Bierhorst , David W. (Cornell U., Ithaca, N. Y.) Symmetry in Equisetum. Amer. Jour. Bot. 46(3) : 170-179. Illus. 1959.—A total of 118 leaf whorls and corresponding nodes from a total of 9 species of Equisetum were studied in serial cross-section. The number of whorls having the same leaf number as the 2 adjacent ones was 67. The size of the arc measured in degrees of circumference occupied by each leaf, as well as its position relative to leaves of adjacent whorls were measured. The disposition of the internodal and trans-nodal vascular strands was determined for each of the nodes. The average per cent deviations from theoretical leaf size within whorls were: whorls not involved in change in leaf number, 3.9; those with fewer leaves than the one below, 9.5; those with more leaves than one above, 7.1; those with more leaves than one below, 9.4; those with different leaf number from the 2 adjacent ones, 12.5. In Equisetum, it is a general rule that (1) a leaf which falls directly above a leaf in the next whorl where the younger whorl possesses fewer leaves than the older one is usually the largest leaf within its whorl, (2) a leaf which falls directly below a leaf in the next younger whorl where the younger whorl possesses fewer leaves than the older one is usually the smallest leaf within its whorl, (3) a leaf which falls directly above a leaf in the next older whorl where the younger whorl possesses a greater number of leaves than the older one is usually the smallest leaf in its whorl, and (4) a leaf which falls directly below a leaf in the next younger whorl where the younger whorl possesses a greater number of leaves than the older one is usually the largest leaf within its whorl. The numerous variations in the disposition of vascular tissue associated with changes in leaf number are described. Double leaf traces which originate in various ways are common, as well as vertical strands traversing the nodes. The leaf trace system is considered to be determined by the number, position, and relative sizes of leaf primordia. The disposition of the trans-nodal protoxylem seems to be determined to a large extent by the proximity of the leaf traces above and below the node.  相似文献

Sensory analysis has traditionally played a prominent role in quality control for food products. More and more principles from sensory analysis are also applied in the area of food product development, bringing sensory analysis more closely into the domain of marketing. Unfortunately, in practice integration between sensory and marketing practices is far from optimal. Differences in basic orientations between sensory and marketing are a major source contributing to this defective cooperation.
Sensory analysis has traditionally been product oriented with an emphasis on internal validity of the test results. Implicitly or explicitly this approach emphasizes the relationships between sensory evaluation and characteristics of the product. Marketing, on the other hand, stresses the external validity of test results: the extent to which test results can be generalized to market behavior. Emphasis on external validity requires an approach to sensory analysis that is fundamentally different from current sensory practice in terms of type of respondents, type of stimuli, scaling procedures adopted and test circumstances.
Closer integration between the product and consumer oriented approach to sensory analysis may contribute to the success of product development in the food industry. The literature suggests several factors that may contribute to a more fruitful cooperation between the two approaches to sensory analysis. The company's senior management plays a central role in the achievement of this integration by providing an infrastructure (in terms of personnel, organizational structure and financial resources) that paves the way for closer cooperation.  相似文献

Relationships between measures of body size, asymmetry, courtship effort, and mating success were investigated in the housefly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae). A previous study indicated that both male and female flies with low fluctuating asymmetry enjoyed enhanced mating success. The aim of our investigations was to determine whether the greater success of symmetrical males is due to variation in male mating effort or to female choice and whether males exhibited mate choice. However, our study found directional rather than fluctuating asymmetry with both male and female flies having, on average, longer left wings than right. Also, asymmetry was not related to mating success in either sex. Rather, both males and females appeared to exhibit choice on the basis of the size of potential mates, with males preferring females with long bodies and females preferring heavy males. Possible benefits from choice of large mates are discussed. The initial mating strikes (in which the male leaps onto the back of the female) did not appear to be targeted according to female morphology, and their frequency did not vary according to male morphology. This indicates that mate choice by both sexes according to size probably occurs during the later stages of courtship, when the flies are in intimate contact. Possible reasons for the absence of choice according to asymmetry are discussed.  相似文献

