Rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were injected intraperitoneally with 2 different Discocotyle sagittata extracts dissolved in PBS and subsequently exposed to controlled infection. Immunization resulted in significantly reduced (p < 0.0001) worm intensities in > 50% of vaccinated fish (response arbitrarily defined as parasite burdens < mean control intensity - 1 SD), irrespective of the immunization regime (different parasite extracts, dosing and application schedules) employed. The protective effect of worm extract applied in Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) did not differ significantly from extract given in PBS. Vaccination with embryonated parasite eggs extract and with FCA alone did not result in partial immunity, suggesting the observed protective effect is specific. Immunized fish had significantly higher specific antibody titres at the time of dissection (as determined by ELISA) than both naive and control fish. Overall, a significant negative correlation was found between antibody titres and worm burdens, suggesting immunoglobulins are implicated in mediating partial immunity. Western blot tests indicated the 2 different worm extracts used to immunize fish share antigens, but each one primarily induced recognition of a distinct band (30 and 38 kDa). Immunization seems to promote a shift between 2 equilibria, rather than progressively increasing protection. This would explain why boosting did not increase immunity, and why 2 different extracts primarily inducing recognition of 2 distinct antigens provide similar degrees of protection. Although several other non-specific and cellular factors are likely to be involved in controlling parasite numbers, it cannot be excluded that antibodies could be involved in mediating the observed partial immunity.  相似文献

Over the past 3 decades, North Sea Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) have exhibited variable length‐at‐age along with declines in spawning stock biomass and timing of maturity. Multiple factors affecting growth and development in fish acted on this economically important stock over the same period including warming waters and an intensive fishery. Here, we employ North Sea cod as a model population, exploring how a physiologically relevant temperature metric (the growing degree‐day, GDD; °C day) can be used to compare year‐classes on a physiologically relevant time‐scale, disentangling influences of climate (thermal history) on observed length‐at‐age trends. We conclude that the trends in North Sea cod length‐at‐age observed during the last three decades can be explained by a combination of temperature‐dependent growth increases and a trend toward earlier maturation, the latter likely induced by the intensive fishing pressure, and possibly evidence of fisheries‐induced evolution.  相似文献

The effects of size-selective fishing mortality on the growth of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhuu L.) in the southern Gulf of St Lawrence were investigated and compared between: (1) a period when fishing mortality was relatively high, growth was relatively rapid, and abundance low (1967–1972 year classes): and (2) a period when fishing mortality was lower, growth was slow, and density high (1977–1982 year classes). Cod first entered the fishery at age 3 during both periods. The 1967–1972 year classes (fast growing) were fully recruited to the fishery by age 5 or 6 and the fishery removed over twice as many fish from the lower than upper quartiles of length-at-age distributions for cod 4 to 10 years old (disproportionately high exploitation of slow-growing fish). In contrast. the 1977–1982 year classes (slow growing) did not fully recruit to the fishery until age 9 or 10 and the fishery removed four times as many fish from the upper than lower quartiles of the length-at-age distributions for 4- to 10-year-old cod (disproportionately high exploitation of fast-growing fish). The reduced mean lengths-at-age of the 1977–1982 year classes compared with the 1967–I972 year-classes is consistent with the different patterns of exploitation of fast- and slow-growing fish for the two periods.  相似文献

