Omnivory does not prevent trophic cascades in pelagic food webs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
1. Strong trophic cascades have been well documented in pelagic food webs of temperate lakes. In contrast, the limited available evidence suggests that strong cascades are less typical in tropical lakes.
2. To measure the effects of omnivorous tilapia on planktonic communities and water transparency of a small man-made tropical lake, we performed a 5-week in situ enclosure experiment with five densities of fish randomly allocated to 20 enclosures. Zooplankton and Phytoplankton biomasses as well as water transparency were measured weekly.
3. Results show that omnivorous tilapia significantly decreased the abundance of large Cladocerans, increased the abundance of small algae (greatest axial linear dimension <50  μ m) and decreased water transparency as predicted by trophic cascade theory.
4. Therefore, omnivory was not a sufficient factor to prevent a trophic cascade in this pelagic community, although the cascade effect was weaker than reported from many north temperate, nutrient-rich lakes.  相似文献

Linearity in the aggregate effects of multiple predators in a food web   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Theory in community ecology often assumes that predator species have similar indirect effects and thus can be treated mathematically as a single functional unit (e.g. guild or trophic level). This assumption is questionable biologically because predator species typically differ in their effects, creating the potential for nonlinearities when they coexist. We evaluated the nature of indirect effects caused by three species of hunting spider predators, singly and in multiple species combinations, on grass and herb plants in experimental old-field food webs. Despite the potential for nonlinearity, indirect effects in different multiple predator combinations consistently did not differ significantly from the respective means of the single species effects. Thus, for this experimental system, the whole was simply the average of the parts. Consequently, models which abstract predator species as single trophic levels would successfully predict indirect effects in this system regardless of the composition of the predator fauna.  相似文献

Because light in the pelagic environment is partially polarized, it has been suggested that the polarization sensitivity found in certain pelagic species may serve to enhance the contrast of their transparent zooplankton prey. We examined its potential during cruises in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean and at a field station on the Great Barrier Reef. First, we collected various species of transparent zooplankton and micronekton and photographed them between crossed polarizers. Many groups, particularly the cephalopods, pelagic snails, salps and ctenophores, were found to have ciliary, muscular or connective tissues with striking birefringence. In situ polarization imagery of the same species showed that, while the degree of underwater polarization was fairly high (approx. 30% in horizontal lines of sight), tissue birefringence played little to no role in increasing visibility. This is most likely due to the low radiance of the horizontal background light when compared with the downwelling irradiance. In fact, the dominant radiance and polarization contrasts are due to unpolarized downwelling light that has been scattered from the animal viewed against the darker and polarized horizontal background light. We show that relatively simple algorithms can use this negative polarization contrast to increase visibility substantially.  相似文献

In this study, we explore the role of multiple predators on the transient and long-term dynamic outcomes of biological control. Consistent with previous theory, our results suggest that specialist predators ought to promote less stable long-term biological control than generalists, while generalists readily drive suppression of nontarget prey species. Interestingly, our results show that the combination of specialists and generalists act synergistically to promote well-behaved biological control. This occurs because generalists do not as readily drive nontarget suppression in the presence of specialist, as specialists shunt energy away from generalists, lowering generalists’ growth rates and so lessening their impact on nontarget species. Similarly, specialists have a less destabilizing (i.e., less variable) influence in the presence of generalists, as generalists shunt energy away from specialists, reducing their growth rates and muting boom and bust dynamics. Finally, our results suggest the intriguing potential that endemic generalist predators, not introduced generalist predators, may often be responsible for the suppression and elimination of nontarget species. The abundance of pelagic invertebrate predators in relation to turbidity and depth gradients in Lake Hiidenvesi (southern Finland) were studied. In the shallow (<5 m) and the most turbid (up to 75 NTU) part of the lake, the community of invertebrate predators consisted of cyclopoid copepods (max biomass >500 μg dw l−1) and Leptodora kindtiii (Focke) (17 μg dw l−1), while in the less turbid (10–40 NTU) stratifying area Chaoborus flavicans (Meigen) dominated (max 146 μg dw l−1). In the temporarily stratifying and moderately turbid basin Chaoborus and small-bodied invertebrate predators co-existed. Mysis relicta (Lovén) occurred only in the stratifying area (max 15 μg dw l−1). The results suggested that both water depth and turbidity contributed to the community structure of Chaoborus flavicans. Depth great enough for stratification was of special importance and its effect was amplified by elevated turbidity, while high turbidity alone could not maintain chaoborid populations. Mysis relicta also requires a hypolimnetic refuge but is more sensitive to low oxygen concentrations and may therefore be forced to the epilimnion where it is vulnerable to fish predation. Cyclopoids as rapid swimmers can take advantage at elevated turbidity levels and coexist in high biomass with fish even in shallow water. Leptodora kindtii can form high biomass despite planktivorous fish providing that turbidity exceeds 20 NTU. The results demonstrated that depth and water turbidity can strongly regulate the abundance and species composition of invertebrate predators. These factors must thus be taken into account when applying food web management, which aims to reduce phytoplankton biomass by depressing planktivorous fish.  相似文献

