A probabilistic ecological risk assessment of phenol was undertaken to determine the risks posed to biota as a result of phenol release to the Canadian environment. A three-tiered approach was used to estimate risks, with progressively more realistic assumptions being applied at each tier. In Canada, the major sources of phenol are municipal wastewater treatment plants, pulp, paper and wood products mills, steel and metal products facilities and refineries. Thus, the highest exposures will occur in receiving waters near these point sources, primarily due to the short half-life of phenol in the aquatic environment. Sensitive aquatic organisms include salmonids (e.g., rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss) and amphibians (e.g., leopard frog Rana pipiens). The results of the risk assessment indicate that species are exposed to elevated levels of phenol near point sources, but these levels represent only a minor risk to aquatic biota.  相似文献

Inorganic chloramines are formed when chlorine and ammonia are combined in water. These substances are frequently used as a secondary disinfectant for drinking water and are by-products of processes involving the disinfection of wastewaters and the control of biological fouling in cooling water systems. For chloraminate drinking water, the total residual chlorine (TRC) concentration may be almost completely due to monochloramine. Based on 1995 and 1996 survey data, the most significant and prevalent TRC loading to the Canadian environment is from municipal wastewater releases. Drinking water releases are the next most important source of chloramine entry into the Canadian environment, while TRC releases from other sources, such as cooling water, zebra mussel control practices and industrial wastewater, are much less important. A probabilistic water quality model was used to model two wastewater discharges and a cooling water discharge to different freshwater systems. The resulting exposure distributions were then compared with three incipient lethality endpoints, i.e., 50% mortality to the invertebrate Ceriodaphnia dubia and 50% and 20% mortality to juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). For each discharge scenario studied, there were moderate to high probabilities of significant adverse effects on aquatic life up to 1.9?km from the effluent sources.  相似文献

Textile mill effluents (TMEs) are wastewater discharges from textile mills that are involved in wet processes such as scouring, neutralizing, desizing, mercerizing, carbonizing, fulling, bleaching, dyeing, printing and other wet finishing activities. TMEs are complex mixtures containing a wide variety of chemicals which have a range of pH, temperature, colour and oxygen demand characteristics. Most wet processing mills in Canada discharge to municipal wastewater collection systems where those effluents receive some form of wastewater treatment. This paper reports the results of a tiered assessment approach that was used to determine the impacts on the aquatic environment of whole effluents discharged by wet processing textile mills in Canada. A conservative assessment indicated that no substantial threat to the aquatic environment was associated with TMEs receiving secondary or tertiary treatment, on- site or at a municipal wastewater treatment plant, prior to discharge to receiving waters. In the case of TMEs receiving only primary treatment or no treatment prior to discharge, a weight-of-evidence risk assessment supported the conclusion that those effluents could produce significant environmental harm in aquatic environments.  相似文献

Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs) are a group of surfactants that are widely used for industrial, commercial, institutional and household purposes in Canada. Ethoxylation of nonylphenol (NP) occurs upon reaction with ethylene oxide, producing NPEs, although NP is also used in the production of the antioxidant tris(nonylphenol)phosphite. NP and NPEs are not produced naturally, and the primary route of environmental exposure to NP and NPEs is via textile mill, pulp and paper mill and municipal wastewater treatment plant effluents. NPEs occur as complex mixtures and are described by the average ethoxylate chain length, which ranges from 1 to 100. The environmental fate of NPEs is strongly dependent on the effluent and, the degree and type of treatment to which the effluent is subjected. An ecological risk assessment was performed to determine if exposure to NP and NPEs results in effects on the Canadian environment, based on current use patterns. The Canadian ecological risk assessment found that adverse effects on aquatic organisms are likely, although assumptions were made with respect to appropriate dilution factors.  相似文献

随着70年代污染生态毒理学的发展,微宇宙作为评价化学品的环境影响的有力工具日益受到重视。由于从点源和非点源释放的化学物质可经直接或间接途径进入水生态系统,水生微宇宙在环境研究中的应用发展很快。早期的研究工作侧重于化学污染物在水环境的归宿。自70年代末以来,研究注意力逐渐集中于有毒物质在水生态系统内不同生物学组织水平上的生态学效应。本文分下列4个方面进行述评:(1)关于模拟生态系统的若干基本概念;(2)应用于环境研究的不同类型水生微宇宙;(3)尚有争议的若干问题;(4)水生微宇宙技术应用的新动向和展望。  相似文献

