Seventy-four lapilli from Lost River suckers captured in Upper Klamath Lake in 1970 during a snag fishery on spawning adults and 192 lapilli from adults sacrificed from 2001–2006 were examined to determine age and growth parameters; lapilli from 165 shortnose suckers sacrificed from Upper Klamath Lake from 2001–2006 were also examined. Relative marginal distance analyses indicated that growth marks were annuli and formed in December–January. Lost River suckers from the historic collection were aged to 57 years, while Lost River and shortnose suckers from the recent collection were aged to 40 years and 24 years, respectively. Larger and older Lost River suckers were represented in the historic collection compared to the recent collection. Uncoupling of otolith length and fish length in Lost River suckers as well as a large spread in the predicted age- at-size for shortnose suckers precluded the ability to back-calculate size-at-age. Likelihood ratio tests indicated the growth model parameters were significantly different at both the sex and collection level. Growth in body length for both species appeared determinate in that growth was rapid until maturity, and then slowed over several years until growth in length was nearly nonexistent; a 650–700 mm Lost River sucker could be between 14 and 57 years old, while a 460 mm shortnose sucker could range from 12–24 years old. In contrast, while growth in body length slowed for both species, body mass continued to increase. This growth strategy, which is also found in other western lake suckers, may allow for more energy to be utilized for reproduction and help populations persist in spite of years of limited recruitment or recruitment failure.

Population dynamics of chironomid larvae in the littoral zone of Lake Maarsseveen I were investigated to a depth of 6 m. No essential differences in the composition and density between various sampling stations in the shallow sand flats were found. Two species,Cladotanytarsus mancus andStictochironomus sticticus, were found to be the main components of the chironomid population to a depth of 4 m. The density ofCladotanytarsus, which occurred predominantly to a depth of 1 m, increased from June to a maximum in December. In May and June, the entireCladotanytarsus population emerged.Stictochironomus had its peak of abundance in June. From this cohort, a part, differing in size for each of the various years, emerged in August. The remainder of this population, together with the offspring of the August adults, emerged in May. The size of the August midges, and the number of its eggs was smaller than that of the May midges. At depths greater than 4 m,Tanytarsus bathophillus was found to be the dominant chironomid. In summer the abundance of the small (second and third instars)Stictochironomus was primarily affected by water mite predation. In autumn and winter,Cladotanytarsus was the main food source for water mites. In autumn, whenStictochironomus larvae have molted into the fourth instar, predation by bream decreased the density of these larvae. In winter, the impact of this fish is negligible.

In Mexico, more than 40 000 ha of dams, lakes, canals and drains are infested with waterhyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). To prevail over the problems resulting from this infestation, specific management programs are needed. Under a national program to control the waterhyacinth, guidelines to deal with the related ecological, social, technical and economic factors, and specific strategies to reduce coverage were developed. The ecological factors which were noted include the identification of the most affected areas and the consequences of proposed treatments. The social aspects embraced the stimulation of user awareness as to the importance of water quality, the creation of organizations to coordinate user-sponsored control activities, and the awakening of a community identity. Basic to all are the technical and economic aspects which make the activities feasible and operational. Examples are given of control by means of water level management, mechanical controls using trituration, and the application of chemical and biological agents, all of which may be combined in an integral program.

Lake Huetzalin (Xochimilco) is a shallow waterbody in Mexico City with a dominance of the littoral cladocerans Simocephalus vetulus, Alona rectangula, and Pleuroxus aduncus. Here, we present data on the life table and population dynamics of these three cladoceran species on two types of diets (alga Scenedesmus acutus and detritus). We also analyzed the effect of competition on population growth using Scenedesmus, which proved to be the better diet than detritus. We hypothesize that feces of the larger cladoceran species (S. vetulus) could be a food source for the smaller taxa (A. rectangula and P. aduncus). Experiments were conducted in 100 ml beakers with 50 ml of medium in each at a temperature of 23 ± 1°C. We studied the demography of three test species using two food types with four replicates for each treatment in the life table experiments. Based on the data thus obtained we further studied the competition between the cladocerans on a diet of Scenedesmus. The maximal growth rates obtained for P. aduncus, S. vetulus, and A. rectangula fed Scenedesmus acutus were: 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 d−1, respectively. Among the test species, S. vetulus had the highest survivorship of 77 days when cultured on detritus and P. aduncus the lowest of 20 days on Scenedesmus. The gross reproductive rate (offspring female−1 lifespan−1) ranged from 6 neonates in Pleuroxus to 160 in Simocephalus per female. From the competition experiments conducted using alga as the diet, we observed that A. rectangula and, especially P. aduncus, had higher growth rates in the presence of S. vetulus than in the controls. This facilitation could be one of the reasons for higher species diversity in the littoral of water bodies.

