Consumers may be exposed to formaldehyde during the use of liquid laundry detergent containing a preservative. The primary objective of this analysis was to present an approach to predict formaldehyde air emissions from a washing machine and the subsequent vapor concentrations in the laundry room air using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) Simulation Tool Kit for Indoor Air Quality and Inhalation Exposure, referred to as the IAQX model. A second objective was to identify key model input parameters for formaldehyde. This analysis recommends use of the IAQX emission Model 52 because it provided the best estimates by correlating the formaldehyde evaporation to the Henry's law constant and to the overall gas-phase mass transfer coefficient that was based on washing machine experimental results. The mass balance estimated that 99.7% of the initial formaldehyde mass in the washing machine was discharged down the drain with the wash water and the rest of the formaldehyde was emitted to the air from the top loading washing machine and the hot air clothes dryer. The predicted formaldehyde exposures were acceptable and much lower than the USEPA proposed targets for non-cancer effects and cancer risk.  相似文献

The foliar uptake and transport rates of formaldehyde as well as the abilities of leaf extracts to breakdown formaldehyde were investigated to discuss the formaldehyde removal efficiency and mechanism by five species of plants from air. Results showed that formaldehyde could be transported from air via leaves and roots to rhizosphere water. When exposed to 0.56 mg·m?3 formaldehyde, the formaldehyde removal rate ranged from 18.64 to 38.47 μg·h?1g?1 FW (fresh weight). According to the mass balance in the air–plant–water system, the main mechanism of the formaldehyde loss was its breakdown in plant tissues caused by both enzymatic reaction and redox reaction. Higher oxidation potentials of the leaf-extracts of Wedelia chinensis and Desmodium motorium corresponded well to higher abilities to breakdown added formaldehyde than other plants. Based on the different abilities of fresh and boiled leaf-extracts to dissipate formaldehyde, the enzymatic reaction in Chenopodium album L. was the dominant mechanism while the redox reaction in Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad. and Silene conoidea L. was the main formaldehyde breakdown mechanism when exposed to low-level formaldehyde in air. The redox mechanism suggested that the formaldehyde removal may be increased by an increasing level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by the environmental stress.  相似文献

Hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) has never been commercially produced in Canada and was imported in the past for use as a solvent. Anthropogenic activity is linked with the entry of this substance into the environment. While current Canadian sources of HCBD involve low-level releases, potentially they can be numerous. Until recently, the most significant point source of HCBD in Canada appeared to be the Cole Drain, which discharges into the St. Clair River at Sarnia, Ontario, and includes outfalls from an industrial landfill and a few industrial companies. HCBD has been detected in Canadian surface waters, sediments, aquatic organisms and, occasionally, air. Considering the properties of the substance, including its persistence and bioaccumulation characteristics, the environmental risk assessment of HCBD was focused on the aquatic environment. The results of a conservative assessment suggest that there is a risk of harmful effects for benthic organisms exposed to sediments contaminated by HCBD in the most contaminated part of the St. Clair River.  相似文献

Trace metals are components of releases to air emitted by copper and zinc production facilities in Canada. Six metals (copper, zinc, nickel, lead, cadmium, and arsenic) are examined as part of an overall environmental assessment of these releases. Estimates of metal deposition rates to soils and surface waters were derived from monitoring data in the vicinity of the production facilities and also through dispersion modelling studies. Fate and transport modelling of the metals deposited allowed an estimation of critical loads. Estimated annual deposition rates were compared with 25th-percentile critical loads typically representative of effects on sensitive organisms under 25% of conditions in sandy soils or circumneutral to acidic lake waters. The results of the comparison suggest that there is a potential for adverse effects on aquatic and/or soil-dwelling organisms from exposure to steadystate concentrations of metals in the vicinity of copper and zinc production facilities. Approaches of particular significance in these assessments include probabilistic estimation of critical loads for metals, allowance for the speciation of metals defining the bioavailable fraction and limiting critical effect levels to the high end of natural background metal concentrations.  相似文献

