Abstract

The food preferences and rates of growth of the omnivorous pasture wireworm, Conoderus exsul (Sharp) were studied. Larvae of soil-living insects were preferred to germinating maize seed, and wireworm growth rate was greater on insect compared with plant food. In glasshouse pot trials, wireworms increased their attack rate as the density of grass grub (Costelytra zealandica (White)) or white-fringed weevil (Graphthognathus leucoloma Boheman) larvae was increased. In field experiments that compared grass grub numbers in cages accessible to wireworms or protected from predators, predation varied with season from a low of 15% in late summer up to 82% in late autumn. White-fringed weevil larval mortality was increased by addition of wireworms in two field experiments, but not affected in a third trial where initial white-fringed weevil density was low. Grass grub mortality was increased by the presence of wireworms in field plots. Adult C. exsul were observed feeding on sweetcorn pollen.  相似文献

The feeding of soil dwelling insects on storage roots is one of the most serious management issues faced by sweetpotato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. (Convolvulaceae), growers in the southern United States. Field studies were conducted to evaluate the relative susceptibility of two commonly grown sweetpotato varieties to sweetpotato flea beetle, Chaetocnema confinis Crotch (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), and wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae, various species). The incidence and severity of sweetpotato flea beetle damage was significantly lower in the variety Covington than Beauregard in two small plot replicated studies. Surveys conducted in commercial sweetpotato fields also showed significantly less sweetpotato flea beetle damage in fields planted to Covington compared with those planted to Beauregard. There was no clear evidence of varietal effect on the incidence of wireworm damage in the study. Results indicate that the severity of wireworm damage as measured by the size of feeding scars may be less in Covington than Beauregard.  相似文献

Ten insecticides representing seven chemical groups were applied at various concentrations topically by using a Potter Spray Tower to evaluate their relative toxicities on the European wireworm Agriotes obscurus L. (Coleoptera: Elateridae). Wireworms were stored at 15 degrees C after exposure to organophosphate (OP) (chlorpyrifos, diazinon), pyrethroid (tefluthrin), thianicotinoid (thiamethoxam, clothianidin), chloronicotinoid (imidacloprid, acetamiprid), phenyl pyrazole (fipronil), organochlorine (lindane), and spinosyn (spinosad) insecticides, and their postapplication health was evaluated weekly for up to 301 d. LC50, LC90, LT50, and LT90 values were calculated for each chemical except acetamiprid, and compared with those of lindane, clothianidin, and chlorpyrifos. Wireworms exposed to OPs died or recovered more quickly (LT50 < 20 d, LT90 < 50 d), than those exposed to all other insecticides tested except tefluthrin (LT50 = 25.5 d, LT90 = 66.5 d). Wireworms exposed to sublethal concentrations of all neonicotinoids quickly became moribund after application but made a full recovery. Wireworms exposed to fipronil at concentrations near the LC90 value showed no intoxication symptoms for up to 35 d, and they did not recover after symptoms developed. For each chemical, increasing the concentration increased the time required for wireworms to recover but decreased the time required to kill wireworms. Fipronil was highly toxic to wireworms (LC50 = 0.0001%), but acetamiprid (LC50 = 1.82%), imidacloprid (LC50 = 0.83%), tefluthrin (LC50 = 0.23%), diazinon (LC50 = 0.54%), and spinosad (LC50 = 0.51%) were not. The toxicity of both clothianidin (LC50 = 0.07%) and thiamethoxam (LC50 = 0.17%) were similar to those oflindane (LC50 = 0.06%) and chlorpyrifos (LC50 = 0.10%).  相似文献