Patterns of variation and covariation within populations can influence how characters respond to natural selection and random genetic drift and so constrain the ability of natural selection to modify the phenotype. We examined several potential developmental and functional explanations of character covariation throughout ontogeny using known-age samples of the cotton rat (Sigmodon fulviventer) to identify the causes of covariation and to assess the variability of patterns of covariation throughout postnatal growth. Competing developmental and functional models were fit to samples of orofacial and neurocranial measures by confirmatory factor analysis and evaluated for their ability to reconstruct observed variance-covariance matrices. Samples of successive ages were simultaneously fit to a common model to test the hypothesis that the patterns of developmental and functional integration were invariant between ages. Orofacial characters derived from the same branchial-arch primordium covary early in ontogeny. Subsequently, there is a repatterning of integration that may reflect a transition from developmental to functional sources of integration. Neurocranial characters exhibit even more variation in patterns of covariation: initially, characters appear to comprise a single integrated unit; before puberty, they appear to respond to localized bone growth; after puberty, they form separate calvarial and basicranial components. This ontogenetic variation in patterns of covariation suggests that developmental constraints are transient and flexible and that the consequences of selection may depend upon the age at which it acts.  相似文献

Two hypotheses predicting the ancestral or derived status of populations and based on asymmetrical mate discrimination (Kaneshiro, 1976; Watanabe and Kawanishi, 1979) were tested using nine laboratory populations of D. simulans, a highly outcrossed ancestral population, and eight populations derived from it via founder-flush-crash cycles. The data from individual mating tests using pairwise combinations of these populations fit the Kaneshiro hypothesis reasonably well, rejecting the Watanabe-Kawanishi hypothesis. However, more powerful tests rejected the Kaneshiro hypothesis for the data we analyzed. The values for derived females predicted by the Kaneshiro hypothesis were biased: they were consistently high for derived males and consistently low for ancestral males. We propose a hypothesis, based on variation in mating propensities and symmetrical mate discrimination. We assessed the power of Kaneshiro's and our hypotheses to predict the number of matings between derived females and derived males by plotting predicted vs. observed values and fitting these points to the expected line of unit slope passing through the origin. Predictions of our hypothesis explained more of the variance (r2 = 0.87) than predictions of the Kaneshiro model (r2 = 0.63). While asymmetrical sexual isolation undoubtedly occurs between some species, its existence cannot be determined simply by measuring mating frequencies in a single experiment.  相似文献

Discrete behavioral strategies comprise a suite of traits closely integrated in their expression with consistent natural selection for such coexpression leading to developmental and genetic integration of their components. However, behavioral traits are often also selected to respond rapidly to changing environments, which should both favor their context-dependent expression and inhibit evolution of genetic integration with other, less flexible traits. Here we use a multigeneration pedigree and long-term data on lifetime fitness to test whether behaviors comprising distinct dispersal strategies of western bluebirds—a species in which the propensity to disperse is functionally integrated with aggressive behavior—are genetically correlated. We further investigated whether selection favors flexibility in the expression of aggression in relation to current social context. We found a significant genetic correlation between aggression and dispersal that is concordant with consistent selection for coexpression of these behaviors. To a limited extent, individuals modified their aggression to match their mate; however, we found no fitness consequences on such adjustments. These results introduce a novel way of viewing behavioral strategies, where flexibility of behavior, while often aiding an organism's fit in its current environment, may be limited and thereby enable integration with less flexible traits.  相似文献

The herb Solidago altissima (Compositae) forms a gall when attacked by the fly Eurosta solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae). We performed an experiment to determine how histological features of gall morphology contribute to previously observed genetic variation in gall diameter. Galls induced on 10 replicated plant clones were sectioned, and their internal tissues and cells measured. Four concentric tissue zones were identified, including a cytoplasmically rich tissue lining the insect's central chamber, and a cytoplasmically poor cortex. As expected, outer gall diameter differed among clones, with a broad sense heritability of 0.29. However, clonal differences for component tissue thicknesses were found for only two of the zones; cortex thickness showed the greater genotypic variation, with a broad sense heritability of 0.30. Path analysis was used to examine the contribution of the zone thicknesses, vascular supply and cell sizes to outer gall diameter at the phenotypic, genotypic and environmental-developmental levels. These showed that cortex thickness was the single greatest determinant of gall size. At the phenotypic level, the single most important determinant of cortex thickness was the number of cortical cells, whereas the amount of cortical vascularization was second in importance. But, at the genotypic level of analysis, vascularization was the single most important determinant of genotypic differences in gall size. The larger the gall, the greater the protection to the inducing insect. Since the bulk of the gall consists of large, cytoplasmically poor cells, the insect gains protection while imposing a small cost on the plant.  相似文献

