Eighty-seven species of chironomid larvae were collected from streams in the Big Thicket area of southeast Texas. Samples of leaf debris, wood debris, and sand were taken from the streams and the larvae occupying the substrates were analyzed. Four subfamilies were represented including Tanypodinae (12 species), Diamesinae (2 species), Orthocladiinae (30 species), and Chironominae (43 species). Dominant species included Lopescladius sp., Polypedilum ? convictum, Polypedilum ? halterale, Cladotanytarsus sp. group A, Rheotanytarsus sp., and Tanytarsus sp. 2. A brief account of the habitat and the distribution of each species encountered during this study is given.  相似文献

Water quality of Menard Creek in the Big Thicket National Preserve of southeast Texas was studied from July 1978 to June, 1979 utilizing physicochemical parameters, bacteriological data, and benthic macroinvertebrates.Physicochemical conditions generally indicated good water quality. Dissolved oxygen concentrations were always high and all other parameters were within the expected ranges for small streams in this area. Conductivity and chlorides indicated low concentrations of oil field brines at Stations 4 and 5.Numbers of fecal bacteria were higher than acceptable at all stations during much of the study period. Highest numbers were generally found after heavy rains and surface runoff. Fecal coliform to fecal streptococci ratios indicated human contamination in 53 percent of the 60 samples, while non-human contamination was found in 12 percent of the samples.125 taxa and 7,462 individuals of benthic macroinvertebrates were collected. Chironomids (44.8%, 38 sp.) and oligochaetes (32.1%, 13 sp.) were the dominant groups. The oligochaete Aulodrilus pigueti and the trichopterans Lype diversa and Brachycentrus numerosus were reported in Texas for the first time. The greatest number of taxa was found at Station 1 (79), while Station 5 had the fewest (61). Station 1 had the highest annual species diversity ({xxd}) of 4.37. The other stations had intermediate to high values indicating moderately stressed conditions during high discharge. Population dynamics of chironomid larvae in the littoral zone of Lake Maarsseveen I were investigated to a depth of 6 m. No essential differences in the composition and density between various sampling stations in the shallow sand flats were found. Two species,Cladotanytarsus mancus andStictochironomus sticticus, were found to be the main components of the chironomid population to a depth of 4 m. The density ofCladotanytarsus, which occurred predominantly to a depth of 1 m, increased from June to a maximum in December. In May and June, the entireCladotanytarsus population emerged.Stictochironomus had its peak of abundance in June. From this cohort, a part, differing in size for each of the various years, emerged in August. The remainder of this population, together with the offspring of the August adults, emerged in May. The size of the August midges, and the number of its eggs was smaller than that of the May midges. At depths greater than 4 m,Tanytarsus bathophillus was found to be the dominant chironomid.In summer the abundance of the small (second and third instars)Stictochironomus was primarily affected by water mite predation. In autumn and winter,Cladotanytarsus was the main food source for water mites. In autumn, whenStictochironomus larvae have molted into the fourth instar, predation by bream decreased the density of these larvae. In winter, the impact of this fish is negligible.  相似文献

Interannual population oscillations ofMonoporeia affinis and sedentary chironomids are negatively correlated in Lake Mälaren. Sedentary chironomid abundance regressed againstM. affinis density was highly significant at a lag response of one year (adj. R2=0.54, P=0.0001). The inverse correlation between Tanytarsini (Micropsectra sp. andTanytarsus sp.) andM. affinis densities supports a recruitment limitation hypothesis,viz. that the growth or survival of early instar chironomids is low at high amphipod densities. Microcosm studies showed density-dependent effects on the growth and survival of second instarCh. riparius larvae across an amphipod density gradient. No significant effects were found on growth or survival of third instars. These findings support the chironomid recruitment limitation hypothesis. Amphipod predation on early instar chironomid larvae is suggested as a population controlling mechanism.  相似文献

Long-term changes in distribution and taxonomic composition of chironomid larvae and oligochaetes in two water storage reservoirs in The Netherlands were studied. A succession among the chironomid species was observed. In the last 10–15 years chironomid densities varied. Compared with other lakes chironomid densities were high. Densities of chironomids were higher in the littoral zone than in the profundal zone. The opposite was found for oligochaetes. Densities and composition of the chironomid fauna in the two reservoirs were similar.Procladius, Tanytarsus andHarnischia dominated at all depths. However, pupal exuviae samples showed some differences in chironomid taxonomic composition between the two reservoirs. Orthocladiinae, rarely found in bottom samples, abounded in pupal exuviae samples.  相似文献