A soil-less bioassay arena to test repellency of wireworms (A. obscurus) to insecticides and carrier solvents is described. The bioassay and variables measured distinguish between shorter-range (contact and/or volatile) and longer-range (volatile) repellency. Wireworm positions are recorded every 3 s for 20 min, and average speed, rate of slowing, and longer- and shorter-range repellent behaviors calculated. Shorter-range repellency is determined with a Wireworm Repellency Score (WRS, range 0-100), calculated before contact and after contact with test chemicals. Of two carrier solvents tested, wireworms were strongly repelled by acetone (WRS = 57) but not by water (WRS = 1) when introduced to the bioassay arenas immediately after chemical inoculation. When bioassay arenas were assembled/sealed 2 min after inoculation, acetone elicited no repellency (WRS = 2). When dissolved in acetone in bioassays assembled with a 2-min delay, imidacloprid, chlorpyrifos, lindane, and tefluthrin elicited slight to moderate repellency at the highest concentrations tested (WRS = 30, 48, 42, and 49, respectively). Both longer- and shorter-range repellency increased over the duration of the observation period for lindane and tefluthrin, and shorter-range repellency also increased over the duration of the observation period for chlorpyrifos. Removal of volatiles in the bioassay arena by vacuum considerably affected wireworm movement in the arena, with the repellency elicited by acetone and lindane being significantly reduced. Clothianidin elicited no longer- or shorter-range repellency.  相似文献

Aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) seasonal flight activity and abundance in wheat, Triticum aestivum L., and the significance of aphid species as vectors of barley yellow dwarf virus were studied over a nine-year period in the South Carolina coastal plain. Four aphid species colonized wheat in a consistent seasonal pattern. Greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), and rice root aphid, Rhopalosiphum rufiabdominalis (Sasaki), colonized seedlingwheat immediately after crop emergence, with apterous colonies usually peaking in December or January and then declining for the remainder of the season. These two aphid species are unlikely to cause economic loss on wheat in South Carolina, thus crop managers should not have to sample for the subterranean R. rufiabdominalis colonies. Bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), was the second most abundant species and the most economically important. Rhopalosiphum padi colonies usually remained below 10/row-meter until peaking in February or March. Barley yellow dwarf incidence and wheat yield loss were significantly correlated with R. padi peak abundance and aphid-day accumulation on the crop. Based on transmission assays, R. padi was primarily responsible for vectoring the predominant virus serotype (PAV) we found in wheat. Pest management efforts should focus on sampling for and suppressing this aphid species. December planting reduced aphid-day accumulation and barley yellow dwarf incidence, but delayed planting is not a practical management option. English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.), was the last species to colonize wheat each season, and the most abundant. Sitobion avenae was responsible for late-season virus transmission and caused direct yield loss by feeding on heads and flag leaves during an outbreak year.  相似文献

The interaction of immature black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, with reptiles and rodents was investigated in various woodland habitats in the coastal plain of North Carolina. Reptiles were sampled from April 1 to September 30, 1991. No ticks were found on 95 specimens representing 16 species of snakes. Ticks were found on 54 (36.7%) of 147 lizards. I. scapularis was the only tick recovered from lizards. Some lizards were collected in drift fence traps each month of the study except August. Capture rates averaged one lizard per 16 trap-days. Larvac and nymphs of I. scapularis were removed from the southeastern five-lined skink (Eumeces inexpectatus), the ground skink (Scincella lateralis), the broad-headed skink (E. laticeps) and the eastem glass lizard (Ophisaurus ventralis), but ticks were not found on three other lizard species. Tick infestation rates and loads for parasitized species are presented. Ticks were almost exlusively attached at the base or in the axils of forelimbs of skinks and in the lateral grooves of eastern glass lizards. Rodents were live-trapped at sites where lizards were sampled and at other sites from 1 July, 1990 to 30 January, 1992. Capture rates averaged one rodent per 47 trap-nights. Ticks were found on 23 (17.8%) of 129 animals inspected. Five species of rodents were examined but only four species were found to be tick-infested. In contrast to lizards, few I. scapularis were collected. Rodents, principally the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) and cotton mouse (P. gossypinus) were most frequently infested with immature American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis, during winter and early spring months. Burdens of D. variabilis on these rodents averaged 0.3 ticks per rodent. Effects of the diversion of ticks from feeding on Peromyscus mice on the transmission of the Lyme disease spirochete are discussed. The use of trade names in this publication does not imply an endorsement by the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service or the College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University of the products named, nor criticism of similar ones not mentioned. Abstract Wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) damage the eyes and young shoots of germinating cane setts in many growing regions. Insecticides can be applied at planting to avoid damage. However, there are no guidelines for deciding on whether treatment is warranted and a sampling method to detect wireworms before planting has not been developed. Baits of rolled oats were tested as a method for detecting wireworms in preplant fallows. In 1995 at Bundaberg, the reduction in crop establishment when treatment was withheld was positively correlated with the catch of wireworms at baits before planting. However, no similar relationship was seen in 1996 or at Mackay in either 1995 or 1996: severe damage was recorded on one farm at Mackay where no wireworms had been found. A sampling plan was developed to estimate wireworm numbers at baits with a fixed level of precision. Wireworms collected at the baits and in samples from established canefields in Queensland and New South Wales included five named and 21 unnamed species from five genera, the most abundant being Agrypnus , Conoderus and Heteroderes . Possible barriers to the adoption of baiting as a decision-support tool are discussed. Development of a reliable monitoring system would require considerably more research, which could not be justified at present.  相似文献