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic data from the primary producers in mangrove ecosystems are needed to investigate trophic links and biogeochemical cycling. Compared with other mangrove species (e.g. Rhizophora mangle) very few measurements have been conducted on the white mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa. The carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic and elemental compositions of L. racemosa were analyzed and compared from Florida and Belize. 13C values of L. racemosa from Florida (mean = –26.4) were slightly higher than those from Twin Cays, Belize (mean = -27.4), which may be due to higher salinity in some parts of the Florida site. There was no difference between the 15N values from L. racemosa from these two sites (Florida mean = 0.6; Belize mean = 0.3), which are indicative of nitrogen derived from nitrogen fixation in a planktonic marine system. However, higher 15N values from L. racemosa at Man of War Cay in Belize (11.4 and 12.3), which is fertilized by roosting marine birds (14.0), illustrate that L. racemosa can sensitively reflect alternative nitrogen sources. Although the isotopic data could not distinguish between Avicennia germinans, R. mangle and L. racemosa in Belize the L. racemosa had considerably higher C/N ratios (46.5 – 116.1) compared with the Florida samples (42.2 – 76.0) or the other mangrove species. Unlike some previous findings from R. mangle, substrate characteristics (e.g. salinity, NH4 +, and H2S) were not related to the isotopic or elemental composition of L. racemosa. 13C, 15N and C/N were analyzed for ecosystem components from L. racemosa habitats at Twin Cays, including other plants (e.g. R. mangle, A. germinans and seagrass), detritus, microbial mats and sediments. Results from mass-balance calculations show that mangrove detritus composes very little of the sediment, which is principally composed of microbial biomass (80 – 90%). Detritus at some sites is also influenced by sources other than that from L. racemosa, including seagrass leaves.

Lake Tanganyika, the second-oldest and second-deepest lake in the world, harbors an impressive cichlid fish fauna counting about 250 endemic species that are characterized by a great level of ecological, morphological, and behavioral specialization. This study describes and compares cichlid fish communities at two rocky shores with differential human impact in the south of Lake Tanganyika. Species inventories and depth-dependent abundances were elaborated. About 41 and 46 sympatric cichlid species were recorded in the two study sites, respectively. Variabilichromis moorii was the most abundant species (29–60% of total number of fishes), followed by Aulonocranus dewindti (3–19%), Tropheus moorii (12%), Ophthalmotilapia ventralis (4–10%), Eretmodus cyanostictus (6–11%), and Cyathopharynx furcifer (0.01–9%). All other species had abundances below 5%. It further emerged that large cichlids such as Petrochromis species, Cyathopharynx furcifer, and Lobochilotes labiatus were very rare at one location, with frequencies of 0.55% or less. Territorial sizes of three particularly abundant species, Variabilichromis moorii, Aulonocranus dewindti, and Tropheus moorii, were assessed by behavioral observations. We distinguished between territorial core areas and total defended area, yielding average core areas between 0.4 (V. moorii) and 1.6 m2 (T. moorii), and total defended areas averaging for each species between 1.6 (V. moorii) and 5.0 m2 (A. dewindti) with no significant differences between the two study sites. The data on individual densities are also relevant for evolutionary studies, in that they allow more accurate calculations of effective population sizes.

The effect of four microalgal chlorophytes, Chlorella vulgaris,Scenedesmus quadricauda, Chlorococcum sp. and Ankistrodesmus convolutus, on the survival, larval development and adultbody size of the mosquito Aedes aegypti was investigated. The percentage mortality of larvae fed with C. vulgaris, Chlorococcum sp.or S. quadricauda after six days was 100%, 84% and 88%,respectively. Delayed pupation and body size reduction of the mosquitoesfed with C. vulgaris, Chlorococcum sp. and S. quadricaudawere observed. In contrast, larvae fed with A. convolutus werebigger than those fed with normal insectory feed. The study showed thatC. vulgaris, S. quadricauda and Chlorococcum sp. have potentialto be used as larvicidal agents.