Prey modify their behaviour to avoid predation, but dilemmas arise when predators vary in hunting style. Behaviours that successfully evade one predator sometimes facilitate exposure to another predator, forcing the prey to choose the lesser of two evils. In such cases, we need to quantify behavioural strategies in a mix of predators. We model optimal behaviour of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua larvae in a water column, and find the minimal vulnerability from three common predator groups with different hunting modes; 1) ambush predators that sit‐and‐wait for approaching fish larvae; 2) cruising invertebrates that eat larvae in their path; and 3) fish which are visually hunting predators. We use a state‐dependent model to find optimal behaviours (vertical position and swimming speed over a diel light cycle) under any given exposure to the three distinct modes of predation. We then vary abundance of each predator and quantify direct and indirect effects of predation. The nature and strength of direct and indirect effects varied with predator type and abundance. Larvae escaped about half the mortality from fish by swimming deeper to avoid light, but their activity level and cumulative predation from ambush predators increased. When ambush invertebrates dominated, it was optimal to be less active but in more lit habitats, and predation from fish increased. Against cruising predators, there was no remedy. In all cases, the shift in behaviour allowed growth to remain almost the same, while total predation were cut by one third. In early life stages with high and size‐dependent mortality rates, growth rate can be a poor measure of the importance of behavioural strategies.  相似文献

A recent meta‐analysis indicates that trophic cascades (indirect effects of predators on plants via herbivores) are weak in marine plankton in striking contrast to freshwater plankton ( Shurin et al. 2002 , Ecol. Lett., 5, 785–791). Here we show that in a marine plankton community consisting of jellyfish, calanoid copepods and algae, jellyfish predation consistently reduced copepods but produced two distinct, opposite responses of algal biomass. Calanoid copepods act as a switch between alternative trophic cascades along food chains of different length and with counteracting effects on algal biomass. Copepods reduced large algae but simultaneously promoted small algae by feeding on ciliates. The net effect of jellyfish on total algal biomass was positive when large algae were initially abundant in the phytoplankton, negative when small algae were dominant, but zero when experiments were analysed in combination. In contrast to marine systems, major pathways of energy flow in Daphnia‐dominated freshwater systems are of similar chain length. Thus, differences in the length of alternative, parallel food chains may explain the apparent discrepancy in trophic cascade strength between freshwater and marine planktonic systems.  相似文献

Abstract: Sampling techniques for Cacopsylla pyri adults and its predators ( Anthocoris nemoralis, Coccinellidae spp. and Chrysopidae spp.) were comparatively studied over autumn–winter 2000 in three pear orchards of Ferrara Province in northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna Region. Bating tray (or frappage), yellow sticky traps and corrugated cardboard traps were employed for insect monitoring while water pan traps were used for the phenological timing of leaf fall. The beating tray provided a more representative sampling method to evaluate the population dynamics and density of C. pyri and its predators than the yellow sticky traps; the corrugated cardboard proved a reliable tool to assess the predator population dynamic in overwintering refuges. Along with climate (temperature) and plant physiological (leaf fall) data, the results reported provide useful information for the scheduling of winter treatments, also in case to control the spread of the mycoplasma-like organism (pear decline) in spring.  相似文献

