Very few studies have attempted to disentangle the respective role of ontogeny and water stress on leaf photosynthetic attributes. The relative significance of both effects on photosynthetic attributes has been investigated in leaves of field‐grown almond trees [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb] during four growth cycles. Leaf ontogeny resulted in enhanced leaf dry weight per unit area (Wa), greater leaf dry‐to‐fresh weight ratio and lower N content per unit of leaf dry weight (Nw). Concomitantly, area‐based maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax), maximum electron transport rate (Jmax), mesophyll conductance to CO2 diffusion (gm)′ and light‐saturated net photosynthesis (Amax) declined in both well‐watered and water‐stressed almond leaves. Although gm and stomatal conductance (gs) seemed to be co‐ordinated, a much stronger coordination in response to ontogeny and prolonged water stress was observed between gm and the leaf photosynthetic capacity. Under unrestricted water supply, the leaf age‐related decline of Amax was equally driven by diffusional and biochemical limitations. Under restricted soil water availability, Amax was mainly limited by gs and, to a lesser extent, by photosynthetic capacity and gm. When both ontogeny and water stress effects were combined, diffusional limitations was the main determinant of photosynthesis limitation, while stomatal and biochemical limitations contributed similarly.  相似文献

Dynamic light conditions require continuous adjustments of stomatal aperture. The kinetics of stomatal conductance (gs) is hypothesized to be key to plant productivity and water use efficiency (WUE). Using step-changes in light intensity, we studied the diversity of light-induced gs kinetics in relation to stomatal anatomy in five banana genotypes (Musa spp.) and modeled the impact of both diffusional and biochemical limitations on photosynthesis (A). The dominant A limiting factor was the diffusional limitation associated with gs kinetics. All genotypes exhibited a strong limitation of A by gs, indicating a priority for water saving. Moreover, significant genotypic differences in gs kinetics and gs limitations of A were observed. For two contrasting genotypes, the impact of differential gs kinetics was further investigated under realistic diurnally fluctuating light conditions and at the whole-plant level. Genotype-specific stomatal kinetics observed at the leaf level was corroborated at whole-plant level by transpiration dynamics, validating that genotype-specific responses are still maintained despite differences in gs control at different locations in the leaf and across leaves. However, under diurnally fluctuating light conditions the impact of gs speediness on A and intrinsic (iWUE) depended on time of day. During the afternoon there was a setback in kinetics: absolute gs and gs responses to light were damped, strongly limiting A and impacting diurnal iWUE. We conclude the impact of differential gs kinetics depended on target light intensity, magnitude of change, gs prior to the change in light intensity, and particularly time of day.  相似文献

In this study, we have examined several physiological, biochemical and morphological features of Buddleja davidii plants growing at 1300 m above sea level (a.s.l.) and 3400 m a.s.l., respectively, to identify coordinated changes in leaf properties in response to reduced CO2 partial pressure (Pa). Our results confirmed previous findings that foliar δ13C, photosynthetic capacity and foliar N concentration on a leaf area basis increased, whereas stomatal conductance (gs) decreased with elevation. The net CO2 assimilation rate (Amax), maximum rate of electron transport (Jmax) and respiration increased significantly with elevation, although no differences were found in carboxylation efficiency of Rubisco (Vcmax). Consequently, also the Jmax to Vcmax ratio was significantly increased by elevation, indicating that the functional balance between Ribulose‐1,5‐biphosphate (RuBP) consumption and RuBP regeneration changes as elevation increases. Our results also indicated a homeostatic response of CO2 transfer conductance inside the leaf (mesophyll conductance, gm) to increasing elevation. In fact, with elevation, gm also increased compensating for the strong decrease in gs and, thus, in the Pi (intercellular partial pressure of CO2) to Pa ratio, leading to similar chloroplast partial pressure of CO2 (Pc) to Pa ratio at different elevations. Because there were no differences in Vcmax, also A measured at similar PPFD and leaf temperature did not differ statistically with elevation. As a consequence, a clear relationship was found between A and gm, and between A and the sum of gs and gm. These data suggest that the higher dry mass δ13C of leaves at the higher elevation, indicative of lower long‐term Pc/Pa ratio, cannot be attributed to changes either in diffusional resistances or in carboxylation efficiency. We speculate that because temperature significantly decreases as the elevation increases, it dramatically affects CO2 diffusion and hence Pc/Pa and, consequently, is the primary factor influencing 13C discrimination at high elevation.  相似文献

