Management of the postpartum period is one of the most important factors of stud farm medicine. In horses, owing to the long gestation period, the time from parturition to repeat conception needs be short to maintain an optimal yearly foaling interval. For this reason the features of postpartum ovarian activity and sexual behavior were studied under farm conditions. During 2 consecutive breeding seasons, 107 mares on 5 commercial horse farms were monitored after parturition by regular teasing, transrectal ultrasonography and blood sampling for progesterone. Foalings took place from January 1 to June 15. Body condition scoring was carried out within 5 d and at 60 to 65 d after parturition. The first ovulation occurred within 20 d after foaling in 84.1% (90/107) of the mares. The mean intervals from foaling to the first and second ovulations were 17.8 +/- 1.6 d (+/- SEM) and 40.9 +/- 2.7 d (+/- SEM), respectively. The mean intervals from parturition to the first and second ovulation (P < 0.001), the interovulatory interval (P < 0.01), the second follicular phase (P < 0.001), and the time until the first overt estrus (P < 0.01) were significantly longer in mares foaling before the vernal equinox. In the beginning of the breeding season the intervals from parturition to the first ovulation (P < 0.01), to the second ovulation (P < 0.01), and to the first overt estrus (P < 0.001) were significantly longer for primiparous mares than for multiparous animals. There was a tendency for an increased interovulatory interval and for a longer second follicular phase in mares with decreased body condition after parturition (P = 0.069, P = 0.089, respectively). Suckling and breed had no effect on postpartum ovarian activity. We concluded that under field conditions the resumption of cyclic ovarian activity and sexual behavior in mares after foaling are strongly affected by the season of parturition and parity. In some cases, body condition change and other factors may also play a role in influencing postpartum reproductive function.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of intravaginal progesterone on the reproductive performance of transitional Thoroughbred mares on commercial stud farms. Two hundred twenty-seven (227) non-lactating transitional Thoroughbred mares aged between 4 and 18 y (mean 9.4 ± 3.2 y) located on three stud farms in the Waikato region of New Zealand were used in the study performed during four consecutive breeding seasons (2007-10). Mares were age-matched in pairs and either treated with an intravaginal progesterone releasing device (Cue-Mare, 1.72 g progesterone, 10% w/w) for up to 10 d (Treated; n = 126) or left untreated (Control; n = 101). In both groups, 1,667 iu of hCG was given IV when an ovarian follicle ≥35 mm was detected (in conjunction with estrous behavior) and each mare was bred by natural service. Treated mares were served earlier in the breeding season (mean ± SD interval to first service was 13.9 ± 3.0 vs 26.7 ± 13.2 d for Treated and Control groups, respectively; P < 0.001). In the Treated and Control groups, 95.2 and 42.6% of mares were served within the first 21 d of the season (P < 0.001). Treated mares conceived earlier in the breeding season (mean number of days to conception 37.5 ± 14.2 vs 50.8 ± 21.3 d, P = 0.01). There was no difference between groups in the first service pregnancy rates (53.9 and 50.5% for Treated and Control mares, P = 0.89). Treatment with an intravaginal device increased the number of mares conceiving by the end of the breeding season (91.3 vs 82.3% for Treated and Control groups, P = 0.04). Therefore, this treatment protocol appeared to offer a convenient, economical and reliable method for managing transitional mares on commercial Thoroughbred stud farms.  相似文献