When two herbivore pest species are potential hosts of a single parasitoid species, two questions arise. Firstly, which host is preferable for mass rearing in terms of later parasitoid performance, and secondly, how do parasitoids perform in mixed herbivore situations after colony establishment? We tested Hyssopus pallidus, a gregarious parasitoid of two major pests of apple, Cydia (Grapholita) molesta and Cydia pomonella, before and after landing on apples infested by one of the two Cydia species. Pre-alighting host preference was tested in a Y-tube olfactometer setup, and parasitism success in a contact bioassay. To gain information on parasitoid performance throughout the growing season, different fruit growth stages were used. Irrespective of the host they had developed on, the parasitoids showed similar olfactory preferences when given a dual choice between infested and healthy fruits, and they did not discriminate between fruits infested by C. molesta and C. pomonella. Responsiveness was generally high, especially late in the season close to harvest. Both hosts are parasitized regardless of the host the parasitoid female had developed on, and no differences in parasitism rates or number of offspring were noted for the two hosts offered. Results were consistent for all apple growth stages tested. In conclusion, mass rearing of this parasitoid can be carried out on either host, without limiting the future efficacy of the bio-control agent. Similarly, established colonies are expected to develop further on both hosts without any bias in host preference.

The species composition, distribution and diversity of macrophytes in Lake Ziway were determined at the end of dry and wet seasons along nine littoral sites during 2010 using a belt transect method. Some physicochemical parameters were also measured. Fourteen macrophyte species were identified with low species diversity for the lake (H' value of 1.805). The macrophyte species composition of the lake has undergone many changes during the last few decades. Arundo donax, which was never reported earlier, attained the highest relative density (30.7%) and frequency (30.5%) in this study, followed by Echinochloa colona, Potamogeton schweinfurthii, Cyperus articulatus, Typha latifolia and Cyperus papyrus. The average densities of A. donax, C. articulatus, E. colona and Pistia stratiotes were positively correlated with nutrients, whereas the density of the other species had negative correlation with physicochemical variables (CCA). Generally, the present macrophyte composition and abundance indicates healthy ecological condition of the lake. But if nutrient levels continue to increase and water levels continue to decline, we expect further changes in macrophyte composition and especially a shift towards invasive floating species.

The effects of temperature and larval density on survival of larvae, growth rate, age at pupation, and adult size (measured as wing length and dry weight) of laboratory-reared Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae) were studied. Larvae were reared at three temperatures (24, 27 and 30°C) and three densities (0.5, 1 and 2 larvae/cm2). The effects of density and temperature strongly interacted to determine the mosquitoes' life-history parameters. Survival was highest at the intermediate temperature of 27°C. The differences between the temperatures increased with increasing density. At 30°C survival decreased as density increased, but at 27°C increasing density led to higher survival. Age at pupation increased as temperature decreased from 30°C to 24°C and as density decreased from 2 to 0.5 larvae/cm2. Adult size also increased as temperature decreased, but showed a negative correlation with density only at 27°C. In contrast, at 24°C and 30°C a decrease in density led to a decrease in adult size. Growth rate showed a similar pattern. At 27°C growth rate decreased as density increased, but at other temperatures the opposite trend was observed.

The development of Haliplanella lineata, following fertilization in the laboratory, was studied by light and electron microscopy. Spawned ova were spherical, magenta in color and about 120–150 µm in diameter. Cleavage was holoblastic and radial. Gastrulation occurred by immigration and invagination. Eighteen hours after fertilization, the embryo became a swimming planula larva with an apical organ and ciliary tuft at the aboral end. In the laboratory, planulae lived for about 2 weeks in the swimming state but in no case was there any settlement by larvae in this study. The structural study of planulae concentrated on the development of the aboral ectoderm, because of the functional significance of its cellular organization in larval settlement.