The levels of stomatal, mesophyll and biochemical limitations in CO2 assimilation of ‘Bluecrop’ highbush blueberry leaves were compared at two different levels of leaf water potential. The leaf water potentials were ?1.49 and ?1.94 MPa in daily-irrigated (DI) and non-irrigated (NI) shrubs, respectively. The NI shrubs represented plants under moderate water stress. Mesophyll conductance (g m) and chloroplastic CO2 concentration (C c) were estimated by combined measurements of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence under various intercellular CO2 concentrations (C i). Net CO2 assimilation rates (A n) as a function of C c were used for calculating maximum carboxylation efficiency (α cmax) at the real sites of CO2 assimilation. Maximum A n (A nmax) from the light response curves at 400 μmol mol?1 air of ambient CO2 concentration (C a) were lower in the leaves of NI shrubs than in those of DI ones. However, electron transport rates were higher in the leaves of NI shrubs than in those of DI ones. The decrease in CO2 assimilation following water stress may be caused by a decrease in g m rather than a decrease in stomatal conductance (g s) according to limitation analysis. Limitation rates by g s, calculated at 400 μmol mol?1 air of C a in A n-C i curves, were not significantly different between the leaves of DI and NI shrubs. However, limitation rates by g m from A n-C c curves were significantly higher in the leaves of NI shrubs than in those of DI ones. Maximum carboxylation efficiency (α cmax) values calculated from the A n-C c curve, contrary to those calculated from the A n-C i curve, were higher in the leaves of NI shrubs than in those of DI ones. Consequently, mesophyll limitation than stomatal and biochemical limitations mainly down-regulated the photosynthesis in the leaves of ‘Bluecrop’ blueberry shrubs during moderate water stress.  相似文献

Light gradients within tree canopies play a major role in the distribution of plant resources that define the photosynthetic capacity of sun and shade leaves. However, the biochemical and diffusional constraints on gas exchange in sun and shade leaves in response to light remain poorly quantified, but critical for predicting canopy carbon and water exchange. To investigate the CO2 diffusion pathway of sun and shade leaves, leaf gas exchange was coupled with concurrent measurements of carbon isotope discrimination to measure net leaf photosynthesis (An), stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) in Eucalyptus tereticornis trees grown in climate controlled whole‐tree chambers. Compared to sun leaves, shade leaves had lower An, gm, leaf nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity (Amax) but gs was similar. When light intensity was temporarily increased for shade leaves to match that of sun leaves, both gs and gm increased, and An increased to values greater than sun leaves. We show that dynamic physiological responses of shade leaves to altered light environments have implications for up‐scaling leaf level measurements and predicting whole canopy carbon gain. Despite exhibiting reduced photosynthetic capacity, the rapid up‐regulation of gm with increased light enables shade leaves to respond quickly to sunflecks.  相似文献

Mesophyll conductance (g m) is essential to determine accurate physiological parameters used to model photosynthesis in forest ecosystems. This study aimed to determine the effects of time of day on photosynthetic parameters, and to assess the effect of using either intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) or chloroplast CO2 concentration (C c), on maximum carboxylation velocity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), V cmax. We used Amazonian saplings of Myrcia paivae and Minquartia guianensis. Photosynthetic parameters were measured using an infrared gas analyzer (IRGA); g m was determined using both gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence and gas-exchange data alone. Leaf thickness (L T) and specific leaf area (SLA) were also measured. Air temperature, relative humidity or understory light did not correlate with g m and on average daily IRGA-fluorometer-determined g m was 0.04 mol(CO2) m?2 s?1 for M. paivae and 0.05 mol(CO2) m?2 s?1 for M. guianensis. Stomatal conductance (g s), g m, electron transport rate (J F), and light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) were lower in the afternoon than in the morning. However, no effect of time of day was observed on V cmax. L T and SLA did not affect any of the examined parameters. IRGA-determined g m was almost the double of the value obtained using the IRGA-fluorescence method. V cmax values determined using C c were about 25% higher than those obtained using C i, which highlighted the importance of using C c in V cmax calculation. Decline in P Nmax at the end of the afternoon reflected variations in g s and g m rather than changes in V cmax. Diurnal variation in g m appeared to be associated more with endogenous than with atmospheric factors.  相似文献