This study was conducted on 32 mares during the first 30 d of the postpartum period to characterize the first estrous cycle, assessing ovarian cyclicity by determining plasma progesterone concentration and by transrectal palpation. The total pregnancy rate of the breeding season was 81.25%. The present results show that the incidence of estrus occurring at the beginning of the breeding season were early, long and anovulatory. The mares that did not become pregnant ovulated on average 14.5 d post partum, and those that became pregnant ovulated at 19.6 d post partum (P<0.05). On the basis of clinical and hormonal data, we divided the animals into 4 groups, all presenting signs of estrus: Group 1, animals that did not ovulate (n=7) and that presented basal P(4) levels (0.01-2.34 ng/ml) during the first 30 postpartum days; Group 2, animals that ovulated and did not become pregnant (n=13); Group 3, animals that ovulated and became pregnant (n=8). Maximal P(4) levels ranged from 4.40 to 13.50 ng/ml (Group 2) and from 3.70 to 20.50 ng/ml (Group 3). Group 4 were animals that presented high plasma P(4) levels before any clinical sign of ovulation (n=3). The absence of pregnancy could not be attributed to a failure of the corpus luteum, since the groups of mares that became pregnant exhibited similar plasma P(4) levels as the group of nonpregnant mares. Our findings demonstrated that mares exhibited differences in the timing of the first postpartum estrus, the duration of the first postpartum estrus and the timing of the first postpartum ovulation according to the month of the breeding season in which foaling occurs under tropical conditions. Furthermore, our results indicate that the foal heat may be used since its utilization did not affect the total pregnancy rate of the breeding season.  相似文献

A contraceptive vaccine made of porcine zonae pellucidae (PZP) was tested in three Przewalski's mares and five banteng cows. The vaccine antigen consisted of the complete family of glycoproteins of the porcine zona pellucida, including the sperm receptor ZP3. All mares and three of five banteng were inoculated with 2 or 3 i.m. injections of approximately 65 μg of antigen given over a 6 week period. Two other banteng received inoculations of only 35 μg of antigen on the same schedule. Two of the three mares and three of five banteng cows were pregnant at the time of inoculation. No new pregnancies, as a result of postinoculation breedings, occurred among either the mares 36 months after 65 μg antigen inoculations or among the banteng for 24 months after 65 μg inoculations. One postinoculation pregnancy resulted among the two banteng receiving only 35 μg of antigen. Differences in fertility between treated and control mares and between preinoculation and postinoculation reproductive performance of the banteng were significant (P < 0.05). Urinary ovarian steroid metabolites and behavioral observations indicated follicular development and ovulations were occurring among treated mares during the year following PZP inoculations. PZP immunization produced progressively elevated anti-PZP antibodies in both species, which provided contraceptive protection. The effects of melatonin implant treatment over a 4 wk period at the summer solstice on the transition into and out of the following anovulatory season were evaluated in ovary-intact and ovariectomized mares. Melatonin implants tended to delay the timing of the final ovulation of the breeding season (P = 0.0797) in the ovary-intact mares. Although the decline in LH secretion associated with the end of the breeding season was parallel between treatments and ovarian statuses, the rate of LH secretion, as expressed by its mathematical accumulation, was lower in ovariectomized, melatonin-treated mares than in ovariectomized, control mares suggesting that melatonin administration advanced the offset of the breeding season in ovariectomized mares (P = 0.0001). The first ovulation of the subsequent breeding season was significantly delayed in the melatonin-treated mares as compared with that of control mares (P = 0.0031). During reproductive recrudescence, the time of the onset of the increase in LH secretion was similar among all 4 groups but the patterns of LH secretion were different for each treatment and ovarian status combination (P = 0.0112). Mares with melatonin implants had a slower rate of increase in LH secretion than control mares (P = 0.0001), and ovariectomized mares had a faster rate of LH increase than intact mares (P = 0.0001). These results suggest that melatonin implants during the summer solstice can alter the annual reproductive rhythm in mares and support the concept that endocrine patterns of reproductive recrudescence are not entirely independent of the ovary.  相似文献

Oestrous behaviour, ovarian follicular development, ovulation and changes in hair coat were observed in Pony mares which were unoperated, sham-ganglionectomized control or bilaterally superior cervical ganglionectomized. Surgery was performed during the winter anoestrus (1975--1976). Reproductive patterns in all groups were similar during the first breeding season (1976) after operation but in ganglionectomized mares the onset of the next breeding season (date of first ovulation in 1977), the pattern of follicular development, date of first oestrus and pattern of hair coat changes were all significantly delayed relative to those of the non-operated and sham-operated mares in 1976 and 1977 and relative to their own patterns in 1976. These results indicate that the pineal-hypothalamo-pituitary axis may regulate or moderate annual reproductive rhythms in mares.  相似文献

Background

Although the physiological effects of immunocontraceptive treatment with porcine zona pellucida (PZP) have been well studied, little is known about PZP''s effects on the scheduling of reproductive cycling. Recent behavioral research has suggested that recipients of PZP extend the receptive breeding period into what is normally the non-breeding season.

