. Each cell has a central canal reservoir which penetrates it deeply and gives rise to a large number of lateral collecting canals, formed by the invagination of the apical plasma membrane. The canals open into a subcuticular cavity forming a common reservoir in which the secretion is accumulated. This reservoir is covered by a modified cuticle formed from the endocuticle and the epicuticle. The endocuticle is composed of a network of fine tubular structures and has many filaments on its surface. The epicuticle is perforated by numerous pores. There is no cuticular duct. The secretion crosses the cuticle in three successive steps. First, it passes through the filaments, then through fine tubular structures of the endocuticle, and finally through the epicuticular pores.  相似文献

Abstract — Gulls (Aves: Larinae) are among the best-studied of birds, yet prior attempts to reconstruct gull relationships have met with little success. In the present study I use 117 characters from the skeleton and 64 from the integument to test gull monophyly and estimate gull phylogeny. One shortest tree, requiring 9747 unweighted changes and having a CI of 0.267, wasLarusis polyphyletic. Although the tree is fully resolved, support for many of the inferred clades is poor. In a comparison of osteological and integumentary evidence, I found that incongruence between the osteological and integumentary character sets accounts for only a minority of the total incongruence observed, and suggest that low between-set incongruence may be a consequence of the low signal-to-noise ratio in each set of characters. I also found that osteological evidence is particularly important for determining higher-level structure, whereas integumentary evidence is important for resolving lower-level relationships within the gull group. Finally, I found that integumentary characters are not dramatically more homoplasious than osteological characters, and argue that casual dismissal of integumentary characters as “too labile” is unwarranted.  相似文献

Laminar hydathodes are known from only three dicot families. InUrticaceae they are associated with minor vein junctions in all five tribes, as surveyed from cleared leaves of 43 species in 30 genera. Only one species lacked hydathodes. Exclusively adaxial hydathodes were found in 28 genera. In tribeElatostemeae, laminar hydathodes inPilea andPellionia species are abaxial, adaxial, or on both surfaces. Guttation was observed in four species.Urtica dioica (adaxial) andPilea pumila (abaxial) were studied anatomically in detail. Hydathodes in the former have normal bundle structure but xylem gaps sometimes occur. In the latter, phloem is displaced in three previously undescribed ways: 1) ends abruptly near hydathode, 2) curves into connecting vein at adjacent junction, or 3) departs xylem, skirts hydathode independently, and rejoins adjacent xylem strand. Laminar hydathodes are a unifying character of theUrticaceae, and they also strengthen its close relationship to theMoraceae.  相似文献

Stem and leaf anatomical characters of succulent plants in families of the order Caryophyllales were examined to determine phylogenetic and evolutionary trends within these families. Wide-band tracheids, novel tracheids having wide secondary walls hypothesized to prevent cell collapse under water stress, were found in three families–Aizoaceae, Cactaceae, and Portulacaceae. Wide-band tracheids are hypothesized to be a unique adaptation to severe drought conditions prevalent in the areas of origin for these families. Species of 89 genera of Aizoaceae were examined for the occurrence of these tracheids. If present, wide-band tracheids occurred only in leaves. Of the five subfamilies examined, these tracheids were found only in the subfamily Ruschioideae, but not in the putative basal genera of the ruschioids. The presence of wide-band tracheids is an apomorphic character for genera of Ruschioideae with the exception of the basal genera, and also suggests that further characters are needed to understand the alliance of the Apatesia and Cleretum groups with other ruschioid groups. Gross and histological examination of all extant families of turtles revealed that the buccopharyngeal mucosa is morphologically highly varied. The tongues of aquatic species have small lingual papillae or lack them entirely, while terrestrial species have tongues with numerous glandular papillae. The pharynx and the esophagus also have papillae in some species. These either facilitate swallowing in which case they are long, pointed, keratinized, and occur commonly in marine turtles, or they are vascular and nonkeratinized, facilitate respiratory gas exchange and are found in the Trionychidae, Dermatemyidae, and Carettochelyidae. The morphology of the buccopharyngeal mucosa of turtles reflects their diet, feeding behavior, habitat, and relationships. Convergence in the morphology of the buccopharyngeal mucosa occurs among families, especially among the Emydidae and other familes of turtles. Intergeneric parallelism is also seen within the Emydidae.  相似文献

It is plausible that specialized ecological interactions constrain geographic ranges. We address this question in neotropical bees, Centris and Epicharis, that collect oils from flowers of Calceolariaceae, Iridaceae, Krameriaceae, Malpighiaceae, Plantaginaceae, or Solanaceae, with different species exploiting between one and five of these families, which either have epithelial oil glands or hair fields. We plotted the level of oil‐host specialization on a clock‐dated phylogeny for 22 of the 35 species of Epicharis and 72 of the 230 species of Centris (genera that are not sister genera) and calculated geographic ranges (km2) for 23 bee species based on collection data from museum specimens. Of the oil‐offering plants, the Malpighiaceae date to the Upper Cretaceous, whereas the other five families are progressively younger. The stem and crown groups of the two bee genera date to the Cretaceous, Eocene, and Oligocene. Shifts between oil hosts from different families are common in Centris, but absent in Epicharis, and the direction is from flowers with epithelial oil glands to flowers with oil hairs, canalized by bees’ oil‐collecting apparatuses, suitable for piercing epithelia or mopping oil from hair fields. With the current data, a link between host specialization and geographic range size could not be detected.  相似文献