We studied the efficiency (proportion of the crop removed) and quantitative effectiveness (number of fruits removed) of dispersal of Miconia fosteri and M. serrulata (Melastomataceae) seeds by birds in lowland tropical wet forest of Ecuador. Specifically, we examined variation in fruit removal in order to reveal the spatial scale at which crop size influences seed dispersal outcome of individual plants, and to evaluate how the effect of crop size on plant dispersal success may be affected by conspecific fruit abundance and by the spatial distribution of frugivore abundance. We established two 9-ha plots in undisturbed terra-firme understory, where six manakin species (Pipridae) disperse most seeds of these two plant species. Mean levels of fruit removal were low for both species, with high variability among plants. In general, plants with larger crop sizes experienced greater efficiency and effectiveness of fruit removal than plants with smaller crops. Fruit removal, however, was also influenced by microhabitat, such as local topography and local neighborhood. Fruit-rich and disperser-rich patches overlapped spatially for M. fosteri but not M. serrulata, nonetheless fruit removal of M. serrulata was still much greater in fruit-rich patches. Fruit removal from individual plants did not decrease in patches with many fruiting conspecifics and, in fact, removal effectiveness was enhanced for M. fosteri with small crop sizes when such plants were in patches with more conspecifics. These results suggest that benefits of attracting dispersers to a patch balanced or outweighed the costs of competition for dispersers. Spatial pattern of fruit removal, a measure of plant fitness, depended on a complex interaction among plant traits, spatial patterns of plant distribution, and disperser behavior.

Lignite fossil flowers (including pollen) and isolated stamens of probable hamamelidalean (possible hamamelidaceous) affinities from the upper Cretaceous (Late Santonian or Early Campanian) of Sweden are described. The flowers are 6–7-merous with probably a double perianth, one whorl of stamens and (2-?)3 carpels. The stamens are disporangiate; each theca opens by a valve towards the centre of the flower. Pollen is tricolpate, tectate-columellate and reticulate; the endexine is lamellated in the apertural region. The gynoecium has free styles and a syncarpous ovary. In the one flower that was serially sectioned the ovary is either non-functional or development of the few (2?) ovules is retarded.

Intraguild predation (IGP) is common in most communities, but many aspects of density-dependent interactions of IG predators with IG prey are poorly resolved. Here, we examine how the density of an IG predator can affect feeding group size, IG egg predation, and the growth responses of IG prey. We used laboratory feeding trials and outdoor mesocosm experiments to study interactions between a social intraguild predator (larvae of the wood frog; Rana sylvatica) and its prey (spotted salamander; Ambystoma maculatum). Larvae of R. sylvatica could potentially affect A. maculatum by consuming shared larval food resources or by consuming eggs and hatchlings. However, successful egg predation requires group feeding by schooling tadpoles. We established from five to 1,190 hatchlings of R. sylvatica in mesocosms, then added either 20 A. maculatum hatchlings to study interspecific competition, or a single egg mass to examine IGP. Crowding strongly suppressed the growth of R. sylvatica, and IGP was restricted to the egg stage. In the larval competition experiment, growth of A. maculatum was inversely proportional to R. sylvatica density. In the predation experiment, embryonic mortality of A. maculatum was directly proportional to the initial density of R. sylvatica and the mean number of tadpoles foraging on egg masses. IGP on eggs reduced A. maculatum hatchling density, which accelerated larval growth. Surprisingly, the density of R. sylvatica had no overall effect on A. maculatum growth because release from intraspecific competition via egg predation was balanced by increased interspecific competition. Our results demonstrate that the density of a social IG predator can strongly influence the nature and intensity of interactions with a second guild member by simultaneously altering the intensity of IGP and intra- and interspecific competition.L . Dacus tryoni (Frogg.) (Diptera: Tephritidae) is the main tephritid pest of cultivated fruits in Australia. D. jarvisi (Tryon) is also able to infest these fruits. Some factors influencing the rate at which D. tryoni and D. jarvisi exploit patches of host fruits were examined to determine whether one species may have an advantage when they exploit the same fruits in the field. Measurements of the intrinsic rate of increase, ovariole number, clutch size and egg size and the influence of body size on these parameters were made for both species in the laboratory. Up to 10 weeks of age D. tryoni produced twice as many eggs as D. jarvisi, most during a peak 3–5 weeks after adult emergence. The difference in fecundity up to 10 weeks can be explained partly by the higher number of ovarioles in D. tryoni (38/ovary) compared to D. jarvisi (27/ovary). In addition D. tryoni produces smaller eggs than D. jarvisi and distributes them in smaller clutches; 3–4 eggs/clutch vs 10–15. In both species there was a positive correlation between ovariole number and body size (as measured by wing length). By contrast, egg size remained constant over a broad range of body sizes. The influence of these life history differences on the interaction between D. tryoni and D. jarvisi in the field is discussed.