A review of the literature revealed that a variety of methods are currently used for fitting net assimilation of CO2–chloroplastic CO2 concentration (A–Cc) curves, resulting in considerable differences in estimating the A–Cc parameters [including maximum ribulose 1·5‐bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) carboxylation rate (Vcmax), potential light saturated electron transport rate (Jmax), leaf dark respiration in the light (Rd), mesophyll conductance (gm) and triose‐phosphate utilization (TPU)]. In this paper, we examined the impacts of fitting methods on the estimations of Vcmax, Jmax, TPU, Rd and gm using grid search and non‐linear fitting techniques. Our results suggested that the fitting methods significantly affected the predictions of Rubisco‐limited (Ac), ribulose 1,5‐bisphosphate‐limited (Aj) and TPU‐limited (Ap) curves and leaf photosynthesis velocities because of the inconsistent estimate of Vcmax, Jmax, TPU, Rd and gm, but they barely influenced the Jmax : Vcmax, Vcmax : Rd and Jmax : TPU ratio. In terms of fitting accuracy, simplicity of fitting procedures and sample size requirement, we recommend to combine grid search and non‐linear techniques to directly and simultaneously fit Vcmax, Jmax, TPU, Rd and gm with the whole A–Cc curve in contrast to the conventional method, which fits Vcmax, Rd or gm first and then solves for Vcmax, Jmax and/or TPU with Vcmax, Rd and/or gm held as constants.  相似文献

In this study it has been shown that increased diffusional resistances caused by salt stress may be fully overcome by exposing attached leaves to very low [CO2] (~ 50 µmol mol?1), and, thus a non‐destructive‐in vivo method to correctly estimate photosynthetic capacity in stressed plants is reported. Diffusional (i.e. stomatal conductance, gs, and mesophyll conductance to CO2, gm) and biochemical limitations to photosynthesis (A) were measured in two 1‐year‐old Greek olive cultivars (Chalkidikis and Kerkiras) subjected to salt stress by adding 200 mm NaCl to the irrigation water. Two sets of ACi curves were measured. A first set of standard ACi curves (i.e. without pre‐conditioning plants at low [CO2]), were generated for salt‐stressed plants. A second set of ACi curves were measured, on both control and salt‐stressed plants, after pre‐conditioning leaves at [CO2] of ~ 50 µmol mol?1 for about 1.5 h to force stomatal opening. This forced stomata to be wide open, and gs increased to similar values in control and salt‐stressed plants of both cultivars. After gs had approached the maximum value, the ACi response was again measured. The analysis of the photosynthetic capacity of the salt‐stressed plants based on the standard ACi curves, showed low values of the Jmax (maximum rate of electron transport) to Vcmax (RuBP‐saturated rate of Rubisco) ratio (1.06), that would implicate a reduced rate of RuBP regeneration, and, thus, a metabolic impairment. However, the analysis of the ACi curves made on pre‐conditioned leaves, showed that the estimates of the photosynthetic capacity parameters were much higher than in the standard ACi responses. Moreover, these values were similar in magnitude to the average values reported by Wullschleger (Journal of Experimental Botany 44, 907–920, 1993) in a survey of 109 C3 species. These findings clearly indicates that: (1) salt stress did affect gs and gm but not the biochemical capacity to assimilate CO2 and therefore, in these conditions, the sum of the diffusional resistances set the limit to photosynthesis rates; (2) there was a linear relationship (r2 = 0.68) between gm and gs, and, thus, changes of gm can be as fast as those of gs; (3) the estimates of photosynthetic capacity based on ACi curves made without removing diffusional limitations are artificially low and lead to incorrect interpretations of the actual limitations of photosynthesis; and (4) the analysis of the photosynthetic properties in terms of stomatal and non‐stomatal limitations should be replaced by the analysis of diffusional and non‐diffusional limitations of photosynthesis. Finally, the C3 photosynthesis model parameterization using in vitro‐measured and in vivo‐measured kinetics parameters was compared. Applying the in vivo‐measured Rubisco kinetics parameters resulted in a better parameterization of the photosynthesis model.  相似文献