Methodology/Principal Findings

To determine if this is the case, we compiled foaling data from wild horses (Equus caballus) living on Shackleford Banks, North Carolina for 4 years pre- and 8 years post-contraception management with PZP (pre-contraception, n = 65 births from 45 mares; post-contraception, n = 97 births from 46 mares). Gestation lasts approximately 11–12 months in wild horses, placing conception at approximately 11.5 months prior to birth. Since the contraception program began in January 2000, foaling has occurred over a significantly broader range than it had before the contraception program. Foaling in PZP recipients (n = 45 births from 27 mares) has consistently occurred over a broader range than has foaling in non-recipients (n = 52 births from 19 mares). In addition, current recipients of PZP foaled later in the year than did prior recipient and non-recipient mares. Females receiving more consecutive PZP applications gave birth later in the season than did females receiving fewer applications. Finally, the efficacy of PZP declined with increasing consecutive applications before reaching 100% after five consecutive applications.

Conclusions/Significance

For a gregarious species such as the horse, the extension of reproductive cycling into the fall months has important social consequences, including decreased group stability and the extension of male reproductive behavior. In addition, reproductive cycling into the fall months could have long-term effects on foal survivorship. Managers should consider these factors before enacting immunocontraceptive programs in new populations. We suggest minor alterations to management strategies to help alleviate such unintended effects in new populations.  相似文献

A tendency for deslorelin implants to suppress subsequent follicular growth and delay return to estrus following induced ovulation has been documented in nonlactating mares. To investigate this phenomenon in lactating mares, 22 broodmares in southeast Texas were administered either deslorelin or hCG to induce ovulation in the first postpartum estrus during February and March 2001. Mares were teased daily and examined twice weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays) by transrectal ultrasonography. When a follicle >35 mm diameter was detected on Tuesday, mares were treated with either 2,500 U hCG administered intravenously or with one implant (2.1 mg) deslorelin administered subcutaneously. Mares were bred every other day until ovulation was detected or until they ceased behavioral estrus, and were examined 16 days after treatment to detect pregnancy. Follicular measurements were recorded for all mares during each examination, and interestrous intervals were recorded for mares not becoming pregnant. Treatment of mares with either hCG or deslorelin resulted in similar ovulatory responses and pregnancy rates. Deslorelin-treated mares had fewer ovarian follicles >20 mm in diameter 16 days after treatment than hCG-treated mares (P < 0.01). Interestrous intervals for mares failing to become pregnant on foal heat breeding were prolonged in deslorelin-treated compared to hCG-treated mares (P < 0.01). Date of treatment was negatively correlated with length of the interestrous interval in deslorelin-treated mares (P < 0.01), but was not correlated with length of interestrous interval in hCG-treated mares (P > 0.10). All mares failing to become pregnant from foal heat breedings became pregnant from later breedings, but the parturition to conception interval was prolonged in deslorelin-treated compared to hCG-treated mares that did not become pregnant on foal heat (P < 0.01).  相似文献

A direct enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for non-specific urinary progesterone (Po) metabolites, utilizing a non-specific monoclonal antibody against pregnanediol-3-glucuronide, was evaluated for the purpose of assessing luteal function in equids. Urinary pregnanediol-3-glucuronide (PdG) and immunoreactive PdG-like conjugate (iPdG) concentrations, indexed by creatinine, were compared to plasma Po concentrations in non-conceptive ovarian cycles through two ovulations in four mares. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of urine from lutealphase mares and a pregnant zebra revealed an absence of significant concentrations of PdG and the presence of at least three immunoreactive compounds, all of which were more polar than PdG. The concentration of iPdG in the mare ranged from a nadir of approximately 3 ng/mg Cr at the time of ovulation to nearly 400 ng/mg Cr at the mid-luteal-phase peak and paralleled plasma Po concentrations. This non-radiometric assay for iPdG permits the assessment of ovulation, luteal formation and function, and luteolysis in unprocessed urine samples from domestic mares. Data from a single zebra indicate this approach also will permit simplified and non-invasive longitudinal studies of ovarian function among a wide range of Equidae.  相似文献