1. We examined the effects of multiple predators from an intertidal boulder food web to test whether and how three different predator species affected the survival of a small amphipod species. 2. Predators were chosen because they differ in their foraging mode, two feeding at the bottom and in benthic refuges (nemertean and shrimp) and one in the water-column (juveniles of a fish). 3. Mortality of amphipods was not affected by nemerteans, but was high in the presence of shrimp or fish. Highest mortalities were observed in predator-combinations that contained both shrimp and fish. Amphipods responded to shrimp by escaping into the water column, while they avoided fish by remaining in the refuge. We conclude that predator-specific defence causes conflicts for prey when both shrimp and fish are present. 4. Comparing observed effects of multiple predators with expected effects revealed risk enhancement for the shrimp + fish combination. A comparison of different predictive models revealed that the multiplicative model was most appropriate, although additive models may work well under certain conditions. 5. Based on known consumption-ranges of the predators used, we conclude that nemerteans were saturated with prey while fish were far from their saturation point. A predator's functional response curve (prey consumption in relation to prey abundance) determines its impact on prey populations. This knowledge appears essential in order to predict whether prey organisms face risk enhancement, risk reduction or additive effects of multiple predators.  相似文献

The planting of transgenic crops expressing Bacillus thuringiensis endotoxins is widespread throughout the world; the prolific increase in their application exposes nontarget organisms to toxins designed to control pests. To date, studies have focused upon the effects of Bt endotoxins on specific herbivores and detritivores, without consideration of their persistence within arthropod food webs. Here, we report the first quantitative field evaluation of levels of Bt endotoxin within nontarget herbivores and the uptake by higher order arthropods. Antibody-based assays indicated significant quantities of detectable Cry1Ab endotoxin within nontarget herbivores which feed on transgenic corn (including the corn flea beetle, Chaetocnema pulicaria, Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica and southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi). Furthermore, arthropod predators (Coccinellidae, Araneae, and Nabidae) collected from these agroecosystems also contained significant quantities of Cry1Ab endotoxin indicating its movement into higher trophic levels. This uptake by predators is likely to have occurred by direct feeding on plant material (in predators which are facultatively phytophagous) or the consumption of arthropod prey which contained these proteins. These data indicate that long-term exposure to insecticidal toxins occurs in the field. These levels of exposure should therefore be considered during future risk assessments of transgenic crops to nontarget herbivores and arthropod predators.  相似文献

We tested in a field experiment two hypotheses for why polyphagous predators aggregate at concentrations of aphids: 1) because they are attracted directly to aphids as prey, or 2) because they are attracted to alternative prey that aggregate around the honeydew produced by aphids. Small plots were established in the field with two experimental treatments, aphid addition and honey spraying, and a watersprayed control, each replicated 10 times. Arthropods were recorded by pitfall traps and sticky traps in each plot. Diptera were significantly more abundant in the honey plots. Of the predators, Agonum dorsale, “All carabids” and Philonthus sp. were most abundant in the honey plots; Tachyporus spp. and carabid and staphylinid larvae were most abundant in the aphid addition plots. It is suggested that these results reflect differences among the predators in their ability to tolerate and utilise aphids as food.  相似文献

Abstract:  The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revolutionized the field of diagnostics, and today it has routine applications in medical, veterinary, forensic and botanical sciences. The fields of biological control and insect pest management have generally been slow to adopt PCR-based diagnostics in comparison with other fields of science. However, there has been increasing interest in the use of molecular diagnostic tools in arthropod biological control. In applied entomology, molecular techniques have generally been used for insect identification and systematics; however, PCR-based techniques are increasingly becoming recognized as valuable tools in ecological studies. Here, we review research that has used PCR-based techniques for parasitoid and predator/prey identification and detection, and place these studies in the context of their contributions to biological control of arthropods. The status and future directions of diagnostic molecular markers in applied entomology and insect pest management are also discussed.  相似文献

The consumption rates of nine species of Carabidae and five species of Staphylinidae which feed on the aphid Sitobion avenae (F.) were studied under conditions of surplus food in the laboratory. The mean daily consumption of aphids was between 2.5% and 45.6% of the predator species' mean body weight; the lowest values were for large Carabidae and the highest for small Staphylinidae. Separate significant positive relationships were found between the mean total weight of aphids consumed per day, and the mean weight of the adult of the carabid and staphylinid species at each temperature. A re-evaluation of published data also showed this. The slopes of the regression lines were steeper for the Staphylinidae than for the Carabidae and possible reasons are given. The regression equations could be used in simulation models to determine the maximum possible effects of these beetles on aphid populations.
Résumé La consommation de Sitobion avenae F. par 9 espèces de Carabidae et de 5 de Staphylinidae a été examinée au laboratoire en condition de surapprovisionnement. Les expériences ont été répétées dans 4 conditions de températures variables caractérisées par des moyennes de 12°3, 16°6, 20°6 et 23°6. Les poids moyens de pucerons consommés variaient entre 2,5% et 45,6% du poids des prédateurs; les valeurs les plus faibles correspondant aux gros carabes et les plus élévées aux petits staphylins.Les différences entre sexes étaient vraisemblablement dues au dimorphisme pondéral. Une relation significative et positive entre le poids moyen de pucerons consommés et le poids moyen du coléoptère a été mise en évidence tant pour les carabes que les staphylins à toutes les températures (Fig. 1, Tableau 2). Cette relation ressort aussi d'une réévaluation des données publiées. L'utilisation de formules de régression dans des modèles de simulation permettra de prédire les effets des carabes et des staphylins sur les populations de pucerons dans ces conditions optimales.