A nutrient-removal sequencing batch reactor operated with short anaerobic/aerobic cycles was subjected to different operating conditions, namely, cycle length, feeding pattern and feed composition. The changes in microbial population, as well as the contribution of microbial groups to the total nutrient removal, were estimated using the kinetic parameters obtained in this study. Denitrifying polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (DPAOs) were detected in the system, representing a fraction of 23% of phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs). The results suggest that DPAOs and non-DPAOs are different microorganisms. The presence of nitrate in the feed stimulated DPAOs to predominate over non-DPAOs. Feeding the reactor with a mixture of organic substrates also stimulated DPAOs. Glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) were likely to be present in the system and their development over PAOs was apparently favoured by increasing the aeration time and feeding during the aerobic phase. Summary Large overbank flood events play an important role in maintaining large‐scale ecological processes and connectivity along and across the floodplains and between the rivers and their floodplains in the southern Murray‐Darling Basin. However, the regulation of rivers means that extensive overbank flooding can only occur in the rare circumstance of extreme flood events. Recent environmental water allocations have focussed on the largest floodplain blocks (‘icon’ sites) and a small set of specific values (e.g. colonial nesting waterbirds), as well as on trialling fine‐scale manipulation of infrastructure (e.g. pumping) to water relatively small areas. There has been no comprehensive systematic assessment of the entire floodplain and its wider set of flood‐dependent natural assets (such as ecosystems and species; herein referred to as ‘natural values’) to maximise the effectiveness of environmental water use and to catalogue values likely to be lost. This paper describes an assessment of some 220 000 ha found to support flood‐dependent natural values in Victoria. We mapped the geographic distribution and estimated components of the flooding requirements (natural flooding frequency, and maximum period without flooding and minimum duration of each flooding event before significant deterioration) for each natural value. Using an example of one stretch of the River Murray, we show how the resultant spatial data can be used with floodplain inundation modelling to compare the outcomes of real or planned environmental watering events; potentially providing tools for management agencies to conserve a wider range of floodplain values than is currently the case. That is, water managers and the public can see what ecosystems and threatened species are intended to be maintained by environmental watering and what values are intended to be abandoned across the whole floodplain, rather than just seeing the small subset of values and ‘icon’ sites that are intended to be maintained. Examples are provided to illustrate how information about the location, water requirements and extent covered by potential floods for specific values can be used to build adaptive watering strategies for areas as large as the whole floodplain.  相似文献

A steady-state model of the heat and water transfer occurring in the upper respiratory tract of the kangaroo rat, Dipodomys spectabilis, is developed and tested. The model is described by a steady-state energy balance equation in which the rate of energy transfer from a liquid stream (representing the flow of heat and blood from the body core to the nasal region) is equated with the rate of energy transfer by thermal conduction from the nose tip to the environment. All of the variables in the equation except the flow rate of the liquid stream can be either measured directly or estimated from physiological measurements, permitting the solution of the equation for the liquid stream flow rate. After solving for the liquid stream flow rate by using data from three animals, the energy balance equation is used to compute values of energy transfer, expired air temperature, rates of water loss, and efficiency of vapor recovery for a variety of ambient conditions. These computed values are compared with values measured or estimated from physiological measurements on the same three animals, and the equation is thus shown to be internally consistent. To evaluate the model's predictive value, calculated expired air temperatures are compared with measured expired air temperatures of eight additional animals. Finally, the model is used to examine the general dependence of expired air temperature, of rates of water loss, and of efficiency of vapor recovery on ambient conditions.  相似文献

Nitrogen releases to air and water are low in most of Canada, but in southern areas with rapid development there are telltale signs of the problems from releases to air and water that are described elsewhere in this volume. These include higher nitrogen in water and releases to the atmosphere from urban areas, industry and agriculture. As a result, in parts of Ontario and Quebec underlain by Precambrian geology, nitrogen deposition is near the critical loads found for geologically similar areas of Europe. In particular, combined inputs of sulphuric and nitric acids are causing base cation depletion in forest soils and keeping some lakes at pH values too low to allow the recovery of biological communities. In southern Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, rapidly expanding human populations, industry and agriculture are causing high concentrations of nitrate in surface and groundwaters. At present, there is little sign of estuarine eutrophication in Canada, but it appears to be imminent on the Pacific coast, as the result of expanding human populations and intensifying agriculture in the lower Fraser Valley and Puget Sound. We had the opportunity to investigate the bacterial population in air samples, condensation water, and inner wall swabs from the Russian space station Mir. From the first and second air samples during the mission, 29 and 7 bacterial colonies were collected, respectively. The values were equivalent to 16.8 and 4.0 cfu/100 liter air, respectively. Condensation water was collected from three different sites. The total viable bacterial counts were 2.1 x 10(6), 5.2 x 10(2), and 3.0 x 10(1) cfu/ml. The phylogenetic position of each isolate was determined by total 16S rDNA sequencing. Bacteria from air samples were mainly Gram-positive (35/36 colonies), and staphylococci occupied dominant specifically (23/36 colonies). On the other hand, Gram-negative bacteria were mainly isolated from condensation water samples. Most strains were thought to be opportunistic pathogens or environmental bacteria (such as those that inhabit soil, water, or air) found on earth. However, 6 of 23 isolates were suspected to be new species according to phylogenetic analysis and quantitative DNA-DNA hybridization data. The isolation of the other levels 3 and 2 bacteria, using specific selective media, was unsuccessful because all samples were heavily contaminated with fungi. To overcome this situation, PCR methods were applied to survey most levels 3 and 2 pathogenic bacteria in the condensation water samples. Up to 380 different primers for bacterial pathogens were used in this study. Only Mycobacterium avium 16S DNA sequences, however, could be amplified from the three water samples. The average bacteria count was estimated to be about 10(4) organisms/ml water.  相似文献

