The locomotor activity (LA) and the level of the protein-bound iodine (PBI) in the blood serum were investigated in 62 puppies at the age of 1--12 months. A parallel elevation of PBI and the LA was observed the first 4 months after birth. The second peak of the LA at the age of 7--9 months was not accompanied by any PBI rise. Inhibition of the thyroid function with mercasolyl increased the LA at the age of 1--3 months and decreased it at the age of 7 months. An increase of the LA one month after thyroidectomy was found at the age of 1 and 3.5 months. The activity of puppies operated on at the age of one month showed a sharp fall after 2--4 months. The data on various effect of thyroid hormones on puppies of different age pointed to the complex relation between the LA and the thyroid gland function.  相似文献

Background

Arrhythmias resulting in cardiac arrest during electroconvulsive therapy have been reported. Most reported cases of cardiac arrest had asystole as the initial rhythm. Pulseless electrical activity as an initial rhythm of cardiac arrest during electroconvulsive therapy has never been reported. Also, thromboembolism after inflation of pneumatic tourniquet during lower limb surgery has been reported but never following tourniquet inflation during an electroconvulsive therapy.

Case presentation

We report a case involving an 81- year- old female who presented to us for an electroconvulsive therapy for severe depression and developed pulseless electrical activity immediately after electroconvulsive therapy. She was successfully resuscitated and was later found to have bilateral pulmonary emboli with a complete occlusion of the right lower lobe pulmonary artery. The source of embolus was from her left lower extremity deep venous thrombus, which we believe, got dislodged intraoperatively after inflation of pneumatic tourniquet. Our patient not only survived the massive pulmonary embolus, but also showed significant improvement in her mental status compared to her pre-admission level at the time of discharge to a sub-acute rehabilitation centre.

Conclusion

We recommend that patients who are elderly and at high risk of thromboembolism should selectively undergo a preoperative doppler ultrasound for deep venous thrombosis. Also, selective application of tourniquet in the upper limb, to monitor for seizure activity, would reduce the incidence of pulmonary thrombo-embolism as embolic events are significantly less from deep venous thromboses of upper extremities when compared to lower extremities.  相似文献

A dog presented with cutaneous nodules, enlarged lymph nodes and oedema in limbs, face and abdomen. The diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis was established by identification of Leishmania amastigotes within macrophages from skin and popliteal lymph node biopsies. At necropsy, lesions were found in different organs, but it was particularly striking to observe large areas of pallor in the myocardium. Histological examination revealed an intense chronic inflammatory reaction in many organs, and numerous macrophages were found to contain amastigote forms of Leishmania. The inflammatory reaction was especially severe in the heart, where large areas of the myocardium appeared infiltrated with huge numbers of mononuclear immune cells, causing cardiac muscle atrophy and degeneration. Despite the severe inflammation, the number of parasitized macrophages was low in the myocardium, as revealed by immunohistochemical staining of Leishmania amastigotes. Because cardiac involvement is not usually described in this condition, this dog represents a very rare case of canine visceral leishmaniasis with affection of the myocardium.  相似文献

Retrograde ejaculation and hypothyroidism were diagnosed in a 19-mo-old Labrador retriever. The retrograde ejaculation was reversed following the administration of the sympathomimetic agent, pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, at a dose of 4 mg/kg per os given 1 and 3 h before semen collection. Antegrade ejaculation failed to occur after normalization of serum thyroid hormone levels by thyroxine supplementation. The pathophysiology of retrograde ejaculation is reviewed.  相似文献

Background

Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare neurologic complication of chronic alcohol consumption that is characterized by callosal lesions involving demyelination and necrosis. Various reversible neurologic symptoms are found in patients with MBD. Dysarthria and dysphagia are found in various neurological diseases.

Case presentation

We report a 51-year-old man with chronic alcoholism and malnutrition who progressively developed dysarthria and dysphagia. On admission, the patient was alert with mild cognitive dysfunction. The facial expression was flat, and there was weakness of the orbicularis oris bilaterally. The patient’s speech was slurred, there was difficulty swallowing, and the gag reflex and palate elevation were poor. The jaw jerk reflex was brisk and the snout reflex was positive. Neither tongue atrophy nor fasciculation were found. Bilateral upper and lower limb weakness with increased bilateral upper limb reflexes and Babinski reflexes were found. Because he had progressive dysarthria and dysphagia with upper and lower motor neuron signs, the initial diagnosis was motor neuron disease. However, electrophysiological analysis was normal. The vitamin B1 level was 14 ng/mL (normal: >24 ng/mL), and MRI revealed hyperintense lesions in the splenium of the corpus callosum and the primary motor cortices bilaterally. After vitamin B therapy for 17 days, the neurological disorders alleviated concurrently with disappearance of the lesions on MRI, which led to the definitive diagnosis of MBD.