Despite a large body of safety data, concern exists that porcine zonae pellucidae (PZP) immunocontraception--used to manage wild horse populations--may cause out-of-season births with resulting foal mortality. Our study at Assateague, Maryland indicated the effects of immunocontraception on season of birth and foal survival between 1990 and 2002 on wild horses from Assateague Island. Among 91 mares never treated, 69 (75.8%) of foals were born in April, May, and June (in season). Among 77 treated mares, 50 (64.9%) were born in season. Of 29 mares foaling within 1 year after treatment (contraceptive failures), 20 (68.9%) were born in season. Of 48 mares treated for greater than 2 years then withdrawn from treatment, 30 (62.5%) of 48 foals were born in season. There were no significant differences (p <.05) between either treatment group or untreated mares. Survival did not differ significantly among foals born in or out of season or among foals born to treated or untreated mares. Data indicate a lack of effect of PZP contraception on season of birth or foal survival on barrier island habitats.  相似文献

A direct radioimmunoassay for estrogen conjugates (EC) was applied to paired blood and urine samples collected from 20 mares and compared against estrone (E(1)) and estradiol-17beta (E(2)) to monitor changes in estrogen production during ovulatory cycles and early pregnancy. Blood samples were taken daily from five mares through two consecutive ovulations and from six mares at 6-h intervals starting 48 hours prior to ovulation and continuing after ovulation had occurred. Blood samples were also collected daily or three times per week from conception until Day 60 of pregnancy in nine pregnant mares. The mean urinary EC, plasma EC and plasma E(2) dynamics were parallel in nonpregnant mares, with a 3-fold increase in mean urinary EC concentrations from baseline to the ovulatory peak, a 1.8-fold increase in mean plasma EC concentrations and a 1.4-fold increase in mean plasma E(2) concentrations. In early pregnancy, a two-fold increase in mean plasma E(1) and EC concentrations occurred in concert with a five-fold rise in mean urinary EC concentrations, whereas plasma E(2) did not change. Following hydrolysis and chromatographic separation, E(1) and E(2) were identified as the hydrolytic products in the urine of nonpregnant and pregnant mares; however, an unidentified estrogen was the major hydrolytic product in nonpregnant mares and pregnant mares prior to Day 38 of pregnancy. The increased resolution of the EC profiles compared with the profiles of other estrogen components indicates that the determination of EC in urine or plasma provides a useful alternative method for monitoring reproductive events in mares.  相似文献

