The occurrence of variation in body size and reproductive traits of Vipera aspis was assessed by analysing 74 reproductive females of different populations, collected throughout a large part of the distribution range of the taxon, from central‐western France to central Italy. Six populations were analysed, two of plain habitats, in France and Italy, characterized by a Continental climate, whereas the other four derived from two coastal and two inland, hilly Italian habitats, respectively, showing a Mediterranean climate. Females of the French area showed the smallest mean body size, whereas the pre‐ and post‐partum body masses of females from the coolest, central Italic area were significantly higher. Litter size varied among habitats and was significantly correlated with maternal body size. If the snout–vent length feature varied largely among offspring of different habitats (with the longest size occurring in representatives of the coastal, central Italian area), the average of both body mass and total mass of offsprings did not exhibit any clear pattern among populations colonizing different habitats. Nevertheless, relative litter mass was higher in the French continental populations, and lower in the coolest, Mediterranean, Italian ones. It is worth emphasizing the positive correlation between the snout–vent length feature of females and the total litter mass to environmental factors, such as hottest month temperature and total rainfall. The available literature records that female body size affects offspring size and fecundity. If the present study bolsters this correlation, it also rules out any other effect of female body size on the offspring characteristics analysed. Finally, evidence is provided for the role of climatic factors on life‐history traits (e.g. pre‐partum body mass) of asp vipers, although confounding effects pursued, for example, by food availability may occur. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 96 , 383–391.

Telomeres comprise tandem repeated DNA sequences that protect the ends of chromosomes from deterioration or fusion with neighboring chromosomes, and their lengths might vary with sex and age. Here, age‐ and sex‐related telomere lengths in male and female captive Siamese cobras (Naja kaouthia) were investigated using quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction based on cross‐sectional data. A negative correlation was shown between telomere length and body size in males but not in females. Age‐related sex differences were also recorded. Juvenile female snakes have shorter telomeres relative to males at up to 5 years of age, while body size also rapidly increases during this period. This suggests that an accelerated increase in telomere length of female cobra results from sex hormone stimulation to telomerase activity, reflecting sexually dimorphic phenotypic traits. This might also result from amplification of telomeric repeats on sex chromosomes. By contrast, female Siamese cobras older than 5 years had longer telomeres than males. Diverse sex hormone levels and oxidative stress parameters between sexes may affect telomere length.

Natural and sexual selection can have either opposing or synergistic effects on the evolution of traits. In the green swordtail Xiphophorus helleri , sexual selection arising from female choice is known to favour larger males and males with longer swords. We examined variation in male and female size and fin morphology among 15 populations that varied in their predation environments. Males and females from populations in which piscivorous fishes were present had longer and deeper bodies than did males and females from populations in which piscivorous fishes were absent. Controlling for a positive effect of body size on sword length, males from populations in which piscivores were present had relatively shorter swords than did males from populations in which piscivores were absent. The associations between morphology and predation environment may be due to direct effects of predation, indirect effects of predation, other sources of selection that covary with predator presence, or other environmental effects on trait expression. These results suggest that while sexual selection favours longer swords, natural selection may have an opposing effect on sword length in populations with predators. Natural selection on body size, however, may act synergistically with sexual selection in populations with predators; both may favour the evolution of larger body size. The body size results for X. helleri contrast with related taxa that have become model systems for the study of life history evolution.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 87–100.

Variation in height and body proportions is relatively well-understood at the inter-population level, but less is known about intra-population variation. This study explores intra-population variation in body proportions among 172 (88 female; 84 male) adult rural Amazonians. We test the hypotheses that: (1) stunting is associated with changes in proportions and fatness; (2) the sexes express different proportions in response to similar environmental stress; and (3) female growth is negatively affected by the costs of reproduction. We examined height, sitting height, and total leg length in subsamples based on sex and nutritional status (stunted/nonstunted) in relation to biocultural factors including access to food and healthcare and female reproductive history parameters. Differences in proportions were examined using the Quick-Test (Tsutakawa and Hewett: Biometrics 33 (1977) 215-219); correlation analyses were used to detect associations between anthropometric data and body fatness, and female reproductive history parameters. We found significantly higher rates of stunting among females (X(2) = 5.31; P = 0.02; RR = 1.4). Stunted individuals exhibited relatively shorter legs than nonstunted individuals (P = 0.02), although this was not found in within-sex analyses. A significant negative correlation was found between leg length index and fatness (P < 0.01). Lastly, females exhibited relatively shorter legs than males (P = 0.0003) and, among females, height and leg length were significantly positively correlated with age-at-first-birth (P < 0.02) suggesting that adolescent pregnancy may negatively affect growth in this population. Our findings provide insights for the study of intra-population variation in body proportions and highlight the importance of biocultural data in interpreting the pattern of variation observed in living and past populations.