The helminth endoparasite fauna in four Arctic charr morphs, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), small benthivorous (SB), large benthivorous (LB), planktivorous (PL) and piscivorous (PI) charr, from Thingvallavatn, Iceland consisted of: Crepidostomum farionis (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae); Diplosttomum sp. (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae); Eubothrium salvelini; Diphyllobothrium dendriticum; D. ditremum (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidae); Proteocephalus longicollis (Cestoda: Proteocepha-lidae): and Philonema oncorhynchi (Nematoda: Filariidae). The morphs exhibited distinctive patterns in prevalences and parasite burdens (mean intensity and mean relative density of parasites). SB charr had high prevalence and parasite burden of the eye fluke Diplostomum sp. and none to very light infections of the other parasite species. LB charr had relatively high prevalence and parasite burden of the intestinal fluke C. farionis , whereas infections of the remaining parasite species were light to moderate. PL and PI charr had high prevalences and worm burdens of Diphyllobothrium spp. and P. longicollis . PL charr differed from PI charr in higher worm burden off P. longicollis and lighter burden of £. salvelini . Prevalences of P. oncorhynchi were high in PL and PI charr. Association of parasite intensities and age and length offish were investigated. The different infection patterns among the morphs agree well with their partitioning in food and habitat utilization, and confirm that there is a high degree of ecological segregation between the morphs. The results demonstrate the importance of ecological factors influencing transmission efficiency of parasites to the fish host.  相似文献

The spirurid nematode, Protospirura muricola, is of intrinsic interest as a rodent model of gastric nematode infections. Since worm burdens can be very heavy in nature, density dependent processes may constrain parasite growth. Laboratory mice (BKW) were exposed to varying doses of infective larvae of P. muricola in the range 5 to 40 third-stage larvae (L3), in four separate experiments in which progressively higher doses were utilized. All mice were culled 60 days after infection and a total of 518 worms (226 male and 292 female worms) was recovered, measured and weighed. Overall survival was 58.9%, but survival declined significantly with increasing dose by approximately 21% (from 66% at 5 L3 per mouse to 52% at 40 L3 per mouse). The length and weight of worms correlated positively in both sexes. Total worm biomass increased linearly with increasing numbers of worms. However, whilst the length and weight of male worms declined with increasing worm burden (8.4 and 24.6% respectively), female worms were less affected, only length showing a significant reduction with increasing parasite burden (16.0%). Therefore, increasing worm burdens impeded growth of P. muricola, but reduction in length and weight were relatively small in relation to the overall size of this nematode. Increasing worm burdens were associated with loss of host weight and reduction in stomach weight and worm burdens in excess of 20 exerted a measurable cost to the host, which in the field, may be associated with loss of overall host fitness.  相似文献

The digenean Allocreadium transversale (Rud.) has been recorded once previously in Great Britain. During work on the feeding of Cobitis taenia (L.) it was found to be a frequently occurring gut parasite. Great variation occurred in its seasonal level of incidence and mean worm burden, indicating a rapid turnover and replacement of the parasite in the fish. No significant relationship could be shown between the level of infection and age of the fish; but a highly significant relationship occurred between incidence of infection and fish age.  相似文献

A high growth rate for Arcto-Norwegian cod, Gadus morhua, in the Barents Sea and adjacent areas from the larva period to the 0-group enhances survival and ultimately recruitment to the fishery. However, it appeared that high growth rates for a cohort through the 0-group were not continued as the cohort ages. Based on survey data, there was a significant negative correlation between the average length at the 0-group and its average length at ages 2 through 8. We provided evidence suggesting that this phenomenon was caused by the inter-annual variability in inflow of warm, prey-rich Atlantic water into the Barents Sea from the Norwegian Sea. Enhanced inflow provided favorable conditions for cod growth during the larva and juvenile pelagic intervals. However, this same strong inflow carried a proportion of the cohort farther to the east in the Barents Sea, where the bottom water is colder than in the west. The colder conditions experienced by such cohorts, as compared to cohorts that have a more westerly settlement, led to slower growth prior to age 2. Slow growth during this interval appeared to be the reason for these cohorts' relatively smaller mean length at older ages.  相似文献