During mammalian evolution, fore- and hindlimbs underwent a fundamental reorganization in the transformation from the sprawled to the parasagittal condition. This caused a dissociation between serial and functional homologues. The mobilized scapula functions as the new proximal forelimb element and is functionally analogous to the femur of the hindlimb. Tarsus and metatarsus built a new functional hindlimb element that is functionally analogous to the forearm of the forelimb. Morphological covariation between serially homologous fore- and hindlimb elements can conflict with biomechanical demands when certain intralimb proportions are required for the postural stability of motion. The limb proportions of 189 mammalian species were examined to test whether intralimb proportions are governed by a general principle that corresponds to biomechanical predictions. Morphological covariation between functionally analogous and serially homologous fore- and hindlimb elements was tested by a correlation analysis. A clear relationship exists between the proportions of the first and the third elements of each limb, while the middle element is less involved in alterations of intralimb proportions. Hindlimb proportions are largely uniform across mammals and correspond to biomechanical predictions regarding postural stability. The greater variability in forelimb proportion is likely be the expression of various adaptations but might results also from constraints due to the shared developmental programs with the hindlimb.  相似文献

Natural selection should reduce phenotypic variation and increase integration of floral traits involved in placement of pollen grains on stigmas. In this study, we examine the role of pollinators and breeding system on the evolution of floral traits by comparing the patterns of floral phenotypic variances and covariances in 20 Ipomoea species that differ in their level of pollination specialization and pollinator dependence incorporating phylogenetic relatedness. Plants with specialized pollination (i.e., those pollinated by one functional group or by few morphospecies) displayed less phenotypic variation and greater floral integration than generalist plants. Self‐compatible species also displayed greater floral integration than self‐incompatible species. Floral traits involved in pollen placement and pick up showed less variation and greater integration than floral traits involved in pollinator attraction. Analytical models indicate that both breeding system and the number of morphospecies had significant effects on floral integration patterns although only differences in the former were significant after accounting for phylogeny. These results suggest that specialist/self‐compatible plants experience more consistent selection on floral traits than generalist/self‐incompatible plants. Furthermore, pollinators and breeding system promote integration of floral traits involved in pollen placement and pick up rather than integration of the whole flower.  相似文献

对称性是由均衡比例产生的匀称美。对称性和对称破缺在自然界和生命现象中普遍存在。20种氨基酸和终止码共有64个遗传密码子,组成一个6维的编码空间。遗传密码空间以对称轴将空间分成对称的两大部分:嘌呤空间和嘧啶空间。遗传密码子的简并以对称轴为参考轴,呈平行排列。高简并度氨基酸(6,4,3,简并度)和低筒并度氨基酸(1,2简并度)的简并子空间近似呈周期性的双方错方式排列。遗传密码的简并与4种核苷酸的二进制数字编码,具有密切的关系。经过分析,可得出遗传密码的连通性λλ简并法则:“除丝氨酸的密码子分成两个与对称轴平行的,分离的子空间之外,其余氨基酸和终止密码的密码子,都通过与空间对称轴平行的λλ平面或λ边简并,组成独立的,单一的连通子空间。”并对氨基酸密码子的惯用率与编码空间的对称关系,以及数字生物学的意义进行了分析和讨论。  相似文献

克隆植物相连片段(或分株)常常生长在不同的土壤养分斑块中。克隆整合使得生长在异质养分斑块中的克隆片段(或分株)产生局部和非局部反应,从而影响相连片段(或分株)的表型可塑性。为了揭示养分斑块对比度对活血丹(Glechoma longituba)克隆整合的影响,在一控制实验中,将活血丹克隆片断种植于4种不同对比度的环境中,即:无对比度(对照)、低对比度、中对比度和高对比度。活血丹在气体交换、水势、荧光、形态、生长与分配方面的克隆整合强度随养分斑块对比度的增强而表现出增强或减弱的变化趋势;养分斑块对比度越强,活血丹气体交换和荧光暗反应的整合强度越小,叶片水势整合强度越大。斑块对比度可改变部分性状的克隆整合方向;超过一定的对比阈值,整合强度随养分对比度的变化趋势会向着相反方向转变。克隆整合对生理特征的修饰幅度小于对生长特征的修饰幅度。这些结果指示:养分斑块对比度可通过修饰克隆整合格局(即强度和方向)而改变克隆植物的表型可塑性。  相似文献