Chironomid larvae and adults were collected from rock pool and intertidal sites between 1990 and 1994 on the exposed Atlantic coast and in more sheltered bays near St. John's. From several thousand specimens collected, 16 chironomid taxa were identified. Two were from intertidal habitats and the remainder occurred in rock pools. In intertidal habitats Halocladius variabilis was abundant in summer among clumps of fine filamentous algae, e.g. Pilayella littoralis. The previous Nearctic records of this chironomid were from Hudson Bay and Greenland although it is widespread in northern Europe. The other intertidal species, Telmatogeton japonicas, was recorded from one site, a rock outcrop on a beach in the mouth of a small stream. This Holarctic species has not been reported previously north of New York on the Atlantic coast. The rock-pool communities were dominated by Psectotanypus dyari, Cricotopus sylvestris, Psectocladius sordidellus gp, Orthocladius dubitatus, Chironomus riparius, and Tanytarsus sp. These taxa are known to tolerate sites with elevated salinity and/or conductivity and thus are present in polluted sites inland. The other eight chironomid species were rare and most were found at only one site. An exception was the Metriocnemus sp. collected in very low numbers at three sites and also collected previously during a survey of rock pools for larval mosquitoes in the same area. The current study shows that a diverse coastal chironomid community is present in the cold ocean habitats of eastern Newfoundland. The community is made up of both arctic and temperate faunal elements with widespread distributions not confined to coastal habitats. Ranges of temperature, salinity, conductivity and pH for the common species occurring in the rock pools are provided. The results suggest that coastal rock pool habitats could be a natural laboratory for studies on the evolutionary ecology of pollution tolerance in chironomids.  相似文献

  • 2 In the laboratory, Psectrodadius sp. reduced the biovolume of algal species preferred as food and increased the degree of clumping of non-preferred species. Thienemanniella cf. fusca had both positive and negative effects (depending on the algal species) on the biovolumes of algal species preferred as food and increased the degree of clumping of non-preferred species.
  • 3 In field exclosures, no effect of removal of chironomid larvae from the grazer assemblage could be detected in autumn or winter experiments. A third, longer removal experiment, conducted in summer, resulted in increased biovolumes of edible Cosmarium spp. and Aphanocapsa spp., preferred foods of chironomid larvae. Biovolumes of Lyngbya sp., Eulbochaete spp. and Oedogortium spp., filamentous taxa used extensively in larval case construction, also increased. Chironomid larvae had no effect on total algal biovolume or biovolume of large unicellular algae.

Summary Bottom invertebrate communities were compared along the western shoreline of a large oligotrophic lake (Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho). A technique of community ordination was used for the comparisons. Ordination indicated that differences among stations were associated with local differences in bottom type. The bottom type was apparently influenced by isolation from lake currents, nutrient additions, and increased amounts of fine sediments and organic matter. The amount of silt+clay was the most important sediment factor affecting the invertebrate communities. Most communities were dominated by a small species of larval chironomid, Tanytarsus.  相似文献

Results of the first long-term investigation of the profundal chironomid fauna of Starnberger See, a prealpine lake are reported. Data are presented on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the chironomid fauna in the profundal of Starnberger See, on the spatial variation, and on the phenology of the dominant species, based on pupal occurrence and the seasonal distribution of larval instars. Twenty-five distinct chironomid taxa could be recorded in the profundal zone. Typical inhabitants of the profundal zone of Starnberger See are the larvae of the genus Micropsectra. The maximum abundance of Micropsectra larvae were found at 60 m with 5644 Ind.m−2. Abundance, distribution and phenology of the dominant chironomid species are discussed in comparison with other lakes.  相似文献

Three chironomid midge (Diptera: Chironomidae) species (Cricotopus sylvestris (Fabricius); Psectrocladius limbatellus (Holmgren), Tanytarsus fimbriatus Reiss and Fittkau) live at high densities and dominate the midge assemblage found in slow sand filter beds. After filter beds are drained and cleaned, the substratum consists of sand of different particle sizes, but once beds are refilled and in operation, organic material accumulates on the sand and Cladophora grows. In laboratory experiments, we found that larvae of the three midge species preferred different substratum types: C. sylvestris preferred sand to both Cladophora and organic material, P. limbatellus preferred Cladophora, and Tanytarsus sp. preferred organic material. Some evidence of preference for one particle size was also found, but compared with substratum types, this was neither as marked or contrasting between the three species. The contrasting preferences that we found in the laboratory suggest that the substratum will influence the microdistribution of the three species in filter beds, and provide further evidence of the importance of substratum in midge assemblages.  相似文献