A mathematical model was developed to describe the dynamics of the parasitic stages of Oesophagostomum dentatam in pigs. An immigration-death model with constant establishment, development and death rates was fitted to L3, L4 and adult worm burdens observed in a single-infection experiment. Female worm length was modelled by a function of worm age and total worm burden, while worm egg production (eggs per gram faeces per female worm) was modelled by a function of worm age and worm length. The model was then used to predict worm burdens observed in a trickle-infection experiment. The predicted worm burdens were much higher than those observed, suggesting that worm death rates were higher during the trickle infection. After increusing worm death rates to fit the observed worm burdens, female worm lengths and egg production in the trickle infection were predicted. At the medium- and high-dose rates, predicted worm lengths and, thus, egg preduction were lower than observed, while at the low-dose rate predicted egg production was too high. It appeared that in the trickle infections, total worm burden had less influence on observed female worm length and egg production than in the single infections. The results suggest that the demography of O. dentatum in pigs differs between single and trickle infections.  相似文献

Predation is a powerful agent in the ecology and evolution of predator and prey. Prey may select multiple habitats whereby different genotypes prefer different habitats. If the predator is also habitat-specific the prey may evolve different habitat occupancy. Drastic changes can occur in the relation of the predator to the evolved prey. Fisheries exert powerful predation and can be a potent evolutionary force. Fisheries-induced selection can lead to phenotypic changes that influence the collapse and recovery of the fishery. However, heritability of the phenotypic traits involved and selection intensities are low suggesting that fisheries-induced evolution occurs at moderate rates at decadal time scales. The Pantophysin I (Pan I) locus in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), representing an ancient balanced polymorphism predating the split of cod and its sister species, is under an unusual mix of balancing and directional selection including current selective sweeps. Here we show that Pan I alleles are highly correlated with depth with a gradient of 0.44% allele frequency change per meter. AA fish are shallow-water and BB deep-water adapted in accordance with behavioral studies using data storage tags showing habitat selection by Pan I genotype. AB fish are somewhat intermediate although closer to AA. Furthermore, using a sampling design covering space and time we detect intense habitat-specific fisheries-induced selection against the shallow-water adapted fish with an average 8% allele frequency change per year within year class. Genotypic fitness estimates (0.08, 0.27, 1.00 of AA, AB, and BB respectively) predict rapid disappearance of shallow-water adapted fish. Ecological and evolutionary time scales, therefore, are congruent. We hypothesize a potential collapse of the fishery. We find that probabilistic maturation reaction norms for Atlantic cod at Iceland show declining length and age at maturing comparable to changes that preceded the collapse of northern cod at Newfoundland, further supporting the hypothesis. We speculate that immediate establishment of large no-take reserves may help avert collapse.  相似文献

Combining Stone Age and modern data provides unique insights for management, extending beyond contemporary problems and shifting baselines. Using fish chronometric parts, we compared demographic characteristics of exploited cod populations from the Neolithic Period (4500 BP) to the modern highly exploited fishery in the central Baltic Sea. We found that Neolithic cod were larger (mean 56.4 cm, 95% confidence interval (CI)+/-0.9) than modern fish (weighted mean length in catch =49.5+/-0.2 cm in 1995, 48.2+/-0.2 cm in 2003), and older (mean ages=4.7+/-0.11, 3.1+/-0.02 and 3.6+/-0.02 years for Neolithic, 1995, and 2003 fisheries, respectively). Fishery-independent surveys in 1995 and 2003 show that mean sizes in the stock are 16-17 cm smaller than reflected in the fishery, and mean ages approximately 1-1.5 years younger. Modelled von Bertalanffy growth and back-calculated lengths indicated that Neolithic cod grew to smaller asymptotic lengths, but were larger at younger ages, implying rapid early growth. Very small Neolithic cod were absent and large individuals were rare as in modern times. This could be owing to selective harvests, the absence of small and large fish in the area or a combination. Comparing modern and prehistoric times, fishery selection is evident, but apparently not as great as in the North Atlantic proper.  相似文献

