Cricodon metabolus is a trirachodontid cynodont from the Anisian (Middle Triassic) of eastern and southern Africa. It has labiolingually expanded (gomphodont) postcanines but also a sectorial tooth in the last postcanine locus. In this paper, we examine the crown microstructure of isolated sectorial and gomphodont postcanines belonging to the holotype specimen of this taxon using scanning electron microscopy. The enamel of both teeth is prismless and composed of discontinuous columnar divergence units, supporting the consistent presence of synapsid columnar enamel in cynognathians. Abundant tubules and numerous irregularly spaced incremental lines are also visible in the enamel and dentine layers in each tooth. This study reveals that the enamel thickness varies along the tooth row in Cricodon as the enamel layer of the gomphodont postcanines is 11.5 times thicker than that of the sectorial crown. It is likely that this difference reflects occlusal stresses and fewer replacements in gomphodont postcanines relative to sectorial teeth. Approximately 100 incremental growth lines of von Ebner are present in the dentine layer, indicating that the deposition of the dentine by odontoblasts occurred for three months before the animal's death.

An investigation with the scanning electron microscope into the microstructure of the surface layer covering the oral teeth of Latimeria chalumnae has shown this tissue to be enamel of the type found in amphibians, reptiles and mammals. It is not comparable with enameloid, cuticular enamel or terminal membrane enamel as described in scanning electron microscope accounts of the teeth of actinopterygians. Equidistant lamellations parallel to the enamel-dentine junction are a distinctive feature, interpreted in this study as phasic appositional growth, a characteristic of the ectodermal type of enamel. These conclusions together with those from histological and microradiographic studies confirm that enamel is present in coelacanths.
The microstructure of enamel in the teeth of Latimeria an extant actinistian compares well with that of fossil crossopterygian teeth described from polarized light studies and indicates that enamel, homologous with the ectodermal type of enamel is found in both actinistians and rhipidistians.

Three fragmentary molars of Kuehneotherium from Wales were progressively abraded by grinding and studied by scanning electron microscopy. A fourth molar was reduced to small blocks, thin sections of which were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Enamel showed a 'preprismatic' pattern, consisting of columns of crystals disposed as pinnae but not separated by an interprismatic substance. No enamel tubules were observed. Incremental lines were present. Inner dentine was permeated by numerous tubules not surrounded by peritubular dentine but a peripheral dentine layer adjacent to the enamel-dentine junction was atubular. Calcified deposits were occasionally observed in the lumen of dentine tubules, some of which were interpreted here as dentinal sclerosis consecutive to masticatory wear.

In Hemiphractus fang–like teeth are ankylosed to the premaxilla, maxilla and prevomer, and bony odontoids are found on the dentary, angular and palatine bones. The odontoids are small, but a larger pair at the front of the lower jaw project upwards and backwards into the mouth and fit into a diastema between the anterior premaxillary teeth when the mouth is closed.
The teeth are unipartite and monocuspid, and each consists of a strongly recurved and elongated cone of orthodentine, capped at the tip by a thin layer of enamel. The inner circumpulpal layer of the dentine is tubular, but no tubules are present in the outer pallial layer. During tooth development, dentine is formed before the enamel matrix is produced, and the tooth germs lie horizontally beneath the ventral surface of each dentigerous bone. On eruption, the tooth germs migrate horizontally and become ankylosed to the outer edge of the jaw bone by a layer of cellular cementum.
During tooth replacement, the vast majority of the dentine of each tooth, and the cementum at the tooth base, are resorbed by osteoclasts. It is not clear whether the tips of the teeth are shed or not.

Bacterial colonization of dentine is of high relevance in cariology, endodontology and periodontology. The aim of the present in situ study was to establish recent methods for visualization and quantification of initial bacterial adherence to dentine in comparison to enamel. For this purpose, bovine enamel and dentine slabs were fixed on buccal sites of individual upper jaw splints worn by 6 subjects for 30 min, 120 min and 360 min, respectively. Adherent bacteria on the slabs were visualized and quantified with DAPI-staining (4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of streptococci and eubacteria using the CLSM (confocal laser scanning microscopy) as well as an epifluorescence microscope. In addition, the number of colony forming units was quantified after desorption. Representative samples were processed for SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy). All methods clearly indicated that a significantly higher number of bacteria adhered to dentine than to enamel. Furthermore, the amount of bacteria on the dentine increased with increasing oral exposure time, but remained rather constant on the enamel. The CLSM allowed visualization of bacteria in the dentinal tubules. Bacteria were found preferentially at the openings of the dentine tubules, but were distributed randomly on the enamel. In conclusion, the adopted methods are suitable for visualization and quantification of bacterial adhesion to dentine. Even the initial bacterial colonization of dentine is much more pronounced than bacterial adherence to the enamel.