Previous studies showed a dramatic increase in EGF gene expression in the endometrial glands of pregnant mares around day 40 after ovulation. To investigate how the steroid hormones of pregnancy might regulate this expression, in situ hybridization was used to monitor the levels of EGF mRNA in endometrial biopsies obtained from seasonally anoestrous or ovariectomised mares given exogenous progesterone and oestrogen, alone or in combination, for up to 46 days. Biopsies were also taken from mares during the non‐pregnant cycle, during normal pregnancies and pregnancies compromised by endometrial pathology (endometrosis) or because of incompatible extraspecific embryo transfers (donkey‐in‐horse pregnancies). Only a few samples showed weak EGF expression during the late luteal phase of the oestrous cycle. During normal pregnancy, the previously observed dramatic increase of expression after day 40 of gestation was confirmed. Although aged mares suffering from endometrosis and mares carrying an extraspecific donkey conceptus showed the same increase of EGF mRNA in normal glands, this was virtually absent from gland cross‐sections compromised due to inflammatory or fibrotic changes. Administration of various doses and combinations of progesterone and oestrogen for <35 days yielded negative or only weakly positive hybridization results, whereas progesterone alone for ≥40 days upregulated EGF expression strongly irrespective of additional treatment with oestrogen. This is the first experimental evidence that EGF expression in the endometrium can be induced by progesterone alone. The requirement for prolonged progesterone priming is of considerable interest in the context of the unusually late stage of gestation at which placental attachment commences in equids. Mol. Reprod. In Experiment I, 32 mares were equally allotted to the following treatments: mares fed to A) high body condition from 90 days prepartum to foaling and maintained in high body condition to 90 days postpartum, B) high body condition from 90 days prepartum to foaling and allowed to lose body condition to 90 days postpartum, C) lose body condition from 90 days prepartum to foaling and maintained in low body condition to 90 days postpartum, and D) lose body condition from 90 days prepartum to foaling and allowed to gain weight after foaling to attain a high level of body condition by 90 days postpartum. After three cycles, pregnancy rate at 30 days postovulation was lower (P<0.05) in C mares (50%) than in those in the other three groups (100%). Maintenance of pregnancy to 90 days was also reduced (P<0.05) in C mares (25%) when compared with A, D (both 100%) and B mares (88%). Foal growth to 90 days of age was similar in all treatments. In Experiment II, 927 mares were evaluated for body condition and monitored for reproductive performance. Pregnancy rate was lower (P<0.05) and number of cycles/conception was higher (P<0.05) for barren and maiden mares entering the breeding season in thin condition and for pregnant mares foaling in thin condition (condition score less than 5.0) when compared with mares with a higher level of condition. Also, onset of estrus and ovulation appeared to be delayed in barren and maiden mares entering the breeding season in thin condition. Breeding efficiency was enhanced in mares entering the breeding season or foaling at a condition of 5.0 or above. Initial excess stores of body fat enhanced fertility. There were no detrimental effects of excess body fat stored in late gestation.  相似文献

A prostaglandin F analogue was studied in anestrous mares: a dose-response study; a study in mares presumed pregnant; and a field evaluation of effective doses in breeding establishments. A dose of 2.0mg given by single subcutaneous injection to mares with initial plasma progesterone levels greater than 1.0ng/ml, caused luteolysis on the basis of decline in plasma progesterone concentrations. Follicle maturation leading to ovulation, accompanied by estrus, was observed, and fertility at mating either by natural service or artificial insemination was satisfactory. A dose of 1.0mg was generally effective for luteolysis, but pregnancy rates were lower than after 2.0mg. A proportion of mares which had less than 1.0mg of plasma progesterone at the time of injection ovulated and became pregnant.  相似文献

Artificial photoperiod treatment is currently the best method to hasten the first ovulation of the breeding season in winter anoestrus mares. However, this is not easy to apply in large herds of mares and, to be effective, has to be planned in the northern hemisphere in December at the latest. Pharmacological treatments have been proposed as alternatives: GnRH agonists, progesterone or its synthetic agonist Altrenogest, and dopamino-antagonists, as pherphenazine, domperidone or sulpiride. Dopamino-antagonists protocols, beginning at a given day of the year, gave controversial results in terms of hastening ovulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an up-to-21-d long dopamine antagonist (sulpiride) treatment on mares at the beginning of the spring transition for its ability to hasten estrous cyclicity. In Study 1, 49 seasonally-acyclic standardbred mares, maintained in paddocks under natural photoperiod, were treated with 1 mg/kg/d sulpiride at the evidence of the first follicle with of 25 mm in diameter until ovulation for a maximum of 21 d (Group S1; n = 34) or left untreated (Group C1; n = 15). Group S1 and C1 mares showed a follicle of 35 mm in diameter after 8 and 22 d (median; P < 0.05) and ovulated after 18 and 43 d, respectively (median; P < 0.05). Twenty-two/26 and 6/15 mares of the Group S1 and C1 ovulated within 30 d from the beginning of the treatment, respectively (P < 0.05). All the mares of the study cycled until Autumn, unless they became pregnant.In Study 2, pregnancy rates after the first ovulation of the year of 22 acyclic standardbred mares maintained in paddocks under natural photo-period, treated following the same protocol as Study 1 (S2), and 47 untreated mares (C2) were compared. In Groups S2 and C2, 63.6% and 61.7% of the mares became pregnant after the first cycle (P > 0.05) and 50.0% and 61.1% of the remaining became pregnant in the following cycles (P > 0.05), respectively.Beginning with sulpiride treatment when follicles were 25 mm in diameter resulted in a significant advancement of cyclicity in non-photo-stimulated mares. Pregnancy rates after artificial insemination of treated mares were similar to those of untreated animals.  相似文献