Three hundred and sixty-nine cod Gadus morhua were individually marked and caged for 19 months. During this period, each cod was inspected several times for Lernaeocera branchialis . Growth in four groups of cod, identified by their infection history, were compared. During the caging, 79% of the cod remained uninfected, 8·5% were infected, but lost the parasite, 8% were infected with one parasite and 4·5% were infected with more than one parasite. The infected fish either harboured the parasite at caging or were infected during the study period. The highest rate of increase, both in body mass and in standard length ( L S), was recorded in the group of male fish infected with one parasite throughout the experimental period. Conversely, those males free from infection showed significantly lower growth. The observed differences in growth could not be explained by changes in variables related to reproductive strategies. The alternative explanation for these results is that resistance to L. branchialis was associated with costs in terms of reduced growth of body mass and L S.  相似文献

Acanthobrama terraesanctae (local name lavnun), an endemic planktivorous cyprinid, dominates total fish numbers (>80%) in Lake Kinneret, and may have a significant top-down impact on the lake ecosystem. The length of young-of-the-year fish calculated from the von Bertalanffy equation agreed with field observations of juvenile growth. An unusual bi-modal length-frequency distribution observed in May 1993 provided additional help in age identification. Males grew more slowly than females and reached a lower maximum length. Total mortality coefficients (exponents) of males and females >12 cm (minimal legal size of fish in the catch) were similar ( c. 1·52). An average cohort reaches maximum biomass during its second year. Maximum production is created at the end of the second year. The production: biomass ratio of the population was 1·16, and 36% of total lavnun standing stock was taken by fishing. From the late 1980s to early 1990s, when standing stock and population structure were stable, the average harvest of 1000 t was consistent with a total lavnun biomass of 2800 t, which constitutes 50–70% of the total fish stock measured acoustically in the lake. Such a biomass could be sustained by the known production of zooplankton. Absence of verified growth data for lavnun contributed to the collapse of the fishery in 1993, because it hampered timely revision of fishery policy in response to the drastic changes in the lavnun stock in 1992.  相似文献

We describe the epizootiology of spirorchiid trematode infections in Hawaiian green turtles (Chelonia mydas) by quantifying tissue egg burdens in turtles submitted for necropsy and by assessing antibody response to crude adult worm and egg antigens among a variety of age groups. Hapalotrema sp. and Laeredius sp. predominated in turtles infected with spirorchiids. Tissue egg burdens decreased with increasing size and increased with deteriorating body condition of turtles. No relationship was found between tissue egg burdens and sex or fibropapillomatosis status. Tissue egg burdens increased in turtles from southeast to northwest in the main Hawaiian Islands (Hawaii to Kauai). Hatchling and captive-reared turtles had significantly lower levels of antibodies against crude worm and egg antigens. Based on tissue egg burdens and antibody status, we hypothesize that immature turtles become infected with spirorchiids shortly after recruiting into coastal foraging pastures from the pelagic environment, that infection levels decrease with age, and that spirorchiids detrimentally affect the body condition of sea turtles independent of tumor burden. The low intensity of infection in turtles with the endemic trematode Carettacola hawaiiensis suggests either that turtles are less susceptible to infection with this parasite or that the parasite is outcompeted by species of Hapalotrema and Laeredius. Given that the 2 latter species are found in the Pacific and other oceans, they are not likely endemic and were probably introduced into Hawaii through an undetermined route.  相似文献

A total of 178 channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), 162 freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens), 60 smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) and 2,488 yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were examined for larval Eustrongylides tubifex (Nitzsch 1819) J?gerskiold 1909 during 1973 and 1974. Older, large fish exhibited higher prevalence, larger mean numbers of larvae in infected fish, larger mean numbers of larvae in all fish examined, and wider range of intensity of infection. Infections were most extensive in yellow perch. The majority of larvae were removed from mesenteric cysts. Under experimental conditions, larvae migrated from cysts through the body wall when environmental temperatures reached or exceeded 40 C. Fourth-stage larvae removed from yellow perch successfully reinfected a variety of poikilothermous experimental hosts. Both young-of-the-year and I+ age/size class yellow perch exhibited increasing monthly larval worm burdens during portions of the sampling period. Older (II+) age/size class yellow perch did not exhibit significantly increasing worm burdens. No significant differences were noted in numbers of male and female larvae or in worm burdens in male and female yellow perch.  相似文献