Stomatal closure and metabolic impairment under drought stress limits photosynthesis. The objective of this study was to determine major stomatal and metabolic factors involved in photosynthetic responses to drought and recovery upon re‐watering in a C3 perennial grass species, Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Two genotypes differing in drought resistance, ‘Midnight’ (tolerant) and ‘Brilliant’ (sensitive), were subjected to drought stress for 15 days and then re‐watered for 10 days in growth chambers. Single‐leaf net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (Tr) decreased during drought, with a less rapid decline in ‘Midnight’ than in ‘Brilliant’. Photochemical efficiency, Rubisco activity and activation state declined during drought, but were significantly higher in ‘Midnight’ than in ‘Brilliant’. The relationship between A and internal leaf CO2 concentration (A/Ci curve) during drought and re‐watering was analyzed to estimate the relative influence of stomatal and non‐stomatal components on photosynthesis. Stomatal limitation (Ls %), non‐stomatal limitation (Lns %), CO2 compensation point (CP) and dark respiration (Rd) increased with stress duration in both genotypes, but to a lesser extent in ‘Midnight’. Maximum CO2 assimilation rate (Amax), carboxylation efficiency (CE) and mesophyll conductance (gm) declined, but ‘Midnight’ had significantly higher levels of Amax, CE and gm than ‘Brilliant’. Maximum carboxylation rate of Rubisco (Vcmax) and ribulose‐1,5‐bisphospate (RuBP) regeneration capacity mediated by maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) decreased from moderate to severe drought stress in both genotypes, but to a greater extent in ‘Brilliant’ than in ‘Midnight’. After re‐watering, RWC restored to about 90% of the control levels in both genotypes, whereas A, gs, Tr and Fv/Fm was only partially recovered, with a higher recovery level in ‘Midnight’ than in ‘Brilliant’. Rubisco activity and activation state restored to the control level after re‐watering, with more rapid increase in ‘Midnight’ than in ‘Brilliant’. The values of Ls, Lns, CP and Rd declined, and Amax, CE, Vcmax, Jmax and gm increased after re‐watering, with more rapid change in all parameters in ‘Midnight’ than in ‘Brilliant’. These results indicated that the maintenance of higher A and Amax under drought stress in drought‐tolerant Kentucky bluegrass could be attributed to higher Rubico activation state, higher CE and less stomatal limitation. The ability to resume metabolic activity (Amax, CE, Fv/Fm and Rubisco) was observed in the drought‐tolerant genotype and is the most likely cause for the increased recuperative ability of photosynthesis. Incomplete recovery of photosynthesis upon re‐watering could be attributable to lasting stomatal limitations caused by severe drought damage in both genotypes. Promoting rapid stomatal recovery from drought stress may be critical for plants to resume full photosynthetic capacity in C3 perennial grass species.  相似文献

Comparing with other angiosperms, most members within the family Orchidaceae have lower photosynthetic capacities. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Cypripedium and Paphiopedilum are closely related phylogenetically in Orchidaceae, but their photosynthetic performances are different. We explored the roles of internal anatomy and diffusional conductance in determining photosynthesis in three Cypripedium and three Paphiopedilum species, and quantitatively analyzed their diffusional and biochemical limitations to photosynthesis. Paphiopedilum species showed lower light-saturated photosynthetic rate (A N), stomatal conductance (g s), and mesophyll conductance (g m) than Cypripedium species. A N was positively correlated with g s and g m. And yet, in both species A N was more strongly limited by g m than by biochemical factors or g s. The greater g s of Cypripedium was mainly affected by larger stomatal apparatus area and smaller pore depth, while the less g m of Paphiopedilum was determined by the reduced surface area of mesophyll cells and chloroplasts exposed to intercellular airspace per unit of leaf area, and much thicker cell wall thickness. These results suggest that leaf anatomical structure is the key factor affecting g m, which is largely responsible for the difference in photosynthetic capacity between those two genera. Our findings provide new insight into the photosynthetic physiology and functional diversification of orchids.  相似文献