Deeply acyclic (seasonally anovulatory) mares were treated with GnRH or a GnRH analogue to induce follicular development and ovulation. Courses of GnRH (3--4) were administered at approximately 10-day intervals to reproduce the gonadotrophin surges which precede ovulation in the normal cycle. Exogenous progesterone was administered in an attempt to reproduce the luteal phase pattern. Induced serum FSH concentrations were comparable to those causing follicular development in the normal cycle, but induced LH levels were lower and of shorter duration than those of the periovulatory surge. Three of 4 mares treated with GnRH appeared to ovulate, but did not establish CL. Nine of 10 mares given GnRH analogue also developed follicles during the final treatment course, as did mares treated with progesterone only, while only 1 of 5 untreated control mares showed any ovarian development. Failure to induce final follicular maturation and CL development by this treatment regimen may be due to an inadequate LH surge at the time of the expected ovulation associated with the low preovulatory oestradiol-17 beta surge, possibly caused by the preceding FSH stimulation being inadequate or inappropriate. Progesterone treatment increased baseline FSH concentrations in GnRH-treated mares, and also stimulated follicular development in mares not treated with GnRH, indicating a possible role for progesterone in folliculogenesis and, indirectly, ovulation.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to determine changes in the abundance of oestrogen and progesterone receptor (ER alpha and PR) mRNAs in equine endometrium during the oestrous cycle and early pregnancy, and under the influence of exogenous steroids. In Expt 1, endometrial biopsies were obtained from non-mated mares during oestrus and at days 5, 10 and 15 after ovulation, and from pregnant mares at days 10, 15 and 20 after ovulation. There were overall effects of day on the abundance of ER alpha (P = 0.0001) and PR (P = 0.0014) mRNAs. The amount of ER alpha mRNA decreased at day 10 of pregnancy, and PR mRNA was reduced at day 5 in non-mated mares and at day 15 of pregnancy, compared with oestrous values. Experiment 2 was conducted to determine the effects of exogenous steroids on endometrial ER alpha and PR mRNAs. Endometrial biopsies were obtained from 19 anoestrous mares that had been treated with vehicle, oestradiol, progesterone, or oestradiol followed by progesterone for either a short or a long duration. The steroid treatment affected the abundance of ER alpha mRNA (P = 0.0420), which was higher (P < 0.05) in the oestradiol group than in the group treated with oestradiol followed by long duration progesterone. The steroid treatment did not affect the abundance of PR mRNA. These results demonstrate that the amount of steroid receptor mRNA changes with the fluctuating steroid environment in the uterine endometrium of cyclic and early pregnant mares, and that the duration of progesterone dominance may affect ER alpha gene expression. In addition, factors other than steroids may regulate ER alpha and PR gene expression in equine uterine endometrium.  相似文献