Scanning electron microscopy revealed several similarities as well as significant differences in the enamel structure between cat and dog teeth. Three enamel layers were present in both species; a surface rodless (aprismatic) layer, an outer layer of parallel rods (only at some sites), and an inner layer with prominent Hunter-Schreger bands. In the inner layer of both carnivores, the diameter of individual rods varied significantly and frequently their course changed abruptly with respect to neighboring rods. In dog teeth the cross-sectional shape of inner enamel rods was pleomorphic, but hexagonal in outer enamel. In contrast, cat enamel rods were rounded in both inner and outer enamel layers. Hunter-Schreger bands of cats circumscribed the teeth in relatively straight segments, but these bands showed pronounced waviness in dog teeth. In cats and dogs the surface rodless layer was structurally continuous with subjacent interrod enamel and covered all tooth surfaces with the exception of the cervical areas. The data show that the structure of inner and outer enamel layers differ between these two carnivore species and that the enamel structure of the cat was most similar to that described in humans. One principal difference between carnivore and human teeth is that the growth lines of carnivores do not terminate at perikymata on the tooth surface.

Odontogenesis of early larval non-pedicellate teeth, late larval teeth with a more or less distinct dividing zone and fully transformed pedicellate teeth in Ambystoma mexicanum (Urodela) was studied to obtain insights into the development of differently structured teeth in lower vertebrates. Using transmission electron microscopy we investigated five developmental stages: (1) papilla; (2) bell stage (secretion of the matrix begins); (3) primordium (mineralization and activity of ameloblasts starts); (4) replacement tooth (young, old); and (5) established, functional tooth. Development of the differently structured teeth is largely identical in the first three stages. Mineralization takes place in apico-basal direction up to the (prospective) pedicel (early and some late larvae) or up to the zone that divides the late larval and transformed tooth in pedicel and dentine shaft (pedicellate condition). Mineralization starts directly at the collagen and by means of matrix vesicles. First odontoblasts develop small processes that extend to the basal lamina of the inner epithelial layer of the enamel organ. The processes are small and lack organelles in early larval teeth, but become larger, arborescent, and contain some organelles in late larval and transformed teeth. The processes are surrounded by unmineralized matrix (predentine). Odontoblasts at the basis of the teeth, at the pedicel, and in the zone of division do not develop significant cytoplasmic processes that extend into the matrix. Cells of the inner enamel epithelium differentiate to ameloblasts that secrete the enamel. In the early larval tooth they show an extensive basal labyrinth that becomes regressive when the enamel layer is completed. In late larval and transformed teeth, however, a large cavity arises between the basal ruffled border of ameloblasts and their basal lamina. This cavity appears to mediate amelogenesis. A small apical zone in early, but not in late larval teeth directly below the thin enamel layer consists of enameloid and is free of dentine channels.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate under scanning electron microscopy the ability of different chemically reactive solutions to form a protective layer on dentine. The materials selected were an oxalate solution, a collagen-oxalate solution, a collagen-oxalate solution plus glutaraldehyde and a saline control solution. Small dentine fragments, obtained from extracted human teeth, were treated with the various chemical solution for 60 seconds. All samples were then examined in a Jeol scanning electron microscope. The preliminary observations suggest that dentine may be covered by a mixture of oxalate crystals and collagen producing a homogeneous layer of reactive agents.

The objectives of the paper included a quantitative evaluation qualitative and topographic distribution of four microelements, namely lead, zinc, iron and copper, within enamel prisms, interprismatic region, tubular dentine, and intertubular dentine. The studies were carried out with the use of an X-ray microanalyser and an electron scanning microscope. The values of lead, zinc, iron and copper were higher in the enamel. Topographic curves for all the elements were similar within the enamel and dentin, characterized by unevenly distributed flat zero segments along with several peaks of diversified amplitude, being somewhat denser in the enamel. Qualitative distribution of the elements was also similar, and slightly denser within the enamel, the grains being unevenly scattered.