Leaf age-dependent changes in structure, nitrogen content, internal mesophyll diffusion conductance (gm), the capacity for photosynthetic electron transport (Jmax) and the maximum carboxylase activity of Rubisco (Vcmax) were investigated in mature non-senescent leaves of Laurus nobilis L., Olea europea L. and Quercus ilex L. to test the hypothesis that the relative significance of biochemical and diffusion limitations of photosynthesis changes with leaf age. The leaf life-span was up to 3 years in L. nobilis and O. europea and 6 years in Q. ilex. Increases in leaf age resulted in enhanced leaf dry mass per unit area (MA), larger leaf dry to fresh mass ratio, and lower nitrogen contents per dry mass (NM) in all species, and lower nitrogen contents per area (NA) in L. nobilis and Q. ilex. Older leaves had lower gm, Jmax and Vcmax. Due to the age-dependent increase in MA, mass-based gm, Jmax and Vcmax declined more strongly (7- to 10-fold) with age than area-based (5- to 7-fold) characteristics. Diffusion conductance was positively associated with foliage photosynthetic potentials. However, this correlation was curvilinear, leading to lower ratio of chloroplastic to internal CO2 concentration (Cc/Ci) and larger drawdown of CO2 from leaf internal air space to chloroplasts (ΔC) in older leaves with lower gm. Overall the age-dependent decreases in photosynthetic potentials were associated with decreases in NM and in the fraction of N in photosynthetic proteins, whereas decreases in gm were associated with increases in MA and the fraction of cell walls. These age-dependent modifications altered the functional scaling of foliage photosynthetic potentials with MA, NM, and NA. The species primarily differed in the rate of age-dependent modifications in foliage structural and functional characteristics, but also in the degree of age-dependent changes in various variables. Stomatal openness was weakly associated with leaf age, but due to species differences in stomatal openness, the distribution of total diffusion limitation between stomata and mesophyll varied among species. These data collectively demonstrate that in Mediterranean evergreens, structural limitations of photosynthesis strongly interact with biochemical limitations. Age-dependent changes in gm and photosynthetic capacities do not occur in a co-ordinated manner in these species such that mesophyll diffusion constraints curb photosynthesis more in older than in younger leaves.  相似文献

Ozone is an air pollutant that negatively affects photosynthesis in woody plants. Previous studies suggested that ozone-induced reduction in photosynthetic rates is mainly attributable to a decrease of maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax) and/or maximum electron transport rate (Jmax) estimated from response of net photosynthetic rate (A) to intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) (A/Ci curve) assuming that mesophyll conductance for CO2 diffusion (gm) is infinite. Although it is known that Ci-based Vcmax and Jmax are potentially influenced by gm, its contribution to ozone responses in Ci-based Vcmax and Jmax is still unclear. In the present study, therefore, we analysed photosynthetic processes including gm in leaves of Siebold’s beech (Fagus crenata) seedlings grown under three levels of ozone (charcoal-filtered air or ozone at 1.0- or 1.5-times ambient concentration) for two growing seasons in 2016–2017. Leaf gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were simultaneously measured in July and September of the second growing season. We determined the A, stomatal conductance to water vapor and gm, and analysed A/Ci curve and A/Cc curve (Cc: chloroplast CO2 concentration). We also determined the Rubisco and chlorophyll contents in leaves. In September, ozone significantly decreased Ci-based Vcmax. At the same time, ozone decreased gm, whereas there was no significant effect of ozone on Cc-based Vcmax or the contents of Rubisco and chlorophyll in leaves. These results suggest that ozone-induced reduction in Ci-based Vcmax is a result of the decrease in gm rather than in carboxylation capacity. The decrease in gm by elevated ozone was offset by an increase in Ci, and Cc did not differ depending on ozone treatment. Since Cc-based Vcmax was also similar, A was not changed by elevated ozone. We conclude that gm is an important factor for reduction in Ci-based Vcmax of Siebold’s beech under elevated ozone.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) represent major constraints to photosynthetic rate (A), and these traits are expected to coordinate with leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) across species, under both steady‐state and dynamic conditions. However, empirical information about their coordination is scarce. In this study, Kleaf, gas exchange, stomatal kinetics, and leaf anatomy in 10 species including ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms were investigated to elucidate the correlation of H2O and CO2 diffusion inside leaves under varying light conditions. Gas exchange, Kleaf, and anatomical traits varied widely across species. Under light‐saturated conditions, the A, gs, gm, and Kleaf were strongly correlated across species. However, the response patterns of A, gs, gm, and Kleaf to varying light intensities were highly species dependent. Moreover, stomatal opening upon light exposure of dark‐adapted leaves in the studied ferns and gymnosperms was generally faster than in the angiosperms; however, stomatal closing in light‐adapted leaves after darkening was faster in angiosperms. The present results show that there is a large variability in the coordination of leaf hydraulic and gas exchange parameters across terrestrial plant species, as well as in their responses to changing light.  相似文献