The life histories, densities and distribution patterns of the most abundant macroinvertebrates, exclusive of chironomids and oligochaetes, are reported for a low-gradient, second-order, blackwater stream on the Coastal Plain of South Carolina, USA. Univoltine life histories were found for all species of Coleoptera (Ancyronyx variegata, Macronychus glabratus, Dubiraphia quadrinotata and Hydroporus clypealis) and most species of Ephemeroptera (Eurylophella temporalis, Paraleptophlebia volitans and Hexagenia munda), although the mayfly Stenonema modestum was at least bivoltine. Both univoltinism (Macrostemum carolina and Pycnopsyche luculenta), partial bivoltinism (Nyctiophylax affinis) and complete bivoltinism (Hydropsyche decalda, Cheumatopsyche sp., Phylocentropus placidus and probably Chimarra florida) were found among the Trichoptera. Odonate species were both univoltine (Calopteryx dimidiata, Enallagma divagans and Epitheca cynosura) and semivoltine (Boyeria vinosa, Gomphus lividus and Macromia georgina). The alderfly Sialis aequalis and the isopod Asellus laticaudatus were univoltine, while the blackfly Simulium taxodium produced at least 6 generations per year. Groups of functionally-related species within the orders Odonata, Trichoptera and Coleoptera each exhibited possible temporal and/or spatial segregation.  相似文献

The density of ground beetle populations was estimated by means of fenced pitfall traps in 2004–2008, in the environs of Biisk (Altai Territory) and Karasuk (Novosibirsk Province). In all, 64 species of ground beetles were revealed. The capture rates were usually higher in open than in fenced plots. No correlation was observed between the time of trap exposure and the captures. By the end of the 3rd–6th week of exposure, the fraction of juvenile and immature adults increased. The beetles captured within a fenced area 1 m2 usually fell into the traps in 2–3 days. The maximal density of carabids in the fenced areas was estimated at 55–60 ind./m2.  相似文献

Seasonal abundance and cropexploitation of the multicolored Asian ladybeetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas)(Coccinellidae: Coleoptera), were identifiedduring its initial establishment in the easternNorth Carolina agroecosystem. Densities ofH. axyridis adults and larvae werecompared with densities of previouslyestablished predaceous coccinellids in wheat, potato, corn and soybean, which are thepredominant crops in this region. One-hundred-fifty whole plant samples werevisually inspected for coccinellid adults andlarvae in each crop on six farms every 7 to 14days. H. axyridis adults colonizedwheat, potato and corn, but reproduced only inwheat and potato. Soybean fields were notcolonized. The presence of H. axyridisin a crop was typically associated with anabundance of aphids, with the exception ofpotato, and no aphids were encountered insoybean. In addition to H. axyridis, four other lady beetle species, Coccinellaseptempunctata L., Coleomegilla maculata(DeGeer), Hippodamia convergens (Guerin)and Cycloneda munda L., were encounteredin the landscape. In wheat, potato and corn, densities of H. axyridis adults averagedthroughout the 1995 and 1996 seasons wereseven, ten and 28 times lower, respectively, than the season average density of the leastabundant species of previously established ladybeetle, whereas these densities averaged 82, 42and 356 times lower, respectively, than theaverage density of the most abundantestablished coccinellid species. H.axyridis is commonly encountered in theeastern North Carolina agricultural landscape, but its impact on the existing coccinellidassemblage cannot yet be determined. Theresults presented provide a baseline againstwhich the results of future studies can becompared to determine if H. axyridis isdisplacing established species.  相似文献