An enzyme immunoassay for urinary pregnanediol-3 alpha-glucuronide (PdG) was evaluated for the indirect measurement of progesterone metabolites during the oestrous cycle and early pregnancy of uncaptured North American bison. Comparisons between plasma progesterone and urinary PdG, dose-response parallelism between the standard curve and diluted urine samples and high-performance liquid cochromatography revealed that PdG was a primary immunoreactive urinary metabolite of progesterone in bison. Urine samples were collected directly from the soil from 29 bison cows during the August rutting season and analysed for PdG. Eight bison cows demonstrated complete oestrous cycles ranging from 19 to 26 days (mean cycle length = 23.12 +/- 0.76 days) and behavioural oestrus among four of these cows correlated with PdG nadirs. Mean PdG nadirs were 63.62 +/- 21.61 ng/mg urinary creatinine (Cr) and mean peak midluteal values were 546.01 +/- 130.73 ng/mg Cr. Seven of eight became pregnant, indicating that bison exhibit a second seasonal oestrus. Eighteen other bison cows were pregnant prior to the beginning of the study and demonstrated non-cyclic increased PdG concentrations (greater than 200 ng/mg Cr) during the 30-day course of collection. Three cows ovulated and became pregnant during the 30-day collection period and then exhibited increasing urinary PdG concentrations. Ovarian function in ewes at the onset of the breeding season   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Transrectal ultrasonography of ovaries was performed each day, during the expected transition from anoestrus to the breeding season (mid-August to early October), in six Western white-faced cross-bred ewes, to record ovarian antral follicles > or = 3 mm in size and luteal structures. Jugular blood samples were collected daily for radioimmunoassay (RIA) of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), oestradiol and progesterone. The first ovulation of the breeding season was followed by the full-length oestrous cycle in all ewes studied. Prior to the ovulation, all ewes exhibited a distinct increase in circulating concentrations of progesterone, yet no corpora lutea (CL) were detected and luteinized unovulated follicles were detected in only three ewes. Secretion of FSH was not affected by the cessation of anoestrus and peaks of episodic FSH fluctuations were associated with the emergence of ovarian follicular waves (follicles growing from 3 to > or = 5 mm). During the 17 days prior to the first ovulation of the breeding season, there were no apparent changes in the pattern of emergence of follicular waves. Mean daily numbers of small antral follicles (not growing beyond 3 mm in diameter) declined (P < 0.05) after the first ovulation. The ovulation rate, maximal total and mean luteal volumes and maximal serum progesterone concentrations, but not mean diameters of ovulatory follicles, were ostensibly lower during the first oestrous cycle of the breeding season compared with the mid-breeding season of Western white-faced ewes. Oestradiol secretion by ovarian follicles appeared to be fully restored, compared with anoestrous ewes, but it was not synchronized with the growth of the largest antral follicles of waves until after the beginning of the first oestrous cycle. An increase in progesterone secretion preceding the first ovulation of the breeding season does not result, as previously suggested, from the ovulation of immature ovarian follicles and short-lived CL, but progesterone may be produced by luteinized unovulated follicles and/or interstitial tissue of unknown origin. This increase in serum concentrations of progesterone does not alter the pattern of follicular wave development, hence it seems to be important mainly for inducing oestrous behaviour, synchronizing it with the preovulatory surge of luteinizing hormone (LH), and preventing premature luteolysis during the ensuing luteal phase. Progesterone may also enhance ovarian follicular responsiveness to circulating gonadotropins through a local mechanism.  相似文献

Immunoreactive urinary oestrogen conjugates were assessed in daily urine samples (approximately 5 samples/week) collected from 8 Przewalski's mares maintained under semi-free-ranging pasture conditions. The relative percentage contributions of immunoreactive urinary oestrogens during different reproductive stages (oestrus, luteal phase, early, mid- and late gestation) were determined using high-pressure liquid chromatography. In general, conjugated forms of oestrone (oestrone sulphate and oestrone glucuronide) were the major excreted immunoreactive oestrogens in nonpregnant and pregnant Przewalski's mares. Variations in urinary oestrogen conjugates indicated that the onset of oestrous cyclicity coincided with increasing daylengths, and the non-conception oestrous cycle was 24.1 +/- 0.7 days (n = 17) in duration. Most copulations (29/35, 82.9%) were observed between Day -4 and Day +1 from the preovulatory oestrogen conjugates peak (Day 0). Based on known copulation dates, the mean gestation length was 48.6 +/- 0.4 weeks (range 47.3-50.3 weeks). During pregnancy, urinary excretion of oestrogen conjugates increased approximately 300-fold over levels in non-pregnant mares, reaching peak concentrations by Week +24 (51% of gestation). These results demonstrate that longitudinal reproductive events, including oestrous cyclicity and pregnancy, can be monitored precisely by evaluating urinary oestrogen conjugates in samples from Przewalski's mares maintained under semi-free-ranging conditions.  相似文献