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), including estrogen pharmaceuticals, have been an environmental concern for well more than a decade, but no environmental emissions inventory for Canada has yet been published. Endogenous estrogens cannot be distinguished from the equivalent pharmaceutical estrogens in the environment. Therefore, data were compiled to estimate total environmental emissions of endogenous and retail pharmaceutical estrogens by the Canadian population for year 2007. Approximately 1,700 kg of pharmaceutical estrogens were dispensed through retail pharmacies in Canada in 2007. Of this amount, total environmental emissions were estimated to be approximately 730 kg, half to surface water via municipal sewage outfalls (> 90% via sewage treatment plants providing primary, secondary, or tertiary treatment), and half to the soil vadose zone and (potentially) groundwater via in situ sewage treatment systems. Approximately 960 kg of endogenous estrogens were excreted by the Canadian population, with about 420 kg reaching the environment, again approximately half to each of surface water and soil/groundwater. In situ sewage treatment may deliver an equivalent load of estrogens to the environment as do sewage treatment plants, despite servicing only 22% of the Canadian population.  相似文献

Biological invasions are a leading threat to freshwater biodiversity worldwide. A central unanswered question of invasion ecology is why some introduced populations establish while most fail. Answering this question will allow resource managers to increase the specificity and effectiveness of control efforts and policy. We studied the establishment of spiny water flea (Bythotrephes longimanus) in the United States and Canada by modeling introduction failure caused by demographic stochasticity, environmental variation, and seasonal environmental forcing. We compared predicted establishment rates with observed invasions of inland lakes in Ontario, Canada. Our findings suggest that environmental forcing can cause “windows” of invasion opportunity so that timing of introductions might be a greater determinant of population establishment than demographic stochasticity and random environmental variation. We expect this phenomenon to be exhibited by species representing a wide range of life histories. For spiny water flea in North America, a large window of invasion opportunity opens around the fourth week of May, persists through the summer, and closes with decreasing water temperatures in autumn. These results show how timing of introductions with respect to seasonally forced environmental drivers can be a key determinant of establishment success. By focusing on introductions during windows of invasion opportunity, resource managers can more effectively control invasion rates.  相似文献

Stream-dwelling amphibians' occurrence, behaviour and reproductive success are strongly influenced by dynamic abiotic factors, for example, water flow and spray. These factors can disproportionately affect these frogs due to their dependency on specific favourable conditions for development and incapacity to disperse from unfavourable environments. We analysed the influence of environmental covariates on the detectability of Crossodactylus gaudichaudii, an amphibian species endemic to streams in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We conducted sampling in the streams of the Duas Bocas Biological Reserve, Brazil, and we measured air and water temperature, air humidity and pH of water on each sampling occasion. We estimated the effects of variables on the detectability of the species using single-season occupancy models. Our results indicated that the detectability of the species increases on occasions with higher water temperatures (24–26°C) and lower pH (5.0–5.5). We investigated the influence of these covariates only on the detectability of adult frogs, but it is likely that the physiochemical properties of stream water are more important to aquatic larvae, and hence, the probability of their detection. Given this, further studies should examine the relevance of covariates on the detectability of adult frogs as well as larvae.  相似文献

Formaldehyde is a neurotoxic environmental pollutant that can also be produced in the body by certain enzymatic reactions. To test for the potential consequences of an exposure of oligodendrocytes to formaldehyde, we used OLN-93 cells as a model system. Treatment with formaldehyde altered the cellular glutathione (GSH) content of these cells by inducing a rapid time- and concentration-dependent export of GSH. Half-maximal effects were observed for a formaldehyde concentration of about 0.2 mM. While the basal GSH efflux from OLN-93 cells was negligible even when the cellular GSH content was doubled by pre-incubation of the cells with cadmium chloride, the formaldehyde-stimulated export increased almost proportionally to the cellular GSH content. In addition, the stimulated GSH export required the presence of formaldehyde and was almost completely abolished after removal of the aldehyde. Analysis of kinetic parameters of the formaldehyde-induced GSH export revealed similar Km and Vmax values of around 100 nmol/mg and 40 nmol/(h mg), respectively, for both OLN-93 cells and cultured astrocytes. The transporter responsible for the formaldehyde-induced GSH export from OLN-93 cells is most likely the multidrug resistance protein 1 (Mrp1), since this transporter is expressed in these cells and since the inhibitor MK571 completely prevented the formaldehyde-induced GSH export. The rapid export of GSH from formaldehyde-treated viable oligodendroglial cells is likely to compromise the cellular antioxidative and detoxification potential which may contribute to the known neurotoxicity of formaldehyde.  相似文献