Conclusions

MBD presenting with these lesions can mimic motor neuron disease clinically.

We present an unusual transient pro-arrhythmic effect of ajmaline in a patient with resuscitated cardiac arrest and a left ventricular apical aneurysm. We discuss the clinical presentation and the possible physio-pathological explanation for this new pro-arrhythmic effect linked to administration of intravenous ajmaline.  相似文献

Non-avian attacks of the worldwide distributed mite Dermanyssus gallinae are occasionally reported. However, it is widely accepted that their occurrence is underestimated. The present study aims to describe the first Italian case of dermanyssosis in a dog, to molecularly characterize the mites collected from the patient and the animal enclosure, where poultry and dog were confined, and to review the current literature on the non-avian attacks by D. gallinae. The dog was successfully treated with an oral sarolaner-based product, followed by a spot-on formulation of imidacloprid and moxidectin. The infestation source was likely attributable to poultry and confirmed by molecular identification of D. gallinae sensu strictu.Ten articles on non-avian D. gallinae attacks in domestic animals and wildlife were retrieved, pointing out the need for more awareness amongst practitioners. The therapeutic effect of available antiparasitic drugs, currently used off-label, should also be better explored in non-avian hosts.  相似文献

1. Recordings were made of the natural dischages of neurones in the supplementary motor area (SMA) of conscious monkeys trained to perform a stereotyped motor task with either hand. 2. Eighty % of the total population of cells showed modulation of their activity during particular movements of either limb. Two thirds of this group had a similar pattern of modulation regardless of whether the contralateral or ipsilateral hand was used. 3. The number of cells whose activity was related to movements of distal joints was approximately equal to that whose discharges occurred with proximal movements. 4. Only 5% of cells tested sent their axons into the pyramidal tract, and only 15% of units investigated showed responses to passive manipulation of the limbs. The effective afferent input usually was of a rather complex kind. 5. The findings suggest that the discharges of a large number of neurones in SMA are changing during particular movements of either arm, and that only a small number of cells receive afferent sensory input. These results contrast with those obtained in the primary motor area and suggest a different role for SMA the control of movement.  相似文献

By the method of spectral-coherent analysis, the intercentral relations were studied of the electrical activity of the sensorimotor and premotor cortices and of CAs field of the dorsal hippocampus of both hemispheres during the motor polarization dominant, created by the action of the direct current on the rabbits sensorimotor cortical area. The formation was shown of a new structure of the intercentral relations of electrical activity of the sensorimotor cortex and CA3 of the dorsal hippocampus. It should be noted that the dominant optimum and its inhibition are characterized by different interhippocampal relations: at the optimum a low range of the theta-rhythm is highly coherent while at the activation of "the non-dominant" hemisphere--a high range.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Cyclophosphamide (CPA) is an alkylating agent widely used as an immunosuppressive agent in the treatment of several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus. Its teratogenic effect has been well studied in different experimental mammalian and non-mammalian animal models. In humans, 11 cases of CPA teratogenesis have been documented. CASE: We present a case of a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome inadvertently exposed to CPA and prednisone in utero during the first trimester. CONCLUSIONS This case of possible cyclophosphamide embryopathy provides evidence of teratogenesis as an etiologic agent in developmental field defects such as Klippel-Feil syndrome.  相似文献

A 3-yr-old female mongrel dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University in the Republic of Korea. An adult heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, was found in the abdominal cavity of the dog during spaying. Dirofilariasis in this dog was also diagnosed by modified Knott's test, ELISA test, and PCR analysis. The present case is the first report on the migration of an adult dog heartworm to the abdominal cavity of a dog in the Republic of Korea.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Mast cell tumor, one of the most common skin tumors in dogs, may also be found in visceral sites (mainly spleen and liver). When a visceral mast cell tumor is present, neoplastic mast cells may be found in any effusion secondary to the tumor. Therefore, the diagnosis may be made by cytologic analysis of the effusion. CASE: An 8-year-old, spayed, female Siberian husky presented with a peritoneal effusion secondary to a visceral mast cell tumor. Seven months earlier, the dog had presented with a cutaneous nodule diagnosed as a well-differentiated mast cell tumor. The peritoneal fluid was classified as a transudate. Numerous neoplastic mast cells were found in the effusion. Although the mast cell tumor presented with characteristics of the well-differentiated tumor, its biologic behavior was that of a malignant tumor. CONCLUSION: Care should be taken to evaluate the prognosis of mast cell tumors in dogs since their biologic behavior is extremely variable.  相似文献