A key objective for sustainable agriculture and forestry is to breed plants with both high carbon gain and water-use efficiency (WUE). At the level of leaf physiology, this implies increasing net photosynthesis (A N) relative to stomatal conductance (g s). Here, we review evidence for CO2 diffusional constraints on photosynthesis and WUE. Analyzing past observations for an extensive pool of crop and wild plant species that vary widely in mesophyll conductance to CO2 (g m), g s, and foliage A N, it was shown that both g s and g m limit A N, although the relative importance of each of the two conductances depends on species and conditions. Based on Fick’s law of diffusion, intrinsic WUE (the ratio A N/g s) should correlate on the ratio g m/g s, and not g m itself. Such a correlation is indeed often observed in the data. However, since besides diffusion A N also depends on photosynthetic capacity (i.e., V c,max), this relationship is not always sustained. It was shown that only in a very few cases, genotype selection has resulted in simultaneous increases of both A N and WUE. In fact, such a response has never been observed in genetically modified plants specifically engineered for either reduced g s or enhanced g m. Although increasing g m alone would result in increasing photosynthesis, and potentially increasing WUE, in practice, higher WUE seems to be only achieved when there are no parallel changes in g s. We conclude that for simultaneous improvement of A N and WUE, genetic manipulation of g m should avoid parallel changes in g s, and we suggest that the appropriate trait for selection for enhanced WUE is increased g m/g s.  相似文献

We examined the responses of two tree fern species (Dicksonia antarctica and Cyathea australis) growing under moderate and high light regimes to short-term water deficit followed by rewatering. Under adequate water supply, morphological and photosynthetic characteristics differed between species. D. antarctica, although putatively the more shade and less drought adapted species, had greater chlorophyll a/b ratio, and greater water use efficiency and less negative δ13C. Both species were susceptible to water deficit regardless of the light regime showing significant decreases in photosynthetic parameters (A max, V cmax, J max) and stomatal conductance (g s ) in conjunction with decreased relative frond water content (RWC) and predawn frond water potential (Ψpredawn). During the water deficit period, decreases in g s in both species started one day later, and were at lower soil water content, under moderate light compared with high light. D. antarctica under moderate light was more vulnerable to drought than all other plants as was indicated by greater decreases in Ψpredawn, lowest stomatal conductance, and photosynthetic rates. Both tree fern species were able to recover after a short but severe water stress.  相似文献

We investigate the utility of an improved isotopic method to partition the net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (F) into net photosynthesis (FA) and nonfoliar respiration (FR). Measurements of F and the carbon isotopic content in air at a high‐elevation coniferous forest (the Niwot Ridge AmeriFlux site) were used to partition F into FA and FR. Isotopically partitioned fluxes were then compared with an independent flux partitioning method that estimated gross photosynthesis (GEE) and total ecosystem respiration (TER) based on statistical regressions of night‐time F and air temperature. We compared the estimates of FA and FR with expected canopy physiological relationships with light (photosynthetically active radiation) and air temperature. Estimates of FA and GEE were dependent on light as expected, and TER, but not FR, exhibited the expected dependence on temperature. Estimates of the isotopic disequilibrium D , or the difference between the isotopic signatures of net photosynthesis (δA, mean value ?24.6‰) and ecosystem respiration (δR, mean value ?25.1‰) were generally positive (δAR). The sign of D observed here is inconsistent with many other studies. The key parameters of the improved isotopic flux partitioning method presented here are ecosystem scale mesophyll conductance (gm) and maximal vegetative stomatal conductance (gcmax). The sensitivity analyses of FA, FR, and D to gcmax indicated a critical value of gcmax (0.15 mol m?2 s?1) above which estimates of FA and FR became larger in magnitude relative to GEE and TER. The value of D decreased with increasing values of gm and gcmax, but was still positive across all values of gm and gcmax. We conclude that the characterization of canopy‐scale mesophyll and stomatal conductances are important for further progress with the isotope partitioning method, and to confirm our anomalous isotopic disequilibrium findings.  相似文献