In conducting health assessments at hazardous‐waste sites, ATSDR staff must identify environmental chemical contaminants that pose a potential public health hazard. To assist health assessors in this effort, ATSDR has developed environmental media evaluation guides (EMEGs). EMEGs have been developed for water, soil, and air. The EMEG values are expressed as a range to account for the range in exposures in different segments of the population. The use of EMEGs provides health assessors with a consistent strategy for selecting environmental contaminants to be further evaluated in the health assessment process.  相似文献

Climate change models predict a 2 to 6° C increase in air temperature within the next 100 years in the Maritime Provinces of eastern Canada. Higher air temperatures are expected to contribute to increased water temperatures, alterations in stream flow conditions, and ultimately reductions in fish growth. Mean annual size-at-age of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar decreased in the Northwest Miramichi and Southwest Miramichi Rivers between 1971–1999. Lengths-at-age of juveniles were significantly correlated between the two rivers. For Atlantic salmon parr, stronger associations between inter-cohort fork length ( L F) than intra-cohort L F were observed, suggesting that environmental conditions in the current year of growth have the more significant effects on size of age 2 year parr than conditions encountered the previous year by age 1 year parr of the same cohort. Fork lengths of parr were significantly and negatively associated with spring air and water temperatures. In the Miramichi River, increases in air and water temperature as predicted from climate change models may adversely affect growth of juvenile Atlantic salmon parr, reducing the overall productivity of the Atlantic salmon populations in this region.  相似文献

Currently an estimated 40% of world deaths are due to environmental degradation. Hydrogen isotope (δ2H) measurements of consumer tissues in aquatic food webs are useful tracers of diet and provenance and may be combined with δ13C and δ15N analyses to evaluate complex trophic relationships in aquatic systems. However, δ2H measurements of organic tissues are complicated by analytical issues (e.g., H exchangeability, lack of matrix‐equivalent calibration standards, and lipid effects) and physiological mechanisms, such as H isotopic exchange with ambient water during protein synthesis and the influence of metabolic water. In this study, δ2H (and δ15N) values were obtained from fish muscle samples from Lake Winnipeg, Canada, 2007–2010, and were assessed for the effects of species, feeding habits, and ambient water δ2H values. After lipid removal, we used comparative equilibration to calibrate muscle δ2H values to nonexchangeable δ2H equivalents and controlled for H isotopic exchange between sample and laboratory ambient water vapor. We then examined the data for evidence of trophic δ2H enrichment by comparing δ2H values with δ15N values. Our results showed a significant logarithmic correlation between fork length and δ2H values, and no strong relationships between δ15N and δ2H. This suggests the so‐called apparent trophic compounding effect and the influence of metabolic water into tissue H were the potential mechanisms for δ2H enrichment. We evaluated the importance of water in controlling δ2H values of fish tissues and, consequently, the potential of H isotopes as a tracer of provenance by taking account of confounding variables such as body size and trophic effects. The δ2H values of fish appear to be a good tracer for tracking provenance, and we present a protocol for the use of H isotopes in aquatic ecosystems, which should be applicable to a broad range of marine and freshwater fish species. We advise assessing size effects or working with fish of relatively similar mass when inferring fish movements using δ2H measurements.  相似文献

Formaldehyde dehydrogenase was purified to electrophoretic and column chromatographic homogeneity from rat liver cytosolic fraction by a procedure which includes ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-cellulose-, hydroxyapatite-, Mono Q-chromatography, and gel filtration. Its molecular mass was estimated to be 41 kDa by gel filtration and SDS-PAGE, suggesting that it is a monomer. It utilized neither methylglyoxal nor aldehydes except formaldehyde as a substrate. It has been reported that liver class III alcohol dehydrogenase and formaldehyde dehydrogenase are the same enzyme and oxidize formaldehyde and long chain primary alcohols. However, the enzyme examined here did not use n-octanoi as a substrate. The Km values for formaldehyde and NAD+ were 5.09 and 2.34 microM at 25 degrees C, respectively. The amino acid sequences of 10 peptides obtained from the purified enzyme after digestion with either V8 protease or lysyl endopeptidase were determined. From these results, the enzyme was proved to be different from the previously described mammalian formaldehyde dehydrogenase and is the first true formaldehyde dehydrogenase to be isolated from a mammalian source.  相似文献