In order to clarify the nutritional conditions of larval milkfish in the surf zone, the following parameters were examined: 1) DNA and RNA content and RNA/DNA ratio of fed and unfed larvae collected from the surf zone and reared in the laboratory; 2) survival rate of the unfed larvae; and 3) total length, otolith increment counts and RNA/DNA ratio of wild larvae collected daily from the surf zone. The DNA and RNA content of the unfed larvae decreased, but increased in fed larvae. The RNA/DNA ratio decreased in unfed larvae, whereas in the fed larvae it decreased for the first three days after capture and increased thereafter. These results indicated that the values of DNA and RNA content and RNA/DNA ratio could be used as an indicator of nutritional condition of milkfish larvae after 6 days of starvation. Although total length of the wild-larvae did not show serial changes, their otolith increment counts showed continuous increases, indicating that the larvae sojourned in the surf zone for several days. In the same period, RNA/DNA ratios of the wild larvae decreased continuously, the ratios of larvae with fewer otolith increment counts being relatively higher than those of larvae with greater increment counts. Based on these results, the milkfish larvae remaining in the surf zone were concluded as being under insufficient nutritional conditions.

A small irrigation diversion dam near Chiloquin, Oregon, was removed and replaced with a pump station to improve fish passage for Lost River suckers (Deltistes luxatus) and shortnose suckers (Chasmistes brevirostris) entering the Sprague River on their spawning migrations. During the developmental phase of the pump station, a need was identified to better understand the larval drift characteristics of these endangered catostomids in order to reduce entrainment into the irrigation system. The spatial, seasonal, and diel distribution of drifting larvae was measured during the 2004 spawning season at two proposed sites on the Williamson River where the pump station could be located. Larval drift for both species coincided with the irrigation season making them subject to entrainment into the irrigation system. Drift occurred almost exclusively at night with larvae entering the drift at sunset and exiting the drift at sunrise. Nighttime larval densities were concentrated near the surface and at midchannel at both sites. Densities were generally greater on the side of mid-channel with greater flow. During early morning sampling we detected a general shift in larval drift from surface to subsurface drift. We also observed an increase in larval densities towards the shore opposite from the proposed pump station at the upper site whereas larval densities remained high at midchannel at the lower site. During daytime sampling, the few larvae that were collected were distributed throughout the water column at both pump sites. This study found that larvae drifting during all time periods were generally distributed further across the cross section, deeper in the water column, and closer to where the proposed water withdrawal structure would be built at the downstream site when compared to the upstream site. Recommendations were provided to locate the withdrawal facility at the upstream site and operate it in a manner such that larval entrainment would likely be minimized.

Summary The midgut pH of late instar gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.) larvae is strongly alkaline, and varies with diet, larval stadium, and time since feeding. Midgut pH rises with time since feeding, and does so more quickly, reaching greater maximum values, on some diets than others. Leaf tissues of 23 tree species resist increases in alkalinity differentially; this trait and differing initial leaf pH may explain the impact of diet on gut pH. Third instar larvae may have gut conditions favorable for tannin-protein binding shortly after ingesting certain foods, but with time midgut alkalinity becomes great enough to dissociate tannin-protein complexes. Older instars rarely exhibit gut pHs low enough to permit tannin activity. Alkaline gut conditions may explain the gypsy moth's ability to feed on many tanniniferous plant species, especially in later instars. Consequences for pathogen effectiveness are discussed.

The ability of the gregarious larval endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata L. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to adjust progeny sex ratio and clutch size was investigated. The sex ratios (proportion of males) of field clusters were diverse, but many (70%) were female-biased. Nearly 10% yielded males only, suggesting a low percentage of unmated females in the field. In over half of the clusters containing females, the sex ratio was below 0.3. Superparasitism was common in the field, and females were believed to increase progeny sex ratio when attacking previously-parasitized hosts. However, in a single oviposition bout, sex allocation was not precisely controlled both in the field and laboratory. In the laboratory, the number of eggs laid in a day tended to decrease with increasing female age. For females which were offered two hosts per day and for those offered three hosts per day, this value became nearly the same several days after the start of oviposition. The total number of hosts which a female could parasitize during her lifetime was often less than 40. Some of the old females which attacked more than 40 hosts produced male-biased clutches; this was due to sperm depletion, because sperm remained viable throughout a female's lifetime. The amount of sperm used in a single oviposition bout seemed fixed and was not dependent on the number of eggs laid. Females with much oviposition experience did not produce new eggs to compensate for deposited eggs, and the efficiency of egg use (deposited eggs/total eggs) was more than 80%.