Male poeciliid fishes inseminate females using an intromittent organ called the gonopodium. Here we report on natural variation in gonopodium size both within and between 12 populations of the freshwater fish Brachyrhaphis episcopi (Poeciliidae) in Panama. We show that males from sites with more predatory fish species have, on average, a relatively longer gonopodium than males inhabiting sites with fewer predatory fish. Gonopodium length was not correlated with the site-specific adult sex ratio and the average sex ratio was more strongly female biased at sites with more predatory fish. The gonopodium exhibited lower phenotypic variance than the average for sexually selected traits and it generally showed negative allometry. Our results are similar to those reported for the guppy Poecilia reticulata . Two alternative hypotheses for these findings are discussed. First, that population differences are sexually selected. Second, that they are an incidental consequence of environmental differences between sites. Specifically, that higher water flow rates select for enlarged fin size and stockier bodies in downstream sites where predatory fish are more common.

1. Reproductive traits were studied in seven wild populations of resident brown trout in Spain. We examined whether growth, and certain environmental conditions such as water temperature or food abundance, could explain interpopulation variation in the reproductive characters.
2. The results indicated that nearby populations subjected to a wide variation in environmental conditions exhibited a similar reproductive performance.
3. Age distributions and sex ratios were not significantly different among populations. Age ranged from 0+ to 4+ years but the populations were dominated by the 0+ to 2+ groups. In all rivers females matured at age 2+ as opposed to age 1+ and 2+ for males. Mean length at the end of the growth period differed significantly among populations. However, annual growth rate was similar among rivers and was not significantly correlated with either biomass of the benthos or water temperature during the growth season.
4. Reproductive effort, body condition, fecundity and egg size did not correlate significantly with either the abundance of benthic invertebrates or water temperature. Once the effect of body length on both egg size and number was removed, a significant negative correlation was found between these two traits among populations.

Obstetric selection acts on the female pelvic canal to accommodate the human neonate and contributes to pelvic sexual dimorphism. There is a complex relationship between selection for obstetric sufficiency and for overall body size in humans. The relationship between selective pressures may differ among populations of different body sizes and proportions, as pelvic canal dimensions vary among populations. Size and shape of the pelvic canal in relation to body size and shape were examined using nine skeletal samples (total female n = 57; male n = 84) from diverse geographical regions. Pelvic, vertebral, and lower limb bone measurements were collected. Principal component analyses demonstrate pelvic canal size and shape differences among the samples. Male multivariate variance in pelvic shape is greater than female variance for North and South Africans. High‐latitude samples have larger and broader bodies, and pelvic canals of larger size and, among females, relatively broader medio‐lateral dimensions relative to low‐latitude samples, which tend to display relatively expanded inlet antero‐posterior (A‐P) and posterior canal dimensions. Differences in canal shape exist among samples that are not associated with latitude or body size, suggesting independence of some canal shape characteristics from body size and shape. The South Africans are distinctive with very narrow bodies and small pelvic inlets relative to an elongated lower canal in A‐P and posterior lengths. Variation in pelvic canal geometry among populations is consistent with a high degree of evolvability in the human pelvis. We performed a common garden experiment to assess the existence of genetic differences on growth and body size between two populations of Poecilia vivipara inhabiting extremes of an environmental gradient caused by water salinity in lagoons of Northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil: the Campelo lagoon (freshwater) and Açu lagoon (brackish/saltwater). The two populations show extreme differences in average phenotypes for body size, shape and life history (freshwater populations with smaller body size, lower fecundity and larger reproductive allotment). Pregnant females were brought to the lab and the offspring from both groups were kept in a common recirculating system with freshwater. Standard length and survival were measured weekly over a period of 200 days and growth models were fitted and selected with information criteria. The offspring originally from the brackish water lagoon presented larger asymptotic length, higher maximum growth rate but lower survival than the offspring originally from the freshwater lagoon. Potential confounding variables such as density differences due to mortality and maternal effects (offspring size) were included as covariates in comparisons of growth rates between groups. The results are consistent with phenotypic differences among populations having some genetic basis, and with the existence of a trade-off between growth and maintenance due to the high growth/low survival observed in the group that changed from salt to freshwater. Comparisons of captive and natural populations suggest that the influence of environmental factors, such as salinity, food availability, fish density and predation should also be considered relevant to explain phenotypic variation in this system.