Potential ecological risks of two heavy metals (Cu, Pb) and three explosives (TNT, RDX, HMX) were determined for a military gunnery range. Since a portion of the site will be submerged after the construction of a flood control reservoir, risk assessment of the site was conducted over two time points: at the current state and after the construction of the flood control reservoir. Terrestrial plants, terrestrial invertebrates, birds, mammals, and aquatic invertebrates were selected as affected ecological receptors at the study site. Potential noncarcinogenic risk was found only in one terrestrial site for Cu and RDX at both time points: For terrestrial plants, ecological hazard quotient (EHQ) by Cu was 1.22. For terrestrial invertebrates, EHQs for Cu and RDX were 1.38 and 6.47, respectively. EHQs in the aquatic environment increased to some extents after the reservoir construction, but the values were less than 1.0. A comparison between EHQs before and after the construction for the same site shows that the reservoir construction would not significantly increase the overall ecological risk, suggesting that the reservoir construction influenced the potential ecological risks at the study site, but the changes were acceptable. Uncertainties involved in the assessment process were identified and discussed.  相似文献

The terrestrial environment acts as a “sink” for contaminants that have been purposely or accidentally released into the environment. Science and policy that support protective measures for terrestrial ecosystems have run behind those of aquatic toxicology and water quality concerns. As a result ecological risk assessment (ERA) involving terrestrial environments tends to be conducted at a simplistic level, relying on numeric targets (soil quality criteria) as a basis for decision-making. However, soil criteria for ecological receptors are somewhat deficient in terms of the numbers available and the data that supports these numbers. Direct toxicity assessments (DTA) for terrestrial environments, such as those used for water quality evaluations, can provide additional useful information about the toxicity and bioavailability of mixtures of contaminants present in soils. This article outlines the approaches used for assessing the toxicity of soil contaminants in terrestrial environments and critiques their advantages and pitfalls.  相似文献

经基因改造的转基因抗虫棉在我国已开始进入大规模商业化应用,对此进行安全性评价是一个十分重要的生态学问题。本文比较了抗虫棉和常规棉中过氧化物酶、多酚氧化酶、酯酶等几种重要同工酶的酶活和酶谱的差异,发现在一定生长期中,抗虫棉的可溶性过氧化物酶活性显著高于常规棉,酯酶的酶活和酶谱在两种棉花中也存在着差异。认为这些差异可能影响抗虫棉的次生代谢,进而导致一些综合的生态学效应,提出植物生理上的改变也是转基因植物安全性评价研究的重要内容。  相似文献

污水和污泥中的人工合成麝香分析方法   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
市政污水和污泥排放是人工合成麝香输入土壤环境的主要途径,污染物排放是生态风险评价中暴露分析模型的必要输入参数。目前有关土壤中人工合成麝香的生态风险研究较少报道,其中缺乏快捷、简便、准确的检测技术是限制这方面研究的主要因素之一。本研究针对污水的固相萃取法和液-液萃取法,以及脱水污泥的索氏萃取法和快速溶剂萃取(ASE)法进行比较和优化,结果表明,采用液-液萃取法和ASE法结合硅胶小柱净化过程检测水样和污泥样品中的人工合成麝香能够获得较好的回收率。最后利用这2种方法检测了北京某污水处理厂的进出水和脱水污泥中的佳乐麝香(HHCB)和吐纳麝香(AHTN)的含量,结果表明,进水中的HHCB和AHTN的含量分别为897~1270ng·L-1和331~488ng·L-1,出水中含量分别为201~226ng·L-1和65~130ng·L-1,脱水污泥中的含量分别为137~348ng.g-1和64~138ng.g-1。  相似文献

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) have gained increased notoriety due to their continued detection in environmental media and consequently their threat to human and animal health. The continuing spread of antibiotic resistance throughout the environment is of growing environmental and public health concern, making it difficult to treat harmful resistant diseases. This paper examines the presence of antibiotics, ARB, and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments; the effectiveness of current water treatment strategies to remove them; and risk assessment methods available that can be used to evaluate the risk from antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics, ARB, and ARGs have been reported at varying levels in wastewater treatment plants, hospital wastewater, irrigation water, recreational water, and drinking water. There are many different water treatments capable of reducing antibiotic resistance (including chlorination, UV, and ozone); however, no one method can fully eliminate it with much variation in the reported effects. Risk assessment models can be used for interpreting field data into the risk to human health from antibiotic resistance. Currently, there is no gold standard risk assessment method for evaluating antibiotic resistance. Methods in this area need further development to reflect evolving risk assessment methodologies and dynamic data as it emerges.  相似文献

In 1997, Oregon enacted rules that define an unacceptable population-level risk as a >10% chance of >20% of the total local population receiving an exposure greater than the toxicity reference value. This rule applies to populations of plants and animals not listed as threatened or endangered. An operational procedure was developed to perform such population-level ecological risk assessments. This case study describes how this procedure was used to develop site-specific groundwater remedial action objectives for resident aquatic populations at a site in Northwest Oregon, where an upland petroleum pipeline released gasoline-range hydrocarbons (TPH-G) into soils and groundwater immediately upgradient of the Tualatin River. With an interim response in place, the goal was to proactively establish a remedial action objective that would equate to an acceptable risk level for populations of aquatic receptors potentially threatened by future groundwater discharges to the river. Approximately 10 and 32% dilutions of the water-soluble fraction of pure product produced an acceptable risk level for zooplankton and forage fish populations, respectively. The proposed population-level remedial action objective, based on zooplankton as the most sensitive receptor, was a TPH-G groundwater concentration of 17.4?mg/L.  相似文献