The composition and dynamics of the numerical density of meroplankton in the Bays and Seaports of the Northeastern Black Sea, viz., Novorossiysk, Tuapse, Gelendzhik, and Anapa were studied in the long-term aspect. The larvae of the benthic invertebrates of 73 taxa were identified. Meroplankton had their peak abundance period from May to September. Larvae of mollusca Mytilus galloprovincialis and Cardiidae gen sp. (Bivalvia) were dominant in the spring; larvae of mollusca Bittium reticulatum (Gastropoda), Mytilaster lineatus were dominant in the summer, and M. galloprovincialis, Anadara cf. inaequivalvis, Chamelea gallina (Bivalvia) were dominant in the autumn. Polychaete and cirriped larvae occurred in the plankton during the spring-autumn season. Complex species that are tolerant to pollution, such as Amphibalanus improvisus, M. lineatus, B. reticulatum, and the genus Polydora were abundant in Novorossiysk and the Tuapse.  相似文献

1. Biofilm development and activity on wood substrata (Nothofagus menziesii) were examined at four forested sites in a South Island, New Zealand, river catchment over a period of 6 months. Two of the sites had brown waters and mean pH of 3.7 and 4.5, whereas the other two had clear waters and mean pH of 6.3 and 6.8. 2. Fungi and other filamentous heterotrophs were the dominant colonizers of wood at all sites; few algal cells were present. Incorporation of 14C-glucose by biofilms was greatest in all four streams after 3 months, whereas endocellulase activity fluctuated over time and temporal patterns differed among streams. 3. No clear relationship was found between the incorporation of 14C-glucose or endocellulase activity of biofilms and pH, although at one near-neutral pH site 14C-glucose uptake increased in response to nutrient (N + P) additions. 4. After 6 months, incorporation of 14C-glucose and endocellulase activity of biofilms on Pinus radiata dowels buried vertically in the stream beds did not differ at depths of 3–9 cm and 19–25 cm in each stream. 5. Radiotracer experiments with a grazing amphipod (Paraleptamphopus sp.) demonstrated that biofilms on wood from all four sites could be ingested and at least partially assimilated. Chironomid larvae and harpacricoid copepods were the most abundant invertebrates colonizing wood substrata at all sites. Different chironomid species dominated at acidic and near-neutral pH sites. 6. Overall, our findings provide little support for the hypothesis that microbial activity on organic substrata is necessarily lower in streams of low pH.  相似文献

We studied the seasonal variation in abundance and distribution of shorebirds and chironomid Chironomus salinarius larvae in both traditional and industrial salines in the Odiel marshes, south-west Spain, in 2001. We selected 12 ponds that were representative of the different phases of the salt production process. The benthic chironomids were sampled in each pond every 2 months, and the birds were counted weekly. Chironomid larvae were most abundant in spring and autumn, and in the ponds of lower salinity. The density of larvae averaged 7023 ± 392 m−2 (±SE) over the six sampling events. Shorebirds were always more abundant at high tide than at low tide, and were especially abundant during the spring and autumn migration periods when up to 20,775 birds were counted. A total of 24 species were recorded, six of which were present in internationally important numbers. The salines were especially important as foraging and roosting habitat during migration. The percentage of birds that were feeding in the ponds was positively correlated with the abundance of chironomid larvae at accessible depths. The number of feeding birds was also higher in ponds with more chironomid larvae available. Despite more intensive management, industrial salines held higher densities of birds and a similar abundance of chironomids when compared with traditional salines.  相似文献

The relationship between myxomycete species and the decay stage of wood of Pinus densiflora coarse woody debris was investigated in warm temperate secondary forests of western Japan. The number of species and species diversity of the myxomycete community reached the maximum on moderately decayed wood. The 25 dominant species recorded from 8 or more samples of the total 1530 samples were arranged in order of the succession index corresponding to the stage of decay. Species on slightly decayed hard pine wood were characterized by Stemonitis splendens, Enerthenema papillatum, and Physarum viride, whereas species of Cribrariaceae were found on brittle decayed soft wood increasing abundance according to the decay stages. Most of the species occurred where there was sufficient moisture preserved in the environment of the decaying wood, although S. splendens specifically emerged in low-moisture environments. Because the myxomycete species had preference to different decay stages of wood, it appears that they change sequentially during myxomycete community succession on dead pine wood according to the progression of decay.  相似文献

Extensive collections of Chironomidae were made in Costa Rica, Central America, during 1986 and 1987. Fifty-five genera and at least 148 species belonging to the subfamilies Podonominae, Tanypodinae, Orthocladiinae and Chironomidae were found. Chironominae and Orthocladiinae predominated. Only one species of Podonominae was collected. Tanypodinae was represented by many genera, but species richness was low.Cricotopus was the most widespread and diverse genus of Orthocladiinae. Among the Chironominae the generaPolypedilum, Pseudochironomus, Tanytarsus andRheotanytarsus showed high species richness. Several species were collected that could not be assigned to genus. A number of range extensions were recorded for taxa found in the Neotropical region for the first time and for Neotropical taxa recorded outside of South America for the first time. The Costa Rican chironomid fauna consists of cosmopolitan, holarctic and neotropical components. There is probably an endemic Central American chironomid fauna at the species level.  相似文献