Recruitment and growth of the sardineSardinops melanostictus fluctuated markedly in the Sea of Japan and adjacent waters between 1978 and 1993. Stock size was calculated using Virtual Population Analysis and average body length in each age class was determined by the number of annual rings on the scales. There is an inverse correlation between average water temperature at a depth of 50 m in the coastal area of the mainland of Japan in winter (January to March) and recruitmentR defined as the number of individuals at 1 year old. There is also an inverse correlation between spawning stock sizeE and reproductive success in (R/E). A multiple regression model using spawning stock size and water temperature in winter as independent variables can explain 73% of variance in reproductive success. It suggests that both density-dependent and density-independent factors perform important roles determining reproductive success. There is an inverse correlation between body length and stock size and this suggests that there is a density-dependent effect on the growth of the sardine.

Geographic variation and interspecific differentiation in body size (body length) were analyzed for 15 species of the carabid subgenus Ohomopterus (genus Carabus; Coleoptera, Carabidae) in Japan. Local species assemblages of this subgenus consist of up to 5 species of different size classes. These beetles exhibited sexual dimorphism in body size where females are larger than males, except Carabus uenoi, in which the male and female sizes were equivalent, possibly because of the exaggerated male genitalia. In 9 of 15 species, there was a positive correlation between mean body size and annual mean temperature of habitat, representing the converse of Bergmann's rule. However, in some cases this correlation does not hold over the range of a species because of regional differences. When allopatric and sympatric populations were compared, allopatric populations of Carabus albrechti and C. japonicus had larger bodies than sympatric populations. These intraspecific differences may have resulted from character displacement. In each local assemblage with 2 or more species, there was little interspecific overlap of body size, although the body size ratio between two species with adjacent body sizes seldom showed strict constancy. The mean size ratio between 2 adjacent species in an assemblage was reduced with the number of species, whereas the size ratio of the largest to smallest species in an assemblage increased with the number of species (i.e., the expansion of body size range). These results indicate that the body size of Ohomopterus species may have evolved in response to both climatic conditions and interspecific interactions. Because each species or species group represents the same size class over the distribution range and similar-sized species are parapatric or allopatric, the interspecific segregation in body size in local assemblages may have resulted mainly from a size assortment process during colonization. The frequency of litter overlap, the simultaneous presence of two litters at different stages of development within a single female, varies among populations of Gambusia hubbsi in different habitats on Andros, Bahamas. In freshwater bluehole and shallow water populations, less than 2% of the females carried two litters, independent of the difference in developmental stage between the litters. In well field populations, 2% of the females carried two litters composed of immature and mature oocytes, whereas 10% carried developing oocytes and late stage embryos, and 16% carried mature oocytes (or older) and late stage embryos. Among females from populations that we introduced into unoccupied well fields 2% carried two litters composed of immature and mature oocytes, about 14% carried developing oocytes and late stage embryos, and less than 6% carried mature oocytes (or older) and late stage embryos. When two litters composed developing oocytes and late stage embryos were present, the two litters were of equal size, and the total number of offspring was 1.5 times larger than expected on the basis of female body length. When two litters composed mature oocytes (or older stages) and late stage embryos were present, the two litters were also of equal size, and the total number of offspring was as expected on the basis of female body length. Litter overlap was independent of female size. A comparison of the consequences of litter overlap for strictly lecithotrophic and strictly matrotrophic modes of reproduction with the patterns of litter overlap observed in G. hubbsi, suggests that litter overlap in G. hubbsi reduces the cost of reproduction, but does not increase the rate of offspring production.