1. Subtropical reservoirs of Australia are commonly subject to summer blooms of cyanobacteria. The potential for food web manipulation to control cyanobacterial blooms was investigated in Lake Maroon, south east Queensland using enclosures in which the density of the Australian gudgeon Hypseleotris spp. was manipulated. 2. Zooplankton biomass and community structure were strongly affected by fish density. A size dependent predation effect of Hypseleotris on zooplankton was observed at ambient fish densities, and the community shifted towards a dominance of copepod juveniles and nauplii. Substantial increases in the populations of Ceriodaphnia and calanoid copepods were observed at low fish densities and in the absence of fish. 3. At ambient fish densities total phytoplankton and the proportion of cyanobacteria were maintained at levels similar to those prevailing at day 0. Total phytoplankton and the proportion of cyanobacteria decreased substantially at low fish densities and in the absence of fish. Chlorophytes became dominant in the ‘no fish’ treatment and the grazing‐resistant species Oocystis and Dictyosphaerium were significantly higher than at ambient fish densities. 4. The experiment demonstrated a strong positive relationship between Hypseleotris density and cyanobacteria, and the results suggest that subtropical reservoirs may be suited to food web manipulation as a means of controlling summer cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

Abstract Alien invertebrate predators have been introduced to Hawaii to control pests, particularly in lowland areas where most crops are grown. We developed techniques for assessing the impact of these predators on native food webs in relatively pristine upland areas where, it was hypothesized, few lowland predators might be found. Predator densities were assessed along transects within the Alakaii Swamp on Kaua'i. The most numerous alien biocontrol agents found were Halmus chalybeus (Coccinellidae), a species known to feed on Lepidoptera eggs. Laboratory experiments were conducted using two genera of endemic Lepidoptera, Scotorythra and Eupithecia (Geometridae), that are of considerable conservation value, the former because of its recent speciation across Hawaii, the latter for its unique predatory larvae. Techniques were developed for detecting Lepidoptera DNA within the guts of alien predators using prey-specific PCR primers. General primers amplified fragments of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene from beetles and Lepidoptera. The sequences were aligned and used successfully to design target-specific primers for general detection of the remains of Geometridae and for particular species, including Scotorythra rara and Eupithecia monticolans. DNA fragments amplified were short [140-170 base pairs (bp)], optimizing detection periods following prey ingestion. Trials using the introduced biocontrol agent Curinus coeruleus (Coccinellidae) demonstrated detection of Lepidoptera DNA fragments = 151 bp in 85-100% of beetles after 24 h digestion of an early instar larva. This study provides a framework for future use of molecular gut analysis in arthropod conservation ecology and food web research with considerable potential for quantifying threats to endemic species in Hawaii and elsewhere.  相似文献

Trophic cascades: the primacy of trait-mediated indirect interactions   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Trophic cascades are textbook examples of predator indirect effects on ecological systems. Yet there is considerable debate about their nature, strength and overall importance. This debate stems in part from continued uncertainty about the ultimate mechanisms driving cascading effects. We present a synthesis of empirical evidence in support of one possible ultimate mechanism: the foraging‐predation risk trade‐offs undertaken by intermediary species. We show that simple trade‐off behaviour can lead to both positive and negative indirect effects of predators on plant resources and hence can explain considerable contingency on the nature and strength of cascading effects among systems. Thus, predicting the sign and strength of indirect effect simply requires knowledge of habitat and resource use by prey with regard to predators’ presence, habitat use and hunting mode. The synthesis allows us to postulate a hypothesis for new conceptualization of trophic cascades which is to be viewed as an ultimate trade‐off between intervening species. In this context, different predators apply different rules of engagement based on their hunting mode and habitat use. These different rules then determine whether behavioural effects persist or attenuate at the level of the food chain.  相似文献