Click beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) represent one of the largest groups of beetle insects. Some click beetles in larval form, known as wireworms, are destructive agricultural pests. Morphological identification of click beetles is generally difficult and requires taxonomic expertise. This study reports on the DNA barcoding of Japanese click beetles to enable their rapid and accurate identification. We collected and assembled 762 cytochrome oxidase subunit I barcode sequences from 275 species, which cover approximately 75% of the common species found on the Japanese main island, Honshu. This barcode library also contains 20 out of the 21 potential pest species recorded in Japan. Our analysis shows that most morphologically identified species form distinct phylogenetic clusters separated from each other by large molecular distances. This supports the general usefulness of the DNA barcoding approach for quick and reliable identification of Japanese elaterid species for environmental impact assessment, agricultural pest control, and biodiversity analysis. On the other hand, the taxonomic boundary in dozens of species did not agree with the boundary of barcode index numbers (a criterion for sequence-based species delimitation). These findings urge taxonomic reinvestigation of these mismatched taxa.  相似文献

Beetle diversity and species composition were studied using pitfall traps placed along three parallel transects that extended from the center of a downhill ski trail, 100 m into a large, unfragmented spruce-fir forest on Mount Mansfield State Park, VT, USA. Groups of beetles showed associations with three distinct habitats: ski trail openings (Agonum cupripenne, Amara spp., Poecilus lucublandus, Hypnoidus bicolor, and H. abbreviatus), edge (Pterostichus coracinus, Agonum retractum, Sphaeroderus canadensis, and Calathus ingratus), and forest (Pterostichus adstrictus, P. punctatissimus, P. brevicornis, Platynus decentis, Trechas apicalis, T. crassiscapus, and Eanus maculipennis). Consequently, carabid and elaterid species composition in the ski trail, edge, and 5 m into the unfragmented forest showed nearly complete turnover. Most beetles within the ski trail were colonizers from lower elevations; however, one species, H. bicolor, was a tundra species that appeared to have colonized lower elevations along the ski trail opening. Of "forest" beetles, only 2 of 540 individuals (< 0.5%) were collected in the ski trail opening. Thus, ski trails are strong barriers to dispersal for forest beetles, several of which are flightless or dimorphic and primarily short-winged. Consequently, fragmentation of mountain slopes by ski trails, especially those that run perpendicular to the climatic gradient, may put isolated populations at a greater risk of local extirpation.  相似文献

Although the taxonomy of click beetles (family Elateridae) has been studied extensively, inconsistencies remain. We examine here the relationships between species of Elateridae based on partial sequences of nuclear 28S ribosomal DNA. Specimens were collected primarily from Japan, while luminous click beetles were also sampled from Central and South America to investigate the origins of bioluminescence in Elateridae. Neighbor-joining, maximum-parsimony, and maximum-likelihood analyses produced a consistent basal topology with high statistical support that is partially congruent with the results of previous investigations based on the morphological characteristics of larvae and adults. The most parsimonious reconstruction of the "luminous" and "nonluminous" states, based on the present molecular phylogeny, indicates that the ancestral state of Elateridae was nonluminous. This suggests that the bioluminescence in click beetle evolved independent of that of other luminous beetles, such as Lampyridae, despite their common mechanisms of bioluminescence.  相似文献