The degree and direction of sexual dimorphism across different species is commonly attributed to differences in the selection pressures acting on males and females. The extent of these differences is especially apparent in species that practise sexual cannibalism, where the female attempts to capture and eat a courting male. Here, we investigate the relationship between sexual dimorphism in size and leg length, sexual cannibalism and courtship behaviour in three taxonomic groups of orb-weaving spiders, using morphological data from 249 species in 36 genera. Females are larger than males in all three taxonomic groups, and males have relatively longer legs than females in both the Araneinae and Tetragnathidae. Across genera within each taxonomic group, male body size is positively correlated with both female body size and male leg length, and female body size is positively correlated with female leg length. Sexual size dimorphism is negatively correlated with relative male leg length within the Araneinae, but not within either the Tetragnathidae or the Gasteracanthinae. There was no negative correlation between sexual size dimorphism and relative female leg length in any taxonomic group. We argue that the relationship between sexual size dimorphism and relative male leg length within the Araneinae may be the result of selection imposed by sexual cannibalism by females.

Females reproductive, size, and age characteristics were studied in isolated local populations of Rana arvalis in the southern and northern parts of its range. The yearlings of the southern populations used to get larger by their first overwintering due to earlier beginning of the breeding season, as compared with the yearlings of the northern population. As a result, "southern" females become sexually mature at the age of two years while the "northern" ones become mature at the age of three years. This causes geographic differences in age composition among two populations, the "southern" reproductive females being younger on average than the "northern" ones. The earlier female maturation in the first case is not compensated by respective rise of the growth rate; to the contrary, the "southern" females grow more slowly during the first two years of their life and appear to be smaller than the "norhern" ones. These reproduction and growth patterns arise supposedly due to paedomorphosis, which causes specific reproductive characteristics, namely decrease in the egg size, increase in the reproductive effort and more strong correlation between female fertility and body size. Local and geographic differences are expressed not in the extent but in the structure of reproductive pattern, as no negative correlation was revealed between female reproductive age and body size in the southern populations. Southern habitats cannot be considered as "unfavourable with respect to body size", so the geographic differences under consideration cannot be explained by optimization of the reproductive strategies at population level. Paedomorphosis appears as a result of the female maturation rate possessing a wider norm of reaction than the growth rate. At the same time, fixation of the specific growth rate narrows norm of reaction of some other characters important for the phenotype reproductive fitness thus predetermining their subsequent evolution.

Morphological analysis of characteristics of shrimps from parthenogenetic and bisexual Artemia populations from a vast territory from the Urals to the Sayan Mountains was made. A normal distribution of the majority of parameters and a different degree of their interrelation and dependence on some environmental factors (salinity, ion composition, and ratio) were recorded. The analysis included seasonal, interannual, and sexual variability of Artemia. The greatest influence of salinity and separately of main ions (except for carbonates, hydrocarbonates, and calcium) on the abdomen and furca structure is shown. No correlation was found between water salinity and body length. The cluster analysis of a complex of morphological parameters showed grouping of populations by salinity of lakes instead of their geographical position and sexual structure of populations.