Chironomid pupal exuviae were collected over an eight-week period from a delta-swamp which receives thermal effluent from a nuclear reactor on the Savannah River Plant, South Carolina, USA. Two sites were sampled using box-type emergence traps. Site 1 was directly in a major thermal plume channel, and site 2 was outside the plume in a stand of stressed bald cypress trees. Sixteen chironomid taxa were collected, of these, species of Chironomus (42%) and Tanytarsus (35%) dominated the warmer site (site 1, maximum temperature 46 °C), whereas Tanypus neopunctipennis comprised > 84 % at site 2 (maximum temperature 43 °C). Emergence substantially increased at both sites after the reactor was shut down and water temperatures returned to ambient (27–28 °C). Tanytarsus sp. 1 and T. neopunctipennis were capable of successfully emerging during water temperature periods of 40–46 °C. The deep organic sediment, characteristic of the delta-swamp apparently served as a refugium for these and other species of midges during high temperature periods. It is suggested that the ability of some taxa to tolerate these elevated temperatures may be a combination of several factors: behavioral and ecological adaptations to utilize available refugia; and physiological adaptations to withstand higher temperatures and low dissolved oxygen concentrations.  相似文献

A population of the lepidostomatid caddisfly, Lasiocephala basalis, was studied in a third order stream, the Ohe, in Hesse, Germany. L. basalis showed an intimate association with wood debris in all of its aquatic life stages. Larvae exhibited a significant preference for organic substrates such as woody debris, leaves, and submerged alder roots. Gut content analysis revealed leaf material and wood fragments as the dominant larval food items classifying larvae as facultative xylophagous. Larval dominance on wood during spring corresponded to minimal leaf litter abundance. In winter, during periods of high discharge, the most important larval habitat was the submerged alder roots at the stream margin, thus acting as flow refugia. Most pupal cases were attached to submerged logs and roots. In addition, most of the egg masses were found on these two substrates. The role of L. basalis larvae in wood degradation is discussed.  相似文献

Well-preserved petrified woods from the Maastrichtian of Big Bend National Park, Texas, with a combination of characters seen in the Malvales are described as Javelinoxylon multiporosum gen. et sp. nov. One log is over 70 cm in diameter and is riddled with termite galleries; this specimen provides additional documentation for the occurrence of dicotyledonous trees in the Late Cretaceous. These woods have structure different from any other known Cretaceous dicotyledonous wood and are advanced in the Baileyan sense as vessel elements are relatively short, perforations are exclusively simple, vessels are commonly in long radial multiples, and rays are storied. This is the earliest record for woods with storied structure. The occurrence of large dicotyledonous trees with advanced wood structure in Big Bend suggests there were differences between the Late Cretaceous vegetation of the northern Rocky Mountains and the Big Bend region.  相似文献

Temporal changes in larval fish species composition and abundance compared with other components of the seston are described in four estuarine habitats in the Atrato Delta, Colombia. In comparison with zooplankton, fish larvae and egg density and anthropogenic debris abundance were low in the South Atrato Delta. Transparency, water temperature and chlorophyll a were the major factors influencing the spatiotemporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the delta. The most abundant fish larvae were Astyanax sp. 1, Anchovia clupeoides, Cetengraulis edentulus, Anchoa sp., Bathygbius curacao, Dormitator maculatus, Hyporhamphus sp., Atherinella blackburni, Gobiosoma sp. 1 and Menticirrhus americanus (92·8% of total abundance). Spatial temporal analysis shows that in this delta, shrub (arracachal) and grass (eneal) habitats are important for freshwater and estuarine species, whilst mudflat and mangrove are important for estuarine species and estuarine–marine species, since most flexion and post‐flexion stages of these species were found there. Anthropogenic debris density never surpassed the total ichthyoplankton density, but was ubiquitous. Shrub and mangrove habitats had higher densities of anthropogenic debris, since these are flood‐stem habitats that trap solids.  相似文献

Abstract

Two chironomid flies, Ziadeus kamili n. gen., n. sp. and Paicheleria magnifica n. gen., n. sp., respectively attributed to the recent subfamilies Tanypodinae and Prodiamesinae, are described from the Early Cretaceous Lebanese amber. Although very old, this non-biting midge fauna was very diverse with no less than 11 genera and species. However, it was also strongly different from the recent faunas for the complete absence of the Chironominae, that is today the dominant subfamily. The development of the modern chironomid fauna occurred during the Late Cretaceous and/or the Early Paleogene, but when and how?  相似文献