Summary Nitrifying biofilms were constructed on low density polyester Dacron for the bioremediation of nitrogen from wastewater effluent of a municipal treatment plant. Dacron disks were inoculated with wastewater sludge enriched for 15 days for either ammonia- or nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (AOB or NOB, respectively) and packed into glass bioreactors. Wastewater effluent containing high levels of ammonia, nitrite, and phosphate was collected and fed to inoculated and uninoculated bioreactors. Both inoculated bioreactors showed stable nitrification efficiencies, removing 96 and 76% of the ammonia and 12 and 35% of the nitrite for AOB- and NOB-inoculated bioreactors, respectively. Efficiencies of phosphate removal were similar in both inoculated and uninoculated bioreactors, indicating that nitrifiers were not required for this process. AOB-inoculated bioreactors accumulated nitrite mid-way through the experiment and had low rates of conversion to nitrate, suggesting slow nitrite oxidizer growth. DGGE and sequence analysis of AOB 16S rRNA genes showed enrichment of Nitrosomonas spp. in both inoculated bioreactors, and a dominance of Nitrosospira spp. in non-inoculated bioreactors. This study describes an inexpensive and efficient technology for removing ammonia and nitrite from wastewater effluents of municipal treatment plants before its release to the environment.  相似文献

An ecological risk assessment framework for onsite wastewater treatment systems and other localized sources of nutrients is presented, including problem formulation, characterization of exposure, characterization of effects, and risk characterization. The framework is most pertinent to the spatial scale of residential treatment systems located adjacent to small ponds, streams, or lagoons and some parts of shallow estuaries. Freshwater and estuarine ecosystems are distinguished based on differences in nutrient dynamics. Phosphorus exposure is the major determinant of phytoplankton production in most North American lakes. Nitrate can be directly toxic to aquatic biota such as amphibians. In shallow estuaries or lagoons, nitrogen is the primary stressor, which can be directly toxic to vegetation or can interact with biota to produce secondary stressors (limited light penetration, oxygen limitation, reduction in habitat, or reduction in forage vegetation or prey). Algal production, macrophyte production, fish community abundance and production, benthic community abundance and production, and amphibian community abundance and production are examples of risk assessment endpoint properties. Models and measurement methods for the characterization of exposure and effects are discussed, as well as sources and quantification of uncertainty. Example weight-of-evidence tables are presented for failure scenarios involving traditional and emerging onsite wastewater system technologies.  相似文献

Abstract

Anticancer drugs used in cancer treatment are excreted unchanged or as metabolites by feces and urine in hospitals and households. These drugs enter the municipal sewage system but wastewater treatment plants are not capable of removing all of these micro pollutants. In many countries such as Brazil, sanitation departments do not provide service, nor have access to all of the population, therefore most sewage is still released into untreated receiving bodies. This study analyzes the consumption of anticancer drugs in a Brazilian hospital located in one of the 10 municipalities with the best sanitation index in the country. It estimates its environmental risk in aquatic matrixes by the European Guideline on the Environmental Risk Assessment of Medicinal Products for Human Use. Among the 20 drugs analyzed, the three most consumed (cyclophosphamide, 5-fluoruracil, and cytarabine) show a predicted environmental concentration value greater than the action limit of 0.01?µg/L recommended by the guideline. The risk assessment was performed on all pharmaceuticals consumed to get a greater awareness of risk. Results do not indicate local environmental risk but, considering that the study was performed under the best sanitation scenario, it cannot be extrapolated in the other municipalities. The study highlights that development of suitable methodologies should be considered to perform environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in developing countries sanitation conditions.  相似文献

以次生代谢物质萜烯类、黄酮类以及单宁等为基础的自身化学抗虫性一直是植物化学防御的核心.随着基因重组技术的发展,许多作物获得了一种新的化学防御形式,即以表达外源基因产物来进行防御.外源抗虫蛋白与内源抗虫物质的协调性问题,在利用外源基因工程改良植物抗虫性时是非常重要的,同时也是转基因作物安全性和生态学评价的重要方面.转基因植物中外源与内源抗虫系统间的协调性的研究取得了一些成果,但尚未引起人们足够的重视.综述了离体条件下和在转基因植物体内,外源抗虫蛋白Bt和GNA等与植物次生代谢物质以及各抗虫蛋白之间交互作用的研究进展,并探讨了研究各抗虫因子交互作用的意义.  相似文献