The subfamily Denticollinae is a taxonomically diverse group in the family Elateridae. Denticollinae includes many morphologically similar species and crop pests, as well as many undescribed species at each local fauna. To construct a rapid and reliable identification system for this subfamily, the effectiveness of molecular species identification was assessed based on 421 cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of 84 morphologically identified species. Among the 84 morphospecies, molecular species identification of 60 species (71.4%) was consistent with their morphological identifications. Six cryptic and/or pseudocryptic species with large genetic divergence (>5%) were confirmed by their sympatric or allopatric distributions. However, 18 species, including a subspecies, had ambiguous genetic distances and shared overlapping intra- and interspecific genetic distances (range: 2.12%–3.67%) suggesting incomplete lineage sorting, introgression of mitochondrial genome, or affection by endosymbionts, such as Wolbachia infection, between species and simple genetic variation within species. In this study, we propose a conservative threshold of 3.6% for convenient molecular operational taxonomic unit (MOTU) identification in the subfamily Denticollinae based on the results of pairwise genetic distances analyses using neighbor-joining, mothur, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery analysis, and tree-based species delimitation by Poisson Tree Processes analysis. Using the 3.6% threshold, we identified 87 MOTUs and found 8 MOTUs in the interval between 2.5% to 3.5%. Evaluation of MOTUs identified in this range requires integrative species delimitation, including review of morphological and ecological differences as well as sensitive genetic markers. From this study, we confirmed that COI sequence is useful for reassessing species diversity for polymorphic and polytypic species occurring in sympatric and allopatric distributions, and for a single species having an extensively large habitat.  相似文献

The variability of the microbial population structure of the gut of omnivorous wireworms Agriotes obscurus (L) and Selatosomus aeneus (L) was studied. The limits of intra- and interspecific and intersite variation were determined. The stability of the microbial composition of the gut allows us to reveal the list of obligate saprotrophs (with 95% probability) using only five replications. In the case of S. aeneus, the influence of starvation and diet change was studied. Starvation changed the microbial population structure, while the diet did not. The results confirm that omnivorous wireworms have a stable gut microbial population, which suggests an advanced mutualistic relationship between wireworms and their gut bacteria, possibly assisting in digestion and providing for ecological flexibility of wireworms.  相似文献

The community of elaterid larvae of three sites (field and two fallows), representing different stages of secondary succession, were studied using soil sampling from 1986 to 1993. All three sites were abandoned arable land: a field cultivated until 1991, a fallow I abandoned in 1986, and a fallow II abandoned about 1976. The fallow II was used as a meadow after abandonment and was regularly mown until 1985, when cultivation stopped. Six species of Elateridae larvae were found at all three study sites. In the field, Agriotes obscurus, Athous niger, Athous subsuscus, Dalopius marginatus and Athous vittatus were found, A. niger and A. obscurus being the most abundant species. During cultivation, larval densities were very low, however, larval abundance increased up to 8.8 ± 8.3 ind. m-2 when cultivation stopped. Only small A. obscurus larvae were found during cultivation, whereas larval size increased after abandonment. In fallow I A. obscurus, A. niger, A. subsuscus, D. marginatus, and Agrypnus murinus were found and the average annual abundance fluctuated between 0.8 ± 1.4 to 40.8 ± 10.9 ind. m-2 with A. obscurus being the most abundant species. Fallow II supported the highest densities of wireworms from all plots studied (71.2±35.2 to 280.0±24.8 ind. m-2). A. obscurus, A. niger, A. subsuscus and D. marginatus were found in fallow II. The abundance of all larval Elateridae as well as the dominant species A. obscurus decreased during the study period, while simultaneously the occurrence of small sized A. obscurus larvae decreased. The frequency of cultivation and time elapsed since last cultivation appeared to be the most important factors affecting elaterid occurrence in the field and fallow I. In fallow II, the decrease in abundance correlates with the accumulation of a dense litter layer, which may correspond with soil surface structure, plant community changes or predator pressure.  相似文献