A sample of 1931 Israeli infants was measured for body weight (WT), length (HT) and head circumference (HC) for approximately 2 years. The Count model with 3 parameters was chosen as the best fitting and most parsimonious function to approximate growth of all 3 studied traits. In the model parameter a relates to birth indices, b--to velocity of growth, and c--to rapid early childhood growth, or acceleration. Assuming a difference in growth patterns in the periods of different length, the whole sample was divided into 3 groups: 1) infants with last measurement around the age of 12 months; 2) infants with last measurement around the age of 18 months, and 3) infants with last measurement around the age of 24 months. The individuals measured up to 12 months were presented in all three groups. 27 curve fitting parameters, corresponding to 3 different follow-up intervals for WT, HT and HC were computed for each individual. A high correlation was detected between the a parameters regardless of time interval for 3 measured traits. A negative correlation was found between b and c parameters within the same time interval. A consistent positive correlation was indicated between a and b parameters, especially for body length and head circumference. A principal component analysis extracted five independent factors explaining 88.1% of the total variance. Three first factors retained parameters b and c, describing growth rate and pattern of each trait separately, namely, F1 was responsible for head circumference, F2 was a body length factor, F3 was a body weight factor. F4 extracted all birth indices, observed (HC0, HT0 and WT0) and expected (parameters a). The composition of principal factors allowed us to assume that there might be a strong involvement of a pleiotropic genetic source in determination of birth size traits and an independent genetic source controlling the pattern of growth for each trait separately.

Declining body size is believed to be a universal response to climate warming and has been documented in numerous studies of marine and anadromous fishes. The Salmonidae are a family of coldwater fishes considered to be among the most sensitive species to climate warming; however, whether the shrinking body size response holds true for freshwater salmonids has yet to be examined at a broad spatial scale. We compiled observations of individual fish lengths from long-term surveys across the Northern Hemisphere for 12 species of freshwater salmonids and used linear mixed models to test for spatial and temporal trends in body size (fish length) spanning recent decades. Contrary to expectations, we found a significant increase in length overall but with high variability in trends among populations and species. More than two-thirds of the populations we examined increased in length over time. Secondary regressions revealed larger-bodied populations are experiencing greater increases in length than smaller-bodied populations. Mean water temperature was weakly predictive of changes in body length but overall minimal influences of environmental variables suggest that it is difficult to predict an organism's response to changing temperatures by solely looking at climatic factors. Our results suggest that declining body size is not universal, and the response of fishes to climate change may be largely influenced by local factors. It is important to know that we cannot assume the effects of climate change are predictable and negative at a large spatial scale.

Intestinal length of three California pinniped species
Roger C.  Helm 《Journal of Zoology》1983,199(3):297-304
Forty-eight intestinal tracts, extracted from both sexes of California sea lions, Harbour seals and Northern elephant seals, were measured. The majority of intestinal tracts were removed from stranded animals that died from various causes. The sea lions and elephant seals, approximately equal in size, were larger than the Harbour seals. All species possess a small intestine which is significantly longer than even the entire gastrointestinal tract of herbivores of comparable size. Elephant seal small intestines, averaging approximately 25 times the seal's body length, were considerably longer than the small intestines of either sea lions (averaged more than 18 times the body length) or Harbour seals (averaged nearly 16 times the body length). However, the large intestines of elephant seals were shorter than either of the other two species. Among the sea lions and Harbour seals the large intestines were approximately equal in length. Sea lions and Harbour seals also showed a close correlation between standard length and total intestinal length. Among elephant seals these two parameters showed greater variability. The functional significance of the extremely long small intestine remains unclear. Certainly, the large body mass and high energy requirements of these animals has contributed to the development of a long intestinal tract. It also appears likely that diet and the high motility rate of digesta influenced the intestinal development. Comparatively, the significantly shorter large intestine of elephant seals probably relates to this species' remarkable capabilities in water conservation and metabolic water retention.

The biometric and primary moult data housed at the South African Bird Ringing Unit (SAFRING) were analysed for the Sociable Weaver Philetairus socius. The average body mass and wing length was 27.9g (SD = 2.2) and 74.1mm (SD = 2.5), respectively. Variation in these parameters is not clearly correlated with region, season or climate, other than a negative correlation of body mass with average annual water deficiency. Body mass of Sociable Weavers near Kimberley showed a longterm decrease of 2.9g, probably due to stabilising selection on mass. Primary moult duration varied from 152 days to 169 days and started between 26 January and 31 December in two populations (socius and South African eremnus respectively). Individual primaries moulted mainly one at a time, each taking 20–28 days to grow fully. Prolonged moult duration in this species is probably an adaptation to reduce energy expenditure, and to grow more durable feathers due to abrasion in entering the nest. The lack of clear patterns of geographical variation in biometrics indicates that the contiguous populations of Sociable Weaver should belong to the nominate species.