根据1997~2000年东海23°30'~33°00'N、118°30'~128°00'E海域4个季节海洋调查,运用磷虾类物种丰度和同步的温、盐度资料,进行曲线拟合,构造数学模型,计算各种磷虾分布的最适温度和盐度,并参考其地理和季节分布特征,对东海浮游磷虾类生态类型进行定量分析.结果表明,在磷虾优势种中,太平洋磷虾(Euphausia pacifica)是温带外海种,小型磷虾(E. nana)是暖温带外海种,中华假磷虾(Pseudeuphausia sinica)是亚热带近海种,宽额假磷虾(P. latifrons)是热带大洋种.这些物种的高丰度区依次代表黄海冷水团,冬春季的混合水团,夏秋季的混合水团和暖流水团的位置,是良好的水团指示种.柔弱磷虾(E. tenera)、隆柱螯磷虾(Stylocheiron carinatum)、长额磷虾(E. diomedeae)、近缘柱螯磷虾(S. affine)、Nematoscelis sp.、瘦线脚磷虾(N. gracilis)、长线脚磷虾(N. atlantica)、Stylocheiron sp.、三晶柱螯磷虾(S. suhmii)和二晶柱螯磷虾(S. microphthalma)是热带大洋种.娇嫩线脚磷虾(Nematoscelis tenella)、三刺燧磷虾(Thysanopoda tricuspidata)、大眼磷虾(E. sanzoi)、拟磷虾(E. similis)、鸟喙磷虾(E. mutica)、短磷虾(E. brevis)、卷叶磷虾(E. recurva)和Euphausia sp.是亚热带外海种.在确定磷虾类生态类型过程中,最适温度具有更好的参考价值.  相似文献

A simple heuristic theory based on conservation of matter and describing the fate of autotrophic production in pelagic ecosystems was developed to assist in conceptualizing how zooplankton affect sedimentation processes in lakes and oceans. The theory predicted that effects of zooplankton on the fraction of autotrophic incorporation that sediments (the export ratio) will be a function of factors related both to zooplankton digestion and egestion and to tendencies of particulate matter to sediment directly prior to mineralization. As a result, effects of zooplankton grazing on the export ratio were predicted to be site-dependent, a function of physical conditions and zooplankton communities characterizing an ecosystem. The theory was tested by monitoring autotrophic production of C, N, and P, sedimentation of C, N, and P, and zooplankton biomass in two lakes of the Canadian shield characterized by contrasting morphometry and food-web structure. In Lake 110, a small elongate lake protected from wind exposure, export ratios of C, N, and P declined strongly with zooplankton biomass. In contrast, in L240, a larger lake with considerably greater wind exposure, export ratios increased with zooplankton biomass. These results were consistent with predictions of our theory that effects of zooplankton on sedimentation processes will depend on the tendency of particulate matter to directly sediment relative to the tendency of egested materials to sediment. However, no significant differences in relationships between export ratios for C, N, and P and zooplankton biomass were found.  相似文献

根据1997~2000年在东海23°30′~33°00′N、118°30′~128°00′E海域4个季节的海洋调查资料,探讨了东海浮游枝角类生态特征、数量变化和相应的动力学。结果表明,枝角类丰度夏季最高(17.16 ind.(100 m3)-1),秋季(14.68 ind.(100 m3)-1)次之,春季(0.63 ind.(100 m3)-1)较低,冬季该类未出现。春、夏、秋季的肥胖三角氵蚤(Evadne tergestina)和夏季的鸟喙尖头氵蚤(Penilia avirostris)是影响枝角类数量分布的主要种;春、夏、秋季枝角类总丰度与盐度呈负线性相关关系,与水温相关关系不显著。枝角类较高丰度区常位于沿岸淡水水团与其他水团交汇处偏沿岸水一侧。其数量变化动力主要来自沿岸冲淡水势力,特别是长江冲淡水势力的消长。枝角类在东海出现率较低,有一定的集群性,较高丰度的分布基本上局限在冲淡水势力影响范围内,其高丰度的水域是沿岸水团的一个重要标志。  相似文献