Material was collected in 1997–1999, 2002, and 2006 at the eastern coast of the northern Kuril Islands and at the southeastern extremity of Kamchatka. The prevalence of infection by the parasitic copepod Haemobaphes diceraus in the cod Gadus macrocephalus during the study period averaged 22.2%. The intensity of H. diceraus infection was up to 6 ind/fish, and it increased with decrease in the average and greatest body length of the cod. With increase in fish body length, the role of the fourth branchial arch as the attachment site of the parasite decreased and the importance of the second branchial arch increased. Pacific cod mainly become infected by H. diceraus at depths of 101–150 m. A sharp increase in the occurrence of chitinized remains of this parasite occurred in fish starting with the 41–45 cm size group. The death rate of infected cod up to 40 cm long was 14.3%.  相似文献

Infections of brown trout Salmo trutta L. by larvae of the nematode Eustrongylides sp. were studied over a period of two years in Fernworthy Reservoir, Devon. The parasite, here as elsewhere in Britain, is acquired only in the lake itself and not in the streams feeding it. Both native and introduced brown trout were infected but not rainbow trout which did not survive sufficiently long in the reservoir. The parasite showed a preference for female fish and for fish over 20 cm in length. Since these latter were approaching the end of their natural life span in the lake, there was insufficient time for the parasites to accumulate in older fish. No seasonal changes in infection levels or size composition of the parasite population were recorded. The larvae occurred in capsules, the majority of which were attached to the stomach wall. No local pathological effects associated with the capsules were observed and infested fish were of similar length, weight and condition to uninfected ones. The absence of harmful effects upon the trout in Fernworthy Reservoir is compared and contrasted with the effects of the parasite in other localities. It is concluded that although Eustrongylides can occasionally cause damage to some species of fish, there is no conclusive evidence that it does so to trout. but its unsightly appearance and harmful effects on birds renders it an undesirable parasite in any fishery.  相似文献

The parasitic genera Ancylostoma, Uncinaria, Bunostomum and Toxocara can cause larva migrans. 本文采用胸鳍第二支鳍骨为研究东江尖头塘鳢的年龄鉴定材料。胸鳍第二支鳍骨(远侧部)长的骨(R)与体长(L)的关系L=10.6565 54.3848R。用von Bertalanffy生长方程可表达体长、体重与年龄的关系:L=298.6(1-e~(-0.2313(t 0.3028))];W_t=577.4(1-e~(-0.2313(t 0.3028))]~3。根据r-选择和K-选择的典型特征以及渐近体长(L_∞)、渐近体重(W_∞)、生长系数(K)、瞬时自然死亡率(M)、初次生殖年龄(T_m)、最大年龄(T_(max))和性腺指数(GI)等7个生态学参数值,可以判断尖头塘鳢偏向r-选择。应用平衡产量模式计算改变瞬时捕捞死亡率(F)和渔业补充年龄(t_c)时的产量变化,同样证实尖头塘鳢生活史偏向r-选择。作为渔业管理对策,尖头塘鳢的捕捞年龄可定为2—3龄,以2龄为主,这样既能保护资源,又能获得较好的经济效益。  相似文献

Demersal fish were sampled over 3 years to describe sealworm Pseudoterranova decipiens infection levels in relation to the size of a local colony of common seals Phoca vitulina in Hvaler, Oslofjord, Norway. More than 2000 fish were examined for worms, and five fish species were found to be infected, cod Gadus morhua , four-bearded rockling Enchelyopus cimbrius , plaice Pleuronectes platessa , long rough dab Hippoglossoides platessoides and dab Limanda limanda. A detailed analysis of worm accumulation in cod, the only infected species present in large enough numbers, shows a net decrease in worm transmission following the phocine distemper virus epizootic which killed two-thirds of the seals in Hvaler in 1988.  相似文献