Information on the photosynthetic process and its limitations is essential in order to predict both the capacity of species to adapt to conditions associated with climate change and the likely changes in plant communities. Considering that high‐mountain species are especially sensitive, three species representative of subalpine forests of the Central Catalan Pyrenees: mountain pine (Pinus uncinata Mill.), birch (Betula pendula Roth) and rhododendron (Rhododendron ferrugineum L.) were studied under conditions associated with climate change, such as low precipitation, elevated atmospheric [CO2] and high solar irradiation incident at Earth's surface, in order to detect any photosynthetic limitations. Short‐term high [CO2] increased photosynthesis rates (A) and water use efficiency (WUE), especially in birch and mountain pine, whereas stomatal conductance (gs) was not altered in either species. Birch showed photosynthesis limitation through stomatal closure related to low rainfall, which induced photoinhibition and early foliar senescence. Rhododendron was especially affected by high irradiance, showing early photosynthetic saturation in low light, highest chlorophyll content, lowest gas exchange rates and least photoprotection. Mountain pine had the highest A, photosynthetic capacity (Amax) and light‐saturated rates of net CO2 assimilation (Asat), which were maintained under reduced precipitation. Furthermore, maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), thermal energy dissipation, PRI and SIPI radiometric index, and ascorbate content indicated improved photoprotection with respect to the other two species. However, maximum velocity of carboxylation of RuBisco (Vcmax) indicated that N availability would be the main photosynthetic limitation in this species.  相似文献

Mixed species plantations of Eucalyptus and N2-fixing species can be significantly more productive than monocultures. The aim of this study was to determine whether the improved growth resulted from increases in photosynthesis, light absorption and light-use efficiency, in addition to previously measured increases in leaf area, water-use efficiency and higher ratios of annual above-ground net primary production per unit of total annual below-ground carbon allocation in 1:1 mixtures near Cann River, Victoria, Australia. Light-saturated photosynthetic rate (A max), electron transport (J), stomatal conductance (g s) and foliar nitrogen concentrations were higher for Eucalyptus globulus trees growing in mixtures than those in monocultures. Similar increases in maximum rates of carboxylation (V cmax), Rubisco, chlorophyll, and phosphorus concentrations were not significant. In contrast, A max, V cmax and J did not vary between mixtures and monocultures for A. mearnsii, whose growth was negligible by age 15 years. Mixtures also absorbed 24 and 41% more light than E. globulus and A. mearnsii., respectively, and were 38 and 154% more light-use efficient in the mixtures compared to monocultures. The increased nutrient availability in mixtures appeared to increase productivity of E. globulus by increasing the photosynthetic capacity of the foliage, as well as the leaf area, light absorption and light-use efficiency of the canopy.  相似文献

Worldwide measurements of nearly 130 C3 species covering all major plant functional types are analysed in conjunction with model simulations to determine the effects of mesophyll conductance (gm) on photosynthetic parameters and their relationships estimated from A/Ci curves. We find that an assumption of infinite gm results in up to 75% underestimation for maximum carboxylation rate Vcmax, 60% for maximum electron transport rate Jmax, and 40% for triose phosphate utilization rate Tu. Vcmax is most sensitive, Jmax is less sensitive, and Tu has the least sensitivity to the variation of gm. Because of this asymmetrical effect of gm, the ratios of Jmax to Vcmax, Tu to Vcmax and Tu to Jmax are all overestimated. An infinite gm assumption also limits the freedom of variation of estimated parameters and artificially constrains parameter relationships to stronger shapes. These findings suggest the importance of quantifying gm for understanding in situ photosynthetic machinery functioning. We show that a nonzero resistance to CO2 movement in chloroplasts has small effects on estimated parameters. A non‐linear function with gm as input is developed to convert the parameters estimated under an assumption of infinite gm to proper values. This function will facilitate gm representation in global carbon cycle models.  相似文献

Shoots of the tropical latex-producing tree Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) grow according to a periodic pattern, producing four to five whorls of leaves per year. All leaves in the same whorl were considered to be in the same leaf-age class, in order to assess the evolution of photosynthesis with leaf age in three clones of rubber trees, in a plantation in eastern Thailand. Light-saturated CO2 assimilation rate (A max) decreased more with leaf age than did photosynthetic capacity (maximal rate of carboxylation, V cmax , and maximum rate of electron transport, J max), which was estimated by fitting a biochemical photosynthesis model to the CO2-response curves. Nitrogen-use efficiency (A max/Na, Na is nitrogen content per leaf area) decreased also with leaf age, whereas J max and V cmax did not correlate with N a. Although measurements were performed during the rainy season, the leaf gas exchange parameter that showed the best correlation with A max was stomatal conductance (g s). An asymptotic function was fitted to the A max-g s relationship, with R 2 = 0.85. A max, V cmax, J max and g s varied more among different whorls in the same clone than among different clones in the same whorl. We concluded that leaf whorl was an appropriate parameter to characterize leaves for the purpose of modelling canopy photosynthesis in field-grown rubber trees, and that stomatal conductance was the most important variable explaining changes in A max with leaf age in rubber trees.  相似文献