We measured the pattern of export of 14C-assimilate from reproductive spikes and leaves subtending spikes in Plantago aristata and P. virginica. In P. arislata, little 14carbon was exported to any other reproductive metamer (leaf + associated spike) from the leaf subtending a flowering spike. In P. virginica a large amount was exported. Thus, like clonal species, rosette species can vary in patterns of carbon integration among the repeated morphological subunits comprising an individual. When considered in the context of other studies, these data suggest that comparisons of carbon integration in species differing in morphological complexity would be useful in trying to understand the evolution of patterns of carbon integration in plants.  相似文献

Geographically separated populations of the intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus are sharply differentiated at several enzyme-encoding gene loci. Two studies were performed to investigate the extent to which the gene pools of local populations are organized into harmoniously interacting (or “coadapted”) gene complexes. In the first, the effects of interpopulation hybridization on development time were assessed. Results showed that while F1 hybrids did not differ from parental lines, mean F2 developmental times were as much as 50% longer. The second study used two unlinked enzyme polymorphisms as genetic markers to determine the genotypic specificity of F2 hybrid breakdown. For two sets of parental populations, the relative viabilities of the different two-locus genotypes were determined from segregation ratios among the F2 progeny. Sharp deviations from Mendelian ratios were observed; in the extreme, a block of genes marked by the MeF allozyme from the LJ (La Jolla) population was found to be nearly lethal when homozygous in the F2 of LJ × AB (Los Angeles) crosses. This same block of genes had a tenfold higher viability in crosses between LJ and SC (Santa Cruz). In the AB × LJ crosses, the two marker loci had independent (multiplicative) effects on viability. In the SC × LJ crosses, deviations from the multiplicative model were observed; the data indicate that parental homozygous genotypes have higher viability than predicted by independence, while nonparental homozygotes have lower than predicted viability. These results suggest that substantial integration of the genome has occurred within natural T. californicus populations.  相似文献

Limnobium spongia produces upright vegetative axes and prostrate stolons. The upright axes bear new stolons, whereas the stolons bear new upright axes and fertile and sterile branching systems. Upright axes and fertile and sterile branching systems are all interpreted to have sympodial growth. However, it was not determined whether growth of stolons is monopodial or sympodial. Both stolons and upright axes branch in alternate plastochrons, and branching is achieved solely by the bifurcation of apical meristems. Each meristematic bifurcation is interpreted to represent the formation of a precocious lateral bud. The upright axes develop from presumed precocious lateral buds on stolons, whereas such buds on upright axes produce renewal shoots. Limnobium spongia exhibits a marked degree of mirror-image symmetry.  相似文献

Navicula mutica (Kütz.) var. mutica was isolated from the air, cloned on agar, cultured in soil-water bottle, and studied with transmission and scanning electron micros-ropy. The frustules were lanceolate to ovoid with rounded apices, with the apical axis 8.5 ± 3.2 μ and the trans-apical and the transapical axis 3.6 ± 0.6 μm. Striae were composed of two or three puncta, and the mantle bore a single row of puncta aligned with the striae. The ends of the raphe turned away from an isolated punctual in the central area of the valve. The mantle puncta and one or two of the valve-face puncta in each stria opened into a series of transapical grooves in the interior of the valve, the grooves contributing to the appearance of striae in the light microscope. The interior of the mantle also possessed a pair of longitudinal grooves, discontinuous at the apices of the valves. An undulate advalvar margin of the valvocopula likely articulates along the interior longitudinal groove of the mantle. The projections of the undulate margin are perhaps positioned between the transapical grooves and along the longitudinal groove between the dentiform structures formed by the intersection of the double-grooved system. The girdle bands each had two (occasionally three) rows of pores. The pleurae margins were straight and not undulate.  相似文献
