Patterns of morphological variation and reproductive isolation were examined for several North American populations of copepods in the Acanthocyclops vernalis Fischer A., 1853 (Copepoda, Cyclopinae) species complex. The copepods were collected from six sites in Wisconsin, U.S.A. Morphological analysis of 120 adult females revealed that a character used previously to distinguish species in this group was unreliable because of phenotypic plasticity. Most of the morphological variance was due to environment (Laboratory vs. field) and to field site. Relatively little of the variation was due to measurement error or asymmetry. Multivariate ordination analysis produced poorly-defined clusters of individuals, suggesting that different biological species are difficult or impossible to distinguish using a set of easily-measurable morphological characters. In our study, morphological similarity was independent of geographic distance among sites, between 0.05 and 300 km. Isofemale lines within sites showed little or no reproductive isolation, but nearly complete isolation among sites. Reproductive isolation was also independent of morphology. These results suggest that the Acanthocyclops population at each site could be considered a distinct cryptic biological species. These copepods expressed morphological stasis – persistence of morphological uniformity despite reproductive isolation. Because of the effect of site and environment on morphology, we recommend using much larger collections (many sites), common garden experiments, and a multi-disciplinary approach (morphological, reproductive, chromosomal, and molecular) as the basis for future taxonomic research on putative copepod species.  相似文献

Summary Saplings of three, co-occurring maple species in a mature maple-beech forest differed in a suite of structural and physiological characters that separated the canopy species, Acer, saccharum, from the two subcanopy species, A. pensylvanicum and A. spicatum. Acer saccharum had both more dense wood and tougher and heavier but thinner leaves than the subcanopy species. Acer pensylvanicum had the largest, lightest leaves with high stomatal density and its canopy architecture was the most effective in terms of leaf display for light interception. Acer spicatum had weaker wood similar to that of A. pensylvanicum but also small, soft and relatively poorly displayed leaves. Both subcanopy species maintained marginally higher average rates of photosynthesis over the growing season in the understory environment. We consider juvenile A. saccharum only shade-tolerant, capable of persisting through long periods in the closed canopy until a gap occurs but not specifically adapted to the understory environment. Juvenile A. sacchrum appears to be constrained functionally by the requirements set by the canopy environment that adults will occupy. Characters such as high wood density are already expressed in the understory sapling; this investment in denser wood slows the growth of saplings, but is necessary for structural reasons in the adult. Juvenile A. saccaharum have morphological and photosynthetic characters better suited to gas exchange and extension growth under the increased photon flux densities in large forest gaps, characteristics that will also be advantageous in the sunlit canopy environment of adults. Both subcanopy maples appear to be more truly shade-adapted, although in somewhat different ways. Acer pensylvanicum has characteristics that enhance the potential for capture and utilization of sunflecks and is able to sustain higher growth rates than A. saccharum in the shaded subcanopy environment. Acer spicatum shares some shade-adapted features with A. pensylvanicum, and its habit of lateral spread through stem layering may confer an additional advantage in foraging for small light gaps.  相似文献

The distribution of 17 Potamogeton species was examined at 430 sites in central North America with respect to water body type, bottom substrate and 8 water chemistry parameters (pH, total dissolved solids, total alkalinity, chloride, sulphate, phosphorus, combined nitrate and nitrite, and dissolved organic matter). All except 2 of the species showed statistically significant distributions with respect to some of the environmental parameters examined. Each species occupied a different combination of chemical parameter ranges. The species formed a distribution spectrum with respect to water chemistry, with P. epihydrus and P. obtusifolius frequenting low inorganic concentrations at one end of the scale, and P. filiformis, P. pectinatus and P. vaginatus at the other end, these species characterized by high mean inorganic values and occurring most often in saline or alkaline habitats. While 41 significant positive interspecific associations were found within the genus in lentic waters, only 4 were apparent in lotic habitats. Potamogeton species richness (PR) was related to water body and bottom type, with lakes and sand bottoms showing the highest mean PR values. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that, in the area as a whole, the water chemistry parameters examined accounted for <25% of the observed variability in PR. The relative importance of individual chemical parameters in relation to PR varied in different water body types.  相似文献

The structure of the pollen wall as revealed by transmission electron microscopy is presented for 29 speciesSenecio including 19 aureoid and ten non-aureoid species. The previous report of a helianthoid wall structure (exine with internal foramina) is confirmed for all the aureoid species examined while all of the non-aureoid taxa showed a senecioid pattern. The data provide support for the treatment of the aureoid complex as a distinct taxon.  相似文献

Twenty species of shrubbyOxalis species native in South America were arranged in six groups according to their karyotype similarities. The first group includes more than half of the species studied, all with 2n = 12 relatively small metacentric chromosomes. The rest of the species from the other groups has different basic chromosome numbers, and exhibits various degrees of chromosome asymmetry and size increase. These latter groups apparently have specialized to habitats with low light intensity such as the forest undergrowth in contrast to the frist group whose members live in open areas (i.e., grasslands, savannas etc.).  相似文献

Summary A gregarine parasite (Neogregarinida, Ophryocystidae) ofLeptothorax ants was found near West-Yellowstone, Montana, USA. Infested pupae are characterized by grey to black coloration, irregular pigmentation of compound eyes, and toothless mandibles. The pathogenic effects closely resemble those in the fire ant,Solenopsis geminata, when infested byMattesia geminata. Infested pupae die. The infection can be transmitted to healthy colonies and to differentLeptothorax species by feeding them with infested pupae.  相似文献

Tomicus species (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) are serious pests of pines with a wide distribution in Europe, Asia and America. In Yunnan, south-western China,T. piniperda has destroyed more than 0.5 million ha ofPinus yunnanensis in the past 15 years. A blue stain fungus belonging to the genusLeptographium is associated with both the shoot-feeding and trunk-attacking stages of the beetle's life cycle. The fungus is morphologically similar to the anamorph ofOphiostoma crassivaginatum and toL. pyrinum, which are both characterised by short robust conidiophores and hyphae covered by a granular layer. Both these species have been isolated from conifers and are associated with insects. After comparing the fungus fromT. piniperda with similarLeptographium species, using light and scanning electron microscopy, we concluded that it represents a new taxon, which is described here asL. yunnanense sp. nov.  相似文献

Twenty three species in 11 genera were examined in the field to determine hosts. OnlyStriga asiatica andSeymeria cassioides have a narrow host range being restricted to grasses and pines, respectively. These are the only species which cause pronounced and sometimes serious host damage. The other species attach to a great diversity of hosts.  相似文献

Plumatella nitens is a newly recognized species of phylactolaemate bryozoan in North America. It has previously been combined with either P. repens or P. fungosa, from which it differs primarily by the floatoblast. In P. nitens the ventral floatoblast annulus is uniformly narrow with no significant widening at the poles. The dorsal floatoblast fenestra is conspicuously larger than in either P. repens or P. fungosa. Reticulated ridges on the dorsal fenestra are weak along the margins, becoming unusually prominent in the center. The sessoblast is densely covered with uneven papillae. Spotty sampling so far shows a distribution only in the northern half of North America, including Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario, and the northern regions of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.  相似文献

Hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae Annand (Homoptera: Adelgidae), is native to Japan where it is an innocuous inhabitant of Tsuga diversifolia Masters and T. sieboldii Carriere throughout their natural growing areas. Native adelgid populations are regulated by host resistance and natural enemies, in particular the oribatid mite, Diapterobates humeralis (Hermann) and the coccinellid beetle, Pseudoscymnus tsugae Sasaji and McClure. Invading populations of A. tsugae in western North America on T. heterophylla Sargent and T. mertensiana Carriere are mainly regulated by host resistance. However, invading populations in eastern North America attain damaging levels on T. canadensis (L.) Carriere and T. caroliniana Engelmann and are regulated mainly by weather and negative density-dependent feedback mechanisms related to host deterioration. Although A. tsugae is only passively dispersed by wind, birds, forest-dwelling mammals and humans, it is spreading at an alarming rate and is sufficiently cold hardy to threaten the existence of the two eastern hemlock species throughout their natural ranges. The current hope for suppressing invading populations of hemlock woolly adelgid in eastern North America lies with the exotic predator, P. tsugae. Extensive laboratory studies of the biology and predatory ability of P. tsugae revealed that it feeds on all life stages of its prey, that its multivoltine life cycle is well synchronized with that of the adelgid, and that it has great potential for biological control. We have reared and released nearly 130,000 adults of P. tsugae in forests in Connecticut, New Jersey and Virginia during the past four years. P. tsugae has reproduced, dispersed, overwintered and reduced densities of hemlock woolly adelgid by 47–88% in only five months on release branches at these sites. Current studies are investigating the long-term ability of P. tsugae to regulate invading populations of A. tsugae in eastern North America.  相似文献

The introduced parasitoid,Aphytis melinusDeBach (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), is used for augmentative biological control of California red scale,Aonidiella aurantii(Maskell) (Homoptera: Diaspididae). Commercially reared wasps are reared on oleander scale,Aspidiotus neriiBouché (Homoptera: Diaspididae). Oleander scale covers lack the chemical,O-caffeoyltyrosine, a kairomone mediating host selection byA. melinus.Wasps reared on oleander scale but individually exposed, or primed, toO-caffeoyltyrosine more readily accepted California red scale for probing in laboratory bioassays and parasitized a greater proportion of available California red scale in the field than wasps reared similarly but not exposed toO-caffeoyltyrosine. Thus, it may be possible to improve host recognition of commercial, insectary-rearedA. melinusby exposing them toO-caffeoyltyrosine prior to release. The goal of this study was to develop an inexpensive but effective means of priming thousands of wasps simultaneously toO-caffeoyltyrosine. The most effective method, but potentially the most expensive, was simply to spray parasitized oleander scale on their host plant with diluteO-caffeoyltyrosine prior to wasp emergence. In additional experiments, using controlled doses of syntheticO-caffeoyltyrosine applied to scale covers, we showed that primed wasps require both a lower minimum dose ofO-caffeoyltyrosine for recognition and also respond to measuredO-caffeoyltyrosine doses more consistently than unprimed wasps. The ability to mass-prime thousands of wasps prior to release is a crucial step toward realizing the concept of behavioral improvement of host selection of parasitoids on a commercial scale.  相似文献

Trichoderma theobromicola and T. paucisporum spp. nov. are described. Trichoderma theobromicola was isolated as an endophyte from the trunk of a healthy cacao tree (Theobroma cacao, Malvaceae) in Amazonian Peru; it sporulates profusely on common mycological media. Trichoderma paucisporum is represented by two cultures that were obtained in Ecuador from cacao pods partially infected with frosty pod rot, Moniliophthora roreri; it sporulates sporadically and most cultures remain sterile on common media and autoclaved rice. It sporulates more reliably on synthetic low-nutrient agar (SNA) but produces few conidia. Trichoderma theobromicola was reintroduced into cacao seedlings through shoot inoculation and was recovered from stems but not from leaves, indicating that it is an endophytic species. Both produced a volatile/diffusable antibiotic that inhibited development of M. roreri in vitro and on-pod trials. Neither species demonstrated significant direct in vitro mycoparasitic activity against M. roreri.  相似文献
